This course is an excellent stepping stone for those wanting to enter the Access to Higher Education route into university.

This level 2 course is a great starting point for those wanting to enter the Access to Higher Education Science route into university.

What will I learn? Modules include English, Maths and Personal Career Preparation, helping you develop the skills needed to progress into further study.

What will I learn? You will develop scientific knowledge and skills as well as improving your Maths and English to the level 2 requirement. The units covered include: The Investigating Process, Principles and Practical Skills, Punctuation and Grammar Skills and Using Calculations.

How will I be assessed? There are various methods of assessment such as presentations, essays, individual study and homework. You’ll also produce a portfolio of evidence to show your newly developed skills.

ACCESS TO HE Our Access to HE courses can offer a great route into Higher Education for those without traditional qualifications for study at university, or those returning to education. You’ll develop the study skills you need to prepare you for the demands of your chosen subject.

ONE AWARDS ACCESS TO HE DIPLOMA: COUNSELLING Part-time, one year

With an excellent bespoke design, this innovative programme offers students the opportunity to combine modules from across the aviation and travel and tourism sectors. It also offers the chance to top-up to a relevant BA (Hons) degree with a further year of fulltime study. What will I learn? If you are looking for a work-related qualification in Business and Management to study alongside your job, this is the course for you. The emphasis is on developing skills relevant to the real world of work, and making practical links between theory and the demands of business management.

This programme is designed to meet the needs of existing or aspiring supervisors and first line managers, and is intended for those people who need to maintain and develop the effectiveness and efficiency of the operations for which they are responsible. What will I learn? This course will help develop personal management capabilities as a starting point and then go on to focus on people and operational management principles and practices, and the development of a basic appreciation of resource control and use. Computer network specialists are vital to the provision, operation and management of networked computer systems. This course will focus on computer networking and four of the networking-based modules which can lead towards additional accreditation with CISCO, the national standard in networking.

You need: A relevant level 3 qualification or work experience.

COUNSELLING FdA COUNSELLING Foundation degree in Arts Part-time, two years

This programme will offer you the chance to build your personal and professional development in counselling, incorporating work-based practice. What will I learn? You need: • QCF Level 3 achievement or equivalent in Counselling. • Due to the nature of the programme you will need to provide written references from two sources to demonstrate your appropriateness to undertake professional counselling training and your ability to cope with the academic requirements. • You will be asked to declare any criminal convictions and be aware that DBS checks will be carried out prior to you undertaking clinical practice. • Additionally, you will need to undertake 10 hours of personal therapy each year. • Suitable candidates will be selected and invited for interview. What’s next? You could progress to a relevant study programme at university such as therapeutic counselling or psychology and counselling.

CATHRINE FdA EARLY YEARS When Cathrine decided to return to education after retiring from a 32-year career in health, she never dreamed it would be the start of a whole new career. But finding that she enjoyed her studies, the Stockton mum not only went on to pick up qualifications in Supporting Teaching and Learning and the Children and Young People’s Workforce, she progressed to the Early Years Foundation degree. Now working in learning and support, Catherine said her advice to anyone thinking of returning to education would be:

DEGREE AND DEGREE TOP-UP PROGRAMMES On completion of our Foundation degrees, you can progress on to the final year or ‘top-up award’ (the equivalent of a degree programme) through Teesside University. We offer some degree programmes here at Stockton Riverside College.

PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMMES At Stockton Riverside College you can also study for HE qualifications awarded by professional bodies. Our programmes are excellent preparation for careers in accounting, business, financial services and human resource management. As well as being taught by our experienced and knowledgeable tutors, you can maximise your potential on such courses by becoming a member of the relevant body.

FOUNDATION DEGREES Foundation degrees are one of the most flexible professional qualifications available. They allow you to develop specialist skills and knowledge in real workplace settings and our part-time programmes can provide a way of improving qualifications and career prospects while you work. Foundation degrees are strongly employment-based and normally take two or three years of study. They are designed for students from a wide range of backgrounds, including those with previous experience rather than conventional entry requirements.

COURSE FEES DO I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY COURSE UP FRONT? All courses have an attached fee which can be found on our website www.stockton.ac.uk (when available and subject to change) or for more information call our Information Centre on 01642 865566. You have a number of options for payment which can include paying for the course yourself or applying for a loan. If you are paying for your course the college can arrange for upfront payment in full or set up a payment plan. What are the loan options? Students studying on Teesside University awards may be eligible to apply for a Student Loan from Student Finance England (SFE) to cover the full cost of fees. Students on full-time programmes may be eligible for a maintenance support loan. ADVANCED LEARNER LOANS If you’re planning to study a Level 3-6 Further Education course or Access to HE course you may qualify for an Advanced Learner Loan. Students will be able to apply for a loan to meet the upfront costs of their qualification, which will be paid directly to the college on their behalf. This is a great way to access courses that previously, for financial reasons, may have been out of your reach. Things you need to know about: • You need to be a UK resident and aged over 19 • Advanced Learner Loans are not means tested or credit checked • Funds are paid directly to the learning provider • Minimum amount £300 (maximum depends upon course chosen) •Y ou must enrol on an eligible course • Bursaries may be available for extra support for childcare* • Applications can be made from April, online with Student Loans Company for courses starting in September •R epayments only start when earning £21k or more. Example: when earning £22,000 repayment will be £7 per month. This loan application is a credit agreement between you and the Student Loans Company *subject to change If the loan is for an Access to Higher Education programme and you subsequently go on to complete a higher education course you won’t have to pay back your Advanced Learner Loan. YOUR SAFETY We have an experienced safeguarding team with a full-time Safeguarding Officer to protect our students and ensure personal safety and safety awareness are a priority. The college also works closely with Cleveland Fire Brigade and Cleveland Police who provide onsite events focusing on issues including road-safety, fire safety and drugs and alcohol education.

STANDARDS OF EDUCATION Our Higher Education provision was reviewed in January 2012 by the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education (QAA) and we gained the highest possible rating within their review system. They told us that they had confidence in the management of Academic Standards on behalf of our Awarding Bodies and confidence in the quality of the learning opportunities we offer. They also agreed that the information we provide is accurate and complete.

ABOUT US STOCKTON RIVERSIDE COLLEGE

Stockton Riverside College delivers exceptional teaching at its sites across Teesside. Our Higher Education is delivered from the Teesdale campus where we offer a variety of access courses, foundation degrees, top-up degrees and professional courses.

Our typical class size is between 12−20 students, well below that of most universities, this means that you’ll benefit from a more personal and supportive learning environment. The college has dedicated HE study facilities which are exclusive to HE students; the HE Centre and the HE Study and Resource Room, both provide learning and social space that can be used for independent work and networking with fellow students.


VLE

All of our students benefit from a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that can be accessed remotely. This provides a very useful way of receiving communication from your tutor and accessing programme materials, especially if work or personal commitments occasionally get in the way of your studies.

LEARNING RESOURCE CENTRE

Our Learning Resource Centre (LRC) is available for individual and group study and has lots of print, digital and electronic resources. There are plenty of PCs and Macs available and our ICLT team are on hand to offer IT support.

WHERE WE ARE BY CAR From the North/South From the A19 leave at the junction signposted Stockton/Darlington and A66. Exit the A66 at the Teesside Park/Teesdale junction. At the junction at the top of the slip road turn right at the traffic lights. Turn left at the roundabout, then go straight ahead at the next roundabout on to Princeton Drive. At the next roundabout turn right on to Harvard Avenue. You will find the College entrance on your right.
