Ashley Easton and Lawrence Hill Neighbourhood Partnership Grant Scheme Dear Colleagues and Residents, You are invited to apply to the Ashley, Easton and Lawrence Hill Neighbourhood Partnership Wellbeing Grants “Stapleton Road Youth Projects fund. Please make sure you read the full document below as grant criteria for this grant is different from previous rounds. Purpose of grants The challenges that have manifest on Stapleton Road over the past year are complex and touch young people, family and community networks across the Ashley, Easton and Lawrence Hill areas. A number of initiatives to work with young people, parents and teachers have been put in place to address some of these challenges. For the purpose of this grant, we will build on these initiatives by funding small-scale community-led, projects to help tackle the following challenges: Challenges a) Young people getting involved with/aspiring to street crime. b) Postcode rivalry and intolerance between communities. c) Young people not in education, employment or training. d) Greater understanding by communities and decision makers of the challenges facing young people and how we can work together to give them a better start in life. e) Lack of trust in the authorities means few people from the communities most affected are influencing decision-making. f) Damaging the environment through dropping litter and tagging. We are interested in supporting projects that use one of the following methods to address one or more of the challenges stated above: Methods of Addressing Challenges a) Build greater understanding, teamwork and tolerance between young people and families from communities across the three wards (we will not fund projects that are single focus in terms of geography or ethnicity). 1

b) Explore the issues from young people’s perspective with a view to sharing this perspective with the wider community and decision makers (the more creative the better). c) Build leadership skills in communities (young people, parents and family networks) d) Encourage young people to be part of the democratic life of the city by making their voice heard and shaping the communities they live in, Stapleton Road in particular. e) Positive role models / Setting an example – how do we as adults, whether we are service providers, neighbours aunts, uncles, teachers, youth workers set an example to young people? What can we do to help young people from Easton, Ashley and Lawrence Hill have the best possible start in life? f) Create positive opportunities for young people who hang out on Stapleton Road. g) Environmental improvements in the Stapleton Road area. h) If you have a creative new method for addressing one or more of the challenges above, please explain your idea on the application form. We want to support creative work that will begin to build a different culture and new exciting ideas are very welcome! Special Requirements for “Stapleton Road Youth Projects” Grant Recipients The normal monitoring procedures listed on page 4 of this information pack still apply to this particular grant pot. The nature of the challenges and the ongoing work by the Neighbourhood Partnership mean we would like to ensure the lessons learned during all projects funded by this grant are shared with partners and agencies. We want to build work funded by these grants and learn from it so we are asking all grant recipients to attend one meeting/event to share experiences and make sure there are clear channels to progress any recommendations/ requests/ suggestions that have come out of the process. We would also like all applicants to think creatively about how you record the project and share any information or messages from the people you are working with as appropriate. If necessary, please build the costs of this into your proposal.

Process and size of grant • Applicants should complete a current application form. • We will consider part funding projects where applicants have secured funding and other resources (e.g. materials, volunteers) elsewhere, as long as the proposed project will lead to a clear outcome and conclude by the project deadline (1st July, 2011). • We have £9,000 worth of grant funding to award and we aim to fund a few projects with that sum. We are not setting a maximum grant amount, but you should keep in mind our goal of funding multiple projects when putting together your application. Larger projects, that are a collaboration between groups/organisations and Neighbourhoods that would not usually work together are considered “desirable” and are encouraged by the Neighbourhood Partnership. • Grants must be fully spent by 1st July • Any unspent funding will be returned to the Neighbourhood Partnership. Awarding of grants • A panel of residents from Ashley, Easton and Lawrence Hill will consider the applications and make recommendations to the Neighbourhood Partnership.
