CLUB OF SONTERRA NEWS

Life on the Links New PGA Pro Introduces Ideas for Instruction By Amy Morgan

T

he Club at Sonterra is delighted to introduce new PGA Head Golf Professional, Jay Kragh. Jay brings the prestige of his PGA membership to Texas from his previous position in Florida. Jay has several new ideas to invigorate the Club at Sonterra’s golf program. This summer, he’s revamped the PGA summer program for junior golfers 13 and under. He compared the Junior Linksters team competition to “Little League for golf,” and called it an opportunity for young players to improve their golf skills in a fun, friendly format. This program is open to the community, so invite friends! Adults, too, can benefit from new instructional programs. Jay’s holding monthly adult clinics to address topics like chipping, pitching and bunker play in a group setting. And for those looking for an easy way to get started, Jay has planned a golf-ready program to demystify the game and provide an on-ramp for adult beginners. Interested? Call the golf shop at 210-491-9900 or schedule a tour with Membership Director Deborah Routon at 210496-1560.

K9 Conservationalists

Trained Dogs Save Endangered Sea Turtles

scientists designed an innovative plan to transplant some eggs to Texas beaches, where they would be protected and hatch more safely. This strategy also prevented a natural disaster from wiping out remaining nesting areas, further decimating the population. Baby sea turtles imprint the location where they hatch and will return to the shores of their birth to breed as adults. When the first Texas eggs began to hatch, the tiny turtles were released to walk in the waters of North Padre Island, so they would identify their origin. They were then held for safekeeping in tanks until they were old enough to survive life on their own in the ocean. In the ensuing years, these turtles now continue to return to nest annually on the Texas beaches. However, even these beaches aren’t always a safe habitat. Many allow vehicles that can destroy nests, and predators seek the eggs. Sea turtles still remain on the endangered species list. Volunteers scan beaches for females, but nesting sites are easy to miss.

arm weather inspired you to take your furry family member to the beach. Just W as you sit down to relax, you notice a dog wearing orange goggles running down the sand on a mission. It’s a member of the K9s for Conservation pack. That dog is playing a very important role to protect endangered sea turtles.

That is where K9s for Conservation dogs come in. When tracks are observed or a female spotted, specially trained dogs come to sniff out the nest. Without the help of the dogs and their humans, many nests would elude detection. The orange goggles distinguish K9s for Conservation dogs from other pups just enjoying a romp across the sand. Once volunteers collect the sea turtle eggs, they are raised in incubators until they hatch and are large enough to be released. K9s for Conservation founder Chris Fritz learned of this program when he visited the State Park Aquarium. He began recruiting teams to resume the effort when he realized the original K9s had died, leaving the program dormant.

Early in the last century, sea turtle eggs were being collected on Mexican beaches and sold through the black market. Numbers of the endangered species were plummeting, so K9s for Conservation runs solely on donations. Supplies and equipment are costly. Find out how to get involved on the organization’s Facebook and Instagram page.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Renaissance Man Senior Student Excels in Multiple Capacities

By Amy Morgan

W

hile many of his counterparts dream of Spring Break trips to the slopes or beaches, Ronald Reagan Senior James Morin spent his vacation building a Habitat for Humanity house with his father. The two can be found installing siding and roofing during most of James’ breaks from school. James said he finds it very meaningful to interact with the future residents and know he is giving back to his community. When he’s not working with his hands, James is a scholastic whiz. He’s ranked third in his class and is one of Reagan’s seven National Merit Finalists, while holding down a part time job at Chick-fil-A. James particularly enjoys STEM subjects, his favorite - physics with Mr. Pannkuk, the teacher who encouraged him to compete in the school’s Quiz Bowl. While just a sophomore, James participated in the Science Bowl competition sponsored by the Department of Energy that advanced to nationals in Washington D.C. He continues to compete and looks for a return to the final round this year. He also excels in UIL Academics, qualifying in math, science and calculator – even advancing to State competition. Not content to rely on his natural abilities, James devotes hours to analyzing past practice tests and conquering any misunderstood concepts. He also led the Texas novice Latin team to win first at Nationals. With all these academic qualifications, one mighty mistakenly label James as one- dimensional. However, he also sings Bass in Community Bible Church’s choir and taught himself to play piano. He categorizes himself as a “stealth choir guy,” since he practices his musical activities outside of school.

