School’s Out - Kid’s Crafts to Entertain Them All Summer Long! Summer is just around the corner and for all the mother’s and father’s out there, that means the kids are home for the next three months. It also means, you have to find stuff for these kids to do for the next three months or risk hearing those two awful words “I’m bored!” all summer long. Many parents start looking into summer camps and day camps long before the summer comes along. If these aren’t options for your family, there is a ton of crafty, education filled activities that can be incorporated into your child’s day to help alleviate the boredom and possibly teach them a thing or two. There are also workshops all over the place geared directly toward children during the summer to aid in achieving both the goal of keeping them occupied and stirring a new interest by education. While many think of sidewalk chalk, homemade play-doh and finger paints as fun children’s activities, there are a number of easy, fun projects to get children involved in our industry. Melt and Pour soap is a versatile and easy way to get your children involved in soap making. There are so many fun shapes and sizes that are perfect for children. Plus, there are fun embeds such as dinosaurs, snakes, rubber duckies and a number of other toys that can be placed in soap and then retrieved when the soap is used. On the flip side of creating activities for children within our industry is creating the type of products that will inspire moms and children alike to pick up this great hobby. Create a ready-to-make kit full of the essentials needed to get a child started. Moms can pick up this easy activity for their children and help them create fun projects all summer long. If you happen to have the ability, you could also teach classes to the younger set to get them hooked early. Summer is the perfect time to introduce this type of class to the kids around your home base. It’s also a great way to push additional product out as the children and their parents will be more than happy to buy and keep the ingredients needed to make the soaps/products you teach in your workshops. We’ve compiled the best of what we offer the younger set in the next few pages and all products/ recipes/kits can be found at www.WholesaleSuppliesPlus.com. We have a number of fun embeds to offer children, plus great molds to create fun-shaped soaps, perfect for children. Wholesale Supplies Plus also provides easy-to-follow recipes that can be used for any workshops you’d like to hold and ready-to-make kits to provide you all the ingredients you need to create the products we have available.

Featured Inspiration: Father’s Day!
Give the Father in Your Life a Handmade Gift All About Him! The biggest conundrum everyone has during Father’s Day is, ‘What do we get dad?’ As uncomplicated as men are, finding the perfect present for them always seems like a Herculean task. The biggest issue everyone has is, how do you give something that will match the care and support your father has provided all these years? You want to be original while also giving him something he really would enjoy. However, 9 times out of 10, Dad has already bought what he wanted months ago or he has everything that he needs or, the worst of the worst, you simply don’t have a clue what he needs/wants/has. You know he’d appreciate another tie or hammer, but it probably isn’t something that he needs. You know he might want the latest technological piece of fun, but which one? And if you do happen to go out on a limb to surprise him with something you’re pretty sure he needs or wants, he probably already has it. A natural place to go is with a handmade gift. It is an easy way to show your dad just how much you care for him by the time and effort you used in producing the gift. With the invent of Pinterest, it’s really easy to come up with a bunch of fun, handmade ideas that’ll be perfect for your dad. Even doing a quick search, we found adorable handmade presents that involved generational photos, your father’s favorite food/drink, and personalized artwork. The options with handmade gifts are endless and the personalization that you can do gives them that little special something that store bought gifts can lack. In our industry, creating a great handmade Father’s Day present is easy. One of the things most dad’s don’t do is pamper themselves. Why not make it a priority for them by creating their own personal care items? If your dad is a handyman, create a soap to exfoliate the toughest of stains and calluses from their working hands. Make a luxurious shaving cream that even the toughest dad will want to use. You could also go the novelty route by creating a soap with fun embeds based on things your dad likes such as cars, motorcycles or an old photo. You can also create a number of products similar to these for your customers. Anyone wanting to get a handmade gift but without the time or ability to do so can look to you for the perfect gift for their fathers. Take this holiday as an opportunity to start a small line of products for men just to see how they fare. Wholesale Supplies Plus is a one-stop shop to help you create the best products for Father’s Day. Just take a look at the following pages and at all of the products, recipes and kits www.WholesaleSuppliesPlus.com has to offer to get you started!

