JOHN FLUEVOG. Story. Lucy Hyslop
In this age of omnipresent branding, many companies would kill to be an ounce like John Fluevog. Not only is his name synonymous with shoes that never fail to spark a reaction, it has morphed into an adjective (vogging), and taken on cult status for his worldwide fans. More than this, however, the man himself effortlessly possesses that quality the world foolishly tries to attain: innate coolness. He kowtows to no one. Sure, Madonna wears a pair of pink platform Fluevogs in Truth Or Dare, and Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon, The White Stripes and Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell are all aficionados (the latter even recently did an impromptu gig at his Water Street store). But celebrities expecting the star treatment? Fluevog is not a player. In fact, he notoriously turned away Marilyn Manson who was in search of freebies. “I’m kind of anticelebrity,” he confesses. “Maybe it’s snobbery, I don’t know. Why do I need them to validate what I am doing?” Today we’re sitting soft on a sofa in the office that overlooks this yawning Gastown temple dedicated to four decades in retail. “I didn’t do any of this,” he says of the empire that now spans across North America, “because I’m good at business. I’m completely disorganized. It just flowed from one thing to another.” That ‘flow’ is the stuff of legend: how he and his former partner Peter Fox were working in an older shoe store in the late Sixties before lucking out with a warehouse of bargain-priced turn-of-the-century men’s and women’s shoes in mint condition which inevitably led them to launch their own space. “Back in the Seventies, we had a very cool shoe store – it was way out there,” Fluevog explains, “and we were stuck up here in the middle of nowhere and no one knew we existed.” Even when Fox left for New York 10 years later and despite its embarrassing socks ’n’ sandals reputation, Fluevog never wanted to leave his hometown. “I owe Vancouver a big debt of gratitude – they’ve been loyal to me,” he says. “I’m a West Coaster. It’s much cooler not to be influenced by what everyone else is thinking or doing. You need to be able to dream and see things.” While Fluevog is undeniably savvy today about the retail world and social media (one recent tweet focuses on his bon mot stickers: ‘John Fluevog welcomes the world to the word we can’t say’), he still clearly speaks his mind and designs with equal freedom. “I just did whatever popped into my brain - really crazy things and they weren’t always ‘on trend’ or ‘on point’ or anything,” he says. There’s a hint of hippie in Fluevog (“We’re all about expressing the beauty of who we really are”), and there’s definitely self-effacement. Even as he walks me out of the store, past a giant picture of him in his early days, he laughs, “I was never a wild living guy, in fact, I’ve always been integrity to a frickin’ fault.” Straight, but - as he adds, and his crazy shoes testify - also very rebellious. And with John Fluevog, that’s no oxymoron. John Fluevog Gastown. 65 Water St. Gastown. 604.688.6228 - John Fluevog Granville. 837 Granville St. 604.688.2828 - www.fluevog.com John’s Vancouver... MANDULA.
DOTTED LOOP.
Wartime chic: Not the most obvious descriptor for a West Coast designer, but it is turning out to be playfully apt for Hajnalka Mandula today.
After last December’s apocalyptic release, 2012, it doesn’t sound so bad living in a city among treehuggers. However, Vancouverite, Teresa Smed won’t be going on a hungerstrike protesting deforestation anytime soon. Instead, the Vancouver-based jewellery designer follows her own principles of living eco-friendly. “I find there is a lot less waste in jewellery design,” says Smed, designer and owner of Dotted Loop. “At the end of a season I can take apart my jewellery and add colours and design to make something new and fresh.”
