Editor’s Prologue

We’ve had the same question on our Web site for a long time now. Should we include political news in The Gazette? This issue holds an experiment on that topic. I offered a onetime-only forum for candidates in the May 13 primary to write letters explaining their ideas and/or qualifications. Seven prospective public servants participated – one judge, one school board, and five county commissioner candidates. Some even bought advertising, for which we are always grateful. It allows us to publish FREE for you, our readers.

Let me know what you think of this forum and if you’d like to see it repeated in the fall.

Local government, is responsible, in part, for ensuring that Centre County continues to be a good place to live, work, and play.

In other news this week, the people of Spring Mills are coming together to share and build local history with personal photos and letters from the past. The Bellefonte Museum reopened and celebrated their new exhibit, The Artful Dog, which Brian Baney artfully photographed. The readers’ jackpot, the AAUW Used Book Sale, is coming up. Kulsoom got us the scoop on where and when, including a layout of the Ag Arena so you can dash directly to the topics of your choice.

Brian Bassett discovered another Hometown Hero, this one helping our young men (and women) discover a rewarding career through State High’s CTC. Mr. Warren is indeed a parent’s dream, and a student’s inspiration!

The Red Cross, Centre County Children & Youth, and the State College Borough lauded volunteers this week – good neighbors who help with blood drives, serve as foster parents, and promote or increase the quality of life in the borough.

Speaking of helping out, clean out your pantry or go to the grocery store and get your donations ready for the Postal Workers Stamp Out Hunger food drive on the 14th.

There’s also plenty of entertainment and sports news, from the upcoming Nittany Knights concert to last weekend’s roller derby scrimmage, from Tommy Dorsey at The State to a lovely new piece of land being added to Rothrock State Forest.

Our event calendars keep on growing, with plenty of plant sales, a German genealogical event, Spirit of the Amazon fundraiser, arboretum tour, Asian Tea Garden event, Empty Bowl event, antique car show at the Grange Fairgrounds, a candlelight vigil, and a benefit zumbathon! Not to mention the ever-popular walks, runs, chicken barbecues, yard sales, and children’s fairs.

Next issue – lotsa green. Golf and gardening, two seasonal passions. We’ll offer lawn and garden tips from the experts, plus events and attractions like the upcoming Frog Festival and Master Gardener plant sale. We’ll try to include info on each of the golf courses in the county, plus a few others. We’d also like to announce your charity golf events, so send me your dates, start times, prizes, foursome costs, and who benefits.

Don’t forget to do something nice for your mom this weekend. If you can’t be there, call her. Don’t just tell her how you love her – tell her why you love her! It’ll make her day.

Centre Count y Schools BEA Junior Wins State Award for Poster

Bald Eagle Area 11th-grade student Carol Ann Fayman was named as one of the top entries in the 2010-11 Alcohol Awareness Poster Contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. The contest challenged students of all ages to create a poster discouraging underage drinking.

This year, more than 900 entries were submitted to Harrisburg. Carol Ann’s poster was one of 47 chosen for higher recognition, and she received a $50 US savings bond.

The winning posters were exhibited in the Capitol Rotunda in Harrisburg from April 18 through April 22.

All of the posters sent important messages concerning the prevention of underage drinking and promoting safe and healthy alternative activities.

National Park Week at BEA State College Excel in Technology Competition

As you walk into the library at the Bald Eagle MiddleHigh School, a group of books with bright yellow titles immediately catches your attention. Librarian Jessica Yost and Library Assistant Kathy Ryba set up the display in honor of National Park Week, which was April 16 to 24. BEA staff joined in by bringing items for the display – a pinecone from the California redwood forests, small plastic horses to represent Assateague National Park, and other items from national parks at Harpers Ferry, Gettysburg and the Badlands.

The 12-book set on America’s National Parks, recently purchased by the Bald Eagle Area School District, includes information on Acadia, Cape Hatteras, Denali, Everglades, Glacier, Grand Canyon, Great Smoky Mountains, Hawaii Volcanoes, Olympic, Rocky Mountain, Yellowstone, and Yosemite.

Ms. Yost says the books are generating interesting discussions in the library, such as “how does a geyser work?” The ninth-grade Honors Geography students will also make good use of the book set, as they are required to complete research papers on the national parks.

STATE COLLEGE – Students from State College High School, Mount Nittany Middle School, and Park Forest Middle School competed in the Pennsylvania State Technology Student Association (TSA) Conference held in Seven Springs on April 13 to 16. Students did exceptionally well and placed in categories ranging from Global Manufacturing to Biotechnology Design.

Forty-five members of State College Area High School attended the TSA conference; 23 competed in the ninthand tenth-grade chapter, and 22 competed in the eleventhand twelfth-grade chapter. The eleventh- and twelfth-grade chapter received the Inspiration Award for the work done by Pindi Albert, supported by all the chapter members, for promotion of Advanced Level Technological Activities in their school district for the online chapter management system.

The TSA Web site states, “This award was created to encourage and recognize chapters’ involvement with their communities, such as community service, mentoring, and other contributions to your local, state, and/or TSA communities.”

In the ninth- and tenth-grade chapter, 12 students placed in their competition, and 22 students placed in the eleventhand twelfth-grade chapter. The three System Control teams from State High swept the first, second and third places, a first for State High, and the first time TSA experienced the top three places going to the same high school.

Park Forest and Mount Nittany Middle Schools also sent students to compete. Mount Nittany had seven top-ten finalists and Park Forest had 12 top-ten finalists. Students utilized the skills they learned in the classroom to compete in their respective events.

Hometown Heroes

Charles “Chris� Warren Students Learn Honest, Ethical, Practical Building Skills from a Master Mentor

Charles “Chris� Warren grew up in a small farming town in central Massachusetts on a Black Angus farm. A graduate of Gettysburg College with a BS in Business, he’d be a simple “transplant� from MA if not for the fact that he spent summers in State College since his birth.

Chris’ mother is a State College native; she and his father graduated from Pennsylvania State University. Joe Bedenk, his grandfather, was PSU football coach in 1949 and baseball coach from 1931 to 1962. This gives him even greater “native� roots. He met his wife, who is also a PSU graduate, here in 1993.

Some of his fondest memories include serving as a batboy for summer ball, swimming at the Elks, and the skylines of College and Beaver Avenues in the 1960s and ’70s when there were few buildings higher than two stories.

Warren confessed to always having a desire to move to State College, develop a business and raise his family – however the responsibilities of running a successful building and land-development company in the Reading area kept him from acting on his dream.

Two years ago he finally decided to relocate to State College with his wife and three children rather than move forward with two, 20-acre subdivisions in New York state’s Finger Lake area. He left the uncertain housing industry to re-invent himself in Centre County when he applied for and accepted the Building Construction Technology instructor position.

Chris had many high school and college students work summers for him over the years – and always enjoyed building and nourishing the passion they had for the trade.

Builders, friends, and customers teased him about the “TechSchool Company� he operated – because of the number of young men who, after working for him, left to start their own businesses.

“When I called Barry King, the Career Technology Center director, for information on the position,� Chris recalled, “he outlined the expectations and qualifications for the job – and I knew I was qualified.

“Well, there it was,� Chris said. “State College was a great area to raise a family and there was a business opportunity to develop. The timing suddenly seemed right, so we did it.�

Warren was intrigued by the possibilities he foresaw.

The older, vocational-style program was being scrapped.

State College Area High School wished to incorporate a new approach comprising residential home construction, green- and smart-home applications, alternative energy, and industry certifications – and he was going to be right in the middle of things where he could make difference and help young students find their niche in life.

He stressed that his motivation comes from the talent, passion, and desire most students have to do well and love what they do. He has enjoyed the building business since he was 12 and worked for a local builder – endlessly pounding nails in subflooring before nail guns were invented. Chris believes that most of his students have the same love for the business; and finds it hard to ignore a young man’s desire to be successful.

