Alternative Curriculum Course Guide
Hello & Welcome Stockton Riverside College offers a wide range of academic and vocational programmes for 14-16 year olds at multiple venues across the local area. All of our courses are delivered by highly qualified teachers and industry professionals in state-of-the art classrooms, workshops and training environments.
This prospectus has been designed in partnership with the local authority, schools and young people and aims to offer an exciting and diverse range of courses to meet the individual needs of all young people who join us. Our venues include: • Stockton Riverside College • The Skills Academy • SRC Bede Sixth Form • NETA Training In addition to meeting academic needs we pride ourselves in providing a nurturing and supportive environment for all learners, including support for anxious, vulnerable or disengaged learners and learners with specific learning needs. We also have a dedicated 14-16 Manager and Progression Coach who will work closely with all young people and parents/guardians from initial enquiry through to successful completion and achievement. Our main aim is to provide all young people with life and academic skills and knowledge to transition to post 16 education, employment or training.

POSITIVE PATHWAYS These programmes offer the main core subjects in the Key Stage 4 Curriculum: • Maths • English Language & Literature • Biology • IT In addition learners will gain qualifications and skills development through Employability, Enterprise, Sport, Enrichment and the Prince’s Trust Achieve Programme. Learners will take part in both theory and practical sessions including hair & beauty, construction, digital media, art & design and other vocational areas. Vocational tasters will rotate to allow learners to experience a wide range of subjects.
Assessment will be through a range of methods including exam assessments, practical activities and portfolio evidence. Initial assessment on entry will determine which pathway a learner will join with regular reviews taking place throughout the year. We recognise that for a variety of reasons not everyone needs to access a course at the start of the academic year or to access a full year programme. The flexibility of these programmes allow for entry at any point during the academic year with progression routes being: • • •
A positive and supported transition back into school Progression onto a vocational programme Completion of the full 25 hour programme

VOCATIONAL STUDY & BESPOKE PACKAGES
These programmes are available at all of our sites and we offer courses tailored to meet the needs of individual learners and school groups. Programmes can also be delivered in school settings where appropriate. Where learners infill into full time programmes, this will be alongside their 16-18 peers and all courses will include English and Maths*, tutorials, enterprise and enrichment. Bespoke packages which allow flexibility for learners, may include vocational study only or individual timetables on specific programmes. *English and Mathematics qualification will be informed by student’s entry point assessment.

ART & DESIGN The course gives an overview of a range of creative subjects including general Art and Design, Graphic Design, 3D Design, Photography, Multimedia, Video Editing and Enterprise.

ART & DESIGN LEVEL 2
The course is designed to allow students to understand the range of careers available in creative art and design and to be able to develop their skills both creatively and personally focusing on developing communication, independence and confidence. The students will take part in live design projects set by local companies and also a work placement so they can learn about working in the creative industries and developing skills required. COMPUTER SCIENCE We all use technology every day whether at school, work or at home. You can put that knowledge to good use by turning it into a future career. If you are interested in how computers work, want to learn how to write code or build a computer network that is secure from hackers, we have the course for you. Offering hands-on practical experience you’ll learn a range of skills including; how computer systems work, how to protect computers and data, how to program a computer, how to design and create your own spreadsheet and how to manage an IT project. Learning takes place in tutor-led practical and workrelated activities, workshops and demonstrations. Assessment is carried out through a combination of on-line tests, a portfolio of evidence and a programming project.

CONSTRUCTION
MULTI SKILLS - LEVEL1 In this Construction Skills Diploma, you’ll learn in the classroom and in the workshop, using suitable tools and materials. Each unit is assessed via practical module assignments. This course builds upon your prior knowledge and experience, enabling you to further develop your skills in the various trades. The phases cover the following trade areas: Phase 1: Generic Units, Bricklaying and Joinery Phase 2: Wall & Floor Tiling, Construction, Operations and Painting & Decorating Phase 3: Carpentry Phase 4: Plastering, Plumbing and Electrical As part of our Construction Skills course, students take part in enterprise. This means they make products such as wine racks, shelving units, personalised letters, personalised door hooks and driftwood decorations.

CONSTRUCTION
MULTI SKILLS - LEVEL 2 The Level 2 Technical Award in Constructing and Maintaining the Built Environment allow learners to gain theoretical knowledge and a number of technical skills related to the built environment sector. Learners could progress to a broad range of academic and/or vocational qualifications post-16. Students will explore the structure of the construction and the built environment industry and how all the various trades deliver on construction projects. Students will take part in both theory and practical sessions where they will complete assignments, synoptic practical tests and theory end tests for some units.

INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING Level 1 Choosing to study engineering is a great way to open up loads of future career opportunities. This course covers a wide range of service areas including: health & safety, basic power tools/hand tools, cutting and shaping, turning/milling, bench fitting, welding and employability including CV writing, applying for jobs and interview techniques. On this course you will spend time at both Stockton Riverside College and NETA. You will be assessed through practical work and multi-choice tests in a realistic industrial working environment.

