Amersfoort City Map

WELCOME!

It is the third edition of this unique ‘triangle event’ and together, we have worked with great commitment to realize the event in accordance with our original aim and intention. That is: to help build an eco-system of strong jazz professionals from all over the globe, who share visions and enhance collaboration on an international level. The conference hosts key-note speeches, multi-lateral meetings, round table discussions, network drinks and -of course- concerts by the Sena Performers International Jazz Laureates.

We encourage all participants to attend other great concerts at the 41th edition of the Amersfoort Jazz festival. The lineup contains some of the finest current World Jazz acts from The Netherlands and abroad, young and old, big and small. In this booklet there is more information on the festival and the artists. Enjoy! Cees Schrama Chairman Foundation JazzNL

The purpose of this event is to foster international careers by creating an environment for talented finalists from music competitions worldwide. Besides performing live in front of festival directors from around the globe as well as a jazz minded audience, these laureates establish global connections and start meaningful collaborations through the exchange of talents and networking behind the scenes.

On behalf of the JazzNL team I’d hereby like to welcome you in the beautiful city of Amersfoort. THE NEXT STEP IN TALENT DEVELOPMENT Parallelly to the Amersfoort Jazz festival 2019, the World Jazz Conference takes place. This 2019 edition will be the fifth edition, taking place from May 24th to May 26th in the conference center De Observant in Amersfoort. Initially, the World Jazz Conference was set up as a get-together for international jazz professionals in the sideline of the Amersfoort Jazz festival, but it has now grown to a fixed item in the agenda of international professionals acting in the field of jazz and world music. This is evidenced by the fact that most of them return annually and new professionals continue to join. Parallelly to the Amersfoort Jazz festival 2019, the World Jazz Conference takes place. The explanation for its success is simple: things get done in Amersfoort. This is mainly due to the participants, who show a great eagerness to work and clearly want to achieve results. They want to collaborate and develop new initiatives, help the creative sector and continue to show the dynamics of the genre.

After all, if you win an important prize as a musician in your home country, this is usually already the ‘end’ of success, in the sense that there’s no system to connect these national laureates with an international audience of decision-makers. Hence, in 2016 the conference participants shared the idea that an international palette of laureate talent would be desirable. The idea was immediately supported by the conference visitors and the Dutch neighbouring rights society Sena Performers promptly adopted the concept. This allowed the International Jazz Laureate Festival to grow into a strong showcase program that helps ambitious musicians and bands to take the next step into an international career. The 2019 edition

Achieving proper results is of great importance to the conference participants. One of the most striking results of the past few years is the Sena Performers International Jazz Laureate Festival.

Over the years the conference participants have streamlined the Laureate Festival by installing a program committee and introducing the partnership program. Artists are only eligible to perform and subject to selection by the program committee if they are endorsed by a festival from their home country and, of course, if they have participated or won a relevant competition recently.

In 2016, the conference delegates concluded that it was often difficult for award-winning artists and musicians to take the next step: an international career.

Representatives from festivals who were participating at the conference were offered the option to enter into a partnership with the JazzNL Foundation, which would

Birth of the Int. Jazz Laureate Festival

WORLD JAZZ CONFERENCE 2019 GUIDE• page 4

result in having a guaranteed slot at the Laureate Festival for the artist they are endorsing. In return the festival promises to invite an artist or band to their own festival, which they’ve seen performing in Amersfoort. The partnership program received a high amount of interest and as a result almost all performances at the Laureate Festival 2019 issued from a partnership program, which – per definition of the partnership program – will result in a large amount of invitations to play at other festivals for artists that are performing in Amersfoort during this year’s festival weekend. The Next Step in Talent Development The board of the JazzNL Foundation and its sponsors and partners are extremely proud to see the World Jazz Conference grow into a platform which contributes to the development of talent. Every year the conference participants manage to come up with more ideas and initiatives which are adopted by the group, a group which shares a vision: the vision that festivals play a crucial role in the international development of talent and that collaborating is one of the most important aspects in achieving results. World Jazz Conference theme We’ve created this great showcase of highly potential international talents and set up fruitful partnerships, but what’s the next step? What can we do more? How can we provide opportunities for artists on an international scale? How should we collaborate as festivals in order to contribute to the careers of talented musicians? This will be the topic of this year’s conference. Like every year we have exciting round table talks and work group discussions during which we hope to ignite new initiatives and stimulate bilateral collaborations. All in favour of the commonly shared goal of the network: helping talent to break

through internationally. To give you an example, one of the planned sessions during the conference will consist of festivals within the EU investigating the possibilities of issuing a joined application for subsidy from the European Union under the name: Laureates on Tour. What can I do to contribute? Therefore, the central question directed at the conference participants of this year is basically: “What can you and your organization do in your home country to facilitate international growth of talent? What would you need from other participants in achieving this common goal? Can you stimulate your own national network of relevant players to join you in facilitating initiatives?” These are difficult questions which are not easily answered, but as we’ve seen over the relatively short 5 year history of the World Jazz Conference: things get done in Amersfoort, and although steps are small and taken cautiously, we’re definitely moving forward, visible in the fact that the conference participants have already had a positive effect on the international chances of jazz musicians. It is satifying to see that the World Jazz Conference, Amersfoort Jazz and the Laureate Festival has an effect on the conference participants and stirs their interest and ambition. We are convinced that the 2019 edition will add a new chapter to this book written by the frontrunners of the international world jazz scene. We hope you’ll have a great conference and enjoy an exciting festival, and we greatly look forward to your input in the sessions. Michel Peek, World Jazz Conference director

