TANNIS HEGAN.
RETARDED VELVET.
Had I gone into some practical, well-paying line of work, I could see myself striding up to a job site in crisp white overalls with cuffs chicly rolled up, complemented by a double twill work shirt in blue-collar blue, perhaps a few oxidized silver chains around my neck and wrists, hair smartly clipped back and my look elegantly finished with Tannis Hegan rectangular canvas and goatskin bag with fine wood handles and leather strap cradling my tools. But, alas, I find myself schlepping away as a lowly Vancouver fashion stylist with a fashion communications degree no one understands, living vicariously through the clothes I pull on the models I adorn.
Theresa James and Roger Price first met at a Danny Tenaglia DJ set. Hearing their burgeoning relationship seemed like a love-story out of a summer rom-com. “I was to fly to Albania to take up my UN contract and I couldn’t wait to head down from Ottawa for the show,” said James, who at the time was a practicing Human Rights Lawyer for the United Nations. “A really good friend of ours introduced us on the dance-floor and the rest is history.” James and Prince, who also go by their alter egos Lady Holiday and Capital Prince, have since relocated to the West Coast where their label Retarded Velvet is steadily gaining momentum. Just this past spring Retarded Velvet debuted their collection at Vancouver Fashion Week. TLC* caught up with James to talk all things music and fashion.
Story. Emilia Pelech
The above fashion fantasy is not to say Tannis Hegan’s line of bags, accessories and belts are upscale carpenter’s aprons - far from it, as they can easily accompany you to a private gala at the gallery or session at the gym - but the high craftsmanship easily apparent when handling them brings the honest work of draftsmen and master carpenters to mind. This is probably because such people are involved in the production of Hegan’s wares (designed and made in Vancouver): local carpenters, metal workers, and machinists produce the wood and metal handles and fastenings, and labels are tacked in by hand with Irish linen thread. Hegan herself comes from a background of leatherwork and specialty costuming for the film industry, and I was amused to hear she was in the middle of creating a movie “moth man” when I went to pick up samples from her the other day for a shoot. Here is a little more perspective on the woman behind the goods. TLC*: Favourite film project? TH: Building a silverback gorilla for The Planet of the Apes Prequel. TLC*: Who are easiest to work with: machinists, metalworkers, or carpenters? TH: I’m obsessed with machinists. The process is very logical. It’s a very precise, masculine environment and I’m fascinated by it. TLC*: How would you feel about one of your bags on the arm of a pink Juicy velour tracksuit? TH: Confused but flattered. TLC*: Most recent addition to your line? TH: A tarnished brass necklace. TLC*: When designing, how do you start the process - from scratch,... inspiration from the materials,... flaws in existing designs you would like to fix? TH: All three. Depends on the need. Sometimes the need is to move into new territory, but sometimes the need is to fix an existing problem. TLC*: What would one find in your bag at any given time? TH: My Leatherman, glover’s needles, yoga gear.
Conscientious craft over fast fashion, Hegan’s collection inspires the worker in us all. For the cold days ahead, check out her earmuffs - fluffy numbers in recycled fur ranging from badger to fox connected by a sexy band of steel. Story. Carmen Lam
TLC*: Where did the name Retarded Velvet come from? Theresa James: The name! We get a lot of questions about the name and it’s really a short story. It came about when we were living in Horseshoe Bay, just goofing around with friends. It managed to stick and we could never come up with anything that could top it, or that so uniquely captured our style. I learned a few months ago that in urban slang it means “incredibly smooth or effortless,” which couldn’t be more perfect. TLC*: Love the logo – looks like a throwback to the 80s, reminds me of Transformers. TJ: [The logo] we were going for a modern take on the early 80s glam rock feel, tinged with a hint of cherry cola nostalgia, something sharp and memorable. TLC*: What was the inspiration behind your collection? It’s very Grace Jones meets Ziggy Stardust. TJ: Funny you should say that, it was entitled, “Grace Jones in Goa, Rick James in Rajasthan.” We were influenced by a two-month long trip to India and some of the outrageous icons of the early 80s. TLC*: Does Roger still have