ESCAPE THE DEBT A lot of the financial problems we have today are not a result of an unknown phenomenon, they stems from insatiable and unsustainable consumption. We live beyond our means and get debt to augument our comsumption, treating loans as income or free money to spend. The ballooning household debt problem and escallating levels of poverty are a result of such consumption where tomorrow income is spent now. The mushrooming of pawnshops and microlenders and their flourishing indicates an inverse trend for their patron’s welfare. Such spending depletes our ability to keep up with tomorrows needs , which also result in in-ability to servcice debts or liabilities when they arise in future. In our short history, it is a well known phenominon that many prominent people from politics, academics, sports or music retire into abject poverty. But the key question is why?. A majority of the working class are said to be driving A4’s (Audi A4), because their salary slips are almost always ZERO (0) depicted by the Audi sysmbol of interlocked zero(s) [four in number].
“A lot of people are driving A4(s)” The answer to the above questions relates to poor personal financial management skills that are compounded by the lack of education on this very important aspect of human live.
We are engaged in the promotion of cycling as an alternative and/or complementary to driving. We believe that cycling can be a solution to the fight against poverty, hunger and household debt since it is the cheapest mode of transport. For this to be possible each individial needs to review and set their priorities right with out internal pressure caused by lusts of this world or external social pressure. As part of the sustainable development goals people are encouraged under SDG 11 to engage in sustainable consumption and cycling is a quick win, in that it does not only contribute to the fight against poverty, but many other aspects of the sustainable development goals. The other benefit of cycling, healthwise is that cycling is the only form of active transport. Cycling can help people meet the minimum requirements for physical activity which is required to assist in the fight against the rising prevelence in non-communicable diseases. Additionally by cycling you are contributing to the fight against climate change and global warming. In all these ask yourself, “what will my children think of me when i am gone”. We are glad to say that all hope is not lost, history has proved that its possible to move from poverty to success, to move from a sick bed to perfect health. This is possible with the right mindset and then action through conscience decision making. By Mpaphi Ndubo
The problem is exacebated by the impulsive buying behaviours and social pressures to demostrate to uninterested people that one has money - showing off. How do we want our children and grand children to remember us, are we going down history as the greedy generation that has noting to show of our labour over the years. We are commanded in the bible to leave an inheritence to our children’s children. How can we achieve this if not through cultivating a culture of saving that can only be accomplished through a conscience decision making process that evaluated options before spending any dime. “Beware of the debt trap”, Banks and microlenders are out to get you there. working on your insatiable appetite for the useless small good things that life has to offer. YOUR CYCLING IDENTITY Cycling is more of a lifestyle than sports or transport. A critical part of lifestyle is personal definition which is pronounced through clothing also called fashion usually captioned as “you are what you wear” . When it come to cycling travel and transport, helmets, lycra and associates are not that relevant as they are to sports.
“You are what you wear” Cycling transport is about going wherever you want to go - be it shopping, on a date or to work. As such your dressing up and accessorising is not necessarily that of sports as you aren’t in any competition. You dress up for the occassion or for task ahead. The latest trend globally of cycling commuting also called cycling to work, is growing in popularity as more and more people are shifting from driving to cycling.
Some companies have also set up cycling facilities for official travel and such include (in our context) the Botswana Police Service where officers patrol on bikes around the city. Other companies (elsewhere) such as DHL do deliveries by bike. All these effort are in recognition of the benefits of cycling, which include amongst others the fight against the rising prevelence on non-communicable diseases, the fight against climate change and global warming, the fight against poverty and hunger by adopting sustainable transportation. In all these, there is a new trend of corporate cycling where its is not funny to gear up for a meeting as usual, in the best of your wordrobe such that your clients may think you are arriving on an Amarok or whatever they may think but only to arrive by bike. Cycle in your suit or in your high heels for ladies and see the reaction as you cruise by. its a perk you will never get enough of. By Mpaphi Ndubo

BURYING YOUR HEAD IN THE SAND
MISTAKENLY SURE THAT YOU ARE INVISIBLE
We live at a very critical moment in time and this calls for us as humanity to reconsider our ways starting from individual level to community, country, continental and global levels.
Our consuption is not only distructive but also disruptive to the natural systems that run the world such as climate change and the destruction of the ozone layer, the depletion of natural resources as well as extinction of various forms of life
At stake is LIFE itself, caused by unsustainable use of the natural resources or consumption.
“Seiphitlheng ka menwana tlheng betsho, excuses excuses excuses, seems to be the way to go, but where??

