FROM THE PRESIDENT

2018-2019: A Fantastic Year! D E A R A LU M N I , PA R E NT S , A N D F R I E N D S O F S A I N T P AT R I C K , THIS YEAR WAS THE YEAR OF LASALLIAN VOCATIONS marking the 300th Anniversary of Saint John Baptist de la Salle’s entry into eternal life and celebrates the impact of the mission he started. Together, Lasallians give thanks to our common heritage, renew our commitment to respond to the educational needs of today’s youth, and share our hope for the future of the mission. This year at Saint Patrick High School we celebrated our 158th year of helping the young men of our great city receive an excellent and practical education; one which forms them into quality men of tomorrow who are well-equipped to become the future leaders of our city, country and Church. The Founder reminds us “Do not forget to thank God for his many blessings.” We are blessed in so many ways at St. Pat’s. I want to thank our students, faculty, administration, parents, Board of Trustees and all of our Alumni and friends for their support, which contributed to all our successes this year—and there were many. Enrollment has been steady and strong for the past seven years at 630+ young men—102 of which are legacies meaning their fathers or grandfathers attended St. Pat’s. The Class of 2019 received in excess of $10M for college scholarships to great Universities around the country and two more seniors received Chick Evans Caddie Scholarships bringing the number of

Evans Scholars at Universities next year to 15, which leads the country. Quite an accomplishment! The Shamrock Green and Gold, held at Local 399 Banquet Hall, was a great success. The event raised over $400,000. Special congratulations to Phil Stefani ’68 on receiving the Shamrock Legacy Award which is presented to an alumnus who represents the values of Saint Patrick High School and has demonstrated an extraordinary, lifelong commitment to its tradition. I want to thank Patti Fabrizio and the Advancement team for all their hard work to make the event such an enjoyable evening. Also, special thanks to parent Janet Davies from ABC 7 Chicago for acting as emcee for the Gala. She was terrific! We celebrated our seniors at a Liturgy at the end of April and our School Chaplain, Fr. Dominic Clemente ’08, confirmed eight Shamrocks. Now that is living the mission! It was a great day to be a Shamrock! At our annual Stewardship Celebration proudly acknowledging our wonderful benefactors, we awarded the President’s Counsellor II Award to Jim Labuz, Sr. ’78 for his transformational generosity and commitment to our school. Jim and his wife, Gina, have raised six children with all four of their boys having graduated from the Home of the Shamrocks. Congratulations, Jim! Graduation on May 21st capped off the school year in outstanding fashion. Holy Name Cathedral is a majestic setting that appropriately speaks to the

religious development and formation of our graduates. It was a night filled with gratitude and positive spirit; a spectacular evening. On May 28th the Shamrocks celebrated the ribbon cutting ceremony at the new ReadDunning Park. The multi-sport synthetic turf athletic field, where St. Pat’s will begin play this August, will be managed by the Chicago Park District. Major League Baseball Hall-of-Famer Cal Ripken, Jr. and Chicago Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts were among the guests at the ceremony and donors for the project. This project was six years in the planning and will be such a great stadium to play our home games. Special thanks to Pat Levar ’95 for his persistence and expertise with the project! As you are probably aware, we announced the public phase of our $7.5M Capital Campaign at this year’s Green and Gold Gala. We have raised $5.8M from forty-four gifts so far. Please contact Vice President of Institutional Advancement, Jeff Ardito ’87, (Ext. 318) to learn more or get involved. I would like to thank the Board of Trustees for their time, talent, and treasure. Also, I want to thank the Executive Committee of the Board (Mick O’Rourke ’86, Greg Josefowicz ’70, Mary Pat Burns, and Mark Ellsworth ’80) for their leadership and passion for our mission. Finally, I would like to thank all of our generous benefactors. We need your support to make it work. Please know how honored I am to be President at the greatest high school in the country. St. John Baptist de la Salle, pray for us. Live, Jesus, in our hearts. Forever!