Studying Blueprints “My eventual goal is to develop a program that will provide industry certification, college ties and preparatory; but also career integration and direct employment,� Chris explained. “A teacher or instructor will never place every student in the right spot, but with the right program and SCASD support there is no reason we can’t be one of the best in the state. I also want to continue community ties and support, Habitat for Humanity, local Builders Association integration-advanced curriculum, and the need for respect and integrity.�

The BCT instructor oversees three levels of integrated, residential home-construction instruction in the program.

Every aspect, trade, material, and function of building a home is taught, including but not limited to concrete, masonry, framing, electrical, plumbing, all HVAC systems, drywall, trim work, flooring, painting, roofing, and siding.

BCT curriculum is based on the National Association of Home Builders-certified texts and is supplemented by Green Building, Alternative Energy, Sustainability, and business employment trade books and journals.

“Our focus is not only curriculum-based but commonsense and skill-based. I determine success in life and business from what I call a 60/40 model. Sixty percent is the knowledge a student has, and 40 percent is the extent of his presentation, life, and delivery skills of the 60-percent knowledge he has.

It’s one thing to know how to do something – but you need to be able to demonstrate it. I expect complete professionalism and try to lead and teach by example. Our instruction emphasizes respect, integrity, teamwork, compassion, safety, and honesty. We develop more than just a builder or contractor. We graduate students with the essential skills they need to be successful contributors to society.�

BUSINESS BRIEF

Huntingdon County FCU to Merge with SPE Federal Credit Union

The members of Huntingdon County Federal Credit Union (HCFCU) agreed to merge with SPE Federal Credit Union (SPEFCU) at a special meeting on Friday, April 29. HCFCU, based in Huntingdon, has approximately 2,200 members and $12 million in assets as of March 31, 2011. SPE, based in State College, has 8,500 members and $66 million in assets.

When the merger is complete, the members of HCFCU will automatically become members of SPEFCU.

According to a statement issued by the HCFCU board of directors, “Some time ago Huntingdon County’s management and the board of directors decided it would be appropriate to investigate the possibility of merging with another credit union‌ to ensure members had access to products and services available at other credit unions

at competitive prices. The boards of directors at both credit unions unanimously voted to accept the proposal offered by SPEFCU to merge.�

The HCFCU directors further agreed to put the proposed merger to the membership for a vote to accept the recommendation to merge.

“This is a great merger and will continue to be a solid partnership between two credit unions that have similar philosophies and a commitment to the credit union cooperative movement,� said SPE President/CEO Russell Brooks.

Because SPE has obtained a community charter that encompasses all of Huntingdon County, all persons who live, work, worship, go to school and volunteer in Huntingdon County now automatically qualify for membership in the credit union.

The BCT program incorporates three levels.

Level One: • Hand- and power-tools basics related to jobsite construction. • Site work, excavation, concrete work, block work, green framing techniques, siding, and roofing.

Level Two: • Begin constructing a real, 16- by 24-foot modular home from framing. • Wire the electric, install the plumbing and heating systems, drywall, and finish trim. • This year will focus on energy-efficiency and “GreenBuildingâ€? techniques.

Level Three: • Finish the “Eco-Cabinâ€? house begun in level two. • Study the business models of construction companies, sustainability, and alternative energy.

“There are two, Penn College dual-enrollment courses integrated into the BCT curriculum for which students may earn college credits,� Chris said. “We frame a home for Habitat for Humanity; and we also concentrate on advanced tools of the trade. We participate in the local Builders Show by having a booth and a community-interactive demonstration. Students also get industry certification in Uponor Pex, Gastite, Certain Teed siding, GAF shingles, and TGI framing.

When asked for some words of wisdom, Chris was quick to respond with, “Treat kids better than they think they are – and you make them become better than you think they could be.�

UNIVERSITY PARK – The American Association of University Women, State College Branch, is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its annual Used Book Sale. The branch held its first sale in 1962 and raised $179.17. Gross sales are much different nowadays. In 2010, the sale increased 10 percent over the previous year, raising $139,413.84.

The proceeds from the sale support undergraduate scholarships for adult women returning to school and community grants to local nonprofits who support the AAUW’s mission. It also supports local education and library projects.

Volunteers work all year to make the event possible by collecting, organizing, and pricing books.

“The book workshop is a special place. The volunteers come because they believe in the cause but also for the camaraderie and sense of community�, says Ellen Grubb, AAUW volunteer. “The book sale provides the backbone for the branch, both in membership and mission, and also brings attention to our other important activities. We are proud of what we have accomplished over these 50 years, for the opportunity to recycle books into dollars, and to fund countless nonprofits and scholarships for deserving women.�

The sale will be from May 7 to 10 at the Snider Agricultural Arena on the Penn State Campus. Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday, May 9th is Half-Price Day and Tuesday, May 10th is Bag Day. On Bag Day, customers will be able to buy a bag of books for $5.00.

How You Can Help Annual “Stamp Out Hunger” Food Drive

Saturday, May 14 will mark the annual Letter Carrier Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, the nation’s largest single-day food drive. This drive helps put food on the tables of millions of Americans who can’t afford to feed themselves and their families. Two local food pantries, the FaithCentre Food Bank and the State College Area Food Bank, are helping to organize this local effort and help Centre Region neighbors participate in the national campaign.

According to the National Association of Letter Carriers to Help Stamp out Hunger, the Stamp Out Hunger food drive, now in its 19th year, is always held on the second Saturday in May. It has become the nation’s largest single-day food drive. In 2010, drive organizers representing nearly 1,500 U.S. Post Office branches across the country, collected a record-setting total of 77.1 million pounds of food donations. This pushed the historical total for the drive to more than one billion pounds of food.

To participate in the Stamp Out Hunger drive, residents are encouraged to leave a sturdy bag containing non-perishable foods, such as canned soup, canned vegetables, pasta, rice, or cereal next to their mailbox prior to the time of regular mail delivery on Saturday, May 14. Then their letter carriers will collect these food donations as they deliver the mail and take them to their Feeding America-affiliated food bank or other hunger-relief organization that serves the more than 10,000 communities where collections are being made.

Donations may also be left in the lobbies of these post offices and also in the Pine Grove Mills, Boalsburg, Lemont, Milesburg, and Mingoville post office lobbies.

Last year the State College Letter Carriers collected 27,743 pounds of food and the Bellefonte Letter Carriers collected 11,355 pounds of food.

Some of the local needs include: • Grocery store gift cards - any denomination is appreciated and is used to maintain food inventory and supplement what they don’t receive in food donations.

• Canned beets, carrots, potatoes • Canned mandarin oranges and fruit cocktail • Muffin mixes • Canned meat (tuna, chicken, etc.)

• Pasta and pasta sauce • Tomato products • Laundry detergent and bar soap • Granulated sugar • Mayonnaise, Miracle Whip and salad dressings • Cooking Oil • Coffee and/or black tea • Personal hygiene items (toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, etc.), and baby items (baby food, diapers, formula, etc.).

STATE COLLEGE - The State College Borough Council hosted the 2010 ABC Appreciation Dinner on April 21 at The Atherton Hotel. This annual event recognizes the contributions of the borough’s more than 100 volunteer-members of its Authorities, Boards, Commissions, and Committees. Several individuals received special recognition for their contributions to State College.

The Legacy Award is given to a group or an individual who has contributed significantly to improving the quality of community life for borough residents. Council President Ronald Filippelli (left) presented this year’s Legacy Award to Dolores Taricani (right) for her many years of work, philanthropy and volunteerism in downtown State College. Over the years, Mrs. Taracani has been involved in many organizations and currently serves on the board of directors for the Downtown State College Improvement District, the Centre County Community Foundation, Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church Council, and the Thompson Woods Neighborhood Association.

