The Ultimate Luxury Experience BMW/MINI Dealership Moves to Far North Side
General Manager Nick Vanderpool sits behind the wheel of the 2019 BMW Z4 convertible in San Francisco Red Metallic. By Amy Morgan
your eyes and picture the car you wish you were driving. C lose The one you saw on the highway or the big screen. We
Americans have long been spellbound by the lure of luxury automobiles. Our cars express our personalities, our values, and even our financial status.
No matter how sexy a car may look on the outside, its primary purpose still is to provide reliable transportation. And everyone wants to be treated well and feel confident they paid a fair price as part of their purchase experience. That’s where Principle Auto Group comes in. The Guenther family founded the Principle BMW dealership 45 years ago at its original location on Airport Boulevard. Principle BMW outgrew that campus and relocated in December to their beautiful, state-of-the-art facility at 15507 W. IH 10 (on the Southeast corner of 1604 and IH 10).
The design and construction process for the new location took two years, according to Nick Vanderpool, general manager and president of operations for Principle BMW and MINI Cooper. The dealership includes 117 service bays in 255,000 climate-controlled square feet — making it the largest in North America, he said. Forty additional bays are scheduled to open by year’s end. Solar panels on the roof produce enough energy to power its electricity. When Vanderpool took over store management five years ago, he instilled the Principle Business Model. Since then, the store has increased sales to 450 vehicles per month on average.
Expanded space allows clients to make service appointments at their convenience — even same day if it is a safety or drivability issue, Vanderpool said. The dealership developed and installed a state-of-the-art radio frequency identifier (RFID) system that recognizes owners by name when they arrive. It also tracks a vehicle’s location on the property at all times. When the car pulls in the service drive, equipment will register the tread depth and wear of each tire to determine whether they need to be realigned. Principle BMW and MINI keeps a fleet of 260 loaner cars for client use during maintenance. Each is driven for a few months then sold at a discounted price when they accrue 4,000-5,000 miles. However, luxurious amenities including free WiFi and a custom coffee bar complete with barista entice many to remain on property during an appointment. Vanderpool also added a complimentary shoeshine station and nail salon. Each BMW or MINI Cooper is treated to a wash before being returned. Owners are invited to stop by any time to run their car through the 90-foot, top quality wash — even without a maintenance appointment.
4
“We all want to be treated great,” he said. “We make decisions based on the customer experience. We’ve sold families their whole fleet of cars. They have had a good experience, and they keep coming back.” Principle BMW and MINI employs 243 associates, which includes 34 client advisors (40 percent of whom are women) and 71 service technicians. In addition to being a valuable employer, the dealership proudly supports the local community. They sponsor the prize for the selected nurse of the year for University Health Systems and the AHISD teacher of the year. They also provided kid-sized motorized MINIs and BMWs to University and Methodist Children’s Hospitals, Vanderpool added. BMWs and MINI Coopers are available in a wide range of price points, from the starter MINI at $23,000, to standard X1 and 3 series BMWs, or a luxury B7 Alpina priced in the triple digits. Principle is the only BMW dealer in the United States to offer an individual room, a space dedicated to those who want to custom design their BMW to any specification — from color to amenities.
Their corporate culture emphasizes a philosophy of excellence and integrity that associates have adopted. The dealership earned the coveted Center of Excellence Award four out of the last five years. This ranks them in the top 10 percent of all BMW dealerships in the United States in sales and service. They are on track for another win in 2019.
“If you want a dash made out of wood from your great-grandmother’s oak tree or a headrest made from your NBA-championship basketball, they can do it,” Vanderpool said. “People just love their cars!” Since Principle BMW has had room to spread its wings in the new location, customer satisfaction has gone through the roof. They are up 15% in their internal survey. Seventy percent of clients come back for a second lease or purchase, compared to a national average of 45 percent, Vanderpool reported.

SENIOR MOMENT
A Life Well Lived By Amy Morgan
S
pend some time in the presence of Pam Craven and the words of Proverbs 31 will come to mind… “A good woman is hard to find …She is skilled in the crafts of home and hearth … She is quick to assist anyone in need… and she always faces tomorrow with a smile…. The women to be admired and praised is the woman who lives in the Fear-of God.” Pam embodies the spirit of these words. She’s devoted her life to serving others, raising two children while her husband ran a busy orthopedic surgery practice. His untimely death left Pam a widow early in her 70s. Determined to stay healthy, she has practiced Pilates almost daily for 12 years and enjoyed horseback riding for most of her life. Pam’s home in Hill Country Village included a stable for the horses she rode with her daughter, Shannon, and son, David. “The kids did 4H and quarter horse show and dressage,” Pam said. “Those were the fun days. I lived my dreams through my daughter. She has all the fancy ribbons and trophies, and I cleaned the stall.” Pam grew up in Wichita Falls, where she and her sister, Tana, learned how to ride as children. They would spend a week every summer at Lost Valley Ranch in Colorado, where they rode for hours. This was a tradition Pam continued with her family.
Pam Craven devoted her life to serving others, raising two children while her husband ran a busy orthopedic surgery practice.
David and his family now live in Denver, where he has traded his saddle for a snowboard, Pam said. But her daughter lives in Stone Oak, conveniently close to Pam’s latest residence her beautifully decorated home in Independence Village. Pam and her pup, Spencer, moved to Independence Village this year to rid herself of the upkeep of the ranch and shorten the commute to her grandsons’ sporting activities. Now it’s just “one minute and 10 seconds,” out the back gate of Independence Village to the Reagan High School gym or baseball field to watch 15-year-old Chase play. And her journey to baseball games at San Antonio Christian School for junior Dylan are not much further.