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

D E A R A L U M N I , P A R E N T S , A N D F R I E N D S O F S A I N T P AT R I C K , Every May, at our final Board Meeting of the year, I share a summary of what has been accomplished during the year from the principal’s perspective. I value this opportunity to celebrate all that we have accomplished not only this school year, but also over the past six years since launching the school’s first strategic plan. Simply put, Saint Patrick High School is a better school today than we have ever been—from curriculum, to faith formation, to facilities, to fundraising. We continue to live the mission our founder set 350 years ago of “providing an educational experience of the highest quality which enables young men to develop to their maximum potential as lifelong learners and assets to society and the Church.” In the area of curriculum, we have implemented new courses and

activities, developed a STEAM program, increased ACT scores, and supported teacher growth through professional development and graduate level education. Our students continue to grow in their faith formation— through a four-year retreat program, eucharistic minister training, and a record number of service hours and projects. The facilities have gone through numerous upgrades, internally and externally. Some examples include our STEAM lab, INCubator lab, Health & Wellness Center, and the ability for our football and baseball teams to play at state-of-the-art facilities at Triton College and Kerry Wood Cubs Field. Our donor participation is at all-time high as evidenced in our capital campaign and events such as the Green & Gold Gala, Shamrock Golf Outing, and Shamrock Sweepstakes. These are just a few of our countless accomplishments.

We will publish the year five results of our strategic plan efforts later this summer with more detail on progress with Curricular Development, Lasallian Mission and Catholic Identity, Facilities and Operations, as well as Finance and Institutional Advancement. So, what happens next? We must formulate the next strategic plan that incorporates the current challenges and opportunities that exist for Saint Patrick High School as well as other Catholic schools. This work, planning, and effort will take place beginning this summer and into next year. As another outstanding year of schooling ends, I want to thank the Saint Patrick community for its dedication and hard work. We do make a difference in the lives of our students, and through them I believe we are making the world a better place for everyone. God bless!

COVER STORY

Q & A with Jim Labuz, Sr. ’78 James R. Labuz Sr. ’78 graduated Saint Patrick High School in 1978 and went on to receive his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT) in 1983. Upon receiving his degree, Jim began his thirty plus years in the curtain wall industry and in 1996, he bought Mid-States Glass and Metal, a glass and glazing company. Jim and Gina have six children and all four of their sons (Jim ’02, Mark ’03, Charlie ’12 and Luke ’17) attended Saint Patrick. MidState Glass and Metal, a young company at the time, was a major contributor to the Vision 2000 project/expansion of Saint Patrick High School. In addition, as a member of the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Property, Plant and Equipment Committee, Jim has contributed to the INCubator Lab and STEAM Lab among other projects. Jim and his wife, Gina, are yearly sponsors of the Shamrock Green and Gold Gala and Shamrock Golf Outing. In May, Jim was awarded the President’s Counselor II Award, presented each year to someone who has demonstrated exceptional dedication, generosity, or service to the Lasallian educational mission as it is lived each day at St. Pat’s. We sat down with Jim and asked him about his lifelong love and affinity for Saint Patrick High School. When did your love for Saint Patrick High School begin? St. Pat’s has always been a special place for me and my family. Growing up only three blocks from the school, I had always dreamed of the day I would attend St. Pat’s like my two older brothers. Like many of today’s families, my mom and dad made great sacrifices to send their eight children through 12 years of Catholic School and their sacrifices were worthwhile. Once at St. Pat’s, I made lifelong friends. In my junior year I was joined by my youngest brother, Bill. We received a great education, a true sense of Brotherhood and made memories that will last a lifetime.

Past Honorees pictured with Labuz: Greg Josefowicz ’70; Brother Konrad Diebold, FSC; Brother David Galinski, FSC; Dr. Joseph G. Schmidt, AFSC

What did it mean to have all four of your boys attend Saint Patrick? How do you feel their experience prepared them for where they are now?

How did you feel when you were told you were going to be presented the Counsellor II Award at this year’s Stewardship Celebration?

I could not be more proud of my four sons. They made the most of what St. Pat’s had to offer. It was the environment at Belmont and Austin that allowed them to participate in a wide range of sports and extracurricular activities and still excel in the classroom. It was the positive reinforcement of faculty and coaches that helped each of them reach their fullest potential. It never gets old telling people that it is because of their Saint Patrick education that my sons attended some of the most prestigious universities in the country: MIT, University of Illinois, Notre Dame and Butler.

