“If you’re looking to remodel, build, or upgrade your heating system, windows, outdoor spaces, your entire house – you name it – it’s all here under one roof,” said Jeff Bolze, president of Pennwood Home & Hearth, a Home Show sponsor. “We’ll show you all the newest technology, style, efficiency.” Central PA’s largest Home Show runs March 9, 10, and 11 at the Bryce Jordan Center, hosted by the Builders Association of Central Pennsylvania, and co-sponsored by Kohl Building Products and Pennwood Home & Hearth. You’ll find every inspiration you could hope for in redecorating, updating, building, additions, or landscapes. You can’t miss Pennwood’s exhibit. They’re outside Gate B under the big 30x30 tent, where they’ll be showing off charcoal grills, a pizza oven, contemporary fireplaces, grill island with a bar, and lots more. If you’re lucky, they might be cooking up tasty treats. There are more than 130 exhibitors of every type – home builders, window companies, flooring experts, specialists in patios, kitchens, baths, fireplaces, and roofs. Learn about green building, energysaving ideas, the latest in spa tubs, and home-theatre systems. You’ll even find real estate agents to sell you land – or a new dream home. You can find out about financing, home equity loans, and mortgages. It’s not just the exhibitors who will inspire you. Choose from 11 free seminars throughout the show, ranging from geothermal heating to floor coverings, green remodeling to managing your credit score.

2012 Home Show: March 9, 10 & 11
continued from previous page
Check out the seminar schedule (on page 17) so you can visit when the topics that interest you are presented. The Seminar Series is presented this year by 84 Lumber. Bring the kids! Register online for the Children’s Building Contest, sponsored by SPE Federal Credit Union (visit www.centralpabuilders.com). The 9- to 12-year-old contest is already full, but spaces may still be available for kids ages 4 to 6 (competing with Lincoln Logs) and kids ages 7 & 8 (competing with Legos). You’ll enjoy seeing what the children create on Saturday and Sunday. Outside the main entrance, you’ll find a new way that you can help Habitat for Humanity, a charity that builds and remodels homes for low-income families. “Let’s Build This Together” is a unique opportunity which allows you to hand-choose framing lumber for the next house they build – you can pay to sponsor it and even sign it, dedicate it, or leave a message to the homeowner. From a 2x4 to a whole room, there are opportunities everyone can afford. “I really admire the Association’s tradition of getting involved with Habitat for Humanity,” said Glenn Davis, branch manager of Kohl Building Products, a Home Show sponsor. “Everyone works together to make housing affordable for worthy families.” “Manufacturers are constantly updating. Even if you came to the Show a few years ago, there
are plenty of new products for homeowners to discover,” said Davis. Kohl Building Products will offer a kitchen and bath display. Don’t forget to fill out the back of your admission ticket. It’s your entry for door prizes! Exhibitor gifts worth at least $50 will be given away periodically through the show. A $1,000 Wolf Furniture gift certificate will be drawn at 7 p.m. Saturday, and the grand prize of a 42-inch Sony HD TV, donated by ABC 23, Fox 8, and ThisTV will be drawn at the end of the show. Also, be sure to “Check In” on Facebook at “Central PA Home Show” and you’ll be given a second chance to win the grand prize!!! You’ll also see student builders at the show as well. The building trades and horticulture students at CPI are creating a beautifully landscaped entrance to the show. Read about their great training programs in the back of this issue. The Building Construction Program from State High is having an educational booth this year, with four interactive games for kids and adults, prizes, and a “student focused booth.” There’s also an important element to the Home Show that can’t been seen with your eyes – it’s peace of mind. Members of the Builders Association meet higher standards, and are committed to customer service. “With Association members, you know there is insurance, bonding…that they’ll be around next year to do repairs,” said Don Gilmore of Gilmore Construction, Home Show committee chairperson. th “We’re certified builders with 28 Annual Central PA Home Show liability insurance and business Friday, March 9 Noon to 8 p.m. responsibility – not guys just Saturday, March 10 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. passing through town or doing Sunday, March 11 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. jobs on the side.” Bryce Jordan Center PSU, University Park Campus Ted Liston of Crescent Admission Adult One-Day $7 Bath & Kitchen agreed, “Being a member earns us credibility. Adult Weekend Pass $12 Consumers know we’re good Children 12 and Under Admitted Free people, good companies. You Free Parking Courtesy of the can get a lot of ideas in one stop,” Builders Association of Central PA said Liston. “If you’re thinking More than 130 exhibitors along with free seminars, about remodeling now or in the future, the Home Show is the daily door prizes and Children’s Building Contest place to go.”

