21st people’s choice festival of pennsylvania arts & craf ts
truly the “family’s choice” By Sandie Corbin Biddle When the People’s Choice Festival was named 20 years ago, there was a hope that this family-friendly circle of affordable art, homey food, and local entertainment would end up being a tradition for local families and guests. That’s exactly what happened. First, the location. It’s in a huge grassy museumgrounds, so even with tens of thousands of visitors, it doesn’t feel like a crowd. Then the family aspect. Every day is children’s day at People’s Choice. There are activities, entertainment, exhibits, and animals in the children’s area in the center of the artisan circle – every day and every hour of the festival. Highlights for the kids include the petting 4
zoo and pony rides, Hands-on Science Museum, and Saturday’s appearance of a number of famous mascots, like The Pirate Parrot, Smokey Bear, Ike the Spike, local radio station mascots, and more. Bring your camera! With more than 180 artists, People’s Choice has tripled its booths since 1992. The food vendors are clustered on the south side of the grounds, with huge tents for eating and watching the free live entertainment. In fact, much at this four-day festival is free. The entertainment, many of the children’s activities, and as much artisan browsing as you can handle, including

demonstrations of artists in action. Every artist, every live act, and every food vendor has roots in Pennsylvania, representing all that’s creative in the Keystone State. There are a few new attractions this year. Everyone will want to come to the children’s area to see the world-famous Chris Clark and his bicycle stunt show Thursday and Friday. You’ll also see the roller girls of the State College Area Roller Derby, in uniform, with information about the area’s newest action sport. This is the place to start – and maybe end – your Christmas shopping. A lot of visitors do just that. You’ll be supporting Pennsylvania artists and giving handmade gifts that will be treasured. Stunning photographs, paintings, ceramic, jewelry, woodwork, leather work, metal sculpture, fabric gifts, pens, furniture, and handmade artwork of all kinds will tempt you to complete the circle and see every one of them. Some of the more than 30 entertaining acts are new, like The Nittany Highland Pipe Band, My Hero Zero, Bet Williams and Bookends, and Cone of Silence. Many are old favorites like Deacons of Dixieland, Andy Tolins Review, Chiz Rider, The Little German Band, and JR Mangan. You’ll hear jazz and folk, Dixieland and big band, country and rock, and see cloggers, belly dancers, and a magic act! Thanks to Snappy’s Convenience Stores for sponsoring this free, non-stop entertainment. Like last year, there will be headlining bands with two sets every evening in the South Stage tent (nearest the food vendors). This year it’s My Hero Zero at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, Jackie Brown and the Gill Street Band with two sets Friday, the new
Maria as “Reba” show Saturday, and finally the return of Elvis impersonator, Brad Crum, Sunday at 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. to close the festival. The festival is known for its food. Each member of your group can get their favorites and reunite at the dining tents for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and refreshing snacks. Oldtime favorites like a hot sausage sandwich, fries, and a sundae. You’ll love that smoked roast beef and Prospector’s ribs. New this year are Mexican favorites like tamales and tacos, and other international favorites like haluski, gyros, Hawaiian shave ice, and sweet and savory crepes. There are three wine vendors this year, including a wine slush vendor with sub-zero sangria and glacial grape. Refresh yourself with strawberry smoothies, sweet tea, and Polish water ice. You can take home flavors of Pennsylvania. Visit the specialty food tent where you can taste and buy local sweet and savory foods like jam, maple candy, dip mixes, hot pepper jelly, fruit shrubs, salsa, mustard, and chutneys. There are handmade pastas and artisan raw-milk cheeses, too. The media sponsors have a bunch of live broadcasts, balloons, and prizes for you. Make sure to say “hi” to your favorite radio and TV personalities at the media tent and sign up to win Amusement Park tickets to the best parks in Pennsylvania, a beautiful gas grill from Ace Hardware of State College, and patio furniture from Tubbies of State College. Magnum Broadcasting’s radio stations – 105.9 QWiK ROCK – Lion Country’s Rock Station; 970 AM WBLF; Y106.9; and 1260 AM WPHB, FM Talk 103.7 – and WJAC TV 6 are the broadcast media sponsors. We invite everyone to the 21st People’s Choice Festival for a fun and wholesome experience.”
white swan illuminations By Sandie Corbin Biddle Gina at White Swan Illuminations creates fine art, ceramics, and jewelry, inspired by history, nature, literature, and mythology. She works from historic pottery, metalwork, woodwork, ivory carvings, and archeological fragments to make new pieces of art. Many pieces combine different cultures and time periods. Each piece is documented to tell what her influences for the work were. Most pieces are one of a kind. “It is interesting for me to see how much copying and trading was going on historically. Following the migration of potters across the Middle East and Europe and seeing how
different cultures learned from their knowledge and work but added their own flavor inspires me,” the artist said She finds that the same subject matter appears in many different cultures, allowing her to take one subject and highlight the ways in which it may have been repeated in different time periods and lands.
Located on Curtin Road