Featured Inspiration: Sunny Days!
Summer’s Best Gift - Sunny Days! Is there anything better than a warm, sunny, summer day? Everything is bright and bold as the sun sets everything alight. While we all know the uplifting effects sunshine has on us, studies on the actual physical and psychological benefits sunlight has on humans are emerging left and right. Vitamin D is made in our skin when we get UV light exposure. Vitamin D is also a commonly deficient vitamin within humans, especially those within cold or rainy climates. Vitamin D contributes to mood and your immunity. Even a few minutes in the direct sunlight each day can be enough to improve your mood and boost your immune system. Vitamin D has also been said to stave off more serious diseases such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Type 1 Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis, Breast Cancer, Colon Cancer and Prostate Cancer.* Vitamin D is also linked to better calcium absorption, increases in metabolism, lower blood pressure, reduced stroke risk and the ability to sleep better. Plus, we are more likely to move and get more physical activity when enjoying our time in the sun, which has its own benefits.** Given the natural popularity of sun worship and the now touted benefits of finding a few moments in the sun each day, there is an abundance of retail products dedicated to enjoying your time on a sunny day. Retail stores explode with shorts, sunglasses, sun dresses, flip flops, tank tops, sunscreen, sun hats, sun soothing lotion and so much more as soon as the climate even begins to hint at warmer temperatures. The inspiration that comes from the sun is apparent in all retail stores almost as soon as the Valentine’s decorations are torn down. Take advantage of this by adding some sun-specific items to your collection. You can take the bright yellows, blues and greens of a brilliant summer day and make a beautiful summer day inspired soap. Incorporate some soothing aloe lotions into your bath and body collection to cater to those who might have spent a bit too much time in the sun. Create some fun glitter body gels that are fun to use during the summer and will appeal to female teenagers and adolescents. Now is also the perfect time to create cute summer-themed guest soaps with fun molds in the shape of flip-flops, summer fruits or seashells. Still stumped on what to create? Then take a look at the pages that follow for some great inspiration directly from Wholesale Supplies Plus. We have recipes, kits and ingredients that can get your creative juices flowing to create the perfect line of sunshine themed products. Remember, everything you see within Handmade is available to purchase at www.WholesaleSuppliesPlus.com. You can click on any product, recipe or kit within Handmade and be taken directly to its spot on our site. Add it to your cart and you’re ready to go! * http://www.biology101.org/archive/2012/04/sunshine-and-biology-how-sunlight-affects-mood-immunity-more/ ** http://simplegreenorganichappy.com/2012/05/10-health-benefits-of-sunshine-get-outside/

1. NOTE: If you are making these products for sale, good manufacturing practices recommend you wear a hairnet, gloves and a mask. We also recommend a clean apron. 2. Empty the 16 oz. container into a large glass measuring cup. 3. Measure 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of shower gel. Add to the measuring cup with the foaming bath whip. 4. Using a hand mixer, whip until there are no clumps and all ingredients are well mixed. 5. Add .5 oz. or 1 Tablespoon Grape Soda Fragrance oil and mix again. 6. Divide into three equal size parts. 7. Add six drops of Apple Red color to one portion and mix well. 8. Add six drops of Lemon Yellow color to another portion and mix well. 9. Add six drops of Ocean Blue color the third portion and mix well. If a darker color is preferred, add one drop at a time to avoid over-coloring your bath paints. 10. To get soap into the bottles, we recommend using a zip lock bag or a piping bag. To use zip lock, place mixture into bag, cut off one corner and squeeze product through hole to put into bottles. 11. Place yorker top on bottles and enjoy! 12. Note: We have included primary colors in this recipe so that you can make as many color combinations as you would like. Just be sure to add color a little at a time.