BACP HOME SHOW 2012
The BACP plays an active role in improving the community, by working with the local Habitat for Humanity and the Centre County Affordable Housing Coalition.
MARCH 9–11, 2012
Building Pride in Our Communities
Committed to Good Causes The Builders Association of Central PA is Centre County’s foremost residential building trade organization. Since its inception in 1957, the BACP has championed the building industry by providing education and networking opportunities and by working to influence state and local government to ensure the continuation of quality construction in Centre County. In addition, the BACP works to raise consumer awareness about issues that affect their rights. The BACP plays an active role in improving the community, by working with the local Habitat for Humanity and the Centre County Affordable Housing Coalition. • The Builders Association members participated in the Clearwater Conservancy Watershed Clean Up day in April. • The 2011 Bricks and Sticks Golf Classic hosted more than 170 golfers and raised more than $40,000 to benefit the Association and Habitat for Humanity. • In October, the Builders Association held its 17th annual raffle, which benefits the Pennsylvania Committee for Affordable Housing and allows the Builders Association to sponsor scholarships for secondary trade education. • New this year, Habitat for Humanity is kicking off its “Let’s Build This Together” project at the Home Show. Look for them outside at Gate B. Home Show visitors can sponsor framing materials and other supplies that will be used to build a Habitat home. (More info on page 35) Now in its 55th year of serving central Pennsylvania homeowners, the Builders Association comprises more than 240 member companies – builders, remodelers, landscapers, bankers, retailers, lawyers, suppliers, real estate agents, and many more dedicated professionals – all committed to earning your trust when you build, buy, finance, renovate, landscape, or furnish your home. There is so much that the Builders Association can do for you! Look for the “Homeowners’ Guide to Builders, Remodelers and Services” directory – available free at the Home Show! The Central Pennsylvania Home Show, now in its 28th year, is the Builders Association’s largest event. With their efforts alone, the small Builders Association staff could never have put together the largest Home Show in our region. As with most not-for-profit organizations, the Builders Association of Central PA relies on the support of its members and the efforts of its volunteers.

MARCH 9–11, 2012
Each year it’s amazing that the largest Home Show in Central PA is put together by just a handful of committee members. They are experts at it – most committee members return to meet year after year, meeting beginning in August and even volunteer at 6 a.m. to help exhibitors unload the day before the Show. Longtime Association member and exhibitor, Don Gilmore, has been chairman for as long as the show has been at the BJC. “Our goal is to help our exhibitors advance their businesses every single year,” Don said. “The exposure you get by being involved in the Home Show is unlike anything else around! We are always excited to hear the success stories after the Show.” Don and his committee have everything under control, but they do get a lot of help come Show time! In addition to the committee, the Builders Association puts approximately 30 volunteers to work at various tasks through the weekend – ticket selling, greeting, manning the information booth, directing visitors throughout the BJC, and assisting with exhibitor move-in and move-out. The Builders Association of Central PA staffers, Abbie Jensen, Executive Officer, and Kristine Lang McDonald, Director of Membership, play key roles. These dedicated women do a lot of coordinating, but count on volunteers to pull off the Show. Abbie explained, “In the office, we worry about day-to-day things but we rely on the Committee members for guidance. They are the experts in the housing industry and we could never hold the Home Show without their input.” It seems that the feeling is mutual – Don praised the efforts of the staff members as well. “They work really hard,” Don said. “Abbie and Kristine do a really good job dealing with it – between the Committee and all the volunteers and the staff, there is a lot of work that goes into making the Show a success.” The 2012 Home Show Committee includes these Association members: • Chairman, Don Gilmore, Gilmore Construction • Jeff Bolze, Pennwood Home and Hearth • Ann Guss, Kish Bank • CJ Henry, Green Horizon Landscape • Linda Hershey, Proforma LLH Promos • Andy Orr, Cisney and O’Donnell www.centralpabuilders.com