James Morin is a scholastic whiz. He’s ranked third in his class and is one of Reagan’s seven National Merit Finalists, while holding down a part time job at Chick-fil-A.

To complete the well-rounding of his pursuits, James has earned a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and runs Spartan races with his father. The two have traveled across the state and completed 10 of the cross-country obstacle courses, which involve running dozens of miles across hilly terrain, climbing ropes, scaling 12-foot walls and submerging in pits of water. James jumped into a 30-mile race when he was just 17, the youngest runner to compete, as minors are usually prohibited from the grueling events. While a staunch competitor, James remains quiet and humble. The self-directed thinker says, “If you are not the best you can be, you are doing something wrong. You should be the best you can for yourself and others.” He is grateful to God for blessing him and for helping him in his achievements. James was admitted to MIT and will study Mechanical Engineering there.

SENIOR MOMENT

Tennis Trailblazer Coach Ran Celebrity Tournaments, Developed Junior Program By Amy Morgan

I

t’s a rare privilege to get in on the ground floor of a new trend. Trailblazers like Bob Sassano are a special breed. Bob pioneered Florida’s tennis program in the 1970s. He was such an important player the United States Tennis Association recognized him with a Tennis Education Merit Award for his contribution to the game in 1976. Among his accomplishments, raising $384,000 for junior tennis in the Florida Keys. Bob made his mark coaching juniors “When you work with young players, it is a four-year project. There is no end to the ability for improvement,” he said. He loves that tennis is an “honest game” that exposes a player’s talent and dedication. “You can’t just show up and play a little to make an impact.”

Bob Sassano pioneered Florida’s tennis program in the 1970s and made his mark coaching juniors.

Bob was brilliant at developing talent and motivating kids to excel in a way that was challenging yet inspirational. His skills were put to good use with his own family members, all of whom contributed in various ways to the tennis programs he ran. In fact, Bob’s most cherished memories are of his family playing and embracing the sport together. His daughter Lisa was named an All-American tennis player at Trinity University in 1985 and currently coaches the tennis team at Saint Mary’s Hall. His son Michael was ranked 200th in the world. Daughter Susan modeled the tennis fashions and joined his wife running the pro shop. Son JB helped maintain the tennis courts. “It was a family affair,” he said. “We worked together for 30 years in one capacity or another, starting when the children were still in school. If you have an occupation you love, you are never really working a day in your life. And if your family is involved, it is that even more rewarding,” Bob added.

APRIL 30, 2020 - 10:00AM

20500 Huebner Road, San Antonio, Texas 78258

Over the course of his decades-long tennis career in Florida, Bob ran leagues, taught lessons and put together celebrity tournaments, rubbing elbows with the likes of Chris Evert and Bjorn Borg. The star-studded events were the biggest in the business. Jackie Gleason, Sonny Bono, Lloyd Bridges and Linda Carter were those who lent their names to high profile tournaments. Sometimes Bob was able to play a match as well as coordinate. He proudly displays his finalist trophy from the 1982 Linda Evans Bonaventure Inter-Continental Celebrity Pro-Am in his home at Independence Hill Retirement Community. His corner apartment is filled with memorabilia from tennis and travel, along with a restored player piano and his collection of instrument-quality harmonicas. Bob wrests great musical tonality from the harmonica, playing a moving rendition of “How Great Thou Art” for church services at Independence Hill. He often accompanied the choir at St. Justin’s Catholic Church in Key Largo, where his late wife of almost 66 years, Shirley, also worked. Recently, he played “Ave Maria” at St. Bernadette’s Cathedral in Lourdes, France, on a trip with the Knights of Malta. Bob offered his coaches’ expertise about the difference between an expert versus one who is merely “good.” Whether instruments or sport, “a good player plays until he gets it right, the expert plays until he can’t get it wrong.”

Kindly RSVP by April 28th

“I hope I can play as well on God’s court as we did on the other court,” he said.
