FROM THE PRESIDENT

2019-2020: 159th Year!

Saturday, March 7, 2020, and we are proud to announce that Greg Josefowicz’70 will be receiving the Shamrock Legacy Award, which is presented to an alumnus who represents the values of Saint Patrick High School and has demonstrated an extraordinary, lifelong commitment to its tradition. Congratulations Greg!

D E A R A L U M N I , P A R E N T S , A N D F R I E N D S O F S A I N T P AT R I C K ,

THIS YEAR MARKS THE 159TH YEAR and we continue to celebrate our strong vibrant community, healthy enrollment, vast network of alumni and, especially, the young men who attend our institution. Last year our students earned college scholarship offers at great Universities across the country, including a record number 16 Evans Scholars, which proudly leads the nation. There are many exciting things happening in my 53rd year at Saint Patrick including the continued growth of our STEAM program and INCubatoredu Entrepreneurship program. We’re proud to offer more opportunities to earn college credits and real-life experience this year through new course offerings and partnerships with Lewis University and the Shedd Aquarium. In addition, our student-athletes continue to compete at state-of-the-art facilities including Triton College, Kerry Wood Cubs Field and the new Read-Dunning Park. We are currently making substantial progress toward our $7.5 M Capital

Campaign to raise funds for our endowment and the STEAM program: both will help guarantee our sustainability for future generations. We have raised $5.9M to date and will reach our campaign goal through the public phase which was announced at last year’s Green & Gold Gala thanks to our wonderful benefactors!

As I proudly serve in my 53rd year at this great institution, I would like to share the below from a letter written by a current family as to why they chose St. Pat’s:

“ The school has an incredibly strong heritage plus it is always evolving. We really like that the school has something for everyone—arts, athletics, technology, different levels of programs for different

We enjoyed two successful alumni reunions (classes of ’59 and ’69) held at school in September. Attendees at both reunions had an opportunity to share memories and renew old friendships. The response from both classes was very positive - many commenting on what a fantastic evening they enjoyed with their classmates, and the camaraderie they shared recalling the good times at Austin and Belmont.

I am happy to report that the school year is off to a terrific start thanks in large part to the outstanding work done by our faculty, staff, and administration. The STEAM program continues to grow with 60 students enrolled in the program for the 2019-2020 school year and the INCubatoredu Entrepreneurship Program is now entering its fourth year. Four students involved in the STEAM program completed

internships in their interest fields during the summer of 2019. We are excited about our new course offerings in Forensic Science, Journalism, Entrepreneurship & Small Business, and Digital Citizenship; but even more so our continued growth in college credit opportunities. Our newest Lasallian partnership, Lewis University, provides an opportunity for students to take courses in both Aerodynamics and Computer Science bringing our total to 15 college courses and 47 possible credits.

Twenty-one Illinois State Scholars Named The following 21 seniors from this year’s graduating class have been recognized as Illinois State Scholars:

Simply put, Saint Patrick High School is a better school today than we have ever been—from curriculum, to faith formation, to facilities, to fundraising. We continue to live the mission our founder set 350 years ago of “providing an educational experience of the highest quality which enables young men to develop to their maximum potential as lifelong learners and assets to society and the Church.”

The State Scholar Program publicly and personally identifies graduating high school seniors who possess superior academic potential. Students from nearly every high school in Illinois compete in the program. The Illinois State Scholar designation is awarded to high school seniors based on ACT or SAT test scores, class rank, class size and unweighted Grade Point Average.

In an effort to continue meeting the educational and financial needs of today’s students and families, including annual tuition and other costs exceeding $12,700 per year, St. Pat’s launched the public phase of MORE LIKE YOU: Building a Stronger Future—the Campaign for Saint Patrick High School last March. The $7.5 million campaign will fund two critical areas: Increasing our Endowment to generate annual income which is capable of funding substantial scholarships for deserving students year after year ($5.5 million) Enhancing our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) facilities ($2 million) Please give serious consideration to making a meaningful investment in Saint Patrick High School so that it may continue to graduate young men who are MORE LIKE YOU. Entrepreneurship students take business to next level

Mr. Paul Best, Saint Patrick High School’s new INCubatoredu teacher for the 2019-2020 school year, has been part of the Entrepreneurship program since its second year. He was exposed to it at Lake Forest High School, serving for 5 years as a coach and mentor, and served as a coach at Glenbrook South High School prior to teaching a few units at St. Pat’s last year. Mr. Best shared that, in his experience, the program is good for students who are motivated and self-driven. “It’s about learning,” he said. “That’s the goal. Students in the program work in small groups with coaches and mentors to solve problems that happen to be in a business environment.”