DE OBSERVANT

De Observant is a fully restored monastery, originally dating from the 15th century. Its name derives from the monastic Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (also known as Trappists), that settled in Amersfoort, a cultural city with medieval roots and a strong relation to clerical civilization. Over the last years De Observant has evolved into a full fledged modern cultural info centre, a place for meetings and events, with conference rooms, a courtyard and a grand café, suitable for sessions and concerts. De Observant is the hub for press and artists during the festival, including the conference and the Sena Performers International Jazz Laureate Festival. WORLD JAZZ CONFERENCE 2019 GUIDE• page 8

Their first song ‘7 Motions’ represents seven different sections and different rhythms which give a dynamic feeling to the listener. The composer Asli Ozer explains that each part of the song has its own story with different feelings and took her one year to finalize the composition.

Each year, the festival Amersfoort Jazz pays particular attention to World Jazz from a selected country abroad. In recent years the festival’s focus has been on World Jazz from Thailand, South-Africa, Spain and Belgium. In 2019 Amersfoort Jazz will present the Focus on World Jazz from Israel. Amersfoort Jazz proudly presents some of the most current and outstanding World Jazz artists from Israel: the boundless duo Subtext (Yoav Eshed & Gadi Lehavi), the quintet of the mind-blowing saxophonist Amit Friedman and the extravagant trio Shalosh (Gadi Stern - piano, David Michaeli - double bass, Matan Assayag drums), featuring charismatic singer Tula Ben Ari. The gifted pianist Nuphar Fey plays with her sister Telalit (cello/vocal). Finally, Israeli guitarist Eran Har Evan (who lives in The Netherlands) plays in duo with jazz singer-songwriter Claire Parsons from Luxembourg.

FESTIVAL AMERSFOORT JAZZ 2019 | FOCUS ON WORLD JAZZ FROM ISRAEL

An Israeli take on jazz Barry Davis

O

f all the artistic disciplines, there is probably none more of a cross-fertilization nature than jazz. After all, didn’t the multistratified music emanate from New Orleans, then home to a multitude of cultures and communities? The latter epithet could also be attached to Israel. This modestly proportioned Middle Eastern country is populated by people from across a broad spectrum of cultural and ethnic backdrops – from Germany to Yemen, and Brazil to Russia, and much betwixt - much of which informs the way Israeli jazz has evolved, particularly in the last three or so decades. And it has grown in truly dramatic exponential manner. The country’s first major jazz event, the Red Sea Jazz Festival started out, as a pretty diminutive affair, in the southern resort of Eilat in 1987. A couple of years later Tel Aviv, the country’s main cultural hub, got its own annual festival, and there are now similar ventures dotted around the country, through the calendar, complemented by regular gigs, of local artists and acts of varying stature from abroad, appearing at such venues at the Zappa Club, Levontin 7 and the Yellow Submarine.

Barry Davis photo BD

And that is even without mentioning the disproportional impact Israel expats have had on the New York scene for quite some time now. Increasingly, quite a few Israeli jazz musicians also live, or frequently ply their craft, in Europe, such as France-based pianists Yaron Herman and Yonatan Avishai, Paris resident saxophonist Shauli Einav and Germany-domiciled pianist Omer Klein. This migratory pattern, as budding Israeli jazz musicians went in search of new cultural and artistic vistas, is one of the principle driving forces behind the incredible surge of interest in, not to mention incremental vertical shift in the quality bar, of jazz offerings from Israel.

WORLD JAZZ CONFERENCE 2019 GUIDE• page 36

An Israeli take on jazz | Barry Davis

That can largely be traced back to 1992 when, within the space of 24 hours, bassists Omer Avital and Avishai Cohen, and trombonist Avi Lebovich, all boarded planes to the Big Apple, ostensibly to study, but primarily to share the bandstand with some of the greats and upwardly mobile artists in the jazz world’s epicenter. Nigh on 30 years later, after working with the likes of James Moody, Chick Corea and Milt Jackson, Lebovich is now back in Israel and has helped to push the local jazz community ante up a couple of notches, partly by establishing an acclaimed big band, which also features some of Israel’s most innovative middle generation players, including reedmen Alon Farber and Amit Friedman. Cohen, of course, continues to draw large and highly enthused audiences across the globe, while Avital, who was in at the inception of the now 25 year old Smalls jazz club in Greenwich Village, is a bona fide member of the New York jazz scene’s A-lister echelon, making frequent forays to top venues and festivals around the globe.

