Editor’s Prologue

This issue is dedicated to both Easter and Earth Day, each a reminder of what the good Lord has given us to be thankful for. Easter is a private celebration for those with faith. If you are looking for neighbors to share Good Friday or Easter Sunday with, see the Easter Event Calendar.

Earth Day is more public. At the risk of being trite, every day should be Earth Day. Performing a small act of thoughtfulness every day would keep our planet neat and vital. Plant a tree, recycle, join a clean-up crew. PennDOT, Bald Eagle State Park, and ClearWater Conservancy have teams you can join.

On the first Earth Day in 1970, my family and a classmate cleaned up a halfmile of local roadway. We filled a utility trailer with trash. This weekend, as a longtime Adopt-a-Highway volunteer, my niece and I will clean up two miles near my home. I imagine we’ll only fill a few garbage bags. Though a great improvement, it’s disheartening that there are those who still choose to litter.

Other news in this issue includes a fishing derby in a local swimming pool, an upcoming dance event that benefits cancer research, a new hometown hero, plenty of school news, cat and dog charity events, and a nostalgic column about spring’s sunniest blooms.

A reader wrote that the What’s Happening calendar change – from strictly chronological to event categories, made it less convenient to discover what to do on a certain date or weekend. Your comments are also welcomed. It’s all about making your community newspaper the best it can be for its readers.

Until now, The Gazette has rather scrupulously stayed away from politics.

However, our public servants do make a difference in our everyday lives. It’s up to us to choose wisely and direct their actions for the common good. In that spirit, I am offering any candidate that desires to serve Centre County to send voters a letter via The Gazette, 450 words or fewer, that will be printed in the May 6 issue.

We will only print positive letters – written by the candidate, presenting constructive ideas. No mention of opponents, no third-party letters, no negativity of any kind. The Gazette will not endorse or comment. Our only goal is to provide a way for you to become better informed before marking your ballot May 17. If this proves useful to readers, perhaps we’ll repeat the offer in November.

May your holiday weekend be peaceful and satisfying – shared with a few friends, loved ones, and good neighbors.

Centre Count y Schools Small Children, Big Impact: Grace Lutheran Preschool & Kindergarten Raises Funds for MDA

Experience teaches us not to underestimate the power of children. With strong leaders and clear goals, they can accomplish almost anything. After learning about muscular dystrophy and other challenges during Disability Awareness Week, children at Grace Lutheran Preschool & Kindergarten (GLPK) turned words into action as they focused their energies on the school’s Muscular Dystrophy Hop-a-thon.

Determination and a desire to help others resulted in the school’s approximately 120 children raising $2,751.

Carol Lebold, special project coordinator for the school, informed and inspired the children through a series of activities from March 28 through April 1. Daily programs revealed how children with varied disabilities address difficult challenges while emphasizing that they are just like other people, wanting to live full lives and have fun. Students gained insights into overcoming diverse limitations by painting with their mouths during art class, riding in (or pushing) a wheelchair, moving (sightlessly) with the guidance of teachers, etc.

They discussed what all children have in common and can do together despite various limitations. They also talked about how to be a friend to children whose hindrances make participation in everyday activities difficult.

Elks Honor BEA Students

The Bellefonte Elks recently presented awards for its most recent Students of the Month honors for the Bald Eagle School District. There were four honorees, Kayla Confer, Tyler Greer, Mallory Leupold, and Nicholas Taylor.

A school-wide assembly began each day of Disability Awareness Week, introducing children to diverse limitations, focusing in particular on challenges faced by persons with muscular dystrophy. Classroom and enrichment activities such as art, music, and signing for the deaf reinforced the daily lessons.

The children were inspired to channel their energy to raise money for the MDA through the school hop-a-thon.

Students asked friends and relatives to pledge money for the number of hops each child could muster in two minutes. On the day of the hop-a-thon, teachers recorded every jump. The money they raised goes toward the purchase of wheelchairs and helps to provide camp scholarships for students with muscular dystrophy.

During the past five years, GLPK has raised a total of $12,300. Through this project, Grace Lutheran Preschool & Kindergarten students continue to meet the challenge of the MDA theme song that echoes through the halls: Hop, hop, hop in the Hop-a-thon; help, help, help muscles to be strong!

Never doubt – small children can have a big impact.

Kayla Confer is the daughter of Jeffrery and Xochi Confer of Bellefonte. She excelled in volleyball as well as serving in many committees such as Varsity Club, Spanish Club, and Senior Executive Committee.

Tyler Greer, son of Bill and Dorothy Greer of Port Matilda, is the president of Drama Club and the Tech Team. He participates in community theatre.

State Nutrition Association Manager of the Year

By Julie Miller STATE COLLEGE – Theresa Ganow, Food Service Manager of Radio Park Elementary School, was selected as 2011 School Nutrition Association of Pennsylvania’s Manager (SNAPA) of the Year. She has shown dedication to her school’s nutritional program and has exemplified leadership and guidance throughout her career.

According to SNAPA, “The SNAPA Manager of the Year award was created to recognize an outstanding school foodservice manager who exhibits an extraordinary commitment to the school food-service program.”

Megan Schaper, Food Service Director for State College

Area School District, says, “Theresa is respected by her comanagers who appreciate her thoughtful contribution to problem solving at monthly managers meetings.”

Schaper mentions that the Health Department has commended Theresa for the school’s safe food handling practices, and in 2009 the Pennsylvania Department of Education complimented Theresa for an outstanding lunch program.

Theresa will be presented with her award at the 2011 School Nutrition Association Appreciate Banquet on August 1 in Lancaster.

McDonald’s Offers Grants to Middle School Teachers

For the 17th consecutive year, local McDonald’s restaurants are offering MAC Grants to help area middle school teachers to Make Activities Count for their students.

McDonald’s recognizes that lessons often become more meaningful when demonstrated with hands-on experiences. The MAC Grants program provides financial support to help teachers supplement regular classroom lesson plans with activities the school budget may not allow. To date, regional McDonald’s restaurants have awarded more than $1.4 million to ­­­support hands-on learning in middle school classrooms through the MAC Grants program.

Fifth-, sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade teachers may apply for grants of up to $500 for interesting and educational projects to help learning come alive in their classrooms. Past grants have subsidized math-friendly robots, literary festivals, crime lab investigations, mock Olympic games, and even the construction of on-campus greenhouses.

Teachers should apply online at www.mcdtoday.com/mac.php. Completed applications must be submitted by August 1, 2011. A limited number of grant recipients will be announced early in the 2011-12 school year.

Nicholas Taylor, son of Douglas and Marianne Taylor of Bellefonte, has excelled in many sports for BEA including soccer, football, and wrestling. He has been a class officer and is in the National Honor Society.

Bellefonte Student Group to Hold Benefit Dinner

BELLEFONTE – Senior Institute is hosting a charity dinner for local toddler Tony Danneker.

The Hometown Picnic will be held on Wednesday, May 4, at Faith United Methodist Church, behind Roger’s Stadium in Bellefonte at 512 Hughes Street.

The picnic costs $7 for adults and $3 for children. Dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will include a cheesesteak or hot sausage sub, potato salad or coleslaw, hot and cold beverages, and homemade desserts.

Takeouts will also be available.

