The yellow porcelain slab exhibits swirls in a darker shade across its surface and easily resembles the natural Onyx. When lit from the rear, the illuminated slab displays vibrant hues of gold, glowing up the adjoining space. The application ensemble creates an aura of exuberance and romance in the installed area. One of the most distinguishing features of the product is its flexibility. With a 5.5m range of flex, the slabs can be installed over concave and convex surfaces and the patterns too can be customized to suit the décor. The feature allows engraving on the slab surface to design\ curves or even combine patterns merged with other products to form beautiful backlit structures.

NATURAL STONE INDUSTRY BEYOND COVID 19

www.stonepanorama.com

According to IMF, the global economy is expected to shrink by over 3 per cent in 2020 – the steepest slowdown since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Amid the coronavirus pandemic, several countries across the world resorted to lockdowns to “flatten the curve of the infection. These lockdowns meant confining millions of citizens to their homes, shutting down businesses and ceasing almost all economic activity.

STONE PANORAMA July - September 2020

16

The deadly Covid-19 virus still fast spreading even to new pockets of the world, creating havoc with people's lives and the economies of the world. It is felt that no human habitat on earth will remain unaffected by Covid 19. It looks presumptous to even think beyond the immediate moment. But businessmen, be they in natural stone or any other industry, are always obliged to think ahead beyond the immediate circumstances, this characteristic is, in fact, one of the essences of good management. The people of eminence in natural stone industry have made an attempt to identify in what way the industry dynamics will change in a more permanent way as a result of this devastating crisis, what current trends may result having been temporary, in which aspects there remains considerable uncertainty, and what kind of challenges lie ahead. With uncertainty hovering over, as of now it is impossible to predict when the Covid 19 virus will no longer be a significant factor in our daily lives. It is obvious that some countries will be more

affected than others, and the recovery is also likely to be uneven in different regions. It is speculated that it could be a decade before the world economy recovers completely from the shock of the pandemic. The policies that different governments adopt will also be an important factor during the process of recovery. An economic blow of this magnitude will accelerate trends which were already underway, but may also create new ones. The views expressed by the experts reveal that the following two trends in the world may have influence on natural stone industry:(a) Protectionism: Post Coronavirus the world is likely to be more protectionist. The Governments in different countries are likely to be more sympathetic in those cases where the local stone industry is important and is seen to be affected in a negative way by import of stone from other countries. It is possible that some governments may impose higher import duties, or put other restrictions. (b) Government Spending & Private Investment: There will probably be higher government spending in the short term during the next 1 or 2 years as a measure to keep the economies floating. Because now fiscal discipline has been abandoned everywhere due to the emergency situation and most of the spending is focused on avoiding a complete collapse of the economy and protecting weaker segments of society. The next phase of government spending may well be

Many developing countries were already in a weak fiscal situation before the pandemic. They are likely to suffer from slow economic growth for many years. This will obviously affect in a negative way the prospects for a large number of stone companies. High income countries with relatively strong currencies have greater margin for fiscal and monetary initiatives, but even there tight budgets could keep the economies in an anemic situation. There will possibly be cancellation of many commercial projects. There will probably be a surplus of office space in many cities and also closure of shopping malls as a result of greater digitalisation of the world economy in the form of home working and home delivery of just about everything, and also weaker economies. In USA a recent report mentioned that as many as 1/4 of shopping malls may close down in the next few years. Delays in new hotel projects are also likely due to the strong slowdown in tourism.

very short period of time Zoom, Facetime, WhatsApp videos, Microsoft Teams and many more have become the favourite application of stone people. This kind of communication is expected to become normal. Webinars became very popular during the lockdown when everyone was at home as a substitute for the conventional seminars, but in a very short period, people have already started complaining of there being an excess of them and the attendance for these events is already declining sharply. While digital inspection overnight became an important industry norm in the natural stone since there was no other alternative, over the last 2 months people have also discovered its limitations. When it comes to inspecting slabs with clearly defined patterns, camera photos and videos can be a reasonable alternative. But when it comes to evaluating over images and videos the small but often important different shades, tones and the variations, then nothing can substitute a personal visit or sitting across the table with the architect or client and showing the different samples. Those who offer inspection services in stone should find more companies availing of their services. People spent even more time on social media during this period, but anyone who uses social media to sell natural stone would have already discovered this is no way business is done in stone sector. People are already fed up of seeing hundreds of slab images accompanied by contact details every day in any social media group specialized in natural stone.

