from the PUBLISHER AS A KID, WEDDINGS MEANT one thing. A chance to see my cousins, run around, wreak small-scale havoc — this was the 1960s, after all. As a young adult, weddings meant trying to sneak a drink or just sneaking off, avoiding getting asked to dance. As an adult, going to a wedding took on greater meaning, and until the age of 25 it wasn’t something I gave much thought to other than some day, I’d be married. Wife, kids, picket fence. Still, the idea of getting married — that special day and all the associated trappings — never took up space in my head other than, as a man, this is what would happen some — one — day. Then I came out. Any idea of marriage became moot. Gay couples can’t marry. After a couple decades of never thinking about getting hitched, Vermont passed civil unions, a secondclass sort of matrimony but which still afforded many of the rights and responsibilities of being married. PETE HARTT, AT CENTER, WITH JIM RICE AND GREG POPA AT THEIR CIVIL UNION IN 2000. So, with no fanfare, little thought and for the silliest of reasons, Jim and I rounded up Pete Hartt, a friend, colleague and newly minted justice of the peace, to lead our ceremony, which consisted of the two of us, in heavy coats in early February, in our 150-year-old barn, surrounded by three Jersey heifers and a Hereford, Pete’s girlfriend Virginia as witness, and the permeating scent of cow. Our reason for making it “official?” We were going to Hawai’i and if the plane crashed we wanted to … I’m not sure at this point. Jim was the keeper of memories. I have trouble paying attention. The highlight of that oh-so-short ceremony came as Bessie let loose just as we said, “I do.” (Important note: Don’t stand behind a Publisher Gregory J. Popa cow while getting married.) For Jane Ackerman, who owns Kith & Kin, an event and wedding planning business in Norwich. “There are all different mediums to play with, from food, to flowers, to the ceremony. If you figure out what goes together, it can make for a lovely, unique personalized ceremony.”

FLOWER POWER The realm of blooms and shoots offers endless possibilities when weaving family and culture into a wedding. It could be a special color, a vase that reminds the couple of home or a flower native to their family’s place of origin. Flowers can cast a wedding in a nostalgic glow, said floral designer Erin Ostreicher. “I often ask if living or departed family members close to the couple have or had flowers that they especially enjoyed,” said Ostreicher, who runs wedding and floral design business Nectar & Root, based in Stowe and Morrisville. “If they are in season, we work to incorporate those into bouquets or centerpieces.” She has woven Hawaiian wedding leis, provided flowers as part of a Buddhist wedding and highlighted heirloom wedding chuppahs, a traditional canopy symbolizing a Jewish couple’s future home. Similarly, Ackerman described a ceremony where the couple used one of their grandmother’s vintage shawls as drapery on their chuppah, which members of the wedding party held over the couple. “It really is emblematic of bringing the whole family, both biological and otherwise, together to witness and bless the decision to get married,” said Ackerman. At a frosty February wedding earlier this year, Ostreicher speckled bright gladiolas throughout the event and in the bridal bouquet, a nod to bride Julie Kent’s family who used to run a gladiola flower farm many generations ago. Her maternal grandfather, who worked as a postman, and her grandmother grew glads and strawberries, selling them at a small farmstand in New York. “Glads have always been a huge part of my family, and this was a really special way to include them,” said Kent. Soft pastel hydrangeas — her late father’s favorite flower and a reminder of him — dotted arrangements around the venue. “It was such a small wedding because of the pandemic, and we couldn’t have everyone there we wanted to,” said Kent. “But having flowers that represented both sides of my family — it was like they were there with us.” At an autumn elopement, where the couple sauntered into Vermont’s red and gold woods with a handful of guests, Ostreicher matched a Celtic handfasting vow ribbon to the one tied around the bridal bouquet. Handfasting is an ancient Celtic tradition symbolizing two lives binding together. THE CEREMONY Incorporating various traditions into the wedding ceremony also creates more opportunity for participation, which can further personalize the celebration, said Ackerman. >>

Jesse photographed our wedding in October 2020 and exceeded every expectation we had! Not only did the photos come out unbelievable, but Jesse captured all of the fun and love from the day. He made us feel at ease from the start, which made everything run smoothly. He knows all the best spots in Stowe for photographs and guided us through how to get exactly what we were looking for from our photos. We had so much fun with him! Highly, highly recommended.

