Welcome from Karla Rothan

5

Welcome from Brian Shinn

It is with great excitement that I write to you about a subject that is very dear to me, Stonewall Columbus Pride. I began volunteering for Stonewall Columbus when I moved to this city in 1994. In 1998 my life partner, Linda Schuler, and I were asked to join the Pride Committee as the Chairs of the Parade. That year, the March and Festival combined had approximately 15,000 people in attendance. It is hard to believe that it was sixteen years ago that we began working on the team that produces this amazing event. Now in 2014, Stonewall will most likely host 300,000 people and touch the lives of countless others who believe in and hope for fairness and equality for all.

City Citations & Resolutions

This year’s Pride theme is “Created Equal.” The logo is the rainbow flag torn apart in the outline of our state symbolizing that we are far from treated equally in Ohio and it is time for change. We will honor actor and social justice activist, George Takei as our Grand Marshal. He will participate in the parade, address the crowd from the stage at the festival and receive his award at the Pride Brunch on Sunday, June 22 from 11-1 at the Columbus Athenaeum.

Be Safe, Be Neighborly

Our Pride committee, board and staff consists of 45 of the most highly professional and skilled individuals that I have ever met. Each of them brings a unique skill set to their area of responsibility and they work hundreds of hours to produce Pride 2014. They and another 500 volunteers make this event a success and do so with a mix of grace, precision and humor. Thank you VOLUNTEERS! We could not do it without you. I want to encourage all of you to come out, bring your families, volunteer, have fun and raise money for a good cause. Stonewall Columbus serves the Central Ohio LGBT community by providing a community center and offering programming and services that enhance the well-being and visibility of our diverse community through discovery, affirmation and celebration. Dollars raised at the annual Pride Celebration go right back in to the community center to support individuals and families all year long. Happy Pride, Columbus!

Did you Know Pride Costs over $280,000 to Produce? We request a $5 donation at the entrance for each day you attend. A limited number of dog tags and wristbands will be available to those who donate at the entrance.

On behalf of the Stonewall Columbus Board of Trustees, it is my honor to welcome you to Stonewall Columbus Pride 2014. Each year our Pride Festival grows, and we are grateful that you will be among the over 300,000 people who will join us for our thirtysecond year of recognizing the vibrant and diverse LGBT Community in Columbus and Central Ohio. Whether you are participating for the first time or for the thirty-second time, we offer many activities during the weekend of June 20 – June 22 for all ages and interests, including the Pride Festival, the Pride Parade, and the Pride Brunch. Please see our website for more information at columbuspride.org. We are very excited that we will be joined this year by George Takei as our Grand Marshal for the Pride Parade on Saturday, June 21 and for the Pride Brunch on Sunday, June 22. George has been an outspoken activist for LGBT equality and for social justice, and he is one of the most clever and witty social commentators of our time. With all of the recent gains in Federal recognition of LGBT relationships as well as favorable rulings by the Federal courts in numerous cases concerning marriage, this year’s theme “Created Equal” is especially appropriate. Although there is much more work to be done to achieve true equality in Ohio and in the U.S., public opinion and history are on our side. Pride is our opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate our victories and to support the work of Stonewall Columbus. Every dollar raised from the Pride Festival assists us in providing programming and services to the Central Ohio LGBT Community as well as maintaining our community center, The Center on High. Please support Stonewall Columbus by purchasing a Dog Tag or Wristband, donating at the festival gates, donating to the Spirit Team along the parade route, and by donating online at columbuspride.org/donate. We could not have a successful Pride without months of planning and the extraordinary efforts of our dedicated staff, Pride Committee, and volunteers. I want to thank them for their hard work behind the scenes that allows everyone to have an enjoyable and memorable Pride weekend. I also want to thank our members and sustaining donors whose contributions to Stonewall Columbus help us to carry out our mission throughout the year. Please visit stonewallcolumbus.org for more information about supporting Stonewall Columbus. In closing, I wish you a happy, fun, healthy, and safe Pride 2014!