New Working Norm

Consumer Pattern

For now business travel has reduced to negligible levels. This is deeply being felt by stone industry businessmen all over the world which thrives on personal relationships. No amount of video conferences completely substitute the face to face human contact. Once travelling is allowed to levels we have all been accustomed to, one can expect businessmen to initially make frequent trips just to make up for the time lost. Attendance as visitors in the traditional trade fairs is also likely to jump when they are first held once again, though it is less clear whether many stone companies, with tight resources, will be willing to exhibit in the B2B trade fairs in the way they used to before.

Sustainability and carbon footprint are an additional criteria for choosing a particular type of stone. It is unclear whether these arguments will move beyond being a sensitivity for a minority of architects, developers and other specifiers restricted geographically to north and western European countries, and sometimes in USA. In its application as a decoration material in small volumes, other criteria such as aesthetics and price may remain, as before, the dominant criteria.

Video conferences have fast become the new standard way of communicating over long distance, and this will definitely substitute some of the business travel. In a

More home working may lead to higher renovation activity in the short run as people make adaptations to separate work and home environment. General cautiousness about travelling will hit hard the economies of the tourist dependant countries for the next one or two years. But a side effect is a big jump in

www.worldstonefairs.com

focused on trying to be more productive, by investing in infrastructure, for example. If it is so, this could mean the construction industry, a big employment generator, could receive some kind of boost. But over the medium term there will probably be much less public sector spending in construction related activities due to other priorities like strengthening local health systems, reducing high debt levels, keeping the pension systems sustainable, etc. It is likely that higher royalties on mining may be imposed to increase government revenue.

NEWS home improvements as people spend more time at home and spend money on landscaping, garden furniture, kitchens, bathrooms, terraces, fireplaces, etc. In other words, greater demand for natural stone should result in applications for the home and decoration. This phenomenon is already noticeable in North and Central Europe and some parts of USA these days. "Buy local" may be not just a government slogan but an argument which will get more receptivity from developers, architects, etc. who all want to feel they are supporting the local economy and employment. This means stone companies and industry associations, especially in the medium and big sized countries, are well advised to focus seriously on developing their own local markets and not just concentrate on exports.

Industry Size

STONE PANORAMA July - September 2020

16

It is hard to avoid the conclusion that after all the steady shrinking in size of the natural stone industry that took place over the last decade, in many countries the Coronavirus crisis will probably lead to closure of additional companies in the short and medium term. Most companies have already reduced the number of employees, it is hard to judge when they will re- hire again, that will depend on the dynamism of the country's economy and many other factors. Innovation There has definitely been greater effort made by many companies in experimenting with new textures and finishes. Because of the fragmented nature of the industry and the severe limitations that currently exist, it has been hard to show the results of these efforts to clients. The tactile element of natural stone, so important to the industry, is for now, unused as an argument. It is hoped that once there is a certain normality this type of innovation will help to make natural stone attractive. Many companies all over the world are now making furniture in natural stone and incorporating design in everything they do. For now the promotion is being done in social media, but there is every reason to think that in normal conditions these companies will be making efforts to look for new customers, perhaps exhibit in different B2C trade fairs focused on interior design or home decoration or furniture. Competition Well before the crisis, the natural stone industry was under pressure from the competition of the new generation of artificial materials. This crisis has

obviously hurt these companies too, but they will not disappear. Nothing changes regarding the dynamics related to this competition. The Indian Scene New variety of stones in attractive colours are being mined and these have to be promoted for export. Unskilled labour left the factories and moved to their hometowns in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal as there were no jobs for them during lockdown. Their return is taking time and is impacting the production in factories. The cost of logistics – inland freight, services has also increased as people are still scared of COVID 19, looking at large number of infected cases detected everyday. Even actual buyers, architects are not selecting the stones unless it is very urent. However, the demand for stones for export has increased in August, 2020, which is a good sign for recovery. Banks and financial institutions are lending money in accordance with the declared guidelines to revive the industry. Cluster development is likely to become popular to reduce cost of production, increase productivity, improve quality and develop indigenous machines, tools, consumables etc. under ‘Atmanirbhar’ Scheme announced by the Government. It appears that there will not be any physical stone fair until April, 2021. The proposed virtual fairs from September, 2020 are alternative, but can not substitute the traditional fair. Conclusion Given the unexploited possibilities of natural stone, there will be possibilities for those companies willing to experiment in new stones, finishes, applications and products. There is likely to be a significant increase in home improvement in many markets in the short term providing a necessary cushion. But survival, and eventually, growth, of companies and the industry will come from constantly experimenting and developing new applications, the same challenges that existed before this crisis. Creativity and imagination have always been drivers of growth in most industries, the natural stone companies will find a ready new market with possibilities too if they apply themselves with an open and fresh approach to their business incorporating design, aesthetics, technology, ease of application, improving the quality and making their products competitive. MOVETRO, A NEW VISUAL IDENTITY WITH THE SAME TECHNOLOGICAL VALUE AS EVER

www.worldstonefairs.com

Movetro unveils a new visual identity following a rebranding project that saw the complete overhaul of the image of the brand that has led the sector dedicated to the storage and handling of flat glass sheets for over 15 years.