We can no longer afford to bury our heads in the sand and pretend that all is well. In setwswana there is a saying that goes “Go iphitlha ka monwana” the direct translation of which is “hiding behind ones finger(s)” It is high time we all begin to assess our consumption patterns and start to make the much required long awaited changes to conserve and preserve our environment, this planet, the only of its kind in the whole universe. There is a setswana song that used to be sung at parties titled “morobadi tsoga” meaning “Oh sluggard, awake” Our national anthems says the same when it says “....tsogang banna, emang basadi...” its a call we all have to heed and do some about our environment. The issue lies with our consumption which has become unsustainable and very distructive. It is like someone cutting off a branch from a tree which s/he is hunging onto. In reference to the image insert, imagine what will happen to our friend here in, in the jungle or desert where there are all kinds of wildbeasts ranging from lions to jackals and hynas. He would be soup for dinner in no time, a real feast or snack for the big big wild dogs In order to deal with any challenge, we need to face it and not hide or pretend there is no prblem especially noting that indesicion is another decision. We would like to extent an invitation to you as a global citizen to join us in the fight against climate change and global warming by considering your consumption and start making conscience desicions to help cut back on your carbon footprint. This is in line with SDG 11 on sustainabele consumption while your response to this call is in line with SDG 17 on partnership for sustainable development.
“TRUE LIBERATION REQUIRES ONE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR SITUATION AND DECIDE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT” Mpaphi Ndubo
One way to do that is to consider cycing which promises not only to help lower your transportation carbon trail, but also to enhance your health and wellbeing by providing the required physical activity. Other than excercise, cycling can also help in the fight against household debt and poverty By Mpaphi Ndubo Cycle Plus ©

MYTHS, MISCONCEPTIONS AND EXCUSES There are many negative perceptions and myths about cycling which may stand in the way of anyone interested in taking up cycling. We have addressed a few of those myths or misconceptions. (1) Cycling is for the poor (because every day we see security personnel cycling to and from work or oldpeople). According to statistics back in 1993, a majority of the population lived below the poverty datum line. Back then standard sevens got decent jobs, form 5 were guaranteed a good job while graduate unemployment was not heard of. With this i believe we have regressed in terms of poverty levels and even amongst the working majority who due to poor personal financial management are said to be a pay cheque from poverty, indicated by the rising household debt Cycling does not have class (case study of the developed world - Copenhagen) (2) Cycling is for kids (because children are the ones that have interest and love cycling)
10
Extra Cycling Š
(3) Cycling is for man (because the majority of those we see cycling in Botswana are men) (4) Cycling is for the rich (because we see the rich driving their Q7s with their bikes hucked atop . 2, 3 & 4 Cycling is not for any specific group or class as indicated 1 above. In some countries that have cycle to work programs, a majority of commuters cycle to work as part of health and wellness, or management of traffic or part of addressing global warming. In others there are car free days aimed at encouraging cycling. The developed world is fast moving to electric cars and will no longer allow fossil fuel cars by 2050. For health, cycling is the only active mode of transport and is also the only eco friendly or environmentally friendly mode of transport. Green transportation is the theme. (5) Cycling is dangerous (because we see the worst of drivers and the many accidents that follow. Cycling is not dangerous but cars are because of bad drivers and this is everyones observation.
We are concerned with bad driving and as part of public education we will be having public awareness campaigns to create road safety awareness for all road users in line with the DECADE OF ACTION AGAINST ROAD CARNAGE (GLOBAL CAMPAIGN).
The problem is that those who have travelled compare Botswana to the developed countries NOW, they forget we are years behind in terms of development. A good comparison would be to compare Botswana to those countries back in history.
ARRIVE ALIVE is our theme and we believe it should remain a certainty for all that when you leave home regardless of the mode of transport, you should return safely.
It is only now that such developments, as separate bike lanes are being implemented and they have not always been there, so even here we shall get them, but meanwhile the road is for all to share.
(6)There is no cycling infrastructure (because we believe the road and streets are only meant cars) Infrastructure is there albeit insufficient, the main problem is with bad driver who think that their licences gives them ownership of the road and an absolute right to drive anyhow. This is made even worse by sayings like “Right of way” and others that have resulted in loss of life for innocent road users. Impatience and road rage are a manifestation of that believe that the road is theirs and this means that those with bigger cars can abuse all other road users in smaller cars, on motor bikes, on bicycles, on wheelchairs and pedestrians. Before independence everyone shared the gravel roads without a problem, what changed when tarred roads were put up kilometer after kilometer?
