Salon Sensation

Veronyka’s Color Salon moves to new location.

Owner, Veronyka Bass, shows off her new location for Veronyka’s Color Salon.

nstead of dreaming what could be, Veronyka Bass spent her youth planning what her life would be. “I’ve always been a goal setter,” she says. “You can do anything you set your mind too.” And has she ever! Veronyka’s Color Salon is one of the most successful salons in far north San Antonio. Recently, Veronyka moved her location from the La Arcata Shopping Plaza to The Park office center, located just south of Loop 1604 on Blanco road. “It’s a small casita-like space that looks like apartments. It’s nice here, and my salon is perfect for my clients' needs,” explains Bass. The two-room salon features three salon chairs spaced six feet apart to keep clients socially distanced from each other. Veronyka glides

from chair to chair as she performs cuts, color and styles to three of her clients at one time. In fact, Veronyka schedules her appointments from 5 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday-Saturday every week and sees up to 50 clients per day. Her work ethic and willingness to accommodate her clients' busy schedules is one of the key reasons she has been so successful. “I’m here

clients at all times. Patio chairs and a table are provided outside if a customer arrives to their appointment early.

Veronyka’s Color Salon clients can wait safely outside on the patio before their appointment. for the client, for the working force, for busy people who work long hours,” Bass says.

Born into a modest family in Mexico, Bass moved to San Antonio in 1981. She has been a master stylist and color specialist for more than 35 years. “Clients like to see me,” she knows. “My name is on the building.” She is excited about the move and new location and looks forward to hearing the positive feedback from her customers. “I think this is going to prove to be a phenomenal new location,” says Bass. Watch the video for the full story.

The COVID-19 virus has changed the way every company does business these days, and Veronyka’s Color Salon is no different. All clients are greeted at the door with hand sanitizer and must wear a mask in the salon at all times. The salon chairs are spaced six feet apart and are disinfected and cleaned after every customer’s visit. Veronyka herself wears a mask, face shield and gloves to protect her

SENIOR MOMENT

98 Years Young WWII War Bride Relishes America’s Freedom By Amy Morgan

inety-eight-year-old Caroline Uberta’s life story unfolds like a historical novel. Born in Germany in 1922, she witnessed the events of WWII firsthand as a young teen, as her family found themselves on the wrong side of Hitler’s Nazi regime. Caroline actually saw the Fuhrer in person once, as he was observing the opening procession of the 1936 Olympics. Caroline was present to compete as a gymnast. Alas, she only participated in one event before the Olympic officials disqualified her for being underage — Caroline was not quite 14. Because of the war, the games were cancelled in 1940 and 1944, so she never had another opportunity to resume. Instead, she and her younger sister, Annie, were conscripted to work for the Nazis. Caroline recalls a plan to reveal dissenters several years into Hitler’s reign. Entire families, including children, were required to present themselves as parents voted. “There were only two boxes on the ballot, one for, and one against Hitler,” she said. “I watched my dad making the cross on the no. Little did we know that would put us on the black list.”

Ninety-eight-year-old Caroline Uberta’s life story unfolds like a historical novel. Born in Germany in 1922, she witnessed the events of WWII firsthand as a young teen, as her family found themselves on the wrong side of Hitler’s Nazi regime.

Her father, a musician, was sent away to perform for Nazi officers. The rest of the family was also required to work jobs of the government’s choosing. Caroline ended up tracking Allied aircraft in an underground War Room. As soon as she realized the Nazis wouldn’t be able to force her to stay, she packed her bags. However, the family’s troubles weren’t over. After the war, there was little food for Germany’s population. Caroline came close to perishing from anemia due to lack of nutrition. Eventually, life improved. At Annie’s urging she agreed to go on a date with her future husband, Eugene, an Army GI stationed in Germany. “I didn’t know one word of English,” Caroline said. “My sister told me to just say, ‘no’ to anything he said.” Caroline was charmed by Eugene’s gentlemanly manners. He sent for her after he shipped back stateside, and they were married in Indianapolis in November 1947. Eugene was one of 13 siblings in an Italian-American family. The Ubertas were married 60 years and have one daughter, Linda. After Eugene passed 15 years ago, Caroline and Linda lived together in Colorado Springs until they moved to San Antonio last year to be closer to Linda’s children and grandchildren. Caroline was just settling into her apartment in Independence Hill Retirement Community when Covid-19 slowed things down. She enjoys exercise and hopes to resume group classes soon. Caroline speaks with Linda, the light of her life, every day and looks forward to meeting her for a restaurant meal soon. Caroline is grateful that her new home allows her to be close to her family. Caroline’s experiences in post-war Germany are forever burned into her memory. She, her sister and her parents all passed their tests to gain American citizenship. She prizes her freedom from a tyrannical dictatorship and urges fellow Americans not to take their liberty for granted. What Families are saying about “From the moment we took the tour, my Grandma was confident she wanted to move in. Independence Hill provided everything she was looking for and more. It’s like living in an “all inclusive resort”, except you get to sleep in your own bed and use a full size kitchen if you feel like it. Plus they have housekeeping! The staff is so compassionate and accommodating, she feels like they have become part of the family. They are great at communicating what is happening to all during this difficult time. There is no way I would be able to make sure she stays safe and healthy without their help. Plus the snacks and adult beverages they bring to the residents as “pick me ups” are the icing on the cake! I am so grateful for the IH team.” – Cristina, granddaughter