entertaining the kids at people’s choice is child’s play! By Sandie Corbin Biddle The People’s Choice Festival is also the families’ choice. That’s because of the grassy wide open spaces in the center of the Boalburg museum grounds – surrounded by the circle of artists, food vendors, and entertainment tents. That inner circle becomes a lively playground with a number of activities and amusements for the children to enjoy every day. New this year is a spectacular stunt bike show sure to entertain children and adults alike. The world-famous Chris Clark Bicycle Stunt Show features stunt biker Chris Clark flying around his custom obstacle course complete with ramps and soundtrack. There will be two 20-minute shows Thursday and two more Friday, with autograph sessions afterward. The family will want to check out the members of SCAR Roller Derby team, who will appear in uniform at the media tent and children’s area during the festival. They’re giving away free tickets to their intra-league exhibition July 14 in State College. One of the most popular children’s activities is the Hands-on Science Museum, featuring amusing and educational experiments and demonstrations. This activity is available all four days during fair hours, presented by the Dominion Science Center, Quaint Corner Children’s Museum, and Penn State Altoona’s Mobile Science Lab. Ashburn’s Animals on a Mission presents a petting zoo for the kids to enjoy, plus pony rides for a small fee. What kid doesn’t want a pony ride! Saturday is Kids’ Character Day, with a bunch of photo-ops with their favorite mascots. These fuzzy celebrities will show up at different times during the day, 20
including Smokey Bear, The Pirate Parrot, Ike the Spike, DelGrosso’s Buddy Bear, The Merf Dog, Nook Monster, QWiKie and Rock; 3WZ’s Zippy the Zebra, and a few other surprise appearances. As in years past, the State College High Thespians are offering face-painting. It’s free, but donations are appreciated to help with expenses for the troupe’s upcoming shows and expenses. What’s old is new again. Tie dying is back with the Try Dye bunch giving kids a chance to tie-die their own masterpiece T-shirt. There is a fee to cover the T-shirt purchase. The Young Artisans will be showing off their creativity from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday through Saturday in the children’s area. On Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., kids can work off some energy in the Tumblebus. On Saturday, learn about greyhounds and the local greyhound rescue center. And everyone will like the Little Smilin’ Choo Choo, that for a small fee, will take you for a ride around the circle perimeter all during the festival. Of course, the whole family will enjoy many of the entertainers, including The Magical Illusions of Kyle and Kelli at 1 p.m. Saturday, The Happy Valley Cloggers at 4 p.m. Thursday, and Jerry Haines at 11:30 a.m. Thursday. Picky eaters? No problem! There is a tasty variety of fair foods from a number of favorite vendors, from hot dogs to crabcake sandwiches, gyros to pierogies, ribs to roast beef, milkshakes to fried Oreos. Each one of you can pick a favorite and join up at the food tent for your family feast. Make sure to bring mom, dad, the kids, cousins, grandparents – anyone and everyone. You’ll all find something to love about the People’s Choice festival.