One couple she worked with centered their event around the joining of their families and Polish and Indian cultures. During the outdoor ceremony, the couple held hands and walked around a fire circle as part of the traditional Hindu ritual, the sapta-pad, or seven steps around the sacred fire; each step symbolized eternal friendship and the couple’s journey together through life. Later, the couple took part in a bread and salt blessing, a Polish wedding custom. “It was really fun to figure out how to represent both cultures in the ceremony,” Ackerman recalled. Displaying vintage family HINKLEY PHOTOGRAPHY photographs or old wedding portraits around the reception is another sweet way to highlight tradition, she added. Ostreicher suggested clients share with guests the cultural and familial significance behind special elements on printed ceremony programs or via a mention on their wedding website. “Helping to bring your other guests into the circle of learning and celebrating these personal touches makes for an even more connected and celebratory experience,” she said.>>

FESTIVE FARE Food — the best part of the wedding — or at least a close second. All kidding aside, what better way to imbibe the food of love than to cook tradition into the menu? For a dimple of dumplings, Brattleboro-based Cai’s Dim Sum Catering cooks up authentic Chinese fare with roots in Sichuan and Shanghai cuisine for small and large weddings. The business is led by owner and chef Cai Xi, who grew up in China, but after 30 years living in the Green Mountain State loves weaving Vermont accents into her childhood favorites. She uses maple syrup as a sweetener in many dishes and also offers vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. “Making food is making art,” said Xi, who is also a local artist. “The wedding is a starting point; we bring culture and color to their future.” Dim sum literally means “touching heart,” Xi added 18

— a dollop of love perfect for sharing on a wedding day. At Harmony’s Kitchen, an Afro fusion catering business in Burlington, owner Harmony Edosomwan’s mission is “to fill your bellies and your hearts with exuberant joy.” Her kitchen offers Afro fusion dishes inspired by multiple African diasporas, and she also offers vegan options. For true Vermont love birds hoping to feature their state heritage in their nuptials, the warm, amber taste of maple syrup is an obvious choice. Mount Mansfield Maple Products in Winooski offers pocket-sized maple syrup wedding favors for guests to take home, and Moose Mountain Maple in Underhill will spin maple cotton candy on the spot. “I love when couples make it a goal to weave their culture, heritage and family into their Vermont wedding,” said Ostreicher. “There is absolutely something special about Vermont weddings.”

REAL WEDDINGS

jennifer &jeff OCTOBER 24, 2020 STOWE, VT

Jeff proposed to Jennifer on top of snowy Stratton Mountain, later marrying at Spruce Peak at Stowe in the fall of 2020, in an intimate ceremony surrounded by the reds, oranges and yelllows of fall. The love birds had survived a pandemic together, but their relationship was first tested almost six years ago, soon after their first date. The two met in 2015 when Jeff became a regular at a restaurant where Jennifer worked. He had broken his hand skiing and dropped by regularly to chat. She would say it was love at first sight, and he would say that her beauty intimidated him.

20

Soon after their first date, however, Jen was diagnosed with breast cancer. As Jeff stuck by her side, supporting her through the experience and into recovery he knew they had something special. Especially when Jennifer entrusted him to take care of her dog, Jack. They’ve become old friends, according to Jeff, after “a little tough love.” Planning a wedding during a pandemic was challenging, needless to say, but taking a long weekend in Vermont with close family turned out to be the perfect breath of fresh air after a year of lockdowns and isolation. Jennifer and Jeff had the small wedding of their dreams, ending the night with dinner and dancing at the Cottage at Spruce Peak.

music & memories TWO THINGS THAT GO HAND IN HAND BY SCOOTER MACMILLAN

IN THE MID-1970S, I was married in the woods next to a mountain stream in a white linen shirt and bell bottoms. My aunt said I looked like I was wearing pajamas. During the ceremony a couple of our friends sang the Eagles’ “Take It Easy,” accompanying themselves on acoustic guitar. My bride and I didn’t choose that song. It was good that we were happy with “Take It Easy,” as it was one of the few songs our friends knew. Serendipitously, it was a perfect fit for the occasion and the setting. >> 28

CLOVE HITCH PHOTOGRAPHY

More than four decades later, any time I hear “Take It Easy” an involuntarily shiver runs down my spine, immediately yanking my thoughts away from whatever I’m supposed to be focused on. I am transported back to a babbling stream, light filtering through a canopy of pine trees, murmured vows, tears, laughter and so many other memories of a precious moment in my life. The music at your wedding will be with you for a long, long time. Make sure it’s something you will be happy to have echoing on a perpetual replay as reminiscences sneak up on you for years and years to come.

