The festival was the brainchild of George and Nancy Marion. As the State College festival grew and started accepting the work of artists nationally, the Marions wanted to establish a show where local artists could showcase their work.

She Paints Animals’ Souls Wildlife portraits Pennsylvania wildlife artist Laura Mark-Finberg’s paintings have been described as “windows into the soul” of the animals she paints. During a career of more than 20 years Laura has explored a vast array of subjects in her quest to help the viewer understand a little more about the animals she paints. Laura is meticulous in her research and attention to detail and demonstrates a flawless search for truth in each painting. Working primarily in acrylic, Laura’s technique is to build up layers of paint to create the detail, depth and reality of her paintings. According to Laura, “Unlike oil paints, acrylics are difficult to blend as they dry so fast; consequently, I use a lot of transparent washes or glazes and build up layers of paint.” Eyes are her favorite part. “Sometimes I’ll do the eyes first. If I’ve created life in the eyes the rest of the painting seems to paint itself. At other times I’ll wait to the end, almost as if there’s a reward for completing a piece. My favorite subjects are predators. Unlike some animals there is such awareness in the eyes.” Her research has taken her to such divergent places as the Himalayas in both Afghanistan and Kashmir and to the undersea world off the coast of Venezuela. Laura believes “it’s the research that keeps my paintings fresh and alive. As an artist who paints wildlife I personally need to be able to reach out and touch my subject matter. I believe it gives a reality to my work that is not 4
A Homegrown,
obtained by being sequestered in a studio.” Laura has won a number of Best Of Show Awards at art shows across the country, including the 1999 Best of Show Award at the NatureWorks Show. She was the Featured Artist at the New England Wildlife Art Show in 1992, the National Wildlife Art Show in Kansas City in 1998 and was the Featured Artist at the Nature Works Show in Tulsa in Febuary of 2008. Her work has appeared on the cover of a number of national and regional magazines including INternational Wildlife Art News Magazine. She’s won the Pennsylvania State Conservation Print Competition on three occasions. Laura painted the Companion Print of the Year in 1995 for National Whitetails Unlimited. In 2002 working closely with The Pennsylvania Rocky Mountain Elk Foundations, Laura produced the First of State Conservation Print for Pennsylvania Laura and her husband Barry operate the Mark Finberg Gallery in downtown Lancaster. She is expanding her subject matter to include scenes from around her home in southern Lancaster County.

It’s nearly 20 years since a handful of volunteers got together to create a homegrown arts festival. In 1993, there were 50 vendors, a couple food stands, and a few live bands. Now it’s one of the largest and most family-friendly arts festivals in central Pennsylvania – attracting more than 110,000 visitors over a four-day period last year. This year the People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts features more than 170 artists, nearly two dozen food vendors, and more than 30 acts on the two stages. Set in a huge circle around the edges of the Pennsylvania Military Museum grounds in Boalsburg, just three miles east of Penn State and State College, this circle of artists reveals wideopen green spaces for the children to frolic – with the children’s tents and activities in the middle. In addition, there are two large entertainment tents, which each seat about 400, a cluster of youth tents in the middle, emergency medical tent, two large dining tents, four drink booths, and four rest areas. The site is so spacious, no matter how large the crowd, visitors feel free and unfettered. Many even bring babies in strollers and their pets (on leashes, of course). One of the things that make Peoples Choice a little different from most arts festivals – all the artists, entertainers, and food vendors are from Pennsylvania. The selection of arts and food are chosen to suit the budgets of growing families.
2011 Peoples Choice Festival
“ Visitors Feel Free and Unfettered ”
Family-Friendly Arts Festival Affordable, friendly & fun Artisans display a selection of toys, jewelry, wearables, pottery, art, and home decorations from practical to decorative. Have your caricature done, buy baskets for organizing, get a new belt, a pretty necklace, a few lawn ornaments, and pictures for your wall. There are artisans who offer handcrafted treasures from fiber, glass, wood, precious metals and gems, leather, metal, and mixed media. Many central Pennsylvanians start their Christmas shopping at People’s Choice. There are youth art activities and exhibits in the middle of the circle as well. The food is nearly as much an attraction as the art. There are more than 20 food vendors on the south side of the circle, with two big dining tents in which to spread out. There’s traditional “fair food” like funnel cakes, fresh hot French fries, hot sausage sandwiches, and blooming onions. Try more exotic fare, like haluski, pierogies, gyros, Hungarian pastries, crepes, pizza, and Polish water ice. One long-time festival goer (and volunteer) got hooked on fare at the Gimmicks Concession booth out of Punxsutawney. “The crepes booth – absolutely delicious. I ate