According to the 2019 Boeing Pilot & Technician Outlook, an expected demand of nearly 2.5 million personnel including pilots, maintenance technicians and cabin crew over the next 20 years will stem from a mix of fleet growth, retirements and attrition. In an effort to prepare its students to help meet the demands of the aviation industry, Saint Patrick High School partnered with fellow Lasallian school, Lewis University, to offer an Aerodynamics course beginning in the 2019-2020 school year. The course, being taught by Lewis University professor, Steve Daudelin, is offered during regular school hours at Saint Patrick and provides students an opportunity to earn three hours of college credit. The course takes advantage of Lewis University’s leadership in education in the aviation industry by exposing students to the foundational and fundamental knowledge sets pertaining to aerodynamics. Daudelin, a licensed pilot, is teaching the concepts of lift, drag, thrust, performance, stability and control and high speed flight so that students will have

a better understanding of basic aerodynamic principles which will further their knowledge in the flight environment. “The class is adapted from an online course and is a college-level course and I treat it that way,” Daudelin says. “I tell students, like with most things in life, they will get out of it what they put into it.” One student, in particular, who is getting a lot out of the course is junior Dominic Del Boccio. Del Boccio, who plans to pursue a degree in Aviation upon graduation from Saint Patrick, says he was very excited when the school decided to offer the course. “I find it fascinating all that an airplane is capable of doing,” he said. “It’s amazing to me. My goal is to someday have my own plane and fly all over the world.” To learn more about the partnership with Lewis University in addition to other college credit opportunities at Saint Patrick, contact Christopher Perez ’91, Director of Curriculum and International Studies Program, at 773.282.8844, ext. 228 or cperez@stpatrick.org.

Mr. Best feels if there’s one business class a student chooses to enroll in, it should be Entrepreneurship. “Students are exposed to everything—HR, Accounting, Marketing, Sales, Operations and Customer Service,” he said. “They wear all those hats.” Last year’s winning team, City Wash & Detail (Daniel Bedon ’20, Tyler Ferraro ’20, Joey Thome ’20 and new member, Jake Bednarek ’20), a company that provides car washes to employees on-site during their work day, is gaining valuable experience in all of the above by exploring their test market in their second year in the program. The team is working together to execute their business plan operationally including determining the necessary steps, processes, quality, testing materials and training it will take to be successful. They created a GoFundMe page to raise money to buy supplies and cover the costs of starting their business, which they hope will be in place by this spring. For more information about becoming a coach or mentor for the INCubatoredu Entrepreneurship program at Saint Patrick, please contact Gary Santella, JD ’72, Director of Alumni Relations & Planned Giving, at 773.282.8844, ext. 224 or gsantella@stpatrick.org. Saint Patrick receives relic of Saint John Baptist de La Salle

Resource Program supports students in Beatified Blessed Brother Miller’s Name Blessed Brother James Miller, FSC became the first De La Salle Christian Brother from the United States to be beatified on Saturday, December 7, 2019. Brother James was only 37 years old when he was shot and killed outside of the school where he taught English, Religion and Guatemalan Art in Guatemala. Pope Francis recognized that Brother James died as a martyr in November 2018 as it was suspected he was killed for protecting young students from being forced into the military.

In honor of the 300-year anniversary of the death of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the Founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, Saint Patrick High School received one of his relics in September. To celebrate the receiving of the first class relic, a fragment of his bone, the entire school participated in a procession of the relic followed by a prayer service. Having the first class relic of Saint John Baptist de La Salle was a gift to the faculty, staff and students of Saint Patrick as the community celebrated the 300-year anniversary of our Founder’s death. Throughout the week, the school community honored the life and legacy of Saint John Baptist de La Salle in a special way by remembering his life of faith, his dedication to teaching, especially his teaching to the poor, and his founding of the Christian Brothers.