The Ingrid P. Holtzman Award is presented annually to recognize a worthy individual, organization, company, or corporation who has enhanced, promoted, or maintained the aesthetic appearance of the Borough of State College. The Arnold Addison Award was presented by council member Theresa Lafer (center) to Assistant Vice President for Police and Public Safety at Penn State, Stephen Shelow, and State College Borough Police Chief Thomas King. This award is given to an individual(s) or group who has promoted the quality of life in the community through improved town/gown relations. Mr. Shelow (left) and Chief King (right) have collaborated on many initiatives and programs resulting in the strongest and most effective partnership between university and downtown police in the country. Some of these programs include F8 (First Eight Weeks) which educates new and returning students; Partnership United Against Dangerous Drinking; SIP (Source Investigation Project) to determine where alcohol was served or being served to minors; and DSEP (Downtown Safety Enforcement Project) where PSU Student Auxiliary officers walk foot patrol in the downtown during the night time and report criminal activity as well as provide uniform prevention presence.

The XYZ Award is presented to an individual who has provided outstanding community service through their membership on an Authority, Board or Commission. Ellen Perry, board member and 2011 Volunteer of the Year recipient thanked volunteers and donors for their contributions to the chapter.

UNIVERSITY PARK – The local chapter of the Red Cross held an awards ceremony AND breakfast for its many hard-working and devoted volunteers on Saturday (4/30) at the Nittany Lion Inn.

Executive Director, Virginia Brown started the program with welcoming remarks and by briefly going over the history of the organization and its current status.

“Through our blood program, you helped us to collect almost 17,000 units of life-saving blood in the 2009 to 2010 fiscal year,” she said addressing the audience of volunteers. “Your support makes a difference every day.”

Naila Rahman, the Education chair of the Penn State Student Red Cross Club took the podium next to share a special story about how the Red Cross changed her life. Rahman said she had been an avid blood donor until April of 2008 when she went to a blood drive one day and the

phlebotomist told her she was ineligible to give blood, because her blood pressure was too high.

After three months of tests at the hospital, Rahman was diagnosed with a rare disease called mpgm take 3, which has no cure right now.

Rahman went through several treatment processes and one at John Hopkins as well.

“When I got to John Hopkins, they told me that if I hadn’t gone to donate blood that day, I probably would have died two weeks later,” she said. She also talked about how people get a free check up when they go to donate blood, so they find out if anything is wrong, just like in her case.

“And for me it was a matter of life and death,” said Rahman.

Many different awards were presented throughout the course of the program to people who donate their time and efforts for leadership and disaster services.

Pizza Mia, a restaurant located in Bellefonte received the Business Partnership Award this year.

According to Judi Henry, Blood Services Coordinator who presented the award, Pizza Mia has been supporting blood drives for six years.

“The economy was going down, but this business said ‘We’re here to help you and we’ll do that,’” Henry said. She also said that Pizza Mia has supplied thousands and thousands of pizzas to Red Cross donors, despite it being an expense for them.

“Their commitment to the Red Cross is absolutely refreshing and wonderful.”

Volunteers with 10 and 15 years of service were recognized with special pins. Chapter Volunteer of the Year, Ellen Perry, also spoke, but did not take all the glory for her self. Addressing her fellow volunteers, she said, “You have given and given in so many different ways, all of which is appreciated.

In the beginning of the Fall and Spring semesters, Innoblue at University Park accepts entrepreneurs into their three-month program. Markus Zusak is a brilliant author. His books are “fresh, engrossing, well conceived, and touching” to quote his many reviews. I have to add my own opinion; Markus Zusak may be categorized as a Young Adult author, but he is one of my favorites. (To be perfectly honest, I do not qualify as a young adult.)

I Am the Messenger is Ed Kennedy’s story. Ed is hardly the type to find himself the hero of anything, let alone a full-length book. He is an underage cabdriver, a pathetic

card player, his best friends are losers, and he is completely devoted to his dog, Doorman, who has bodyodor issues.

After Ed earns some brief fame for capturing a very incompetent bank robber, he receives an ace of diamonds in the mail with three addresses written on it. As he visits each house, he slowly becomes aware of what he is expected to do. One house has a husband who comes home each night to beat and rape his wife. One home has a lonely, elderly woman and in another home is a young girl who gets up each morning to train for a track event.

A Proposition: Rural Gasification

One of the biggest challenges for the next administration is going to be the budget. There has never been long-range planning for the budget at the county level.

This one of the reasons there was a 23-percent tax increase last year, a 3-percent surplus this year, and talk of tax increases for next year. As county commissioner I will have a long-range financial plan. That’s where my expertise in finance will benefit the county. I’ve been helping businesses and individuals with their budgets and finances for more than 12 years.

Another area that needs to be addressed at the county is more responsiveness and accountability to the public. If the community comes to me with a concern (such as Children and Youth) I will look into it and give you an honest assessment of the situation. When elected I will have a minimum of one open meeting a month at a set place and time in the evening for your input. The current commissioners meet Tuesday mornings when most people can’t attend. There has been a lot of talk about the lack of cooperation of the current and past commissioners, an open meeting to have to face the public once a month will help.

The Marcellus shale drilling is a big concern for many people in Centre County.

I feel that the drilling is good for the country, but I see very little long-term value for the county. My understanding is that the people and businesses of the county will see little to none of the gas that’s extracted and most will be piped out of the state. It’s putting a strain on our roads and infrastructure and without the ability to tax them, your local taxes may go up to pay for the repairs. The risk to the water and the environment must be addressed; I have suggested that dye be added to the fracking water. That way everyone knows where the fracking water is, the drillers won’t have frivolous law suits, and you will know if your water is contaminated.

One of my strengths is that I’m solution-oriented. As commissioner I want to hear from you and your ideas. I hear on the campaign trail that it’s a state problem or it’s a municipality problem, if you’re in Centre County it would be my problem. Relevant Comments: I have always been and continue to be an advocate for the Penns Valley School District and its teachers. Having said that, I would hope to assist in the continuation of the best practices in education for our district.

I am concerned about the proposed state level budgets cuts as well as the proposed voucher system. The effects of these decisions on our children’s education are paramount. Should these decisions come to fruition, along with a committed school board and administration, I would be looking for ways to achieve quality education, teacher support, and a positive and safe learning environment within the proposed budgetary constraints.

Centre County has gas...... and lots of it. We are sitting on the second largest natural gas reserve in the WORLD, the Marcellus Shale. Unfortunately most of the gas is piped out of the county and out of the state leaving behind the impacts but very few benefits. It’s being piped elsewhere because we have an inadequate distribution system, especially in our more rural communities, thus many of our residents are not benefiting from this abundant energy source.

I would like to propose a “Rural Gasification” initiative. We had a similar program in the 1930s under FDR with the enactment of Rural Electrification Act (REA) of 1936 enacted in the midst of the Great Depression. REA provided funds that were channeled through cooperative electric power companies, most of which still exist today. These member-owned cooperatives purchased power on a wholesale basis and distributed it using their own network of transmission and distribution lines.

I’m not suggesting another government program, but rather a private/public partnership facilitated by our County Government. The partnership would develop investment capital and work cooperatively with the gas companies to expand the distribution system for natural gas in communities such as Snow Shoe, Milesburg, Philipsburg, Boalsburg, and Lemont. The communities in the Bald Eagle and Nittany valleys and others would also benefit by such a program.

The benefits of increasing natural gas use are significant:

• Natural gas is an efficient and environmentally friendly energy source.

• It produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions than coal or oil.

• At current prices, it costs about 60 percent less to heat a home with natural gas as compared to heating oil or electricity. Our residents would save real dollars that would benefit our local economy rather than being sent overseas.

• The increased use of natural gas will lessen our dependence on foreign oil and decrease the pressure on our electric utilities to produce more electricity with less desirable fuels.

• Also, the creation of fueling stations and incentives to convert vehicles could save at the gas pump.

This is real Economic Development that would increase spendable income, attract new business, create new jobs, and increase our tax base.

We can no longer depend on Washington or Harrisburg to act; we have the means locally to control our destiny and create a better future for our residents. We have a unique opportunity in Centre County to achieve energy independence and create real economic development. A privately funded “Rural Gasification” initiative facilitated by our local county government can become a model for others to follow.