The graphic image is centred around a logo which has evolved from the previous incarnation, maintaining the same dynamic, central lines on a visual level; it evokes a sheet of glass, both in colour and shape. Indeed, the colour of the logo conjures both the transparency and the delicate rigidity of glass, the material par excellence to which a significant portion of Movetro's product range is dedicated. In fact, the company has established itself on the international market as a leader in the

production of classifiers, shuttle warehouses, automatic loaders, loaders and tilting machines, operating in the sector dedicated to the storage and handling of flat glass sheets. Furthermore, Movetro is now expanding its range, adding to its traditional historical product line with automatic systems for handling natural stone, quartz and ceramic slabs. As such, the colour of the new logo has been adapted, with the addition of a shade that evokes the grey of granite, the hues of quartz and the nuances of natural stone. The name of the brand, characterised by a contemporary typeface in capital letters, underlines the direct nature of the tone taken by the company which is widely known in the flat glass sheet handling sector, and is perfectly integrated with the branding and communication strategy of Biesse Group, the industrial group that Movetro has been part of since 2017. Thanks

PROPOSED GLOBAL HERITAGE RESOURCE

STONE PANORAMA July - September 2020

26

The International Commission on GeoHeritage (ICG) of IUGS has a subcommission known as the Heritage Stone Subcommission (HSS), which evaluates proposals of heritage stones from different parts of the world for designation of Global Heritage Stone Resource (GHSR), based on Terms of Reference (ToR) provided by the Subcommission. The Heritage Stone Subcommission is instrumental in bringing to fore the heritage stones of different nations used in their architectural and cultural heritage and designating them as GHSRs. The GHSR designation of stones has profound implications in geological, architectural, cultural, historical, conservation, and restoration sector Up to now, 22 natural stones from around the world, primarily based on their historical use in architectural sites of cultural significance and historical quarrying records, international usage if any, and current quarrying status of the stone etc. have been designated as Global Heritage Stone Resources (GHSRs). Each GHSR lists features like appealing texture, sustainability, versatility in use, etc. Most of the designated GHSRs find utility in contemporary times too. HSS is making a huge effort at recognizing natural stones from around the world as GHSRs based on their heritage value. To name a few, Carrara Marble from Italy, Larvikite from Norway, Portland Stone from UK, Alpedrete Granite from Spain, Maltese Lower Globigerina Limestone from Malta, Makrana Marble from India, Piedra Mar del Plata from Argentina, Jacobsville Sandstone from USA, and Petit Granit from Belgium have been designated as GHSRs. India records numerous architectural heritage built in diverse natural stones, which need to be promoted on a global platform. To date, four important natural stones from India have been proposed to be designated as GHSRs, namely, the Deccan Basalt and Trachyte, the

Vindhyan Sandstone, and the Jodhpur Sandstone. As of now, India has only one stone, i.e., the Makrana Marble from Rajasthan designated as a GHSR. The yellow-colored Jaisalmer limestone from the Desert of Western India, famous as golden stone, has been extensively used in the architectonic heritage of western India. The architectural heritage, built of this limestone, imparts an exquisite character to Jaisalmer city, which is popularly known as “The Golden City.” The Jaisalmer Fort built using Jaisalmer Limestone, locally referred to as “Sonar Qila” meaning “Golden Fort,” has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Jaisalmer is renowned for architecturally distinctive Jaisalmer Fort, Palace of Maharawal (now Fort Palace Museum), Jain and Lodurva temples, Nathmalji-ki-Haveli, Patwon ki Haveli, Salim Singh ki Haveli, and Bada Bag cenotaphs (burial monuments, locally known as chhatris) constructed using the yellow Jaisalmer Limestone. The Jaisalmer Limestone has been used as building stone in numerous monuments in Jaisalmer city and nearby places. The Jaisalmer Fort, made up of the yellow Jaisalmer Limestone, is considered as one of the glorious forts of Rajasthan The fort blends Islamic and Rajput style architecture and is one of the six forts of Rajasthan designated as “Hill Forts of Rajasthan” which are collectively recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Jaisalmer citadel has several other amazing monuments built within its premises. These include exquisitely engraved palaces, cluster of Jain temples, and houses built for the people serving the nobility. Old mansions (havelis) built in the yellow Jaisalmer Limestone of the city are worth mentioning for their intricate carvings; these mansions at one point of time belonged to affluent bankers and merchants of the city. The Patwon ki Haveli and the Salim Singh ki Haveli are thronged by tourists for their intensive carvings and motifs. The Deewan Nathmal’s Haveli is a blend of