retired athletes, full of love Misconceptions of an Historic Dog By Toni Duchi
Do you know which dog is called the 40-mile-an-hour couch-potato? It’s the same dog that is one of the oldest breeds in the world and the most bred. But interestingly, most people have never even seen one up close. It’s the GREYHOUND – a sleek and slim example of poetry in motion. If you have never seen one run, you have missed a beautiful sight. If you look into the soft brown eyes of a retired racer, your heart will melt. Greyhounds have been used for hunting and racing around the world for more than 100 years, although in recent years, many tracks have closed. Today, only seven states allow dog racing; however, thousands of these dogs are still born each year. A greyhound is retired if they don’t run fast enough, if they get injured, or if they get too old to win. That’s where Nittany Greyhounds comes in. Each year, dozens of greyhounds are shipped from Florida to Pennsylvania for re-homing. Nittany Greyhounds has been in existence since 1997, and since then, we have placed more than 2,000 greys in loving homes. There are many misconceptions about greys. Some think that they need lots of room to run. No way. They take retirement seriously and are perfectly content to just be with you. Others think that greyhounds are hyperactive. Again, retirement suits them and they will sleep, rest, or just hang out for about 23 hours a day. Some are more active than others, of course, but in general, they are content to just be dutiful companions. If you have a fenced yard, that will be more than

enough space for them to get out any excess energy. Greyhounds are not mistreated at the track either. They are cared for like the athletes they are. When they are finished racing, they are retired into the arms of adoption groups all over the country, to spend the rest of their lives just being calm. At one time, thousands of these dogs were euthanized or “rented” to laboratories, but now, more are being released to groups like ours. If you are interested in seeing greyhounds up close, come see us at Peoples Choice Festival on Saturday. If you can’t make it when we are here, visit our website at www. nittanygreys.org for more information about how to adopt one of these magnificent animals. Nittany Greyhounds also has a kennel near Stormstown, and visits are encouraged! Call us at 814-933-6981.

the girls of pure cane sugar By Sandie Corbin Biddle Since 2006, the sultry voices, soulful harmonies, and powerful lyrics of “the girls” of Pure Cane Sugar, Kate Twoey, Molly Countermine, and Natalie Race, have created a blend of masterful melodies and haunting harmonies that inspire sweet dreams. With accompanying artists Jason “Junior” Tutwiler on slide guitar and Daryl Branford on drums, their original, artful arrangements are captured on a backdrop of textured synergy and rhythm. scars roller derby team By Sandie Corbin Biddle For the first time at People’s Choice, meet members of State College’s own roller derby team at the media tent! Plus they’ll appear at the children’s area to introduce the sport to youngsters. State College Area Roller Derby is a skater owned and operated women’s flat-track derby league. The team started with a handful of women who had discovered each other through social networking sites. They started hitting the local open skates together. Their goal? Roller Derby. State College Area Roller Derby held its first practice October 20, 2010. Open recruitment continued until February 1, 2011, and girls continued to show up until the very last day! SCAR decided to hold its first exhibition scrimmage February 13, 2011, and debuted to an audience of 700 fans! The roller derby roar was deafening in State College. Heather Hall, league member and PR director, has been skating with them since late 2010. She reports that most of the women are

in their 30s and 40s and that any woman 18+ can join them. “It’s the camaraderie of the group,” she said, when asked what she liked about the team. “A bunch of ladies – professionals, lots of teachers – who get together with a common goal.” Today, the nearly 40 skaters and officials that comprise SCAR Derby are very excited about embarking on their second full season with both inter- and intra-league bouts. The league continues to grow, to add new fans and friends, and to grow in its relationship with Women’s Flat Track Derby. They invite everyone to their free intraleague bout July 14 when they break in to two teams, the Pennsyltucky Punishers and Mount Nittany Mayhem. The bout will be held at the outdoor rink at the State College YMCA, or in case of rain, at the Penn State rink.