“We’re working hard to create a fun environment and a delicious meal,” said senior Brianna Blair. “This philanthropy is a great experience for all of us in the class.”

Tony is the son of Michael and Erica Danneker of Bellefonte. Michael is a Spring Township Police Sergeant who volunteers with Bellefonte football. Erica is a special education teacher for State College Area School District.

“The Danneker family has contributed a lot to the community,” said senior

Lauren Laubscher. “This is our chance to say thanks.”

Tony was born with cystic fibrosis, a disorder that causes lung damage and nutritional deficiencies. The family faces ongoing testing and medical expenses, and the baby would benefit from the purchase of therapeutic equipment.

Students began planning the spring charity as early as November, when the class did teambuilding activities at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center.

“Senior Institute’s like a family,” said senior Josh Carroll. “They’ve had successful events in the past, and we’re hoping ours will surpass previous charities.”

Senior Institute is a unique program at Bellefonte Area High School bringing together philanthropy and the study of both art and English. The class is taught by Mr. Erich May and Ms. Meg Barton.

Centre Count y Schools BEA Botball Team competes in Fairfax, VA

The Bald Eagle High School Botball team competed in the 2011 Greater D.C. Botball Regional Tournament, which took place on April 9 in Fairfax, VA. Thirty-eight registered teams from Virginia, Maryland, Washington D.C., and Pennsylvania entered the competition. The teams were from public and private schools, and student-run clubs outside of school. Students participating from Bald Eagle Area were Dylan Bathurst, Connor Bravis, Mike Ciancarelli, Kyle Lucas, Mallory Leupold, and Erin Nilson. Advisors for the group are Sharon Nilson and Vaughn Donmoyer.

The Botball Educational Robotics Program gives students skills, experience, and opportunities to succeed as they work in teams to design, build and program a pair of autonomous robots for regional and international competitions. In this year’s competition, the game was about an environmentally friendly airport renovation. Here is a synopsis of the game:

Botville International Airport is experiencing massive growth due to the green-energy plan instituted two years ago.

Now the airport is joining in with the environmental effort.

The planes currently at the airport need to leave, for safety reasons, during upgrades. All of the unclaimed luggage must be loaded into the matching baggage carts and moved to the hanger for storage. All of the airplanes need to be taxied to the runway in preparation for takeoff. All of the bio-fuels need to be moved from the manufacturing facility next to the runway to the fuel tanks on the tank farms located near the hangars. Finally, the new control tower needs to be erected on the tarmac and air traffic controller Botguy needs to be moved from the terminal to the top of the tower to direct flight patterns.

The students first constructed their game board and then they started to build their robots out of Lego’s. They also start the programming module. Programming is done with “Interactive C” which is a programming language that the CBC controller understands. An example of some simple code is:

The above code would move the robot forward and then backward. In order to program their robots, the students needed to learn some of the basic coding language. AO = All Off, MAV=Move at Velocity, MRP=Move Relative Position, SLEEP (2.0) = sleeps the motors for 2 seconds.

There are a lot of basic codes the students can use to make their robots move forward, backward, stop and make their arms go up and down, and grab objects. It takes time to program. The students need to think a step ahead at all times and think of the various ways the robot could move. In this particular game scenario, the students could have used a camera mounted on the robot to find the different colored objects on the board and perform certain tasks. The team earns points when each object on the board is moved appropriately.

It is up to each team how they want to build their robots; they are given the robotics parts 6 weeks prior to the competition and need to complete certain goals and meet deadlines set by the Kiss Institute of Practical Robotics (KIPR).

The Bald Eagle team assigned specific people to complete each task. The robot

is totally autonomous, which means it runs by code – there is no one controlling it. The teams must do all their own work, including documentation, engineering, programming, overall testing, and Research and Development.

The years that I spent being a member of the PTA never involved the drama that Ellen Meister has written about in her debut novel, Secret Confessions of the Applewood PTA. That is a good thing.

Maddie, Ruth, and Lisa belong to the Applewood PTA. At first they are not necessarily close friends, but when it is announced that the Applewood Elementary School has been selected to be the location of an upcoming movie starring George Clooney, they find a common goal – and enemy.

Ruth is part of the new wealth in town. Her husband had been on the brink of making his fortune when he had a stroke. On coming out of a coma, his first word was, “Sue.” The nurses thought that he was asking for a woman, but he had been a lawyer and his wife knew what he meant. The settlement moved them to the richest neighborhood in town.

Maddie is feeling that her husband has lost interest in her. He is busy with his job and she believes that he may be having an affair. Her marriage is in trouble and she needs a project. Whether that project is an affair of her own or the in fighting of the PTA will be her big concern.

Lisa is the only one of the three who seems to have it all: a devoted husband, beautiful children, and a large, gracious home. One day, Lisa’s alcoholic mother shows up on her doorstep and we learn why Lisa works so hard at creating the perfect life for herself.

The women have to form a relationship to make the film company pick their school as the location for George Clooney’s movie. If their school is selected, the film company will build the sports complex that the community needs.

Potentially dangerous affairs, marriage woes, the appearance of an old flame, embarrassing family members, a little larceny, and maybe a bit of blackmail will help to form a firm friendship of the three women.

If all of this sounds like your favorite soap opera, you may be right. It is very close to a “desperate housewife” type of plot, full of sex, cat fights, friendship, and women searching for happiness. Meister keeps the novel from being trite by making her characters more than stereotypes of themselves.

The book is laced with humor and gives us a group of women with spunk who learn how important our female friends are – even if they themselves are a little flawed.

It was a good vacation read.

Hundred Cat Foundation Conducts Neutering Clinic

POTTER TOWNSHIP – On February 7, 2005, Donna Herrmann was working with an animal-rescue organization which had been summoned to a house where more than 100 cats were found abandoned and suffering. The home’s residents had left the area after their mortgage had been foreclosed, leaving the cats behind. When bank employees came to lock up the house, they discovered the cats. The rescue group was not able to accommodate so many cats at once, so Donna, touched by the plight of the cats, took them to her own home. Donna received assistance from several local rescue organizations in the form of donations of cages, food, and other items.

Soon, other people began calling Donna requesting that she take in other stray and feral cats, and almost by accident, the Hundred Cat Foundation was born.

The foundation has grown since its beginning, and now occupied the former manager’s house beside the ASPCA facility in Potter Township.

On April 10, this house was the site of a cat-neutering clinic. The Hundred Cat Foundation subscribes to Ann Bolser and Sean Herrmann prepare to transfer a cat from a program called TNR, which stands for trap, neuter, a cage trap to a net and return. The goal is to limit the population explosion of colonies of feral and barn cats in the area. Cats are trapped in cage type traps, and brought to the clinic for neutering surgery by a qualified veterinarian. At the April 10 clinic, more than 60 cats were expected to be neutered. Dr. Ravi Murarka, from Philadelphia, performed the surgeries that day. Some local veterinarians have also done clinics for the Hundred Cat Foundation. a Cats arriving at the clinic are checked in and their weight and gender documented. They are removed from their cages, and carefully wrapped in a net. After they receive an injection of hospital-grade anesthesia, it’s nap time for kitty. While unconscious, they are shaved and prepped for surgery, then sent to the sterile operating room. Let cream cheese come to room temperature. Reduced-fat cheese works fine.