Kuldhara, an abandoned village located at a distance of 18 km from Jaisalmer, is all rubble of buff to yellow limestone as a reminiscent of old habitats. The Lodurva temple near Jaisalmer is a typical eight-cornered temple built in the Jaisalmer Limestone. Its slanting walls resemble a pagoda style temple. The characteristic geometrical lattice works on the walls and carvings on the panels and gates add to the magnificence of the temple. The nineteenth century Amarsagar Jain Temples, also built in the Jaisalmer Limestone, are decorated by floral carvings, sculptures, latticed screens on the panels, arches, pillars, and walls of the temple and intricately carved ceilings. Apart from the local heritage buildings, the Jaisalmer Limestone was also used in the inlay work in the Agra Fort, the Taj Mahal, and the Red Fort built between the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. These are recognized as the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Another sixteenth century monument in Agra, Itimad-ud-Daulah (also known as “Baby Taj” or “Mini Taj”), is famous for its intricate pietra dura work. The Jaisalmer Limestone has been extensively used in the geometrical floor designs and inlay work on the walls of the mausoleum of

Itimad-ud-Daula. In fact, the tombs of Itimad-ud-Daula and his wife are also crafted in the Jaisalmer Limestone. The Jaisalmer Limestone is also used in the fine inlay work at the Golden Temple, Amritsar. Besides being used as a major building material, it has found profound use in inlay work done in many religious places, forts, palaces, and mausoleums built during the reign of Mughals in India from sixteenth century onwards. The Jaisalmer Limestone, also known as yellow limestone, is well exposed around Jaisalmer city. It belongs to the Jaisalmer Formation of the Jurassic age. The Jaisalmer Limestone is hard and compact with low porosity, which has been classified as oolitic to bioclastic grainstone, packstone to wackestone. The yellow limestone, which is the most sought-after variety due to its pleasing colour, texture, and aesthetics, is being quarried around the city of Jaisalmer for decades. The yellow limestone is commonly traded as “Yellow Marble.” The common use of the Jaisalmer Limestone includes floor tiles, wall claddings, counter tops, and most importantly as an ornamental stone. The Golden Jaisalmer Limestone’s wide usage in the heritage monuments in India deserves to be promoted on a global scenario. Hence there is a proposal to designate Jaisalmer Golden Limestone as the “Global Heritage Stone Resource” from India. The extensive use of the Jaisalmer Limestone in the historical past has made it to be nominated as a “Global Heritage Stone Resource.” The Jaisalmer Formation (Callovian–Oxfordian), having a thickness of 120 to 170 m, mainly consists of golden yellow-brown-coloured, coarse to fine-grained hard and compact fossiliferous limestone. The Jaisalmer Limestone comprises carbonate microfacies represented by oolitic, peloidal to bioclastic grainstone, packstone to wackestone. Fossils of mollusks, corals, foraminifera, ostracods, and echinoids are common in this formation. Non-skeletal allochems comprise pellets

Rajput and Islamic style architecture and is famous for its intricate carvings adorning the panels, pillars, and windows of the haveli. Two elephants made from single block of yellow limestone are displayed at the entrance of the haveli. The Gadisar Lake of Jaisalmer is surrounded by the Jaisalmer Limestone temples and has distinctive artistically carved chhatris (cupolas) on the peripheral part of the lake. Jaisalmer city is well known for its fifteenth century Vyas cenotaphs carved in the Jaisalmer Limestone. Bada Bag Garden, commissioned in early sixteenth century by Maharawal Jait Singh, is well known for the cenotaphs built in the Jaisalmer Limestone. Cenotaphs are engraved with figures of horses and combination of the Rajput and the Mughal architecture.

Porosities observed in this formation can be classified under five categories: (1) intergranular (due to particle shape, sorting, and secondary alterations), (2) intragranular (within the individual particles such as fossils), (3) secondary void, (4) inter-crystalline, and (5) disrupted. Cementation has reduced the porosity of the Jaisalmer Limestone. The hardness and compactness of the limestone is attributable to strong cementation, diagenesis, and high silica content. The fossils and the microfacies suggest deposition of the Jaisalmer Formation in subtidal and shallow intertidal environments. The Jaisalmer Fort is one of the earliest heritage built in the Jaisalmer Limestone. The stone is being continuously extracted from the vicinity of Jaisalmer city for building purposes. The major quarries are located at Amarsagar, Lodurva, Bada Bag, Moolsagar, Cipala, Jethwai, and Hamira. The limestone quarried in these areas has CaO less than 42% and high SiO2 content. The stones are quarried in blocks in open pit

