Welcome As the Event Chair for Bellefonte Victorian Christmas, on behalf of Historic Bellefonte, Inc. and the BVC Committee I would like to welcome you to the 32nd Annual Bellefonte Victorian Christmas celebration. This holiday event has been one of my family’s most cherished Christmas traditions. My children grew up participating in concerts, dressing in Victorian period dress, and now my grandchildren are continuing to build their own lasting memories by taking part in this event. I have a plaque on the wall of my home that states “Memories Are Made in Bellefonte.” It’s these memories that have kept me focused on what is good for the event and the community as a whole. I wanted to create an event that everyone from every economic background could enjoy, an event where all who attend can have a grand time, building memories during their stay in beautiful Victorian Bellefonte. As I assumed this responsibility, I wanted to keep the event festivities downtown or nearby so you can easily walk or ride to every venue – not worrying about where to park or if you’d have enough time to enjoy all that we offer. I hope you will spend time in our fine shops, dine at our restaurants, stay in our beautiful B&B’s, visit the Bellefonte Art Museum and the Historical Library, and soak up the history and architecture. I hope that this Special Guide will help you take advantage of all the venues and 4

activities Bellefonte Victorian Christmas offers. This year I would like to welcome back one of our newest highlights, United Way’s Festival of Trees. Make sure you take the time to catch the special FREE Festival of Trees shuttle at the High School or on the Diamond in front of the Courthouse to experience this winter wonderland of trees at the Central PA Institute of Science and Technology. My greatest joy this past five years as Event Chair has been working with the best group of individuals that I’ve ever worked with on any project. The members of the Bellefonte Victorian Committee are hardworking, tireless, and selfless individuals who care about the community as much, if not more, than I do. I have also found joy having such great support from businesses, professionals, individuals, shop keepers, restaurateurs, and community organizations who have not only worked together but have also provided financial support. This community as a whole has helped make this event so exceptional this year and every year. I would also like to thank our umbrella organization, Historic Bellefonte, Inc., the Bellefonte Borough, and the Bellefonte School District for their support before, during, and after the event. What a joy it is to live in a diverse community

that can also work together for the common good. Last but not least, I could not have done any of this without my husband, my children, and my grandchildren. Without their support I would not have been able to experience the joy of creating an event that will bring years of lasting memories to all who visit Victorian Bellefonte each holiday season. 2013 Bellefonte Victorian Christmas A Heartfelt Holiday Hometown Celebration Some say “tis not the season” until they experience Bellefonte Victorian Christmas. This gentle and merry weekend of old-fashioned holiday entertainment, shopping, and social events embodies what’s good and wholesome about this holiday of all holidays. The 32nd Annual Bellefonte Victorian Christmas is Friday, December 13 through Sunday, December 15, with A Gaslight Gala to kick off the weekend on Thursday, December 12.

Opening Ceremonies

Opening ceremonies are Friday evening. You are invited to gather at the Bellefonte Elementary School at 6:30 p.m. You’ll be greeted on the front steps by Mr. Dickens and the Bellefonte Community Band. Enter the auditorium for entertainment by the Nittany Knights, the Bellefonte Elementary School Fourth- and Fifth-grade Choir, St. John’s Elementary School Choir, and some other special performances, including

Entertainment at the teas include appearances by the Dickens characters and local musicians. Santa on Saturday morning, the Santa House from noon to four both days on the Diamond, craft activities and model train display at the middle school, and a number of events at the Centre County Library and Historical Museum. The breakfast and free activities are sponsored by the Bellefonte Kiwanis and SPE Federal Credit Union.

Arts & Crafts at Four Locations

Dozens of artists, artisans, and crafters will be displaying their wares for holiday gifting. A lovely place to buy handmade gifts, the Victorian Christmas Arts & Crafts Show is presented in cooperation with: Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association and The Bellefonte Victorian Christmas Committee. Be sure to stop by the Bellefonte Middle School, our largest arts and crafts location, before or after taking the free shuttle downtown. In addition to 25+ vendors at the Middle School, 25+ at the Bellefonte YMCA on High Street, and more than 20 at the Elementary School, we have invited more artists and crafters to set up on East High Street, on either side of the court house. That area will be closed to traffic. There are food concessions at the schools and YMCA; Kettle Korn, and Scott’s Roasters on the Street.