dreams of becoming a member of Loverboy? TJ: Are you kidding? Of course he does! Frontman, of course. When he was growing up he said he had the illest red Loverboy concert tee and he wore the thing out until he was forced, not by choice, to give it up. Recently his sister found him a new one and he’s been rocking it pretty hard. TLC*: What are you listening to right now? TJ: I’m a massive gospel house freak, I can’t get enough of vocal house – it’s so uplifting. I’ve also got Gazelle on repeat on my iPod – their music, their style, their attitude, it’s all seeping into the designs for our next collection. TLC*: What’s on your mood board for the next collection? TJ: There are A LOT of vintage West African disco album covers and pop Africana themes. Odd tribal prints and contrasting colours mixed with hardware and exaggerated silhouettes. The androgynous angle is really the foundation for the designs from now on, but the fabric selection is the real detonation that sets the whole collection off. www.retardedvelvet.com Theresa’s Vancouver… Eat. KARIM RASHID. Story. Lucy Hyslop
It takes just one glimpse to know that nostalgia bores the pants off Karim Rashid. With a prolific career boasting 3,000 original products, this global mover and shaper is all about the new. Even when immersed in an ever-changing, edgy design scene, the industrial designer stands out (and always changes things up: it’s not unusual, for example, to see Rashid DJing). “My character has always been outgoing and a bit flamboyant,” concedes the designer, who will be speaking at the IDSWest show in Vancouver October 14-17. “I never believed I had to wear a tie and suit, or ‘play the game’ in order to do my work. I am who I am. I probably was quite inspired from a young age from music, fashion, and art, having an eccentric father who was an artist, being brought up in many countries. ” And that personality all sits squarely with his mission for the “new global democratic design movement.” In short, he believes, it is designers that shape this world by experimenting with form, and he laps up the way technology allows him to mold creations “that were never possible historically.” Along with a place in 20 permanent collections worldwide, Rashid’s designs – many award winning - include the Garbo waste can and the OH Chair for Umbra, as well as work with Dirt Devil, Veuve Clicquot and Swarovski. This philosophy of the so-called Poet of Plastic - brought up in Toronto (his “little crab apple”) and awarded a bachelor in Industrial Design from Carleton - is well documented. “My interest is to make form as sensual, as human, as evocative, as sculptural as possible,” he explains, adding that as far as he is concerned plastic is the material to achieve this. “The open mind sees and experiments with the fluidness of plastic. The opportunity to develop new forms, objects that are highly complex and organic, can only really be done with plastics and bio-plastics.”
referring to the company’s ethos to keep on innovating to keep its market share. “This open-door policy of positive competition increases our standards of living, contributes to better lifestyles, and our well being.” It may be in an unforgiving schedule working in some 35 countries, but you can count on Rashid to see the upshot. As well as travel providing some of his “most beautiful moments,” there is the obvious stimulation of new people and places. Besides, he adds, “I get bored on land for too long.”
(He segues into the green era: Garbo, for example, is now made of 100 per cent corn but looks just like the original polypropylene. What he loves about the plastic, he adds, is its ability to “make products more democratic due to highspeed production processes.”)
As for direct collaboration, he is unequivocal: it’s a myth that designers have an idea and a company produces it. He continues, “The real work is this collaborative merging of minds, vision, and ideology.” Something, the New York-based designer adds, that took him many years to learn. “The only time it works is when you have the right relationship and relationships are everything in life, love, business, friendship, and support. Art is a selfish act; design is a collaborative one.”
The way consumers have become so much better informed about design – especially through the Internet - also spurs him on. “Global competitiveness and free enterprise have created some positive ramifications,” he points out,
Karim Rashid (www.karimrashid.com) is speaking at IDSwest 2010 (www.idswest com), which will be held in the new Vancouver Convention Centre, October 14 to 17, 2010

SHILOH LINDSEY.