GAY MARRIAGE – THE FIGHT FOR RECOGNITION Federal judge Judge Timothy Black called Ohio's gay marriage ban both unconstitutional and unenforceable. In the ruling, Black wrote that the record

"before the Court … is staggeringly devoid of any legitimate justification for the State’s ongoing arbitrary discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and, therefore, Ohio’s marriage recognition bans are facially unconstitutional and unenforceable under any circumstances." The ruling does not force Ohio to allow same-sex marriages to be performed in the state.

OH MYYY! GEORGE TAKEI Photo Credit: Adam Bouska

Our Pride Grand Marshal “We are honored to have George Takei join us for this year’s Pride Celebration,” says Karla Rothan, Executive Director of Stonewall Columbus. “As an artist and activist, George’s compelling story syncs with our theme, Created Equal. George has worked tirelessly on behalf of our rights and we honor him in June for his lifetime of activism. Join us and George as we march to end discrimination and fight to eliminate hate.” Grand Marshal, George Takei will lead the Pride Parade on Saturday, June 21, 2014, stepping off at 11am (an hour earlier than previous parades) in downtown Columbus. Mr. Takei will also be accepting his award as the Grand Marshal at the Pride Brunch on Sunday, June 22, 2014, 11am-1pm at the Columbus Athenaeum. Limited tickets are available and reservations are required. Tickets will not be available at the door.

Actor, social justice activist, social media mega-power, author of Lions and Tigers and Bears: The Internet Strikes Back and Oh Myyy! There Goes the Internet, and star of upcoming Broadway musical Allegiance. With a career spanning five decades, George Takei is known for his role in the acclaimed TV series Star Trek, in which he played Hikaru Sulu. Takei starred in three seasons of Star Trek and reprised his role in six movies. Mashable.com in 2012 reported Takei is the #1 most-influential person on Facebook, with more than 6.3 million likes. Takei has more than one million followers on Twitter. His book, Oh Myyy! There Goes the Internet, ranked #10 on the New York Times E-book nonfiction list. Takei’s Take, produced by AARP, is a new YouTube series where Takei explores the world of technology, trends, current events and pop culture.

To Be Takei, a Jennifer M. Kroot documentary, premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2014 and will have a theatrical release later in 2014. Takei and Tony Award winner Lea Salonga developed Allegiance – A New American Musical. The musical is an epic story of love, family and heroism during the Japanese American internment. Takei has brought his acting abilities to TV and film, and voiceover talent to hundreds of characters during his prolific career. He has also provided narration on TV, award-winning radio, and audiobook projects. He is an accomplished author having written Oh Myyy! There Goes the Internet; Lions and Tigers and Bears: The Internet Strikes Back; co-written the sciencefiction novel Mirror Friend, Mirror Foe with Robert Asprin; and published his autobiography, To the Stars in 1994. Takei, a Japanese American who from age 4 to 8 was unjustly

interned in two U.S. internment camps during World War II, is an outspoken supporter of human right issues and community activist. Takei is chairman emeritus and a trustee of the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles. The openly gay Takei has served as the spokesperson for the Human Rights Campaign Coming Out Project, and was cultural affairs chairman of the Japanese American Citizens League. He was appointed to the Japan-U.S. Friendship Commission by former President Clinton. The government of Japan awarded Takei the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, for his contribution to U.S. – Japanese relations which was conferred by His Majesty, Emperor Akihito, at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. In 2007, Asteroid 7307 Takei, located between Mars and Jupiter, was named in his honor. Takei currently lives in Los Angeles with his husband Brad Takei. They were married at the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, on Sept. 14, 2008.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Name: The Fabulous Johnson Brothers First Year Performing: 2007 Bio written by the Fabulous lead singer, Aaron Favorite volunteer memory? In 2012 we had the opportunity of closing out the Pride stage, performing “Proud Mary” and “These Boots are Made for Walking” with the Cap City Pride Marching Band. It was fun to put together something unique and special for the audience to walk away with. It was also really awesome to collaborate with so many incredible musicians. What does the theme of “Created Equal” mean to you? Well, obviously my band and I are a mixed bag of nuts. Everyone’s input is equal and valued for the unique perspective that it brings. This defines what we are about. We are all welcome to the party and can coexist and create cool things together. We have a blast doing it, love sharing it with others and wouldn’t have it any other way. Catch The Fabulous Johnson Brothers on the Shelterhouse Stage on Saturday at 4:30. They will also be performing at 11pm on Saturday, June 21st at Park Street Patio (directly across from the park) for a special Pride Music Night.