Directions
1. NOTE: If you are making these products for sale, good manufacturing practices recommend you wear a hairnet, gloves and a mask. We also recommend a clean apron. 2. Each slot for your picture is 2” x 3”. To download your picture: 3. YOU MUST USE A LASER PRINTER TO PRINT ON THE EMBED PAPER. Here is a link for the template: 4. Save a copy of your photo that is 2”x3”, then place into the word template. Simply click within each box, then choose “Insert” from the top menu. Choose the option to insert a photo. Then select the photo you had saved and place it in. 5. This will place the picture into the template and will print the perfect size to embed in the soap. 6. Weigh 2 oz. of extra clear soap. Place in plastic beaker. Add 1/2 cube of Yellow Gold Sparkle Color Bar. 7. Place in microwave and heat until completely melted. Stir soap mixing the gold color into the soap. 8. Fill a plastic dropper with gold soap and fill the thinnest strip of the Deco It-Macrame Silicone Mold. Let soap harden, about 5 minutes, and remove from mold. 9. After filling strip, place plastic dropper into cup of warm water. Squeeze dropper so it fills with warm water. This keeps soap from hardening in dropper so it can be reused. 10. When ready to continue making another strip of gold, squeeze out the water from the plastic dropper. If gold soap has hardened, place plastic beaker in microwave for about 6-8 seconds. 11. Continue making until you have 8 strips. You will need 2 strips per picture frame. 12. Turn blue silicone mold upside down. Place 4 strips along the outsides of the cavity, framing like a picture. Taking a soap cutter, cut the strips diagonally across the cavity from one corner to another. 13. Repeat with other side, starting at top right hand corner and cutting across to bottom left corner. This will ensure the frame pieces fit together when placed in soap mold. Pieces should fit together at a 90° angle.

14. Continue until all 4 picture frames are cut into diagonal pieces. Place frame pieces together to be sure they fit properly. Cut to fit if they are not. 15. Turn soap mold over and place on cookie sheet. This will give mold stability if it needs to be moved. 16. Weigh 2 oz. of crystal clear soap in a plastic beaker. 17. Take the first gold frame pieces and spritz them all over with rubbing alcohol. 18. Pour a thin layer of soap into the first cavity. Immediately place frame pieces, design-side down into the mold being sure all corners are even. Spritz again with alcohol. 19. Do this with remaining 3 soap cavities. Heat soap slightly if it starts to harden. 20. Melt another 2 oz. of crystal clear soap in plastic beaker. Spritz tops of soap in each cavity with alcohol. Pour thin layer of soap over each and immediately place picture upside down into soap. Press gently so picture is absorbed with liquid soap. Spritz top with alcohol. 21. Continue until all 4 cavities are finished. Let soap harden. 22. Weigh 18 oz. of white soap and cut up into chunks. Place in glass measuring cup. Heat in microwave until completely melted. 23. Add .5 oz. (1 Tbsp) of fragrance oil and mix into melted soap. When soap temperature reaches 125°F or less, you are ready to pour. 24. Spritz tops of each soap cavity with alcohol. Pour white soap to the top of each cavity. Spritz again with alcohol. 25. When soap has completely hardened, remove from mold. Gently pull away sides of one cavity from soap, turn over and gently press on bottom to release soap. 26. You now have a beautiful soap embedded with a very special photo. 27. Packaging suggestion: Wrap soaps with clear saran wrap and add label to back. 28. Repeat above steps to make additional 4 bars of soap.