GOING LIVE Although Abigail Evans, of Williston, loves to play traditional classical music as a member of Mountain Strings, she said for her wedding she would pick something that was not “uptight classical.” She said it might be something from Andrew Bird. Popular wedding ceremony songs couples request from Mountain Strings include “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri, “All You Need Is Love” by the Beatles or something from the film and play, “Mamma Mia.” Of course, Evans strongly advocates for live music for the ceremony. She will schedule the number of musicians and which instruments a couple wants from the musicians who have played with Mountain Strings. “We figure out what the wedding party wants, whether it’s two violins, a violin or a cello,” Evans said, and whether they want a solo, duo, trio or quartet. >>

The group has an extensive repertoire and will learn new song a couple requests. Evans said Mountain Strings once even learned original music composed by the groom. St. George’s Hans Jenny, who books musicians under the moniker Best Bands, said he has been scheduling both his own band, A House on Fire, and other bands for weddings for more than 40 years. A House on Fire can play during the ceremony and reception. Jenny said he can provide a four-piece combo up to a big band with multiple vocalists. “A band can make an event memorable in a way that a DJ can’t,” Jenny said. “There’s an exchange between a live band and an audience.” The couple traditionally chooses the music for the first dance at the reception, he said. Popular first songs for the band include “Something in the Way She Moves” by the Beatles or songs by John PEAK DJ PICKS Legend, Beyoncé or Frank Signed, Sealed, Delivered (I’m Yours) Sinatra. – Stevie Wonder To get peoYou Are the Best Thing ple dancing at – Ray LaMontagne the reception, couples often pick songs such as “Come On Eileen” by Dexys Midnight Runners, “Valerie” as sung by Amy Winehouse, “Don’t Stop ‘til You Get Enough” by Michael Jackson, “Higher Love” by Steve Winwood or “Shut Up and Dance” by Walk the Moon.

HEY MR. DJ Newton Wells, of Morristown, employs 12 DJs at his company Peak Entertainment. He tells couples if they have the budget for live music, it will add an air of elegance to their wedding, but it’s not an either-or situation. Increasingly, it’s both live musicians and a DJ. “Most musicians don’t want to have anything to do with microphones,” Wells said, but a DJ can provide mics and a sound system. He said a DJ will often put a small lavalier microphone on the officiant’s collar and another microphone off to the side where someone can read a poem or sing and be heard. Many times, Wells said, live musicians will play before the ceremony, during the processional as the wedding party enters and at other times during the wedding, but the DJ will play a recorded song as the couple walks down and then away from the aisle to indicate the ceremony is over — and the party has started. “The days of just hiring a band are ending. Many couples want a live band presence on the stage for the reception, but for all the hot new stuff that just came out two months ago, the bride wants to hear that and so do all of her friends,” Wells said. Often, his DJs will work with a live band at the reception, playing during breaks and for 30 minutes after the band stops to “really blow it out” and send the people home.

JOKES ASIDE, Hannah said from their first date, she never wanted it to end. “I’m still falling in love with him and that’s a really amazing thing,” she said. Hannah and Ross married in an intimate ceremony at Starry Night Café in North Ferrisburgh last fall, officiated by close friend, Brian McVey, and surrounded by a small gathering of friends and family members. The couple knew they wanted a small wedding and weren’t attached to traditional elements like a wedding party, shower or rehearsal dinner. Instead of bridesmaids or groomsmen, a few dear friends weathered the planning storm with them, offering support through stressful moments, wedding dress shopping “and to eat sandwiches and cheers" as they prepped for the big day, said Hannah. “You need a support system because questions like, ‘Can I get a plus one to bring a blind date to your wedding?’ do happen and that kind of hilarity should be shared,” she added. One of Hannah’s childhood friends, Julie Luckett, now a professional photographer, is the master behind the couple’s whimsical photographs. Some family members had to tune in via Zoom, due to travel restrictions, which was hard on the both of them. Hannah recalled some difficult phone conversations but ultimately, she said, the pandemic seemed to reveal what really mattered to the couple. The wedding wasn’t what they expected, nor quite what they imagined — “and it was perfect,” said Hannah. “What mattered to us was having a really great day that we’d always remember and closing it out with good food, drink and friends — all while keeping everyone safe amid the pandemic and we were able to accomplish that,” she said. While both Ross and Hannah grew up in Vermont, attended the same high school in Hinesburg, the same college — the University of Vermont — and knew many people in common, their paths somehow kept missing each other. It wasn’t until what Hannah called, “a serendipitous series of events” that their paths finally crossed. Even then, she said, Ross had to convince her to go on a date with him. “I think he asked me to dinner multiple times before I finally took the leap and said yes,” she said. “The rest is pretty much history.” The two share a love for mythology, science fiction TV, fantasy novels, outdoor adventures and eating tacos. But more than that, Hannah said, the pair solves problems together and create a “safe and caring space” from which they hope to build their life 35