It’s time for the little ones to show off their building skills. We’re looking for 120 young builders to enter the 8th Annual Children’s Building Contest, sponsored by SPE Federal Credit Union. Children ages 4 through 12 build their dream homes using Lincoln Logs or Legos. Michael Scott, Small Business Lender at SPE, was a judge at the contest last year. He loved it, and made the commitment to be a sponsor this year. “The kids take it so seriously,” he said. “They’re so proud. After the time is up, they’ll come up to you and ask you to look at their project, ask what you think. Last year, two sisters came in first and second in one of the age groups. It’s a lot of fun.” Prizes and trophies will be awarded in each age group and every contestant will receive a free Future Home Builder t-shirt and a goodie bag filled with surprises. Thanks to the members of the Builders Association of Central PA and SPE Federal Credit Union, the contest is free to all participants. This year, each contestant is asked to bring at least one canned good to the Show. The donated cans will be used to make a cool can-struction structure at the Home Show and will then be donated to the State College Food Bank. The Children’s Building Contest will be held along the Concourse so folks can watch the construction and judging as they tour the Show. Builders Association Executive Officer, Abbie Jensen, loves the contest and said, “The kids get to walk around the Show and see great exhibits – huge landscapes, actual rooms, cool machines. Then, they participate in the contest and suddenly a Lego man’s head becomes a propane tank within an outdoor fire pit – a kid really built that! We are always blown away by their creativity!” Though it’s free, pre-registration is required and the 9 to 12 year old contest is already full! The contest slots in the other categories are going fast. Log on to the Builders Association web site at www. centralpabuilders.com and fill out an electronic reservation form or call (814) 231-8813 if you don’t have internet access. Registered contestants will be admitted free to the Home Show, along with a complimentary ticket for the one parent or guardian who accompanies the child. Additional family members and friends are certainly welcome to watch the competition but must first purchase a $7 admission ticket to the Home Show at Bryce Jordan Center Gate B. Home Show Tip:
Attend a Free Seminar! You can learn a great deal in a small amount of time when you attend any of the Home Show seminars. These free seminars are a bonus, adding more value to your Home Show ticket! “The seminars are a great bargain – nothing better than free. You get so much knowledge without cost or obligation,” said Nick Lingenfelter, VP and market manager for First National Bank. The Seminar Series, sponsored by 84 Lumber and presented by local industry professionals, is a very popular part of the Home Show. Last year, many Home Show visitors took advantage of the chance to absorb expert advice. “The amount of knowledge presented throughout the weekend is staggering,” said Builders Association Executive Officer Abbie Jensen. “You may be able to do some Googling and learn the basics about geothermal or solar or your credit score, but you can’t get the type of expert advice you receive during a Home Show seminar. Because of 84 Lumber’s support, we are able to provide top-notch information all weekend long!” See the schedule on the next page and plan your visits so you can attend the ones that most interest you. photos by Reidar Jensen

BACP HOME SHOW 2012
The Home Show is The Place to Be Exhibitors Agree
“It’s really worthwhile. We meet a lot of people and get some good jobs from it,” said Mike Fedor of Tressler & Fedor. This local excavating company has been a Home Show exhibitor for going on 20 years, and in business for 28. They also offer mulch, decorative stones, and storage units. They’ve taken up the challenge of creating outstanding exhibits in years past, winning Best Subcontractor in 2002 and Best of Show in 2005. Crescent Bath & Kitchen is fairly new to the Home Show, but has been a long-time member of the Builders Association of Central PA. “It’s a lot of work, but it pays off,” said Ted Liston. “It’s definitely worth the effort.” And effort, it is! Crescent hauls in fixtures for the show, Kohler sinks, shower enclosures, and shower-door units. “We like to give visitors ideas for their remodeling.” Pennwood Home and Hearth has participated in the Show for many years and is a main sponsor of the event. “We work hard to improve the Home Show every year,” said Jeff Bolze of Pennwood. “Getting involved as a sponsor was a no-brainer for us – this event attracts a great crowd every year!” Look for Pennwood’s booth right outside of the main Home Show entrance at Gate B! Lynne Heritage of Heritage Innovations has displayed her window-covering and closet solutions since the show began. She’s been in business since March of 1986 and immediately understood the need to get the most value for her marketing dollars. “They can see my products and get to know me and my staff,” Lynne said. “I’ve been at the Home Show since it started in the mall.” When the show moved to the BJC, Heritage Innovations started out on the arena floor with a double back-to-back booth so it would face both aisles. Later on, Lynne got first dibs on a space at the end of a row. The last two years, she moved her booth to the concourse. “It’s where the windows are!” she said delightedly, knowing she could show her window-coverings in action. Her booth won Best Concourse Display in 2010. Don Gilmore, longtime Home Show committee chair, has also been here since the beginning. His MARCH 9–11, 2012
