It's March, so it must be Spring! We have come through the cold anddarkness of winter, and we look forward to brighter and warmer days. We expect to see flowers blooming, trees budding. In nature, it seems that new life always emerges in the spring. Plants, tree or shrubs that were mercilessly pruned, or damaged by storms, or appeared completely lifeless during winter’s icy grip, will emerge victorious once more.

Reluctant gardeners will soon find themselves overwhelmed by the abundance of new growth if they don’t keep up!
God’s gift of new life to us, of course, is not an annual event. The Bible reminds us that “the steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning. ” And Jesus himself said that he came to earth so that we “can have real and eternal life, more and better life than ever dreamed of. ” Other ways of understanding this include fullness of life, or abundant life.
Jesus also speaks of eternal life. This is not the kind of life that blossoms in the spring but fades by winter, but is something profoundly different. He speaks of life unending, life eternal. The apostle Paul wrote to the Christians in Rome that “eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” is “the free gift of God. ” This isn’t something we can earn for ourselves, but it is a gift, freely given. This is what Jesus meant when he said “Come to me, all who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. ” This is the only way we can know the comforting presence and the life-changing power of God in our lives.