mines. Several stone processing units have thrived over the years in the Jaisalmer area. The blocks of the Jaisalmer Limestone are cut into tiles and slabs of different shapes and sizes. It is commercially sold as “Yellow Marble after polishing. Based upon the texture, there are two locally known commercial varieties namely the Tariwala Marble and the Ita Gold Jaisalmer Marble. The Tariwala Marble is soft and can be easily carved. Thus, it is widely used in intricate carvings, sculptures, jalis (lattice work), etc. The Ita Gold shows dark brown linear patterns against the yellow background. It is commonly used for flooring and wall cladding. The monuments built during the past several centuries in and around Jaisalmer have survived on account of the stone’s durability in the dry desert region of the country. The utility of Jaisalmer Limestone in contemporary times has not decreased. The yellow limestone of Jaisalmer takes a good polish and is popular for its colour, texture, and aesthetics. The local people follow the styles of royal palaces like fine carvings, projected balconies, and decorative gates in the construction of commercial and residential buildings. It is remarkable that the present day craftsmen continue to produce the same traditional

work using the Jaisalmer Limestone. The modern resorts and residences constructed using traditional architectural designs perpetuate the rich heritage of Jaisalmer. The Jaisalmer Limestone is used for wall cladding, flooring, garden fountains, staircases, and table tops. It has been used for wall cladding in the Archeological Survey of India building, Dharohar Bhawan in New Delhi, and in the floral designs in flooring of the Sikh temples, viz., the Golden Temple, Amritsar and the Sis Ganj Sahib, Delhi. The local markets of Jaisalmer are full of countless articles made up of the Jaisalmer Limestone like bowls, cups, and saucers, jewellery, souvenirs, and artifacts. The Jaisalmer Limestone has been extensively used in modern amenities and residences. The polished slabs are used in the construction of hospitals, shopping malls, airports, residential buildings, and railway stations. The Jaisalmer Limestone has a high demand in the international market. Handicrafts, slabs, and tiles of different dimensions of Jaisalmer Limestone are exported to various countries. The United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Kuwait, Taiwan, Morocco, the USA, the UK, Iran, Panama, Poland, Belize, Spain, Colombia, Australia, Kenya, Greece, Romania, Italy, and New Zealand are prime importers of Jaisalmer Limestone.

COVID - 19

COVID 19: THE PANDEMIC

First of all, it should be noted that these diseases have animal origin, i.e. these are zoonoses, often due initially

If a virus, known and unknown, comes into contact with the human body, the consequences can be different: if the individual has an effective immune system, he does not get sick, but he does not even realize he has contracted it; otherwise, the affected person suffers damage and, if the infection is serious, he may even succumb. The healthy carrier, as well as the sick person, may have infected other individuals with whom he came into contact. Speaking of infectivity, the symbol R0 has been coined: if the symbol is accompanied by the number 2, it means that the positive subject can infect two of them, while if it is equal to or less than 1, it means that the population is safe, because the disease is dying out. From all this it is clear that the higher the number accompanying R0, the more the number of infected people increases. However, the R0 factor does not depend only on the characteristics of the infectious agent, but also on the density and mobility of people, personal hygiene and climate. Perhaps it would not hurt to recall some of the pandemics, mentioned in the chronicles, which have left an indelible mark in the memory, unfortunately often distracted, of humans, transforming their societies and even changing the course of history. Estimates on the number of deaths are made a bit with common

to the coexistence between people and farm animals and later extended to densely populated areas.

33 STONE PANORAMA July - September 2020

In the long history of humanity, pandemics of considerable importance have occurred before the one that characterized 2020. They were generated by viruses that are sometimes known, sometimes completely unknown, but always so aggressive as to cause the death of millions of people. It all began to occur when man transformed from nomad and hunter to farmer, forming communities and nuclei of people who lived in confined spaces, where contagious diseases had ample freedom to spread. The carriers of the diseases were of different species: cattle, pigs, ducks, hens, dromedaries among the animals raised and others encountered, but unwanted, such as bats, civets, fleas, mice and others. This state occurred mainly in East Asia and, in particular, in China, and this has been happening for several thousand years. Everywhere in the known world during the Middle Ages, viruses and bacteria found a very fertile ground, taking advantage of the overcrowding of the cities kept dirty, thanks to the dominant ignorance both about hygiene and cleanliness in general and personal, and the proximity to them of large intensive farming. It has been calculated, certainly with a large margin of error, that since humanity left news of itself, the microscopic killers have caused the deaths of half a billion, if not a whole billion, of individuals.

fleas. However, the deaths of about a million infected proved to be very heavy.

sense, so much so that they are certainly vague, even if indicative. Athenian Plague - It broke out between 430 and 426 BC. Greece, during the war between Athens and Sparta, in which Pericles died. May be it was typhoid. It caused the death of 70 to 100 thousand people.