Plain chopped garlic works but I prefer the flavor of roasted garlic. Use mortar and pestle to smash seeds and make the caraway very fragrant. Mix any combination of French or Italian blend of spices together. Mix all ingredients except black pepper with a fork to bring everything together. With a piece of plastic wrap, roll the cheese mixture into a log or pat into a round. Then unwrap the cheese and cover entire surface with the coarse cracked pepper. Rewrap the cheese and store in the refrigerator until ready to use. Allow cheese to come to room temperature for best flavor before serving.

SALAD TOPPING: Another great use for this cheese and healthy heart dish is to make a beet salad and top with small slice of cheese. Make a salad with whatever dark greens you have, some thinly sliced purple cabbage, and bean sprouts. Then chop ½ cup of pickled beets and top your salad with the beets.

Add a slice of this cheese directly on top of the beets. For a dressing, I season my salad with black pepper, any flavored vinegar, and splash of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. This salad is very simple, good, and healthful. Plus it’s a way of sneaking your family a vegetable that is not normally served.

TASTY ADDITION: We just discovered jícama for our salads. I thinly slice the jícama, cut the edges off to peel it, then slice it into matchstick-size slices, and layer them into our salads. It adds a nice crunch and it has subtle sweet flavor, almost like a radish.

Red Cross Encourages 56-day Blood Donors Contributed by Greater Alleghenies Red Cross

Winter storm-related blood drive cancellations are a memory; however, officials of American Red Cross, Greater Alleghenies Blood Services Region, continue to encourage blood donations.

“Strong donor turnout in April and May can give us good momentum into summer. And with only 8 percent of eligible individuals donating blood each year, there’s great potential for solid collections during spring,” commented John Hagins, CEO.

He noted that during the summer it can be challenging to maintain sufficient blood supplies. About a quarter of Greater Alleghenies’ annual blood donations are given at high schools, colleges, and universities. “School and family vacations typically result in decreased donor turnout,” Hagins added.

The Red Cross estimates that approximately 38 percent of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood. But only 8

The Hope Endures Celebration will include appetizers, dinner, music from members of the Altoona Symphony and Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra, and an auction. On average, individuals in the region’s 100-county service area donate blood 1.7 times a year. However, many could give blood up to six times a year. Those who donate using the double red-cell technology can give up to three times a year.

Most healthy people aged 17 and older, or 16 with parental consent, who weigh at least 110 pounds, are eligible to donate blood. High school students and those aged 18 and younger must also meet specific height and weight requirements. Many donors are eligible to give blood every 56 days.

BELLEFONTE – In the summer of 2009, the autographed dog in the photograph was seen in a Plaza Centre antiques stall in Bellefonte. A customer recognized it as containing names of classmates of her uncle, John Brouse, class of 1958. She mentioned her “find” to another class member her at church the next BHS Class of ’58 classmates, William H. Beck, (L), President Ronald Pifer, and day.

Jim Alles: Hard-Working Volunteer

Jim Alles’ association with Siemens Technologies and its construction contracts on the University Park Campus of Pennsylvania State University – specifically the new business building – brought him from the Pittsburgh area to Houserville and Centre County seven years ago. He works at PSU’s Office of the Physical Plant as a direct digital control specialist.

Alles leads by example through his volunteer work with the Centre County Corps –The Salvation Army Jim Alles, On the Job in the Disaster Response Unit office in State College – as he does whatever is asked of him.

Shortly after coming to State College, Jim enrolled in the Community Emergency Response Team class at Centre Lifelink. Centre County Corps’ Captains Chuck and Pat were also enrolled.

“We started talking about our common interest in being prepared for disasters,” Jim recalled.

“Shortly thereafter, within three or four months, I got involved with the Centre County Corps.”

Daily Emergency Assistance is the nucleus of those basic human services that The Salvation Army has provided during crisis situations since its conception in 1865. Housing and utility payments, lodging, occasional prescriptions, emergency food and gasoline vouchers are provided.

Individuals and families desiring assistance are first interviewed to prepare a detailed assessment and budget analysis. This is followed by client-help recommendations, after which assistance requests are considered on a first-come, individual-needs basis. Clients are referred to appropriate utility programs, often in collaboration with other non-profit benevolent organizations and churches.

The CCC is credited with supplying the first Disaster Response Unit to Centre County. The used vehicle was purchased from eastern division and driven to State College.

The mobile unit is just one of the resources that the Salvation Army provides to Centre County. It serves as a platform from which to serve beverages like coffee and hot chocolate, bottled water; meals that are prepared beforehand and transported in the DRU, as well as canned meals, Disaster Response Unit in Action soups, and quick fare like hot dogs or macaroni and cheese.

Alles is proud to be a Salvation Army volunteer. He and his family got started by ringing bells at kettles. Jim also assists in providing back packs with supplies, games and other things at the Back to School Fair for area children – serving the provided meal, picking up trash, emptying trash cans, parking vehicles, and tearing down the fair at end of the day.

Jim will receive the Salvation Army’s Volunteer of the Year award “for carrying on the tradition of giving to the less fortunate.” The Hope Endures Celebration will be held at the State College Ramada Inn, Tuesday, May 10, beginning at 5:45 p.m.

“Jim Alles is a valuable member of our EDS Response Committee,” Captain Chuck Niedermyer said. “His behind-thescenes efforts and ready availability have enabled us to touch many lives in Centre County.”

When asked for a personal quote, Jim deferred to the Salvation Army’s current slogan and said, “I am doing the most good.”

Millheim Holds Twelfth Annual Fishing Derby

MILLHEIM – “I got one!” squealed five-year-old Gino Herrmann. Ben Prough, standing nearby, immediately helped Gino reel in his catch, then unhooked the trout from the line. He handed the fish to Gino, who spun around line an Olympic discus thrower, and tossed the fish back into the swimming pool. Huh? The swimming pool?

Derby, it must sound a little odd, but for one day each April for the last 12 years, the Millheim Community Swimming Pool has been filled with water from nearby Elk Creek, and stocked with over 100 trout for a fun day of fishing and fund raising. This year’s derby was held on Saturday, April 9.

The derby might be called an accident of geography: The Millheim pool sits in Soldiers and Sailors Park in close proximity to Elk Creek. The pool draws its water from the creek, and during the winter months is kept about three-quarters full, since, if it were empty, the high ground water table could make the pool literally float Ed Martin instructs seven year up out of the ground if old Garrett Wingard on fishing techniques.

On Sunday, April 10, The Pennsylvania Centre Chamber Orchestra concluded its 2010-2011 concert series, The Grand European Tour, at Grace Lutheran Church in downtown State College. During the concert the orchestra performed Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings as a memorial for all the families and people affected by the recent tragedies in Japan.

Thanks to contributions from the audience, the orchestra collected more than $700 for the Red Cross and Save the Children Japan relief funds. In continued support for the people of Japan, the PCO will be accepting donations until Saturday, April 30. Checks can be made payable to the Red Cross and/or Save the Children and mailed to the Pennsylvania Centre Orchestra at 119 S. Fraser St, Suite D State College, PA 16801.

heavy rains occurred. It made sense to fill it up and stock it with fish for a day. After the derby, the pool gets its annual cleaning in preparation for the summer season.