When Dr. Joe and Jeff Ardito ’87 (Vice President of Institutional Advancement) called to tell me that they wanted to honor me with the Counsellor II Award, I was very flattered and maybe a little overwhelmed. As I read through the list of past recipients, it read like a Who’s Who of Saint Patrick High School. To be listed with the likes of Dr. Joe, Brother Konrad (Diebold, FSC), Bill McManaman ’65, Lowell Stahl ’52 and the rest of this group is very humbling.

Why do you feel it’s important to stay involved with St. Pat’s? One of the things that amazes me about St. Pat’s are all the familiar faces I see around school. Unfortunately, we have lost a few friends along the way but they have been replaced by new faces. And it is because of these now recognizable faces that I have great hope for the future of Saint Patrick High School. The future leaders of St. Pat’s are being developed right before our eyes. With this, I believe it is all of our responsibility to share our stories, knowledge and service so that the next generation can keep the tradition of St. Pat’s alive.

What would you to say to current Shamrocks? I would say make the most of your time in High School. It goes way too fast. It is a special time in your life when you get to compete both on and off the field. You never know what you are capable of until you try. Saint Patrick High School is where great things happen so dream big!

Students in STEAM Program gain real-life experience

Four Shamrocks in their second year of the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Math) program started summer internships after visiting three companies this spring to learn more about their operation. The STEAM Advisory Board arranged for juniors Maximo Bunay, Trevor Hudson, Cristian Salas and Delano Walker to meet with executives at Mid-States Glass & Metal, Inc., Stanley Spring & Stamping Corporation and Model Options.

Board of Trustees member, Jim Labuz, Sr. ’78 and his wife Gina Labuz, President and Chief Executive Officer at Mid-States Glass & Metal, Inc., welcomed the Shamrocks and showed them the different window curtain systems the company installs. In addition, the group of students was able to see the machinery Mid-States uses to install windows. Maximo is interning with the company, recognized as a premier curtain wall erector in the Chicagoland area, this summer. Students met with Mike Lee, VP of Operations and a friend of Board of Trustees member Paul Benson ’79, at Stanley Spring & Stamping Corporation. Stanley’s has been a premier supplier of custom metal parts and springs for over 80 years. Mike is in charge of increasing the factory’s efficiency by instituting better manufacturing processes. As an intern, Delano is helping Mike update and complete new work flows to streamline

production, increase output and decrease layovers between shipments. At Model Options, an architectural design studio, the team of students was greeted by President Jack Grott, another friend of Benson’s. The models the company builds help close the deal for new developments around the world. Cristian and Trevor have an opportunity, as interns at Model Options, to use 3D printers, laser cutters and other plastic rendering materials to create stunning 3D models. The STEAM program at Saint Patrick High School strives to help students think deeply and be prepared to transform into future innovators, educators, researchers and leaders who can solve challenges our world faces today and in the future. There are currently 60 students enrolled in the program to begin the 2019-2020 school year. To learn more, please visit www.stpatrick.org/ academics/steam.

Another impressive final pitch night for students, alumni

On April 30, the 3rd Annual Final Pitch Night marked the completion of another year of Saint Patrick High School’s entrepreneurship program, INCubatoredu. Five student teams presented their business models for ideas, products, or services they created from scratch all year long to a theatre full of alumni, families, friends, faculty and staff. This year’s presentations included Univlink, a website/app that can be used by students, parents and Universities to simplify and enhance the college application process; Dry Ice, a prototype for a hockey bag that incorporates a mechanism to dry wet athletic equipment; SDS—Senior Driving Services, personalized transportation for senior citizens who may not drive and live in areas with limited public transportation; Sports Plug, a platform that unites sellers of used athletic equipment with potential buyers, and the winning team, City Wash and Detail.

City Wash and Detail is a company looking to cash in on the current trend of major companies providing perks for employees, including personal services, at their work location. Specifically, City Wash and Detail will provide car washes to employees during the workday, eliminating the need for waiting in lines on weekends or after work hours. The winning student team was: Daniel Bedon ’20, Tyler Ferraro ’20, Joey Thome ’20 and Jack Finnegan ’20. Their mentor was Joe Sartin ’89. Other mentors were: Frank Alvino ’79, Dave Bushnell, Matt Hansen ’08 and Jim Rohrlack ’89. This year’s Board of Advisors, who served as the panel of judges for the Final Pitch Night, were: Wayne Suerth ’63, Tom Johnson ’65, Dean Angelo, Sr. ’72, Anthony DeVito ’92, Scott Cruz ’95, Tom Brennan ’01, Kevin