In addition to teaching, Brother James, who was born and raised in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, responded to the needs of his students in Guatemala by establishing a program to teach them leadership and job skills that would prepare them for life. In his memory, Saint Patrick High School offers a comprehensive college preparatory program that strives to support students with diverse academic needs. The Brother James Miller Learning Resource Program is designed for diverse learners who require additional academic

support and interventions inside and outside the classroom. Through the Miller Program, students maximize their potential as learners and become assets to society and the Church. Brother David Galinski, FSC, who is entering his 50th year at Saint Patrick, says Brother James had a “real knack” for working with kids who needed extra help. “It would be very special to him. It’s very appropriate and a real honor,” Brother David said. “He would be most happy knowing a program in his name is helping our students.” There are three components of the Miller Learning Resource Program: Phoenix College Preparatory Coursework, Academic Resource Period and Support with Learning and Behavior Specialists (LBS1). of Curriculum in 1991, a role I served in for 17 years. When Charlie Schmidt retired, I became the Assistant Principal, my current role. I’ve always taught a math class except one year. That was not a good year for me because I didn’t feel like I knew any of the students. I’ve also served as the Junior Class Moderator and moderator for the National Honor Society and various clubs. What has helped you stay at Saint Patrick all these years? How have things changed and how have they stayed the same?

Q & A with Jeff Troxell Assistant Principal Jeff Troxell ’72 has served Saint Patrick High School for 44 years. He has two sons who graduated from Saint Patrick—Chris ’10, who went on to obtain a Math degree from Lewis University, and Kevin ’14, who earned his English degree from North Central College and is preparing to go to China to teach English for one year. He also has a daughter, Jillian, born on Christmas Day, who finishes college at ISU in Nursing this May. He has been married to MaryAnn, a Madonna girl, for over 30 years. In addition, “Trox,” as he’s lovingly called, has two brothers who are alumni—Jerry ’79 and Jim ’82 and five sisters that graduated from Resurrection College Prep High School. He attended Christian Brothers University in Memphis where he earned his Bachelor’s in Mathematics and obtained his M.S.Ed and Ed.S in Educational Administration from Northern Illinois University. Tell us about your 48 years as a student, faculty/staff member and administrator at Saint Patrick and the many roles you’ve served in. I was a student from 1968-1972. Dr. Joe was in his second year teaching at St. Pat’s when I was a freshman and Brother David came my senior year. I returned as a full-time math teacher in 1976. I was a wrestling coach for 7 years and coached football at all levels for 15 years through 1991. After my 10th year I became Math Department Chair for 7 years and was appointed the Director

My positions and roles changing has always been a good challenge for me. I was always doing something new; that kept me fresh. I think always teaching a class has kept me grounded. I became a teacher to work with kids. I have sometimes seen people getting wrapped up in a new position that took them away from working with kids—not a bad thing but I didn’t want that to happen to me. When you talk about change, the kids are the same although they do have more distractions. It’s nice that our parents trust us and support us as a school with our decisions and what we’re doing. I’ve found that to always be true. When Dr. Joe says, “We’ve got the best kids and the best parents around,” it’s very true.

“ Part of that is our identity; sure, we’ve been around for 159 years but that’s not something that just happens. We work at making kids feel good about themselves and help them believe they have something positive to offer.” What are some of the highlights of your career at Saint Patrick? My two sons graduating from Saint Patrick is #1. They’re completely different but they both developed into young men here. I tell people on tours anyone can find a home here because I’ve witnessed it with my sons. They got involved, they found something to do and they developed friendships that will stay with them for life. In addition to my sons graduating from Saint Patrick, another highlight for me has been

teaching a number of my classmate’s sons and always having that tie back to my class. Now I am teaching sons of some the guys I’ve taught which is also kind of neat because that relationship is there. I’m very active with my class from 1972. My graduating class was 440. Of the 380 left or so, I still keep in touch with approximately 150 of them. I send out a news blast a number of times per year about what’s going on at school in an effort to keep our class together. I call them “my ’72 brothers.” I get a kick out of the guys I see who were part of my time here—Dr. Joe, Larry Scannell, Brother David, and some of the retired lay men and women and Brothers who are still around. I’m also proud of the guys I’ve taught who go on to become math teachers. I would like to believe that some of my passion rubbed off on them. I’ve gone through the Lasallian Leadership Institute (LLI). On a personal level, it helped me discover and build more commitment to the students and my colleagues in terms of the mission and direction of the school. That was important to me. What do you think makes Saint Patrick special and still relevant after 158 years? Saint Patrick is more responsive to the needs of the universal population than many other schools. In certain words, we call it being a comprehensive high school. We take the very academically talented, as well as students who struggle, but I think it’s even more than that. I think the diversity reflects Chicago. It’s almost identical; it mirrors it. The spiritual role of the school is a priority. Of course we want our students to be prepared for the future and get into college but as some of the Brothers say, “We’re here for the salvation of their souls first.” St. Pat’s did good by me and it did good by my boys. If you take advantage of the opportunities SPHS has to offer, it could be a good experience for a lot of different people. There’s no other place like St. Pat’s in terms of Brotherhood. Grads don’t come back to other schools like they do at St. Pat’s. Part of that is our identity; sure, we’ve been around for 159 years but that’s not something that just happens. We work at making kids feel good about themselves and help them believe they have something positive to offer. There’s a need for us on the Northwest Side of Chicago. The investment for our families will be realized many times over.