Two days before the derby, the pool was stocked with 104 trout purchased from the nearby Elk Creek Fish Hatchery, operated by Dan Brigham, about two miles away in the “Narrows” (Route 445). There was one large (20+ inches) trout which, if caught, would earn the lucky angler’s family a free pool membership for 2011. A $20 fee, which includes breakfast, and supports the Penns Valley Parks & Recreation Board, is charged to fish at the derby, and children age six and under fish free with a paying adult. The event has been well attended, sometimes with more than 80 people coming out to enjoy the day.

Penns Valley Park & Recreation Board members Rich Gallup and John Miller said attendance was down a bit this year, probably due to the cool, damp weather. The board has had to contend with all types of weather.

One year, the temperature was in the 80s, and another year, board members had to shovel several inches of snow off the pool deck!

I saw this experience being repeated over and over at the Millheim Fishing Derby, and it was very reassuring to see parents and grandparents passing their fishing skills along to the younger generation.

“Daffy Down Dilly has now come to town with a petticoat green and a bright yellow gown.” My grandmother recited this nursery rhyme each spring as the first daffodils bloomed happily next to the old red shed by her expansive vegetable garden. Her mother had planted them there throughout the 1930s whenever she received them in as her “Easter Flower.” And they had multiplied.

To this day they are one of my favorite varieties, the stately King Alfred daffodil.

This big, bold bright yellow daffodil was named for King Alfred the Great, the first true King of England who reigned in 871 AD. It was originally developed in England near the close of the 19th century and was an immediate sensation. Daffodils were highly sought after, bringing huge prices that only wealthy aristocrats could afford to pay.

In fact, in 1900, the prized bulbs sold for the sum of six pounds six shillings each, which would buy about half a ton of coal or pay the wages of a laborer for more than six weeks. As the bulbs multiplied, the price dropped and by the A few of the hundreds of late 1920s they were affordable to most everyone. by Sandie Biddle) ies include orange, pink, or even green flowers. Their trumpets may be ruffled, smooth, fat, thin, short, or long. Likewise, their petals are quite varied from split, to twisted, or refluxed. Many daffodils are fragrant, particularly the small late narcissus varieties. With more than 24,000 named cultivars, any gardener is sure to find a few special varieties that tickle their fancy.

Very little effort is needed to grow daffodils. They are not bothered by rodents – unlike tulips and lilies whose bulbs often disappear thanks to a hungry squirrel or chipmunk.

Even the rabbits ignore them as they emerge in the spring.

The bulbs should be planted early to mid autumn in a welldrained site, with at least six hours of sun a day. The only maintenance is to cut daffodils back in the summer after their flowers have faded and their foliage has browned. Large clumps of bulbs may be dug, divided and replanted in the fall.

BELLEFONTE – The Bellefonte American Legion Auxiliary Easter Egg Hunt took place last Saturday (4/17) at Talleyrand Park. With 10,000 eggs and tons of activities, it’s arguably the biggest egg hunt in the region.

Children from walking to age 12, registered, met the Easter Bunny, saw clowns, and got pony rides until the 2 p.m. egg hunt start. Afterward there were plenty of raffle prizes, crafts, and refreshments. This is the fourth year the Bellefonte American Legion Auxiliary has held this hunt and it gets better every year!

Marsha The Marshmallow Peep

HOWARD – Howard resident Bill Dann has created what could become an Easter internet sensation. He co-wrote a song called Marsha The Marshmallow Peep about one of those irresistible seasonal treats known as Peeps who decides to break free from the package and escape.

Dann teamed up with Jack Servello of Altoona. Servello sang and recorded the song that is now up on You Tube.

Servello and Dann have collaborated on numerous songs including Heroes Close To Home which was inspired

by DJ Emery, the Bellefonte Marine who was injured in a suicide attack in Iraq in 2007.

As for how he got the idea for “Marsha” Dann says, “I was in the grocery store several weeks ago and noticed Bill Dann of Howard shelves fully loaded with those recently wrote a novelty irresistible seasonal novelties song Marsha The known as Peeps. BEA Outdoor Classroom Closer to Opening WINGATE – The Centre County Association of School Retirees (CCASR) recently presented its second annual mini-grant to an active school employee for use in an activity or project that benefits students but has not received funding from the school budget. This year’s grant, in the amount of $200, was presented to Bald Eagle School District’s Mark Ott for use in the district’s planned Environmental Education Center.

Through several other grants and many volunteer hours the new center is near completion. Located on a pond near the Wingate school complex, the building is in place for environmental studies by students in all grades, K-12. The centerpiece for these studies is the pond with its adjacent fields and forest. Some 30 to 40 staff members are awaiting the facility’s opening.

The missing piece had been basic safety necessities needed before students could work near the pond.

These items include life rings and floating rescue ropes.

This grant will allow for the purchase of these essentials – vital to open the center and ensure the safety of the students.

It is anticipated that about 1,900 students each year will have an opportunity to study in this unique outdoor classroom.

The 2012 Mini-grant will be awarded to an employee (s) of the Bellefonte Area School District.

Other awards presented annually to area schools by CCASR include a $750 scholarship to a graduating high school senior who plans to major in education in college and the Lauretta Woodson Award which is presented to a professional employee and to a support staff member in the receiving district. These three awards are rotated among Bald Eagle, Bellefonte, Penns Valley, and State College Area school districts. The Philipsburg-Osceola district is served by the Clearfield chapter of school retirees.

STATE COLLEGE – The grand opening ceremony of Millbrook Marsh Nature Center’s new Spring Creek Education Building took place on Sunday (4/17) afternoon. The program included speeches from Board members of Centre Parks and Recreation and Millbrook Marsh Nature Center, flag raising/dedication of a flagpole presented by The American Legion Post #245, and dedication of a new bench in honor of Robert D. Griffith’s retirement as Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Recreation and Parks Society, and of course the much-anticipated ribbon-cutting of the Members of American Legion Post #245 new building. raise the flag

Sue Mascolo, chair of Centre Parks and Recreation started off the ceremony by recognizing the members of the Millbrook Marsh Committee and expressing her gratitude to them for their contributions to the building.

“You’re people that have worked so hard to make sure that this has happened and it’s not been easy for you, but I appreciate what you’ve done,” she said addressing the committee.

Afterwards, Griffith was recognized for his contributions, service, and commitment to Centre Parks and Recreation Sue Mascolo, Chair of Centre Parks and with the unveiling a Recreation recognizes the Millbrook brand new bench on Marsh Nature Committee for their efforts the grounds in his honor. The Centre County Community Help Centre’s thrift store, Double Take, will be holding two events during the month of April coinciding with Earth Day to promote purchasing “recycled clothing” in the State College community.

The first event will be a trunk show from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the HUB-Robeson Building, showcasing the high end clothing Double Take has to offer. On April 22, 1970, America celebrated its first Earth Day. This particular day was chosen to represent Earth Day as it was the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of fall in the southern hemisphere. Earth Day was consciously established by Wisconsin senator, Gaylord Nelson, as an effort to promote environmentalism and is now a nationally recognized holiday! Since then, Americans have cleaned up their act…or have we?

