A Letter from the Executive Director to the Community It is with great excitement that I write to you about a subject that is very dear to me, Stonewall Columbus Pride. I began volunteering for Stonewall Columbus when I moved to this city in 1994. In 1998 my life partner, Linda Schuler, and I were asked to join the Pride Committee as the Chairs of the Parade. That year, the March and Festival combined had approximately 15,000 people in attendance. It is hard to believe that it was seventeen years ago that we began working on the team that produces this amazing event. Now in 2015, Stonewall will most likely host 400,000 people and touch the lives of countless others who believe in and hope for fairness and equality for all. At our festival and parade, we honor all of those who are fighting for equality, especially Jim Obergefell from Cincinnati, Ohio. Jim will lead the 2015 Columbus Pride Parade as our Grand Marshal on Saturday, June 20th. Jim and his late husband, John Arthur, are at the forefront of our fight for national marriage equality. As a married couple, it was their struggle to get Jim’s name as a ‘surviving spouse’ on John’s death certificate that catapulted marriage equality straight to the Supreme Court. The Obergefell v. Hodges arguments began on April 28th, 2015. The theme for this year’s Pride celebration is “Be the Change.” We could not think of any other person who better exemplifies this timely message more than Jim Obergefell. Stonewall Columbus will also honor members of our local LGBTQ community who have made a difference in the lives of others by being the change they would like to see in the world. Our Pride committee, board and staff consists of 45 of the most highly skilled and professional individuals that I have ever met. Each of them brings a unique skill set to their area of responsibility and they work hundreds of hours to produce Pride 2015. They and another 600 volunteers make this event a success and do so with a mix of grace, precision and humor. Thank you VOLUNTEERS! We could not do it without you. I want to encourage all of you to come out, bring your families, volunteer, have fun and raise money for a good cause. Stonewall Columbus serves the Central Ohio LGBTQ community by providing a community center and offering programming and services that enhance the well-being and visibility of our diverse community through discovery, affirmation and celebration. Dollars raised at the annual Pride Celebration go right back in to the community center to support individuals and families all year long. Happy Pride, Columbus!

Did you Know Pride Costs over $360,000 to Produce? We request a $5 donation at the entrance for each day you attend. A limited number of dog tags and wristbands will be available to those who donate at the entrance.

On behalf of the Stonewall Columbus Board of Trustees, it is my great honor to welcome you to Stonewall Columbus Pride 2015. Each year our Pride Festival grows, and we are grateful that you will be among the approximately 400,000 people who will join us to celebrate the vibrant and diverse LGBTQ Community in Columbus and Central Ohio. We offer many activities during the weekend of June 19 – June 21 for all ages and interests, including the Pride Festival, the Pride Parade, and the Pride Brunch. Please see our website for more information at columbuspride.org. This year, our theme is “Be the Change,” and it is very exciting that we are on the cusp of what we hope is a historic change in the U.S. as we await the ruling of the United States Supreme Court on marriage equality. Few people could have predicted how rapidly the right to marry has expanded and how quickly public opinion has moved in our favor. Therefore, it is very fitting that we will be joined this year by Jim Obergefell as our Grand Marshal for the Pride Parade on Saturday, June 20th and for the Pride Brunch on Sunday, June 21st. Jim and his late husband John Arthur exemplify being “the change” through their struggle against the State of Ohio to have their marriage recognized and for Jim to be named as “surviving spouse” on John’s death certificate. Jim is the lead plaintiff in one of the Ohio cases being decided by the Supreme Court, and he has the tremendous honor of having the historic ruling in Obergefell v. Hodges bear his name. Like the famous decisions in Brown v. Board of Education and Loving v. Virginia, his case will be studied by future generations as a benchmark in civil rights for our nation. Pride is our opportunity to come together as a community to celebrate our victories and to support the work of Stonewall Columbus. Every dollar raised from the Pride Festival assists us in providing programming and services to the Central Ohio LGBTQ Community as well as maintaining our community center, The Center on High. Please support Stonewall Columbus by purchasing a Dog Tag or Wristband, donating at the festival gates, donating to the Spirit Team along the parade route, and by donating online at columbuspride.org/donate. We could not have a successful Pride without months of planning and the extraordinary efforts of our dedicated staff, tireless Pride Committee, and generous volunteers. I want to thank them for their hard work behind the scenes that allows everyone to have an enjoyable and memorable Pride weekend. I also want to thank our members and sustaining donors whose contributions to Stonewall Columbus help us to carry out our mission throughout the year. Please visit stonewallcolumbus.org for more information about supporting Stonewall Columbus. In closing, I wish you a happy, fun, healthy, and safe Pride 2015!