Directions
1. NOTE: If you are making these products for sale, good manufacturing practices recommend you wear a hairnet, gloves and a mask. We also recommend a clean apron. 2. Weigh 1 oz. of clear soap and place in a plastic beaker. Heat in microwave until melted, approx. 10-15 seconds. 3. Add Red Orange Oil Locking Mica Shimmer or Pink Sparkle Mica Powder and stir to mix until desired color is achieved. 4. Using a plastic dropper, pipe melted soap into flowers only. 5. If soap starts to harden, melt in microwave for about 10 seconds. 6. To keep dropper flowing freely, place dropper in warm water when not in use. Before using again, be sure to empty water from the dropper. 7. Continue until all flip flops are done. 8. Allow the flowers to harden before continuing to next step. 9. Weigh 1 oz. of Baby Buttermilk soap and place in plastic beaker. Heat in microwave until melted, approximately 15-20 seconds. 10. Using a plastic dropper, pipe melted soap into the straps of each flip flop cavity covering the flowers, if possible. 11. As above, if soap starts to harden, melt in microwave for about 10 seconds. Place dropper in warm water during the piping process. 12. Continue until all flip flops are done. 13. Weigh 4 oz. of clear soap. Cut soap into small chunks and place in small glass measuring cup. Heat in microwave until melted - about 15-30 seconds. 14. To melted soap, add Yellow Oil Locking Mica Shimmer until desired color is achieved. Mix well. 15. Add 3 ml. of Calypso Sun fragrance oil. Mix well. 16. Spritz inside of each flip flop cavity generously with alcohol. This ensures the overpour will stick to the straps and flower poured earlier. 17. Pour soap into each cavity leaving a 1/4 inch of room for your final layer of Baby Buttermilk soap. Allow soap to harden. 18. Weigh 2 oz. of Baby Buttermilk soap and place in plastic beaker. Heat in microwave until melted, approximately 15-30 seconds. 19. Spritz inside of each flip flop cavity generously with alcohol. 20. Pour buttermilk soap into each cavity until they are filled to the top. Spritz again with alcohol. 21. Once soap has hardened, carefully remove from mold. Package and label accordingly. 22. Long Days of Summer Soap Makes 40 oz.
There’s a bit of every summer color in this soap: green for grass, blue for summer sky and yellow for lots of sunshine and dandelions!
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
8.4 oz. Coconut Oil (76 degree) 4.2 oz. Mango Butter 4.2 oz. Sweet Almond Oil 11.2 oz. Olive oil 8.1 oz. Distilled Water 4 oz/113 grams Sodium Hydroxide 1 oz. WSP Caribbean Coconut FO 1 tsp. WSP Matte Cobalt Blue 1 tsp. WSP Matte Woodland Green Oxide 1 tsp. WSP Yellow Oil Locking Mica Shimmer 1 tsp. WSP Matte Teal Green 1 WSP Silicone Loaf Mold 4 2-cup bowls 1 Cup water (for rinsing electric color mixer) Wooden skewers for swirling WSP Electric Color Mixer
Directions
1. First ready the dry colorants by adding each to the four respective bowls or containers that will hold at least two cups of soap. (Feel free to get creative and mix a little of blue colorant into a green or vice versa.) Set aside with cup of water and have electric color mixer handy. 2. Melt coconut oil and butter in a stainless steel pot. Now add room temperature oils to the pot. Add the fragrance oil to the melted oils/butter and stir well. (Adding fragrance now is a tip for having more time to work with colors.) 3. Next add lye to water in plastic container and stir until dissolved. At desired temperatures, add lye solution to oils and butters (recommended temperature is around 115F or cooler). Bring to a very light trace using an immersion blender. (You’ll want to stop at light trace to have time to work with colors and swirl.) 4. Pour off approximately ¼ cup of soap into each bowl with premeasured colorant. Working quickly, use electric color mixer to combine the small amount of soap evenly with the dried colorant. (This is easier than chasing the colorant around in a larger amount of soap). Repeat until each color is blended evenly and until no color clumps remain. Use the cup of water to rinse the mixer before switching to the next color. 5. Disperse the rest of the plain soap batter evenly between the bowls and hand stir colorants until well mixed. (The colorant mixer will thicken the soap if used too long.) 6. Take turns with each color and start pouring half of each bowl into the mold in a back and forth pattern. Pour each color lengthwise, up and down the mold. Move on to the next color and make sure to overlap each one. There isn’t a wrong way to do this – enjoy the creative process! 7. After all of the colors are in the mold, insert a wooden skewer into one corner of the mold and begin to “draw” circles lengthwise down the mold and then back up the other side in a U-shape pattern. Again, there is no wrong way to swirl. Just resist the urge to “over-swirl” – otherwise your colors will run together and look “muddy”. 8. After swirling, tap the mold firmly to release the bubbles or else you may have holes in your soap. Let sit overnight and cover with plastic wrap to prevent any soda ash. Unmold and slice. Let cure for 4 weeks before use.

