Honor Courage Commitment HVAC Company Strengthened by Military Roots
(L-R) Champion AC Co-Owners Chris Stokes and Ben Hubbert with the company mascot, “Champ” By Amy Morgan

ou never know what spring weather will be like in San Antonio. March can come in like a lamb and go out like a lion, or the other way around. But whether cold or hot outside (and you can bet high temperatures are just around the corner), Champion AC can help you control the weather inside your home.
It is important to be able to trust the people you allow into your most private space. Champion AC is veteranowned and operated by Owner/ President Ben Hubbert and Co-Owner/ General Manager Chris Stokes. Together, the Marine and former Air Force Combat Controller dedicated more than 25 years of their lives in service to our country before transitioning to the home service industry. They apply lessons learned during their nine deployments to their business now. Qualities like integrity, trustworthiness, and service shape Champion AC’s core values. Even the Champion name reflects this background. “Champions don’t show up to get everything they want, they show up to give everything they have,” Hubbert said. “Because we are successful, we have to do more to look 4
after the wellbeing of others, to make the right decisions. This stems from the Air Force motto ‘Integrity first, service before self and excellence in all we do.’.” “Exceeding the standard IS our standard,” said Hubbert, an expectation inspired by one of his former Air Force CCT Instructors. “When an air conditioner goes out, there's almost an expectation of expense and inconvenience. We want to change that experience. We listen and find out how we can help fix the problem, save money, even improve lives.”
method — whether phone, email or chat —showing up on time and focusing on quality service. Champion AC is committed to transparency and will soon publish their price list online so customers can be aware of their financial commitment —the first company in South Texas to do so, Hubbert said.
Champion AC is a family oriented company. Employees' birthdays and workversaries are celebrated with BBQ events like this one. “We protect our customers from overpaying, from system failures, and from wasted time,” Hubbert added.
Not surprisingly, Champion AC seeks to hire and retain former service members. The thriving workplace fosters employee flourishing, promotes from within and encourages career growth. Champion AC stocks their vending machine with free food, water and coffee, and more importantly, the company undergirds their employees with health insurance and matches retirement savings. Champion AC even helps employees create strategies to reduce debt and achieve life goals. Hubbert and Stokes believe that a well-supported employee is happier, less stressed and better able to project a positive attitude to customers.
It’s this work ethic and dedication to customer service that caused Champion AC to be named the fastest growing Trane dealer in the nation — number one in equipment growth and second place in parts and supplies at a recent Top Ten Conference. Trane is consistently recognized as the industry leader in air conditioning systems by Consumer Reports. Because of their size and volume, Champion AC negotiates with suppliers for best equipment pricing and passes those savings along to customers, Hubbert said. He started Champion AC 13 years ago. The company has since served more than 55,000 customers. The full-service HVAC company provides residential and commercial heating, air conditioning, electrical services and smart home security. They service, maintain and install air conditioning equipment, offer warranties with no fine print and quality workmanship that can be trusted. The company is rated A+ by the Better Business Bureau and has more than 3,385 five-star reviews. Champion AC won Angie’s List Super Service awards for outstanding service both in and outside of the office in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. The company strives to continually upgrade customer experience, communicating via the customer’s preferred
And it’s not just employees Champion AC seeks to uplift. The corporate culture again returns to its military roots in the desire to serve the community. Champion AC has long modeled giving back – whether to champions in the military through Operation Comfort or Warrior Transition Battalion, or its decades-long partnership with KENS 5. Recently, Champion AC became KENS 5’s inaugural sponsor of a Positivity Project to promote random acts of community kindness through its “Kindness Crew.” Just last month the company gave away thousands of dollars to families attending the rodeo —paying for admissions, rides, funnel cakes— spreading happiness one person at a time. “We are blessed, able-bodied and successful,” Hubbert said. “We have a duty to help others. These values were born out of our military service, but we’ve always had a heart for the community.” He remembers times being tough as a child and how much kindness shown to his mother meant. “I always knew I wanted to be in the position to lift someone else when they were down. Chris has the same focus of servant leadership,” he added. The commitment of a champion —serving with excellence —remains the heartbeat of Champion AC.