bet williams and bookends:
a musical homecoming By Sandie Corbin Biddle Bet, then known as Beth, attended PSU and started singing with a group called Bookends in local coffeehouses, bars, and on campus. Members were Bet Williams - voice and guitar; Susie Dore Kocher - voice (and a mean tambourine); and Chris Mincer - voice and guitar. They played plenty of Simon and Garfunkle, from which they got their name, plus a lot of covers by great songwriters like Rickie Lee Jones, Bob Dylan, Mamas and Pappas, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, and more. The band members, went their separate ways in 1988. The old Bookends had developed a big following, so they’re really excited about coming back and performing together again. This Bookends reunion is only the second one in about 20 years. After disbanding, Susie moved south to run a horse farm with her husband and Chris went on to study classical guitar and Alexander technique. Bet focused on her solo career writing songs, making CDs, and touring around America. “There was always music in our house when I was growing up. My mother was a piano teacher and my father directed musicals. They both love classical music and played it practically every evening in our home,” Bet reminisced. “We had family reunions in Altoona that were ridiculous – everybody had to play something! I remember doing duets with my sister. We’d sing songs

like Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head with her playing piano and me on drums (O.k. well, truth be told it was a large trashcan and a small pan) but we had a great time. My first concert was a talent show with my sister. We won $11 each.” She continued, “I was about 11 and I believed people could change the world with their music. With their soul. With their spirit. Sounds corny maybe but I believed! I suppose then I knew I would make music my work. My mother brought home a guitar soon after (I was terrible at piano) and I learned three chords the first day I got it. I figured that was enough to start writing songs. Bet’s come a long way since those first days in the acoustic Bookends, but has never forgotten her roots. She’s been playing music all over the country and the world, writing songs and “trying to figure out life.” Singer/songwriter Bet Williams is a fearless vocalist and performer. Her four-octave-range voice has mesmerized audiences across America and Europe astounding them with what SING OUT! magazine calls “the sheer beauty of her instrument and the passion with which she sings.” With influences that range from Appalachian folk and acoustic blues to Armenian Spiritual music, Qawwali devotional songs and Tuvan throat singing, Williams uses her voice in unusual ways to bring keen observations of life’s poignant moments alive in her unique songs. For the past three years she’s been touring mostly in Europe with

world? “Oh yeah,” she said, “perhaps. Little by little. Music can cross so many borders. It can blast the heart open. It can make you think, feel, realize, imagine. Plus... it’s fun. It’s going to be a great time at the PC fest! Can’t wait.” We can’t either, Bet. Glad you’re coming home and performing for us.

I have some brand new songs I’ll be playing and also some my solo fans might remember like The Barbecue Song about my neighborhood and the humorous but terribly incorrect, Killed My Man. I might even try a brand new song about my great great great great (not sure how many greats) grandfather, John Harris – the trader on the Susquehanna River and founder of Harrisburg.” After Bet’s solo performance at 1 p.m. Saturday, she joins Bookends at 2:30 p.m. playing a lot of the classic old songs as well as some new originals. the bell helmet / chris clark bicycle stunt show Chris Clark has competed around the world as a bicycle stunt rider. Complete with ramps, props, obstacles, and sound effects, this exciting show will delight children and folks of all ages at the People’s Choice Festival. Each 20-minute show is a breathtaking display of balance and agility as Chris takes his bike around the course with precision timing and wild moves. Each show is followed by an autograph session. He’ll perform two shows each on Thursday and Friday in the children’s area. Times will be announced at the festival. Chris started his bicycling experiences at age 12 entering a cross-country race in his home state, New Jersey. He decided endurance racing wasn’t for him and looked to mountain bike stunt riders as his new heroes. He trained for a year or so before entering his first mountain bike stunt competition – and won. His career took off with a professional exhibition in Las Vegas when he was 14 and became the youngest professional rider in the National Cycling Association at age 15. He’s an inspiration to all youngsters to reach for their
dreams, and continues to teach, inspire, and mentor new riders in his adult career.

a handful of organizers A Massive Volunteer Effort for a Huge Successful Festival It’s hard to believe that just six committee members can generate the music, food, artists, marketing, and children’s activities that make up the 21st Annual Peoples Choice Festival. These folks have been with the festival for decades, a few since the very beginning, so every year they can learn and grow from experiences in the past. Besides these hard-working committee members, there are dozens of volunteers to man info booths, drive shuttle carts, relay messages, set up and tear down, and so much more. If you are interested in helping out one or more days of the festival, please