booth for Gilmore Construction is more of a real-life display with a roof, deck, and “back yard” showcasing live landscaping by Scott’s Landscaping, another long-time member and exhibitor. He likes the way the landscapers, like Scott’s and Green Horizons and others bring live plants to the Home Show. “It gives visitors that springtime feel – a hope that spring is soon to come.” Nick Lingenfelter, VP and market manager for 19 FNB branches, has been a fan and the bank’s liaison at the Home Show for decades. “As an Association member, we network with contractors. As a Home Show exhibitor, we see our customers and provide lots of information about mortgages and home equity loans,” Nick said. “It’s a great deal for visitors. With so many vendors under one roof, if you need an addition, for example, you’ll find vendors to help you every step of the way.” “Being an Association member lends us credibility. There’s a process to ensure that we’re good people – good companies that will be here when you need us,” Ted Liston from Crescent Bath and Kitchen said. “For visitors, it’s great. You can get a lot of ideas. It’s a one-stop shop.” Crescent Bath & Kitchen will bring samples from their showroom to give you bath and kitchen ideas.
Heritage Innovations shows their attractive, energy-saving windowcoverings at their booth on the concourse.

The Builders Association of Central PA supports the student chapter every year and is proud of its accomplishments!
PSU Association Chapter Places Well in Competition
The Penn State Chapter of the National Association of Home Builders competed in the student chapter’s Residential Construction Management Competition – this year judging took place February 8 and 9 during the International Builders Show. The students were proud to place 13th out of the 36 teams this year. The competition gave the students an opportunity to apply learned skills to a construction company by completing a management-project proposal. Proposals were submitted to a group of construction company executives who acted as judges. During the show, the students defended their proposals in front of the judges and an audience. The Penn State Team named its theoretical company “Nittany Homes.” The students’ proposal included innovative technical ideas as well as extensive use of social media. They included architectural models of their seven-unit townhome development, “Wyndam Springs,” and their model home – striving to be the “most up-todate builder” in the competition. This project will start with land development and then proceed to construction of one model home and construction of one seven-unit townhome complex. Our land development and home building business is sure to bring this project to a completion that allows home buyers to enjoy their purchases. Our company has programs that greatly differ from the competition, one of which is our Innovative Management Program (IMP). This program is unique because it implements the use of the Apple iPad and other relating technologies to make our projects more efficient and effective. The Innovative Management Program not only considers cost and MARCH 9–11, 2012
schedule but also considers safety, quality control and value engineering. The safety program within the IMP is called the Make Safe. The Make Safe is our way to ensure job site safety. Quality control is of utmost importance during a large project such as this and our company takes this to a whole new level. Value engineering allows our clients to instill trust into “Nittany Homes” because it shows that our staff’s mindset is ready to ensure the client receives the most “bang for their buck.” Please read the project management section to get a more in-depth understanding of how we differ from other companies in the industry. “Nittany Homes” stands behind our IMP and believes that this program will satisfy all clients to the highest degree. Our sales team has begun the process of branding the “Wyndam Springs” townhome project with “The Good Life”. This branding will be recognized by many individuals when viewing it in brochures, signs and any marketing scheme set in place. With our high quality homes, playground and walking trails, the buyers can’t go wrong.