Gillespie ’05, Mike O’Neill ’08 and Gino Bartucci. INCubatoredu is a program that offers students an authentic entrepreneurship experience. In the yearlong course, students have the opportunity to create and fully develop their own product or service with real alumni entrepreneurs and business experts serving as volunteer coaches and mentors. The coaches and mentors lead student teams in generating hypotheses about a business concept and testing those hypotheses, adapting, and continually learning and improving along the way. If you are interested in serving as a coach or mentor for next year’s INCubatoredu course, please contact Gary M. Santella ’72, Director of Alumni Relations & Planned Giving, at gsantella@stpatrick.org.

Theatre Department brings “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” to life for audiences of all ages The Theatre Department’s Spring Musical, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, was a colorful and lively retelling of the story of Joseph and his brothers from the Bible. Staged in a rundown village, the Narrator comes upon a group of individuals who have lost hope. Through storytelling, and pulling the villagers in to play each role, the Narrator and Joseph took audiences on a whirlwind through Canaan and Egypt. With a team of professional designers, the world of Joseph was brought to life through whimsical costumes and props, and the set boasted a rotating platform and exuberant colors. The orchestra was led by Band Director, Donnie Glowinski, and students from the SPHS Band program. Led by fantastic performances from seniors Xavier Resto (Joseph), Allison Maysonet (Narrator), and Chris Preston (Simeon and Potiphar), an all-star cast of freshmen through senior Shamrocks and actresses from high schools throughout the city and suburbs of Chicago, performed six incredible shows. With an additional performance in front of a packed house of excited elementary school students, this production was the show to see this year!

In addition to performing their smash hit to audiences at the Stahl Family Theatre last fall, the cast of We All Rise Above, was invited to perform downstate at the University of Illinois in Champaign, Urbana during the Illinois High School Theatre Festival in January. The cast was presented with a plaque and kind words about their powerful performances and incredible message of hope and understanding in the play by the Executive Director of the Festival, who felt personally moved by watching the production.

Presented in the style of Forum Theatre, the production centered around a bullied student going through his day dealing with those who bully him, those who support him, and those who do not. The cast presented scenes about bullying, then invited audience members to come onstage to play a role and attempt to change the situation and help the bullied student. Our audiences loved this, and it made the show one of our most thought-provoking plays to date!

Enriching the community… one mural at a time The school cafeteria was the beneficiary of two painted murals created by the Junior and Senior Art 2 class and the SPHS Art Club. Each year the Art 2 class works collaboratively to propose, design, and paint a mural to be installed in the school. Working this way in the classroom provides students new uses for their art and communication skills while also demonstrating to the larger school community the importance of art. This creation of a class mural culminates a year of drawing, painting and problem-solving. At the end of the year, students are ready to challenge their skills and creative talents in a public format. The community message within both murals centered on the food that has become a tradition at Saint Patrick and the corresponding sense of community attached. The Art 2 class created a Cookie Monster mural that greets diners from the courtyard. The Beef Day mural, created by the Art Club, is located by the food counter and celebrates student’s favorite Thursday lunch choice.

The full year art electives will be changing next year to single semester courses, but the Mural Assignment will continue to be offered in the advanced painting curriculum. The courses are changing to accommodate student’s busy schedules and allow more students to enroll in art courses. The SPHS Art Club meets weekly with Ms. Blatchley and is open to all students. This year students created works for the Student Art Shows, designed an Art Club shirt, participated in contests and painted the Beef Day Mural.

Faculty join Shamrocks on stage for Spring Jazz Concert Faculty and Staff musicians were invited to join the Jazz Band on stage for their Spring Concert. Band Director, Donnie Glowinski, was trying to show students they could still have music in their life without making it their career. Mr. David Craine, Mr. Tim Ebrom ’06, Mr. Jon Newman and Mr. Mark Wozniczka were among the faculty members who joined our Shamrocks on stage for a great show!