Homes Tour

Tour eight beautifully decorated homes at your own pace, in any order you choose, between 2 p.m. and 7 12

p.m. Saturday. This popular event is presented in cooperation with the Bellefonte Women’s Club and the Homes Tour Committee. Pre-sale tickets and brochures with a full listing of homes on tour will be available at Plumbs Drug Store, Woodring’s Bellefonte and State College, and the Train Station in Bellefonte. Tickets will be available the day of the tour at the HBI booth and at each home. The cost is $15 for adults and $5 for children under five. You are also invited to stop by the Victorian Rose Gift Shop on North Allegheny Street for a cookie reception provided by the Bellefonte Woman’s Club and the Bellefonte Victorian Christmas Committee during the homes tour. The shop is located on the site of the boyhood homestead of Governor Andrew Gregg Curtin.

Music, Music, Music

Carols and hymns, quintets and choirs, brass and bells – the sounds of Christmas can be heard all around town from the Opening Ceremony through

the grand finale Community Choir Concert Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Bellefonte High Auditorium. All concerts are free. Look in this guide for the schedule of performances Saturday and Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church, the organ recital Sunday at the Presbyterian Church, and the Bellefonte Community Band Concert Saturday at the Elementary School. The Centre County Historical Museum offers free concerts, too, including piano concerts and childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s carol sing.

Festival of Trees

The whole family will enjoy the Festival of Trees, presented Thursday through Sunday at CPI on Harrison Road. You may vote for your favorite trees and the proceeds go to the 37 member agencies of the Centre County United Way. Cost is $2 for adults, $1 for children. This event is a stop on the free shuttle from the downtown Diamond and from the High School.

You are welcome to stroll the decorated streets of Bellefonte and enjoy all our town has to offer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; good restaurants, many intriguing shops, and plenty of Christmas cheer. Enjoy Bellefonteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rich heritage and architecture during a walking tour commencing at the Centre County Courthouse and sponsored by Bellefonte Historical & Cultural Association both Saturday and Sunday. The Centre County Library and Historical Museum and the Bellefonte Art Museum are both open for free tours and holiday events Saturday and Sunday.

Here’s a lovely way to explore our town. Regularly scheduled horse-drawn carriage rides provide a unique experience the whole family will enjoy. Make sure to get tickets early; the schedule fills up quickly. Carriage rides depart from the Brockerhoff on Allegheny Street. Tickets may be purchased in the Brockerhoff foyer or in advance from Melissa. hershey@gmail.com. The schedule, when the weather is good, is Friday evening, December 13, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, December 14, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sunday, December 15, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $8 for adults, children five and under free.

The Civil War re-enactors are back, too. Battery C will be in front of the Court House. Battery B will be strolling the streets and visiting some of the venues.

Stop in at the Train Station for tickets and schedules for the Santa Express train rides scheduled for the following weekend – Friday, December 20 through Sunday, December 22.

Historic Downtown Walking Tour

Check out the entries and winners in the annual Gingerbread House Contest, with categories for adults, teens, children, and seniors. They are at the Diamond Deli at 103 North Allegheny Street, starting December 8. Winners will be announced at the Opening Ceremonies. Mr. Dickens, Ebenezer Scrooge, Bob & Mrs. Cratchet and the Fezzwigs are returning to Bellefonte, to name a few. Play along as they engage you, the good citizens of Bellefonte and beloved visitors, in various conversations and charitable works. Be sure to hail them and each other with a hearty “Good Day” and a heartfelt “Happy Christmas!” The Dickens Troupe is sponsored in part by Hoag’s Catering, Dotts Hamilton, Inc., and BHCA. 14

Our town has a long heritage plus many architectural gems. Join a guided walking tour of Bellefonte’s downtown, rich in history and architecture. This Historic Walking Tour includes narrative of legends, styles, and the history of design periods. Tours are given rain, snow, or shine, so dress for the weather. Tours depart from the Centre County Courthouse at 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday and are sponsored by the Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association.