You Want Success, So What’s Stopping You? Is it possible that your thoughts can actually prevent you from being successful? Sure it is! Your belief system dictates how you act, what you do, and the amount of emotional risk you are willing to take. In fact, I used to believe that if I ever became “successful” my life would change in ways that felt uncomfortable and undesirable to me. And one day I realized just how limiting my subconscious beliefs had become. While developing an exercise for one of my workshops it hit me that my image of successful people was, well, very limiting shall we say? I wasn’t fully conscious of this image until then, and it sure kept me stuck! After all, who would want to turn into some form of an unapproachable, unfriendly snob? {Laughing!} Yup, that’s what I believed; subconsciously at least. But how can a simple vision of an unappealing future keep me from success? And how did I know that it was, indeed, limiting my success? Well, I wasn’t attracting enough clients, money was slipping through my fingers and I felt stuck and fearful about taking the risks associated with growing my business. Fear of unpleasant change can do funny things to a person; and I saw success as unpleasant! So I took myself through my own process. That’s right: I walked the walk and talked the talk! Below are some of the questions I asked myself to reveal my limiting beliefs. Before asking them of yourself, take a moment to think about where you might be stuck. Do you make excuses or procrastinate on certain things in your life or business? Do you feel uncomfortable when you imagine success in your life? Have you been spinning your wheels instead of making progress? These questions will help you to find out. Think of one goal, desire or dream that you have not yet achieved and answer these questions: • What are the negative consequences that may occur
when I achieve my desire? (You heard me right: negative consequences!) • Who will I be when I achieve this dream or goal? What will change? • What will I expect of myself once I accomplish this goal? • What will others expect of me? Your answers may provide insights around your limiting beliefs, but that’s just the beginning. How do we change these beliefs and knock down the seemingly impenetrable barrier to your success? Sometimes the awareness alone is enough to create a break through, but as I found out in my next discovery, we need help to eliminate strong limiting beliefs. We can’t always change with shear willpower because the things that keep us from moving forward are stored at the cellular level. That’s right, the negative thoughts, worry, and stress can come from a level deep inside of us that we can’t simply decide to change. These come from negative life experiences which are literally downloaded into our cellular memory. They become a part of who we are-- and letting go isn’t always easy. There are a few methods that address this problem; the method that I use in my life and as a coach is called The Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT Tapping. The success rate with EFT is very high and I find that its results are usually permanent. Whatever method you choose, it’s important that you understand that the procrastination, fear, and stress that comes from these embedded beliefs do not make us weak or inferior in any way. We all build walls around ourselves at some point in our life; it’s just the way the human mind works. It’s OK to reach out for help; breaking through the walls all by yourself is not easy. In fact, sometimes it’s impossible. Are you ready to create change, once and for all? Great! Hopefully the questions you’ve answered here will get you on your way. Again, once you make the decision to change, understand that you may need some “outside interference”. Coaches, therapists and successful mentors are all good resources. Try to avoid staying in the family and your circle of close friends; they love you too much to be objective. Go ahead. Shape those limiting beliefs into positive, uplifting images of a successful future, beginning now!

How The SBA Can Help You The Small Business Administration will celebrate its sixtieth anniversary in July. It was established as an independent agency of the federal government to help start new businesses and provide tools to help them grow. It accomplishes its mission through direct action to counsel, aid, assist and protect small business interests. It has formed partnerships with many public and private organizations, and maintains an extensive network of field offices to deliver its services throughout the United States.
Business Financing
The SBA has a wide array of assistance programs that focus on the four primary functions outlined below.
