nterested in a little self-care this Valentine’s Day? Perhaps your New Year’s resolutions have not been as impactful as you had planned, and you are still hoping to make those big changes. Your weight may have plateaued, leaving stubborn lumps and bumps, or you want to look your best for an upcoming special event. Sometimes the trim, youthful look we’re trying to achieve just can’t be reached with diet and exercise alone. It’s not your fault. You’ve focused on your kids and family for so long, now is the time to think of yourself. Schedule a complimentary consultation with Dr. William Albright at Alamo Plastic Surgery, Stone Oak’s newest cosmetic and reconstructive surgery practice, located at 19016 Stone Oak Parkway. Dr. Albright and his wife, Juli, recently returned to his San Antonio hometown to be closer to their families and raise their young children in NEISD. He comes back to a family of surgeons. His father, Dr. Steven Albright, is an oral surgeon who has been practicing in San Antonio for over 30 years, and his older brother, Dr. Ben Albright, is a plastic surgeon located in the Woodlands.

Ana Martinez, R.N. and Heather Matix, M.A. offer a warm greeting to each patient at Alamo Plastic Surgery.
Patients come to Alamo Plastic Surgery for any number of reasons. One’s physical appearance may be negatively affecting their self-confidence and emotional wellbeing. Pregnancy may have changed one’s figure. Breasts and tummies may sag. Gravity wins. Fat lingers in undesirable places. Even the pubic area can be affected. Men, too, are not immune to physical changes caused by aging. While the “Mommy Makeover” (combining breast and body contour procedures) has grown in popularity, men are now asking for the “Daddy Do-over,” which involves restoring a youthful appearance to a man’s sagging middle and/or chest. “Cosmetic surgery can have a profound effect on people emotional and physically,” Dr. Albright said. “Some of my patients have said it is the best thing they’ve ever done for themselves.” Not only is he extensively trained in a variety of cosmetic methodologies, the Albrights have deliberately created an office atmosphere that is warm, welcoming and discreet. Their mission is to provide exceptional value through patient education, empowerment and incredible results. They will customize a plan to help every patient reach their goals. Dr. Albright consults and performs smaller procedures requiring only local anesthesia at the Stone Oak Office. One popular option, harvesting a patient’s own fat cells through liposuction and injecting them elsewhere to permanently augment breasts, cheeks or lip line. More extensive surgeries take place at a Christus medical facility that offers anesthesia and operative care. Dr. Albright does his best to combine procedures to lower patient costs if he determines the individual’s health can safely tolerate multiple simultaneous treatments.

Dr. Albright can perform many of his procedures in one of their office treatment rooms. “Dr. Albright performed a breast reduction and lift for me in June 2018. To say I am happy with the results would be an understatement. Dr. Albright and his staff answered all my questions, even the ones I thought were silly. Never felt like I was being rushed out of the office. Thank you, Dr. Albright.”

Alamo Plastic Surgery strives to make services affordable by offering financing that bundles the total price of a procedure into pre-determined monthly payments. The cost of a tummy tuck can be financed over several years at low interest, making the monthly payment similar to that of a cell phone bill, Juli added. Both Dr. Albright’s nurse, Ana Martinez, and his office manager, Franchesca Espinosa, speak Spanish fluently. After graduating from medical school at UTMB in Galveston with highest honors, Dr. Albright completed his residency at Penn State and was the lead surgeon at a plastic surgery clinic associated with the University of Iowa. He also spent a month in Brazil training with surgeons skilled in creating more curvaceous body profiles including the popular Brazilian Butt Lift. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Dr. Albright currently is accepting new patients and can schedule most consultations within a week. With warmer weather just around the corner, do you feel confident shedding your layers? Don’t delay. “All of my life I have been small chested, and when I became a mommy, it only went downhill from there. I didn’t know that the smallest “A” could sag and really deflate my confidence. I began working out, and became a Beach Body Coach. I strive to help others feel as confident as possible with exercise and eating right on a daily basis. This became very hard for me to continue to do, when I myself was lacking confidence in one area. The more chest and arm exercises I did, the more my breasts began to look like ‘pecks’.
“I came to Dr. Albright for a simple consultation, and left feeling more motivated than ever. His staff was so professional, and despite my want for ‘cosmetic’ surgery, they were very welcoming!! I was in and out at my consult, and also at my second appointment. We scheduled surgery for two weeks later. Everything went great, and I saw Dr. Albright the next day for my follow up. All of the decisions that we made about my breast augmentation were spot on. My recovery time was four to six weeks, and I didn’t have much pain at all. At four weeks, I was cleared to begin working out again, very slowly. This was a quick recovery, and life got back to normal. I would have this surgery all over again, and have already recommended Dr. Albright and his staff to everyone I know!! This was the most convenient and wonderful experience I could have had with a surgery!!!”

