Oh, the things you’d do with the house if only you had the money. Well, now you can with our
Home Improvement Loan
Crikey, there’s been some nip in the air this winter. But at least come next winter you can be as snug as a bug thanks to our
Green Loan‌
Our Green Loan offer means you get a special lower interest rate if you’re doing any work on your home that improves its energy efficiency. And just think of those lower energy bills. Here’s the kind of things you could do: First off, get a good handle on how energy efficient your home already is by getting an energy audit. An energy professional will visit your home and tell you exactly where you can make improvements. Plug up all those leaks that are letting all that cold air into the house. You’ll usually find them lurking around the doors and windows. Even a simple strip of insulation between the gaps can make the world of difference.
Think about new windows. They’ve come on leaps and bounds in terms of keeping the heat in, and the cold out. So it’s well worth thinking about replacing those old, leaky ones. Find out if you’ve any hollow doors around the house, and think about replacing them. That’s because any kind of hollow door is just a disaster, because the air just goes right through them and into you!
Something as simple as adding some insulation will not only keep your home cosy all year round, but could save you up to G500 on your energy bill.
Heating up the water always makes up anywhere between 15% to 25% of your annual heating bill. But not when you have one of those highefficiency water heaters. Another thing that’s well worth thinking about.
If you don’t have a programmable thermostat, get one. Seriously, they’ll save you about 10% on your energy bills, so they literally pay for themselves in just a few months.
That’s that so. Some great ways to put manners on those heating bills, by lowering them significantly. And why it’s well worth thinking about getting our Green Loan to make it happen. Oh, and If you visit www.seai.ie you’ll find even more great advice.
Visit us at www.stpatrickscu.ie and find out more about the Green Loan or give us a call at

Getting my Green Loan was a doddle. And it couldn’t have been more efficient. I simply applied online, emailed in a few required documents, and then popped into my branch to sign on the dotted line. A great experience from start to finish.
PCP (Personal Contract Plan) - A member’s view Here we go again, banging on about the pitfalls involved with a PCP (Personal Contract Plan). But we wouldn’t do it if it wasn’t important. This time a member shares his thoughts on why the devil really is in the detail. ‘First off, you really do need to know what you’re getting into. Yes, there can be lots of positives to a PCP (Boy, those low rates do sound appealing), but there are also negatives to be aware of before you get a new car with a PCP. Here’s a few of them: You’ll no doubt be told you can settle early without having to worry about a penalty, but be careful. That’s because the interest could be front loaded. If it is front loaded be aware that you might well end up owing more than you budgeted for. But whatever the structure, one sure rule of thumb is that the lower the PCP rate, the better. Before you drive your new car down the road, remember what might be coming down the road. Like will you keep to the mileage limits? Be honest with yourself. Of course, you can go over, but there will be a penalty for every extra kilometer. Remember too that the extra mileage penalty only kicks in if you plan on handing the car back at the end of your contract. Also, pretty much every PCP contract has a low value GMTV (Guaranteed Minimum Future Value) for the car factored into the agreement, a value which in a nutshell reflects how much you’ll repay over the term. Which could be a lot!
If you don’t have the balloon payment in your back pocket, you’re probably best to play your cards close to your chest and say you’re undecided whether you want to clear the balance or upgrade to a new model. That’s because if you reveal you don’t have the balloon payment handy you’ll be in a weaker negotiating position, and be at the mercy of the sales team in terms of how much equity they say is in your car. (The equity is calculated by the trade-in value less the GMTV, or whatever is outstanding.) Finally, because it appears that you might not have as much equity as you thought you would, you’ll probably feel pressured into going with the same car brand again. Bingo. They’ve got you. Again.
So what’s the better way? Our way of course, where a loan from your trusted Credit Union means you’ll be in control of your funds, which means you’ll be better able to negotiate at the dealership. And, of course, you’re far less likely to be tied into one particular car brand.
At the end of your contract you might be tempted to trade in the car and get a new model. But again, be careful. That’s because the sales teams in the car dealership can usually recognise if you have balloon payment to hand or not.

The Rising on our doorstep Did you know we’ve a little bit of Irish history right on our doorstep? Our head offices at Herbert Place were at the heart of many key locations where the events of The Rising unfolded. At Mount Street Bridge - just 300 yards from our offices - on Easter Monday, 24th April 1916, at 11:00a.m., Lieutenant Michael Malone inspired 17 Volunteers from ‘C’ Company, 3rd Battalion, to prevent British reinforcements from entering the city. That eventful morning, the rebels took up several key positions from the bridge to the junction of Northumberland Road and Pembroke Road - including Carrisbrooke House, 25 Northumberland Road, the Parochial Hall, and the Schoolhouse. The Volunteers faced a battalion of British Soldiers. Four Volunteers lost their lives, as well as a number of civilians. Official British casualties amounted to four officers and 216 other ranks killed or wounded during the engagement at Mount Street. There are lots of events around the country to remember the 1916 rising, checkout www.ireland.ie/ EasterRising for details of events in your area.
Joe Fortune - Child of The Rising Would you believe it was almost a month to the day of The Rising that our very own member, Joseph Fortune, was born - on 18th March 1916. Joe celebrated his 100th birthday with his family and friends last month. Congratulations from all of us Joe, it’s not every day you join Ireland’s Centenarian club. Huge thanks to Joe’s family for sending in these fabulous photographs, as you can see he’s not lost the glint in his eyes. We look forward to continue being of service to this grand man in the future.

Well Done. You did it!
SAVING TIPS • It’s amazing how quickly your savings build up and you can start buying things yourself, sometimes for the bigger things your parents might be able to help a little bit too. • If you get regular pocket money put a little bit aside for savings. • If you are lucky to get Communion or Confirmation money you can maybe treat yourself to something nice and what’s left can go into savings. • You can do chores in the house to earn extra money too! A good way to save for bigger things like holiday spending money or maybe you’ve seen a cool game or a scooter, is to open a Credit Union Account. It’s great fun to see your account online (an adult can help you with this) and see how much your savings grow!
We think saving up for games and toys is cool! Good luck with your saving goal!
Happy Saving :-)
