A Letter from the Executive Director to the Community As I am writing this letter to the community, Stonewall Columbus is about to embark on an incredible journey to renovate and restore the Center on High at the corner of 4th and High Streets in the Short North Arts District. For the last two years, a steering committee, board and staff have worked countless hours raising dollars to expand our center and now it is time to launch the community phase at Columbus Pride 2017! I am so very proud to be your Executive Director. Every single day, I wake up and I am so excited about the future of this organization and the endless possibilities that await us.

Stonewall Columbus worked on defining its purpose this year with a generous gift from Story Forge. Story Forge helps ambitious businesses grow by discovering their purpose, forging their story and aligning every touchpoint and expression with it. With the help of community members, board, and staff and under the leadership of Tom Grote, Kathy Crowe, Stephen Snyder-Hill, Craig Ryan Turner and Siobhan BoydNelson, Stonewall was able to redefine its mission and expand its vision. Stonewall Columbus exists to uplift the LGBTQ community so that all of us thrive.

As we kick off the 36th annual Pride Parade/March and Festival, I can’t help but think of all those early activists that risked their jobs and families to start this organization and to give us a platform on which to stand to make change in Columbus. I am in awe of their sacrifice and grateful for their brave hearts. I can’t help but think about our refugees, our 2017 Pride honorees, who risked everything and fled to the United States to escape torture and death.
52 Fun for Families & Teens
Over 20 years ago, I began working with Stonewall as a volunteer who just wanted to make a difference by giving my time and organizational skills to this wonderful event. Over the years, we have had challenges. Last year was the most difficult Pride to date just a week after the Pulse Nightclub/Orlando massacre. Safety, Safety, Safety was all I could think about last year and this year is no different. I want all of you to have a safe and happy Pride. If you are marching for yourself, great! If you are marching for others who can’t because they fear losing their families or their jobs, well then that is even better. The world has changed so much since 1981 and fortunately, our pride spirit remains untouched and stronger than ever.

On behalf of the Stonewall Columbus Board of Trustees, I would like to welcome you to the 2017 Columbus Pride Parade and Festival! If this is your first-time visiting Columbus, we are sure you will find the city as inclusive and welcoming as we do. And if this is home, thank you for making Columbus the great city that it is.
Did you Know Pride Costs over $385,000 to Produce? We request a $5 donation at the entrance for each day you attend. A limited number of dog tags and wristbands will be available to those who donate at the entrance.
We couldn’t be happier to be bringing Pride back down to the riverfront this year, right where it all began. Making the move from Goodale Park has allowed us to increase the number of vendors, sponsors, and guests that we can accommodate at this celebration. You will find that the festival is much easier to navigate in the new location, and allows the entire community to enjoy the festivities. While we know that it is a departure from the recent Prides, we are confident that the changes will make it an even better event for our community and the city of Columbus. This brings us back to the city center and an easy walk from many of the neighborhoods of the city. When looking to pick a grand marshal for the parade, we contemplated many choices, but decided to honor a group of individuals as opposed to a single person. That group of people are the LGBTQ refugees that call Columbus home. They have given up much to be in a place that welcomes them for who they inherently are, and have made significant journeys to be with us in Columbus. For many it is not an easy task to march in the parade, and we cheer their courage in doing so. Take a moment if you get the chance to talk with these individuals and learn from the experiences they have had, and the journeys they have led. We are honored that they have chosen Columbus as their new home and welcome them with open arms. As many of you have already heard, or have seen in recent days, Stonewall Columbus has embarked upon a capital campaign to raise the funds so that we can build a new Stonewall Columbus Center to meet our growing needs and programming. The building will be a meeting place for the community, and a refuge to those who seek guidance and help. We can’t complete the campaign without your help, and I urge you to donate if you have not already. Be a part of this momentous journey for our organization, and community, so that you can leave a mark on LGBTQ history in Columbus. Pride not only serves as a celebration of the LGBTQ community, but also is the largest fundraiser for Stonewall Columbus each year. Money raised from this event goes directly back to the community and funds our programming and initiatives. You can also show your continued support for Stonewall Columbus by becoming a member of the organization (you might even notice that there is a member’s area at Pride itself with free food and beverages!). Pride itself is an event that takes countless hours of work from our staff and volunteers. I would like to thank them for all the work they have done, and hope you will do the same when you see any of the volunteers around this weekend. Happy Pride!!