Spanish flu - The infamous Spanish flu dates back to 1918 which, transmitted through pigs or birds, after having infected half a billion people, sent 50 million to death, according to some sources, or even 100 according to others, only to be exhausted in the 1920. The disease, caused by the H1N1 virus and very infectious, was facilitated in its spread all over the world among populations debilitated by hardships and hunger by the movement of armies who, after the Great War, returned home, taking with them the terrible disease and spreading it among relatives and friends.

Asian flu - In China, from 1956 to 1958, the avian flu virus spread, the origin of which was attributed to wild ducks. In less than a year, it spread all over the world, causing a million deaths.

Hong Kong flu - This pandemic appeared about ten years later in Hong Kong, due to a virus variant of the previous one. Again, one million people lost their lives.

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) - In 1981, one of the most serious pandemics appeared to man: the human immunodeficiency virus HIV, but much better known as AIDS, which causes the weakening of the immune system, putting the man at the mercy of all possible existing diseases. According to the news, the source of the disease was transmitted to a human being in 1980 in Africa by a lake chimpanzee, through a bite. Again, the absolute mortality is not known; however, it can be assumed that the deaths of 25 million people around the world are not far from reality, even if some believe that the deaths may have been no less than 36 million.

Plague Antonina - From 130 AD forward. It was deadly in Rome, perhaps imported by the legions that had fought against the Parthians. The dead were between 5 and 10 million.

www.stonepanorama.com

Justinian Plague - From 541 AD onwards, with ups and downs up to around 750. It appeared in Constantinople, a densely inhabited city, which makes it easy to get infected by a specific rat bacterium. Estimated 50 to 100 million victims.

STONE PANORAMA July - September 2020

34

Black Plague - It broke out in Asia and was spread by the Tartars along the Silk Road to reach the Middle East and from here was imported to Europe by merchants. Its period of maximum virulence is between 1346 and 1353, to reappear in waves for several tens of years. His haul was between 50 and 100 million dead Europeans. Perhaps it was the most terrible pandemic that has ever hit humanity. The cause of its onset is animal in nature: in fact, it was transmitted by rats that lived with the population and followed it when it faced journeys, taking advantage of the same means of transport, whether they were carriages or ships. Unfortunately, only five hundred years later was it was understood. Smallpox - It has been shown that the smallpox virus has haunted man since ten thousand years ago. The name refers to the pustules that appeared on the skin of those afflicted with them. The disease, very contagious, was spread in America by the European conquerors on people not strongly defended against new diseases, infecting and disfiguring the faces of the natives. In Europe, it was very dangerous, so much so that it caused the death of no less than a third of the population. This disease has been eradicated, having finally managed to produce an effective vaccine. Manzoni Plague - This plague, which lasted only two years, from 1629 to 1630, was in fact not a real pandemic, because it only affected northern Italy. It was perhaps spread by the passage of armies of lansquenets, who rested in barns and filled with rat

Now, when no one thought that something like the ones they have remembered could ever recur, the latest virus capable of causing a disproportionate number of victims appears in the Far East, and precisely in China. This is COVID 19 (acronym of Corona, Virus, Disease, 19) also called SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Coronavirus 19). In this case, while believing that the origin of the pandemic may be of an animal nature, the scientific communities have not yet been able to establish it with certainty.

COVID 19, which was officially recognized by Wuhan health in China at the end of 2019, had already made its appearance a couple of months earlier, without however recognizing the need to communicate the news to the world. The fact was serious, because she was given the opportunity for the disease to spread throughout the planet. Its rise was identified in the city market, where animals are sold: chickens, pheasants, bats, snakes, deers, rabbits and so on and so forth. In January 2020, the virus was identified with COVID-19. But there were no specific medicines and at the time of June checks were made that declared that the infected were millions, the deaths almost half a million and, fortunately, there were also many cured. How does the Coronavirus Infection Happen? Certainly, proximity to an infected person, even if he does not show it, can be enough. The infection can occur directly from person to person: in fact, if the distance between the two is less than one meter, the droplets that are expelled, when one speaks, sings, coughs, sneezes, can reach and penetrate into the mouth, nostrils, in each other's eyes. Indirectly, the pandemic can be passed on to others through objects or surfaces touched by a carrier of the virus. Therefore, in the first case it is of fundamental importance to wear a safety mask, if the spacing is not possible for contingent reasons, while in the second case, if it is not possible to do otherwise (for example, when you have to touch handrails, handles, etc.) wash your hands properly with soap and water or alcohol and do not forget to keep the surfaces clean. It has also been found that droplets often have dimensions, and therefore weights, so small that they do not settle on the ground or on various surfaces thanks to gravity, but remain suspended in the air, at the mercy of the movement of air. In fact, at the beginning of July 2020, 239 scientists from 32 countries wrote a letter to WHO (World Health Organization), which reaffirms the concept according to which in closed environments, perhaps with poor ventilation,