Centre County needs the leadership to make this happen.

Streamlining Court Proceedings

Candidate for Judge, Centre County Court of Common Pleas

Why should readers of the Gazette vote for me for County Judge? I have the right kind of experience, the recognition from experts, and a program for the future.

As a District Judge for the past eight years, an attorney, and a teacher, I bring a broad range of experience to the position of county judge. I am ready to work on day one because I have made thousands of judicial decisions and managed my own Court. Partnering with non-profits, I incorporate problem-solving court programs that help kids and families heal. If we break the cycle of crime, we protect lawabiding citizens and we save money for taxpayers. Studies show that for every dollar we spend on problem solving, we save almost five dollars in court costs and other forms of government spending.

Our Pennsylvania Supreme Court recognized me for my judicial accomplishments by appointing me to the Minor Judiciary Education Board. I am one of four judges who set the training and certification requirements for the 540 Minor Court Judges throughout our State.

Our PA State Police Fraternal Order of Police endorsed my campaign because I have gained the respect and support of the law enforcement community. The Ferguson Township Police Association also endorsed me. These are the only police organizations that endorsed in this primary.

As a teacher, between two appointments, I teach four courses. I am Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Instructor for the statewide Deputy Sheriff’s Academy.

For Penn State, I teach American Courts and Intro to Law.

If you elect me County Judge, I want to work on two areas where I think we can do a better job. First, the current handling of domestic violence and mental health issues is inconsistent, inefficient, and wastes tax dollars. These cases should be removed from the general court caseload. A specialized domestic violence court would increase defendant accountability, promote victim safety, and better coordinate agency response. In addition, having a single judge handle criminal, custody, and divorce cases involving the same parties promotes consistency in court decisions.

Also, nonviolent, small crime mental-health offenders continually recycle ineffectively through the court system. Instead, I would like to initiate and supervise a community-based treatment plan involving a team of court staff and mental health professionals to make sure mentally challenged people receive proper treatment and support so they stop being repeat offenders. Recently I served on the Mentally Ill Offender Housing Needs Assessment Committee. That committee’s conclusions are a good starting point for addressing this issue.

I think these changes are well worth making, but I cannot do it without your support. I humbly ask for your vote on May 17, and promise I will not disappoint you.

I am a candidate for County Commissioner because I believe the people of Centre County need leadership they can believe in again. We deserve to have leaders we can respect and trust to meet our needs – because that’s what Centre County government is all about; serving the needs of our people both now, and with planning, in the future.

I am in my 18th year of public service as an elected official in Centre County.

The voters have placed their trust and confidence in me to do the job I am elected to do. I am currently the Republican Jury Commissioner and work at the court house. Prior to this I was a Tax Collector for Howard Township, Bald Eagle Area School District, and Centre County. This combined experience and service to our county has given me a broad background in how Centre County government works.

I have also been a business owner for over 30 years. I am currently managing an Independent Shaklee distributorship and am a national wellness and environmental consultant. Prior to this, I was the owner of Miller Floral for 13 years.

As Centre County faces unknown state and federal budget cuts, we need to find new opportunities for revenue to relieve the tax burden from real estate. We need to bring new industry into the area with good paying, family sustaining jobs. The challenges that await the next board of commissioners are many; but with strong leadership, innovative ideas, and hard work, I am convinced we can turn these challenges into opportunities that will help us ride out this economic storm and secure our future with controlled spending, reduced debt, and no tax increases. We can’t afford it.

I’m about ensuring the financial security of our county for future generations; making sure our young people have jobs when they graduate from high school and college, to keep their talents in Centre County if they choose to do so, keeping our families close; and guaranteeing the solvency of Centre Crest so that our loved ones have a respectable place to live while managing their health when the need arises. Everyone deserves that dignity, and as their caretakers, we deserve to have options in their care management.

We need a leader with integrity, with compassion for listening to our needs, with strength to make the important decisions and take action even in adversity. Economic Challenges

My name is Jeff Steiner and I am one of the Democratic candidates for Centre County Commissioner.

As a contracted employee of the county doing social work for over 10 years I have a strong understanding of our county government and the services it provides to you, your family, and your neighbors. I serve on the Bellefonte Area School District Board of Education and also as the Inspector of Elections for Spring Southwest.

Two of the greatest challenges facing our commissioners over the next four years will be economic development and the county budget.

Many of our friends will lose their jobs when Jostens moves to Tennessee.

This situation highlighted an apparent gap in the public/private effort to recruit the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company to our area.

Clarksville Tennessee had an attractive tax reduction program that helped to draw in Jostens. There was no such program on the table for the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company. The competition for big time employers like Sierra Nevada is too great to not have some kind of package like that available.

An example would be a tax abatement program offering an 11-year phasing in of school, township and county taxes – no taxes in year one, 10 percent of assessed taxes in year two, 20 percent of assessed taxes in year three, etc. Upon full payment of taxes in year 11, title transfer of property in full.

Our commissioners have to take the lead in developing a plan like this, and if elected this will be something I will immediately begin to work on.

Government at every level faces the daunting commitments of retirement and health care benefits for employees. The county’s current budget shows a 22 percent increase in retirement contributions and the county certainly is not immune to the increasing cost of health care that we all face. The pending 9-1-1 system upgrade will cost in the range of 20 million dollars – a figure that would encompass a fourth of the county’s budget.

The deep cuts to education from the state this year are almost assuredly the prelude to major cuts to human services funding in the next few years. If the community at large is unable to make up the difference, significant cuts in reimbursements or running grants from Harrisburg will force gut-wrenching choices between letting crucial services such as housing assistance programs cease to exist versus increasing the local tax burden to keep these services in place at a time when everyone is already hard-pressed to make ends meet.

Prior to beginning my campaign for County Commissioner I took stock of my experiences and how they translate to the role of County Commissioner. As a life-long resident of Centre County I have fond memories of growing up in Brush Valley; working summers on local farms and setting up tents at the Grange Fair.

I left our community to serve my country in Europe and returned home to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree from Lock Haven University. I have made a life here; raised my family, helped build a successful construction business, and now have the good fortune to watch my grandchildren grow up here as well.

Ten years of experience as a leader in local and regional government has given me insights into effective governance. Having twice chaired my township’s Council and as the current chairman of a regional government public-safety committee I understand there are always differences of opinion. That reality does not mean that leaders cannot work together to solve issues important to our constituents. My experience tells me it can be so.

Like you, I know how much Centre County has to offer. In fact, we have too much to offer to see businesses move out of our communities and miss out on opportunities to bring new businesses to our county. One of my priorities as County Commissioner will be to lead a collaborative effort to expand economic development across the county.

The county already possesses many fine public and private business associations, organizations, and industrial and redevelopment authorities but lacks a single countywide point-of-contact for new company prospects. The county’s Department of Planning and Community Development could very capably serve in this role as well as provide administrative support to track available sites and buildings and assist in the various marketing efforts of these existing organizations. Best of all, these things can be done at little to no cost to taxpayers either through the use of current staff or by reviewing the allocation of existing funds now directed toward economic development initiatives.

Mending Hearts… A Message of Hope Contributed by Mending Hearts Ministry

This is a rather unusual running event/fundraiser, since it allows the participating runners to take their dogs with They’re off and running in the 5K run. them on the run. According Deb Warner. to Dog Jog organizer, Deb Warner, 155 runners were registered to run, with 100 dogs running. At 10 a.m., after everyone was registered, the runners (both dog and human) were all lined up on the pavement on the Grange Fair midway, and, on Deb Warner’s signal, they were off and running! The course made a five-kilometer (3.1 miles) loop around the fairgrounds, returning to the finish line near the exhibit buildings.

The first ones across the finish line were Tom Cali, and his dog Tigger. One at a time, or in small groups, the others followed, with the human runners seemingly more exhausted than the dogs! Both dogs and people helped themselves to water and snacks after the run. There was plenty of panting, drooling, and sniffing – and that was just the people (rimshot!), Ha, ha!

