Lovely and Low-Maintenance Diamond Decks Introduces Revolutionary Decking Material to San Antonio
The Diamond Decks Crew (L-R) Scott Shook, Tex Pace, Steve Theis, Chris Koenig, Tom Boon, Abdul Al-Tabbah, Tyler Barton, Kyle Brooks, Kasey Unroe, Elyce Martinez and Donnie Ferguson By Amy Morgan
ife is all about choices. The balance between beauty and L convenience is a classic conundrum – especially when selecting materials for a home improvement project. A
wooden deck looks beautiful and classic, but its glory will fade in a few short years in the South Texas sunshine, turning its maintenance into another project on the honey-do list. Scraping, sanding, staining…. who really gets enthusiastic about all those chores? Yet most composite material lacks the warm, authentic look buyers desire. Now there’s no need to compromise. Diamond Decks, San Antonio’s largest deck company, has recently begun offering a new composite decking product: Zuri® Premium Decking, which outstrips any competitor on the market.
designers Steve Theis, and Abdul Al-Tabbah (Dulley), and marketing director Kasey Unroe work together as a team, managing their talented tradesmen and supervising jobsites daily. He credits their success to the team’s synergy, as each takes personal pride in their work, resulting in Diamond Deck’s stellar reputation. “We do 60-90 projects a month, with outstanding ratings on Angie’s List, Better Business Bureau and Home Advisor,” Ferguson said.
The planks look so much like authentic wood, “You could have a party with 100 people, and everyone would think it was real wood,” said Donnie Ferguson, who shares ownership of Diamond Decks with Kyle Brooks. Diamond Decks debuted Zuri® at their booth at the San Antonio Home and Garden show last month, to rave reviews. Their display showcased different color Zuri® plank deck areas, finished with picture-frame trim. Not only was the product extremely well received by consumers and industry insiders, Diamond Decks won an Exhibitor Excellence Award at the 2017 show. The company has grown 300 percent annually each of the past three years, Ferguson proclaimed. The company’s sales and production professionals including Ferguson, Brooks,

Diamond Decks featured Zuri® plank deck material at their booth at the San Antonio Home and Garden show last month, where their display won an Exhibitor Excellence Award.
The material is more costly than traditional wood or composite deck material, Ferguson admits, but Diamond Decks and umbrella company Rock Star Remodeling help clients manage their cash flow with their no-money-down policy. The company does not collect one dime of payment until the job is completed to the customer’s satisfaction, Ferguson emphasized. And Diamond Decks is able to provide several affordable financing options.
In three weeks, Diamond Decks has already scheduled 5,000 feet of construction using the Zuri® material. “I had people from deck companies touch the display, then go back and touch it again, and they still couldn’t tell it wasn’t wood,” Ferguson commented. “This is going to revolutionize the high-end deck-building project.
Zuri® Premium Decking is available in five beautiful, fade, stain and scratch-resistant colors: Chestnut, Walnut, Pecan, Brazilia and Weathered Gray.
Clients can visit Diamond Decks’ showroom inside the HEB at Stone Ridge Market, 281 and Evans Road, to view samples of Zuri® Premium Decking and plan their remodel or outdoor living project. In addition to decks, the company can design and oversee any project including outdoor kitchens, granite, stamped and stained concrete, tile, awnings, carpentry, electrical, iron doors - from start to finish. “Donnie Ferguson and Kyle Brooks have a tremendous passion to satisfy every customer,” he added. “Our business is all about relationships and communication.”
Diamond Decks, San Antonio’s largest deck company, offers a new composite decking product, Zuri® Premium Decking.
Zuri® planks are constructed of PVC material. They are moisture, stain and scratch resistant and backed by a 25-year warranty. Zuri® is available in five popular colors: Chestnut, Walnut, Pecan, Brazilia and Weathered Gray to match any décor. Their color fastness is guaranteed for 25 years. No staining or painting is required, which keeps maintenance to a minimum, and a hidden fastener system eliminates holes for screws or nails.

Because of its ability to resist moisture, Zuri® is suitable for use directly around water features. In fact, Ferguson has found its surface to become even less slippery when wet, he said. Company representatives trained his crews to install Zuri® planks and properly finish the edges.

