A Letter from the Executive Director to the Community It is with great excitement that I write to you about a subject that is very dear to me, Stonewall Columbus Pride. I began volunteering for Stonewall Columbus when I moved to this city in 1994. In 1998 my fiancĂŠ, Linda Schuler, and I were asked to join the Pride Committee as the Chairs of the Parade. That year, the Parade and Festival combined had approximately 15,000 people in attendance. It is hard to believe that it was eighteen years ago that we began working on the team that produces this amazing event. Now in 2016, Stonewall will most likely host 450,000 people and touch the lives of countless others who believe in and hope for fairness and equality for all. In recent months, the wind has been in our face with regards to transgender equality. Every single day it seems there is news that another state is trying to legislate discrimination. We will not stand for it and we are encouraging everyone to come out and march with us in solidarity. This year we honor retired Columbus firefighter and transgender activist, Captain Lana Moore. Lana will lead the 2016 Columbus Pride Parade as our Grand Marshal on Saturday, June 18th accompanied by members of her firefighter family and transgender youth. Our Pride committee, board and staff consists of 42 of the most highly skilled and professional individuals that I have ever met. Each of them brings a unique skill set to their area of responsibility and they work hundreds of hours to produce Pride 2016. They and another 500 volunteers make this event a success and do so with a mix of grace, precision and humor. Thank you VOLUNTEERS! We could not do it without you. I want to encourage all of you to come out, bring your families, volunteer, have fun and raise money for a good cause. Stonewall Columbus serves the Central Ohio LGBTQ community by providing a community center and offering programming and services that enhance the well-being and visibility of our diverse community through discovery, affirmation and celebration. Dollars raised at the annual Pride Celebration go right back into the community center to support individuals and families all year long.

Did you Know Pride Costs over $360,000 to Produce? We request a $5 donation at the entrance for each day you attend. A limited number of dog tags and wristbands will be available to those who donate at the entrance.

On behalf of the Stonewall Board of Trustees, I would like to welcome you to Stonewall Columbus Pride 2016 and Columbus, Ohio! We are excited to have you here to celebrate with us. Each year have welcomed over 400,000 people to our city to celebrate, and we know that number continues to increase. This year is even more special for us, as we are celebrating our 35th Pride in Columbus! 35 years of celebrating being true to ourselves and the community that has become home to many. There is much to enjoy this weekend, and much to be celebrated. We offer a truly family inclusive weekend and welcome all community members and allies to join in on the celebration. Our events range from the Jaeger Run to the Pride Parade, the Pride Festival to the Pride Brunch, and many things in between. Please see our website, columbuspride.org, for a full list of activities. We host these events to help us celebrate the amazing LGBTQ community here in Columbus, and in Ohio. Columbus is a city that is home to a vibrant LGBTQ community, and that supports us every step of the way in our journey to full and equal rights and being able to live openly, and honestly, as our true selves. It is hard to believe, but this is the 35th Pride here in Columbus. We have come a long way, have made many strides, and had many victories for our community along the way. One of the people that have helped with fighting for our community is our Grand Marshal, Lana Moore. Lana was a firefighter with 35 years of service here in Columbus. That in itself is bravery at its finest, and should be celebrated with our deepest gratitude. Lana retired earlier this year, in 2008 Lana came out as transgender and transitioned on the job. After her transition, Lana traveled the country speaking on behalf of the transgender community and leading the fight for transgender rights, and against violence in the community. She currently serves as Vice Chair of the Executive Board of Directors for GLAAD. Our community is proud to have Lana as a member, and we are honored that she agreed to be our Grand Marshal this year. Pride wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of our sponsors and the tireless hours worked by our volunteers and Stonewall staff. All of their hard work has been spent on making this a truly remarkable weekend. If you see volunteers walking around this weekend, please take a chance to thank them for making this weekend a success. I would also like to personally thank them for all they do. Thanks volunteers! While Pride is a celebration of, and for our community, it also serves as the largest fundraiser for Stonewall Columbus. Stonewall is the local community organization that plans and implements Pride every year, as well as continuing the ever evolving work towards LGBTQ rights, activism, and outreach programming in central Ohio. We welcome everyone to join Stonewall as a member and encourage you to seek out the Stonewall tent while at the festival to join! Your donations and support allow us to continue our programming and outreach that are vital to our community. Thank you in advance for your support. As we look back on the year since the 2015 Pride we have so much to be thankful for, and proud of. Marriage equality is now the law of the land and the national discussion on LGBTQ rights continues to progress. We also now all have the ability to adopt in all 50 states, and I would be remiss if I did not take the chance to celebrate the new addition that Kyle and I welcomed to our family in March. Our little girl, Regan, came into our lives on March 18th and has been the most amazing addition to our family. She makes me proud to be one of her two dads and proud to celebrate the amazing steps we have made as a community to ensure that we have the same rights to a family as our straight counterparts. I’m sure that the individuals who were marching 35 years ago would be in awe of where we have come since then. Thank you again for coming to Stonewall Columbus Pride 2016. Now go show your pride! And as a new father, I have to tell you to go make good decisions too!