CENTRAL OHIO BUSINESS & RESOURCE DIRECTORY FOR THE LGBTQ COMMUNITY
PICK UP YOUR COPY OF THE BOOK AT THE PRIDE STONEWALL TENT & VISIT US ONLINE @ LAVENDERLISTINGS.COM Dear Stonewall Columbus and friends, When some of us saw Stonewall Columbus’s new requirement that parade entrants with employees have an LGBTQ non-discrimination policy, we mused about what this might mean for us United Methodists – a denomination whose book of law declares that “homosexuality is incompatible with Christian teaching,” bars clergy from being “self-avowed, practicing homosexuals” and from conducting same-sex marriages, and cannot guarantee to protect LGBTQ clergy, who serve as the “administrative officer” of each church they serve. But, we know the community needs to see us in the parade, marching for justice and love! And we will, as always. I am deeply grateful that Stonewall worked with us to come up with a solution that would honor our organizations and our community. Stonewall understands what we know: many of us in The UMC are working every day not only to “make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world” (the UMC’s mission), but also to change this unjust system of ours. We believe that as with issues such as slavery and barring women’s ordination, eventually this sin of persecuting LGBTQ people will be behind us and we will be transformed. Marching in Pride parades across the country are good for our movement; so, thank you for providing us the opportunity to do this in Columbus each year! The United Methodists you have always seen marching in the parade are part of a ‘resistance movement’ inside the church; we do not represent or condone the harmful and discriminatory anti-LGBTQ policies in place. Various groups work on LGBTQ inclusion. Congregations that have taken an official step to make it clear that they not only welcome but celebrate LGBTQ individuals in the life of the Church often choose to become members of the Reconciling Ministries Network, a non-official United Methodist group that “mobilizes United Methodists of all sexual orientations and gender identities to transform our Church and world into the full expression of Christ’s inclusive love.” Summit on 16th just celebrated our tenth year as a ‘reconciling’ congregation and there are many other reconciling UMCs in Central Ohio; you may find others here: https://www.rmnetwork.org/newrmn/find-a-reconciling-community/. This year, all the United Methodist churches will be marching as individual congregations and friends together as part of the United Methodist West Ohio Reconciling Ministries Network. Our congregations welcome you! We are so happy to have hosted the Pride Worship Service at Summit on 16th UMC again this year. Thank you for inspiring us to participate in “Pride Month” in Columbus this way, and thank you for inviting us to share a word from a faith community that fully includes the LGBTQ community. Please join us at Summit on 16th on Sundays at 10:30 – or at another reconciling congregation near you -- to worship the God who created every one of us lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, asexual, and straight -- and everyone else! With love, Rev. Laura Young Pastor, Summit on 16th UMC 2017 PRIDE GUIDE | 33
REFUGEE A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, violence or natural disaster. A refugee has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group. Most likely, they cannot return home or are afraid to do so. War and ethnic, tribal and religious violence are leading causes of refugees fleeing their countries. ASYLUM The protection granted by a nation to someone who has left their native country as a political refugee. An “asylum seeker must demonstrate that his or her fear of persecution in his or her home country is wellfounded. 34 | 2017 PRIDE GUIDE
INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSON (IDP) An internally displaced person is a person who has been forced to flee his or her home for the same reason as a refugee, but remains in his or her own country and has not crossed an international border. Unlike refugees, IDPs are not protected by international law or eligible to receive many types of aid.
STATELESS PERSON A stateless person is someone who is not a citizen of any country. Citizenship is the legal bond between a government and an individual, and allows for certain political, economic, social and other rights of the individual, as well as the responsibilities of both government and citizen. A person can become stateless due to a variety of reasons.
OUR COMMUNITY HONOREES
This year, in lieu of a Pride Grand Marshal, we recognize a group of brave individuals as our Community Honorees: LGBTQ refugees who have fled their homelands because of persecution, imprisonment and/ or threat of death and now call Columbus home.
IMMIGRANT A person who comes to live permanently in a foreign country. NATURALIZATION The admittance of a foreigner to the citizenship of a country. GREEN CARD (In the US) a permit allowing a foreign national to live and work permanently in the US.
David and Roscoe, two gay Ugandan refugees were charged with “promotion of homosexuality” and fled their country after facing life imprisonment and a death penalty. Two Iranian lesbians narrowly escaped their country after being discovered and were forced to leave following death threats. One of the women is unable to show her face to this day for fear of retaliation against her or her family back home. An Iraqi couple also fled draconian anti-LGBTQ state policies to the safety of Columbus. There are many more stories just like this and today’s political climate threatens Columbus’ ability to provide refuge. It was this urgency that prompted our decision to honor our refugees and spread awareness of their struggles. (Please note, some refugees’ names have been omitted for their safety). In partnership with Community Refugee and Immigration Services (CRIS), Stonewall has worked diligently to support LGBTQ new Americans. After landing in Columbus with few or no resources,
Stonewall assists LGBTQ refugees through our Emergency Relief Fund to help with temporary living expenses until they get settled. In addition, Columbus LGBTQ refugees asked us for assistance in sharing their stories with our community and the world at large. “Love Will Win: From Uganda to Columbus” is the result of that collaboration. This a formal presentation created and shared by two gay Ugandan refugees that tells the story of their remarkable journey to Columbus in the hopes of finding safety, compassion and acceptance. Thirty-six years ago this June, three young gay activists staged a civil rights march through the streets of Columbus to draw attention to the discrimination that was happening in our city. We honor their legacy and expand it as we take to the streets once again this year. In the state of Ohio, our community can still be denied or evicted from housing or fired from our jobs just because of our sexual orientation or gender identity, so it is important for us to stand up and let our voices be heard. We stand ever firmly behind our LGBTQ community and all of our LGBTQ communities across the world and demand inclusion, full enfranchisement and equality before the law. For ALL of us. Be Strong. Stay Proud.

