STUDENT LIFE We want you to get the most from your time with us. That is why alongside your course we offer a wide range of activities and events to enrich your college experience. Here’s just a few of the great activities we have to offer…
RESPECT FESTIVAL Every year we put the focus on respect in our unique festival dedicated to sharing experiences, cultures and building a greater understanding of equality and diversity across the college. The event includes inspirational talks from guest visitors, trying new foods, and this year students even got the chance to have a go at the African drums. The Respect Festival is about looking outside of your everyday and getting to know those around you.
FIGURE IT OUT FESTIVAL
Here at Stockton Riverside College we know that English and maths matter. That’s why we created our annual Figure It Out Festival. By delivering workshops and fun activities, all with a focus on English and maths, we are able to raise awareness of the importance of these vital skills both for our students’ vocational choice and in everyday life.
TRIPS
Many of our courses offer the chance to take part in visits and trips. Whether visiting galleries, the theatre, building sites, universities or travelling overseas, we want to help you to develop your skills, not just by learning the theory but also by enjoying amazing first-hand experiences. This year our jet setting Aviation and Tourism students flew to fabulous New York.
CHARITY FUN
We love doing our bit for a good cause. Whether it is getting dressed up, baking (and eating) cakes, a sponsored abseil or leg wax, there are lots of opportunities for you to get involved. Got an idea? Talk to us about it, we could help you make it happen. This year one brave student shaved her head for charity.
STUDENT VOICE
As a student of Stockton Riverside College there are lots of opportunities for you to play an active part in college life. • S tudent ambassadors work with Student Services to promote and support the general interest and welfare of students. • The Student Association brings together students from across the college to attend regular meetings and act as a student voice. Students in both of these roles help to positively promote the college at events including open events, freshers’ fair and the Respect Festival as well as playing a part in fundraisers. • T he Student President is a student elected cross-college role leading the learner voice to help implement positive change in the college. Elected at the start of the academic year the Student President attends meetings and works closely with Student Services to promote student participation in activities and events.
ENRICHMENT
Alongside your course you will get the chance to take part in a variety of enrichment activities. The college has a variety of recreational activities including sport sessions and clubs which students can join throughout the year. Other activities include driving theory, sign language and many more which are and can be developed from your interest.

Tutorials

We have many professional services who support this tutorial programme including Cleveland Fire Brigade, the Samaritans and Media Cultured.
Work experience
When it comes to finding employment we know that real experience matters. That is why, during your time with us, we will help and support you when it comes to gaining real work experience. This can include placements, volunteering, working in college or community projects.
Enterprise
Whichever course you choose at Stockton Riverside College we offer you the chance to develop your entrepreneurial skills. Our aim is to help give you the life skills that we know employers are looking for. HEALTH & WELLBEING
The college has a team dedicated to your health and wellbeing. If you need information or advice on anything from financial worries to bullying, sexual health or drug and alcohol misuse, our youth workers are here to help. We also work closely with external agencies who regularly visit the college and can offer expert advice. These include: NHS Smoking Cessation Youth Direction National Citizen Service Eastern Ravens (carer support)
LEARNING SUPPORT
Our Learning Support Team are dedicated to ensuring that learners receive the appropriate support that they require for their individual needs. We can arrange a support interview and ensure the appropriate support is put in place. Learners have different support needs, but our ultimate goal is to ensure our learners are respected and cared for as individuals and are encouraged and supported to reach their full potential. The support may be for a specific learning difficulty, such as Dyslexia or Autism; or just help with Maths and English.

GRACE AND ALI Performing Arts Musical Theatre It’s been a busy time for our dancing duo Grace and Ali. But the Performing Arts Musical Theatre students have loved every minute. The pair not only celebrated success after making it to the live semi-finals of ITV1’s Britain’s Got Talent, but both have also secured places at leading stage schools. Grace is off to Laine Theatre Arts and Ali has a place at Performers College.

VICTORIA Health and Social Care Studying Health and Social Care has helped Victoria move a step closer to her dream job. The 18-year-old is off to university to study primary education. She says five work placements carried out in a range of different settings, helped her to find the right route for her.

SUCCESS JAKE
Professional Cookery Dedication and hard work has paid off for Professional Cookery student Jake. He not only secured a job at Stockton’s Mohujos while studying at the college but he has recently been promoted to chef de partie at the Mexican restaurant. Having worked his way through Levels 1, 2 and 3 at the college Jake said: “It is hard work and you have to be committed but I am loving it.” To succeed in the kitchen he said:
“Communication is key, that and team work.”
JADE Aviation Fitting full-time shifts around college hours might sound like hard work, but it is well worth the effort according to Aviation student Jade. The 19-year-old from Hartlepool has secured a job working as a passenger service agent with Swissport at Leeds Bradford Airport. She said:
“It is the knowledge that I have gained by doing the course that helped get me the job I wanted. It is hard work but I absolutely love it.” 23
SUCCESS matty Creative Film Production Studying Creative Film Production at Stockton Riverside College delivered far more than Matty expected. Developing extra skills as part of a student enterprise, Ufilms, he said: “When I came on this course I had never used a camera to film, now I want to be a cinematographer.” Matty is now going to the University of Salford to study Film Production.
“It has given us a lot of experience and helped us to work to the most professional standards.”
LEANNE Nail Services Studying Nail Services proved an inspiration to Leanne. She not only developed the practical skills of her art but with help from the college’s enterprise initiative she is working towards launching her own business. Hitting on the idea of using creepy crawlies in her designs, the budding entrepreneur has got her unique selling point nailed. The idea also saw Leanne take home one of the first Enterprising Stockton awards.