The SBA does not loan money directly, but establishes guidelines for loans with partner institutions that are guaranteed by the federal government. As a general rule, the SBA only backs such loans if a business is unable to obtain other financing on reasonable terms. Applying for an SBA loan is similar to applying for a standard commercial loan except there’s no risk to the lender. Loan requirements may change as federal priorities and fiscal policies are adjusted to deal with current economic conditions. The SBA has a program to guarantee surety bonds for businesses that can’t get them through normal commercial channels. A surety is someone who assumes responsibility for paying the debt of another. A surety bond is a three-party agreement where the surety assures completion of a project if the contractor is unable to perform successfully. This program guarantees the surety that the SBA will cover a portion of any loss if the contract is breached. This provides an incentive to sureties to provide bonding for contractors, increasing their opportunities to win contracts. The bonds cover bid, performance and payment for contracts up to $5 million. In limited cases, the bonds may cover contracts up to $10 million. The Small Business Investment Company (SBIC) program engages private investment companies to provide venture capital for small businesses. The SBICs have two sources of capital funding: government-licensed private investors and low-cost debt that’s guaranteed by the federal government. SBICs are limited to investing in promising small businesses that qualify based on their need for equity or debt financing. Federal Procurement The SBA’s government contracting office has a statutory goal of awarding 23% of federal prime contracts to small businesses. This office establishes goals with departments and agencies to achieve the overall objective of maximizing contract awards for these businesses. It also sponsors outreach programs, training, and subcontracting opportunities. The training includes detailed instructions on how to qualify for government contracts. The SBA is heavily engaged with the Department of Defense and General Services Administration to create set-asides for small businesses in their contracts. In addition, it maintains a national small business database that federal agencies can use to search for companies offering specific products and capabilities. The Central Contractor Registry is a dynamic marketing resource for those seeking qualified small businesses. Cont’d. May 2013

Business Articles How the SBA Can Help You Cont’d. There’s also a disadvantaged business development program to help businesses compete with non-disadvantaged small businesses on an equal basis. This program has been expanded to include minority-owned and disabled veteran-owned businesses. Advocacy The Office of Advocacy is an independent voice for small businesses, advancing their views and concerns to all branches of the federal government. Its operations are directed by the chief counsel who is appointed by the president. The office reviews proposed Congressional legislation and its regulatory effect on small businesses. It supplements these reviews with comprehensive research on the small business environment, using the results when testifying before federal and state governmental bodies and legislative committees. Advocacy attorneys seek the input of small business owners and work with federal agencies to determine how to minimize the impact of new laws and regulations. They consider and analyze alternative policies and publish their findings for public comment. They also work with state policymakers to promote regulatory flexibility and cost savings for small businesses. The office publishes a quarterly report with small business performance indicators, small business profiles for all 50 states, and the Small Business Economy report. Education & Training The SBA counsels and advises small businesses at no charge through personal meetings and via the internet. It also offers low-cost training programs designed to assist aspiring entrepreneurs and businesses that are already up and running. Its training centers are spread throughout the U.S. in over 1,800 locations. These programs provide financial management and technical assistance that are keys to successfully operating any business. The SBA also maintains associations with private organizations such as the Service Corps of Retired Executives, now known as SCORE. This nonprofit is dedicated to helping small businesses get started and grow through its mentorship and education programs. Its membership is comprised of 12,000 volunteers who have business experience in 62 industries across the country. Most services are provided free of charge or offered at a nominal cost. These include personal mentoring, confidential counseling, business newsletters and tools, online webinars, and workshops at 348 local chapters. Bottom Line The scope and breadth of SBA programs far exceed the summary contained in this article. Check sba. gov for the latest information regarding ongoing assistance programs and how you might qualify. The SBA is a valuable resource that should be an early stop for startups and entrepreneurs with ideas for new businesses. Their advice and support can help you get your business off the ground and increase your chances of success. "Supporting Over 250,000 Small Handmade Cosmetic Microbusiness and the Communities They Serve" The Handmade Cosmetic Alliance is an alliance of artisans, business owners, cosmetic and soap makers from across the country that want to preserve the freedom to produce and sell handmade soap & cosmetics in the USA The Handmade Cosmetic Alliance works with federal legislators to preserve handmade cosmetic and soap microbusinesses and the community based, main street jobs they support. The HCA has four simple messages for legislators: 1. Support the creation of a federal microbusiness definition as a small business that together with affiliates, have average annual gross receipts of two million five hundred thousand dollars ($2,500,000) or less over the previous three years, or is a manufacturer with 25 or fewer employees. 2. Support the nation’s over 250,000 handmade cosmetic companies by providing microbusiness exemptions for facility registration and fees so that these companies may continue to create local jobs and contribute to local economies. 3. Support handmade cosmetic microbusinesses by providing exemptions for regulatory paperwork which drives up the cost of doing business, making it nearly impossible to operate a profitable handmade cosmetic business. 4. Support handmade cosmetic microbusinesses by providing publicly accessible federal resources as a way to foster growth of these emerging companies in the United States.