Message from Councilman John Courage Let’s Try Something New You’re placed square on the front line of issues in your community, and my office is always ready to assist you when problems arise. When it comes to improvement projects my office can look at maps and models, we can even drive the district, but nobody knows your neighborhood better than you. Sometimes those problems require a not-so-insignificant amount of capital in order appropriately address the needs of your community. I’m pleased to announce that my office is in the beginning stages of creating a District 9 participatory budgeting process, in which residents of our district will have a more direct impact on how $1.25 million of our office’s funds are utilized to improve our community.
This is an exciting time for our city and specifically District 9 as we hope to set a new standard for public involvement in our budgeting process. While I’m certainly familiarizing myself with the Stone Oak area, nobody knows your neighborhood better than you. Stay tuned! Yours in service,
John Courage Councilman, District 9
The projects suggested, and subsequently selected, must exist wholly within District 9. My office will be communicating specifics as the process evolves, and look forward to input from Stone Oak area residents on the issues affecting you.

SENIOR MOMENT
Compassionate Colonel From Flight Nurse to Child Advocate By Amy Morgan
C
olonel Mary Giniewski, R.N., B.S.N., M.A., traveled the world for 30 adventurous years as a U.S. Air Force nurse. She joined the branch in its infancy and in time was among the few women to achieve the rank of Colonel. She settled in San Antonio in 1983, and upon retirement in 1986, she turned her formidable energy and organizational skills to supporting the children of Boysville. Giniewski’s father, a former coal miner, moved the family to Reading, Pa., during the depression. Living through World War II as a young teen inspired her to earn her nursing degree. “Nurses did everything then,” she said, “dressed in white uniforms - stockings, shoes and caps.” She joined the Air Force as a first lieutenant in 1952. She was eager to pursue her dream of travel. Upon learning her first posting was in Washington, Giniewski was initially disappointed because she thought Moses Lake was in Washington D.C., so close to home. She was happy to realize Larson Air Force Base was located in Washington State, not D.C. The years travelling as a general duty nurse were happy times, she remembers. “You made your own fun,” she said, and the bachelor officers shared many social events. She was transferred to Alaska when it had just become a state. She remembers feeling it was the edge of a frontier. “The moose were very friendly, they ate the flowers and the grass outside our quarters. If you were working night shift and slept during the day, you might wake to see big brown eyes and antlers looking through the window at you,” she recounted. “We built an ice skating rink for ourselves in the woods. We would make a pool with water and wait for it to freeze - invariably the moose would tromp through it in the night, and we’d have to skate around the moose prints.” Giniewski was promoted to captain, and her career took off, literally. She completed flight nursing school at Brooks Air Force Base and then flew all over Europe, England and the Middle East from her station at Rhein-Main Air Base in Germany. She nursed families as well as servicemen, and narrowly escaped delivering a baby on a plane en route to Libya. When the Vietnam War broke out, she flew wounded patients returning from combat and was promoted to major. Later, she taught at the School of Health Care Sciences at Shepherd Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, where she assisted in the development of the Air Force L.V.N. program. She is proud of her work that opened the door for more nurses to build a career. With each accomplishment, her responsibilities increased. She was stationed in Hawaii as Pacific Air Force Command Nurse–responsible for nursing services for all the hospitals in the Pacific theater. Her last post was Command Nurse at Randolph Air Force Base’s Air Training Command. After 30 years she retired and decided to remain in the city that had become home. Giniewski wanted to pursue something different in the next chapter of her life. It all started when she dropped a donation at Boysville, and things escalated from there. Before she knew it, she found herself on the board of directors and president of the Boysville Auxiliary. Treasured times were those she spent one-on-one with the children. “They are starved for love and attention,” she said. “I’ve always loved children. And I hope I was able to make a few of their lives a little happier. I learned that the world is very different when you see it through the eyes of a child.”
Air Force nurse Colonel Mary Giniewski devoted herself to the children of Boysville after her retirement.

