City homeowners will want to take time to read our feature on Accessory Dwellings, it explains a new expansion of the city zoning regulations that allow you to convert or add on to your existing or new home with an accessory dwelling unit (ADU). Many ADUs can already be found in older neighborhoods as garage apartments and carriage homes, but the new amendment is good news for homeowners in all areas of the city.

It’s summer, so time to relax with a short vacay. We visit the World Equestrian Center in Ocala for a luxurious weekend getaway and suggest some local beach resorts perfect for Staycations close to home. If you can’t get away, consider popping onto the Veranda at the beautiful Vinoy Resort & Golf Club here on our downtown waterfront, where you can sip a signature Autograph hand-crafted cocktail. Accessory Dwellings

New regulations allow more city residents to expand their living space.

Zach Curry knew when he moved into his small Historic Kenwood home three years ago that he was going to make some changes. “When you have a 1,000-square-foot-bungalow, you want to extend it if you can,” he said. In the rear of his backyard, a neglected 175-square-foot single-car garage sat alone and forlorn; Curry had a vision. “It was completely dilapidated and really small, but I knew I could turn it into a usable space,” he said. “People thought I was crazy, but we ended up designing it as a guest room and a home office and I love it.”

Curry hired Alec Smith, principal architect for Boone Architectural Restoration, to reimagine the garage into an accessory dwelling. Smith went to work and in four months transformed the decrepit structure into a delightful living space, filled with color and charm and historic touches.

He kept the original cement floor and created a bathroom incorporating design elements in keeping with the home’s original 1924 construction such as Art Deco floor tiles and stained glass windows. Sunlight floods the interior through double leaded glass doors; beams add a visual complement to the A-frame ceiling. A

sofa folds out into a bed and a desk along one wall offers a pleasing office space.

Curry is one of many homeowners in traditional St. Pete neighborhoods who have created an accessory dwelling on their property. Known as Accessory Dwelling Units (ADU), these units were previously allowed in traditional or historic neighborhoods only, but are gaining popularity since a city zoning amendment in July 2022 that expands the types of neighborhoods in which they are allowed.

The city’s ADU regulation requires a separate kitchen, bathroom and sleeping area. It has a separate address and utility meters; common examples are second-story garage apartments.

At only 175 square feet, Curry’s guest room/office is considered an Assisted Living Space (ALS), a subcategory of an ADU. An ALS is separate from the main home, but is not considered an independent living space. They are generally smaller structures renovated into a

guest room or home office and do not have a full kitchen, separate address, or utility meters.

In both ADUs and ASLs, short-term rentals are not allowed, meaning they cannot be rented as an AirBnB type of lodging.

Serving a need

Prior to July 2022, ADUs were allowed only in older traditional neighborhoods, said Elizabeth Abernathy, Director of Planning and Development Services for the City of St. Petersburg. These neighborhoods were historic in nature such as Historic Kenwood or Old Northeast where an abundance of early 1900s homes had a standalone garage or carriage house. A boom in “mother-in-law” garage apartments happened in the 1920s when second-story living spaces were added.

“Regulations have changed over time and with the new zoning amendment we are allowing ADUs in more areas — about 70 percent of single family lots are now allowed, including outside of traditional neighborhoods,” explains Abernathy.

Changes in the zoning were created as part of a longterm strategy to address affordability concerns in the city. “They are part of an effort to reduce regulatory barriers on different types of housing in able to provide different options, ” she explained. “ADUs can serve different functions. They can be a long-term rental unit to help pay the homeowner’s mortgage or pay for home repairs, or allow somebody to stay in their house. They can allow a caregiver to remain on the property and help people stay in their homes throughout their life. Or they can provide additional rental units in a neighborhood that is not typically full of apartments.”

Accessory dwellings do not have to be a detached structure like a garage, but can be a part of the house, says Abernathy. For example, a homeowner of a large house in a traditional neighborhood could remodel a part of the house to be a rental unit. Or the accessory dwelling can be new construction. “A new house can build an accessory dwelling; a lot of builders are starting to offer that,” she adds. “A new garage can have a second floor apartment. In suburban neighborhoods, an ADU would more likely be attached to the house since they don’t have alleys.”

Preserving history

Zach Curry uses his accessory dwelling as a home office, but it’s also the perfect guest suite. He lived in it for three months when his bungalow was being renovated. Curry also had Smith renovate the small yard between his bungalow and the ADU; it had unsightly concrete slabs and suffered from neglect when he purchased the property.

Curry’s new dwelling is a single room with an attached bathroom. Alec Smith of Boone Architectural Restoration designed the space to fit within the city zoning codes. Continued on next page PHOTOS/BOONE ARCHITECTURAL RESTORATION LLC.

