THE REV. ANNE B. JOLLY ELECTED BISHOP COADJUTOR

We Have a New Bishop

The Diocese of Ohio

The Rev. Anne B. Jolly was elected as Bishop Coadjutor of the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio during the 206th annual convention on November 19, 2022, at the Cleveland Marriott Downtown at Key Tower. She was elected on the second ballot after receiving a majority of both clergy and lay votes. The election concludes the year-long process of seeking a successor for Bishop Mark Hollingsworth, Jr., who began his service in the diocese in 2004.

Jolly is the first woman to be elected a bishop in the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio. She was one of three nominees. The other nominees were the Rev. Dr. Elaine Ellis Thomas and the Rev. Diana L. Wilcox, both from the Diocese of Newark.

Currently serving as the Rector of St. Gregory’s in Deerfield, IL, in the Diocese of Chicago, Jolly feels her call is to shape the church so that God’s people are equipped to live lives of faith and share the love and justice of Christ’s “Kindom.” As the President of the Standing Committee in the Diocese of Chicago (since 2019), she served as the head of the ecclesiastical authority for two years while the diocese was in an interim period between bishops. She has previously served at Good Shepherd in Austin, Texas; St. Paul’s in Chattanooga, Tennessee; and Christ Church in Greenville, South Carolina.

Addressing the convention, Jolly said, “I’m so excited and overwhelmed and ready to be with you…I want to thank everyone who has held us all in prayer…I am eager and ready to get there [Ohio] to get to know you, to listen to you, to help us solidify a vision together about how we can do things and be a part of God’s work in changing the world.”

Pending consent of a majority of the bishops with jurisdiction and the diocesan standing committees, Jolly will be ordained and consecrated on April 29, 2023, at Cleveland Public Auditorium. Presiding Bishop Michael Curry will preside. She will succeed Bishop Hollingsworth later next year, becoming the 12th Bishop of Ohio.

ADVENT SERMON SERIES

What Are You Waiting For?

One of the great joys of working at St. Paul’s is getting to share in ministry with my fellow priests, Jeanne, Brandon, and John. I look forward to hearing their sermons each week. I relish watching them move through ministry, interacting with members, teaching classes, and leading meetings. I continue to not only learn from them but delight in them as well.

Those who know Rev. Brandon won’t be surprised to know that he’s been expanding and shaping my understanding of the season of Advent. (One of Brandon’s spiritual gifts is enriching liturgy and people’s participation.) Brandon assigned an excerpt of Fleming Rutledge’s book Advent: The Once and Future Coming of Christ for a recent program staff discussion. The piece opened my eyes to things I’d never considered about the season of Advent. For instance, did you know that observance of this liturgical season has varied by denomination and tradition? For some, the primary focus of Advent is on spiritual preparation for Christmas and Christ’s birth. For others, the focus is more cosmic. Not just focusing on the first birth of Christ but anticipating His second birth at the end of time. For others still, the penitential practices of Advent were stressed (not unlike a Lenten observance). I can’t think of another liturgical season that contains such varied interpretations. And like with so much of our theology, these different foci profoundly shape our practices and beliefs, even if we’re not aware of it.

This Advent, I’ll join with my fellow assisting clergy in an exploration of the meanings of Advent. We’ll seek to explore the myriad of ways to understand this season as we shape a sermon series around the theme “What Are You Waiting For?” As you seek justice and right relationship with God and others, what are you waiting for? What are you waiting for as you long for healing? As you wait, what brings you hope? We’ll take up these questions together as we prepare our hearts and minds not only for Christ’s first coming but also for his second. I hope we’ll see you in church to journey the way with us.

Dr. Dr. Karel Paukert

In October, our very own Karel Paukert returned to his native Czech Republic. While there, he was bestowed with two awards. First, the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague awarded Karel an honorary doctorate. Along with a professorial appointment and a gold medal, the doctor honoris causa degree represents the highest rate of appreciation for one’s life and achievements that the university grants. Karel received this degree for his contributions to the field of organ playing and for sharing and promoting Czech music internationally.

The second prize came from the Ministry of Culture, similar to our National Endowment for the Arts, of the Czech Republic for his contributions to music. During a nationally televised awards ceremony that included other artists for their work in theater and the like, Karel received his award for his lifelong concert and pedagogical activities, and for his sharing the good reputation of Czech interpretive and dramaturgical art.