In addition to the running events, there were numerous exhibits by animal-themed organizations and businesses located in one of the exhibit buildings. Several animal rescue groups were present with informative displays, and knowledgeable representatives informing the public about their activities.

ClearWater Receives Grant for Land Purchase Contributed by ClearWater Conservancy

HARRIS TOWNSHIP – ClearWater Conservancy has been awarded a $350,000 state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant for the purchase and permanent conservation of 152 acres of land in the Galbraith Gap area of Harris Township, Centre County.

“We are very pleased to receive this grant because it provides us with half of the necessary funding to purchase the property,” said ClearWater’s conservation biologist Katie Ombalski. “Permanently conserving this property will protect important wildlife habitat, water quality and a locally treasured recreational gateway for future generations.”

ClearWater has an agreement to buy the Tussey Mountain property, owned by Chip Aikens of Bellefonte, for $685,440.

With closing costs and related expenses, the total cost of acquisition is approximately $706,000. Once the purchase is complete, the conservancy will convey the property to DCNR Bureau of Forestry for incorporation into the adjacent Rothrock State Forest.

The Community Conservation Partnerships Program grant is the third grant ClearWater has received. A National Fish and Wildlife Federation grant for $94,000 and a $9,000 Huplits Trust grant distributed by the Sierra Club were previously awarded. ClearWater plans to raise the rest of the funds through other means, including public fundraising.

The purchase of Aikens’ property will benefit residents and visitors to Centre County and the native flora and fauna inhabiting the sensitive habitats of Galbraith Gap.

The gap serves as the main recreational gateway to Rothrock State Forest for hikers, birdwatchers, mountain

bikers, hunters and cross country skiers.

Conservation of the Aikens’ parcel will allow the expansion of existing trail systems and provide new recreational opportunities.

The Aikens tract is within the Greater Tussey Mountain and Stone Mountain Important Bird Areas and Central Mountains Important Mammal Area. Conservation of the property will also buffer the adjacent Shingletown Gap Biological Diversity Area.

The 2,400-foot long unnamed tributary to Galbraith Gap Run coursing through the center of Aikens’ land will be fully protected, as will the eastern hemlocks that cool the water of the tributary with their shade, making it possible for native brook trout to thrive there. Volunteers Bring Life to Bellefonte Museum Photos & article by Brian Baney

BELLEFONTE – Sunday, May 1 saw the re-opening of the Bellefonte Museum at 133 North Allegheny Street. The first floor gallery played host to The Artful Dog, a collection of paintings, photos, figurines, and antiques.

Along with the canine collection, the museum had a display of photos of local pets on exhibit. This fundraiser, Gallery of Pets, will assist Centre County PAWS and the museum with an array of expenses to come.

If you have a photo of your pet and want to display it in the Gallery of Pets, send it along with a $5 contribution for each photo.

Photos become the property of the museum and they will not be returned. Your check should be made out to the Bellefonte Museum and mailed to P.O. Box 125, Bellefonte, Pa. 16823.

The museum provided refreshments for the visitors, and volunteers were on hand to answer any question concerning the exhibit or questions concerning the Linn house, the home of the museum.

I was most fortunate to have the company of Ms. Millie Baker Ragosta. This woman, I swear, is a walking, talking history book. Her knowledge of Bellefonte had this fan engrossed for nearly an hour. Ms Ragosta was stationed on the second floor to meet and greet visitors. For the first hour of the opening, I was the lucky visitor who had the poor woman cornered. What a joy it was to sit and listen to her stories of the Linn house, its lineage of ownership, its ups and downs throughout the centuries, and best of all, what the future holds for this magnificent house.

The exhibit, The Artful Dog, was a big hit. As I sat on the second floor with Ms Ragosta, the front door could be heard opening time and time again. The noise level rose steadily, as curious folks crossed the threshold of the historic home.

As you can see in the photographs, there was a wide array of art on display. Photos, paintings, figurines, and one framed work of art that was actually painstakingly

crocheted with so much detail, it looked like a painting.

All of the artists are owed a debt of gratitude. Their works of art kicked off the exhibition season for the Bellefonte Museum. The Artful Dog exhibition is the start of what the volunteers hope to be a successful schedule of events for 2011.

There will be exhibitions throughout the rest of the year. Each month the museum will bring our community art works of many artists, subjects, and themes. As you enter, a volunteer will greet you with a welcoming smile and pass on their undying adoration for their hometown and their in-depth knowledge of its past – a past that changed life as we know it, a past we can look back on with pride.

In the coming months, more rooms will be renovated and put to use. One such room planned is the children’s creativity center, which is sure to be a big hit with the kids.

If you are interested in the arts and the history of Bellefonte and Centre County as a whole, then the Bellefonte Museum will be the place to be in the months to come. The museum will play host to many local artists over the next several months, located in the Community Gallery, a room on the second floor dedicated to local talent.

Visit the museum and you will see that your hometown and the county of Centre is home to talent on a grand scale. Visit the museum and you will find dedicated men and women who cherish our beloved town and county. I found them to be a special breed.

When you are in the little town of Bellefonte and find yourself walking down Allegheny Street, stop in to see what the Bellefonte Museum has to offer. I can promise you, you will exit the incredible stone structure we call The Linn House with a love of art, a sense of pride, a sense of HOME.

Lady Raiders Avenge Loss With a Shutout Win Kyle Busch Steals Over Bald Eagle Area One at Richmond

Ask an athlete from either Bald Eagle Area or Bellefonte about the last game they played against their rival and chances are good they will be able to recall it with remarkable detail. Sure bigger games may be played but there is something special about the last game against your rival.

Alexandra Stathes had never started on the mound against Bald Eagle Area but she was called on to face the team that had earlier defeated the defending PIAA champions, 4-3, in Milesburg. In her last game against their rival, Stathes used a nice mix of pitches and kept the Lady Eagles (8-2) off balance all afternoon last Wednesday as the Lady Raiders posted an impressive 6-0 win.

Bellefonte (8-4) jumped out to an early lead in the first inning when Jess Gmerek brought in two runs with a bases loaded double.

She would also come around to score in the inning on a long sacrifice fly to centerfield to stake Stathes to more runs than she would need at 3-0.

The Lady Raiders would tack on another run in the fourth inning when Raychel DeArmitt knocked in Devon Etters, who had reached on a double of her own. The final two runs came across in the sixth inning when Etters’ second double of the game plated a run.

Etters would later score on an RBI single.

In their previous victory over the Lady Raiders, Megan Dudish handled the potent Bellefonte offense well. This time around it

was the Lady Raiders that got the best of the right handed hurler. Dudish allowed four runs on five hits while striking out two and walking two in four innings of work. Cassondra Ross pitched the final two innings and gave up two runs on four hits.

It wasn’t the pitching that left Lady Eagles Coach Kayleen Sidisky disappointed at the end of the game. She stated her disappointment stemmed from her team’s undisciplined play. The Lady Eagles struck out a season high ten times in the loss including six of the first eleven hitters that faced Stathes and several swings against both Stathes and later DeArmitt were not quality swings. Coach Sidisky, a Bellefonte graduate, did state that added to her disappointment as cutting down on the strikeouts is something that they have been working on.

On a day when the powerful Bald Eagle Area lineup was held to just three hits, the Lady Eagles did have a chance to break up the shutout in the sixth inning when with two outs, Kelly Chambers launched a drive that in Milesburg may have hit the batting cage in centerfield. Unfortunately for the Lady Eagles and Chambers, O’Leary Field only has a fence in left field. With that, Chambers legged out a triple and was looking to score their first run but a perfect relay from the outfield caught Chambers in a rundown between third and home. She would be tagged out to end the inning.