Names: Lisa Odierna, Autumn Odierna, Julie Kleski First Year: Lisa & Autumn since 2002, Julie joined the fun in 2007 Prior Roles: From 2002 at the old collection gates, last 4 years with the Spirit Team (Lisa helped create the first Spirit Team). Current Roles: Spirit Team Chair and PIT Roles Bio written by Autumn Odierna. Why do you volunteer? I volunteer because it has been a passion my entire life, I care, and I want to inspire change. My role model (my mother) has always helped with Pride so I followed in her footsteps, at the same time making my own journey! Favorite volunteer experience? When I was 17 in 2005, I spoke on the main stage and was introduced by Susan Powter. I was quoted in the Dispatch. I thought it was very cool! What does the theme of “Created Equal” mean to you? ‘Created Equal,’ I believe, as a community, means we are standing together and no longer asking—we are demanding —equal rights for all people.” I am so passionate about being a leader for change for my generation. My family is the most loving, accepting, and safe unit and we deserve as much as anyone else. We have to inspire change and courage to stand up for equality.

Favorite volunteer memory? The large decrease in protesters at 2013’s Pride Parade was great. Hopefully that trend continues as it allowed us to help out Linda in other ways with the logistics that she and the rest of the Pride Committee deal with on that day. Name: The Grizzlies (team in the CLGSA) First Year Volunteered: 2012 Role: Volunteer Security

46 | 2014 Pride Guide

What does created equal mean to you? It’s a validating phrase for LGBT people. But it’s also a reminder that there still a disconnect between the first sentence of this country’s constitution and our everyday

lives as a group of people that do not get equal treatment by our government strictly due to our sexuality. Hopefully one day created equal will also mean equal treatment. The Grizzlies will be setting up a friendly tent on the Russell path if you want to go over and learn more about their team. More info about LGBT sports leagues in Columbus, such as the CLGSA, and many others, will be available at the Stonewall tent.

BECOME A VOLUNTEER

Name: Tessa Petrocco First Year: 2011 Volunteer History: 2011-12 SWC Office and Pride. 2013 Pride PIT (Pride In Training) Crew. Current Role: Festival Layout Committee Why do you volunteer? Not only is volunteering for Pride one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done, it is also SO much fun! Between the excitement of the festival and constantly on-your-toes insanity of volunteering in a higher position, it’s the ultimate adrenaline rush! On a personal level, I volunteer because I have a lot of friends and family in the LGBT community, which has always been so loving and warm to me, so it’s my way of showing my support and saying “Thanks” for accepting me into their family. Favorite volunteer experience? It’s hard to pinpoint just ONE memory, but I have to say working alongside fellow volunteers is always a lot of fun. I have a reputation for being a bit of a comedian, and last year was no exception...only I had access to a golf cart, which led to a lot of really funny (but safe!) scenarios and silliness from yours truly. What does “Created Equal” mean to you? To me, the phrase “created equal” means two things: that all people, regardless of race, age, sexual orientation or gender 1) deserve the same rights as others that are protected under law. For the LGBT community, that means anything from the right to marry and to employment and housing protection to being allowed to give blood and creating accommodations to transgender people, and 2) need to treat each other with love, kindness and respect. In the end, we are all the same and desire the same thing: to live as the person she or he truly is without the fear of doing so. I am a proud ally, and will continue to be one long after equality is reached.

Every year, volunteers like you help to make Pride the best weekend in Columbus! Take a couple hours out of celebrating this weekend and give back to the community by picking up a volunteer shift. Shifts are just a few hours, and your time goes a long way in making Pride so spectacular. Sign up at columbuspride.org/volunteer and help us make a difference this Pride weekend.