Business Article
Clever ways to connect with your customers through email Email marketing can be one of the most cost-effective means of reaching your customers, but given that the New York Times estimates that corporate workers get at 105 emails each day, an effective strategy starts with getting your email noticed among the sea of electronic communications. Here are four clever ways to connect with your customers through email. 1. Tease with a provocative headline. An email’s subject line is akin to a headline in a newspaper article: To catch reader attention, it must be relevant, interesting, and to the point. Before you send out your next email, don’t just tell people what it is with stale phrases like “coupon inside” or, “new product announcement”; consider what the email ultimately does for the recipient. In the case of a coupon, for example, telling them the actual dollar amount they stand to save—and presenting the coupon once they open the email may be more impactful to your click through rate efficacy. Even if you’re simply sharing great “insider” content, tease them with the ultimate “payoff,” whether the information is geared toward making them feel more beautiful, creative, healthy-- or more wealthy, in the subject line. 2. Ask your readers what they think. The fact that it’s free and easy to use isn’t the only reason that social media has become a powerful form of marketing for small businesses; it has everything to do with the fact that its two-way communication facilitates critical customer relationship building that leads to loyalty, and referrals. Instead of just delivering an email and telling them your message, think about ways you can get them involved, and invite them to share opinions on the topic of conversation to other social media channels like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest or Instagram. 3. Say less, show more. You may have a lot you want to tell your audience—but consider using more white space, and fewer words. Additionally, using color to communicate a mood, and the desired call to action, can be an emotionally impactful way to reach readers through email. If your promoting a new line of product that involves exotic or exclusive ingredients, for example, enhance design elements in your email with purple to evoke such a mood. If the email message is practical in nature, such as apologizing for a customer service snafu or announcing a change in prices or policy, stick to grays, blues, and browns to communicate intellect and stability. If you want customers to buy, integrating yellow and orange hues into email design communicates a carefree and airy mood. 4. Take advantage of professional tools. The key to effective email marketing as a small business is to have a strategy and purpose to your messages, including when you send them. Though you probably don’t want to bombard customers with emails every day, you’ll benefit by building some kind of predictability to your email releases, whether they arrive in the inbox every Sunday morning, Friday afternoon, or the first of each month. If you don’t have enough worthy content to share on a regular schedule (or the time to develop it), turn to technology! Scoop.it, a content curating publishing platform, recently announced a new functionality that works in tandem with the email marketing tool MailChimp, allowing you to create professional, magazine-worthy newsletters using a variety of content from sources you select from the web—in addition to the option to include your own proprietary posts and promotions. The best part? Both offer free basic subscriptions. Manufacturing Sunscreen Products Days are getting longer, the sun is shining, temperatures are rising and it’s days like these that get people in the mood for a little sun worship. But, did you know that skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States? More than 3.5 million skin cancers in over two million people are diagnosed annually[1]. Facts like these compel the common consumer to run for the sunscreen. This causes a chain reaction because skincare companies want a piece of the action, but they also know that consumers want a sunscreen product that is “natural” and doesn’t contain chemicals of concern. It is certainly compelling for small skincare manufacturers who want to gain market share by offering “natural” sunscreen. However, use of the term “sunscreen” or similar sun protection terminology in a product’s labeling generally causes the product to be subject to Food & Drug Administration (FDA) regulation as a drug. Some ingredients approved as “sunscreens” may have alternate purposes in a product, such as titanium dioxide to make the product white. To avoid consumer misunderstanding, if a cosmetic product contains a sunscreen ingredient and uses the term “sunscreen” or similar sun protection terminology anywhere in its labeling, the term must be qualified, in accordance with 21 CFR 700.35(b), by describing the