A large pergola was built to shade the sun, pavers replaced the concrete slabs, and outdoor furnishings completed the redesign with seating, a fire pit and a dining area. Curry added landscaping around the perimeter to create a lush, tropical oasis perfect for relaxing or entertaining — and increasing his living space dramatically.

Architect Alec Smith cautions homeowners in historic neighborhoods to do research on city zoning and Florida building codes before getting deep into design planning. Restrictions and regulations differ depending if the neighborhood is a designated local historic district or a National Historic District. Historic Kenwood, for example, has both. Smith figures Kenwood has the most accessory dwellings of any city neighborhood, out of 1,200

parcels there is an estimated 107 ADUs, mostly second story garage apartments.

“Whenever you do smaller additions or renovations to accessory dwelling units in historic districts, it’s all about preserving the neighborhood character,” warns Smith. “The architect will generally do research on the history of the home and the character of the neighborhood to take cues to build the ADU to be historically appropriate. Every effort is made to preserve historic buildings if they are structurally sound.”

Many details are specific to the building, he adds.

“Know the rules and regulations if you live in a historic district. In some cases, a certificate of appropriateness is necessary for any exterior changes or additions, and approval from the Community Planning and Preservation Committee … some tax advantages may also be applicable.”

He consults with city staff during the design process for appropriateness, including material choices, roof height, and types of balconies. Setbacks and parking space requirements are also a factor.

“If you have a home in a historic neighborhood and are thinking about an accessory dwelling, I recommend reaching out to city staff before you begin planning,” says Smith. “You can avoid problems in the future by finding out in advance what your zoning category is. Know what the rules are.”

Rare Drawings Show Sketches of Dali’s Imagination

ST. PETERSBURG - Nealy 100 rare drawings in pencil, pen and ink, charcoal, watercolor and gouache created by Salvador Dali throughout his career are now on view in “Where Ideas Come From: Dalí’s Drawings,” at the Dali Museum.

Curated by Peter Tush, the museum’s curator of education, the exhibit is organized chronologically from 1916 to 1974, and in four distinct periods of the artist’s life. They include studies for major oil paintings, portraits, experimental drawing techniques and commercial projects, including film.

More than half of the artworks come the museum’s vaults and are on view for the first time in 35 years; they will rarely be displayed again due to their fragile nature. “As the Museum’s collection nears 100 years of age, conservation is essential in advancing our mission to preserve Dalí’s legacy,” said Tush. “This is especially important for works on paper, which are very fragile and sensitive to light.”

In the Early Period opening gallery, we see student sketches, book illustrations, poster designs and self- portraits that demonstrate Dalí’s journey from Classicism to Cubism and eventually anti-art. The works also showcase his natural mastery of drawing and painting techniques. Dalí learned to draw at a young age and adopted the approach of Old Master painters in his work.

Next, the Surrealism section presents studies for such works as “The Weaning of Furniture Nutrition” (1934), illustrations for the poetic novel “Le Chants de Maldoror” (1940) and examples of Dalí’s experimentation with various Surrealist drawing techniques. This section also features “Study for ‘Disappearing Images’” (1939) which marks the beginnings of “Old Age, Adolescence Infancy (The Three Ages),” a significant 1940 double image oil painting in The Dalí’s collection.

Following World War II, Dalí coined himself a classicist and “Nuclear Mystical painter.” Thus, the next gallery includes illustrations for works by the Italian poet, writer and philosopher Dante Alighieri and the ballet “Tres Picos,” familiar motifs of exploding watches, flies, disintegrating figures and religious-tinged images of dissolving angels.

16 StPeteLifeMag.com July/August 2023 ARTS & CULTURE
Illustration for “Tres Picos” (1955) is watercolor and ink on paper.

In “Study for Soft Watch Exploding” (1954), the sketch for “Soft Watch at the Moment of the First Explosion,” Dalí presents an object that has disintegrated into nearly unrecognizable particles. Transformations and studies for “The Sacrament of the Last Supper” (1955) and “Christ of St. John of the Cross” (1951) round out this section.

The final section, Late Period, includes diverse selections with small studies of master works “The Hallucinogenic Toreador” (19691970) and “Galacidalacidesoxiribunucleicacid (Homage to Crick and Watson)” (1962-1963), both in the Museum’s collection. The exhibition concludes with the 1974 “Iceberg” sketch, a self-portrait Dalí gifted to the founders of The Dalí Museum, A. Reynolds and Eleanor Morse.