STEAM students celebrate summer internships

Students create artwork inspired by field trip to The Field Museum In November, the Drawing and 3D Design classes went to The Field Museum for a day of experiential learning. At the museum, students investigated fossils, masks, animals, and plants and then drew objects that captured their attention. Back in the art studio, students further developed individual studies to construct a single, developed composition.

In early October, STEAM students and their families, along with prospective families, were invited to celebrate the program and its success in its first three years. It was an evening full of STEAM-related activities and presentations. Each of the four seniors who participated in internships last summer as part of the program’s requirements gave a presentation including background about the company they interned for and detailing their experience. Afterward, each of the mentors talked about what it was like having a Shamrock intern with their company. “Overall, it was a positive experience for both the mentors and mentees,” said STEAM Internship Coordinator, Karyn Burkholder. “Our students were able to gain insight into possible future careers

and the direction they may like to take. Our mentors said they gained even more insight into how they can shape their internship program for next year.” Students (pictured with their mentors) and companies Saint Patrick High School partnered with for the inaugural year of the internship program were: Maximo Bunay ’20 (Mid-States Glass & Metal), Delano Walker ’20 (Stanley Spring & Stamping Corporation) and Trevor Hudson ’20 and Cristian Salas ’20 (Model Options). Saint Patrick looks forward to partnering with additional companies in the future to offer even more internship opportunities to its students as part of the STEAM program. If you or your company are interested in learning more, please contact Karyn Burkholder at kburkholder@stpatrick.org.

Capstone Project next step in STEAM program The next step in the STEAM program will be a Capstone Project for students in their senior year—and fourth in the program. The project will be all-encompassing encouraging students to work together on a larger problem using their collective strengths and resources. The idea is for students to look at the worldwide plastic recycling issues and determine how we can become more

sustainable and is expected to last through several cohorts of students starting with the Class of 2022. If you have any resources you feel may be valuable to our students on this project, please contact Chas Martin at cmartin@ stpatrick.org or Karyn Burkholder or kburkholder@stpatrick.org.

Students in the Drawing class created a graphite and/or colored pencil artwork. Favorite exhibits were SUE the T. Rex and the amazing collection of taxidermied animals, primarily from Carl Akeley the museum’s Chief Taxidermist. The 3D Design class had the design challenge of transforming their flat 2D drawings into unique 3D forms. After a series of drawing exercises, students constructed forms using newspaper and cardboard, and then completed them with plaster, paint, twigs and feathers. This exciting process was fun to observe and generated great results. The collection, grand display spaces, and variety of artifacts made the Field Museum a favorite place for our Shamrocks to visit and explore.

Audiences of all ages enjoy The Neverending Story The Saint Patrick Theatre Department’s fall production, The Neverending Story, took the stage in October. Starring sophomore Ryan Bender as Bastian and junior Eduardo Cortez as Atreyu, this production follows the award-winning Fall Play from 2018, We All Rise Above. Celebrating the power of storytelling, the cast and crew reimagined the powerhouse German novel of The Neverending Story with masks and puppets, superb and heartwarming acting, and the theatre department’s trademark stage combat. The elementary school audience was floored by the staging and magical design elements while adult audience members during weekend performances were reminded of the 1984 movie version and astonished by the student’s work. The cast was rounded out by junior Robert Rojas as the luck-dragon, Falkor, who turned out a comedic performance, as well as senior Lucas Richard who played Artax the Horse. Fans of the film will remember the touching death of Artax and Lucas’ portrayal left audiences speechless. The cast was also joined by actors from Trinity High School as well as a large ensemble of new actors to the theatre department. Director of Theatre, Geoffrey Arndt, said this was one of his favorite productions to direct at St. Pat’s adding, “It was certainly an incredible company of students to create the magic that we do best at the school.”

