The economic war between the U.S. and China has proved to be a blessing in disguise for the exporters of processed granite slabs from the Building Products Special Economic Zone at Gullapalli in Prakasam district.

The 100% export-oriented units, which process the world-famous black galaxy and other granite rough blocks and export mostly to the U.S. are reaping a windfall in the wake of the U.S. Department of Commerce imposing triple-digit duties on imports of Chinese quartz used in manufacturing countertops and other household surfacing. The company sees a good demand for its natural coloured material from overseas players, especially from the U.S., following imposition of 360% anti-dumping duty on Chinese quartz. Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) has promoted Growth Centre to add value to the rough granite blocks mined from the famous Chimakurthy mines. Export of coloured natural stone material including Black Pearl, Steel Grey, Viscount White, Moon White and River White varieties from the SEZ are expected to pick up during this fiscal. On an average, 500 containers of processed granite slabs were exported from the SEZ, including the U.S. and West Asian countries, every month, earning precious foreign exchange to the tune of over Rs. 6,000 crore per annum in the last fiscal. According to the sources of the industry the present market condition is conducive for granite exports to go up by 20% to 30% this year from 60,000 cubic metres done by the processing units in the SEZ last year. However, the nascent quartz units fear a slump in business as the U.S. Department of Commerce has set in motion the process for imposing antidumping duty on Indian quartz after a complaint lodged by a domestic quartz manufacturer seeking imposition of 345% anti-dumping duty on exports from India. According to the industry sources the proposal has created a lot of unrest among manufacturers of artificial quartz manufacturers. Authorities have now sought data from exporters of Indian quartz. The industry wants that the Director General of Foreign Trade should intervene on their behalf during the proceedings initiated by the Department of Commerce and give a factual account of the subsidy provided to them. In view of the prevailing uncertainty, new players have decided to put their plans of setting up quartz processing units in the region on hold. K. Vikram Rastogi

STONA 2020 ROAD SHOW IN UDAIPUR AND JALORE STONA 2020 is being organised in five halls from 6th to 9th February, 2020 in Bangalore at Bangalore International Exhibition Centre. Almost 75% of the area has been sold. For publicity, promotion and marketing of STONA 2020, road shows were organized at Hotel Lakend in Udaipur on 18th July, 2019 and Hotel Krishana in Jalore on 19th July, 2019. About 200 industrialist attended the road show in Udaipur. 50 industrialists attended the show while 11 industrialists became members of FIGSI in Jalore.

Known for its fine quality, marble from Makrana in Rajasthan has become Asia’s first Global Heritage Stone Resource (GHSR), as confirmed by the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). The Makrana marble is the first stone resource from India and Asia to get the GHSR status, confirms IUGS, an international non-governmental organisation devoted to international cooperation in the field of geology. "Good news for State that International Union of Geological Sciences, @theIUGS has confirmed #Makrana Marble to be #Asia's first Global Heritage Stone Resource (GHSR). It will give international recognition to Makrana Marble and help in its conservation too. #Rajasthan," Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot tweeted.

Makrana marble is a metamorphic rock, found in a single deposit in India, which has about 90–98% C a l c i u m Carbonate. The marble is found only in Makrana, a small town situated 110 km west of Jaipur. Those associated with the stone industry see this as news that will bring inflation in the stone trade. "Its a matter of prestige to everyone who is associated with Rajasthan, especially dealing with stones. After getting GIT awards, this new tag will bring Rajasthan on a world map and will help to flourish the depleting trade of Makrana marble, which is the best quality of marble in the world," The renowned sites where Makrana marble is used are Humayun’s Tomb in New Delhi; Dukhnivaran Sahib Gurdwara, Ludhiana; Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi and the Victoria Memorial in Kolkatta. Besides its use in monuments, the marble is commonly used in the sculpture industry of India. The sculptors see the newly attained tag as a revival of the art's popularity. "This will certainly gain its lost popularity. From last few years, white marble from Vietnam was used as a replacement because it was less expensive. But now people will start buying the sculptures made from the original Makrana marble which will give a boost to the local marble industry".

HERITAGE

PRAMBANAN – A HINDU TEMPLE IN INDONESIA The Prambanan or “many priests” temple is the largest Hindu temple in Indonesia. Prambanan was built in 850 and today the temple complex is being reconstructed. One of the most imposing features are the scattered ruins of Prambanan’s 224 outer temples. As visitors enter the heart of the temple complex, they discover eight major and eight minor temple clusters. Their elaborately carved stupas praise Trimurti, a manifestation of Brahma the Creator, Vishnu the Preserver and Shiva the Destroyer.