LANA MOORE Our Pride Grand Marshal "As an emergency first responder, I have spent my life serving the diverse citizenry of Columbus. I know first-hand the importance of inclusion within our community. The Columbus Stonewall Center on High provides safe space where everyone can experience not only a sense of belonging, but receive a variety of life saving services."

Lana Moore, a third-generation firefighter, EMT-B with the Columbus Division of Fire retired earlier this year with 35 years of service. She participated from 1982-2002 on the Division Honor Guard marching and firing squad, and as an Honor Guard Commander for which she received the Fire Distinguished Service Award. Captain Moore has served for the past 16 years on the Division Awards Committee Review Board. In 2008 Captain Moore came out as openly transgender and transitioned on the job. October 2011, she received the Fire Service Award of Merit for work she did in 2009 on a special project as Project Manager on the development and implementation of an inventory tracking system for the Quartermaster.

38 | 2016 PRIDE GUIDE

In 2011, Lana served as Moderator (Chairperson) of her Church Board of Trustees and also the Senior Pastoral Committee at North Congregational United Church of Christ. The first trans person to hold those positions. Lana has traveled throughout Ohio sharing her story and speaking on transgender issues within the LGBTQI movement in Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Dayton. Lana has also presented trans workshops in Boston, Atlanta, and Denver. Last October, Lana worked closely with Stonewall Columbus to bring GLAAD and the Columbus Division of Fire together for an Anti-Bullying Public Service announcement and to turn the Short North & City Hall purple, raising awareness for Spirit Day.

Currently, Ms. Moore is a member of Columbus’ Roundtable of Local LGBT Leaders. She is a Vice Chair on the Executive Board of Directors for GLAAD (an international media advocacy organization) and she volunteers locally for Franklin County’s “CATCH Court” as a mentor for women who are survivors of human trafficking. Lana is the parent of two grown children, ages 21 and 24, and resides in Westerville, OH. We are thrilled to celebrate Captain Lana Moore’s advocacy and honor her as the 2016 Columbus Pride Grand Marshal.

A TRIBUTE TO HOPE FAITH "HOPE" HINDRICHS It was with great sadness and heartfelt sorrow that we heard of the passing our good friend, Hope Hindrichs. Faith/Hope Hindrichs, age 69, slipped away peacefully October 1, 2015 in Columbus, Ohio. Her adopted parents Frank and Ruth Hagedorn, mother Ruth Tetzloff, sisters Felicite Wise and Freda Buyer, and brother William Johnson preceded her in death. She is survived by her sisters, Lillian (Nancy) DeCola and Julie (Wayne) Allen; and brothers, Russell Tetzloff, James (Clau-dette) Johnson and Jack (Clara) Johnson; as well as numerous very beloved nieces and nephews and special friends. As President of the Rainbow Sisters of Central Ohio and a long-time member of the Pride Committee and as the Dispatch and Communications Coordinator, she was such an integral part of Columbus Pride, the very anchor that held us all together in the chaos. And even through many illnesses, she still always showed up every year to help pull us through… no matter her own personal pain and difficulties. She devoted years of living, promoting and celebrating Pride in Columbus, as well as in Long Beach, Santa Monica and Los Angeles, CA. Her compassion for those around her, her selflessness in giving, and her constant fight against injustice has changed our world for the better. By the bravery demonstrated in her own life's journey, she gave hope to countless individuals in the LGBTQ community that one day everyone could live their life truthfully and fearlessly. "Thank you for being the best grandma and role model a girl can have. I love and miss you dearly." -Samantha Heller

In Hope's own words...(from the 2013 Pride Guide) First year as a Volunteer: In Columbus 2008, but I have been volunteering for Pride festivals for over 30 years. Current Pride Job: Communications/Dispatcher How has Pride changed your life? Pride has allowed me to accept me as me and to be proud of the path my life has taken. Why do you volunteer? Through the years, the LGBT community has opened many doors, but there are a great many more doors to be opened. I believe I can help to open those doors by sharing what I have learned about activism with those who will carry the torch in the future. I have learned one of best ways to reach out to those who carry “our” banner was through Pride.

