News from King’s Baptist Church

Recently we have been thinking about what it means to be fruitful, to have a fruitful life. Some people may think the fruit of a good life is money, education, popularity, status, success, skills, connections, possessions, or fame.

Jesus said we are like branches connected to a vine. So, when the branches remain connected into the vine, they will produce grapes. And Jesus said that if we remain, or abide, in him, we will also bear fruit— the fruit that God wants us to produce. We might say that fruitfulness is the inevitable outcome of an interior spiritual life with Jesus.

Now Jesus also said that there are false or fake ‘vines’ that we might be attached to, or attracted to. Even religion can be ‘wrong’ . We can be consumers of religious events and practices, yet we are spiritually empty and have no good fruit to show. Our ‘vine’ should be Jesus alone.

What is key here is to remain, abide, or dwell permanently. We can treat Jesus like the corner shop—convenient and accessible when we want something. Jesus invites us to abide in him, t to maintain life in unbroken fellowship with him. This is a constant living relationship, not merely reaching out to him when we have a need. Jesus calls us to a higher life with a deeper connection.

Author Myles Monroe wrote these words: “ …Don’t fall for the limitations of the world—the lies and deceptions of the lower nature. Find your Source and get connected. Then stay connected. God has chosen you to go and bear fruit—fruit that will last. Abide in Christ, and the Father will give you whatever you wish. Refuse to live below your privileged potential. Reach for the fruit that are still within the branches of your life. Drink deep from the vine and let your life feed others. ”

May we all abide in Jesus, and may we all know the comforting presence and the life-changing power of God.