BACP HOME SHOW 2012
Let’s Build This Together Sponsor One Board at a Time
“
“Let’s Build This Together” is a new program to fund a Habitat for Humanity of Greater Centre County home. Through this unique initiative, everyone in the community can get involved with Habitat’s mission. For a donation as little as $2, you can sponsor a 2x4 wall stud that will go into a new Habitat home. Look for the Habitat for Humanity booth near the entrance of the Home Show. In addition to framing studs, you could sponsor an inside wall for $50, an exterior wall for $75, or a whole room for $250! Along with your Home Show sponsorship comes the opportunity to sign the boards, write a prayer or words of encouragement on them, or even dedicate a piece to a loved one. Your special message will become a lasting part of the home. These studs will be used to frame the interior and exterior walls of the next home built by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Centre County! “We wanted a community-based initiative,” said Frank Savino, Abbie Jensen, Executive Officer of the Habitat volunteer and BACP member, “something everyone can Builders Association contribute to. Pass up that second cup of coffee and sponsor a 2x4.” Frank remembers the date he started volunteering for Habitat – September 15, 2001. “I started building as a volunteer right after 9/11. It was the act of creating something good that comforted me. Through this partnership with the Builders Association, everyone in the community can get involved in that effort.” “We’re very pleased to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Centre County (HFHGCC) is one partner with Habitat and debut of 1,500 independent affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International this program at the Home (HFHI), governed by its own local board of directors with a staff of six Show,” said Abbie Jensen, employees. You Could Win a 46-inch HD TV! And Other Fabulous Prizes The stub on your Home Show ticket is your entry form for the door prizes and the Grand Prize, a 46-inch Sony high-definition television provided by sponsors ABC 23, Fox 8, and ThisTV. Just fill out the back of your admission ticket (a brief survey to help us serve you better!) and drop the stub off at the Builders Association booth inside the Home Show entrance, Gate B. Andy Sumereau of ABC 23/Fox said that they’ve provided on-air features and the grand prize for at least four years now, and, “It’s a great partnership.” Door prizes are donated by local businesses and Home Show exhibitors. Most are worth $50 or more. However, Wolf Furniture Company went all out this year and donated a $1,000 gift certificate! “We’re very excited to be part of the Home Show this year,” said Michael Kasun, general manager of the State College showroom. “We’ve been serving central Pennsylvania for 110 years. One of the big things Wolfe is famous for is extraordinary customer service – free designer service, free child care, and a wide selection of beautiful quality furniture.” You must be present to win one of the door prizes which will be pulled throughout the weekend – including the $1,000 Wolf certificate (which will be pulled Saturday evening at 7 p.m.), but you need not be present to win the Grand Prize provided
by ABC 23, Fox 8, and ThisTV. The winner of the 46-inch HD TV will be e-mailed following the end of the Home Show. Door prizes are generously donated by exhibitors. Winners will be drawn periodically throughout the weekend, and include: • $1,000 gift card to Wolf Furniture • $100 cash courtesy of Ameriserv Bank • 5 x 7 area rug from Clinefelter’s Flooring • Granite cutting board from Kohlhepp Custom Counter Tops • $50 Lowe’s gift card from First National Bank • Kimball & Young vanity mirror from Crescent Baths & Kitchens