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Student Scientist

ike most Ronald Reagan High School seniors, Ethan Bull and his twin sister, Daniella, are eager to get back to school and resume studies and activities with their peers. Ethan, a National Merit Semifinalist ranked second in his class, excels at Math and Science UIL competitions. Daniella is the line leader for the flute section of Reagan’ award-winning marching band. Both hope to soon to be back on campus pursuing their passions. In addition to UIL competitions, Ethan also is involved in Science and Quiz bowls under the direction of Reagan teachers Mr. Pankuk and Mrs. Rodriguez. In Quiz Bowl, he enjoys the challenge of testing his knowledge against others on a wide variety of topics from history to literature, he said. Science Bowl allows him to focus on the biology questions at which he particularly excels. Ethan is the ace-in-the-hole teammate who knows the correct answer to the request to name the plant hormone responsible for phototropism and gravitropism. Ethan has participated in Regan’s Science Bowl team since his sophomore year. The national competition is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy in Washington D.C. The team hoped to advance to regionals this spring, but travel and events were cancelled this year. Not to be deterred, Ethan has continued to prepare for the next opportunity, studying this summer using the computer model Protobowl.

Like most Ronald Reagan High School seniors, Ethan Bull and his twin sister, Daniella, are eager to get back to school and resume studies and activities with their peers.

Ethan hopes to parlay his interests into a career in medicine. Last summer he attended the National Student Leadership Conference (NSLC) at Rice University. The curriculum exposed the students to different aspects of the medical field and offered hands-on experiences with professional instruments and practices. His time at NSLC caused Ethan to realize he is fascinated by pathology. He is particularly interested in making diagnoses from specimens and samples to problem-solve health puzzles, he said. Ethan was accepted into the junior medicine program at Methodist Hospital this summer, but that activity, too, was sidelined by Covid-19. Like his sister, Ethan also displays musical talent. He began playing piano at the age of five and participated in solo and ensemble events with the help of Reagan’s choir director until schedule conflicts caused him to prioritize Science Bowl. The Bull family has lived in Stone Oak since the twins were in pre-school. Ethan and Daniella attended Hardy Oak Elementary School and Lopez Middle School. Their father, a chemical engineer, met their mother while he was working overseas in Taiwan. Every two years the family returns to Taiwan to spend time with extended family and sightsee. Ethan hopes to major in biology or biochemistry at Rice, the University of Houston or UT Austin. Just as he excels in finding answers for UIL competition, this young scientist may someday serve on the cutting edge of developing prevention and treatment for diseases of the future.

Dental Dilemma

Do You Really Need to Brush Your Dog’s Teeth? Bones, rawhides, and rope toys can be a great way to prevent plaque build-up on your dog’s teeth and supplement brushing. “The act of chewing actually benefits your dog’s oral health, in and of itself, regardless of what is being chewed on,” according to the American Kennel Club, “as the gnawing scrapes plaque off your dog’s teeth.”

T

he last time you took your pup in for a check up, you may have been surprised that your veterinarian spent as much time evaluating your furry family member’s dental health as he did his medical records. Poor dental health in humans has been linked to cardiovascular issues, lung infections, dementia, and more. So why aren’t we taking it more seriously for our pets? Do you really need to brush Fido’s teeth? Take a peek inside your pup’s mouth. Some signs of dental problems can be bad breath, red gums, hesitance chewing food, pawing or constant licking of the mouth, and discolored or loose teeth. Did you know that the majority of pets begin to show signs of dental health issues by the time they are just three years old! Don’t delay, take your vet’s advice and start your canine companion on a dental maintenance program as soon as possible. The best prevention against tooth decay is to brush your dog’s teeth daily with a dog-friendly toothpaste. Most pups aren’t too fond of the idea at first, but you can train them to tolerate it in the same way you do nail trims. Canine toothpaste also comes in a variety of yummy flavors like peanut butter and chicken. Some brushes fit over your fingertip to make the bristles easier to maneuver in Fido’s mouth.

Similarly, you can find a variety of dog dental treats designed to remove plaque that contain ingredients that freshen breath and kill oral bacteria. Tooth wipes are also available and may be slightly easier to use than a toothbrush, although they won’t reach every nook and cranny in your pup’s mouth. If a daily tooth-cleaning wrestling match with Fido does not sound appealing, you can also have your dog’s teeth professionally cleaned at your veterinarian’s office. Your vet is experienced in preventing, locating, and treating any issues that might otherwise remain unnoticed. During a cleaning, your vet will be able to address any oral health issues and/or remove teeth as necessary. Although not an inexpensive option, professional dental cleaning is the best way to maintain your furry family member’s dental health. Consult with your vet to create the right dental hygiene plan for your furry family member.
