The 30th Annual

Bellefonte Victorian Christmas December 9, 10, and 11, 2011

This is the 30th scintillating year of Bellefonte Victorian Christmas, where the merchants, residents, and volunteers of this lovely town open its doors and hearts to holiday visitors. Every year there’s something new – with many old favorite events that have become traditions. The opening ceremony will be held Friday evening, December 9 at 6:30 p.m. in the comfort of the Bellefonte Elementary School Auditorium. First, there’s a prelude of Christmas music by the Bellefonte Community Band. Guests will receive a warm welcome from Mr. Charles Dickens on the steps of the Bellefonte Elementary School. The ceremony itself will feature performances from the Nittany Knights, and local school choirs. The finale will be a preview of A Dickens Holiday Show. Then join your neighbors in the school lobby for a cookie and hotchocolate reception provided by the Bellefonte Moose Lodge 206. The weekend will be ushered in with A Gaslight Gala, a posh, themed evening of exquisite comestibles, elegant service, and top-notch entertainment. Professional singers, actors, and musicians present Victorian traditions like the Yule Log Ceremony, the Cheese Contest, cameo solos, and Dickens ever popular staging of A Christmas Carol. It’s Thursday evening, December 8, at 7 p.m. at the American Philatelic Society Building, 100 Match Factory Place. The $75 admission includes dinner and Dickens show. Reservations required. In the Spirit of Christmases Past:

Dickens Classics, Characters & Events In Victorian times, entertainment was up close and personal – sing-alongs, skits, and parlor games – the Yule log, storytelling, and magicians. Join the newly reformed Ebeneezer Scrooge and the father of modern Christmas, Mister Charles Dickens, as they bring the joyous Victorian Era to life once again at Bellefonte Victorian Christmas 2011. Charles, Scrooge, Mr. and Mrs. Fezziwig, and Miss Belle to name a few, will be on hand to perform exciting brunch – and dinnetheatre shows at the Match Factory throughout the weekend – all to benefit “Victorian Christmases future!” A Gaslight Gala with Charles Dickens is an elegant and exclusive event to be attended by a fortunate few. Dress in Victorian garb or your holiday finery and enjoy this posh, themed evening marked

8

by exquisite comestibles, doting service, top-notch entertainment, and top-shelf libations. The feast will be catered by Hoag’s Catering. You’ll be charmed with courseby-course interactive theatricals by Dickens, Scrooge & Company, all for the benefit of Bellefonte Victorian Christmas. Highlights of the evening include a Cheshire Cheese Contest, a wacky retelling of Twas the Night before Christmas, Miss Belle’s heartfelt rendition of the timeless carol, Oh Holy Night,

Music, Magic & Merriment The sounds of Christmas can be heard all over the town - all weekend long. From Friday’s opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m., featuring the Bellefonte Community Band, Nittany Knights, and local choirs to the grand finale, the Victorian Christmas Community Choir Concert at 7:30 p.m. Sunday evening, music will raise the holiday spirit in every heart. There are sing-along songs at the Victorian High Tea & Brunch, carolers roaming the streets, Steinway piano concerts at the historical museum, and a soloist singing Oh, Holy Night at the Gaslight Gala. Trinity United Methodist Church is filled with instruments

and song from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, including folk, trombones, flutes, Celtic, piano, choirs, and a woodwind quintet. The Bellefonte Community Band presents its Christmas concert Saturday evening at the First Presbyterian Church. The Victorian Christmas Singers present their concert Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. John’s. You never know when the Dickens troupe will break into song – at special presentations and while roaming the festive streets. Enjoy the Victorian Christmas Community Choir Concert, directed by Miriam Locklin, Sunday evening at 7:30 p.m. at the Bellefonte High School

theatre. Larger than the churches where this popular concert was once held, the high school should accommodate everyone who wants to attend. For many, this top-notch presentation is their “official beginning” to the Christmas season. All of the musical performances are free, with the exception of those at the Gaslight Gala, High Tea & Brunch, and Dinner with Dickens – all held at the American Philatelic Society building. Make your reservations today and see the article about the Dickens feasts in this issue. Here’s a complete list of musical and theatrical events at Victorian Christmas, all free except noted with an *.

Bellefonte Victorian Christmas 2011

Gifts Made by Hand - From the Heart The Arts & Crafts Show is a cooperative effort of the Bellefonte Historical and Cultural Association and The Bellefonte Arts & Craft Fair Committee. This is a wonderful place to start – or finish – your Christmas shopping. You may be assured that these hand-made pieces are made in the U.S.A. – in the best traditions of quality and taste. You’ll find framed artwork and photos, handmade jewelry and pottery, cozy clothing and needlework, glass and wood, handy housewares, and pretty decorations. Toys for the kids, thoughtful gifts for men, and plenty of stocking stuffers are on sale in three different town venues. Vendors will show off their artfully made wares on Saturday, December 10 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, December 11

from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bellefonte YMCA on High Street, the Bellefonte Elementary School on the corner of Allegheny and Linn Streets, and – new this year – the Bellefonte Middle School on School Street. Bellefonte Middle School will feature handcrafted artisan works, local non-profit organization fundraisers, and buy – and sell

vendors. If you’re taking the shuttle bus from the high school and middle school, the middle school arts and crafts show will be your shopping stop nearest the car! Food concessions will be available at all three, and there are plenty of hometown lunches, dinners, snacks, and sweet treats available throughout Bellefonte.