Story. Lucy Hyslop
She emigrated from Hungary to Vancouver in her late teens after years of being sent pictures of bears and the wildnerness from an aunt living here. “She even had a pet squirrel,” the feted designer exclaims, “I thought she had the coolest lifestyle, so I came as soon as I could.” But what she couldn’t help import as well was her unique upbringing. First, she grew up with grandparents, who nearly always wore black and natural clothes and talked frequently about the Second World War; then there was the communism in her home country. “I nonchalantly took all of that in,” she explains, “and it got stuck in my brain. So now my design has certainly got that old war feel to it; it’s got that extra kind of punch that you don’t normally see here.” Her prolific range is definitely edgy, natural, earthy, flattering and the rise in interest in her design is as breathless as her not-enough-hours-in-a-day kind of personality. She’s always in demand for magazine shoots, regularly dresses Chantal Kreviazuk (a number of her videos could effortlessly often double as Mandula commercials), and got eyes on Europe and Los Angeles where she already sells through H Lorenzo – along with stores across the States including New York City and Miami. Situated in one of the hippest blocks in Gastown (all black exterior, flanked by acclaimed bistro Jules), her Abbott Street store stands out with its incomplete tiling and exposed brickwork at one end (Mandula would have had everything this “raw” inside had officialdom not stepped in). While she worked in the style mecca of Milan for a couple of years (“just to be in the middle of it all, because Vancouver is so not,” she chuckles), she knew she wanted to be her own boss. “I couldn’t see myself designing for others for the rest of my life,” she explains. “It always has to be my vision. I’m pretty stubborn and independent like that. There’s room to grow here; it’s this amazing white canvas.” Not that it’s always been easy. “You have to have a really strong personality to survive in this man’s world,” she says. “You really have to deal with a lot of people; you can’t just sit back.” She may have been buzzing even more with the effects of a recent stint on raw food (“I feel like I’m walking on air – it gives you such energy”), but you just know that ‘sitting back’ would never be part of her lexicon. Story. Carmen Lam
The Calgary-raised, single mother of two, is a self-taught jewellery artist. “I learned by the process of disassembling and reassembling everything,” explains Smed. In 2005, Smed channeled her creative background (a clothing designer prior to) and started Dotted Loop, an eco-conscious, one-of-kind jewellery line that uses recycled antique and vintage materials. “I had always been deeply frustrated by how similar mainstream jewellery was, and from my perception it seemed like everyone had obtained their supplies from the same source,” says Smed. And from thrift stores, vintage shops, garage and estate sales, to looking into her neighbours’ basement, it’s just some of the shopping gems Smed ventures into for supplies. “Right now I’m into animals,” proclaims Smed. “I found an 18th century sterling silver stag’s head and a Mexican silver horse that is over 100-years-old.” Indeed, the University of Georgia graduate’s collection is very eclectic and distinctive: edgy punk rock merged with chic Hollywood glamour; it’s a collection that doesn’t step into a world of kitschy homemade baubles (thanks Etsy.com). “I’m motivated to colour outside the box, by the far-out styles of old-school rockstars, like David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, the Beatles, and Jimi Hendrix,” admits Smed. So it’s no surprise that Smed’s hard-work is paying off: a name inspired by Smed’s favourite Stereolab album (Dots and Loops), Dotted Loop has been featured on covers of Flare, FASHION, and Elle. With Dotted Loop, Glam Vintage Remix (Smed’s street-end collection) under her belt, Smed’s current collaborative project with Lee Deciantis is a stunning unisex collection (think St. Pepper meets 1960s Brit Punk). “I could become a pioneer in the recycled jewellery industry,” admits Smed. “Dotted Loop is always growing and exploring new horizons.” Smed and a list of local sustainable designers will be a part of Eco Fashion Week taking place February 19 at the Vancouver Public Library Square. www.dottedloop.com Teresa’s Vancouver… Shop. THE GREAT OUTDOORS. Story. RC Joseph
Adam Nation is finally gaining some well-deserved recognition as one of the finest songwriters in, well, the nation. His nouveau folk-rock outfit, The Great Outdoors, has not had a review in the past two years that didn’t include the phrase ‘critically acclaimed’; the Vancouver group’s underground allure seems to permeate every genre and scene as Nation and bandmates Randy Forester, Craig McCaul, Steven Wegelin and Steve Wells continue to win over audiences across the country. Fresh off the success of their four seasonally themed Eps (Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter – all released within the same year – an impressive feat for any band), Nation and The Great Outdoors are set to release their latest offering, Live in Nanton, Alberta. (On vinyl!) TLC* recently caught up with Nation at his East Van Eden Studios… TLC*: What’s with the name? Adam Nation: When I started this project back in 2000, it was just me with my guitar. I liked the idea of calling a one-man act something as pretentious as “The Great Outdoors.” TLC*: Why do a live album so early in this band’s recording career? Nation: The venue inspired it really - The Auditorium Hotel in Nanton, Alberta. The venue and all its patrons are truly special. Every now and then, as a traveling musician, you come across a place that makes you feel welcome