Amit Friedman photo Alon Garini

A handful of Israeli musicians preceded the Lebovich-Cohen-Avital threesome across the Pond – saxophonist Albert Piamente, guitarist Mordy Ferber and bassist Eli Magen were part of the small earlier vanguard – but it is the Nineties triad’s relocation that pointed the way for subsequent generations of Israelis who felt they needed to get a taste of the big wide world, and rub shoulders with their American and other counterparts, if they were going to make tangible creative progress.

Barak Weiss photo Einat Hurvitz

Barak Weiss, artistic director of the Tel Aviv Jazz Festival and annual Israeli Jazz and World Music Showcase, says that initial Israeli plunge into the New York jazz community was a pivotal moment for the entire Israeli jazz community. “Suddenly, musicians from here had role models. That is very significant.” Things have moved along since then. “There are, today, over 200 very active Israeli musicians in New York and dotted around the global jazz arena,” Weiss continues. “A country of approximately 9 million people, with no jazz heritage to speak of, has become something of a jazz super power. That is quite incredible.”

WORLD JAZZ CONFERENCE 2019 GUIDE• page 37

An Israeli take on jazz | Barry Davis

It is, indeed. But what is most intriguing about improvisational sounds coming out of Israel, and artists who hail from here, is the increasing prominence of “native” material. As most jazz artists will tell you, everybody comes up learning their trade by trying to get as accurate a handle on the work of their idols of choice as possible. But there comes a time when you have to find your own voice – bring your personal and cultural baggage to your own singular mode of expression. Cats like Avital, with his Moroccan and Yemenite roots, Cohen and his stellar namesake trumpeter, Jerusalemite saxophonist Nadav Haber who introduced some Ethiopian influences into the idiom, Herman whose 2012 release Alter Ego, features a reading of the Israeli national anthem Hatikva, all bring uniquely Israeli seasoning to their work, while pianist Omri Mor is now known around the world for his Andaloujazz synthesis of jazz and Andalusian music. All that is a far cry from the pioneer generation of Israeli jazz players – such as pianist Danny Gottfried and drummer Areleh Kaminsky – who were introduced to the wonders of jazz by American saxophonist Mel Keller who moved to Israel in the 1950s. Yes, there were other immigrant musicians, like Romanian-born saxophonist Peter Wertheimer, Soviet-born avant garde keyboardist Slava Ganellin and similarly freewheeling clarinetist Harold Rubin, who came from South Africa, but, by and large, back then Israeli jazz musicians toed the bebop line.

Joachim Berendt, in his seminal tome The Jazz Book, talks about the symbiotic relationship that exists between the “sounds around us” and jazz. Taking the sensorial tag a step further one could tie in the range of food we ingest and smell into the creative hinterland that spawns improvisational music. Weiss feels that the eclectic Middle Eastern vittles factor runs parallel with the explosion of Israeli jazz, and the willing and ability of local players to let it all hang out, even if they don’t hail from New York, Chicago or New Orleans. Interestingly, he associates that with the Oslo Accords signed by Israel and the PLO in Washington DC in 1993. Even so, for most young players from here, going to New York, to get a firsthand taste of the jazz action where it really mattered, was still the stuff of pipe dreams. But then, New York came to Israel in the shape of a certain Arnie Lawrence. The then 59 year old reedman moved to Jerusalem, from New York, in 1997. Prior to that Lawrence had worked with a veritable Who’s Who of jazz luminaries, including Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus and Clark Terry, and had helped to found the jazz department of the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music.

An Israeli take on jazz | Barry Davis

Israeli youngsters, such as Mor, Einav and bassists Hagai Bilitzky and Tal Gamliel, had an actual corporeal, breathing, talking and music-playing link with the art form’s homeland. This was in the pre-You Tube days, when the only way you could get any real handle on what was going down “over there” was by going along to a gig of some visiting big gun, or possibly catching a number on TV. Lawrence opened a school in Jerusalem, where he welcomed youngsters of all ethnic backgrounds and religions and, for example, set about marrying the melodies, rhythms and sensibilities of jazz with the sonic baggage of Arab musicians. He even took some of them to the IAJE Conference in New York, and to China, in the early Noughties. Today, the likes of former longtime New York resident pianist Anat Fort, trumpeter Avishai Cohen, and pianists Yonatan Avishai and Shai Maestro are members of the ECM stable, and acts like the Shalosh trio, saxophonist Daniel Zamir and guitarist Gilad Hekselman are in high demand across the globe, putting their very own Israeli-nuanced take on jazz out there.

AMERSFOORT, MEDIEVAL CITY

Amersfoort is the second largest city of the province of Utrecht, at the geographical centre of The Netherlands. Amersfoort is named after the river Amer, which today is called Eem. Based upon archeological finds of Merowingian settlements on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug (ridge), the codified law text ‘Ewa ad Amorem’ (a.k.a. Lex Francorum Chamavorum) and the Carolingian document from 777 AD, it is assumed that the region was first established in the dark episode between Roman civilization and the period of Frankish king Charlemagne. The latter gave the Amer surrounding forests and lands to Bishop Alberic of Utrecht, who was about to reside under Köln (Cologne). City rights were granted by the bishop of Utrecht in 1259 AD. The city has a strong relation to clerical civilization ever since.