Local Shelters Prepare Pups for Forever Families
they are ready to join a family. SNIPSA volunteers keep potential adoptees in their own homes. The dogs socialize with their hosts’ children and other pets, and dog foster parents can report first-hand about their guests’ characteristics and habits. SNIPSA also holds “Big Fix” events several times a year, where they drive a mobile vet clinic to areas with overpopulation problems to offer free spay, neutering and vaccinations. The Animal Defense League was founded in 1934 when the need to help homeless animals was recognized. A full veterinary staff cares for animals prior to their adoption. The ADL also offers education programs and opportunities for volunteer service hours.

he continual problem of how to handle San Antonio’s large population of homeless T dogs and cats is a sad reality. Although the city has made efforts, animals are still being put down due to lack of homes. This month, we highlight heroes at local shelters and rescues who are working hard to find our furry friends' forever families. Whether you are interested in adopting, volunteering, or donating, these trusted organizations are worthy of your help. Veterinarians founded SNIPSA to rescue dogs from high kill shelters. Many of these pups need medical care or to wean puppies before
Animal Care Services is the name of the official City of San Antonio pet shelter. In addition to housing animals suitable for rehoming, the organization offers low cost services, owner surrender and animal law enforcement. Homes for Pets is a small local shelter that accepts animals from the community as well as overflow from other area rescue organization. As with SNIPSA, dogs waiting for new homes live with foster families until adoption. This allows Homes for Pets to personally select the forever family that will be the best fit for each dog. God’s Dogs maintains a facility on five acres in Von Ormy, as well as connecting foster families across the state. God’s Dogs specializes in rescuing dogs from kill shelters, especially those on “death row.” They seek local homes for some of their pups, but God’s Dogs also will ship across the country to help alleviate San Antonio’s overpopulation. This list highlights a handful of spaces filled with big-hearted volunteers. Find them online or through their Facebook pages to share your love.

Day of Free Dental Care 7to7 Dental Gives Back to Community People begin lining up by 7 a.m. at the practice’s location on Braun Road to ensure their slot for treatment. Each patient in line by 11 a.m. will receive a cleaning and either an extraction or filling, depending on what is necessary. At the end of the day, 7to7 Dental professionals will have seen close to 200 patients and performed approximately 700 dental procedures in the 23-continuously filled chairs. “Dental Hope is pretty much an all-hands-on-deck event,” said practice Co-Owner Tiffany Winburn, D.M.D. “Our dentists and hygienists see as many patients as they can, non-clinical staff help process the paperwork, direct traffic and change rooms, friends and family stop by. All told – we’ll have close to 190 people volunteering that day.” By Amy Morgan

ebruary is Valentine’s Month, which heralds ways to show affection to loved ones. As much as we all enjoy the flowers and romance – sometimes the best way to share love is to meet an urgent need. The doctors and staff of 7to7 Dental & Orthodontics believe in putting their money where their mouth is - literally and figuratively. They show their love and care by offering purposeful service to their community. 7to7 Dental has dedicated an entire day - called Dental Hope - to provide free dental care to adults who would not otherwise be able to afford it. This February 15 marks the seventh year those in the practice – more than 20 doctors and up to 175 staff members – will host the day to give back.

It’s not just personnel that makes the day possible, 7to7 Dental has cultivated relationship with suppliers Colgate, Darby and Unified Smiles, who donate all the materials like instruments, anesthetics, syringes and toothpaste for that day. Restaurants that 7to7 Dental staff regularly patronize donate food to feed the hungry clinicians. “They are there to support us on the day we are giving to the community – it’s one big circle,” Dr. Winburn said. “The energy is so high. It’s just a fun day.” “Dental Hope strikes a chord in our hearts,” Dr. Winburn said. “As we saw patients or their family members who had needs we would treat them as the ability arose, but it felt catch as catch can. We decided it would be good to set aside a day to serve in a more mindful way. We love what we do and love helping people.” One example was a truck driver without dental insurance who suffered multiple, life-threatening tooth infections that continued to land him in the emergency room. He was stuck in a vicious cycle that was very costly. Dr. Winburn took a personal interest in him and was able to pull all his lower teeth and fit him with dentures. She completed his upper set the next Dental Hope. “He was so excited!” Dr. Winburn said. “His daughters had never seen him smile before.” She added that Dental Hope is specifically for adults, because they so often put themselves last or fall through the cracks of adequate insurance coverage.

