Stowmarket Town Football Club is thrilled to introduce Chris Casement as the club’s new manager/player, with a vast array of experience and achievements garnered from his 18 years in football, both as a professional footballer and coach, Chris is set to bring a new level of success to the club.
With over 450 senior games under his belt, Chris has a proven track record of success on the pitch. He played a key role in leading Wycombe Wanderers to promotion to EFL League 1 in the 08/09 season and won six League titles with Linfield FC in Northern Ireland. Additionally, he was a member of the Ipswich Town FC team that lifted the FA Youth Cup in 2005. He also boasts international experience, having represented Northern Ireland at the U17, U19, U21, and senior level.
As a coach, Chris has eight years of experience in Northern Ireland and England, working with age groups from U8s to U18s. He has also worked as Head Recruitment Officer for Suffolk, Norfolk & Cambridgeshire and as a Youth Coach at Ipswich Town FC.
Chris passion for the game, combined with his extensive experience, has already made him a pivotal part of Stowmarket Town’s success in recent seasons as a player. Chris would like to express his excitement about this new opportunity, stating,
“First of all I’m delighted & excited to be the new manager of Stowmarket Town FC. It’s something I’ve been working towards for a while now, with my playing years catching up on me. I’d like to thank Kev & the rest of the board for showing great faith in me as a young manager to take the club forward. I’m looking forward to working with a great group of players to see what can be achieved”
The board of directors would like to extend a massive thank you to Wilks and Munno for stepping up in the interim position and helping to guide the club through a difficult period. Their dedication and hard work has not gone unnoticed, and they will continue to play a vital role at Stowmarket Town Football Club. With the combined experience and enthusiasm of Chris, Wilks, and Munno.
The club is poised for a bright future. Best of luck to Chris as he takes us forward!
SOMETHING I’VE BEEN WORKING TOWARDS FOR A WHILE NOW, WITH MY PLAYING YEARS CATCHING UP ON ME.
Stowmarket Town FC is proud to announce the recent progress of its young players in the first team. Over the past few weeks, we’ve seen a number of our reserves players step up and make meaningful contributions to the first team, showcasing the bright future that lies ahead for our club.
Kieran Morley, a talented midfielder/striker and local Stowmarket boy, has already made a significant impact with 7 goals in 10 games for our reserves squad. Kieran, who is related to one of our own, Tony Morley, has been called up to the first team on several occasions and is eagerly waiting for the opportunity to showcase his talent and replicate his form in the first team.
In his own words, “It’s been an honour to be involved with the first team again all these years after last being with them! To be called up again a decade later is a dream come true. As a Stowmarket boy through and through, I’m relishing the chance and can’t wait to get going.” We’re confident that Kieran has a bright future ahead of him and believe that he will continue to make a positive impact.
Joel Simmons, another promising young player, has shown great potential in both the reserves and first team. Craig Brown (Jimmy), our Reserves Team manager says, Joel is “my most consistent player in my squad.” Jimmy also praised Joel’s first team contributions, noting that “he has great feet and low centre of gravity, which makes him a valuable asset on the pitch.”
Dan Knights, a local left-back, has been called up to the first team and is eager to make an impression. With his talent and commitment, we’re confident that he has a bright future ahead of him.
In addition to our reserves players, we’re thrilled to see two U18 players from Liam Hawkins’ team called up to the first team.
We’re very excited for the future of Zach Gayfer, who, at only 16 years old, was named Man of the Match on his full debut against Hullbridge. His hard work and dedication have earned him a two-week trial with Ipswich Town, which is a testament to his exceptional talent and potential. It’s remarkable that after just one game for our first team, Zach has been given such a great opportunity, and we’re excited to see how he continues to progress.
Oliver Okeh is another young player who has been called up by Chris Casement for the Gorleston match. While he hasn’t played for the first team yet, it’s a great sign that Chris is using young players and giving them opportunities to develop.
As we enter a new era, we’re excited to see the progress of our young players and reserves squad in the first team. At Stowmarket Town FC, we’re committed to investing in the future of our club by turning to our reserves and youth. We believe in supporting and nurturing our young talent to bring success to Stowmarket Town FC. Let’s continue to support our young players as they make a positive impact at our club.