The Prambanan temple is the largest Hindu temple of ancient Java, and the first building was completed in the mid-9th century. The construction of Prambanan probably was meant to mark the return of the Hindu Sanjaya Dynasty to power in Central Java after almost a century of Buddhist Sailendra Dynasty domination. The construction of this massive Hindu temple signifies that the Medang court had shifted its patronage from Mahayana Buddhism to Shaivite Hinduism. According to the Shivagrha inscription of 856 CE, the temple was built to honuor Lord Shiva, and its original name was Shiva-grha (the House of Shiva) or Shiva-laya (the Realm of Shiva). According to inscription, a public water project to change the course of a river near Shivagrha temple was undertaken during the construction of the temple. The river, identified as the Opak River, now runs north to south on the western side of the Prambanan temple compound. Historians suggest that originally the river was curved further to east and was deemed too near to the main temple. The project was done by cutting the river along a north to south axis along the outer wall of the Shivagrha Temple compound. The former river course was filled in and made level to create a wider space for the temple expansion, the space for rows of pervara (complementary) temples. The temple compound was expanded by successive Mataram kings, such as Daksa and Tulodong, with the addition of hundreds of perwara temples around the chief temple. Prambanan served as the royal temple of the Kingdom of Mataram, with most of the state's religious ceremonies and sacrifices being conducted there. At the height of the kingdom, scholars estimate that hundreds of brahmins with their disciples lived within the outer wall of the temple compound. The urban center and the court of Mataram were located nearby, somewhere in the Prambanan Plain.

Abandonment In the 930s, the court was shifted to East Java by Mpu Sindok, who established the Isyana Dynasty. An eruption of Mount Merapi volcano, located north of Prambanan in central Java, or a power struggle probably caused the shift. That marked the beginning of the decline of the temple. It was soon abandoned and began to deteriorate. The temples collapsed during a major earthquake in the 16th century. Although the temple ceased to be an important center of worship, the ruins scattered around the area were still recognizable and known to the local Javanese people in later times. The statues and the ruins became the theme and the inspiration for the Loro Jonggrang folktale. After the division of Mataram Sultanate in 1755, the temple ruins and the Opak River were used to demarcate the boundary between Yogyakarta and Surakarta (Solo) Sultanates, which was adopted as the current border between Yogyakarta and the province of Central Java.

Rediscovery The Javanese locals in the surrounding villages knew about the temple ruins before formal rediscovery, but they did not know about its historical background: which kingdoms ruled or which king commissioned the construction of the monuments. In 1918, the Dutch began reconstruction of the compound and proper restoration only in 1930. Efforts at restoration continue to this day. The reconstruction of the main Shiva temple was completed around 1953 and inaugurated by Sukarno. Since much of the original stonework has been stolen and reused at remote construction sites, restoration was hampered considerably. Given the scale of the temple complex, the government decided to rebuild shrines only if at least 75% of their original masonry was available. Most of the smaller shrines are now visible only in their foundations, with no plans for their reconstruction.

With the RCC structure already in place, JJ Design, Pune made a few civil changes including revising the position and size of the window openings to harmoniously unify the outdoors and indoor areas. The final result was achieved by carefully planning the elevational treatment and appropriate selection of colour scheme before and after the finishes. As far as flooring is concerned, the kitchen has Bianco Carrara Italian marble, the guest bedroom has Italian tiles, the master bedroom has Noisetteflurry Italian marble and the family room also has Bianco Carrara Italian marble.

The kitchen is designed using materials which would not compromise with the aesthetics, but at the same time require minimal maintenance - Titanium Travertino Italian marble for wall cladding, Kohibo brown granite for kitchen platform, Italian highlighter for Dado and white lamination polish for kitchen trolleys. The design manifest on under stated elegance. Through not flamboyant. The design displays freshness of approach and distinct creativity.

THE COACH HOUSE IN MALTA

Valletta transformed it into a contemporary residence that retains its original character. First the architects restored the dilapidated structure to a suitable condition by repairing stone walls that were missing mortar joints and had been damaged by plants growing between the stones. They also restored original openings in the wall before focusing on the addition of a first floor extension that houses a new master suite & additional bedroom. The vertical extension exactly follows the perimeter of the existing building and is clad in stone blocks laid at an angle to produce a pattern of geometric shadows. All extensions & their structural interventions were carried out in a way to ensure the protection of the existing building and the reversibility of new additions.