She moved into a beautiful home in Independence Village in 2003. After 14 years, she counts that as one of her best decisions. She feels secure, she said, grateful for her church, Holy Trinity, across the street from the front gate and her doctor’s office out the back gate. She values being able to have the help she needs, yet enjoys living independently in her lovely home with a beautiful garden. “I’ve had a very good life,” Giniewski said. “I have fulfilled most of my lifetime goals.”

Hope Giver Student Spotlight By Amy Morgan he best way to get everything out of your four years is to jump right in and get involved,” great advice from Reagan High School Student Council President Maitlin Harford. And she followed this counsel, immediately joining pep squad, dance team, and her first love, fashion club. Junior year, she connected with student council.

“Student Council is where I found my home at Reagan. I ran for office because I wanted to become a president who would lead people and also make a home for others.” Concern for others is one of Harford’s hallmarks. She joined Reagan’s Get Hope Club in memory of fellow student Kaylee Carew, who lost her battle with leukemia almost two years ago. This year Harford is the club’s historian. Her involvement with the organization has inspired her to change her direction – from fashion design to pediatric oncology. “I wanted to be a fashion designer since age four, but when I started going to events (at the hospital with the club), I realized God was calling me somewhere completely different,” she said. “In a place where people saw no hope, I saw hope. I found a passion that fulfills my life in a way clothes could never do.” Harford loves interacting with the pediatric cancer patients. Her favorite experience is when she is able to visit one-on-one with a patient whose immune system is too compromised to leave the hospital room. “My goal is to make them forget they have cancer for a day. We don’t want them to feel like they are different,” she said. “The are the strongest kids I’ve ever met. They’ve taught me so much about following your dreams and living fearlessly.” The club focuses on making pediatric cancer patients lives a little brighter. Their signature service is Deck My Room, where they completely decorate a hospital room with a patient’s favorites prior to an extended inpatient stay. “We spend about $500 decorating their bed, bringing things for them to do, toys, games, so the room doesn’t feel like a dreary hospital room,” she said. The club completed more than 10 rooms last year. Cathy Jones, Reagan counselor, describes Harford, “Maitlin is a mature, responsible student! Her enthusiasm for helping others and learning stands out. She is a natural leader, and her intelligence and contagious smile will take her far in life!” Coincidentally, Harford’s father is a pediatric oncologist. “It (her destiny) has been in front of me my whole life. And I haven’t been paying attention,” she said. While she never thought she’d follow in her father’s footsteps, or that of her two older sisters, Harford now finds herself dreaming of sharing his profession and her sister’s alma mater, the University of Kansas. KU pre-med is her top college choice. With a Summa Cum Laude-worthy GPA of 104, an activity plate full, and a heart of passion for others, she should certainly be an attractive candidate.
Maitlin Harford enjoys an Easter egg hunt with a new friend. She led Reagan’s Get Hope Club to organize the event to brighten the lives of children battling cancer.

Pet Owners Count Their Blessings
By Courtney Crowley hanksgiving is a time to count our blessings and remember things for which we are thankful. We make an effort to gather with friends, families and loved ones to share meals and memories. For pet owners, that spirit of gratitude extends to our furry family member as well as our human ones.
T
The following are some of the best suggestions:
Dogs have been called man’s best friend for a reason. Their care and companionship give us a sense of purpose, security, friendship, loyalty, and joy. There’s nothing like being greeted by your enthusiastically wiggling and waggling dog to put a smile on your face! They can’t help showing us we are their whole world.
The Garfield family “hides around the house in the morning so Skander can find us for some extra excitement.”
Camp Bow Wow held a contest this past month to honor the bond between dogs and their families. We invited owners to answer the question, “How do you #giveafetch” – describing ways they show appreciation and love to their furry family members. Responses were recorded on a paper tennis ball and placed in a gumball machine. Each week, one answer was selected and the winner awarded a free day of play at Camp Bow Wow.
Nikko, ready for his pump-it-up music before his walk. Mya hikes with her family.
Nikko gets “pumped for his walk” when his owners “play his favorite song, Rap God, by Eminem.”
Ollie’s family “holds his paw while we sit with him and watch the squirrels.” After trips to the vet, Lexy’s family “runs her through In and Out Burger for a snack with dad.” Lucy enjoys “attending dog-friendly festivals with her family.” And Mya “loves to hike with her family on free days.” This holiday season, take a minute to remember how thankful you are for your furry family member and show them your affection. (Just try to refrain from sneaking them too many table scraps – or In and Out burgers. Play is better than too much people food.)