Volunteer Tent This tent serves as a haven not only for volunteers just before their shifts, but after their shifts and during breaks as well. Sit in the shade and enjoy complimentary food, soda and water. This check-in point is conveniently located at the southeast portion of the park, near the corner of Park and Goodale. The Volunteer Tent also houses a gender-neutral changing area, available for volunteers as well as park patrons who need a safe and secure changing environment.

THE MURALIST Adam Crum Live Art, in the Park! Watch and enjoy as local LGBT artist, Adam Crum, creates a work of art during the festival. Adam will be painting his mural along the pathway between the Pride Patio and the Shelterhouse Stage. Once he is finished, the completed work will be auctioned off at the Pride Brunch with proceeds benefiting Stonewall Columbus. Adam obtained his BFA from Columbus College of Art and Design. He has shown his portraiture locally and nationally. He is also the creator and founder of the Charliesheenzine, a local publication of kitsch comics. Adam was one of the members of the infamous Columbus art crew “Couchfire Collective and has painted murals all over Columbus, including Polaris Fashion Place Mall, Lucky 13 Hair Salon, and several in the Franklinton Arts District. Adam would like to thank Jim Sweeney and Franklinton Development Association/ Urban Scrawl for making this mural possible. Also, he lays it down on the dance floor. For real.

Columbus Urban Pride was started in 2012 by a small group of local community leaders to plan events that celebrate LGBTQ people of color during the annual Stonewall Columbus Pride Festival & Parade.

Now in its third year, Columbus Urban Pride has promoted nearly 50 events and touched the lives of nearly 20,000 LGBTQ people of color in Central Ohio. At the intersection of race and sexuality/gender identity lies a host of complexities. Columbus Urban Pride offers a space where the complexities of one’s identity are fully celebrated. This year CUP brings a list of events that will make you think, make you dance and may even make you sing. CUP will kick off the Pride weekend with our annual Pride KickOff Happy Hour, host two community conversations on important issues affecting queer communities of color, and the annual Film Screening + Panel Discussion series returns featuring “Gun Hill Road,” and this is just a snapshot. Be sure to check out the full schedule of 2014 events geared towards queer people of color (QPOC) and their allies. But why a Columbus Urban Pride? Why is celebrating diversity important? Members of the CUP Planning Committee offer insight…

58 | 2014 Pride Guide

“Columbus Urban Pride is important to me because it provides a space where LGBT people of color can celebrate their unique stories within the larger Pride celebration. There are times when these experiences can feel isolating; having a network of individuals and groups to offer support is truly amazing.” –Terrence Brooks “The intersection of being a person of color and an OUT member of the LGBT community can be challenging. Often, we feel invisible. Columbus Urban Pride gives us visibility. It gives us representation.” –Troy Harris “Columbus Urban Pride helps expose the faces, cultures and celebrations of Columbus nonmajority LGBTQ communities, of which Black gay persons are significant contributors. Personally, it is important that I perpetuate the spirituality of Black gay people—a spirituality that has helped sustain us, and a spirituality that has sustained The Church.” –Rahmundo Imani

“The importance of visibility and representation cannot be overstated. People are searching for an affirming reflection of themselves; Columbus Urban Pride provides the space for that reflection to become a reality.” –Erin Upchurch “Urban Pride is important because it’s an opportunity for LGBTQ people of color to celebrate being both a person of color AND being gay. Often LGBTQ people of color feel overlooked by the LGBTQ community, and shunned by our communities of color. Urban Pride allows us to be completely both without fear of rejection.” –James Blackmon “Columbus Urban Pride is important to me because the seeds that we’re planting within our community today will serve as sustenance for those who come after, and hopefully will lead to less suffering and pain.” –Aaron Thomas “CUP is important to me because it broadens the space and face of what LGBT Pride is. It’s an inclusive celebration that brings our community from the margins to the center.” –Judy Alston
