BARRY HEREM: In Steel

W

e are proud to present this catalog of Barry Herem’s designs in steel in conjunction with his 2014 solo exhibition at Stonington Gallery. We have represented the artist for over 25 years, and it has been our delight to see what his ever-working mind comes up with next. Constantly inspired by the landscape of our region and the designs of the Native peoples of the Northwest Coast, Herem brings his sense of fluidity, balance and playfulness to every sculpture he creates. This catalog represents a wide range of designs from the past three decades, showing his versatility and the boundless realms of his imagination.

T

hank you to the many clients who have shared wonderful photographs with us of Barry’s works in their homes over the years, and for permission to use these images in this catalog. -Rebecca Blanchard, Co-Director, Stonington Gallery April 2014

H

erem’s early interest in coastal art began when he directed and performed fieldwork for the native Alaskan Sealaska Corporation in the 1970s. Surveying and chronicling the remains of old Native historic villages, forts and burial sites, Herem edited a 900 page report on the tribal territory of the Tlingit and Haida peoples of Southeast Alaska.

S

ince this time, Herem has been enthralled with the landscape, artforms and histories of the Northwest Coast region. His figurative and abstract work owe much to the essential forms of Northwest Coast Native art. Herem works in a wide variety of media: bronze, cast paper, glass, steel, corten steel, aluminum plate, silver, fabric, wood, and with serigraph printmaking.

I am one of its students,” Herem says of Northwest Coast formline art. “Knowing the rigorous design principles of this highly formal art, I have merely invented a few new ways and new mediums with which to express my admiration and my rapture.” Barry Herem with Rose Window at Stonington Gallery.

A

ll works in this catalog can be produced in corten steel or stainless steel. A powder coating of enamel can be applied in order to coat the steel in a specified color. To see the wide range of color options, contact the gallery for a pull sheet. The surface of corten steel will rust superficially when exposed to the elements, but the steel will not weaken or rot. Powder-coated steel will hold up well to weather, however, like the finish on a car, it may eventually see some wear and tear. The sizes listed in this catalog are Herem’s standard sizes. Dimensions are listed by the largest side, and the dimensions will increase or decrease proportionally. All sculptures may be ordered in custom sizes other than the ones listed here, proportional to their design. The prices listed here are estimates: pricing can change depending on the cost and availability of materials. Please contact us for more pricing information.

P

rocess:

Each sculpture is the result of many hours of design time: sketching, drawing, and refining the imagery. When it is complete, Herem has the drawing digitized. His drawing transforms old world graphite on paper to the new world, a digital file. The file is emailed to a steel mill, where computer-guided lasers precisely cut out the design from a sheet of metal. The artist then brings the sculptures home to naturally rust in the garden, where they will grow their elegant patina of rust. Depending on the time of year, what is in the rain, and the length of time they are left to rust, the color and texture of the rust patina will change from piece to piece.

T

his work represents a co-mingling of several design styles from throughout the Pacific. Many references to Northwest Coast formline art can be found in this design; also parts and portions of several different human and animistic figures. It can be read in any position. Most of the spiral work is drawn from the curvilinear traditions of flat design from Siberia, especially from the Amur River area. Other design systems from which I have drawn inspiration in this piece include Maori tattoo motifs in addition to Dyak, Melanesian and early Chinese design. -Barry Herem

T

his is Northwest Coast style formline art made modern and abstract.

Nothing is represented, but the curves and connecting joins are right out of the Formline tradition. It is an exercise in how such lines can be satisfying in and of themselves. It took a lot of tries, erasures and re-casting to get happy with this one. For me it broke the mold and much new work has sprung from it. -Barry Herem

R

ose window is the term for the often enormous stone circles of inset glass from Europe’s Medieval cathedrals, a theme that has interested me for some time. The overall circle with its inner spiral configuration comes from a small design in the 9th century Irish Book of Kells on display in Dublin. I have turned this into a kind of formline design, with three images within the large circle. The design on the left represents the past. It is a traditional ovoid, a shape seen in all classic Northwest Coast formline design. The design on the right is free-form, loose and flowing, and represents the present. Deconstructed, and yet not without the characteristic flow of harmoniously traditional U-forms and S-curves, this work retains the organic lines of classic design yet represents no given creature or crest. It is design for its own sake which nevertheless includes those kinds of shapes which make up the fins, feathers, beaks, talons and relief marks seen in much Northwest Coast-style work. The design on the top represents the future. It is a human figure bearing with him the essential elements of classic formline design (the term for the wide and narrow lines of directional flow in Northwest Coast style art). He is shown in profile with right side arm, knee and foot headed off in new directions with important design elements under arm and attached to his back and backside. He appears to be rushing off into the future of his own making. -Barry Herem

TOTEMIC IMAGERY

I

n the future I see formline style touching all of design

(which it often seems to have done anyway) in buildings, ships, automobiles, space stations, clothing, utensils, and public sculpture anywhere, becoming at least as pervasive as Art Deco, Art Nouveau or the creations of anything High Tech. And yet it will have had its origins on the forested fjord lands and village beaches of the Northwest Coast. -Barry Herem

n Northwest Coast myths and legends Raven is a rascal to be sure. And this one is full of attitude as well—just, I think, as he would have it. He is also a benefactor to humankind, but also as likely to be an opportunist, glutton, trickster and comedian. The world is his court and he is its arch jester. -Barry Herem

CREATURES OF THE WATER

S

o far I am of the opinion that this art, and this universal figure from the sides of Northwest Coast chests and boxes, is a creature of the sea—that this art itself was inspired by the sea. This work depicts a being with the Tlingit name of Gonakadeit, a creature who lives beneath the sea. In this work we see Gonakadeit’s reflection after having arisen on a still, foggy morning at the head of an inlet. The sight of him is said to bring wealth and good fortune, always the wish of man. He is a sea monster, yes, but also a human being with his upturned hands and typically extreme, downturned face, all of him seeming to drip with the sea. -Barry Herem

HUMAN IMAGERY

T

hese “Welcome Figure” works are based on a traditional carved motif of the “Home Figure”, which was often found on house doorways and retainer wall planks in the long houses of the Tlingit people. With the emphasized face and hands, these works are syntheses of greeting, home and history. -Barry Herem

n traditional Northwest Coast culture a family often kept its crest and lineage valuables in a carved chest or box. As a measure of esteem and spiritual security such containers were customarily carved with protective figures on the sides. This chest design features a mythical human face as protector which, to further mark its importance, is inset in the forehead with what is known as a “copper” - made of hammered copper - which itself symbolizes the wealth and high status of the lineage. The small ovular openings represent areas that were also traditionally inset with decorative shells or otter teeth. -Barry Herem Box of Treasure - Corten Steel, Copper- 29.5”h x 36”w x .25”d - $1,800

erem has produced many large works of public and private sculpture throughout the Northwest. Outstanding projects include two 10- by 30- foot walls of enameled aluminum plate - stylized whales - for Alaska Airlines. Another large, semi-public sculpture is his “Northern Light”, a 40-foot long work in iridescent acrylic rod, for Sea-Tac International Airport. A five piece bronze and cedar collection of sculptures may be seen in Seattle’s Gateway Tower. Another notable piece is “Council”, a bronze grouping of fourteen Northwest style masks, welded into an irregular 4 foot “square” single-piece sculpture.