INVESTMENT BEAUTY

COURTESY OF GLOWAESTHETIC

44

According to the nonprofit Global Wellness Institute, the worldwide wellness market comprises a $4.5 trillion annual economy. About a trillion of that covers personal care, beauty and anti-aging — much more than on physical activity, nutrition and even preventive medicine. We get it. Couples in Vermont spent an average of $34,500 on weddings in 2019, according to The Wedding Report. This includes combined hair, makeup and manicure expenses of nearly $200 per person, plus photography and videography costs averaging $3,800. Maria Gould, co-owner and licensed esthetician at Glowaesthetics Medical Spa & Beauty Boutique in South Burlington, offers minimally invasive treatments ranging from day-spa favorites like facials, airbrush tanning, massages, eyelash lifting and tinting to practices requiring a little more commitment — eyelash extensions, eyebrow microblading, chemical peels or laser hair removal. Also available are “cosmedical” services like injectable facial fillers that can add or replace soft-tissue volume or fill in lines and indentations, or neuromodulators that are injected into specific muscle groups to weaken the muscle and soften lines in the skin. Assurance to those on the fence, care can be taken to prevent the stereotypical “frozen” face once associated with Botox and similar products.. “There actually is a fear — people don’t want to have that frozen look, they don’t want to look like ‘Real Housewives,’” said Christine Keelan, Glow co-owner and licensed esthetician. The group’s medical director, Ashely DiMeola, said for her it’s about function — not Instagram trends. Beauty is completely subjective and intensely personal — and follows the individuals’ own style.

“We have the bride or the client that comes in that really doesn’t wear any makeup and maybe we’re getting them just on some preventative skincare,” DiMeola said. “It’s about really empowering people to feel comfortable in their own skin, and empowering them to be able to make choices for themselves that make them feel beautiful, no matter what way that is.” TAILOR-MADE TREATMENTS “We focus on skin health,” Keelan said. She loves treatments like the hydrafacial, a treatment that deep cleans, exfoliates and hydrates using a water- and suction-powered device. First-timers can see amazing results, Keelan said, but over time the skin improvement is even more significant. “There’s a lot of people who come in and say, ‘The last time I had a facial was a year ago,’ or ‘I’ve never had a facial.’ And it surprises me every time because they go to the dentist — health-wise, they’re like, I know I have to clean my teeth.” The smile is certainly important, Keelan said, “but you know, it’s face first.” The Glow team said most spouses-to-be come in around six months before the wedding, but a year is even better for a consultation to discuss desired results, timing and expectations. Some choose to lock down their look before the trial run of the makeup so they can see the full results before the big day. “We want not only for them to consider the photos and the angles, but how their makeup looks when their texture and tone has changed,” DiMeola said. Gradual changes over months or years “have a pretty significant impact if the time is given to do that.” Chemical peels can be used to address skin conditions, including hyperpigmentation, acne, scarring and signs of aging. A treatment called Kybella, an injectable acid that destroys fat cells, can be used under the chin and jawline area; off-label uses that are popular with brides include pockets of fat under armpits. DiMeola said clients can achieve results in one to six months, and treatments must be spaced a month apart. Think of it like tailoring a dress — “you have to give it time.” The team suggests a minimum of a month out for any kind of treatment, and not trying anything new for at least two to four weeks before the wedding — even a new moisturizer or foundation — that could cause an unknown reaction. “Whether they’re starting on a new skincare routine or adding a few products here and there, it does take a good 12 weeks to see the best results with home-care products. It’s best to give it time,” DiMeola said. RETURN ON INVESTMENT Eyelash extensions are a popular for those wanting fuller, darker, longer lashes without adding mascara or falsies. They require a professional application process that takes between 90 minutes and two hours. With home care they last for weeks and will stand up to tears of joy or even a dip in the lake without sending black streaks running down your face. Keelan recommends getting a full set about two to three months before an event to make sure you’re comfortable with how they feel and look. Then, they can be touched up every two or three weeks —the last fill a few days before the wedding. Lash extensions are also great for a low-maintenance honeymoon. Cost is certainly a factor in elective and cosmetic treatments — it’s important to plan out a budget. Eyelash extensions can cost $100-$300 for the initial application, and $50 and up for a fill, depending on the provider and package.

