Amersfoort is regarded as one of the cultural cities in the Netherlands. Its historic inner city, known for its well preserved medieval walls, squares and monasteries, is the ideal place for a diverse and dynamic music festival like Amersfoort Jazz. All concerts are within walking distance and free of charge to the public.

Amersfoort is known for its well preserved late medieval city centre with canals, market squares, bridges and town gates, churches, chapels and monasteries. De Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren (1444 AD) is one of the highest in the Netherlands. Some of the most illustrious people in Dutch history lived in Amersfoort, like politician Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, painter Piet Mondriaan and architect Jacob van Kampen. Amersfoort is recognized as a Dutch Creative City, fostering creativity among its citizens and providing many events and festivals. ZOOVER notes Amersfoort in its TOP 10 Dutch Best City Trips.

Amersfoort Jazz is featuring 350 different artists at 18 dedicated stages, proudly presenting living legends as well as young talents and international laureates, who are introduced to the audience and a worldwide festival scene. Each year, Amersfoort Jazz pays particular attention to World Jazz from a specific country abroad.

Amersfoort is the second largest city of the province of Utrecht, at the geographical centre of The Netherlands. Amersfoort is named after the river Amer, which today is called Eem. Based upon archeological finds of Merowingian settlements on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug (ridge), the codified law text ‘Ewa ad Amorem’ (a.k.a. Lex Francorum Chamavorum) and the Carolingian document from 777 AD, it is assumed that the region was first established in the dark episode between Roman civilization and the period of Frankish king Charlemagne. The latter gave the Amer surrounding forests and lands to Bishop Alberic of Utrecht, who was about to reside under Köln (Cologne). City rights were granted by the bishop of Utrecht in 1259 AD. The city has a strong relation to clerical civilization ever since.

Mezquida is opening the festival Amersfoort Jazz 2019 on Thursday, May 23, at theatre De Lieve Vrouw, together with the acclaimed flamenco guitarist from Barcelona, Juan Gómez ‘Chicuelo’. Chicuelo is known for his work with Maria João Pires, Carles Benavent, Jorge Pardo, Miguel Poveda, Duquende, Silvia Perez Cruz (to name a few!), and was recently awarded with the Goya Award. The duo released an album ‘Conexión’ in 2017. Chicuelo & Marco Mezquida will perform a second time on Friday, May 24, at the ‘open air theatre square’ Lieve Vrouwekerkhof. Marco Mezquida also performs solo on the same day at de Sint Aegtenkapel.

The Bop Collective XL

Born into a musical family, alto saxophonist and leader Irene Reig became a musician at a young age. She is currently living in The Netherlands, where she studied a Master Degree at the Amsterdam University of the Arts (Conservatorium van Amsterdam). With The Bob Collective, Irene Reig won the Sena Dutch Jazz Competition 2018 ‘publieksprijs’ and subsequently was endorsed by the festival Amersfoort Jazz to perform as a Sena Performers International Jazz Laureate. This year, to strengthen the sustainable relationship, Irene Reig is invited back to Amersfoort with The Bob Collective, but enlarged to a new ensemble of 12 people. In this project, Reig is combining traditional music from Catalonia and the Balearic Islands, sung in the original language and dialect (by Marta Garrett and others), with jazz elements and rhythms from the Afro-American music tradition. The Bob Collective XL is presented for the first time at the festival Amersfoort Jazz 2019.