benefit to the cosmetic product provided by the sunscreen ingredient (for example, “Contains a sunscreen to protect product color.”). Otherwise, the product may be subject to regulation as a drug (21 CFR 700.35)[2]. There are two basic types of sunscreen products on the market: products that penetrate the outermost layer of skin to absorb ultraviolet rays, and products which coat the surface of the skin to act as physical barriers to ultraviolet rays. Both of these types are rated with a sun protection factor (SPF), which lets the consumer know how much protection against UVB rays the product provides. Any product that declares a SPF on the label, qualifies as a sunscreen and is beholden to FDA requirements for Over The Counter (OTC) drug products. OTC monographs define the safety, effectiveness, and labeling of OTC active ingredients. If a drug is in the OTC final monograph, companies can manufacture and market that OTC product without FDA preapproval[3]. Regulatory hurdles pose the greatest barrier to entry into the Sunscreen Manufacturing industry[4]. In order to sell a sunscreen product, your company must follow one of two avenues: To manufacture and sell your own sunscreen, you must follow the Food & Drug Administration guidelines for OTC drug products: • FDA Registration: Sunscreen manufacturers must register with the FDA, work under GMP guidelines, and update their list of drug products twice annually. • Labeling rules: All sunscreen ingredients must be listed separately in the ingredient list under “active ingredients” together with the concentration used in the product. • Validation of claims: Claims made on the label suggesting that the product offers sun protection (UVA and/or UVB) must be substantiated with clinical and/or in-vitro testing.

Naturally Minded Article Manufacturing Sunscreen Products Cont’d. Alternately, there are numerous private label manufacturers who can manufacture sunscreen products according to FDA guidelines and package those products under your company name. This process ensures the following: • FDA Registration: Sunscreen “distributors” are not required to register with the FDA. This is the responsibility of the sunscreen manufacturer. As long as you are distributing a sunscreen manufactured by a qualified contract manufacturer, it is that manufacturers responsibility to register the manufacturing facility and the formula. They must work under GMP guidelines and update their list of drug products twice annually.[5] • Labeling rules: All sunscreen ingredients must be listed separately in the ingredient list under “active ingredients” together with the concentration used in the product. Your contract manufacturer should provide you with labels that follow FDA labeling guidelines for OTC drugs. • Validation of claims: It is the responsibility of the contract manufacturer to ensure that the claims made on the label suggesting that the product offers sun protection (UVA and/or UVB) are substantiated with clinical and/or in-vitro testing. Your contract manufacturer should be able to provide you with documentation corroborating any product claims. Offering sunscreen products is not an unattainable goal, but it is imperative that your small business be aware of the requirements prior to marketing this class of products. Failure to comply with FDA guidelines may result in regulatory action including (but not limited to) your product being classified as misbranded, mandatory product recalls and fines.[6] References:

Wholesale Supplies Plus at the HSCG Conference! Are you going to the HSCG Conference in mid-May? We hope you are, because we’ll see you there! Wholesale Supplies Plus has a lot of great things going on at the conference and we’re so excited to share them with our fellow soapers! Every break, we’ll be doing different demos and a few lucky audience members are certain to get samples of the many creations we cook up. We’ll have discounts AND special gifts for those who place their orders with us at the show. There will be contests each day and a grand prize winner at the end of the show. Plus, Wholesale Supplies Plus is sponsoring Friday night’s event which will be a networking event mixed with a fun-filled “Quest for the Best” game show night with gift certificates awarded to the winners! If you can’t make it, be sure to subscribe to our Twitter feed (@WSPnews) and ‘like’ us on Facebook. We’ll be doing live updates from the show. We’ll also have a fun way for people to show off their soap creations and give their products the ‘Star’ Treatment. Make sure to stop by the Wholesale Supplies Plus booth with your favorite soaps to see what that means and check out all of the great demos, discounts and goodies we’ll have to offer! Are you a member of HSCG yet? Join today and start saving! Wholesale Supplies Plus offers HSMG Vendor Members 2% off online orders at www.wholesalesuppliesplus.com! Looking forward to seeing you there! Raleigh, here we come!