On Thursday April 28th, Bald Eagle Area seniors Justin Taylor and Taylor Parsons both signed their letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers. Taylor, the star baseball, basketball and football player will be playing baseball for the Vulcans of California of PA (Division II) and Parsons, a fouryear starter for the Lady Eagle softball team, will continue her softball career for the Red Flash of St. Francis (Division I). They both signed their letters of intent in the Bald Eagle Area High School’s multimedia room in front of family, friends, and their coaches.

Taylor, a three-sport athlete throughout his high school career, chose Cal over Slippery Rock, Kutztown, Thiel College, Maryland and Florida Golf Coast University. “I loved the campus when I first got there” said Taylor of Cal. “It felt like the right place for me. It’s not too far away and not too close to home, so that’s a good thing.” Taylor has relatives who live in Western PA, and that also contributed to his decision. Taylor, who plans on majoring in sports management, said he expects to play either third base or shortstop, but will be comfortable playing wherever Coach Mike Conte wants him to play. “I’m just relieved this over now. I can focus on being a better baseball player and not worry about having to travel for basketball and football.” he said. Taylor, who quarterbacked the Bald Eagles this past fall, declined an opportunity to play in the Lezzer Lumber

Class, which will be played June 24th in his own backyard at Memorial Field.

Parsons has been a fixture in the Lady Eagles lineup since her freshman season, and is also relieved to complete the decision making process. “This is a big weight off of my shoulders, that’s for sure.” she said. “I’m ready to finish up my senior year and graduate.”

Parsons chose St. Francis over Baylor, Penn State and Mount Aloysius College. Part of her reasoning for choosing St. Francis’s was because of the emphasis on religion. Parsons is catholic, so it was a perfect fit; they also have her intended major (exercise physiology).

Parsons plans on playing one of the middle infield positions when she steps on campus.

“She’s one of the best second basemen I’ve been around, and I think she is a role model for other girls in the program.” said her coach Kayleen Sidisky.

Kyle Busch is a lightning rod for controversy on the Nascar Sprint Cup Series circuit, and his post race comments Saturday night might lead to more controversy.

Similar to stealing signs in a baseball game, Busch stole some inside information from a fellow driver.

The problem was, it was from a teammate.

In a team meeting with Joe Gibbs Racing, Denny Hamlin shared some tips on how to win at his home track of Richmond International Speedway. Problem was, Busch

was in on the meeting, and used those tips to his advantage, as he raced to his second win on the season. Hamlin used his tips and tricks to his advantage, and ended up finishing second to Busch.

Busch declined to elaborate on what the tips were.

Maybe it had something to do with conserving gas, as he stretched his final tank 107 laps to edge out his teammate. Rounding out the top five were Kasey Kane, David Ragan and Carl Edwards.

Two Nittany Lions Have Name Called in NFL Draft

While baseballs and softball currently fills most athletic fields and thoughts, it will soon be football season again. And even though the status of the NFL plays better on Court TV than it does ESPN right now, most believe that the labor issues at hand will be resolved and the NFL will be back in business.

Meanwhile, the NFL held their annual player draft last weekend in New York City.

After a rousing chorus of boos for Commissioner Roger Goodell, the Carolina Panthers started off the draft with the selection of the Auburn Tigers’ Heisman Award winning quarterback, Cam Newton with the number one overall pick last Thursday night.

Over the course of the next three days, 253 college players saw the dream of being drafted by an NFL team become reality.

Including in those players was Cheta Ozougwu. The talented defensive end from Rice was selected with the final pick of the draft by the Houston Texans to earn the status of “Mr. Irrelevant 2011”.

Penn State had just two players drafted during the three day event with offensive

lineman Stefen Wisniewski being taken in the second round by the Oakland Raiders where he will be coached by another former Nittany Lion, his uncle, Steve Wisniewski.

The elder Wisniewski was a Pro Bowler in the NFL and has a talented rookie to shape and mold.

The other Nittany Lion to receive a call was running back Evan Royster. The Washington Redskins picked him in the sixth round with the 177th overall selection. He will play for Mike Shanahan, a coach known well for his work with running backs using his zone blocking scheme that has allowed for backs to amass some gaudy numbers. Royster has a real chance to see quality time in the Redskins backfield.

With the NFL offseason in flux as the courts try and determine which side is right and which is wrong, the Nittany Lions and other college players who are hoping to be signed as free agents are left playing the same game as the NFL fans…the waiting game.

Let’s just hope that isn’t a long game. The fans at the draft echoed the sentiment of many when they chanted “We want football!”.

The Bellefonte baseball team struggled to hit the ball in a 5-1 loss to Lewistown. Taylor Smith took the hill for the Raiders, who were playing their fourth game of the week.

Smith struck out five Panthers in the loss, and accounted for the only Bellefonte run of the game on a seventh inning solo homerun.

Brandon Quay contributed two hits in the loss.

The Lady Raider softball team finished off the Lady Panthers of Lewistown from an earlier weather shortened game this season, then shut them out in the nightcap of a semi-double header on Friday, winning 14-1 and then taking Game two with a score of 5-0. Hannah Cooper and Raychel DeArmitt combined for the win in Game one. DeArmitt helped her cause at the plate, driving in two runs on the day. Erica DeVinney and Jillian Musser each drove in two runs in the victory as well.

In Game two, Alexandra Stathes struck out ten Lady Panthers to lead Bellefonte to a 5-0 victory.

The Lady Raider softball team dominated Juniata in a doubleheader, winning both games by a score of 10-0. Raychel DeArmitt pitched a shutout in Game one, striking out four Lady Warriors. Chrissy Tressler, Devon Etters,

Hannah Cooper and Jess Gmerek all contributed in the win.

In Game two, Alexandra Stathes took the circle for Bellefonte, and kept the machine rolling. She struck out two in a two-hit shutout.

Jillian Musser paced the Lady Raiders with four hits.

In a double dip with Juniata, the Red Raider baseball team made Juniata starting pitching look like batting practice pitching, winning both games by a combined score of 33-1 over the twin bill. Bellefonte won by scores of 17-0 and 16-1.

In Game one, Matt Watson belted a three-run home run to pace the Raiders.

Brandon Quay also contributed in the slugfest, smashing two RBI doubles. Both would be outshined by Robert Gummo, who tossed a four-inning shutout in a game that was called due to the mercy rule. With the win, Gummo became Bellefonte’s all-time career wins leader, surpassing former Major League pitcher, Eric Milton. Gummo notched his 19th career win by striking out eight and giving up only two hits. He was also 1-for-2 at the plate, driving in a run.

In Game two, Watson hit his second threerun homer on the day, Eric Regel went 2-for-2 with an RBI triple and Quay went 3-for-4, driving in two runs. Doylan Deitrich picked up the win in Game two for Bellefonte.

Bald Eagle Area Roundup

The Eagles baseball team got another great pitching performance from sophomore Dylan Womer last Tuesday afternoon. Womer tossed his second complete game of the season as the Eagles improved to 7-3 with a 2-1 win on the road at Hollidaysburg. Womer allowed just two hits and the lone run scored in the first inning. He also struck out seven Golden Tigers. His brother Kyle Womer provided offensive punch in the low scoring game when he tied the game in the fourth inning with a solo home run. Justin Taylor scored the go-ahead run in the same inning when he scored on a sacrifice fly from Ty Bennett. Taylor had reached on a single.

The Eagles were back on Doc Etters Field on Monday and they treated the home crowd to a little long ball action in their 11-8 win over visiting Lewistown. They jumped out to an early lead with a sixth run first inning. Most of that damage came on a grand slam by Adam Snook. Justin Taylor would get into the act as well with the first of two home runs in the game. The first, a three-run shot, came in the fourth inning and help provide insurance. The second one came in the sixth inning and was of the solo variety. Dylan Womer was back on the mound and picked up the win after pitching 5 1/3 innings. He left with blisters on his pitching hand.