This event has been such a big hit that we have three sittings to accommodate everyone â&#x20AC;&#x201C; at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tea is at Bellefonte Art Museum, 133 N. Allegheny Street and the cost is just $10 per child. Elementary Students Create Wreaths To Benefit Easter Seals

The award-winning Bellefonte Elementary School students have been raising money for the Easter Seals Million Penny Drive for more than 15 years! The effort has grown each year and various projects have been added so the students can raise as much money as possible. After Thanksgiving break until the last day before Christmas break, they have a number of holiday projects. They have a classroom door decorating contest and the kids create and sell Christmas cards. Bellefonte Victorian Christmas. Each classroom and some of the staff come up with a theme and decorate a wreath. These wreaths will be displayed in the lobby of the elementary school the weekend of Victorian Christmas, where visitors will have the opportunity to bid on their favorites. At the end of the weekend, the highest bidder for each wreath gets to take their wreath home. Last year the lottery ticket wreath decorated by the elementary school’s kitchen staff brought in $51.The wreath sale raised more than $500 from the wreath auction alone! Their hard work on all the year’s fundraising events allowed them to donate more than $5,000 to Easter Seals. So when you stop by the Bellefonte Elementary School for the Victorian Christmas Arts & Craft Show venue, look for the wreaths in lobby and of course feel free to bid on your favorite wreath and help Support Easter Seals.

Dozens Put Hearts & Time into Planning The Dedicated Volunteers for Victorian Christmas The Bellefonte Victorian Christmas Committee, headed by Sally Houser and made up of 17 chairmen and coordinators, meets monthly each February through May, taking off June and July, and meets again in August right up to December’s event. The BVC committee takes the rest of December and January off and starts all over again in February for the next year’s event. Downtown decorating takes place the Sunday before Thanksgiving with Decorating Committee Co-Chairs, Joe and Virginia Gassner, supervising the preparations, cutting of the live greens, and fluffing the bows the night before. Joe and Virginia start their decorating day about 4 a.m. by laying out all the greens and bows. Then they meet with all volunteers Sunday morning at 7 a.m. at the Bellefonte Moose Lodge #206 for breakfast provided by lodge members and volunteers. At 8 a.m., on the Diamond in front of the courthouse, volunteers and the BVC committee members get last-minute instructions and then team up to decorate 136 lampposts downtown and at Talleyand Park, decorate at the Train Station, and festoon three bridges with greens and bows. The Bellefonte Borough puts all the lights on the trees and adds a tree on the Diamond the week before decorating day. The tree is usually donated by a member of the community.

The Undine Fire Company decorates the front of the Centre County Courthouse with greens and bows. CPI students bring Santa’s House and put it together on the Diamond so it can be decorated and made ready for Santa. The Centre County Commissioners also provide labor for the day. Once the decorating is complete, Sunday ends with a wonderful Thanksgiving luncheon with turkey and all the trimmings provided by the Bellefonte Elks Lodge #1094. An annual grant from Bellefonte Elks Lodge’s Garver Fund partially funds the purchase of the live greens and bows. The week after decorating day, the Bellefonte Senior High School Art Class under the direction of Art Teacher Meg Barton paints the windows at many of the town’s businesses. It takes many hours, generous donations, and dozens of volunteers behind the scenes to create Bellefonte Victorian Christmas. Thanks to everyone who helps, donates, and visits our fair town – making this celebration an outstanding Centre County tradition for more than 30 years.

The Joyous Sounds of Christmas Free Concerts All Weekend

Music is one of the joys of the holidays. Carolers and choirs, bands and soloists, pianists and quartets – Bellefonte will ring out with music from the first note of the Opening Ceremony through the stirring finale of the Victorian Christmas Community Choir Concert Sunday evening. All of these musical presentations are free – and promise to raise the spirit of Christmas in every heart. As you reach the Opening Ceremony at the Bellefonte Elementary School, Mr.