lunch and dinner there every day last year!” Prospector’s is back with pulled pork, ribs, and chicken, Sherlock Foods is bringing their enticing BBQ roast beef, and Pennsylvania wines are back, thanks to Sand Castle Winery. There are two more ways to enjoy Pennsylvania foods. Check out the Specialty Food tent, where you can sample and buy locally produced packaged foods, from Bellefonte’s own Bonfattos wing sauces and marinades to Two Sisters Fina Cocina Mexican cooking sauces from Boalsburg – plus pretzels, jams, coffee beans, dip mixes, and maple candy made by entrepreneurial neighbors. On Saturday afternoon, get in line at the media tent for free samples from Benjamin’s Catering of Bellefonte. You’ll never be bored at People’s Choice. Two entertainment tents, north and south, are filled with nearly continuous live entertainment throughout the festival. If you can hum it or dance to it, it’s there. There’s jazz, folk, oldies, Dixieland, bluegrass, country, and choral music. Listen to rock, big bands, folk singers, and barbershop. See the Silver Spurs Line Dancers, the Brio Dance Company, and Black Cat Belly Dancers. Check out Steve Hennessy – Fun Time with Character Ed and Richard Benninghoff’s magic show. peopleschoicefestival.com
Three evening shows come with an intermission, for two full hours of Brad Krum, Elvis impersonator on Thursday, Joe Bonson & Coffee Run on Friday, and Hybrid Ice on Saturday. Children and parents love People’s Choice. The children’s activity tents are nestled in the center of the artisan circle, far from traffic. Thanks to the support of sponsor Sylvan Learning Center, many of the children’s activities are free. New this year, let the kids try their hand at Hat Crafting, presented by C. Barton McCann School of Art. Ashburn’s Animals on a Mission is not only bringing a petting zoo, but also ponies to ride. The Science Museum tent offers dozens of handson activities for the little ones, presented by Ellen McHenry, Dominion Science Center, and Penn State Altoona. Nittany Greyhound Adoptions will appear on Saturday. The State College Senior High Thespians offer face painting all four days. Kids can really let off steam in the JUMP THIS! inflatable bounce houses in the center of the circle. The Tumble Bus will be there Friday with more healthful exercise options. 5
Saturday is Character Day, with photo ops all day long – with Ike the Spike, Philly Pretzel’s Twistee, Pirate Parrot, Ronald McDonald, and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Try Dye is back to help kids make their own tie-dyed T-shirts all four days. These are two of the children’s activities that come with a fee, though donations
are welcome at all the activities. Kids and yes, adults, can enjoy a ride on the popular Little Smilin’ Choo Choo. For a small fee, it’s a fun way to travel around the festival. Stop off at the media tent and vie for great prizes. Magnum Broadcasting’s radio stations are broadcasting live, and will give you ways to win a package of tickets to Pennsylvania amusement parks and Six Flags, Maryland. Ace
Hardware donated the big prize, a fine barbecue grill. The People’s Choice Festival wouldn’t be possible without the dedicated committee, volunteers, and sponsors. Festival directors are John Madison and Cindy Rockey. Diana Stapleford (crepe lover) is the marketing and sponsorship director. Rick Snyder is the food court manager, Chris Kepler is entertainment director, and Dan Yarnell is helping out with the children’s activities. Hundreds of volunteers park cars, man the information booths, set up, tear down, clean up, and keep the festival running smoothly. The presenting sponsor is Dix Honda. Site sponsors are Liberty Hill-A Traditions of America Property and Solar Shield. First National Bank is again the poster sponsor – this year’s with flying pigs, a whimsical way to say “anything’s possible.” Media sponsors include 105.9/106.09 QWiK Rock; 970 AM WBLF; 1260 AM WPHB; FM Talk 103.7; WJAC-TV, and
The Centre County Gazette. Many others made donations and businesses provided free or discounted services. The People’s Choice Festival is an incorporated non-profit organization. The festival rents the property from the Friends of the Pennsylvania Military Museum, who also provides the for-fee parking. Free shuttle golf carts are available to help visitors move around the festival grounds. Admission is free. People’s Choice Festival is open Thursday, July 14 through Saturday, July 16 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday, July 17 from noon to 5 p.m. The festival is three miles east of State College on U.S. Business Route 322 (South Atherton Street) in the historic village of Boalsburg, birthplace of Memorial Day. Beautiful, affordable fine art, an outdoor buffet of tasty treats, and the happy sounds of music and children playing – that’s what makes People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts & Crafts one of the most pleasurable summer events in the region. Let’s raise a cup of fresh-squeezed lemonade and toast 19 years of this fantastic homegrown Pennsylvania event!
A Sterling Reputation for Creative Jewelry Sparkling designs Suzette Mason is the creator of Simply Sterling Designs out of Williamsport. There’s no doubt that this is an artform that makes her very happy. “I love making jewelry! This has been my full time job since 1999. Nothing beats sitting down at my work table and just playing!
6
I never know what I’m going to make each day or how the piece will turn out until I am completely done with it. I am a bit of a perfectionist so some pieces may take a few tries (okay, maybe many tries) until they are just the way I want them. If I wouldn’t wear it then I don’t put it out there.” Suzette uses only gemstones, freshwater pearls, and sterling silver in her designs. She goes to peopleschoicefestival.com
bead and gem shows and stores to hand pick the gems and pearls. “I find myself drawn to gemstones of bright colors or those reminiscent of the beach as that is one of my most favorite places in the world!” Stamping, sawing, oxidizing, filing, soldering, wire wrapping and stringing are some of the processes she uses. As Suzette likes to say, “Remember, there’s no such thing as too much jewelry!”