Karel began his tenure at St. Paul’s in 1979. He taught at several universities, primarily at Northwestern University and the Cleveland Institute of Music (C.I.M.) — Kevin Jones, our Director of Music, studied with him there. Despite this being his second honorary doctorate, the first from C.I.M. in 2003, and the international acclaim, Karel is a humble servant to music and the St. Paul’s community. You’ll often find him practicing with vim and vigor, washing dishes in the upstairs kitchen, turning pages, pumping the organ after a windstorm, or attempting to tell a joke through a mischievous grin.

The following is an excerpt from Karel’s acceptance speech at the Academy of Musical Arts in Prague.

“I began to understand in my old age that my life’s journey in music is not accidental but is rather outlined for me. I benefitted greatly from getting acquainted with bioethicist Stephen G. Post, his writings on Unlimited Love, and continue to cherish occasional meetings with him. I began to understand that we are led in life by the Deep Mind, God or Jehovah, Buddha or Jesus. Whether we are Christians or Catholics, Protestants or Presbyterians, depends very much on where we were born and where we live. For a long time, I have contributed the happy times in my life to pure luck, or to a chance. (My grandmother, Marie, would contribute it to my being born on January first.)

“Even during my long commitments — whether it be pedagogical at Northwestern University from 1968 to 1974, or as a curator of Musical Arts at the Cleveland Museum of art from 1974 to 2004 — I was always dedicating my energy and time to sacred music. On September 1, one of my prized students took over the reins as the Director of Music at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland Heights — a program that I cultivated for 44 years. While I am prepared to be helpful to him, I do not know how long or short my terrestrial journey will continue to be. I do know the extent that it will be welcome, and I will contribute with music, love, and understanding to the lives of those around me in mutual joy and grief.

“I have always remembered my roots and growing up in the heart of Europe. I did not think I would ever be able to visit again. Now, after my country regained — thirty-plus years ago — its lost freedom, I cherish every opportunity to return.”

On the Incarnation

Sundays, Beginning December 4, 3:30 p.m.

On the Incarnation is a classic of Christian theology. Written by St. Athanasius in the fourth century, it articulates the theological vision of the Councils of Nicaea: that the Son of God became fully human so that we might become god. Its influence on all subsequent theology, East and West, makes it one of the few “must-read” books for all who want to know more about Christian faith and life. Join us for a three-session exploration of the life and thoughts of Athanasius of Alexandria and his friend St. Anthony the Great, the father of desert spirituality. On the Incarnation can be purchased from the publisher (svspress.com) or Amazon as a paperback or e-book, and financial assistance is available. All meetings will be from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in the Brooks Room, and virtual participation is an option. Contact Rev. John to sign up or learn more: jkennedy@stpauls-church.org

Spirituality on the Silver Screen Wednesdays Beginning January 11

Spirituality on the Silver Screen returns in person! Members of the St. Paul’s community will host movies followed by discussion on Wednesday evenings between Epiphany and Ash Wednesday. The selections will relate to the sacraments, our theme for the program year. The sacramental way reminds us of — and draws us more deeply into — our identity as embodied, creaturely beings. We enter into communion with God not just through ideas but through our senses and stories — our journeys through life. Senses, story, and symbols come together in cinema in a powerful combination that is perfect for enriching our exploration of the sacraments. Look for more information in the new year.

Looking to Next Year

Thank you to the 238 households who have submitted their pledges to the 2023 annual operating fund. As parish leaders are forming the 2023 budget, it’s critical that they be able to accurately forecast income in order to establish a balanced budget. With the extraordinary inflation we are all experiencing, we would like to offer our staff cost of living raises. However, this will be difficult to do if projected income does not meet the level necessary to allow for that.

If you have not yet submitted your pledge for the 2023 annual fund, we faithfully request that you do so, either by returning your pledge form or by pledging online at www.stpauls-church.org/pledge. And if you have already submitted your pledge, we thank you and ask that you prayerfully consider whether an increase might be possible.

We extend our gratitude to those who have submitted a pledge or gift toward the 2023 annual fund as of November 30. We have received 238 pledges totaling $1,211,500. To enable cost of living increases for the staff, our goal is $1,550,000. We will be updating this list in the February Parish Notes.

A Note About Gratavid

Those who have submitted their pledge have received an email with a video ‘thank you’ from the church, sent through Gratavid.com. Gratavid is a new communications service we have employed. You will see it more frequently as we begin to send birthday greetings, event invitations, and other video announcements through this service. This is not spam! We encourage you to open these emails and hope that you find them to be a fun and engaging way to receive communications from St. Paul’s.