The Lady Eagles improved to 9-3 on the season but needed extra innings to do so. On Monday, they avenged an earlier loss to Lewistown by defeating the Lady Panthers on their own field, 5-3. Taylor Parsons knocked in Kelsey Shaw with a two-out single, the last of her three hits in the game, in the eighth inning. Amber McClure would provide Cassondra Ross a little more breathing room by knocking in another run. Ross would then shut down Lewistown to preserve the win as she improved to 5-1 on the season.

The Penns Valley baseball team got in the win column last week, taking both games in a doubleheader against Juniata, winning 11-5 and 12-5. Sam Snyder led the Rams in the first game, going 2-for-4 and driving in three runs. Ethan Thoms struck out nine Warriors on the way to picking up his first win of the season.

In the second game, Garret Zubler and Nigel Grandy each drove in three runs to spark the Rams. Zubler belted three doubles while Grandy had two extra base hits in the win. Max Bair picked up the win in the nightcap for the Rams.

Not to be outdone by the Rams baseball team, the Lady Rams softball team swept the Lady Warriors of Juniata, winning 7-5 and 12-10. Janelle Welch and Clarissa Keller each had two hits and drove in two runs apiece to pace the Lady Rams in the win.

Emily Weaver picked up the win for Penns Valley in Game one.

In Game two, Keller went 2-for-4, again driving in two runs to lead the Lady Rams.

Maggie Lynch notched the win for Penns Valley.

The Rams left too many ducks on the pond in an 8-4 extra inning loss to Indian Valley. Penns Valley got big days from Sam Snyder and Nigel Grandy, but left ten runners on base. Snyder blasted a home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to push the game to extras, but Indian Valley got hot in the ninth inning, and Penns Valley couldn’t recover.

Raiders Rock Eagles

In Bellefonte’s previous three games, they had scored an average of 12.6 runs per game. In a long awaited first matchup with their rival Bald Eagles last week, they threw the law of averages aside, and plated 17 runs on the Eagles while amassing 18 hits, in a 17-4 victory in the first of a back to back series of games due to weather cancelations.

The Red Raiders got big first and second innings, scoring four runs in the first and six runs in the second. Bellefonte starting pitcher Brandon Quay tossed a complete game, striking out five Eagles, while walking eight and allowing seven hits. Two of his seven allowed hits went to Coleman Hoffman and Tyler Bennett, each of whom hit home runs for an Eagle team that had won their last three games.

For Bellefonte, Matt Watson continued to swing a hot bat, going 5-for-5 with two homeruns (solo and two-run shots) and two RBI singles. Watson drove in seven runs on the day. “I felt comfortable in the batter’s box today and I was seeing the ball really well.” said Watson of his day at the plate.

Quay, Taylor Smith and Dylan Moerschbacher each homered for Bellefonte on the day.

Senior Robert Gummo also went 3-for-5, helping to chase Bald Eagle starting pitcher Mike Cowels after three innings.

Little Lions Roundup

It was a busy week on the diamond for State College last week. It started with the baseball team improving to 4-1 with a 4-0 win over visiting Hollidaysburg. Despite getting only three hits against the Golden Tigers, the Little Lions defeated their Blair County rivals for the second time it just a little over a week. While the Little Lions managed only three hits, it was one more than pitcher Tim Scholly allowed to Hollidaysburg. Scholly tossed his second complete of the year as he struck out four and walked four in the win.

The Lady Little Lions were also in action on Wednesday as they were on the road against Williamsport. Behind a solid outing by pitcher Haley Shaw, the Lady Little Lions posted their first win of the season, 2-1. Both State College runs scored in the fourth inning when Erica Nolan and Ana Ross plated runs with RBI singles. Shaw tossed a five hitter while fanning eight.

The baseball team was in Williamsport a day after the softball team but they didn’t fare as well. In another pitching dominated game, the Little Lions were held to three hits in a 3-2 loss. They had built a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning and held it until the bottom of the sixth with the Millionaires tallied three

runs to take the lead. Mike Finlan (1-1) was tagged with the loss but pitched well. He scattered seven hits and struck out six in six innings. Saige Jenco had two of the Little Lions three hits.

On Saturday, it was the baseball team that put their traveling shoes on as they traveled to Cedar Cliff. The long trip didn’t seem to bother the Little Lions as they rebounded from the loss to Williamsport with a 7-4 win.

Darian Herncane had a key two-run double in the third inning as did Cam Walls in the fifth inning. In that fifth inning, the Little Lions struck for four runs to build a 7-2 lead.

Brandon Auman (1-1) picked up the win after allowing three runs on four hits while striking out three and walking four.

Monday had the softball team back on the field as they played host to Mifflinburg.

Another strong performance on the mound

In the 3-1 win, all three of State College’s runs came in the first inning as Emilee Eden, Ana Ross and Haley Brown drove in runs.

Shaw struck out five and walked one as she improved to 3-7 as well on the season. The Junior Varsity team improved to 7-1 with a 9-4 win.

Eagles Rebound to Split Season Series with Raiders

Playing four games in a week for a high school baseball team can be tough. Playing five games in a week is even tougher. Most teams have at most, a three-man pitching rotation.

Bellefonte’s ace Robert Gummo had already thrown this week, and was not able to throw again until next week. The Red Raiders used three pitchers in a 12-5 loss to their rival Bald Eagle Area Eagles on Thursday, one day after they defeated their arch nemesis’ 17-4 when they used only one pitcher (Brandon Quay).

Bellefonte starter Matt Watson was chased after 1 1/3 innings pitched, and gave way to freshman Dylan Moerschbacher, who gave up only one run in three plus innings of work, before Coach Denny Leahters handed the ball to junior Tyler Sunday. In a game played at Bellefonte’s junior varsity field, with the wind swirling, several routine pop flies turned into base hits for both teams. Bald Eagle sent ace Justin Taylor to the hill on the day he signed to play college baseball with the Vulcans of California of Pennsylvania. He threw 112 pitches and struck out 11 Red Raiders on the day after one week ago, hurling 172 pitches and striking out 16 in a nine inning affair with Philipsburg-Osceola. Coleman Hoffman cooled off Bellefonte’s hot bats with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of work to close the game out. Hoffman went 4-for-4 at the plate on the day, driving in two runs and scoring four. Kyle Womer also contributed in the victory, belting a two-run triple in the sixth inning to seal the win for the Eagles.

For Bellefonte, Watson and Taylor Smith each had two hits on the day. Catcher Eric Regel also cracked a solo homerun in the loss.

Bald Eagle Area Little League Softball Meeting

The Bald Eagle Area Little League Softball will be holding their regular monthly meeting on SUNDAY, MAY 8TH AT 6PM. The meeting will be held at the Bald Eagle Area High School CAFETERIA. Regular monthly meetings are held the second Sunday of each month at the Bald Eagle Area High School.

Bellefonte’s Matt Watson Named Player of the Week

Dix Honda and The Centre County Gazette are proud to announce that Bellefonte baseball player Matt Watson has been named as the Player of the Week for the week ending May 3, 2011 for his performance’s this past week. In Bellefonte’s 17-4 victory over Bald Eagle, Watson went 5-for-5 on the day, with two home runs and two RBI singles.

The next day against the Eagles, Watson had two hits in a loss. In a doubleheader against Juniata, Watson went 2-for-3 on the day, but his two hits were each three-run home runs.

In a five game span, Watson belted four round trippers for Bellefonte. Good luck to Matt and the rest of the Red Raider baseball team for the remainder of the season.

Gummo Surpasses Milton as All-time Wins Leader at Bellefonte

Bellefonte senior pitcher Robert Gummo has been a fixture in the Red Raider pitching rotation since his freshman year in 2008 when he started six games, posting a 4-0 record; not bad for 15 year-old getting his first taste of Varsity baseball. That season, Bellefonte fell to Somerset in the District 6 AAA Championship game. Gummo didn’t have the opportunity to play in that game, but he would get his chance the following year. His sophomore campaign was his best season on the hill to date, posting a 7-2 record with a 2.70 ERA and 67 strikeouts. That season, Gummo helped to lead a Bellefonte attack that knocked off the reigning District 6 champs, bringing home the District 6 AAA title with a 9-4 victory.