As the snow melted and our roadways cleared, it was exhilarating to take a walk down our road, it was also astonishing to see the amount of litter scattered along these back roads and highways. To be honest, I thought we were above and beyond littering. There are garbage cans and recycling centers everywhere, so why it is that garbage

still lines our beautiful Pennsylvania roads and waterways? In earlier decades, some wouldn’t think twice about littering and pollution but, today it’s surprising to see after the amount of awareness we were taught in school.

Thomas Wagner of Wellsboro, a friend and avid bicyclist, noted the following on one of his bike rides. “Based on my unscientific roadside survey, there is far more drinking and driving on the back roads than is probably prudent. Lite alcoholic beverages appear to be a favorite!” He also commented on which was more disturbing… the drinking and driving or the littering?

While Earth advocacy was intense while in school, it is often quickly forgotten if not reiterated. So in honor of this Earth Day 2011, here are some things which cause pollution in our water, land, and sky and things we can do on a small scale to make a big difference!

Local Woman Publishes Eco-Kids’ Books

Penny Eifrig is a book publisher, but she’s no ordinary book publisher. Eifrig is a “green” publisher, meaning she publishes children’s books that teach about the earth and environmental issues. The books are published here in State College on 60-percent recycled paper.

Eifrig’s mother was an activist, who started one of the first recycling centers in State College at Fairmount Elementary school in the 1970s – back when recycling wasn’t so common. Eifrig used to go to the center with her mother every week to help sort out plastics, bottles, and other recyclable materials. “I’ve always grown up with a green conscious before people were really thinking about it,” she said.

Just in time for all the Earth Day, Eifrig has published two new books for children. The first one is Well Earth, Well

Me! by Kenda Swartz Pepper. “It’s a beautiful book of photo illustrations with a fun story for little kids, but then it also has 15 tips that kids can do with their parents to make a green impact,” Eifrig says.

The other is Earth Day . . . and the Recycling Fashionista

by Suzanne Ridolfi. In this story, the heroine of Ridolfi’s self-esteem series, Abby’s Adventures, discovers a better way to make a dress from recycled bottles and teaches her classmates about how plastic is recycled in the process. There is even a tangible tool to go along with the series: an Abby doll wearing exactly that dress – and both are made from 100-percent recycled plastic bottles.

Eifrig thinks it’s very important for children to learn about these issues at an early age, which is why she gives presentation to classes at local elementary schools. She says that teaching children about these things right now will help them form good habits like turning off the lights when leaving the room, bringing a bag to the grocery store, or turning the water off after brushing teeth. “These things become trained habits and if we can teach the children, the children can go out and tell the parents,” she said.

Eifrig also says that the children’s response to the books and learning about these issues have been very positive. “It is amazing. They are very aware of what’s going on,” she said. Penn State Earth Day Event Celebrates the “Power of One” UNVERSITY PARK – Celebrating Earth Day has long been a tradition at Penn State’s University Park campus, but this year the university plans to bump things up a notch.

Today – Friday, April 22, between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the HUB-Robeson Center, Penn State will convene a celebration with the theme “A Billion Acts of Green Begins with the Power of One.” Scheduled speakers include geography professor and climate-change expert Richard Alley, President Graham Spanier, Assistant Vice-President of the Physical Plant Steve Maruszewski, Penn State student David Adewumi, and others.

Tables in Alumni Hall will represent the work of more than 40 Penn State academic units and departments that are currently contributing to the university’s green efforts.

Interactive games and competitions will keep things lively between speakers, along with a background mix of music and videos from around the globe.

“Students will be able to learn about clubs, courses and green jobs; faculty members will meet like-minded colleagues for collaboration; and staff will meet colleagues who share their commitment to greening their work space.” Said Erik Foley, manager of Penn State’s Campus Sustainability Office.

At 12:15, the Center for Sustainability and Media Commons will screen the 12 finalists of the Sustainable State video contest – a program which challenged the Penn State community to re-vision sustainability as the pursuit of global happiness. Public online voting for the winning videos officially kicked off today.

Prescription Drug Disposal Drop-off April 30 Contributed by State College Police Department

STATE COLLEGE - On April 30 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. the State College Police Department, in partnership with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), will provide the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs.

To properly and safely dispose of these drugs, please bring them to the State College Municipal Building Police Lobby at 243 South Allen Street, State College.

The service is completely free and anonymous.

Last September, Americans turned in 242,000 pounds – 121 tons – of prescription drugs at nearly 4,100 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3,000 state and local law enforcement partners, including the State College Police Department. Offering this service last year was so successful that it was decided to offer this again.

This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet.

In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines, flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash, both pose potential safety and health hazards.

Muzz Kipers Mock NFL Draft 2.0

With the NFL Draft fast approaching and a season potentially hanging in the ballets, next Thursday’s NFL draft may be the last professional football event that we as fans see televised for a very long time. That being said, here is my self-proclaimed Muzz Kiper Mock Draft, version 2.0.

1. Carolina Panthers – Need a franchise quarterback not named Jimmy Clausen The Pick and why – Cam Newton, QB, Auburn Face it, the Panthers need a quarterback, and Cam Newton will sell tickets (if/when the NFL plays this season). Is he still raw? Yes. Is he a phenomenal talent? Yes. Is it the right pick to be made? That’s to be seen. In an ESPN special with Jon Gruden, Newton struggled with some of the former coaches questions. That has to raise some flags. The Panthers have other needs, but the quarterback is the most important position on every football team, even if he isn’t quite ready for the responsibility of an NFL quarterback.

2. Denver Broncos – Need defensive playmakers The Pick and why – Marcell Darius, DT, Alabama The Broncos defense needs help, and with Elvis Dumerville returning, they will get a boost. Darius sures up a defensive line that is in severe need of some TLC. 3. Buffalo Bills – DEFENSE!!! (stomp stomp) DEFENSE!!!

The Pick and why – Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU I’ve said it before; Peterson is the most NFL ready player since the 49ers drafted Patrick Willis in 2007. You can’t pass on a talent like Peterson here. Sure, their quarterback position could use an upgrade, but Ryan Fitzpatrick proved he could sling the ball around the park last year. If their defense can stop the opposing offenses they will face this year in the AFC East, they may have a chance to stick around until late in the 4th quarter in more of their games.

4. Cincinnati Bengals – Carson Palmer out, (fill in the blank) in The Pick and why – A.J Green, WR, Georgia Carson Palmer’s house is for sale, he has said numerous times that he’ll retire before playing in a Bengal uniform again and people close to him say that he’s very serious. Bengals owner Mike Brown is naïve to think he can keep Palmer around for another year, and should draft a quarterback here, namely, Blain Gabbert. He won’t though, and will have to hope that an Andrew Dalton or Ryan Mallett falls into the second round. Now to the pick; A.J. Green is a stud. You just have to find him a quarterback to throw him the ball.

5. Arizona Cardinals – Need a quarterback in the worst way possible The Pick and why – Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri Gabbert is a no brainer if he is available. The Cardinals need someone to get the face of the franchise (Larry Fitzgerald) the football. He played in a spread offense in college, and the Cards can spread the field like they did in 2009 with Fitzgerald and company at wide receiver.

6. Cleveland Browns – Need a WR for Colt McCoy The Pick and why – Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M Probably one of the safest picks in this year’s draft. He gives the Browns defense an immediate boost with his high end play.

