GRANULAR URBANISM CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE This proposal restores a more granular pattern of urbanism that is historic to Chattanooga by offering a diversity of building masses, unit plans and public spaces. The advantages of the site allow Patten Parkway to be celebrated again as a historic urban space by terminating its eastern edge with a public plaza and landmark tower. Flynn street is re-imagined as a pedestrian-only esplanade that connects Downtown Chattanooga east to UTC and south to MLK drive and the Bessie Smith Cultural Center. The project satisfies five retail spaces, 117 units, and modern real estate amenities on a large development site while visually appearing to be a number of separate and vertically oriented urban buildings.

MIDTOWN CONNECTED ATLANTA, GEORGIA

The city of Atlanta has seen great strides in struggle and success. Its histories of culture and infrastructure tell a remarkable story of city-building. Urban neighborhoods and sprawling subdivisions make up a region ripe for re-imagination in 21st Century growth strategies. MIDTOWN CONNECTED proposes to bridge divides and catalyze a new urban district within a region of interconnected centers. The North Avenue MARTA rail-transit station is under served by surrounding surface parking lots and insufficient densities. Capping interstate 75/85 with a linear urban park will help catalyze new infill development at the western terminus of Ponce De Leon Avenue. This is a first step at re-connecting districts and corridors within a fast growing region of over six million people.

503 UNION ST.

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK 503 Union Street aims to mix community oriented programs into a complex arrangement of masses that provided a desired contextual scale while also satisfying the anticipated height and densities per the New York City Department of City Planning ‘s Gowanus Framework Plan.

The project combines a district library, retail and office space beneath a residential tower. The project’s challenges included a core-transfer floor and ground plane organization of program entrances around a waterfront plaza. 4th YEAR. INSTRUCTOR: MARK BLUMBERG

THE THOMAS BUILDING AUBURN, ALABAMA

The Thomas building is a mixed-use redevelopment project in downtown Auburn, Alabama. The building is comprised of a two story commercial office space for BBVA Compass Bank below a four story boutique hotel and rooftop lounge. The proposal aims to challenge existing zoning ordinances by exceeding the City of Auburn’s building height legislations and brick facaded requirements to create a landmark structure at Toomer’s Corner. 3RD YEAR. WORK EXPERIENCE DPZ CoDESIGN MIAMI, FLORIDA

A post-charrette redesign of “Oxford Farms”, an 18 acre mixed-use village in Oxford, Mississippi. This design challenge involved numerous master planning iterations to satisfy the client’s desired number of units as well as the required amount of on-site parking spaces while maintaining walkable street frontages and public spaces. The plan is anchored to the east by a small arrangement of commercial town center buildings and in the center by a community clubhouse and pool. The residential units are organized around a series of linear greens that access natural open space to the north. Careful consideration for building frontages and placements were made to ensure that the pedestrian experience was convenient and interesting. SUMMER 2019 INSTRUCTOR: XAVIER IGLESIAS

6.1 S U B U R B A N R E T R O F I T The intersection of N. Donahue Drive and Farmville Road in Auburn, AL is poised for commercial development. This plan (right) exemplifies more urban methods of building placements and parking configurations to promote more walkable and sustainable development patterns in the p e r i p h e r y o f t h e c i t y. The currently proposed development pattern (left) is a product of existing zoning ordinances that envision a more typical suburban designs in which parking lots are oversized and on the street frontages. The urban alternative uses similar building footprints, and arranges them to front the streets with large sidewalks and street trees. An adequate amount of parking is provided either on-street or in rear l o t s h i d d e n f r o m t h e v i e w.