there is the presence of a aerosol consisting of mini droplets spread throughout the environment, so the distance of one meter is to be considered useless and the best thing to do is to ventilate them deeply. The government ordinances, however, have achieved their purpose, requiring people to remain closed at home, except in exceptional cases, and if necessary, always respect the rules, which provide for spacing and use of the mask and not skimp on the use of soap and alcohol-based substances for washing hands. In this way, with the closure of all types of activities and gatherings, the number of infections was gradually decreasing. At that time there was a widespread display of signs with the words GOING ALL GOOD! by confident people. Yes, everything will be fine for those who have not been infected, for those who, despite having been sick, are cured, for those who have not had any deaths in the family. But the others, those who were not included among these, were furious, because nothing went well for them, not only that, but many, many, too many perhaps, they could not even bring their last farewell to their relative condemned to death . In some cases, the bodies were transported to other cities to be cremated, because in the area of residence the funeral directors were in despair, no longer having the possibility to cremate them there or to bury them, due to the lack of crematorium ovens or cemetery land. So, quietly and rightly, those optimistic signs disappeared. The general closure of all activities, however, had its fruits: in fact, the infections decreased, as did the deaths, while the healed increased. This new situation raised the ambitions of those who could no longer stand being forced to do what others wanted. And there were the first, new infections, but it has been seen that, while previously those affected by the pandemic were elderly people, often with previous diseases, in the new phase there was an average decrease in age, often reaching below 50 years. What does all this mean? It means that elderly people or people with other diseases, who were saved thanks to their correct behavior, have managed to stay away from COVID-19, while many of the less elderly or young have felt strong, invincible, stainless, immortal, unfortunately showing for them the uncovered side of the disease, becoming positive, with the consequences related to the new state.

www.worldstonefairs.com

Every time a pandemic appears, human history undergoes changes that lead to the outbreak of wars, the beginning of migrations, the transformation of regimes, abrupt changes in economic systems, rethinking of religious beliefs, ideological changes. In short, pandemics become the arbiter of human life and never benevolent.

COVID - 19 Honestly, looking around, without stopping at one's own country, but also looking a little at the homes of others, one must realize that it did not end here, unfortunately. There are many who, despite being accused by birds of ill omen, believe that there will probably be a phase 2, with unimaginable consequences, but this not so much because today's corona virus is worse than the previous ones, but because the populations do not consider it appropriate to sacrifice themselves further. Here, then, what is happening: very dense gatherings of people who have no mask, but who are at a distance not only less than a meter, but less than a yard or two feet. Ultimately, it should always be remembered that prevention is what guarantees that every activity is carried out safely. Surely, I do not consider it acceptable, and that I am not the only one, that I risk catching the disease, perhaps leaving the skin, the cause of an ignorant and presumptuous young man, who wanted to behave as he saw fit, caring highly of others. Now, the health professionals are working hard to be able to prepare a specific vaccine and it seems that they are on the right path if not, there is nothing to do but wait for the COVID 19 to decide, independently to leave where it came from , waiting to make its reappearance in the future. The world will never be the same; how it will be, no one knows, but it will never be the same again. Stone Industry Affected

STONE PANORAMA July - September 2020

The covid 19 was deadly for all human activities, except for those who worked in health care (production of masks, tampons, gloves, medicines for pneumonia, etc.). Mining has also suffered greatly. Italy, which is was one of the most mistrate, and suffered the serious consequences. Second the common opinion is very much due to the indiscipline of many Italians, who do not respect neither the use of masks, nor the maintenance of social distances, Despite the solicitations from scientists, virologists and other specialists. For mining activities of ornamental stones, perhaps, with much attention, you could avoid completely closing the cultivation, in how, being usually wide spaces, you could maintain the insulation among the operators. This is a personal opinion. Anyway I think that the heartfelt appeal made by the President of the Confederation of Confederations Governor of Tuscany is more than explicit about the