7. San Francisco 49ers – Need to get the ball to Michael Crabtree and Vernon Davis The Pick and why – Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska Alex Smith has reportedly been offered a free agent contract, so he could be the band aid for yet another year until the team finds the franchise quarterback they desperately need (hint: Jim Harbaugh’s old quarterback at Stanford in next year’s draft). The back end of their defense needs help, with Nate Clements getting up there in age. Amukamara will help fill the need in their secondary.

8. Tennessee Titans – Need a franchise quarterback The Pick and why – Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn The next best quarterback on the board is Jake Locker, but Bud Adams doesn’t jump at another top ten quarterback like he did with Vince Young a few years ago. Fairley fills the void of former Titan Albert Haynesworth in pairing with Jason Jones on the Titans defensive line.

New Titans coach Mike Munchak (former Nittany Lion) is an OL at heart, and will look to build his team in the trenches.

9. Dallas Cowboys – Need players in the secondary The Pick and why – Mike Pouncey, OL, Florida Jerry Jones likes to make a big splash, and taking a C/G with a top ten pick isn’t sexy. Jones saw what Pouncey’s twin brother Maurkice did in Pittsburgh last year, and wants to protect his franchise quarterback who was sidelined last year because of a hit taken because of his lackluster Oline.

10. Washington Redskins – Need a franchise quarterback The Pick and why – Jake Locker, QB, Washington Donovan McNabb will be gone when the league opens back up for business. Mike Shanahan loves quarterbacks, and I think he falls in love with Locker at pick 10.

11. Houston Texans – Revamp their defense to fit the 3-4 scheme The Pick and why – Robert Quinn, DE/LB, North Carolina

He is the dynamic pass rusher needed in new defensive coordinator Wade Phillip’s scheme. He sat out last year, but shined at UNC’s pro day. He has tremendous upside and would give the Texans one of the better linebacking crews in football.

12. Minnesota Vikings – OL help for Adrian Peterson The Pick and why – Tyron Smith, OT, USC

Taking Smith here would allow for current left tackle Bryant Mckinnie to move to the right side of the line either this year or next.

13. Detroit Lions – Help on the defensive side of the ball

The Pick and why – Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue

The Lions have drafted enough offense over the last five years.

They need to start building Jim Schwartz defense. Kerrigan has a motor that doesn’t stop, and will be a great fit in Schwartz 4-3 defense.

14. St. Louis Rams – Build around Sam Bradford The Pick and why – Julio Jones, WR, Alabama

The dude ran a 4.38 40-yard dash with a cracked bone in his foot.

Imagine him at full speed. Sam Bradford needs weapons, and Jones is just what the Rams need.

15. Miami Dolphins – Find someone to run the football The Pick and why – Mikel Leshoure, RB, Illinois

Ricky Williams appears to be a goner, and Ronnie Brown has a history of injuries and could be on his way out as well. Mark Ingram may be the better back in this draft, but injury concerns have led some teams to pulling him off of their draft boards. Leshoure was a workhorse last year for the Illini, and could be the workhorse back the Dolphins have missed since the days of Larry Csonka.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars – Help on the defensive line The Pick and why – Aldon Smith, DE/OLB, Missouri

The Jags need help on their D-Line, and Smith is the freakish athlete that can help them out immediately.

17. New England Patriots – Do they ever have ANY needs?

The Pick and why – Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College

The Patriots have multiple picks in each of the first three rounds, and could move up or down depending on what The Hoodie decides he wants to do. Castonzo would give some youth to the Pats aging O-Line. He wouldn’t even need a moving truck to head to Foxboro, coming from Boston College.

18. San Diego Chargers – Youth on the D-Line The Pick and why – Cameron Jordan, DE/DT, California

Like him or not, A.J. Smith knows what he’s doing when it comes to the draft. Jordan brings youth and an edge to the Chargers D-Line.

19. New York Giants – Offensive Linemen for Eli Manning The Pick and why – Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin

William Beatty (2009 2nd round pick) has struggled in his two years in the league, and if they want to get the life of the contract they gave Eli Manning, they need to protect him.

20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Defensive Line The Pick and why – J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin

He is the best player available, and just happens to fill a need.

21. Kansas City Chiefs – Offensive Line The Pick and why – Nate Solder, OT, Colorado

Scott Pioli is a smart man, being the puppet master behind the Patriots dynasty on the 2000’s. He fights the urge to draft Phil Taylor, who could become the Chiefs version of Vince Vilfork.

22. Indianapolis Colts – Offensive Line help for Peyton Manning The Pick and why – Derek Sherron, OT, Mississippi State

He is the best tackle available, and Peyton needs all of the help he can get up front. He can make his skill guys Pro-Bowlers, but he needs time to do it.

23. Philadelphia Eagles – Help in the secondary The Pick and why – Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado

The Eagles are said to be in love with Prince Amukamara, the CB from Nebraska, and could move up to the top ten to make that selection. If not, they take the best corner available, and that happens to be Smith.

24. New Orleans Saints – Help on the D-Line The Pick and why – Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa

Clayborn provides some punch to a lackluster defensive line from last year in the Big Easy.

25. Seattle Seahawks – Quarterback for the aging Matt Hasselbeck, if he returns The Pick and why – Da’Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson

Talk about a drop. At one point, he was pegged as a top five pick, but injuries and stamina are big questions marks for a guy you would be paying a ton of money. He will help the D-Line in Seattle, but maybe for only a couple of years until his knees wear out.

26. Baltimore Ravens – When are they going to replace Ray Lewis?

The Pick and why – Cameron Heyward, DE/DT Ohio State

The Ravens are built on defense, and they stay on that side of the ball. Ray Lewis’ replacement was to be Sergio Kindle last year, but he fell down a flight of stairs and suffered a severe injury. Time will tell if he is the man or not.

27. Atlanta Falcons – Find Tony Gonzalez’s replacement The Pick and why – Kyle Rudolph, TE, Notre Dame

They need someone to free up coverage from Roddy White, or, maybe catch the ball when it’s not thrown in White’s direction. It’s always nice to give your young stud quarterback options. Rudolph can learn behind Gonzalez for a year before taking over in 2012 for the future Hall of Famer.

28. New England Patriots – Seriously, how many picks do they have?

The Pick and why – Traded to Tennessee – Andrew Dalton, QB, TCU

The Titans trade up to round 1 and get the talented Horned Frog signal caller, and don’t have to spend an arm and a leg for him. The trade gives the Patriots even more picks, possibly in the 2012 draft.

29. Chicago Bears – Replacing Tommie Harris on the D-Line The Pick and why – Muhammad Wilkerson, DE/DT, Temple

Tommie Harris is gone, and the Bears need someone to occupy space to allow Brian Urlacher to make plays.

30. New York Jets – No real needs, as they played in the AFC Championship The Pick and why – Akeem Ayers, DE/LB, UCLA

Rex Ryan LOVES defense, and will keep stocking his cupboard

Eagles Rough up Rams in Shutout Road Win

SPRING MILLS – Coleman Hoffman made his season debut on the mound for the Eagles and despite not recording a strikeout, it was a successful and impressive first outing. He retired ten of the first twelve batters he faced after hitting the first and walking the second batter. Bald Eagle Area improved to 4-1 on the season with an 11-0 five inning victory last Friday.