“Where Ideas Come From” also marks the debut of two recent Surrealist acquisitions by The Dalí: “Drawing for ‘Bacchanale,’ Ludwig II of Bavaria” (1939), a ballet-inspired portrait of King Ludwig II of Bavaria, and “Untitled (Paranoiac Face)” (c. 1935), a frontispiece dedicated to Paul Éluard from Dalí’s book “Conquest of the Irrational”.

In the final gallery, visitors to the exhibit will have a chance to try their hand at drawing like the Surrealist icon. A series of instructional videos, sketchpads and pencils are available to create symbolic Dalinian imagery or other ideas inspired by the exhibit.

“Where Ideas Come From: Dalí’s Drawings,” is on view through Oct. 22; find more information at TheDali.org.

MFA Photo Exhibit Takes Deep Dive Into Indian Nation Culture

For over 20 years, Tom Jones, or to use his Ho-Chunk name ChakShepSkaKah (White Eagle), has created a visual record and exploration of his tribe’s members and culture. In “Tom Jones: Here We Stand” at the Museum of Fine Arts St. Petersburg, Jones’s photographs examine identity and place with an emphasis on the experience of Native American communities.

His series are presented narratives both in color and stark black and white, ranging from portraits and slices of everyday life to studies and abstract compositions. The result is an exhibit that brings to light the past and present cultural identity and misconceptions about identity within the American Indian culture.

Born in North Carolina, Jones lived in Orlando before moving to Wisconsin and the original homeland of the Ho-Chunk Nation at age 15. In graduate school, he began an ongoing photographic essay on the contemporary life of his Ho-Chunk community, beginning first with elders in the tribe. Later series include veterans’ memorials at the annual Black River Falls Powwow ceremony and elaborately hand-beaded formal portraits that connect tradition with the present.

His work stretches the boundaries by representing material and popular/commodity culture—advertising, architecture, and selfrepresentation. Much of Jones’s work aims to counteract and corrects decades of misinformation and misrepresentation of American Indians.

Featuring more than 100 works spanning 1998–2021, the exhibition is the first major retrospective of the HoChunk photographer’s work. The Ho-Chunk traditional homeland is around Black River Falls, Wisconsin. Formerly called the Winnebago, the tribe dates to the 1630s. Today, there are approximately 10,000 Ho-Chunk citizens living in the state’s five tribal districts, and scattered throughout the United States and the world.

“While each of Jones’s series is distinctly different, the message remains consistent: the Ho-Chunk are not vanishing or frozen in time,” said Dr. Jane Aspinwall, MFA’s Senior Curator of Photography. “Jones’s photographs emphasize a solid, generational commitment to family, tribal community, and land. His photographs reclaim appropriated images and set the historical record straight.”

“Tom Jones: Here We Stand” originated at the Museum of Wisconsin Art in West Bend, Wisconsin. The exhibition was co-curated by Dr. Jane L. Aspinwall, Senior Curator of Photography at the MFA, and Graeme Reid, Director of Exhibitions at the Museum of Wisconsin Art. It continues through August 27. Visit mfastpete.org for more information.

A regular smiling face on the downtown scene is Jose Martinez, owner of Sartorial Inc. menswear boutique on Beach Drive (which celebrated its 5th anniversary in 2022) and president of the Downtown Business Association. A resident of downtown and avid supporter of small businesses, culture and the arts, Martinez seems to have his thumb on the pulse of the city at any given time. SPL caught up with him recently to find out what’s moving and grooving in his world.

Why did you decide to open Sartorial?

My wife Natalie and I chose St. Petersburg to live because of the energy, vibrancy, diversity, and depth of artistic and cultural attractions. We are also very much in love with the natural beauty of the waterfront and downtown parks as well as the serenity of the beaches just a hop and skip away.

Sartorial came out of a desire to stay in St. Pete while supporting the needs of a growing city. The technology job I was working on was scrapped, so I started looking around for something else to do. Natalie, and my son Jelani and I looked at male clothing and agreed that St. Pete needed a male specialty boutique with a focus on affordable premium/luxury that catered to the St. Pete vibe. St. Pete once was a paragon of fashion and style. Sartorial Inc. was created to reflect the chill personality of St. Pete while supporting “style for the classic male.”

What is your philosophy about supporting local businesses?

As president of the Downtown Business Association and with Natalie a Chamber Ambassador we have had the privilege of meeting and knowing many business owners and leaders in our wonderful city. Our philosophy of support centers around those who support local business and/or support the organizations that give back to the community we are privileged to live in. Since arriving in St Pete, I have admired the approach of the Westphals, Yepeses, Bogatts, Sanchezs, Damkoehlers and Jon Reno LaBudde, to name a few.