In February 2015 we began looking into wedding planning. As very visual people, photo & video were at the top of our priorities. But quickly our excitement turned to sadness when a photographer refused us services because we’re two women in Love. We were shocked. We were humiliated, angry, heart broken. We took it up with the chamber of commerce. They sided with the bigoted business & refused further communication with us. Stifled & Outraged, we took our story to the streets. Quickly it went viralcnn, local news, magazines, etc... suddenly our quiet heartache became a global outcry. The letters of love & support for our mission for change came pouring in. 2015 Be the Change Honorees Skylar Hansen Skylar was born on September 27, 1999 to a 16 year old mother that was unable to parent him. He was given the name Samantha Jean as his gender assigned at birth was female. His adoptive family started calling him “Sky Blue” because of his eyes. When he was adopted his name was formally changed to Skylar Samantha. He is very proud to announce that his name will be changed one more time. This time he will finally and officially become Skylar Samuel Hansen and his name will finally match the gender of which he identifies. Skylar started expressing his unacceptance of his assigned female gender around the age of three. On his third birthday, his birthday wish was to be a boy. He became increasingly unhappy with female clothing, toys and hair styles. His first sentences consisted of “no bands, no bows” when his hair was being brushed for preschool. He started verbally expressing his wish to be a boy more often and more forcefully as time went by. Once when his preschool bus driver gave him a doll as a Christmas gift, Skylar promptly threw it out of the bus window. The boys got trucks from the same driver! There are many of these stories to tell. Fortunately, Skylar had a great pediatrician that recognized and acknowledged that there was a problem early on. He did bloodwork and ultrasounds to make sure there wasn’t a medical problem and then explained that Skylar was most likely Transgender. With the onset of puberty, came more intense issues and depression. The pediatrician referred Skylar to the Transition Clinic at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and Skylar began his transition. With hormone therapy and a new level of acceptance, Skylar has been allowed to be who he is! He will enter his sophomore year at Granville High School in the fall. Skylar would like to begin playing men’s sports after surgery this summer and plans to be a firefighter after high school.

Kim Jacobs In 2012, after 33 years of service in the Columbus Police Department, Kim Jacobs was promoted to Police Chief... the first woman in Columbus history to receive the honored position. Since then, through the practice of “community-based policing”, Police Chief Jacobs has been instrumental in reaching out into minority communities to create collaboration, understanding and accountability. In 2013, she and the CPD partnered with CCAD to create a public service video about bullying to be posted to the “It Gets Better” website to help guide the community in finding a way to combat the problem in our schools and neighborhoods. Furthermore, she instituted “listening sessions” within Columbus communities for her and her police force to engage with citizens directly and hear their concerns firsthand. In 2014, Chief Jacob established “Community Liaison” positions within the CPD for the African American , New Citizen and LGBTQ communities. We are honoring Chief Jacobs as we believe she has done much to “Be the Change” here in Columbus by giving us a voice in how we are protected and served by our Columbus Police Department and truly embracing the notion of tolerance, fairness and civic cooperation.

JIM OBERGEFELL Our Pride Grand Marshal “We all deserve the rights, responsibilities, and respect that come with marriage, and I’m honored to be part of this fight for equality and to help celebrate how far we’ve come!” Photo Credit: Kevin Wolf/AP/HRC

Jim Obergefell was born and raised in Sandusky, Ohio, and he earned a degree in Secondary Education and German from the University of Cincinnati. While in graduate school for College Student Personnel at Bowling Green State University in 1992, Jim fell in love with John Arthur. In 2011, John was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a fatal neurological disease with no cure. Shortly after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down part of the Defense of Marriage Act with the Windsor decision in June 2013, John and Jim married in a medical jet on the Tarmac of Baltimore Washington International Airport. John and Jim decided to file suit in federal court against the State of Ohio to demand recognition of their lawful marriage on John’s death certificate at the time he died. This was the first marriage equality suit filed after the Windsor ruling, and U.S. District Judge Timothy Black issued a temporary injunction in their favor, the first ruling in favor of marriage equality after Windsor. 34 | 2015 PRIDE GUIDE

John died in October 2013, and his death certificate accurately reflects his marital status and lists Jim as John’s surviving spouse. When Judge Black made the injunction permanent in December 2013, the State of Ohio appealed to the Sixth District Court of Appeals. In November 2014, the Sixth District Court of Appeals ruled against John and Jim, as well as the plaintiffs from five other cases in Ohio, Kentucky, Michigan, and Tennessee, setting the stage for an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. The U.S. Supreme Court consolidated all six cases into one, known as Obergefell v. Hodges, and heard oral arguments on April 28, 2015. A decision is expected on the case in June 2015. In March 2015 Jim was named by the Ohio Democratic Party as the first recipient of the newly created Obergefell-Arthur Progressive Hero Award. Jim will be a guest at the 50th Anniversary LGBT Civil Rights Movement celebration in Philadelphia on July 4, 2015, during which he will be presented with the Frank Kameny Award from the LGBT Bar Association.