BELTRAMI & CO. PHOTOGRAPHY

A single hydrafacial treatment costs on average $150-$300; chemical peels and exfoliating treatments can run you into the hundreds as well. Laser hair removal depends on the body part, but consider the results and the longevity — a single underarm waxing session might cost $25, and last three or four weeks; a full course of laser treatment for the area might cost $400, and last for years. “It’s like lifestyle prep and you can continue long after,” DiMeola said. Someone may get a facial or filler with a special event in mind, but become a regular client after they realize, “this is how I want to look and feel after the day.” WHO’S DOING IT? “I wish I was a little bit more preventative in my younger years with getting injections and Botox and whatnot,” Keelan said. “Most estheticians will tell you they’ve probably started on their journey in aesthetics because they’ve probably had problems with their skin. When I was a teenager, I didn’t know what I was doing. I’m like, I’ll just take this bottle of alcohol and that’ll get rid of my acne … and so it’s been a long journey. You try all these at-home remedies.” Services can benefit everyone, too. “We have a variety of male clients, and they’re coming for all different reasons,” DiMeola said. She said men often choose to treat fine lines around the eyes, enhance their jawline, or get facials or microneedling to improve skin tone and texture.

SAFETY FIRST DiMeola is the sole injector at Glow. She’s a licensed osteopathic physician who began her medical career in the U.S. Navy, where she worked as a senior flight surgeon and occupational medicine director for a large military training facility. She said having a physician in her role isn’t unique to Vermont though it is relatively unique to the industry, as there are other providers like nurses, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who can provide good and safe treatments. Other local providers include Radiance Medical Spa in Williston, with owner and leading physician Dr. Colleen Parker; and Lumina Med Spa, founded and owned by physician Dr. Nancy Carlson, with locations in South Burlington and Estero, Fla. “There’s a lot of fabulous providers, and as long as they’re well educated and keeping up on their education … then you’re probably in a good spot,” DiMeola said. DiMeola said the best compliment she received was from a client who she treated with filler and Botox. “When she went back to work, people asked her if she got a facial, or her hair done. … All people noticed was that she was more beautiful, more refreshed, more youthful looking.” This article is intended for informational purposes only. before the alter SOMETHING BORROWED, SOMETHING NEW BY TOMMY GARDNER

KAREN Nelson is getting married next year in her mother’s wedding gown. That’s such a simple thing, right? A simple alteration here, a more modern update there. Seamstresses do it all the time. Nelson’s dress has a story, though. It started in the early 1980s, and its sequined sequel is underway. >>

STYLE

Debbie Wells, the former owner of Sewly Yours at the top of Church Street in Burlington, make the alterations. “I want something that’s going to be more flattering for me, because I feel a little bit like a stocky Irish housewife,” Nelson said. “I want it to look nice and be flattering for my body type.”

COURTESY PHOTO

Nelson’s grandmother sewed all six of her daughters’ wedding dresses. One of those was for Nelson’s mother, who died last November after a short battle against cancer. “I’m not going to lie to you,” Nelson, 33, said. “That’s pretty much the worst thing you can go through in your life.” That moment was soon followed by the preamble to what she thinks will be the best day of her life. When her boyfriend, Josh Hokanson, proposed in January, there was no question as to what Karen was going to wear to her wedding. Her mother’s gown is illustrative of the late 1970s — puffy full-length sleeves and a collar that rises up with the neck, with embroidery work on the modestly plunging bodice and sleeves. To bring Betsy’s wedding into the 21st century, Nelson is having a Milton seamstress,