SCOTT SCHOPPER First year with Stonewall Columbus Pride: Attend: 2000 Volunteer: 2002 Committee: 2009 What’s your title: Festival Coordinator Describe what you do at Columbus Pride: Organize and layout everything. If I did my job well, you will see food, drinks, stages, places to relax, and interesting vendors all around. Basically, I try to make everything convenient for festival goers. Attendees should not worry about finding what they are looking for or deal with huge lines. I try to balance everything around the park and make you want to explore all of our festival grounds. Best Pride memory/moment: Pre-Goodale: seeing protesters using the hood of my car to make their picket signs. It's a "best" moment now, because as we return, I am not worried about that situation happening again at all. During-Goodale: I built every layout at Goodale and was excited to try and bring something new to the park (ferris wheel, testing pavilion, wedding cake inflatable, relaxation stations, pride patio, etc) every year. I got to watch our festival grow from taking just a small corner of the park, to overflowing the location due to all the amazing community support. What does the return of Pride to downtown Columbus mean to you? A chance to make this truly the Pride of Columbus and let me bring new fun adventures to our Pride Festivals in the future.
very year, volunteers help to E make PRIDE the best weekend in Columbus! Take a couple hours out of celebrating this weekend and give back to the community by picking up a volunteer shift. Shifts are just a few hours, and your time goes a long way in making PRIDE so spectacular. Sign up at columbuspride.org/volunteer and help us make a difference this PRIDE weekend. We can't do it without the help of our hard-working volunteers!
VOLUNTEER TENT This tent serves as a haven not only for volunteers just before their shifts, but after their shifts and during breaks as well. Registered volunteers are able to sit in the shade and enjoy complimentary food and water. This check-in point is conveniently located, near the corner of Washington Boulevard and Main Street. The Volunteer Tent also houses a gender-neutral changing area, available for volunteers as well as park patrons who need a safe and secure changing environment. SPONSORED BY:

HOW TO GIVE BACK More than 117,000 commuters drive through downtown Columbus every day and more than 44.3 million visitors come to Columbus on an annual basis. The “Downtown Banner Program”, administered under the auspices of “Experience Columbus,” allows local organizations to promote their annual events via banners that are hung throughout the city which bring attention to these organizations in a highly visible manner. This urban banner program celebrates the diversity of the city while promoting community spirit. In the late 90’s, Stonewall Columbus participated in this program, with fifteen bold, bright banners lining the streets of Columbus, promoting and celebrating our annual Pride Festival and Parade during the month of June. In 2011, Stonewall Columbus donor, Malcolm Riggle, generously gifted us the funds to cover the costs for creating and hanging fifteen new banners, consequently allowing us to fly a total of thirty Pride banners along High Street in the downtown area during our Thirtieth Anniversary Pride Festival. This was a compelling and historic statement for our community and served to visibly remind all the residents of Columbus, that we, as LGBTQ citizens, are a vital component in making this city dynamic, productive, authentic and so welcoming to its visitors. In 2012, Malcolm led the fundraising effort and we were able to fly 60 banners for Pride. In 2013, we hung a total of 100 banners. In 2014 and 2015, we presented a total of 125 banners. In 2016 we hit a new record with 135 banners lining the streets of downtown Columbus! We don’t want to stop there. Help us to increase the number of our banners again this year and, even more importantly, extend our participation to other times of the year to promote other important Central Ohio LGBTQ events. We believe it is very important for our LGBTQ community to be more prominently acknowledged all year round. After all… we aren’t just LGBTQ in June! We need your help! In 2017, our goal is to line the downtown streets with 200 banners! Please contribute to our Stonewall Columbus “PRIDE Banner Project” and help us reach our $25,000 goal. Let’s make 2017 a “BANNER” year for our LGBTQ community and our continued visible presence in our beloved city and let our flags fly… proudly all year.

TESTING PAVILION PRIDE HEALTH SCREENING PAVILION Stonewall Columbus is Proud to host the Pride Health Screening Pavilion at the Pride Festival on Saturday from 12PM-6PM. This pavilion offers private, easy one-stop access to HIV and STI testing. See the Pride Festival map for location. Equitas Health will offer free rapid HIV testing. We use the OraQuick ELISA test that looks for antibodies to the virus that would be present in the oral fluids 3-6 months after infection (this will be explained during the process). Results take 20 minutes and this testing can be done completely anonymously or confidentially. Columbus Public Health will offer free gonorrhea/chlamydia and syphilis testing. All results take 5-7 business days and clients will only be informed by phone if they test positive. These tests are processed by Columbus Public Health labs and if a client tests positive, they can receive treatment at CPH (240 Parsons Ave) or with their own doctor. Gonorrhea/chlamydia testing is done through a urine sample and syphilis testing is a blood draw. All STI testing is confidential because if a client tests positive, CPH will need testing participants contact information and be able to verify their identity for results. Also, Columbus Public Health's Strategic Nursing Team will be offering blood pressure and blood glucose (sugar) screenings and Columbus Public Health Alcohol and Drug Program will be providing free rapid Hepatitis C testing with a finger stick. The results take 20 minutes and the testing is confidential.