Architecture office AP Valletta has restored an old coach house in the town of Balzan, Malta, adding a contemporary extension featuring a weave-patterned stone facade. The Coach House occupies a building situated alongside the 18th century Palazzo Bosio, which is located within a conservation area on the edge of Balzan's historic centre. The original building is thought to predate the main palazzo, and is likely to have always functioned as a service building. AP

A contemporary private residence on the SouthWest Coast of Jersey, this project is perched above the rocky coastline of Corbiere and the expansive St Quens Bay. The internal stone needed to be a continuation of the external finishes. This continued through windows and doors with minimal frames and the Cumbrian slate was used to clad selected internal walls. The sourcing and installation being the same as the external application, and the environmentally friendly aspect of using the reclaimed Cumbrian slate was important feature in the selection of this stone. The brief was to find a stone that was sympathetic to the surrounding and the tradition of dry stone walling in Jersey and still add to the contemporary minimalist design of the building. After looking at various granites and limestones from Europe, Burlington Stone weathered walling was chosen as it perfectly suited the desired building colouring. The grey/blue tone and the browns and oranges blended in with surrounding local rock and gave a more natural and weathered look to the building. The material was dressed on site and fixed with a mortar bed set back from the face to give a dry stone wall effect. Stonemasons visited the Cumbrian quarry to hand pick all the stones for its size, shape & colour. This carefully selected material was used to make all the facades, the sharp corners & deep reveats for windows & doors. The architect wanted the glass to appear to slice through the rock without a large windows frame. Every care and attention to detail has been taken during the internal design work and this has been more than supplemented by superior site management, supply chain quality control and effective and sophisticated craftsmanship that exudes quality throughout.

Mount Stewart House County Down

Mount Stewart, located on the shores of Strangford Lough in County Down, is Northern Irelands much loved family home. Following a three year £8 million restoration programme, this 19th century house has been significantly transformed, making it a must-see attraction on the island of Ireland.

The team completed the painstaking task of cutting away the overlying black and white linoleum and bitumen. Fine sharp chisels and hand tools were used to minimise the impact on the original underlying sandstone. Wherever possible stones were repaired in situ or lifted and re-bedded and almost the entire floor was grouted and re-pointed.

Located in a 19th century house and garden in County Down, Northern Ireland, Mount Stewart House is in the care of the National Trust and is the family home of the Londonderry family. The house is one of Ireland’s most popular tourist attractions and had recently undergone a major three year restoration project.

Mount Stewart has collections of international and national significance and one of the most significant silver displays in the Trust’s care. Exquisite family collections were on show including works of Lawrence, Brock and Stubbs. Visitors have the opportunity to explore this wonderful home at their leisure or by guided tours to learn more about the Londonderry family and the important role they played in local and international history.

The original sandstone floor had been covered with a 30mm screed of bitumen overlaid by a linoleum finish in the 1960s. The tiles had subsequently been renewed in 2006. The objective of the project was to return the central hall to its former glory and reveal the sandstone floor. Initial investigations and trials were carried out in 2014 and 2016 in order to try and understand the details of the present floor covering, methods for its removal and to gain a snapshot indication of the condition of the underlying sandstone.

Rever Plate House This project saw the all development of River Plate House in Finsbury Circus. The brief called for an exemplary new office building on a historic city of London Site.

The building is configured around a central core, providing large column free office space at all levels. A sculptural main circulation stair has been positioned with good visibility from the core to encourage use of stair between floors. Within the impressive reception a traditional palette of stone, bronze and walnut is imaginatively detailed to provide an uplifting environment for the occupiers. The lift shafts, in translucent glazing, provide both a source of light and movement, with the lift cars casting shadows as they rise and descend. A walnut clad recess in the carved stone wall on the east side of the reception houses a sleek reception desk and provides views into the lower levels of the light well. Wilkinson Eyre has designed two walnut veneered sculptures which act as focal points within the large space. Close collaboration with the client has resulted in a beautiful building with complex geometries, 15,000m² of grade space, new entrances, retail provision and a richness of detail that retains the integrity of the Circus. The development takes a traditional palette of materials, including Portland stone, and unites them in a contemporary piece of architecture with modernist stone detailing.

The site is adjacent to the listed Britannic House by Edwin Lutyens and forms part of the buildings that edge the Circus, the largest open public space within the City’s boundaries.