Photo. Angela Fama
Story. Ron Coldham
It is a lady’s prerogative to take her own damn, sweet time. At least I heard somebody say that somewhere along the way. (It was probably screamed at me through a bathroom door.) In the case of Vancouver-based, ‘concrete country’ chanteuse Shiloh Lindsey, her five-year-in-the-making sophomore effort, Western Violence and Brief Sensuality, proves once again that the result is most often worth the wait. Garnering comparisons to such icons of twang as Lucinda Williams and Sheryl Crow, Lindsey belts out tales of heartache and headache with the soul of Patsy Cline, the hook of Chrissie Hynde, and the darkness of Johnny Cash. It’s the kind of music good enough to cross over boundaries – from the confines of the trailer park to the high times of the penthouse. TLC* caught up with Lindsey to discuss her new release, her inspirations, and, of course, waiting… TLC*: Your debut, 2005’s For My Smoke, was so well received. Why did it take five years for you to release a follow-up? Shiloh Lindsey: I guess it was all a matter of timing. I needed to have the life experiences in order to write the songs, and have the right people in the right studio to pull it off. It was when Kirk Douglas (who owns and operates Sound Lounge Studio) started drumming for me in mid-2009 that I got excited to produce again. He really helped me to realize my vision and how much it had transformed over the past five years. Together we just clicked in a way that enabled me to find the right sound for that vision.
MARK PECKMEZIAN. Mark Peckmezian, born 1985, is a Toronto-based artist and commercial photographer. Working within portraiture and documentary photography, Mark attempts to leverage the analog-digital divide, producing work that draws into relief the enduring value of analog-ness in our new digital-dominated photographic landscape. His photographs have been published in Prefix Photo, and on the cover of Report on Business and Function, and have been selected for inclusion in Flash Forward, touring internationally.
TLC: Who are you listening to these days? SL: Hank III. He does blasphemous things to country music; I love it. And Townes Van Zandt - I should have been listening to him a lot more a hell of a long time ago. TLC: Performing live or working in the studio: Which process most appeals you? SL: The studio because it’s therapeutic and it’s where you first get to see your vision become reality. Performing, although fun, can be extremely painful at times because I’m really shy. TLC: Who would be your dream duet partner (dead or alive) and why? SL: Tom Waits. I like singing pretty against the hoarseness that is his voice. TLC: Whose career would you like to have? SL: Gillian Welch. She’s so well respected.

TLC* NOURISH
GRILLED CAESAR SALAD. By. Chef Marnie Coldham
Vampires! I am so sick of them. I must be revealing my age when I say that I just don’t get the whole Twilight phenomenon. Personally, Robert Pattinson is as sexy to me as Jim Pattison. (Can I still make that joke, or does he own this publication now too?) My loathing of all things that suck might also stem from a traumatic event with a babysitter back when I was seven years old. My parents went out for the night leaving my older brother, my younger sister, and me in the hands of our teenage neighbour Paul. (I’ll leave out his last name in case he owns a daycare now.) Paul thought it would be fine for us all to watch a movie that he had been dying to see: Salem’s Lot. (‘Cause what’s better for a 5, 7, and 9 year old than a Stephen King horror flick?) Anyways, that movie scared us out of our minds. My brother slept with the lights on for months. My sister was even more deeply scarred: she slept with a Holly Hobbie doll tied around her neck for protection – until she was 14. And me? That movie ruined all things vampire-related for, well, eternity. Hell, I couldn’t even get turned on by Lost Boys years later. So it’s no surprise this latest crop of pale-faces doesn’t do much for me either. (Sorry again, Robert Pattinson. Blame Paul.) And as a token of my continued lack of love for everything vampire, I give you this garlicky recipe.

In a stainless steel bowl, whisk Dijon with red wine vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and lemon juice until dissolved. Add mayonnaise, sour cream, and minced garlic. Whisk all ingredients until well combined. Stir in grated parmesan cheese. Season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate until ready to use. Clean romaine hearts by soaking them in cold water for 5 minutes. Place cut side down on a sheet of paper towel lined to dry. Preheat bbq grill to high. Brush cut side of romaine with olive oil and season with a little salt and pepper. Place cut side down on grill for about 30 seconds, or until romaine is slightly charred. Place grilled lettuce, cut side up, on plates and drizzle with Caesar dressing. Using vegetable peeler, peel curls of parmesan and sprinkle on top of salad. Garnish with freshly ground black pepper. Tips: Add a little freshly grated lemon zest to dressing and serve Caesar salad with grilled prawns. Dressing also makes great dip for hot wings.