Saint Patrick joins Lasallian community to celebrate Founder’s Day

Saint Patrick High School joined the Lasallian community in celebration of Founder’s Day with an All-School Liturgy on Wednesday, May 15. Seven Christian Brothers, with over 400 years of service, were in attendance. Mass was presided over by Father Thomas J. Hurley, pastor of Old St. Patrick’s Church, assisted by School Chaplain and Pastor of Saint Edward Parish, Rev. Dominic Clemente ’08. Following the Liturgy, faculty and staff were honored for their 5, 15 and 25 years of service. Faculty and staff honored were: Eric Fleming (5 years), Rebecca McBride (5 years), Kimberly Miculinic (5 years), Thomas Christman ’01 (15 years), Peter Dougherty (15 years), Colleen McGovern (15 years), Thomas Gillespie (25 years) and Coach Michael Bailey (25 years). This year’s Distinguished Lasallian Educator Award was presented to Math Teacher Tim Ebrom ’06. The award honors an educator who exemplifies the ideals of Saint John Baptist de la Salle in the 21st century.

Shamrocks in RCIA Program receive Sacraments In the fall of 2015, the Religious Studies Department developed a Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) program consistent with the Archdiocese of Chicago that would reflect a student’s experience as a member of the Saint Patrick community when they realized a number of students had fallen behind their sacramental progression, particularly the Sacraments of Initiation. Last year, the department decided it wanted to incorporate the entire Saint Patrick community in the celebration. On Wednesday, April 24, the Shamrocks who spent the year in preparation received the

Sacrament of Confirmation and Sacrament of the Eucharist, administered by Rev. Dominic Clemente ’08, at an All-School Liturgy in front of the entire school community. “I strongly believe that those who have been intimated fully into the Church through the RCIA program speaks to the power of Catholic Schools to touch hearts,” said Saint Patrick Campus Minister, Rich Raho, “It also influences young adults on their faith journey.” The students who participated in the 2018-2019 RCIA Program Sacrament of Confirmation were:

Giovanni Capifali ’19* Joseph Oesterreich ’19 Maximo Bunay ’20 Nazar Fedorovych ’21* Ethan Morrelly ’21* Joshua Torres ’21 Christian Mammoser ’22 Fidel Sanchez ’22 *Also received the Sacrament of Eucharist Interested students or parents who would like to request information on behalf of their sons for the upcoming 2019-20 school year should contact Dan Eberle, Religious Studies Department Chair, at deberle@stpatrick.org.

In Head Coach Mike Bailey’s 25th season, the Shamrocks defeated Grayslake Central 63-51 at home to win their first Regional Championship since 2016 (and 11th since he took over at the helm) before losing to topranked St. Viator in the Sectional Semi-Finals. Shamrock basketball went 20-10 (18-10, 5-4 in the regular season) with East Suburban Catholic Conference (ESCC) wins over Marian Central, Nazareth, Notre Dame, Marist and Joliet Catholic. The win over Notre Dame came after senior Austin Freeman hit two free throws in front of a packed house on Kurland Court with 3.4 seconds left in the game.

Saint Patrick wrestling won its 4th IHSA Regional Championship in 5 years and 6th in program history. Nine Shamrocks took 1st place in their weight class and five finished in 2nd. All 14 wrestlers advanced to Sectionals and four went on to compete in the State Tournament.

Freeman and junior Dominic Galati were named ESCC All-Conference and junior Joe Fanning received an Honorable Mention. The sophomore team finished 1st in the ESCC going 20-5 and 9-0 in conference play while the freshmen finished 2nd (19-7, 7-2).

Sean Conway ’22 (106 lbs), Bradley Ritter ’19 (120 lbs), Delano Walker ’20 (126 lbs) and Tom Liesz ’19 (195 lbs) represented Saint Patrick at the State Wrestling Tournament.

With three starters returning to the varsity team and the success at the lower levels, Shamrock basketball is poised for another great season in the fall.

For the first time since 1985, and only the second in program history, Shamrock Wrestling had two State Placewinners in the same year. Conway took 3rd becoming the first freshman to place at the State Wrestling Tournament in program history. Conway also broke the record of most Varsity wins in a season by a freshman with 40. Ritter took 4th in State and is now a two-time State Qualifier with an 80-25 career record. The swim team finished the season in 3rd place out of 12 teams at the IHSA Sectional Championship Meet at Fenwick High School. Although no one advanced to the State Finals, Shamrocks medaled in all Swimming events. Senior Robert Hernandez, junior Lance Minn and sophomores Nazar Fedorovych and Sergio Mendieta swam the 200 medley relay in 1:42:45 finishing in 3rd place.