SEAMS TO BE… Wells, who now sews under the name Missallaneous (missallaneous.com), has been doing it for 30 years, and has a special spot for those who look for ways to honor an old garment. “I feel very honored to be trusted when people let me do this for them,” Wells said. “When someone chooses to do a family gown, it just takes it to another level.” Wedding dress sales may not have been as robust during the pandemic as before, but seamstresses and tailors have been kept afloat by used garments, as well as new ones purchased sight-unseen online. Judi Anderson, owner of the Sewing Basket in Barre and Essex, said some people who try to buy something new online run the risk of spending more on their alterations than they did on the actual gown or coat. Her advice: buy local or buy used, because there’s a good chance the seamstresses know each other and can ask them questions, maybe source some fabric. Wells is heeding that strategy, taking the puffy sleeves off of Nelson’s mother’s dress and using that unique four-decadeold fabric to make the dress fit Nelson. Pam Dewey, a seamstress at the Sewing Basket, said there are new twists in alterations during the pandemic. She said she has done embroidery on masks for weddings, such as a pair that read “Just” and “Married.” She said there have been a number of outdoorsy brides-tobe who want their gowns and their party’s garb to be fitted to go with hiking boots, as they hit the peaks for marital bliss. “ ‘Versatility,’ they tell me,” Dewey said. “ ‘I don’t know how far we have to hike up this mountain.’ ” ADAPTING TO CHANGE There’s still one more part of Nelson’s dress that has to be finished before she and Hokanson wed in early 2022. After her mother died, a mammogram found the same cancer in Nelson’s body. She is now having a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. “I’m just waiting until my final surgery is over to send my measurements in,” she said. Wells said this is not the first time altering or creating a dress for a woman’s body that isn’t available in an off-the-rack version. Once, for a woman who used a wheelchair, she designed a dress so the bride could rise from the chair and into a walker for her journey down the aisle. She’s worked with brides with diabetes who have to have their insulin pumps hidden within their gowns and a bride with scoliosis, who had undergone multiple surgeries to try and correct her crooked spine. Wells had the manufacturer send her the dress in pieces, and she used the bride-to-be as a unique mannequin to ensure a perfect fit. >>

REAL WEDDINGS

julie & mike SEPTEMBER 22, 2020 DUXBURY, VT

DOES LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT SOUND TOO CLICHÉ? Very well. Julie and Mike’s story — how they both fell in love on their first date, how they drove home that night in a blizzard as chunky snowflakes floated past, how they braved the pangs of a long-distance relationship — is a cliché. A sweet one, all the same.>> 54

BM_54,55_rw julie mike.qxp_Bridal Template 6/25/21 3:36 PM Page 3

“I looked at Julianne and in my mind’s eye, I saw her driving with me through all of the other snowstorms I was going to have to brave at night,” said Mike, and he couldn’t imagine braving them without her. Julie, too, knew they were “meant to be,” recalling how natural if felt to talk that first date and how she felt totally herself. The couple met in the summer of 2014, when Julie was visiting family in Vermont. Mike, a friend of the family, joined for dinner and the two immediately clicked. “I like to say he is a human with the personality of a golden retriever,” said Julie. After she returned to Virginia to finish school, they kept in touch, chatting nearly every day on the phone before their first date in 2015. Years later, when Mike proposed in the passenger drop-off zone at the Burlington International Airport, Julie said an enthusiastic yes, then boarded a plane to visit her family, beaming with a warm glow the entire flight. “That it was so unconventional is really perfect to us,” said Julie. “I remember sitting on the airplane and just thinking about our future and being completely over the moon.” The couple married Sept. 22, 2020. “Nobody in either of our families even knew we were getting married because we wanted it to be a surprise!” said Julie. They eloped at the Moose Meadow Lodge, where the couple read their own personal vows and an old tree stump decorated with candles and flowers served as the altar during the ceremony. The nature setting was especially important to the couple, as they both share a love of hiking and the outdoors. Everything else just seemed to fall into place. With a small wedding and no bridal party or gaggles of relatives, the couple kept planning simple and stress-free — a perk when planning a wedding during a pandemic.

And keeping everything local turned out to be the key. “It made us feel that much closer to our community here in central Vermont,” Julie added. The most important aspect of getting married wasn’t what kind of dress or flowers to choose, however. “It was the notion of beginning a life that was our own and starting traditions that were unique to us and to our lives in Vermont,” said Julie.

andrea & walter FEBRUARY 28, 2020 STOWE, VT

Andrea and Walter met skiing in New Hampshire and took the friends’ route for a few years before dating in 2018. Soon after Walter proposed, wedding planning got underway in earnest. Both knew they wanted a winter wedding — natch! — on snow. 56

Stowe was the logical, and easy, choice — a wonderland of white, a world-famous ski mountain, the perfect setting for a magical ceremony and reception. It all came full circle from that meeting on skis years before. “Everyone had an amazing day,” said Walter.