Ryan Capon is an exciting goalkeeper for Stowmarket Town. Capon began his journey at the club aged 12 and has progressed through the ranks, starting with the U12’s, and working his way up to the U18’s reserves. He made his first-team debut at just 17 years old last season, showcasing his impressive abilities as a goalkeeper.
Capon is a Stowmarket man through and through, apart from his year at Sudbury Academy. Speaking about his future, he said, “I’m excited by what the future may hold football wise going forward. I’ve always had my hopes in the future at Stow.” Capon is grateful to the staff and players at the club for their guidance, and he credits his development to watching goalkeeper Bradders closely. He hopes to continue pushing forward and help the club progress in the future.
Capon is just one of many young players at the club who are eager to prove themselves. He said, “There’s so many young players like me, chomping at the bit to show what they can do. It’s exciting times for sure.” With his impressive performances at youth level and his debut for the senior team, Capon is an exciting prospect for the club. With the right guidance and support from the coaches and senior players, he has the potential to become a star player for Stowmarket Town and beyond.
Abuse in all sport has now become a noticeably massive thing and especially in football. Since the advent of that day a year ago when some very high-profile players told their very distressing stories live on the Victoria Derbyshire show and subsequently brought about the advent and birth of the wonderful organisation The Offside Trust who have done amazing work with no funding from The Football association at all to help them and a very minimal amount from the PFA. Their help has given me the strength to deal with what happened to me all those years ago as it did to them.
As a young child I wanted nothing more than to watch football, play football and be a professional footballer. My uncle used to take me to watch Luton Town from the age of seven onwards at first my uncle was wonderful nothing was too much trouble and enjoyed our visits to watch Luton at home and used to get extremely excited at around noon awaiting my uncle’s arrival to take me and even have a kick about in the park before the game. Unfortunately, there was an ulterior motive I later found out to this as from the age of around nine we used to go to coaching sessions with a team on our way to football under the guise of they worked for Luton Town and if I did well, I would have a chance to fulfil my dreams.
Just as the season started and the coaching session became more intense, I was told that they could help me fulfil my dreams if I did something for them after the games. At first it was nothing too bad just touching etc of parts of their anatomy, but it slowly became a lot more sinister with more of our team involved in some sadistic and sordid acts including being raped over one hundred times, some even photographed and filmed. When we left the so-called house, we were all given gifts and told that we must never tell anyone that these things had happened.
The older I got the more the acts became more depraved, and the threats became even more dreadful should we go to the police etc or even tell what had happened. I retreated into a shell on my return home and would turn into an insular and exceedingly difficult person. Luckily once I reached the age of twelve my
uncle no longer came to get me and the trips to football stopped as luckily, I found a more local club to allow me to play.
This club was well run and very safe with good coaches and it made me wonder what and why the original team coaches had asked me to do the things they did. I was still fearful of telling my parents so hid the sordid things away for many many years.
About 9 years ago I was summonsed to a meeting at a solicitor’s office in London after my uncle had died and left his will. I was taken to a side room and given a letter from my uncle by the solicitor that he instructed me was going to be read out at the will reading. The letter detailed my uncles and his friends sordid past and was his was of asking the family for forgiveness from his crimes, unfortunately it was to be announced that he had abused a member of the family with his friends in an unbelievably bad way and wanted forgiveness.
The family had no idea but as you can imagine it was exceptionally harrowing for me and my mum and sisters and really was difficult for all to take, unfortunately I was blamed and called a liar by most of his side of the family meaning that I was cast aside as an outcast by that side of the family.
From that moment on I became an exceedingly difficult person to even talk to and took to drinking excessively ended up losing my wife, house, and a lot of family members. I also had to attend two court cases to see some of the dreadful people sentenced which was an exceedingly difficult experience.
As with all people that have suffered any sort of abuse, I tried to take my own life about a year ago but was found and have regular treatment from counsellors and doctors to ensure I can make the best recovery possible from these dreadful nightmares.
I apologise if this is harrowing reading, but it is the only way to get the message across and I will say I have left out the dreadful bits as no one should go through what I and my friends did for over those horrible years meaning most of us lost our childhood and still struggle dreadfully on the difficult days which we all still have.