Shamrock bowling finished the season as Chicago Catholic League (CCL), Regional and Sectional Champions for the first time in the program’s history. Coach Dougherty, who completed his final season as Head Coach, sent a team or individual to the IHSA State Finals nine consecutive seasons (2007-2015) and 11 times overall, including the past two seasons (2018, 2019). No other school in Chicago, public or private, has sent more teams to state since the 2006-2007 season. Dave Habetler will take over as the new head coach. Habetler, who was an assistant coach for the Shamrocks this season, and his family have owned and operated Habetler Bowl in the Jefferson Park neighborhood for over 50 years. Habetler will inherit a team that finished 17th in the state. Junior Josh Baumstark finished 38th in the state and freshmen Anthony Andrade finished 64th. In addition, senior Brendan Day, Baumstark and Habetler’s son, freshman Bobby Habetler, were named CCL All-Conference. With a program that included 10 freshmen this year, who are all expected to return, Shamrock Bowling will undoubtedly continue to compete at the highest level for years to come.

The Saint Patrick baseball team won backto-back Regional Championships for the first time in school history and its 5th all-time. The Shamrocks (20-17) defeated Timothy Christian in the Regional Final at Kerry Wood Cubs Field before suffering a heartbreaking loss in the Sectional Semi-Finals to eventual State Champions Montini Catholic.

The Saint Patrick volleyball team won their eighth Regional Championship in a row (and 14th in the last 15 years). The JV squad had a strong season led by two players new to the sport. Sophomores Brendan Borner and Eddie Cafferkey previously played other sports before trying out for the tennis team but it didn’t take long for the coaches to notice their talent. In one of their most exciting finishes, the doubles partners were able to pull off a victory against Maine East in a match that went into a tiebreaker overtime game after a grueling third set.

Fifteen student-athletes committed to play at the collegiate level and were honored with their families in the winter and spring. The Shamrocks, representing six different sports, will continue their academic and athletic careers at NCAA Division I, II and III schools in the fall. Saint Patrick assistant varsity basketball coach Dominic Cannon was inducted in the Career Coaches Category of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Hall of Fame this past May. Cannon, who is entering his tenth year coaching for the Shamrocks, has also coached at Palatine, Prospect and York. A longtime Prospect teacher, Cannon led the Knights to a regional title and 18-11 record in his second year as head coach in 2001. As the interim head coach at York in 2010-11, Cannon had a 19-8 record. The IBCA’s Career Coaches Category was established five years ago to recognize coaches who may have some head coaching experience but have predominately made their mark as an assistant coach at the varsity level. “One of the reasons we’ve done so well is because of Dominic’s dedication to coaching and his willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done,” says Hall of Fame Head Basketball Coach Mike Bailey. “No job is too big or too small for him. He’s had a major impact on our basketball program, especially our players.” Coach Cannon was honored prior to the Shamrock’s last regular season home game along with the team’s four seniors.

Shamrock Baseball honors those who serve with Appreciation Days This past season the Saint Patrick varsity baseball team honored the men and women who serve, including Military Personnel, Law Enforcement Officials and Teachers, by organizing service projects and honoring these individuals at several home games. Prior to the game vs. Notre Dame College Prep, both schools collected items to be shipped to soldiers overseas as part of Military Appreciation Day. The two teams took a photo on the field as part of a pregame ceremony honoring Military Personnel in attendance for the game. The Shamrocks raised funds for the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation’s “Get Behind the Vest” program by selling “copcakes” (cupcakes decorated with a police officer star) during lunch periods for Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. All law enforcement personnel, including family members, alumni and friends of the program, were invited on the field prior to the game vs. Saint Viator for the singing of the national anthem and a group photo. Teacher Appreciation Day took place on May 7 as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. Saint Patrick teachers were invited on the field prior to the game and Mr. Wojnar, who retired this year after 14 years at St. Pat’s, threw out the first pitch.