We hear you will be opening a new menswear store

downtown soon with Jelani playing an important role. Can you spill the beans?

Yes! Jelani has a lot of experience, having been at J. Crew, PRADA, SUITSUPPLY and Saks Fifth Avenue. He is a true “water walker” and well respected within the industry. Jelani is currently representing St. Croix Collections, the only remaining luxury knit craft menswear manufacturer in the USA. Our new location will be called Style Clothing to support a younger and more value conscious demographic where the value proposition is “affordable quality” versus the “affordable premium/luxury” offering at Sartorial Inc.

The city is attracting younger professionals looking for “affordable quality” locally that can be worn at work or at the many events around town. Style Clothing will also be offering tuxedo rentals for prom, events, and weddings. The approach at both stores will be to provide clothing that supports style and comfort for the warm Florida weather.

Why do you love living in St. Pete?

Values of community, diversity, arts/culture, and an environment that is truly welcoming. The Warehouse Arts District Association (WADA), Dali, Palladium Theater and Mahaffey. St. Pete will adopt you once you adopt St. Pete. As residents of downtown, we are walking distance to many of the great restaurants as well as the Pier. Not only is St. Pete walkable but it is super bicycle friendly. We regularly take advantage of our 54-mile Pinellas Trail for exercise and recreation.

When you have a free evening or weekend, what do you like to do?

Well, I have recently revived my disco moves since going to Good Night John Boy, which was fun! Typically, I am a live music guy for jazz at any location. We in St. Pete are incredibly lucky to be able to see exceptional talent like Nate Najar and Daniella, Bryan Hughes, James Suggs, Hiram Hazley, Shawn Browne, and the Legendary John Lamb on any given night. Other nights, I am at my locker at Sauvignon Wine Locker, or enjoying Baba’s, Beau & Mo’s, Allelo, Bacchus, Bin6 South or simply enjoying the beautiful serenity at The Vinoy.

“Denise and her whole team have been an absolute pleasure to work with, by far THE BEST in class! Denise helped us with both the sale of our current house and the purchase of our new one. Through the whole process she was fully available to us at all times no matter how many additional listings she had. Another part of our great experience with Denise is that she had a reliable contact for everything (contractor, roofer, plumber, painters, gutter repairs etc..) that would be out for repairs the second she asked. You cannot go wrong with the A-Team youʼre in the best hands possible! “

“THE BEST Realtor in St. Pete! Denise found us an amazing home, for the right price and on our schedule before it even hit the market. Denise and her team are tapped in to the St. Pete community--if you want to find a great home in Pinellas County, sheʼs your Realtor. Denise was responsive, easy to work with, and always on time. You wonʼt go wrong using Denise. I highly recommend her.“

“Denise and her team are, hands down, THE BEST. Weʼve worked with Denise on selling our home, buying another one, and then selling it. Each time, she went above and beyond to make the experience smooth and stress-free. She works with a qualified lender, and she knows the area (she is a native of St. Pete). We knew what to expect every step of the way. She makes sure everything is in order well before closing date and takes care of all the paperwork, lending, etc. I could not recommend her and her team more- if you need a Realtor, look no further than the Denise Antonewitz Team!“

Wildlife in Contemporary Art

The James Museum gives wildlife a chance to tell stories in a contemplative exhibit.

A number of years ago I was skiing in Jackson, Wyoming, when I saw a brochure for the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Never one to pass up an interesting gallery or museum, I took an afternoon off the slopes to visit the museum, tucked in a hillside just off the two-lane highway across from an elk preserve.

Yes, the skiing was great at Jackson, but the museum blew me away. Here was an astounding collection of wildlife art from life-size bear, bison and elk bronze statues to exquisite paintings, ceramics, wood and glass all representing wild animals from around the world.

A selection from this world-class permanent collection can now be seen in Un/Natural Selections: Wildlife in Contemporary Art, at The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art. Quite simply, don’t miss it.

Organized by the National Museum of Wildlife Art, the exhibit presents a diverse range of contemporary works portraying American wildlife in a complexity of habitats that are open to question. The images seek to address humanity’s interconnectedness with the natural world, while questioning what role we may play in the downfall or demise of our native wildlife.

The exhibit is a complement to the James Museum’s first-rate wildlife art collection. “Enthusiasts of the museum’s wildlife art will love how this family-friendly exhibition explores new ways of understanding animals and the spaces they inhabit,” says The James Museum Curator of Art Emily Kapes.

In some works, the animals appear to be in alternative, unnatural spaces. The art invites the viewer to look closely, see the hidden

message and ponder how the animals have adapted or not to human existence. Each tells a story, can you figure it out?

