Marley 15
One Love Party
This year, Jamaica (along with Caribbean neighbours Trinidad and Tobago) celebrate fifty years of political independence. To kick start a year of celebration and reflection, Downbeat Melody selector Steve Rice will be putting on a Marley After Party in our Café/ Bar. Expect a vintage Jamaican sound system (pictured above) and some very special guests including veteran mic man Champian, John Stapleton (Wanted Records) and Peter D (More Rockers/Smith & Mighty). Join us for a night of celebration of all things reggae and roots with an old school twist. This is a free event. Ticket holders to the Sat 21 April 20:30 screening of Marley will get priority entry to the One Love Party.
Marley
Dir: Kevin Macdonald ’12 USA/UK 2hrs 25mins Oscar® winning director Macdonald (Touching The Void) makes a triumphant return to documentary with this, the definitive life story of reggae legend Bob Marley. Rare footage and incredible performances are combined with revelatory interviews from the people who knew him best to tell his story from his childhood as a mixed race farmboy, to his rise to international superstardom and his death from cancer aged 36. Much more than a simple biography, it examines his religious convictions, political ideals and his relationships (he fathered 11 children by seven women) as well as his music. An incredibly detailed look at a towering figure of musical and social history whose music and message continues to resonate to this day.