TUÑÓN ARQUITECTOS' CASA DE PIEDRA

Tuñón Arquitectos has completed Casa de Piedra, a house in the town of Cáceres, Spain, which is built from solid stone and laid out in a grid of nine cube shaped rooms. Casa de Piedra is built from local quartzite, with windows framed in granite. Located on a plot sloping slightly down towards the town, Tuñón Arquitectos

designed its thick walls to shade residents from the sun and provide privacy. Small, square oak-framed skylight windows bring more light into the deep stone recesses. Each of the house’s four elevations is punctured by three square windows, which align with the regularly arraigned rooms in side.

A patchwork of roughly hewn local stone and smooth plaster forms the facades of this house, designed by architects Nomo Studio to overlook the sea in Menorca. The Barcelona based architects used limestone that was excavated from the foundations of Stone House for its facade. The studio wanted the residence to reference traditional Menorcan architecture but avoid falling into pure replica. Modern common treatments were avoided that imitate oldness. The blending of local architectural customs and materials with modern architectural forms and construction methods also helped reconcile conflicting briefs from their clients. At the north-facing front of Stone House is a 100-squaremetre porch. It features an opening glazed facade, which means it can be used as shaded area open to the elements in summer, or enclosed to form a winter garden in cooler seasons. The porch leads through a central, double-height reception area that acts as the heart of the home. Glazing runs along the upper-level to turn it into a "light-shaft" with the circulation wrapped around it.

Bedrooms, living spaces, a kitchen and garage are also arranged around this central space. Wooden-shuttered windows, housed both in deep reveals and projecting frames, animate the home's elevations and bring natural light into the rooms. The interior continues the earthy palette of the exterior, with sand-coloured concrete pavements, whitewashed wooden beams and pine carpentry. Masonry niches and kitchen counters continue the theme of the stonework.

Sydenhurrst Manor House, Surrey

Sydenhurst Manor House is a ÂŁ12m luxury manor house built near Godalming. The ambition was to create a building with the appearance of a 200 year old manor house, naturally stone was the only solution. The buff Stoke Hall Ashlar walling was selected to give the building its heritage appearance. Bespoke masonry features for the heads, cills, jambs and mullions crafted from Stoke Hall stone finish the project perfectly. In consultation with the architect and the client, the overall stone package was value engineered reducing overall costs without compromising the grandeur of the building. Sydenhurst is situated within 30 acres or private rolling parkland on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Chiddingfold. The property comprises of 9 principal bedrooms with the ability to host extra guests in the additional accommodation in the orangery.

The principal house, built in Georgian style, is accessed through the main hallway off which are situated a substantial kitchen with family room, drawing room, dinning room, library, office and wine cellar. The first and second floors are accessed by the oval stairwell or lift off which all the bedrooms are located. The master suit includes a morning room, bedroom, dressing rooms and bathrooms. The orangery is accessed from the principal residence via the link building giving access to all aspects of the property. A double height entertainment hall houses facilities including a two lane bowling alley, snooker room and cinema. The village of Chiddingfold is quintessential in every way with a prominent and active village green surrounded a duck pond.

The decision was made to support the tracery from braced, designed scaffolding so that the mostly original 14th or 15th century tracery be retained in its original positions.. All glazing was removed to be restored by leaded light specialist glazers. The stone removal which involved supporting the tracery from braced, designed scaffolding; this allowed removing the unstable decayed mullions, jambs, and heavily spalled cill. A new Barrington Clunch stone cill was fixed into place, this gave us a stable base on which to rebuild the original medieval clunch stone mullions. The original internal mullions were re-used and pinned to the newly carved external Bathstone mullions at our works before being transported back to site. This has helped stabilise them meaning they will be preserved for many years to come. Small amounts of tracery were renewed where they were deemed structurally unstable, the remaining tracery was conserved using the latest modern techniques. The conserved tracery is now further protected with the installation of 100% new outer arch and hoodmould. Once all stonework repairs were completed the newly restored leaded light glazing was then reinstalled. Some minor conservation stone repairs were also carried out to the interior of the South East Window, where the glazing was also removed and restored and stone repointed.

Once the project commenced it soon become apparent that more work than anticipated was going to be necessary. The original mullions had undergone numerous past repairs resulting in a very unstable structure. It was decided that these be completely removed so they could be fully stabilised.