ENGINEERING NETA TRAINING Level 2
Electrical, Fabrication and Welding, Pipefitting and Mechanical. Choosing to study engineering is a great way to open up loads of future career opportunities. Whether you want to work in industry, specialise in a particular area or eventually go on to run your own consultancy firm, our courses will give you an understanding of the specialist work related skills that are in demand by many employers. Our engineering courses cover a wide range of services and technical skills relevant to electrical, mechanical and manufacturing engineering. Learning in a hands-on environment you’ll get
the technical knowledge along with important lessons in Health and Safety, Communications, Science and Maths. HAIRDRESSING & BEAUTY THERAPY This course combines technical skills and underpinning knowledge to allow learners to experience and develop life skills whilst introducing them to the hair and beauty industries. Students develop knowledge and practical skills whilst learning in a fun, relaxed and friendly environment and building confidence through mentored and supported learning.

CHILDCARE & HEALTH A career in childcare and health can involve working with adults, children or young people. This course will develop knowledge and awareness of the types of provision in these sectors and the roles played by workers – from principles and values through to health and safety and working with others. There is also an option to take units in more specialised areas such as learning disability, sensory loss or mental health. On completing the qualifications, learners who wish to pursue a career in this field can progress to other Level 2 qualifications such as the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care, the Level 2 Certificate for the Children and Young People’s Workforce or the Level 2 Certificate in an Introduction to Early Years Education and Care.

IT Everyone needs IT skills whether you are at work, home or even on the move. This course is for those who have a grasp of the basics but want to build on that knowledge. You will learn how to design and build digital products, enabling you to use digital tools as a means to inform, persuade and entertain. It will develop your creativity and independent learning skills. Offering hands-on practical experience you’ll learn a range of skills including: how computer systems work, how to protect computers and data, how to design and create your own spreadsheet and how to manage an IT project. VEHICLE SYSTEMS MAINTENANCE The course gives an overview of Vehicle Systems Maintenance, how to comply with tyre law, tyre sizes and removal of wheels. You will also learn about vehicle body types i.e. saloon, hatchback, estate and the construction of these vehicles. Learn about problem solving and develop basic life skills for the future. This is a practical based qualification with assessments to pass. The students will be required to complete a portfolio of evidence, writing job cards and completing documents. Entry 3 Diploma allows students to progress to level 1.

ENGLISH AND MATHS
These are skills that we can all take for granted, but we all use English and Maths every day, often without even thinking about it.
For students under 19, it is a Government requirement that you keep working towards these essential GCSEs, if you haven’t already achieved grade 9-4/A*-C.

THE PRINCE’S TRUST Achieve Programme This programme aims to help you develop your employability skills, and will cover topics such as enterprise, customer service, money management, career planning, presentation skills and healthy and active lifestyle. The Prince’s Trust Achieve programme is an incredibly flexible model. It is delivered in the school setting or on our FE premises at Stockton, Redcar or the Skills Academy in Billingham. It is aimed at supporting young people to develop a range of personal and employability skills, combined with gaining nationally recognised qualifications. The focus of the Prince’s Trust is to enable young people to achieve their potential. We can work together to ensure your students achieve

things that they can be proud of. Students are empowered to take ownership of their work and to be accountable for their own successes. The course will help young people re-engage with learning, improving their chances of completing education. It is proven to increase confidence, self-esteem and social skills. It also improves attendance and motivation in school. The course can be delivered over half a day per week for one term or up to one day per week for the duration of the academic year. The Achieve Programme can be run for the same group of young people over two or three years, or over as little as six weeks - depending on what is right for you and your group.

Level 1 Sport This introductory course is perfect for those interested in the sport and active leisure industry. The course covers all the basics including how the body works, how to lead a healthy lifestyle, taking part in fitness sessions, taking part in different sports and work experience. This course is assessed through assignments and a range of practical assessments that are directly related to current industry practice. There are no exams for this course.

Former Skills Academy student Georgia is looking to the future after progressing from the Level 1 Creative Arts and Media to nearing completion of the Level 3 Diploma in Art & Design. Georgia credits The Skills Academy for getting her back into education. Having been out of school for several years due to anxiety, the 20-year-old was recommended by Youth Directions to take a look at what they have to offer. She said: “I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without The Skills Academy. They helped make the transition back into education so easy and stress free. How to Apply... School Students The school will make initial contact with the 14-16 Manager to discuss the learner’s needs and possible courses. A visit will then be organised for the school and learner to view the facilities, ask questions and complete initial paperwork. The learner will then be invited for a taster session within their chosen area and an interview will be carried out by the tutor. Once an offer has been made, the 14-16 Manager will draw up a Service Level Agreement for the school and parents to sign. The learner will attend the course once all information is received and signed. Electively Home Educated Learners Electively home educated students and their parents/ carers/Local Authority (EHE) may approach the 14-16 Manager directly through the contact details given. The same procedure is then followed as for school students for the initial visits, taster sessions and enrolments.