Gummo took the mound for Bellefonte that day, earning the victory for the Red Raiders.

He also picked up a win in the PIAA State Playoffs against Moon High School during the Raiders magical run of 2009. His junior year saw a dip in production, posting only a 3-2 record with a 6.41 ERA. His senior year is off to a great start so far and got even better earlier this week.

On Monday, Gummo tossed a shutout against Juniata to notch his 19th career victory. The four inning outing, where he struck out eight and gave up only two hits, gave him one more victory than any other Red Raider pitcher to date. The previous

record holder, former Major League pitcher Eric Milton, won 18 games over a three-year span, whereas Gummo has been pitching at the Varsity level since his freshman season.

“This is definitely the biggest accomplishment of my career, without a doubt.” Gummo said. “It feels pretty good to be able to pass an ex-Major Leaguer. I don’t want to let it get to my head though. I have to keep focused on my game and keep moving forward.” Humility for a teenager who just accomplished such a huge feat is rare. In talking with Gummo, he is wise beyond his years.

Gummo, who plans to continue his baseball career at Western Texas Community College (Division II) next fall, and the Red Raiders are poised to make another run into the District Playoff this season. He sees several comparisons between this year’s team and the 2009 District Championship team.

“We are hitting the ball well this year, our pitching is on and our defense is solid, just like we were in 2009. We just need to keep it going.” he said. This year’s squad is averaging just over ten runs a game while giving up only four runs per game.

Gummo will likely have several more opportunities to add to his wins record this season, with Bellefonte’s regular season tentatively scheduled to wrap up on May 14th with Jersey Shore.

Nittany Knights to Present 48th Annual Show STATE COLLEGE - The Nittany Knights Barbershop Chorus is proud to present their 48th annual show, “Keep The Whole World Singing;” the theme song for the Barbershop Harmony Society. The show will celebrate the role that music has played in their lives.

Joining the Knights will be guest quartet, Cadillac Jack, the 2008 Johnny Appleseed District Quartet Champions from Columbus, OH. As a quartet, Cadillac Jack has more than 50 years experience singing in the Barbershop style to the delight of audiences everywhere.

The Nittany Knights promote the singing of young men and women with its Barbershop Harmony Society’s program, “Youth in Harmony.” And, as a special treat, the Mt. Nittany Middle School Melodic Minors will perform under the direction of Kristen Paschen singing a cappella in three-part harmonies.

The show will feature eight In-House Quartets from both the Nittany Knights and their sister chorus, the Altoona Horseshoe Chorus. Their members along with the Knights will blend for of more than 50 voices singing in four-part harmony.

The show’s intention is “to keep the whole world singing, watch goodwill come a winging, have you smile the while we are singing, and as our voices carry our parts, keep a melody ringing in your heart.”

Little Ladder opens with the slow groove of Courtin’ Disaster with great keyboards from Adams along with biting sax and guitar solos from McMinn and Olsen, respectively.

The album rocks and rolls, rhythms and blues, countries and westerns through 13 total tracks. In fact, there’s even a song called, appropriately enough, Rhythm N Blues that starts with a saxophone growl. Waiting For You gives you the feel that it was written on a beach with a cool ocean breeze blowing in.

Little Ladder is well recorded and features strong performances by all the musicians involved. The songs are well written by Gyekis and crafted by Kimbo and the other musicians. All songs are written by Gyekis except Sweet Dreams which features lyrics by Natalia Pilato and music by Gyekis.

What’s impressive to me is that Gyekis has been a musician since the age of 10, mostly as a drummer. It was only 10 years ago that he started playing guitar a lot more and writing songs. His other recording credits include playing drums on the first Chicken Tractor album, Tarpaper Shack and on their as-yet-unreleased and un-named second album.

He also recorded with the band Berrit Smylin.

The CD Release Party gets started Saturday night at 8 p.m. at Elk Creek Café & Aleworks.

Genghis Gyekis Climbs the “Little Ladder” MILLHEIM – Gary Gyekis seems to be a Renaissance man and a busy one at that. He’s a self-employed woodworker and business owner/manager, including being part of the new Green Drake Gallery and Arts Center in Millheim.

He spends his free time hiking, biking, fly fishing for trout, gardening, reading, and playing with his grandson. He’s the drummer and harmony vocalist in the band Chicken Tractor. And, oh yeah, he just released a CD of original songs playing guitar and singing with his band Genghis Gyekis and his Merry Cons.

His CD, Little Ladder, was released earlier this year and Gyekis and his band will celebrate Saturday night (5/7) at the Elk Creek Café & Aleworks in Millheim with a CD Release Party.

Gyekis recorded Little Ladder at Kimbo’s Studio in Lewisburg. He says that having friends involved in the recording played a bit part in the overall sound, “Kim ‘Kimbo’ Reichely, as well as the rest of my good friends and fellow musicians were extremely helpful and influential in creating the sound of this recording. In particular Anders Olsen, performing on guitar and vocals and Bill Stetz on bass and vocals put in countless hours practicing, recording, refining and mixing the CD. Invaluable contributions came from Steve Mitchell on drums, Doug McMinn on sax and clarinet and Steve Adams on keyboards.”

Gyekis says that his songs are inspired sometimes by personal experiences and emotions and sometimes by the natural world or historical events. He went on to say that sometimes it’s a combination of all these things. “For example, the song Lotta Rain evokes an intense emotional journey as well

Movie Review: Water for Elephants

To me Christoph Waltz was the surprise of the movie. He was terrific as the sadistic August. He played the part on so many levels: ambitious for his circus, jealous of his wife, remorse after particularly cruel actions. I found myself watching his reactions no matter who else was in the scene.

The reason that I found the movie to be a little flat may have been the casting of Robert Pattinson as Jacob.

Ironically, his scenes with Rosie, the elephant, seemed warmer than his scenes with Marlena. I know that he is very popular with the young girls, so maybe I am missing something, but he and Witherspoon did not strike sparks for me and that was important to the

West Side Story 1961 Classic Film

Movies based on a favorite book always scare me. Too often Hollywood seems to miss the author’s point and feels obligated to add sex scenes, whether or not the scenes were in the original book.

Therefore, it was with a slightly closed mind that I allowed myself to be talked into seeing the movie version of Sara Gruen’s Water for Elephants. The result is that I have to share my opinion of this production.

Cristoph Waltz and Reese Witherspoon play August and Marlena, the owner of a 1930’s circus, and his wife who, along with her performing horses, is the star act of the show. Robert Pattinson is Jacob Jankowski the almost veterinarian who hops a freight car and finds that he has joined the circus. If you have read the book you know that the tension builds not only through the love story between Jacob and Marlena, but also through August’s cruel treatment of the animals, as well as his relationship with the people working for him.

Marlena’s feelings for the two men in her life were complex. Reese Witherspoon did an excellent job of showing the strength of being married to a volatile man, the softness of caring for her beloved horses, and the vulnerability of falling in love.

Hal Holbrook as the 90-year-old Jacob telling his story was perfect, as was Rosie, the elephant. The sets, costuming, and cinematography captured the mood of the Depression exceptionally well. I am not sure if there is an Academy Award for elephants, but everything else in this paragraph is worthy of their consideration.

I know that a movie has to condense a book to fit the time constrictions, but I missed the colorful characters that made up the 1930’s circus in the book.

I would love to hear from people who saw the movie, but did not read the book. It is not that I did not enjoy the movie, but I really loved the book.

Join the Innkeeper for a special screening of Winged Migration. This documentary follows several species of migratory birds over a four-year period. These birds travel several hundreds if not thousands of miles toward the equator in the autumn, and make the return journey to their higher-latitude summer homes in the spring, always taking the same route, using the natural compasses of the universe and the stars.

Some of these long and often torturous treks are a matter of survival. Some will not survive. The survivors will continue this journey year after year. Meet at the Nature Inn Multipurpose room. Screening starts at 9 p.m.