Saint Patrick Men’s Choir performs Christmas Lessons & Carols

Saint Patrick Theatre Director wins prestigious directing award This past August, Saint Patrick High School Theatre Director, Geoffrey Arndt, was awarded the prestigious Charles Nelson Reilly Prize in Directing in the theatre/music theater division for the school’s production of Dracula in October, 2013. Arndt was also nominated for the 2016 summer musical, Into the Woods, and was selected from applications submitted by directors across the United States. The American Prize, founded in 2009, is the nation’s most comprehensive series of non-profit competitions in the performing arts designed to recognize and reward the best performing artists, ensembles and composers in the United States.

This year the Saint Patrick High School Choir once again joined with the Trinity High School Choir to present a new Christmas show—Lessons and Carols. Lessons and Carols is a Christmas time tradition that dates back to the late 19th century. The program follows the story of salvation, from our fall through to our mission to preach the good news of Jesus Christ. Through a combination of scriptural readings, meditative prayers, Christmas Carols and other songs, the audience is able to focus on the salvation story, and reflect on its meaning to their life. If you were unable to attend the Choral Concert in December, you can experience the school’s presentation of Lessons and Carols on the Saint Patrick High School Music Department YouTube Channel.

Mr. Arndt has served as a teacher and Director of Theatre for eleven years. He also runs the Saint Patrick Summer Theatre Company that supports students, community members, and professional actors through workshops, intensives, classes, and a summer musical. He’s directed over forty productions in community and educational settings and recently received his Master of Fine Arts in Directing through the University of Idaho. COMPETING IN THE LONGEST SEASON IN SAINT PATRICK FOOTBALL HISTORY, the

Shamrocks advanced to the quarterfinals of the Chicago Prep Bowl, with wins over Carmel and Marian Catholic. With a 5-7 overall record, the team was Co-Division (Purple) Champions of the combined ESCC-CCL Conference, and Head Coach Adam Guerra received Coach of the Year for the division. Senior running back Eric Wozny, Jr. rushed for 1,151 yards and 15 touchdowns, earning Offensive MVP for the division, and senior linebacker Vince Waters, who ended the season with over 120 tackles, was named Defensive MVP. In addition to Wozny and

Waters, five other Shamrocks were named All-Conference: Kwame Achampong ’20 (DL), AJ Fitzpatrick ’20 (WR), Vic Matkowski ’20 (WR), Carl Reina ’20 (DL) and Alex Goworowski ’22 (LB).

Achampong commits to play football at Division I Georgetown University

As many as nine senior Shamrocks will continue their football careers at the collegiate level with opportunities from schools including Beloit College, Butler University, Colby College, Dartmouth College, Eastern Illinois, Georgetown University, Minnesota State, Missouri Southern, Northern State, Robert Morris University, Truman State, University of Dayton, University of Indianapolis, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Winona State.

On Wednesday, December 18, National Signing Day, senior Kwame Achampong committed to continue his academic and athletic career at Georgetown University. He said he made the decision after his official visit because of how much it reminded him of Saint Patrick High School. “The Brotherhood was there,” Achampong said. “I watched the way the coaches and players interacted and the way they were genuinely there for each other and it was just like being at St. Pat’s.” The 6’5, 230 lb. All-Conference Defensive End, who received academic and athletic scholarships to attend Georgetown and plans to major in Business, said the coaches also made him feel like he was part of their plan and would be given the opportunity to make an immediate impact, something he feels four years of Shamrock football, his teammates and Head Coach Adam Guerra, have prepared him to do. “My teammates at St. Pat’s are my brothers,” Kwame shared after the Signing Ceremony attended by the Junior Varsity and Varsity football teams. “I will be there for every one of them.” As for Coach Guerra he said, “Without him, I would not be in the position I am right now. He turned me into a man.”

“This is life-changing for Kwame and his family,” Guerra said. “His parents worked hard to put him through Catholic grade school. When it came time to decide where to go to high school, everyone told them a Catholic education at St. Pat’s was the best investment in his future. They listened and I couldn’t be happier to see their hard work pay off and Kwame’s dream come true.” Achampong, a two-sport athlete who played Shamrock basketball for three years, says “Choosing to attend St. Pat’s was the best decision I ever made.”