Children Can Make Colorful Creations
And the
Tr y t o t i e d y e
You’ll find Try Dye at two places at the Peoples Choice Festival, at their sales booth and in the children’s area. The family business, based in Coopersburg, has been helping people of all ages make their own tie-dye creations for almost 20 years. What began as a high school chemistry lesson has grown into a tradition of tiedying thousands of shirts a year for schools, birthday parties, Cub Scout troops, Girl Scout troops, youth groups, and events of all sizes. Kids can, for a small charge, tie-dye their own creation at a tent in the middle of the Artisan circle. Or if you want to buy professionally tie-dyed items, Try Dye will have T-shirts, pillowcases, and bags for sale. Try Dye “Make and Take Your Own Tie Dye Creation” is a craft activity for the kids that guides them through the steps of making their own high quality wearable tie-dye art. After they select the shirt, dye colors, and pattern, it’s a simple 1-2-3 process to complete a shirt, socks, bag, pillowcase, or other cool item! Every Try Dye project starts with a shirt or item that has been specially pre-treated, pre-spun, and pre-tied for the tie-dye process. Items are dyed by the participant with fabric dyes that permanently bond to the fabric fibers. This allows them to stay vibrant for years. When the participant is finished applying the dye, the shirt is wrapped to take home. It is then rinsed and washed by itself at home to complete the easy process. Tie Dye will be open for the kids every day of the fair during normal fair hours.

Music Goes Round and Round And it comes out here Kurt Kroeker, and bass player Celia MillingtonWyckoff got together to jam. They liked what they heard and shared a goal – to play good bluegrass. The vocal trio of Will, Kurt, and Celia honed its harmonies over the next several months. In February 2010, they were ready for their first show. The State College audience reacted enthusiastically. The Ridgerunners began building a large collection of traditional bluegrass material, then started writing their own. Now, they perform original songs by Will and Celia and original instrumentals by Keith and Kurt. On July 3, the band opened for Rosanne Cash at The State Theatre. The Allegheny Ridgerunners have taken the intensity of traditional bluegrass and made it their own, through their artfully blended vocals, driving instrumentals, and unique, story-based songwriting. www.alleghenyridgerunners.com. TUSSEY MOUNTAIN MOONSHINERS – South Stage 1 p.m. Winners of the 2010 DelFest Bluegrass Band Competition, the Tussey Mountain Moonshiners hail from State College and are proud to honor the bluegrass tradition of the region. “ Making Funny Faces ”
a Half-million Smiling Faces 30th caricature-versary graduate, Chip Mock started drawing caricatures at the 1980 Three Rivers Arts Festival in Pittsburgh. Since then, he’s drawn around a half-million smiling faces, all over central Pennsylvania. Chip considers himself a pretty serious guy, but give him a marker and some BIG paper – and his whimsical side comes out. He will happily twist and exaggerate your facial features while teasing and entertaining with sarcastic remarks and quirky expressions. It will have you twisting in your seat awaiting the final product. He’s not just funny, he’s

fast. He can draw more than 30 caricatures per hour. He’s won honors at the NCN convention (in black & white) and at “Fastest in the World” competitions. Chip draws at festivals, parties, proms, after-prom and graduation parties, universities, weddings, picnics, Penn State Dance Marathon, Second Mile Golf Tournament, and other charitable events throughout the year. He paints studio watercolor caricatures for individual and company gifts. If you haven’t seen your face through Chip’s eyes, give it a try
at People’s Choice. It’s an experience that will make you smile every time you look at the Mock-drawn portrait on your wall.

ly with Children’s Activities Kids love it! The circle of artisans encloses a center court of children’s activities and events – and plenty of wide open spaces to run and play. Thanks to Children’s Event sponsor, Sylvan Learning Center, the People’s Choice Festival has plenty of children’s attractions this year. The newest is Hat Crafting courtesy of the J. The State College High Thespians are back to provide face painting and arts & crafts for the kids. Donations are welcome to aid their productions. See and buy artworks made by local youngsters and get the kids involved in making their own creations. Try Dye will also be there every day, offering a chance to create an original tie-dyed T-shirt. HANDS-ON SCIENCE The Hands-On Science Museum is one of the most popular children’s activities – a wide selection of hands-on
exhibits that combine the arts with science and math. There are activities that will interest kids of all ages and parents, too! Inside the tent there are a group of activities that celebrate the lighter side of