We are beyond grateful for her tireless dedication and commitment to our entire Cbus LGBT community. But not only that, most of all, she was our friend and her Stonewall Columbus family will miss her deeply and sincerely. For sure, Columbus Pride will never be the same without her. She is irreplaceable. Those shoes are just too big. Thank you, Hope… we will never forget you. 48 | 2016 PRIDE GUIDE

BECOME A VOLUNTEER

S P OT LI G H T

SHANE McCLELLAND First year at Stonewall Columbus: 2015 What’s your title at Stonewall: Development Associate Describe what you do at Stonewall: I am responsible for raising funds for the many programs and services provided at Stonewall throughout the year. I also help plan and organize the Stonewall Columbus Queer Ghosthunters investigations. Best Pride memory/moment: In 2012, my law partner Elizabeth Well and I marched in the Parade. As we approached the Short North, we saw High Street flooded with thousands of people celebrating our community. It was an overwhelming feeling and I will never forget it! What does the 35th Anniversary of Pride in Columbus mean to you? I think it is important to remember the history of the LGBTQ movement in general, as well as the history of Stonewall Columbus. 35 years ago we were protesting the arrival of Jerry Fallwell in Columbus and now we live in one of the most open and inclusive cities in the world.

very year, volunteers help to E make PRIDE the best weekend in Columbus! Take a couple hours out of celebrating this weekend and give back to the community by picking up a volunteer shift. Shifts are just a few hours, and your time goes a long way in making PRIDE so spectacular. Sign up at columbuspride.org/volunteer and help us make a difference this PRIDE weekend. We can't do it without the help of our hard-working volunteers!

VOLUNTEER TENT This tent serves as a haven not only for volunteers just before their shifts, but after their shifts and during breaks as well. Registered volunteers are able to sit in the shade and enjoy complimentary food and water. This check-in point is conveniently located at the southeast portion of the park, near the corner of Park and Goodale. The Volunteer Tent also houses a gender-neutral changing area, available for volunteers as well as park patrons who need a safe and secure changing environment.

HOW TO GIVE BACK More than 117,000 commuters drive through downtown Columbus every day and more than 44.3 million visitors come to Columbus on an annual basis. The “Downtown Banner Program”, administered under the auspices of “Experience Columbus,” allows local organizations to promote their annual events via banners that are hung throughout the city which bring attention to these organizations in a highly visible manner. This urban banner program celebrates the diversity of the city while promoting community spirit. In the late 90’s, Stonewall Columbus participated in this program, with fifteen bold, bright banners lining the streets of Columbus, promoting and celebrating our annual Pride Festival and Parade during the month of June. In 2011, Stonewall Columbus donor, Malcolm Riggle, generously gifted us the funds to cover the costs for creating and hanging fifteen new banners, consequently allowing us to fly a total of thirty Pride banners along High Street in the downtown area during our Thirtieth Anniversary Pride Festival. This was a compelling and historic statement for our community and served to visibly remind all the residents of Columbus, that we, as LGBTQ citizens, are a vital component in making this city dynamic, productive, authentic and so welcoming to its visitors. In 2012, Malcolm led the fundraising effort and we were able to fly 60 banners for Pride. In 2013, we hung a total of 100 banners. In 2014 and 2015, we presented a total of 125 banners throughout downtown Columbus! This year, with the help of our generous donors we have hung a total of 135 banners - A NEW RECORD!!! We don’t want to stop there. Help us to increase the number of our banners again in 2017, even more importantly, extend our participation to other times of the year to promote other important Central Ohio LGBTQ events. We believe it is very important for our LGBTQ community to be more prominently acknowledged all year round. After all… we aren’t just LGBTQ in June!

TESTING PAVILION PRIDE TESTING PAVILION Stonewall Columbus is Proud to host the Pride Testing Pavilion at the Pride Festival on Saturday from 12pm-6pm. This pavilion offers private, easy one-stop access to HIV and STI testing. See the Pride Festival map for location. Equitas Health will offer free rapid HIV testing. We use the OraQuick ELISA test that looks for antibodies to the virus that would be present in the oral fluids 3-6 months after infection (this will be explained during the process). Results take 20 minutes and this testing can be done completely anonymously or confidentially. Columbus Public Health will offer free gonorrhea/chlamydia and syphilis testing. All results take 5-7 business days and clients will only be informed by phone if they test positive. These tests are processed by Columbus Public Health labs and if a client tests positive, they can receive treatment at CPH (240 Parsons Ave) or with their own doctor. Gonorrhea/ chlamydia testing is done through a urine sample and syphilis testing is a blood draw. All STI testing is confidential because if a client tests positive, CPH will need testing participants contact information and be able to verify their identity for results. Also, Columbus Public Health's Strategic Nursing Team will be offering blood pressure and blood glucose (sugar) screenings and Columbus Public Health Alcohol and Drug Program will be providing free rapid Hepatitis C testing with a finger stick. The results take 20 minutes and the testing is confidential.

The Pride Festival and Parade generate an enormous amount of trash each year and although Stonewall Columbus spends thousands of dollars to make sure that trash is collected efficiently and quickly, the sheer number of participants can make that difficult during peak hours. On Saturday, in order to assist in the cleanup efforts, Pride Volunteers will be handing out brightly colored trash bags (a rainbow... if you will) at the parade line-up area, on the parade route and at the festival grounds. We are asking participants and attendees to use those bags to pick up any trash they see in their area and then deposit the bag beside any nearby trash receptacle. This is just one more way for you to show your PRIDE to our neighbors, our businesses and our city! We need your help! So...Please grab a bag and help us succeed with this new community effort. 2016 PRIDE GUIDE | 59