SENIOR MOMENT
She's A Gem Senior Helped Open Local Jewelry Store By Amy Morgan
M
artha Schmidt will celebrate her 89th birthday next month. The outgoing octogenarian was born on a Louisiana cotton farm fifty miles south of Shreveport during the early years of the depression. Although the youngest of nine, Martha was a welcome surprise to her middle aged parents. She remembers attending the same elementary school as her older siblings during the World War II years and watching her brothers and sisters’ husbands leave to serve. Her oldest brother, Ernest Holcomb, stormed Normandy with the 101st Airborne Division. He was in a glider picking off German soldiers who were aiming for Allied troops on the beach. After surviving that assault, he was sent to the Battle of the Bulge, where he chauffeured General Patton’s Jeep. Despite the danger, Ernest returned home safely and lived to the ripe old age of 77. Martha’s youngest brother, Herman, joined the marines when he was just 17. The only information he shared is that he took photographs from airplanes. Could he have been involved in reconnaissance? Espionage? “Our generation didn’t boast about our service or accomplishments,” Martha said. Another brother, Hardy, served stateside, as did her sister’s husband, who was renown for baking excellent pies in the Air Force. After the war, Martha’s siblings convinced her parents to move so Martha could benefit from Texas’ superior school system. She excelled in office skills, and after graduating high school with honors, Martha went to live with her sister in San Antonio. She was secretary to the accountant at McKesson, when she caught the eye of co-worker Joe Schmidt. They were married for 49 years and raised their children in Hollywood Park. Her son, daughter, and their families visit Martha often at her home in Independence Hill Retirement Community. The little ones love to watch the koi fish swim in the indoor pond, and Martha appreciates the on-site hair and nail salon. She has made many friends in the five years she has lived there. When Martha’s children grew and became more independent, she helped a friend found the Diamontrigue business in the early 1970s. Her idea to market the jeweler’s ability to duplicate expensive diamond pieces in cubic zirconia for travel led to the creation of the retail store in Dijon Plaza. Martha was in charge of banking, hiring, and payroll and remained an integral part of the business for 37 years. “It is so strange how life happens,” Martha said. “Somebody up there has a big book. If you want something written on your page of life, you’d better make it good.” For more information about the lifestyle offered at Independence Hill, call (210) 764-5260, or go to www.independencehill.com.
Martha Schmidt founded Diamondtrigue with a friend in the 1970’s. To this day, true San Antonians remember the slogan, “We won’t tell, if you don’t tell.”

Caring for Community 7to7 Dental Gives Free Dental Care By Amy Morgan hat an outstanding day of giving! 7to7 Dental & Orthodontics provided 376 free dental procedures to 185 adult patients at the Dental Hope service day Saturday, February 15. People began gathering before 7 a.m., and everyone in line by 11 a.m. was able to be treated. This was the seventh year 7to7 Dental has dedicated an entire day to give back to their community.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Student Scientist Reagan Senior Researches Rocket Engineering as a Hobby
By Amy Morgan
M
any students in their final semester of high school could be described as suffering from “senioritis.” Not Ronald Reagan senior Jason Dones, who will graduate Summa Cum Laude and then major in physics. After his summer internship concluded at Southwest Research Institute, Jason was not ready to finish his research. He drove to the institute weekly before school to continue his experiments on atmospheric ion propulsion. The application for his study: designing spacecraft engines he hopes will enable planes or rockets to fly without using fossil fuels and thus reduce pollution. “Jason has always accepted every challenge and is willing to go above and beyond,” said Counselor Matt Eidson. “He is not driven by selfish purposes, he just wants to be as educated and knowledgeable as he possibly can.” While Jason enjoys his physics classes, he considers his passion for international relations equally fascinating. He serves as a delegate on Reagan’s Model UN team, highlights of which include attending a competition at the actual United Nations’ headquarters in New York City. He enjoys assuming the perspective of his assigned country as he discusses sustainability, human trafficking and climate change, not the usual talking points for high school seniors. These interests led Jason to found the National Empowerment Alliance. Now in the process of becoming a non-profit, the organization encourages young people to become involved in their community. He was motivated by the lack of awareness he noticed among peers during the 2016 election and wanted others to have a source of unbiased, non-partisan, local information. As president, he recruits speakers to talk to members, held a voter registration drive and more.
Reagan Senior Jason Dones founded the National Empowerment Alliance to encourage fellow students to become involved in their community.
“I found that a lot of people didn’t seem informed,” he said. “They weren’t able to explain what their beliefs were founded on.” Like his sister, Lauren, a 2018 Reagan graduate, Jason is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers, with which he founded a summer day camp for less privileged students living on San Antonio’s Eastside. His care for the less fortunate extends to his work with Sleep in Heavenly Peace, through which he built and installed bunk beds. “The best part is that I put them (the beds) together in their rooms,” he said. “One family had a bed donated from church without a mattress,” he added. “It was just dirty clothes piled together. In the end, the kids were jumping on the bed with massive smiles on their faces. It was really rewarding.”

Selecting the Optimal Food for your Pup
Choosing Chow
Kibble (AKA dry) is the most common dog food. Bags of crunchy or chewy bits can be found in all shapes, sizes and price ranges, with options specific to breed, age, activity level, size…. The list is almost endless and mindboggling. The best rule of thumb when making a selection is to read the ingredient list, making note of the main ones. Highly processed ingredients are a red flag that a brand may be one to avoid. A popular option trending currently is food labeled “grain free.” However, recent articles have been casting doubt upon the benefit of that option. One upside of grain free is that the higher ratio of protein to carbohydrates may be easier on the canine digestive system. “Raw” is another term that has been touted as having health benefits for your pup.