A perennial favorite on the Homes Tour, this impressive red brick Burnside/McCoy house was built for Judge Thomas Burnside in 1869. Named Pisgah, a reference to the mountain from which Moses was allowed to view the Promised Land, the house sits on a rise overlooking Spring Creek. A summer kitchen and servants’ quarters¸ now converted to a caretaker’s cottage, share the enormous landscaped lot that fills the entire block between West Linn and West Curtin streets. The property is most easily approached from West Curtin Street. The Burkes, who have graciously welcomed visitors to their house each Christmas, have carefully and lovingly filled the 16-room mansion with appropriate

Mike and Beth Brown 231 N. Spring Street

This year’s tour-goers are in for a special treat – touring the spacious, five-bay Federalstyle house owned by Mike and Beth Brown. The 16-room dwelling was built in 1858 by William Tripple, grandfather of Jack Yeager. Jack and his wife, Eliza Curtin Yeager, reared a family in his grandfather’s beautiful frame house. The Tripple house stands on one of the first lots laid out in the borough of Bellefonte. On this lot in 1797, John Wall erected the fifth house built in the borough and behind it, a blacksmith shop constructed of logs. Wall twice represented the area in the State Legislature. In 1939, Jack Yeager began restored the blacksmith shop. It stands at the rear of the large lot along with a beautiful sunken garden.

In 2009, an extensive restoration of the 1858 house that replaced John Wall’s earlier dwelling, was undertaken by Olin Blankenship. He replaced the roof, removed aluminum siding from the exterior walls, repaired and repainted the original clapboards, and rehung the shutters. He even laid historically appropriate slate walks around the house and extensively restored the house’s entire interior.

Our modest home is full of “special gems.” The office room was the original home – the oldest structure built on the Howard Turnpike, according to a book left by a previous owner. The office has an original empire stove in the fireplace. Old latch doors are featured in the house and closets. The wall in the waiting room is stone and the floors are circa 1900. The break room walls are stone. The back wall is an old summer kitchen complete with a steel rod for pots. When renovating, we found deer bones in the floors. The wood joists are original, and when we renovated we used those joists for a shelf and wall. The bathroom has a stone wall and low wood joists. We have a book that depicts the

Built in 1908, this gold brick Queen Anne Victorian is spacious and welcoming. Although the kitchen and baths have been greatly modified over the years, the massive front door and grand entry are still original, as are the living and dining rooms, which both have beautiful gas fireplaces. The home has eleven-foot ceilings, an original chandelier in the entryway, and a front and a back staircase. The second floor of the house is almost two entirely separate wings, separated by a door.The floors on the first floor are beautiful narrow oak hardwood. Also of note are the multi-paned windows. The home was purchased in May, 2013, by local attorney, Stephanie Cooper and her mother, Wendy Cooper. Stephanie and her fiancé, Gary Robinson, were married just a month later in the back yard, which has a flagstone patio, and, in the spring, beautiful perennials. Three generations now occupy the large house, which is filled with children and pets, yet still has enough rooms for the adults to have some quiet space. In researching the deeds to the home, Stephanie discovered that, through the years, it has been owned primarily by women, certainly somewhat of a curiosity in the early 20th century, but a tradition that lives on to the current day. Additionally, Stephanie is the second attorney to live in the house; from 1928 to 1951, the house was owned by M. Ward Fleming, a Bellefonte attorney who served as both a bankruptcy trustee and a judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Centre County for ten years, and who was a President of the Centre County Bar