MANAGERAFC (Amalgamated Football Club) Sudbury was formed on Tuesday 1st June 1999 from the amalgamation of Sudbury Town (founded 1885) and Sudbury Wanderers (founded 1958) making it then the newest senior club in East Anglia.
The first ever game was played at The Priory Stadium (the previous home of Town) on 17th July 1999 against a full Colchester United side in the Harwich Charity Cup Centenary Shield Semi-Final, and saw a 2-4 defeat after extra time in front of 397 spectators.
The club now plays at King’s Marsh, Brundon Lane, Sudbury, which Wanderers purchased in 1972 and were previously water meadows, from which two pitches and a training area were created. The clubhouse was opened in 1985 and the dressing rooms in 1991. Floodlights were added in 1992 and the following year a 200-seat stand was built in addition to the two areas behind the goals being covered. In 2000 a new stand, ‘The Shed’, was opened and caters for 300 standing fans.
The two clubs left behind proud histories:
Sudbury Town
one of the founder members of the Suffolk County Football Association in 1885. They reached the second round proper of the F.A. Cup in 1996-97 having defeated Brighton And Hove Albion in the first round after a replay and an exciting penalty shoot-out. Brentford then defeated them with the tie being played at Layer road Colchester in the Second Round. The F.A. Vase provided the club with some memorable achievements. Finalists in 1989, 26,478 watched that final at the old Wembley Stadium, which the Borough drew with Tamworth. The replay was sadly lost the next week at Peterborough United. In addition, Sudbury Town reached the semi-finals twice and also one quarter-final.

Sudbury Town played for seven seasons in the Southern League, three of these being in the Premier Division. They won the League Cup and were runners-up on another occasion. They also appeared in 22 finals of the Suffolk Premier Cup, winning it 13 times. Wanderers won the same competition in 1997-98 after a replay.
Sudbury Wanderers progressed through the Halstead League, the Essex and Suffolk Border League and then the First and Premier Divisions of the Eastern Counties League. On the way they were three times finalists in the Suffolk Senior Cup at Portman Road, winning the trophy in 1991-92. In the F.A. Vase the club twice reached the last eight and once the last sixteen. The Jewson League Cup was won in 1999, defeating Felixstowe Port And Town 7-2 at Woodbridge.
In their first season 1999-2000, A.F.C. Sudbury managed by ex-Wanderers manager Keith Martin, finished third in the Jewson Premier League and the Reserve side won the Premier League title in the Essex and Suffolk Border League. In the summer of 2000 the club won the first St. Nicholas’ Hospice Charity Cup tournament at Bury Town’s Ram Meadow ground, defeating Mildenhall Town 5-0.
In season 2000-2001 the club powered their way to the Jewson League Premier title, reached the first round proper of the F.A. Cup (where they were defeated away at Darlington) and the Reserves won the Essex and Suffolk Border League Cup.
Season 2001-2002 saw the club retained the Jewson League and reached the semi-finals of the F.A. Vase before losing 2-0 on aggregate to Tiptree United. They also defeated Felixstowe and Walton 3-1 in the final of the Suffolk Premier Cup at Hadleigh.
In 2002-2003 the club again retained the Jewson League Premier title, and won the Suffolk Premier Cup with victory over Mildenhall Town. They also reached the final of the Carlsberg F.A. Vase played at Upton Park,
being beaten 2-1 by Brigg Town. After this the club’s first manager Keith Martin stepped down and was replaced by the reserve team manager Gary Harvey.

The new season 2005-2006 saw the club continued to play in the Ridgeons Premier League and finished third in the table after leading for the majority of it. The Ridgeons League Cup was won for the first time in the club’s history and the fifth round of the F.A. Vase was also reached.
The Reserve side played in the newly formed Ridgeons Reserve League Southern Division and won that. In the play off between the North and South winners, they were runners up. The highlight of their season was winning the Suffolk Junior Cup at Portman Road Ipswich.
For the 2006-2007 season the club decided to accept promotion up the non-league pyramid

to Step 4, and a position in the new Ryman League Division One North. The club also changed managers with Mark Morsley taking over from Gary Harvey, to become the club’s third manager since their creation. Morsley joined the club after guiding Needham Market in the previous three seasons and he brought a good backroom staff to King’s Marsh with him. The season panned out to be a good one, reaching the play-off finals in the league and did well in other competitions. Pre-season was fairly ordinary but the start of the Ryman League saw the first four games won.