Open House
Pam still keeps close ties to her friends and family in Boerne. She visits her sister every week at the ranch where Tana tends a herd of miniature horses. Pam is a graduate of Bible Study Fellowship and mentors a group of young mothers through her church, Oak Hills. For several years, Pam worked as a nanny for a family of pilots. “I’d stay at the house with the kids when both were flying,” she said. “It is a blessing how God uses you wherever you are.”

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH
Happy Anniversary 7to7 Dental and Orthodontics Marks First Year in Stone Oak Patient convenience, comfort and time are 7to7 Dental’s highest priority. Not only does the professional, caring team of dentists, orthodontists and hygienists provide the highest standard of dental care, the practice offers state-of-the-art technology and a comfortable, affordable and pain-free dental experience. A hallmark of 7to7 Dental is accessibility– offices are open seven days a week, 7 a.m. – 8 p.m., Monday – Friday, and 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays. Highly trained professionals are always available for same-day appointments or to treat walk-in and emergency patients.
a difference a year makes! Just one year ago, 7to7 Dental W hat and Orthodontics relocated its North San Antonio office from the Encino Park area to its current home in Stone Oak. Although the office didn’t move far in miles, not having to cross U.S. Highway 281 has exponentially increased accessibility for patients in the Stone Oak area. And what could be a more convenient location than right next to the busiest Starbuck’s in town! To celebrate this milestone, the team at 7to7 Dental will offer prizes and giveaways all month. Each patient who comes in for a cleaning or treatment will be eligible to win a grand prize of a 65inch television. The former office, which opened in 2009, allowed 12 staff members to accommodate the dental needs of 4,000 patients. In just the past year, the team has more than doubled in size, employing 26 professionals who treated 5200 patients, according to practice marketing director Travis Dezuba. The 4000-square-foot office at 20122 Stone Oak Parkway offers a more convenient and larger space for their Stone Oak clients, said Tiffany Winburn, D.M.D. She, along with Justin Coke, founder and CEO, run the five 7to7 Dental offices citywide.
10
7to7 Dental is able to accommodate multiple family members simultaneously, offering parents’ teeth cleanings during their children’s orthodontia checks, for instance, making it a one-stop solution for family dental care. “We consider it an honor to position our company so we are there when our patients need us,” Dr. Winburn said. The Stone Oak office includes 12 patient rooms, each with TV screens on the wall and ceiling, and on-site X-Ray equipment. 7to7 Dental looks forward to continued growth and a long and successful future serving the residents of their Stone Oak community.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Future Physician Reagan Student Researches Potential Cancer Treatments
By Amy Morgan onald Reagan High School senior Selina Noe shares similarities with a number of Reagan’s multi-talented, extremely active, shining star students. She is a member of National Honor Society; founded and is president of a school club; presides over the Future Health Professionals (HOSA); shadowed physicians in the Clinical Rotation program; is a four-time varsity letterman in track – even progressing to regional competition; and her grades rank her in the top of her class.
R
But these accomplishments, no matter how illustrious, just scratch the surface of Selina’s abilities. The student spent the past three summers working with the Voelker Biomedical Research Academy, associated with the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio. This quite selective program pairs high school students with a mentor and allows them to participate in real medical lab work. Selina actively researched aspects of Glioblastoma – better known as the brain cancer that recently took the life of U.S. Senator John McCain. “We were examining how a specific protein in the brain acted in hypoxia - deficiency of oxygen,” she said, “looking for signaling pathways associated with that protein so we know which one to target to starve the tumors.” The scientists analyzed sample cells from actual patients. The results of her analysis will help find a drug that stops the tumor from proliferating, she added. Selina wrote an abstract from this research, which she presented at a symposium, and continues to attend lectures and events with Voelker Academy featuring visiting scientists. Not surprisingly, Selina hopes to pursue a career in medicine – pediatrics, cardiology, or neurology she hopes - another reason she chose to participate in Reagan’s Clinical Rotation program, where she shadowed physicians at North Central Baptist Hospital.
Reagan senior Selina Noe hopes to pursue a career in medicine – pediatrics, cardiology, or neurology.
The rotation program added hands-on clinical practice to her laboratory experience. Her perspective helps her lead the HOSA club, recruiting and encouraging peers toward careers in the medical field. Another characteristic that sets her apart is her bilingual French/English upbringing. Her father married her mother, a French national, when he was stationed overseas with the U.S. Army. Selina lived in Germany until she was seven years old, and the family still speaks French at home. Her sister, Aliya, is a freshman at Reagan. The two enjoy running track together. “She’s my sunshine,” Selina said. The family returns to Europe often to visit relatives. Cooking is Selina’s creative outlet, which is why she founded Reagan’s cooking club. They meet monthly to cook tasty meals together, and learn how to cook and bake through hands-on experience. Their first selection was a nod to Selina’s heritage – French Crepes.