While Hoffman held the Rams’ bats quiet; the Eagles were anything but quiet at the plate. They rapped out 15 hits in winning their fourth straight game of the season.

A six-run first inning would provide more than enough run support for the right-handed Hoffman (1-0) as would limit the Rams to just two hits with the first coming in the fourth inning to Sam Snyder. The Eagles tacked on a run in the second inning before adding two more runs in each the fourth and fifth innings.

Justin Taylor and Ty Bennett led the attack for Bald Eagle Area with three hits apiece while also driving in two runs. Hoffman hurt the Rams not only with his arm but also at the plate as he had two hits including a double.

Dylan Womer also had two hits with a double in the win. in Gotham City.

31. Pittsburg Steelers – Help on both sides of the line The Pick and why – Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor

Big Ben could use help on the O-line, but there isn’t a blue chipper available drafting at 31. Casey Hampton has anchored the Steelers D-Line for over a decade, but without a serviceable young backup on the roster, Kevin Colbert looks to keep his first round hit streak alive.

32. Green Bay Packers – No real needs for the youngest team in football The Pick and why – Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama

The Packers don’t really NEED Ingram, but with Ryan Grant spending all of last season on IR, and using a RBBC (Running Back By Committee), Ingram could certainly sure up the RB situation in Title Town.

Lady Rams Routed by Lady Eagles

Mistakes can hurt the best of teams. Mistakes made by a young team can eventually decide the outcome of a game, as was the case in Penns Valley’s 11-0 shutout loss to the Lady Eagles of Bald Eagle last Friday.

The Lady Eagles used an eight-run second inning to jump on top of the Lady Rams, and never looked back. Not as if they needed the offensive onslaught, Bald Eagle pitcher Megan Dutish threw her first no-hitter in the contest, which was called after five innings.

The Lady Eagles used a three-run fourth inning to put the final nail in the Lady Rams coffin. The Lady Rams have a young team that starts several freshmen, and only has 13 players on the roster. With youth ultimately comes experience. The experience that the Lady Rams are getting early on this season is bound to pay off late in the season, and in years to come.

The Red Raider baseball team played out the final five innings of a game versus Tyrone that was delayed by weather on March 30th Thursday, and pushed their record on the season to 3-1 with a 12-4 victory. Brandon Quay pitched all five innings in the contest, allowing only two hits. He helped his own cause at the plate, belting a two-run homerun in the seventh inning that contributed to Bellefonte’s other five runs they picked up in the inning. With the score knotted at four in the sixth inning, Cody McClure smashed a solo homerun to break the tie, and give the Raiders a lead they would not relinquish.

The Red Raider baseball team lost a heartbreaker to Indian Valley in extra innings, falling to the Warriors 6-5 in eight innings.

Bellefonte scored three runs in the seventh inning to force extras, but after loading the bases with one out in the eighth inning, the Raiders came up short. Matt Watson led the Raiders, going 2-for-3 and scoring two runs.

Freshman Dylan Moerschbacher also had two hits in his Varsity debut.

Raychel DeArmitt and Alexandra Stathes combined to toss a four hitter for the Lady Raiders, as Bellefonte defeated Indian Valley last Friday, 5-1. Jillian Musser paced the Lady Raiders with three hits. She was on base when Erica DeVinney doubled in the fifth inning to start the onslaught for Bellefonte; DeVinney’s double plated two runs.

In the sixth, Hannah Cooper, who had two hits, belted a two-run single to add to Bellefonte’s lead.

The Eagles baseball team was on the road on Monday as they traveled to Clearfield. They held a 5-0 lead over the host Bison heading into the home half of the fourth inning before seeing the lead trimmed to 5-1.

The fifth inning saw Clearfield erupt for six runs in the inning and take the lead for the first time. The Eagles would rally back to tie the score at 7-7 in the sixth inning but the Bison surge ahead once again in the bottom of the inning with two runs to set the final score at 9-7. Justin Taylor picked up the loss in relief of Dylan Womer. Womer struck out five in four innings of work and was charged with four runs on five hits. Michael Cowles had three hits including a home run and a double. Adam Snook had two hits for the Eagles. The Junior Varsity team improved to 3-0-1 with a 12-4 win. The Little Lions baseball team improved to 2-1 last Friday with an 11-1 rout of host St. Mary’s. A big part of the offense came off the bat of sophomore Darian Herncane.

He drilled two home runs in the including a grand slam in the second inning and a solo blast in the fourth. The home runs were the first two hits of his varsity career. The Little Lions also took advantage of twelve walks issued by Dutchmen pitching. Mike Finlan pitched all five innings of the mercy rule shortened game. He scattered four hits and struck out five. collected three hits. Cole Long had two doubles.

The Lady Eagles were back on the diamond as well on Monday as they posted a dominant 9-0 win over visiting Clearfield.

Lily Glunt led the 15-hit attack with three hits including a double. Chelsey Poorman, Kelly Chamber, Taylor Parsons and Carrie Barnyak each picked up two hits. Chambers and Barnyak each had a double. Lexi Josefik had a triple while Megan Dudish improved to 4-1 on the mound after scattering four hits and striking out five in the complete game shutout. The Lady Eagles improved to 6-1 with the win. The Junior Varsity team improved to 4-2 with a 7-1 win. Tylor Yarrison got the win on the mound. Mary Pillot paced the offense with two hits including a double.

The Lady Little Lion softball team was in action on Monday but came up on the short end of a 14-8 loss. Our Lady of Mercy showed little of it against State College pitching as the Monarchs ripped 18 hits and jumped out to an early lead. The Rochester, NY school scored three times in the first and tallied two more in the second. They really opened up the game with six runs in the third. The Lady Little Lions scored twice in the bottom of the third and added five more in the bottom of the sixth inning but the deficit was simply too big to overcome.

Clearfield opened the game up with 10 runs in the first three innings, but the Penns Valley baseball team couldn’t produce enough offense, as they fell to the Bison 12-6.

Sam Snyder took the bump for Penns Valley, but was relieved by Ethan Thoms early in the ballgame after struggling to find the strike zone. Snyder produced at the plate though, going 4-for-4 with a two-run homerun. Cody Luse contributed two hits for the Rams and Nigel Grandy went 4-for-4 on the day for Penns Valley.

The Bearcats of Huntingdon were too much for the Rams of Penns Valley, as the Bearcats defeated the Rams 8-5. Nate Negri led Huntingdon, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and four RBI’s. Cody Luse was 3-for-4 and Ethan Thoms went 2-for-3 for Penns Valley in the loss.

Mackenzie Wilson and Carly Gonder each belted three hits for the Lady Mounties. In the fifth inning, with the Lady Mounties leading 7-1, the Lady Raiders bats came alive, as Erica DeVinney, Chrissy Tressler, Vanessa Cooper and Devon Etters each contributed RBI singles to make it a one run game. However, Philipsburg didn’t need any more offense, as Kate Burge tossed two scoreless innings in relief.