Jim has spoken, or will speak, at many institutions or organizations including Ohio University, ACLU, Cleveland Stonewall Democrats, Cincinnati Enquirer Storytellers, Isaac M. Wise Temple (Cincinnati), and the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Real Estate Professionals. Jim was the commencement speaker at the University of Guam and a speaker in the University’s Presidential Lecture Series. Jim speaks at Human Right Campaign (HRC) events across the country. Jim considers himself an accidental activist, someone who never planned to be actively involved with any particular issue but instead became a passionate activist due to unforeseen circumstances. In addition to his marriage equality and civil rights advocacy, Jim has been an active participant in/member of the ALS Association’s Walk to Defeat ALS, the Cincinnati Preservation Association, the Cincinnati Area Board of Realtors Fair Housing and Diversity committee, and The Gallery Project.

2015 PRIDE GUIDE | 43

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT THE BOYKIN FAMILY Members: Jimmy, Janie, Sabrina and Jimmy Jr. How long have you been participating in PRIDE: Janie has been participating in Pride events around the country since 2000. She started volunteering with Columbus Pride in 2009, became a part of our PIT crew and is now a Committee Member. Sabrina has volunteered with us for four years now with the last two being part of our PIT crew. Jimmy and Jimmy Jr. have been volunteering with us for the last three years. Why they feel it is important to volunteer: “As allies of the gay community, it is extremely important to make sure we show our support however we can. Providing education, awareness and acceptance of others is what an ally can and should do. Being a volunteer with Columbus Stonewall, it gives us an avenue to engage with the broader community so we are able to provide education, teach awareness and demonstrate acceptance of the gay community.” “Be the Change” Message: “For our family, the message “Be the Change” means just that. We all need to be the change, to be the pioneers of this community by putting a face on what an ally should be. We need to demonstrate a stronger role and show our support by standing next to each individual as an equal and demand change. Because inevitably, “Change” is coming.”

AMBER DUPREE First year volunteering: 2010 What you typically volunteer to do: Set up Layout Crew and General volunteering Why do you volunteer/what do you get out of volunteering: What started out as a way to scope out the Columbus LGBTQA community as a young queer, volunteering over the years for Pride has become an important part of keeping involved with the wonderful community I found. Best volunteer memory/moment: I think it was my first year volunteering and I didn’t know anyone, but another person and I ended up with the task of constructing theses cardboard trashcans we used 44 | 2015 PRIDE GUIDE

GINA BURNSIDE I have volunteered for Stonewall since I was thirteen and most of those years have been spent on the Spirit team. The Spirit Team kicks off the parade, pumps up the crowd, and asks for donations to help support Stonewall. Every year you can expect to see us in our bright shirts and excitedly screaming “FIVE FOR PRIDE!” I continue to volunteer because for one it’s a blast and now it has become a friend and family tradition. I have so many volunteer moments that stick out, like the time someone handed me a $100.00 donation for a bracelet and said “keep the change”, or the year I had every single member on my team show up and kept their commitment for a good cause on that oh so early Saturday morning. Pride is a day I look forward to every year that is full of love and equality. Volunteering has helped remember to be proud of myself and proud of my community.

to have. There were at least a hundred of them. By the end of the night of much laughter, we had found ourselves completely surrounded by these maniacal things. It was like Night of the Living Dead. How has volunteering helped you “Be the change” (this year’s theme) in your life or the lives of the community: I was only 16 when I started volunteering and the community I found really helped me grow up in a welcoming environment. It gave me the confidence and validation that I can make a difference, regardless of age.