(7) Bikes are expensive, (because we see and hear cycling sports fanatics chat about how expensive their bikes are) 7) Generalization is a problem. When we say cars are expensive we are wrong. The question is which cars are we talking about because there are different models with different features e.g. a 2017 AMG not the same as a 2010 one nor a 2000 honda fit for that matter. This is the same for bikes, there are sports bikes and commuter bikes with different features and of cause prices. The key questions therefore are, what does one want and what can they afford. COST OF DRIVING There are choices that have to be made to address the problems that emanate from driving, such as the reduction of transportation carbon footprint, traffic congestions, and the health toll arising from private car driving The increase in livelihoods amongst the working class has helped them get private cars giving them more convenienance at individual / personal level but presents challenges for all. First is the problem of traffic congestion at peak time when people drive to and from work. Of late the time one is stuck in traffic is increasing while traffic itself was literally unheard of in the recent past following inprovements in roads. The improvements in infrastucture and livelihoods have resulted in more apetite for the concenience of driving. Driving is not cheap. for starters a majority do not have the cash to buy the cars. Most depend on credit which ties down future incomes to acquire the luxury of car ownership.
When some one decides to buy a car, the only consideration is usually the cost of the car, which excludes many other such as insurance, finance cost and running or maintenance costs. In some areas there are tollgates and paid parking for which costs are never thought of. The down side of this, is that the many are a pay cheque from poverty any savings resulting household debt and poverty. The other costs of driving are loss of physical activity which used to come from walking, loss of valuable time in traffic and also looking for limited parking space. The lost physical activity is directly related to the increase in the prevelence of non-communicable diseases.. For companies the cost is felt in poor productivity due to ill-health, lost time when staff stuck in traffic or looking for parking, cost of providing parking to staff which is in contrast to parking for clients as well as increase medical aid contributions. These cost are also felt at national level, impacting on the overall GDP and the health bill. The other area that is impacted by driving is climate. The global warming problem is caused by the increasing carbon footprint of transportation from auto exhaust. By Mpaphi Ndubo

BENEFITS OF CYCLING Cycling presents a better alternative to driving in that ownership and maintenance are relatively cheaper, in that one does not necessarily need a mechanic to fix his/her bike. Bikes are 100% DIY for most cycling enthusiasts.
On a similar note, any such saving that have been accumulated can be invested to create wealth, helping the people break free from the bonds of poverty to a new dawn of financial freedom.
There is no traffic for cycling and neither is there need for parking space as with cars. cycling is ecofriendly or enironmentally friendly, in that there are no carbon emissions that are released into the atmoshere.
What more, cycling is noted as the new golf as it provides a platform for the who is who in business to network while enjoying a ride either competitively or for fun.
Cycling is the only active mode of travelling other than walking, which can assist people to at least get the minimum daily requirements of physical activity to stay fit and healthy. Since cycling is more healthy than driving, it therefore can be a great intervention as a preventative measure against non-communicable diseases. On a similar note, cycling is also the best intervention to the climate change problem, as it addresses the primary cause of the problem being carbon emission. Because cost of both ownership and maintenance are low, cycling is also a great way to address the problem of household debt and poverty through savings that come from shifting from driving to cycling.
As can be seen from this, cycling is more social than driving, which is characterised by road rage, anger, stress and frastrations due to traffic and the bad driving habits of other drivers. It is not so with cycling, all cyclists are more friendly than drivers and occassionally you would see cyclists wave at each other as one overtakes the other or when one cross anothers path. Coincidentally, cyclists are said to be more happier, which is what we need so badly in our country, to counter the worrying trend where every year the happiness index shows a decline for our country as opposed to other countries where cycling is more entrenched. CYCLING PRESCRIPTION Cycling is the healthiest mode of transport, as it is the only active mode of transport. One of global concerns is the rise in non-communicable diseases. This pendemic is a result of lack of physical activity. Cycling therefore stands out as a solution to fight against sedentary lifestyles especially amongst the urbanites / city dwellers or the working class / middle class. In order to derive the benefits, you are advices to take on cycling as a lifestyle, a daily affair, integrating it into all short journeys from 1km up to 1025km long.
“Cycling is best as an affair, daily thing” Cycling gives you an opportunity to “kill two birds with one stone”, which means to get more for less.
With cycling one does not only get physical activity which is good for health, but they can also begin to make savings from either petrol and other costs of car ownership as well as commuter fees for public transport. This is important as it can help create a strong financial base to be able to start investing into a better future, thus contributing to the fight against poverty and hunger as well as house hold debt. Through cycling, you are also contributing to the fight against climate change and global warming which directly reducing your transportation carbon foot-print when you cycle as opposed to driving By Mpaphi Ndubo