D E A R S H A M R O C K N AT I O N , Recently, I had lunch with an alumnus who was reflecting on his time at St. Pat’s. He smiled and said that they were some of the best times of his life. He repeatedly offered that he wonders what his life would have been like if he didn’t attend St. Pat’s and that when he talks with his classmates, they have often commented the very same thing. The consensus was that their lives would not have been so successful, productive, and enriched.

school, high school and college. Yet, the result of having been educated in the spirit of faith, service, and community with a focus on values and morals enhances a person’s life. Our educational mission enriches the whole person and just doesn’t offer the academics but rather a life changing experience that creates roots that, over time, will grow into a world of possibilities for the communities in which our alumni reside.

Naturally, he went on to describe that the alternatives to St. Pat’s, particularly in his immediate neighborhood, at the time, just weren’t very good options. It struck me as the same type of thought process that families today face in what options exist for their sons. One thing that has changed is what tuition was for this alum’s family, back in the day, pales in comparison to what tuition is today. This ongoing reality is the challenge for most of private education today at any level—grammar

This impact is easily overlooked as we move through life with so many things to do in a very fast paced environment; yet, deep down, it’s why we value our experience as Shamrocks and why so many of us, as alumni, do what we can to support our alma mater. This support takes the shape of so many things, yet the end game is to see that schools like St. Pat’s continue for generations to come so that many more young men can be rooted in these same values! It’s an experience that builds up the world around us.

As we just celebrated a very special and holy time of our calendar year, I ask for your continued reflection on what St. Pat’s meant to you back in the day and make the connection to who you have become. If you received our Christmas appeal in December, you’ll notice there is an ongoing tagline we are using—Great people like you—and we say that proudly knowing our alumni have contributed so much to the fabric of our country and the world! We are forever proud of the men you have become, and we celebrate this in many special ways through the course of the year. Today, we ask you to help us transform the next generation of Shamrocks! Best wishes to each of you and your families for a peaceful and joyful new year!

Leonard Family celebrates Endowment

Class of ’77 Honors Fallen Classmate Frank Caputo September 14, 2019 marked the one-year anniversary of the passing of a dear friend and loyal Shamrock, Frank Caputo ’77. To honor Frank’s passing, his family, friends, teammates and coaches gathered at Coach’s Bar & Grill in Norwood Park.

everyone to catch up with Brother David Galinski, Coach Busco, Coach Troxell, Coach Hayes and Coach Collins and see old teammates from the Class of ’77 who were able to attend. In all, over sixty alumni, spouses, and coaches made the night special.

Frank Caputo’s legacy as a student-athlete was highlighted by scoring the winning touchdown in an overtime game against stateranked Gordon Tech. In addition to being an All-Conference running back in football, he was a catcher for the baseball team.

Being a Shamrock meant a great deal to Frank. He continued his loyal support throughout the years by attending many football and basketball games, visiting old teachers and coaches and attending other alumni events.

Frank’s tragic passing while working construction on I-294 has been difficult on his family and friends. Through it all, Frank’s zest for life will always be remembered and his charismatic personality will shine in the memories of all who knew him. It was good to see Frank’s brothers (Lenny ’79 & Dominic) smile with every memory shared that evening. It was also wonderful for

His classmates hope to honor Frank’s memory and help future Shamrocks as they strive to make a difference and carry on with the proud traditions of Saint Patrick High School. The Class of ‘77 started a scholarship fund in Frank’s memory to help student-athletes at Saint Patrick. The initial gathering raised $3,500 and will be presented to a family this Spring.

On August 5, 2019, more than twenty-five of the Leonard family and friends gathered at Saint Patrick to dedicate the Lt. John M. Leonard ’75 Memorial Scholarship Endowment. The Endowment consists of a scholarship fund established by the Leonard family to help students with tuition assistance and to preserve the memory of their brother John. Lt. Leonard was a dedicated family man, Chicago firefighter, football coach, and proud Saint Patrick alumnus. The Leonard Family funded the Endowment with the proceeds from two annual fundraisers: the “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere” outdoor summer party held at Iron Horse Ale House, and the “Fins Up” Softball tournament at Merrimac Park. From 2016 to 2019, the two fundraisers were held over a single weekend in June and, because of their affiliation with Dan Leonard ’76, were sponsored by Margaritaville with help from the local “Parrothead” organization.