The first ever game was played at The Priory Stadium (the previous home of Town) on 17th July 1999 against a full Colchester United side in the Harwich Charity Cup Centenary Shield Semi-Final, and saw a 2-4 defeat after extra time in front of 397 spectators.
In the F.A. Cup the club made it to the Fourth Qualifying Round going out to a last minute goal to Leatherhead. Success in that and the F.A. Trophy where the First Round was reached going out away at Newport County meant the league games fell behind. Further progression in the Ryman League Cup saw the club reached the Quarter Finals before being defeated at Staines Town also slowed league progress.
The club now plays at King’s Marsh, Brundon Lane, Sudbury, which Wanderers purchased in 1972 and were previously water meadows, from which two pitches and a training area were created. The two clubs left behind proud histories:
From the end of December 2006 AFC played only League games (28) something that had not been done in previous seasons due to the F.A. Vase. The league position improved from thirteenth to eventually on the last day of the league season finishing in fifth to clinch the last play-off place.
Sudbury Town
A fine 4-2 away win in the play off semi-final against Enfield Town, saw AFC have to travel to Harlow Town. Again the team showed its resilience going two goals down before levelling in the final two minutes. Extra time could not separate the two sides but AFC failed in the penalty shoot out, to miss out on promotion at the first time of asking.

The 2007-2008 season will go down as the nearly season. The club nearly won promotion and they nearly won the Ryman League Cup, but nearly was not good enough as they failed in both. The club were still under the guidance of manager Mark Morsley aided by his now assistant Nicky Smith and coach Paul Skingley as the season started, and said an early goodbye in the F.A. Cup with neighbours Bury Town winning at King’s Marsh. In the F.A Trophy AFC also made an early exit losing in the First Qualifying Round at Southern Premier side King’s Lynn in a replay. This combined with a defeat at Mildenhall Town in the Suffolk Premier Cup left only the League and League Cup to battle for.
Improvements were made to the Brundon Lane ground with it becoming fully enclosed, new turnstiles and a fully automated sprinkler system installed. The pitch was also revitalised with a professional groundsman being employed.

On Saturday, February 25th, we suffered a 4-1 loss to Halstead away from home. With six players unavailable and only three substitutes, I knew it would be a challenging game, especially since Halstead is a tough place to secure a victory. We were looking for a positive response after our defeat to Hadleigh in another cup match, where we did not perform to our potential. Despite being in the game throughout, we made some defensive errors that cost us, and Liam Knights scored his third goal of the season. Nevertheless, we will pick ourselves up and prepare for our next match on Saturday at home against Whitton United reserves. I am confident that if we approach the game with the same attitude and dedication, we will earn the crucial three points. Lastly, I would like to wish Kieran Morley a speedy recovery from his injury while playing with the first team on Saturday. It is gratifying to see my former striker doing so well, and I commend Chris for giving my players an opportunity.
At Greens Meadow on Saturday, we hosted our local rivals, Whitton United Reserves. The game started off well for us as we put pressure on Whitton’s defense with Jack WR causing trouble. In fact, it was Jack who scored the first goal of the game, putting us 1-0 up in the second minute. Unfortunately, Whitton equalized soon after due to a defensive error on our part.
However, we were awarded a penalty in the 32nd minute, thanks to a clear handball by the Whitton full-back. Chase Holland successfully converted the penalty, putting us back in the lead. But our joy was short-lived as another defensive mix-up allowed Whitton to score their second equalizer just two minutes later.
To make matters worse, a late tackle by a Whitton forward on Ryan Capon, our returning goalkeeper, caused a gash on his shin. Despite our belief that it warranted at least a yellow card or red card, no action was taken. Nonetheless, Isaac Read, our young goalkeeper who has been performing consistently throughout the season, stepped up and was fantastic for the rest of the game.
At halftime, I encouraged the team not to let Whitton drag us down and to continue playing the same way. The team did just that, and impressive young Joel Simmons scored the winning goal in the 72nd minute, giving us a well-deserved 3 points.