Granite technically refers to a light-coloured granulose plutonic rock composed of felspars, plagioclase, quartz (35% approx.) and minor amounts of mafic minerals (45% approx.), such as, biotite, hornblende, pyroxene, iron oxides, etc. But, in commercial parlance, the term granite has become synonymous with all those crystalline rocks which have pleasing colours, strength to bear the processes of quarrying, cutting & polishing and which are used commonly for decorative purposes. Being more resistant to wear and tear as well as weathering, granite is most sought-after stone to be used as building as well as decorative stone. The fascination for granite is due to its amenability for taking mirror-like polish, high compressive strength, longevity and aesthetics. India possesses enormous deposits of all types of dimension stones and is considered as one of the prominent producers of dimension. The Dimension Stone Industry employs a workforce of over one million at its various sectors in the country. This Industry plays a vital role in the economy of Tamil Nadu, Telengana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Rajasthan. Rural economy of many developing States like Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and North-Eastern States is dependent on this Industry. Granite Industry is valued at US$40 billion and has a potential to generate semiskilled employment, especially in rural areas.

India is endowed with abundant resources of wide variety of granite comprising over 200 shades. As per NMI data base based on UNFC system (as on 1.4.2015) reserves/resources of granite dimension stone of all types have been estimated at 46,320 million cubic metres. Of these resources, 264 million cubic metres (less than 1%) fall under Reserves category, while the remaining 46,056 million cubic metres (about 99%) fall under Remaining Resources category. Of the total granite reserves, about 36 million cubic metres fall under Proved category while 228 million cubic metres fall under Probable category.

POLICY

Statewise breakup of total resources reveals that Karnataka & Rajasthan share about 20% each of the resources which are followed by Jharkhand (19%), Gujarat (18%), Andhra Pradesh (5%) and Madhya Pradesh & Odisha (4% each). These States together account for 90% of the total resources. Gradewise classification reveals that about 7% of the total resources fall under Black granite while 92% under Coloured granite. About 1% resources are of Unclassified grade.

The granite being building stone comes under 'Minor Mineral' hence the producers report the production data directly to the respective States and not to IBM. Information from State Directorates of Mining & Geology has been tabulated. Major production of granite in raw as well as processed form is generally from Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telengana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat. Granite is a ‘Minor Mineral’ under the MMDR Act, 1957. The grant of various mineral concessions for granite is, therefore, administered under the Minor Mineral Concession Rules of the respective State Governments. However, the Granite Conservation and Development Rules, 1999 aims at uniform rules for conservation, systematic development and scientific exploitation of granite resources. WORLD SCENARIO The top five granite producing countries were China, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia and Italy. Currently, the USA is the world’s largest consumer of granite and its demand is largely fulfilled by imports from Brazil, China and India. The European Union (EU) is one of the biggest markets for the worldwide Natural Stone Industry. India has also been one of the key players in the global export of natural stones, with substantial share in global exports.

The 80,000 square foot museum includes over 30,000 square feet of gallery space, a 2,500 sq. ft. indoor sculpture court throughout a 2-story stone ‘arroyo’ whose backdrop is an indoor waterfall, a Native American jewelry collection, a 120 seat theater, a 6,000 sq. ft.

The new $75 million privately funded James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art is located in the heart of St. Petersburg’s waterfront arts district. Rather than building the museum from the ground-ﬂoor up as a freestanding

structure, the team worked with the city to redesign an existing eight-story parking garage. The ﬁrst two levels of the building are dedicated to the museum, the remaining levels will still function as the parking garage. The prominent feature in the museums spacions, 33000 sq. ft. entry hall is a two storey waterfall – 18ft high by 18ft wide, with a sloped granite face. The museum walls suggest the sandstone mesas of the south-west and are faced with teak sandstone panels from Jaipur, India.

In the fair where the total number of participants was 1078, the natural stone, which is the majority of the fair, continued to lead in terms of area covered. In the fair, which took place on an area of 150 thousand square meters, the natural stones occupying almost 70 percent of the 55 thousand square meter exhibition area were exhibited in nearly 40 thousand areas. The Turkish natural stone, which has covered processed, semi-processed and block areas, was revealed this year with its usage areas and millions of years of stories. The fair bringing together all the components of the natural stone including the stones

from nearly all mines of Turkey, scientific congress and events, union participations at the state level, local and international participants and visitors, draw an important guideline for the future of sector. The importance of the creative stories and the usage areas of natural stone was emphasized in the fair. Witnessed millions of years, exhibited in fuarizmir A first has happened in the fair.