SUCCESS amar IT Choosing to study IT at Stockton Riverside College proved an inspiration to Amar. Not only did it trigger his passion for the subject but it set him up for educational success he never expected. Going on to study a Foundation Degree and then a top-up at Teesside University he graduated with a first class BSc Honours degree. He said: “I really can’t sing the praises of the teachers and staff of the college enough.”

beth Production Arts - Make-up With ambitions to one day work behind the scenes in film and TV, the Production Arts course at Stockton Riverside College proved the perfect choice for Beth. It not only taught her the practical skills of her trade but also gave her the chance to get loads of hands-on experience. She is now going on to study Fashion, Theatrical and Media Hair and Make-up at university in Leeds.

AVIATION Are you a good communicator with a close attention to detail and a determination to achieve? A career in the aviation industry could be for you. Whether your ambition is to work as cabin crew, air traffic control or even a pilot, our aviation courses will give you an all-round knowledge of the sector that will make you stand out from the competition.

With close industry links we know we are teaching the skills that employers are looking for. Recent trips have included the likes of Dubai and New York. CHOOSE YOUR COURSE: Aviation Diploma
Level 2 - one year What will I do? You will learn about all areas of working life in this dynamic industry including baggage processing, check in, dispatch, health and safety, aircraft marshalling and security. Lessons include a mixture of practical and theory sessions. You will get the chance to take part in educational trips and we also regularly welcome guest speakers and industry experts. You need: A minimum of four GCSEs grades D-E/3-2, including Maths and English, and a passion for the aviation industry. What’s next? You could move on to a relevant Level 3 course such as the Subsidiary Diploma in Aviation Level 3.
Aviation Subsidiary Diploma
Level 3 - one year What will I do? Trained as close to industry standards as possible, lessons include a mixture of theory and practical sessions in areas such as preparation for employment, handling air passengers, environmental impacts of aviation and customer service. You need: A minimum of four GCSEs grade 4/C or above, including Maths and English or a Level 2 Diploma in Aviation. What’s next? Progress to the Aviation Diploma Level 3.
Aviation Diploma
Level 3 - one year What will I do? You will learn about environmental impacts, marketing, human resources, ramp handling and aviation terminology. Additional training includes conflict management, first aid and teamwork training with the RAF. You need: Aviation Subsidiary Diploma Level 3. What’s next? You could continue your studies by moving on to a foundation degree such as the FdA in Aviation and Tourism, or start work in the industry.
Why English and Maths matter… Working in aviation you might need to write flight reports, calculate the weight of luggage, handle cash and work out currency conversions. 35

You will learn how to assist with nail treatments, facials and make-up. You will also learn health and safety, working with others and preparing the salon work area. You need: A keen interest in the beauty therapy industry and grade 2/E in Maths and English. What’s next? Achieve on this course and you can move on to Beauty Therapy Level 2.
Beauty Therapy Diploma
Level 2 – one year What will I do? You will learn manicure, pedicure, facials, lash and brow treatments, waxing and make-up. You will also learn about health and safety and how the body works. You need: Beauty Therapy Level 1 qualification or if you have GCSEs grade 3/D or above in English and Maths, or if you are aged 19+, you can start your studies at this level. What’s next? After successfully completing this course you could progress to Level 3 Beauty Therapy or Nail Services.

Level 3 – one year What will I do? You will learn more advanced techniques and treatments including body massage, stone therapy, facial and body electrical treatments and electrical epilation. One year This programme is aimed at those aged 16 to 18 who are not sure what vocational area is right for them or who need to develop their confidence and employability skills over a one year programme. If you are looking to start your career straight away, prefer to learn in the working environment and feel ready to step up to the demands of working life, then this could be the route for you. This is your opportunity to impress, so you will need to work hard, show dedication, determination and enthusiasm.
You may need to come into college one day a week if your apprenticeship is in a trade such as construction, hair or beauty. You will study functional skills in English and Maths, if you haven’t already achieved GCSE grade A*-C/9-4 in these subjects. In some cases you will study ICT as part of your apprenticeship framework.

FYI: Some apprenticeships are moving from frameworks to standards. This means that you may be assessed at the end of your apprenticeship. This assessment can include a professional discussion with an external assessor, an apprenticeship showcase (a bit like a portfolio), an observation in your workplace or a practical demonstration. Your assessor will let you know which applies to you.

BY CAR From the North/South From the A19 leave at the junction signposted Stockton/Darlington and A66. Exit the A66 at the Teesside Park/Teesdale junction. At the junction at the top of the slip road turn right at the traffic lights. Turn left at the roundabout, then go straight ahead at the next roundabout on to Princeton Drive. At the next roundabout turn right on to Harvard Avenue. You will find the college entrance on your right. From the East Join the A66 Middlesbrough bypass and continue on the A66 for three miles towards Darlington. Exit the A66 at the Teesside Park/Teesdale junction.