In 1883, John Ardell, a Bellefonte lumberman, constructed a magnificent house of the finest local hardwoods, including chestnut clapboards, black walnut front door and banister-railing, poplar pocket doors with the original hand stippling, and red and white oak floors. The style was dubbed “painted lady” by Victorians. Bob and Tami Schuster purchased the home in September 2007 and commissioned a meticulous restoration which included scraping over 100 years of paint off the chestnut siding and repainting the exterior in glorious “painted lady” colors. The couple met while she played Eliza Doolittle in a production of My Fair Lady where Bob was designing and constructing the sets, so their choice of a name for their Bed and Breakfast establishment is a tribute to the “long run” of their romance. The interior restoration includes many

electrical and plumbing upgrades along with exquisitely tiled bathrooms that add elegance to the beautifully furnished and decorated guest rooms. Tami discovered many interior shutters and some original doors in the old barn behind the house. The couple restored them as well as the pine floors, where needed. When you enter Our Fair Lady, you will feel right at home and discover the harmony of Old World Charm and modern amenities, carefully blended in this simply elegant Second-Empire Victorian home.

Village & Train Display at the Home of Jerry & Janice Davis 1326 Joanna Drive (Directions Provided, Drive to) This Christmas favorite is large display of a Department 56 Village, along with the train that encompasses one wall of our sunroom. This 38-piece village is the “Christmas in the City Series”, that features mountains, trees, sled riding hills, streams, foot bridges, water fountain, park, street lights, vehicles, and much more. As you stand and look at the scenes you’re taken back to another time, a time when things were simpler and shopping in the city

was still apart of everyday life. Let your thoughts go, and you might even imagine this was Bellefonte of the 1930’s and 40’s Christmas in our home wouldn’t be complete without this display. We enjoy it from the moment we erect it in early November, until taken down in late January. John & Cora Decker 505 East Curtin Street

This lovely four-story home, at one time with a yard surrounded with 90 lilac bushes, was built in 1937 by Lewis Smith, a prolific Bellefonte home builder. His son, Gene Smith, stated in the recent WPSU production of Our Town Bellefonte that over 40 years his father built more than 100 homes in and around Bellefonte. A 1937 quarter is embedded in the home’s banister, signifying when it was built. The original owners were Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Quigley. There is a story that Mrs. Quigley walked in the surrounding mountains choosing some of the limestone for the outside of her home. Another interesting story was that Mr. Quigley shot a groundhog from the upper porch of the fourstory home. When Judge Brown and his family lived there, the back yard was a baseball field for many years where as many as 12 or 14 boys would spend many hours in earnest games.

There were marks in the lawn where the bases had been long after the games were done. You’ll find the boys’ retired jerseys, bats, and gloves in the attic museum. For decades children and friends have enjoyed the spacious yard and three porches for games and fun no matter what the weather. Owners through the years and the newest owners, John & Cora Decker, have redone and updated the home, complete with marble floors in the entrance hall.

Daniel Hastings Mansion 254 N. Allegheny Street Corner of N. Allegheny & Lamb Streets

The Hastings Mansion dominates the corner of North Allegheny and Lamb streets. It was built by John Lane in the 1890s. It was purchased by Governor Daniel Hastings, who had the mansion expanded, adding a south wing in the style of the original Governor’s Mansion in Harrisburg that has since been lost to fire. There have been numerous stories about the mansion and the spirits that are said to roam the halls. But the most interesting story to come from the Hastings Mansion is about an old grandfather clock that has since disappeared into history. The clock was built

with a realistic human face within the glass of the face of the clock. If a person stared into the face long enough, the clock face was rumored to wink at the person who gazed into its eyes. In the 1900s the 10,367 square feet of living space was converted into eight uniquely different one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Fancifully Decorated Trees Adorn CPI Festival of Trees Benefits Local United Way Bellefonte Victorian Christmas welcomes the United Wayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Festival of Trees as part of the Victorian Christmas weekend. The 19th annual Festival of Trees is December 12 to 15 at the Central PA Institute of Science & Technology, Harrison Road. This is the second year the event will be managed by the Centre County United Way with all proceeds benefiting the 37 United Way Partner Agencies.Â These agencies provide health and human services to our neighbors across the county. Local businesses and organizations purchase and decorate lives trees, which are then displayed during the event. Visitors pay a small fee to walk through the venue and admire each treeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s unique decorations. Live entertainment for all ages and craft vendors will be on hand to add to the

holiday mood.
