STOU TIPS Cameras and photography are important while traveling, and these days, taking pictures is a part of daily life for a lot of people too. Professional photographers can spend years practicing and reading books, but a few simple guidelines can help the average person take great pictures at home or on the road. Perhaps the most important advice is to be creative and pay close attention to what’s in the frame before you take a picture. A lot of photographers recommend the “rule of three”, meaning that flat lines (like the horizon) should be in the top third or bottom third — not running through the center of your photo. You can also try placing the subject of your picture artistically, so that it’s not always just in the center but is maybe lower, higher or off to one side. In addition to thinking creatively about the composition of your photos, also pay close attention to the lighting and how your camera responds in differently lit conditions. Sometimes it may automatically use the flash even though a picture without flash may look better. It’s important to understand what your camera can do so you can adjust it to help you take the best photos that you can.