Pride in Patriotism Reagan Student Handles Top JROTC Responsibilities
By Amy Morgan

n February Americans celebrate the birthdays of two of our nation’s greatest presidents. Their patriotism has inspired many, including Ronald Reagan High School Senior Andrew Whitney, who holds the highest office in the school’s JROTC program. Andrew’s character is already well documented. Last fall he earned a Good Citizen Award from the Daughters of the American Revolution for his demonstration of leadership, dependability and service. “I am honored for the opportunity given and deeply humbled to be recognized by the members of the faculty and staff in this manner,” Andrew said. “He is efficient, personable and about the most reliable young man I have encountered,” said retired Lieutenant Colonel Chad Livingston, Andrew’s senior JROTC army instructor. High school JROTC is not a recruiting program like its college counterpart; rather, the program teaches citizenship, leadership and working effectively with peers through a military structure under the tutelage of instructors retired from the armed forces, Andrew clarified. As Battalion Commander of Reagan JROTC, Andrew is in charge of the armed drill team, which affords him the honor of carrying the American flag in color guard ceremonies.

The Cadet Lieutenant Colonel will join next year’s freshman class at Texas A&M University, where he anticipates a Naval ROTC scholarship. Andrew looks forward to a military career. He hopes to attend the Navy’s Nuclear Power School, where he will study to become a nuclear engineering officer, responsible to lead a team to maintain the safety and operation of nuclear powered vessels. He will follow the example of his family, as his father was a U.S. Marine. Andrew seeks to combine his passion for leadership and admiration for those who serve with his interest in science, which was nurtured by Reagan chemistry teacher Mrs. Harrell. “I have a desire to lead and be among the nation’s best,” he said. He hopes to continue in honor guard as part of A&M’s Corps of Cadets. The group performs military drill ceremonies such as commemoration of Aggie Muster and Silver Taps. Whether in the classroom, the field or an ocean far away, this world is a little safer with young men like Andrew eager to begin their legacy of service to our country.

Hollywood Happy Ending High School Sweethearts Reunite to Share Golden Years By Amy Morgan
T
he lives of Dr. Rick and Kathryn Gaither read like a script from a Hollywood movie– love lost, found and a heart-warming, happy ending.
The couple, who grew up in Southwest Houston in the early 1960s, went on their first date when Kathryn was just 13 years old. They spent five years together, often spending time at the South Main Drive-in Theater, a popular hangout. After graduation, Rick went off to college and veterinary school at Texas A&M. Like in so many movies, the couple parted ways. Rick commissioned as an officer in the army and enjoyed his military stint so much that he eventually served 28 years, retiring as a Colonel. He remembers driving across the prettiest parts of Europe procuring provisions and ensuring food safety for the troops when he was stationed at The Hague. Military veterinarians overseas perform duties similar to the USDA stateside, he explained. “I used to say to myself, ‘It is not possible I’m being paid to do this!’” Rick’s training alerted him to prevent several potential disasters. He stopped a shipment of tainted pork and prevented Hepatitis-A contaminated milk from being distributed. During this time, Kathryn was living her own movie script. She had secured an accounting position at the hotel directly across the street from NASA. News anchors broadcasted from the top of the roof during the Apollo moon launches. She met Neil Armstrong and Jim Lovell, as the establishment hosted glamorous splashdown parties celebrating successful missions. She eventually became the comptroller for a Houston vehicle leasing company, where she worked for 34 years. In 2009, on her 60th birthday, Kathryn realized her heart’s desire was to see Rick.
50 years after their first date, Dr. Rick and Kathryn Gaither reunited and married in 2014.

Rick had moved to San Antonio and was working at Alamo Dog and Cat Hospital. The practice had just updated its web page, and when Kathryn googled Rick, up popped his picture. After much soul searching, she sent him a letter expressing her feelings. Unbeknownst to her, Rick had gone fishing the day her special delivery letter arrived. Several agonizing weeks passed before he called.

“I got so giddy, it was like I was 16 years old again!” she said. Rick planned a trip to Houston, and it suddenly occurred to her that his last vision of her had been 40 years prior. All worries dispelled when they met. “That was it, my heart burst,” Kathryn said. The couple has been inseparable ever since and officially married Oct. 11, 2014.

The lovebirds settled into their cottage at Independence Hill Retirement Community a little more than a year ago. They enjoy watching the birds on their patio with its maintenancefree lawn. Kathryn remarked how safe they feel. She is not afraid to sit on her porch to gaze at the moon, even in the middle of the night. They also enjoy the camaraderie of the close-knit community and their neighbors.