Coach Dan Eberle inducted into ESCC Hall of Fame Saint Patrick Religious Studies Department Chair and Coach Dan Eberle, with over 42 years coaching experience, including six years (2006-2011) as the Shamrock’s Head Baseball Coach, was inducted into the East Suburban Catholic Conference (ESCC) Hall of Fame. Coach Eberle, who led the 2006 team to an IHSA state runner up finish, has also coached at Holy Cross High School (1979-2004) where he led their baseball team to two Regional Championships and served as Athletic Director (1979-2004), and St. Joseph High School (2005). The festivities began with an outdoor “5 O’Clock Somewhere Party” at Iron Horse Ale House in Norwood Park on Friday, June 7th. The party was headlined by the Southern Drawl Band and included Margaritaville specialty drinks, food donated by Iron Horse, raffles and games. The Fins Up Softball Tournament and Tailgate Party was the following day at Merrimac Park. For the fourth consecutive year, the net proceeds raised from Fins Up events benefit the Lt. John M. Leonard Scholarship Fund at Saint Patrick High School. With the proceeds from this year’s events, funding for the Scholarship has now topped $100,000 and thus qualifies as a fully-funded Endowment. The Lt. John M. Leonard Scholarship will provide funds to deserving students who otherwise could not afford to attend St. Pat’s. Lt. John M. Leonard ’75 was a dedicated family man, friend and Chicago firefighter. After fighting lung cancer valiantly, John succumbed to the disease on Jan. 19, 2015. Phil Stefani ’68 honored at 51st Annual Shamrock Green & Gold Gala Saint Patrick High School honored one of Chicago’s best-known restaurateurs, Phil Stefani ’68, with its Saint Patrick Legacy Award. The award, given to an alumnus who represents the values of Saint Patrick High School and has demonstrated an extraordinary, lifelong commitment to its tradition, is one of the school’s highest honors. “I am honored to receive the Saint Patrick Legacy Award from an institution so steeped in tradition,” Stefani said. “Saint Patrick High School develops leaders in society by maintaining an unwavering commitment to civic responsibility, strong personal values and educational excellence. I am grateful, not only for the recognition, but to be a part of the Shamrock family.” Phil Stefani Signature Restaurants began in 1980 with the opening of Stefani’s on Fullerton Avenue and over the past thirty-eight years, its twelve restaurants have become a staple of the Chicago restaurant scene, building a loyal following of locals, celebrities, conventioneers, and politicians. A renowned philanthropist, Stefani formed The Stefani Children’s Charities in 1998 and to date, has distributed over $3,000,000 to local children’s charities including: Children’s Memorial, After School Matters, Misericordia, Maryville Academy, Mercy Boys Home and Cystic Fibrosis. “Phil embodies what it means to be a Shamrock in that he has made a significant impact on the people of the city of Chicago, not only through his career, but with his generosity to causes he cares deeply about,” said Dr. Joseph G. S H A M R O C K N AT I O N , I sure hope this edition of our magazine finds you and your family enjoying the summer season with family and friends. This time of year is particularly exciting as we begin another school year filled with so much anticipation. Our school continues to flourish with our academic and extracurricular programs centered around serving our young men in the Lasallian charism while preparing them for college and other life pursuits.

To be exact, we are beginning our 159th school year as we remain the oldest allmale Catholic high school in Chicago. We are thrilled to welcome our students back and look to a very rewarding year in so many ways. We are fortunate to remain very relevant and needed on the northwest side of Chicago despite the many economic challenges that private education faces. The generosity of our benefactors combined with the dedication of our faculty/

administration/staff enable our school to meet the demands of a 21st century education. Our young men continue to be taught with the values and teachings of the Christian Brothers while being formed, as always, to continue to become positive contributors to the world. Please enjoy the remainder of summer and if you haven’t visited the Home of the Shamrocks in a while please consider doing so. If you would like to schedule a visit, please call me at 773-282-9563 and I would be more than happy to take you around the campus. Shamrock Pride,

The Kuhns are the 33rd recipients of the prestigious award.

St. John Baptist De La Salle Society allows donors to “sponsor” a Shamrock The St. John Baptist De La Salle Society embodies the foundation of donor support for our Lasallian mission as we remain dedicated to assisting students and their families with financial aid. Donors at this level ($1,500 or more per year) are matched with a student receiving tuition assistance allowing them the opportunity to support the mission of the Christian Brothers by transforming the life of a Shamrock. Each member of the St. John Baptist De La Salle Society receives correspondence from their sponsored student throughout the school year and an invitation to attend the Benefactors Luncheon in April. This program has been extremely rewarding for the nearly 200 donors who participated in the 2018-19 school year, and we invite you to become a part of this special group!