22 future of quarries marble and other natural stones. Here: CARRARA Marble businesses can safely reopen, but If we don't leave immediately, we're going to lose a lot of businesses and a lot of jobs. Erich Lucchetti's appeal, president Confindustria Massa Carrara, to Enrico Rossi, president of the Tuscany region: Dear President, as you yourself have pointed out in the recent meeting with representatives of Tuscan companies our economic fabric is running a serious risk of desertification as a result economic consequences of the Covid 19 emergency. The Institute regional economic planning in Tuscany has calculated that we are losing as a Tuscan economy a huge amount every week: from 800 million to 1 billion. It is clear that if this hemorrhage does not block the Our region's gross domestic product will suffer a collapse that is unlikely to can be recovered. Especially because it will be difficult to compensate for the supposed contraction of the demand with a speculative expansion of foreign demand. Not only that because other economies are also in a regressive phase as this emergency health care knows no borders, but mostly because it's our export who's taking the hardest hits. In fact, while our most export-oriented companies are firm, companies exporters from other countries have not experienced any pause. The emptiness our export is leaving is so filled day by day by our foreign competitors. The excavating and processing sector of marble and its induced work mainly with abroad. And right now not only do we obviously be able to win new customers and new markets, but we're also losing the ones we had. For days now, our companies are receiving messages from foreign customers. Everyone there are warning that continuing our absence will be forced to other companies from other countries. This means that later we will start again the longer the distance with these foreign companies will be wide and unbridgeable with obvious impact on both production and employment levels. This is especially true for the stone industry in general and marble in particular. And it is especially true for a reality like Massa Carrara that, as know, you have much higher growth and employment difficulties compared to the rest of Tuscany. For marble, for Massa Carrara this forced block of production has a much higher price than elsewhere. The Research Institute of the Chamber of

companies in our province will have employment and stone companies in particular will see their jobs fall by almost half of both turnover and jobs. It is a risk that must be averted and that is why we ask for a helping hand to start again. Marble companies are able to implement a model of activity for the extraction and processing of stone materials allows the resumption of processing by following all the procedures that protect risk of contagion. The principle remains that the first place is always the safety and health of those who work and citizens, and therefore in full compliance with the rules dictated by the Government and Region on the indications of the scientists and in the total and timely application of security protocols agreed between companies and trade unions, we ask you to evaluate for our companies the possibility of a reopening even non-total from the days immediately following the Easter holidays." The President of The Industrialists of Massa Carrara Erich Lucchetti.

These waste are inert and of no use in the existing form. Several Govt. initiatives have been taken for effective utilization of stone wastes for various applications. These efforts are limited only at academic level. CSIR- Central Building Research Institute Roorkee has accepted the herculean task of utilization of stone waste for making building products at commercial scale. Dr. (Mrs.) Rajni Lakhani, Head Organic Building Materials Group and her team under the leadership of Dr. N. MARMOMAC LAUNCHES THE "RE-START 2020" PROJECT

STONE PANORAMA July - September 2020

The recovery of the natural stone sector starts off from Marmomac. The landmark international event for the natural stone industry conďŹ rms its 2020 appointment at VeronaďŹ ere 30 September-3 October. In support of a supply chain which in Italy boasts 3000 companies and turnover worth 2.6 billion euros (of which 1.8 millions from exports), the exhibition in Verona launches its "Marmomac Re- Start 2020" project This special edition seeks to relaunch the natural stone

sector towards a "new normal" in the post COVID-19 emergency period. The world of marble, granite, processing technologies and design was severely tested by the lockdown, coming in the wake of 2019 results themselves already highlighting a downturn, posting -ti% for exports of processed products made in Italy. Consequently, the aim of "Marmomac Re-start 2020" is to provide exhibitors and specialized visitors with an exhibition

Thanks to targeted incoming activities in collaboration with the international network of the ICE- Italian Trade Agency, the intention is to aVract operators and buyers from all over the world to the trade fair in Verona in October: a target that should be reached starting from its European core, today virtually assured, followed - as borders are progressively re-opened - with the involvement many other countries and full internationality. And to ensure connection with non-EU markets that may still be unable to aVend because of restrictions, Marmomac is also developing innovative tools to make virtual b2b meetings possible. “Through Marmomac Re-Start," explained Giovanni Mantovani, CEO Veronafiere, "we aim to assure the most important natural stone community in the world that we have promoted for the last 55 years a 2020

edition in total safety hallmarked by resumption that we can share with clients, exhibitors and operators in response to the challenge that the sector is called upon to tackle. The Verona-system and, more generally, the country-system as such thereby seeks to ensure that the recovery for the stone industry starts o% from Italy, where Veronafiere organizes the leading sector event." As regards the layout of the exhibition, certain aspects are confirmed and others are new. “The Italian Stone Theatre” returns as the event narrating the interaction between natural stone, projects by major international architecture studios and innovative processing technologies developed in Italy. On the other hand, there is a change to the layout of the show, with entrance through the new Re Teodorico Gate, the use of Halls 6, 9, 10, 11 and 12, and outside areas B, D and Avenue E. This logistics solution was also studied in accordance with the #safebusiness safety protocol developed together with other major national trade fair operators.
