SENIOR MOMENT

The Rocket Man Scientist Engaged Students with Experiments By Amy Morgan

D

uring the early years of their almost six decades of marriage, John and Sylvia Theall had the rare opportunity to rub shoulders with pioneers of America’s fledgling space program. John had been teaching high school science when he was recruited by NASA to boost public interest in space and science. He maneuvered a mobile education vehicle across the county — making NASA’s rocket science program come alive to students from kindergarten to high school. John’s presentation included launching model rockets, but his favorite demonstration involved spilling a bucket of liquid oxygen toward the crowd. Rather than soaking the bystanders as they expected, the chemical would evaporate right before the eyes of the astonished students. “I threw it right at them —the kids went nuts!” he said, with a twinkle in his eye. Part of his training included meeting Buzz Aldrin, John Glenn, ... all the astronauts, John said. Glenn, in particular, had a soft spot for children that he demonstrated by creating autographed mementos for John to leave with the schools. Other highlights included attending a Florida space launch and being selected to conduct cutting-edge research at several National Science Foundation Summer Institutes.

During the early years of their almost six decades of marriage, John and Sylvia Theall had the rare opportunity to rub shoulders with pioneers of America’s fledgling space program. John had been teaching high school science when he was recruited by NASA to boost public interest in space and science.

Sylvia and John first met when she joined his faculty at Jones High School in Houston as a student teacher. Their paths crossed again the next year on a double date with friends, and they were married in 1962 at the Cathedral in Sylvia’s hometown of Galveston. She taught English and Business as their two daughters, Tracy and Michelle, joined the family.

NASA eventually phased out the mobile space program, and John was approached by Silver Burdett publishing to edit science textbooks. He revamped the elementary science curriculum to make it more interesting to the students. The key was adding relevant experiments that harkened back to his days at NASA. Silver Burdett Elementary Science became the most successful series of its kind - lasting for almost 30 years. The Thealls noted that Tracy’s picture conducting an experiment as a 7-year-old was featured in the publication. The couple eventually retired to San Antonio to be close to Tracy and her children. Sylvia enjoyed substitute teaching at Reagan High School while the grandkids were students. Avid readers, the Thealls participate in book clubs both at The Club at Sonterra and at Independence Village, to which the couple moved in November. While COVID-19 has put the kibosh on some activities, the Thealls appreciate efforts by the Independence Village staff to plan fun and fellowship. “They come with a trolley to our homes three times a week to do something special — banana splits, donuts, wine tasting…,” Sylvia said. “We all open our garages and sit out and talk with each other. They have done a wonderful job!” The Thealls heard about Independence Village from friends at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, located just across the street, where the musical couple sings in choir. “We love the people here,” Sylvia enthused. Fall Fantastic

By Tamara Wetegrove

O

ctober in San Antonio brings the hope that cooler weather might soon be on its way. There's nothing like that first whisper of a cool breeze to entice you and your furry family member to head out to one of our community’s parks and trails. Stone Oak has several just waiting to be discovered. And enjoying a walk or run with your pup is a great way to experience an outdoor activity while still staying socially distanced. However, some of fall’s traditions might pose health hazards for your canine companion.

You might be inspired to join the COVID baking craze and try your hand at a fall apple pie. Did you know apples can be harmful to your pup? It’s not the fruit so much as the stems and seeds. Clean up peels and cores promptly so as not to attract canine admirers. (And while you are at it, don’t forget to secure that freshly baked pie with its tempting aroma out of Fido’s reach to avoid a puppy pie heist). Whether or not your family plans to trick-or-treat this October, those tempting bags of brightly wrapped candy seem to somehow make their way home from the store this time of year. Candy, and especially chocolate, can be deadly to dogs. Make sure to stash your tasty seasonal treats where your pup can’t find them.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

STEM Scholar

By Amy Morgan

S

enior year at Ronald Reagan High School did not begin exactly how student Aidan Griffith had envisioned. the National Merit Semi-finalist was looking forward to returning to campus with his peers, but that anticipated day has been further postponed due to changing COVID-19 protocols. Aidan reports that Reagan has adapted to a block schedule, so classes alternate. Ranked number three in his class, with a 113.8 GPA, Aidan participates in the Science National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta. He also enjoys UIL Science team competitions, which he hopes will be able to resume. Computer science engineering, and in particular its application to the brain and artificial intelligence, interest Aidan, who hopes to pursue neuroscience as a profession. He mentioned programming class with Mr. Arteaga as being particularly inspiring. One project involved using different computer languages and programs to create an interactive zoo, he remembered. As president of Reagan’s National Honor Society, Aidan and the other officers are planning how to serve in a world where most activities are still online or been sidelined. “We know a lot of people are hurting right now, so we need to come together as a community once this is all over to help each other out,” he said.

One of the bright spots of Aidan’s summer was being able to return to his position as a barista at a Stone Oak Starbucks. COVID caused staff turnover, and Aidan rose to become a certified barista trainer, teaching three new hires. He reports that working in the real world, with real consequences, (and who hasn’t witnessed an impatient customer barking at a barista), taught him invaluable lessons in how lead a team. A basketball player himself, Aidan assists his father in coaching his younger brother’s team. Fortunately, the 6th graders from Lopez Elementary captured the season championship this spring just before activities halted, Aidan reported. He marks the world’s change by the first Sunday his family attended mass virtually. “Having online church has been weird, because for as long as I can remember, every Sunday, we would be at church sitting in the pews with the rest of our parish,” he said. Aidan also serves as a crew leader for Holy Trinity Catholic Church’s Middle School Edge Ministry. Aidan’s older brother and sister (Reagan grads) returned home from college and the close family bonded even more as they ”played games, enjoyed deserts and adapted to the new world together,” he said. Aidan’s favorite school memories are times spent cheering with the crowd for Reagan’s competitive sports teams. Hopefully, he’ll be able to join fellow Rattlers in the stands soon.