and comfortable and inspired. Nanton is one of those places. TLC*: What inspires you as an artist? Nation: Inspiration comes from living. That can be the shitty times, the good times, or just the reflective times. Movement helps. Staying still can hamper the creative drive, but it doesn’t have to. Writing songs is like anything else in life. It takes practice and discipline and perseverance. Sometimes songs are triggered by a shift in the wind or a change of light, but lots of times I am slugging it out with pen and paper and my guitar or piano and really pushing myself to be creative. TLC*: Do you have Olympic fever? Nation: No. TLC*: Favourite thing about your adopted city? Nation: The sweet smell of sea and rotting garbage in the downtown, the closeness of the West End and its park and beaches, and the views of hulking mountains and the harbours, all these things made me fall for this city. VISIONS OF BRITISH COLUMBIA: A Landscape Manual. Story. Carmen Lam
You’re seeing scenic blue skies above wide-open planes to being strangely immerse to today’s monotonous glass skylines. No, this isn’t a trippy haze you’re experiencing, chances are, you’ve just stepped into the Vancouver Art Gallery’s newest exhibition, Visions of British Columbia: A Landscape Manual. One of the largest presentations of BC visual art, the exhibit of beautiful British Columbia spans across two-floors of the gallery, showcasing 37-artists and their interpretive works: Emily Carr to today’s movers-and-shakers of The Vancouver School: Stan Douglas, Jeff Wall, Ian Wallace, Rodney Graham, and Ken Lum (the same artist who made the enormous LED “East Van” standing monument at VCC and Clark). “The exhibit came about in two ways. One was the Olympics and the number of people coming from outside of Vancouver who might not know the history of the region,” said the VAG’s senior curator and exhibit organizer, Bruce Grenville. “It’s also to give locals the vision and grounding to who they are.” Grenville, alongside Scott Steedman, co-edited an unconventional exhibit publication (of the same title). Giving the literary community a chance to get involved, a roster of acclaimed authors contributed poems, novels, and historical texts to correlate with the exhibit. “We came up with text paralleling the images, like Ian Wallace’s Kwakwaka’wakw protest series from the 90s paired with text by a principal from the Green Peace movement, to a text about Stanley Park paired with a Polaroid series by Rodney Graham,” explains Grenville. With a multitude of artistic mediums being displayed, the exhibit draws reference to Jeff Wall’s Landscape Manual. “The (exhibit) subtitle is a little tongue-in-cheek, the same way Wall’s book was a tongue-in-cheek study guide to a place,” says Grenville. “And this exhibition presents a guided history; a non-congestion way of thinking about the role of photo-conceptualism and the role of photography in this province.” Visions of British Columbia: A Landscape Manual runs until April 18, 2010. Visions of British Columbia: A Landscape Manual book is available at the Vancouver Art Gallery and at selected bookstores. www.vanartgallery.bc.ca Bruce’s Vancouver… Shop. VIETNAMESE SUB. By. Chef Marnie Coldham
Addiction. The initial step to overcoming it is to first admit that you have a problem. So here it goes: I have two serious addictions. One is Vietnamese subs. The other is pairs figure skating. Sorry. It’s true. I don’t know how it all started. I guess I just thought I would only watch a little during the commercial breaks. Next thing I know, a few minutes rolled into a few hours, and I’m hooked – left to do nothing but jones hard for my next triple toe loop fix. How did this happen? Are my parents to blame by taking me to Ice Capades at an age when I was still too impressionable? Was it the Dorothy Hamill haircut I had in those Sears family portrait studio pics back in the 70s? Or is it just the anticipation of some figure skating pair manning-up to pull an Iron Lotus move? (Okay, I never claimed to be an aficionado, just an addict.) Who knows? What I do know is this: as visitors from around the world ascend upon our beautiful city for the 2010 Winter Olympics, I’m not going to be there to welcome a single one of them. I have other plans. I’ll be calling in sick and hunkering down on my couch, gold medal sandwich in one hand, TV remote in the other. And I’ll turn on the pre-show broadcast for the pairs’ preliminaries and lie to myself (yet again) that this, like every past Olympic year, will be my last. Definitely my last. Promise.

In a stainless steel bowl, mix salt, sugar, vinegar and water. Stir to dissolve sugar. Add carrots and let stand at least 20 minutes. Set aside. In a second bowl, marinate the pork with the chilies, lemongrass, garlic and vegetable oil for 30 minutes. Set aside. In a third bowl, mix together fish sauce, soy sauce, maple syrup and lime juice. Set aside. After pork is marinated, sauté in a large frying pan over high heat. Cook until golden brown (8-10 minutes), stirring occasionally. Carefully add fish sauce mixture and stir. Continue to cook for a further 3-5 minutes or until pork is nicely glazed. In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise with soy sauce. Using a spatula, slather the inside of the baguette with mayonnaise. Add slices of cucumber. On paper towel, dry onions and pickled carrots, and add to sandwich. Generously stuff the baguette with cooked pork and fresh cilantro. Serve immediately with plenty of napkins. Tips - Disposable gloves save your fingertips from burning when cutting Thai chilies. Don’t just use the leaves of your cilantro; the stems have the most flavour. Just trim the ends. Marnie’s Vancouver… Shop. Barbara-Jo’s Books To Cooks.1740 W. 2nd Ave. Granville Is. 604.688.6755 Eat.