Family Legacy By Amy Morgan
T
he Griffins joined the Club at Sonterra in 1987, just a few short years after Sonterra began offering a country club lifestyle and amenities to San Antonio’s far North Side in 1985. Kim and Paul Griffin have enjoyed their membership at the Club at Sonterra for the past 30 years, raising three children on its courses, courts and swimming pools. The Griffins’ life is an all-American story. The couple met at Western Michigan University, where Kim the cheerleader, applauded Paul’s efforts on the basketball court. The San Antonio Spurs recruited them in the 1970s, where Paul played forward with the Spurs “Bruise Brothers” under coaches Doug Moe and Stan Albeck. After his retirement from basketball, Paul joined Chicago Title Company, and the family settled in the Stone Oak area. Two years ago the Griffins moved to a neighborhood within the gates of the Sonterra property. They enjoy the convenience their new residence affords. “That’s what we like most about living here,” Paul said. “You can socialize and do a lot of things on your golf cart. We can come up to the club or visit our friends in six different neighborhoods without getting on the road.” Over the years, the Griffins have developed many friendships through the Club at Sonterra. Paul regularly golfs several times a week with a growing group of enthusiasts. Kim, a 3.5-ranked tennis player, plays often on several teams. Their children all graduated from Reagan High School. Sons Ryan and Cory live in Stone Oak, while daughter, Kacy Soole remained in Colorado after attending college there. Just last year, their older son, Ryan, and his family continued the tradition of membership at the Club at Sonterra. Ryan had grown up at the club, and his wife, Megan, remembered her happy childhood summers swimming at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth. They often joined Ryan’s parents at the club for golf or brunch, but as their family grew to include 3-year-old daughter, Elise, they decided the time was right to take advantage of the discounted membership rates the club offers to those under 35 who are establishing families and careers. “It is a fun way to meet new people,” Megan said. Ryan is in the financial services industry and also finds the club at Sonterra a good networking environment for young professionals. Ryan and Megan were attracted by the social activities designed to appeal to the younger generation beyond just traditional golf and tennis. They enjoy the 9 and Dine, a husband and wife scramble; wine tasting events; and Karaoke Night. The ease of dropping Elise in the Kids Club allows the 30-somethings to socialize with friends, knowing she is well cared for, having fun with her own friends, and nearby. They have since recruited four other couples to become members. Although Megan works full-time in pharmaceutical sales, she participates in the club’s moms’ group. Elise donned her blue princess dress recently for the fall party the group hosted in conjunction with the October Family Fortune dinner. Members are encouraged to bring the kids to the Wednesday dinner buffet, where diners may be rewarded with prizes like a bottle of champagne or the free brunch Ryan won. As they balance work and family responsibilities, Megan and Ryan find the club a convenient way to socialize and network. Kim and Paul often join their children. They recently gathered at the Taste of Sonterra, an event featuring food and drink booths and a live rock cover band, The Court Jesters. “They did a great job,” Kim said. “We knew all the songs. Megan and Ryan came up, and we each had a group of friends to enjoy the evening with.” The Griffins praise the ways the Club at Sonterra has prioritized keeping current with the changing times, updating menus and décor, as well as adding activities that connect all generations. “The events keep all levels of the membership active. Members don’t just pay their dues and not come,” Megan added. There is something for everyone at the Club at Sonterra. The all American story and club traditions continue with Grandparents, Kim and Paul just a golf cart ride away.

Kim and Paul Griffin enjoy spending time with their elder son, Ryan, his wife, Megan, and granddaughter, Elise, at the Club at Sonterra.
Nearly 800 runners and walkers participated in this year’s Paint the Parkway Pink 5KRun /1Mile Walk on Saturday, October 21st at North Central Baptist Hospital. 100% of the proceeds go to Susan G. Komen medical research to FIND A CURE.