S P OT LI G H T

LIAM GALLAGHER First year volunteering: 2013 What’s your title at Stonewall: Volunteer Coordinator Why do you volunteer/what do you get out of volunteering: I love seeing all the smiling faces and hearing everyone shout “Happy Pride!” throughout the weekend, especially getting to meet and talk with so many different people! I remember how impactful my first Pride was, and want to make it the best event possible for someone else who is experiencing Pride for the first time this year. Best volunteer memory/moment: After the festival was over and we had packed up the Volunteer Tent, two of my stellar volunteers, Amber Dupree and John Findlay, were there until the last box was unpacked at the Center. We were totally exhausted from the weekend, but they were still willing to stay by my side to see it through until then end. We would not have been able to put on the festival without all of our hard working volunteers, and am so appreciative of everyone who helps make Pride such an incredible event! How has volunteering helped you “Be the change” (this year’s theme) in your life or the lives of the community: Volunteering makes me feel connected to the community, and it is because of volunteering at Pride that I became involved at Stonewall and with the LGBTQ community in Columbus. After graduating, I really had no idea how I could get involved, but volunteering has made me so much more aware of the wide range of challenges our community faces, and has reinvigorated me to take action to “Be the Change” I want to see in the world.

very year, volunteers like you E help to make Pride the best weekend in Columbus! Take a couple hours out of celebrating this weekend and give back to the community by picking up a volunteer shift. Shifts are just a few hours, and your time goes a long way in making Pride so spectacular. Sign up at columbuspride.org/volunteer and help us make a difference this Pride weekend.

Volunteer Tent This tent serves as a haven not only for volunteers just before their shifts, but after their shifts and during breaks as well. Sit in the shade and enjoy complimentary food and water. This check-in point is conveniently located at the southeast portion of the park, near the corner of Park and Goodale. The Volunteer Tent also houses a gender-neutral changing area, available for volunteers as well as park patrons who need a safe and secure changing environment.

NEW FOR PRIDE 2015 PRIDE TESTING PAVILION Stonewall Columbus is Proud to host the Pride Testing Pavilion at the Pride Festival on Saturday from 12pm-6pm. This pavilion offers private, easy one-stop access to HIV and STI testing. See the Pride Festival map for location. AIDS Resource Center Ohio will offer free rapid HIV testing. We use the OraQuick ELISA test that looks for antibodies to the virus that would be present in the oral fluids 3-6 months after infection (this will be explained during the process). Results take 20 minutes and this testing can be done completely anonymously or confidentially. Columbus Public Health will offer free gonorrhea/chlamydia and syphilis testing. All results take 5-7 business days and clients will only be informed by phone if they test positive. These tests are processed by Columbus Public Health labs and if a client tests positive, they can receive treatment at CPH (240 Parsons Ave) or with their own doctor. Gonorrhea/chlamydia testing is done through a urine sample and syphilis testing is a blood draw. All STI testing is confidential because if a client tests positive, CPH will need testing participants contact information and be able to verify their identity for results.

Grab a Bag. Pitch In. Show Your PRIDE!

“TAKE PRIDE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD!” HUMAN FOOSBALL Friday 6-9pm Team Tournament Saturday 12-6pm Free Play If you’ve ever played foosball, you can probably imagine a life-size version, right? Well…Minus the backflips! In this game, players stand in front of moveable poles and maneuver the ball through the ‘field’ to the goal. A team tournament will be held Friday evening during the Festival and Saturday will be open to the public for free play.

This year, Columbus Pride is proud to announce this new community initiative. The Pride Festival and The Pride Parade generate an enormous amount of trash each year and although Stonewall Columbus spends thousands of dollars to make sure that is collected efficiently and quickly, the sheer number of participants can make that difficult during peak hours. On Saturday, in order to assist in the cleanup efforts, Pride Volunteers will be handing out brightly colored trash bags (a rainbow... if you will) at the parade line-up area, on the parade route and at the festival grounds. We are asking participants and attendees to use those bags to pick up any trash they see in their area and then deposit the bag beside any nearby trash receptacle. This is just one more way for you to show your PRIDE to our neighbors, our businesses and our city! We need your help! So...Please grab a bag and help us succeed with this new community effort. 2015 PRIDE GUIDE | 55

Tag Your Bag Tag Your Tot We are asking parade participants and festival attendees to externally TAG YOUR BAG in an effort to lessen the number of lost or unattended belongings and to keep the Festival safe. Bag identification tags will be available at information booths at both Goodale Park entrances at the Festival, the Stonewall Tent, and also available to parade participants at parade check-in. Make sure the tag is visible on the outside of your bag. These tags will help ensure that if you forget your bag, it will be returned safely and swiftly to you. If you see an unattended bag, please notify the closest volunteer or security officer.

In an effort to keep our children safe, tags will be available to parents to indicate emergency contacts. Please note all emergency contacts and meeting spots on identification tags. Identification tags will be available at information booths at both Goodale Park entrances at the Festival, the Stonewall Tent, and also available to parade participants at parade check-in. Make sure the tag is secured around your child’s wrist or placed in a visible location on their clothing. These labels will help ensure the swift return of your child should you become separated.