Monday turned out to be a battle of the Watson’s in Bellefonte and PO’s clash on the diamond. Parker Watson went the distance for the Mounties, as the defeated the Red Raiders 3-2 in Philipsburg. Watson threw a complete game five-hitter in the victory for the Mounties. The Mounties scored all three of their runs in the first inning off of Bellefonte starter Taylor Smith, including a leadoff homerun from Robbie Smith. Bellefonte’s Matt Watson entered the game in the second inning in relief of Smith, and stopped the proverbial bleeding. Watson struck out five Mounties in his five innings of relief. He was also involved in the game’s most exciting play. In the sixth inning, Watson threw a wild pitch that Bellefonte catcher Eric Regel couldn’t handle, and Philipsburg’s Mark Curtis dashed for home from third base.

Regel recovered the ball and threw to Watson, who made an acrobatic play in tagging Curtis at the plate, preventing PO from adding to their lead. Bellefonte struggled to plate many runs, leaving several runners on the base path throughout the game. Robert Gummo tripled in the contest, but was left on third as the Red Raiders failed to plate what would have ultimately been the tying run in the game.

Now is the time to organize teams for the first ever Centre County Double Sprint Triathlon. The Centre County YMCA is sponsoring a unique mega-tri event. We are looking for a few good individuals, superheroes, and / or teams. Teams can be doubles (husband - wife, friend - friend, father - son, etc.) or three-ways (no, not what you are thinking - remember the C in YMCA).

A Sprint Tri is a timed race of three short course events: swim, bike, and run. The Sprint Tri starts with an early morning wake up call with a 200-yard swim, followed by a quick six-mile bike ride around our beautiful Happy Valley, and finishes with a brisk two-mile run. And, at no extra cost, superheroes double their fun by repeating the entire course. (Beginners may enter for a single circuit).

Blue/White Weekend Turns Out Very “Gray” Trout Season Opens on Penns Valley Streams

Saturday’s weather conditions were the worst possible scenario for the Penn State coaching staff. When it comes to evaluating their players for the upcoming season, knowing how they will be able to perform in all conditions shouldn’t be hard after this past weekend. The rain never seemed to stop, as the Blue squad upended the White in Saturday’s annual Blue/White scrimmage, 10-0.

The game was called early in the 3rd quarter due to the steady downpour of rain.

All eyes were on the quarterbacks Saturday. The quarterback competition that is going on in Happy Valley is one that could go down as the most controversial in school history when it comes to deciding the future of the program. Should Rob Bolden opt to leave Penn State this spring, he would be the second four-star quarterback recruit to leave the program in the last three years (the other was Pat Devlin after the 2008 season), and possibly, not the last from this years squad; more on that later.

The future of Penn State recruiting could be affected tremendously should the sophomore quarterback decide to leave the University after this spring. Incoming recruits that see four-star recruits bolting from State College early (and not for the NFL draft) could be inclined to take a scholarship at another university. Bolden had the worst day of all five quarterbacks that stepped under center for the Nittany Lions on Saturday, going 0-5 with an interception on the first play from scrimmage. He was non-committal as to what his plans are this coming season when talking with the media after the game. He indicated that he was to meet with coaches in the coming weeks before making his final decision.

Matt McGloin, the ying to Bolden’s yang, was 5-10 on the day, throwing for 109 yards and a touchdown to Brandon Moseby-Felder just before the brief intermission Saturday. The touchdown came from 17 yards out. McGloin also hit Devon Smith for 36 yards and Justin Brown for 19 for some of the scrimmages biggest plays. wide receiver Evan Lewis. McGloin was not perfect however; he did fumble a center/quarterback exchange early in the contest.

Kevin Newsome, who was once held in the same light as Bolden, a highly touted recruit with remarkable talent, went 3-7 on the day for 22 yards. He looked lost at times and did fumble the ball on what appeared to be a broken play. There were several reports indicating that Newsome was having a good spring, but his play Saturday contradicted those reports. In talking with reporters after the game, he was also non-committal on his future in the Blue and White. Some of his comments to reporters indicated that he might already have one foot out the door.

Paul Jones, another blue chip prospect on the roster, happens to be the least controversial of the squad’s quarterbacks. He is never mentioned as someone who isn’t content at Penn State, or has any plans of leaving the University if he doesn’t get a shot at being QB-1. The redshirt freshman was 0-1 on the day. There is a possible scenario, should Bolden and Newsome both leave the program, that Jones is just one snap away from prime time this fall.

Other than the four quarterbacks, there were also other players on the field Saturday. However, there were 19 players who did not participate Saturday because of injury or illness. The notable of those 19 were safeties Drew Astorino and Nick Sukay, wide receiver Derek Moye and defensive ends Jack Crawford and Eric Latimore. All are expected to be at full speed when Penn State kicks off its 125th season on September 3rd against Indiana State.

When the Nittany Lions start the 2011 campaign, they will return 15 starters (7 on offense, 7 on defense and 1 specialist), as well as 17 other players who have starting experience. September 3rd is a long way off though, which mean there are 134 days to analyze and psychoanalyze who is going to be the starting quarterback. The bigger question in Happy Valley leading up until the season opener may not be who the starting quarterback is, rather, will Rob Bolden and Kevin Newsome still be on the roster?

Some of the best trout fishing streams in the state (some say the entire country) are located right here in Centre County. Three of them, Elk Creek, Penns Creek, and Sinking Creek pass through rural Penns Valley, and they always draw a crowd of hopeful anglers on the opening day of trout fishing season.

This year’s opening day, Saturday, April 16, brought anglers out in smaller than usual numbers due to the cold temperatures and drenching rain which fell most of the day. Those who did come out to fish dressed for the day with layers of clothing to keep warm, and hooded plastic rain suits to keep dry. Many of these folks are the “hard core” anglers who take their hobby seriously. I saw several people carrying stringers full of good size trout, proving that fish can be caught even in a cold rain with the right bait and techniques. To these folks, the rewards of fishing were certainly worth enduring the discomfort of the bad weather.

Better weather will return (soon, I hope), and the banks of the local streams will be lined with fishermen (and women) enjoying their hobby, hauling out the fish for which this area is known.

We wish them all the best of luck throughout the fishing season.

Johnson Squeaks Out Close in at Talladega

At Talladega Motor Speedway, if you are going to have a shot at the checkered flag, you have to avoid the “big one”. Or in the case of a Hendricks Motorsports teammate, pushing your teammate across the start/ finish line would earn you the checkered flag as well, and you didn’t even have to win the race!

Jimmie Johnson came out of turn number four with teammate Dale Earnhart Jr. tight against his bumper. At the time, Johnson was running in 5th place. In a matter of a couple hundred feet, he was edging out Clint Bowyer, who led a race high 38 laps, by .002 seconds (tied for the closest finish in Spring Cup history) to win the Aarons 499. The race

featured 88 lead changes by 26 different drivers, tying the record set last year at, where else, Talladega.

The photo finish left fans on the edge of their seat, as Nascar officials needed to revert to the electronic timing to determine whose bumper crossed the finish line first. Following Bowyer who wound up finish second, were fellow Johnson teammate Jeff Gordon, Earnahrt, and Kevin Harvick.

The Spring Cup Series has this week off, and will resume their season on Saturday April 30th at Richmond International Raceway in the Crown Royal 400.

The Penns Valley Men’s Chorus, Directed by Daniel Warntz, sang three numbers from their repertoire of gospel songs, followed by two numbers from the Little German Band. The Four Decades followed with two songs in their four-part, barbershop harmonic style.