It’s hard not to be drawn immediately to the life-size horse in the midst of the gallery. Dubbed Pegasus, this chestnut mare stands tall and mighty, yet is constructed of strips of found wood, discarded aluminum cans, wire and steel. A cascade of aluminum butterflies alight on Paul Villinski’s sculpture, as if to lift it up in flight. Nearby a black bear bronze sculpture stands on hind legs, attentively searching for something. In Little Bear, artist Nicola Hicks mixes plaster and straw to cast her bronze.

In the painting The Only West Left is the One in Your Head, artist Robert McCauley’s black bear stands frozen and gazing at the viewer while birds hover around. There is no background, only white. But look in the upper right corner, a stage microphone dangles above, as if waiting for a comment. The bear is a symbol of the Western frontier now lost in time, and the confusion of an ever-changing world.

At first whimsical, a bronze of three rhinos standing atop one another has a different meaning. In The Last Three Stood Proud and Tall, activist artists Gillie and Marc Schattner of Australia were influenced by a trip to Kenya in 2018 to see the only remaining white rhinos in existence.

Avian art has a large presence in Un/Natural Selections, and rightly so. For centuries, wild and exotic birds have been hunted

and killed for their colorful plumage, often to extinction. A series of stunning etchings with aquatint by Walton Ford have an Audubon-esqe quality, but pay attention to the details. Ford presents a critique, sometimes scribbled on the edges of the work, of each bird’s predicament.

In La Historia Me Absolvera (History Will Absolve Me), a colorful parrot glances mournfully over its shoulder. “The last living bird there is a record of at La Vega, close to the Lapata Swamp,” the artist offers below. In Swadeshi-cide, Ford is satirically commenting on the history of colonialism with an exotic bird returning to its nest only to find it filled with an assortment of different breeds of smaller birds. If you’ve never seen a bird look surprised, this one has it.

In the massive California, George Boorujy presents a weathered but regal California condor standing forlornly upon the back of a California gray whale. The artist seems to present the struggle of two species in a world of climate change and pollution.

There is much more to contemplate in Un/Natural Selections, from coyotes and elephants to elk, wolves, owls and even penguins. Each has a story to tell, so don’t be a hurry. It’s time well spent.

Un/Natural Selections: Wildlife in Contemporary Art runs through September 17. Go to thejamesmuseum.org to learn about special programming and more information.

Refreshing Summer Sparkling Wines

As summer beckons with its long sunny days and sweltering celebrations, there’s no better way to elevate your gatherings than with a glass of sparkling wine. Whether you’re toasting to a special occasion or simply seeking a refreshing sip, sparkling wine adds a touch of elegance and effervescence to any summer affair. To help hone in on the sparkling category, here is a curated selection of sparkling wine recommendations to help you make the most of the season.

Prosecco: An Italian Classic

No summer sparkling wine list is complete without the mention of Prosecco. Hailing from the Veneto region of Italy, Prosecco offers delicate bubbles, a fruity profile, and excellent value. It’s up for debate, but arguably the best Prosecco comes from the hill of Cartizze. Cartizze is considered a “Grand Cru” of Prosecco because of its southern exposure, cool breezes, mineral-rich clay soil, and low yields. Opt for a Brut Prosecco, such as Bisol ‘Jeio’ Prosecco, to enjoy its crispness and notes of green apple, pear, and citrus. For an extra dry Prosecco, Astoria Prosecco is a versatile wine that pairs wonderfully with light appetizers, seafood, and fresh salads, making it a perfect choice for picnics or outdoor soirées.

Crémant: The Other French Bubbles

For those seeking an alternative to Champagne, Crémant offers a delightful selection of sparkling wines from various French regions. Crémant d’Alsace can provide vibrant acidity and subtle fruitiness. For an outstanding example, consider Domaine Pfister, Crémant d’Alsace, Blanc de Blancs. Its delicate bubbles and flavors of apple, lemon, and toast make it an excellent choice for summer celebrations. Winemaker Mélanie Pfister took over from her father in 2006 after completing internships with five of the top wineries in the world.

Alternatively, explore Crémant de Bourgogne with Jean-Noël Gagnard, Grand Lys, Extra Brut. This sparkling wine captivates with its creamy texture, minerality, and hint of lemon. Pair Crémant with

creamy cheeses, grilled vegetables, or charcuterie to enhance its versatility. These affordable and sophisticated options are excellent for summer celebrations, particularly when paired with creamy cheeses, grilled vegetables, or charcuterie.

Cava: A Spanish Sparkler

Originating from the Penedès region of Catalonia, Spain, Cava is an exceptional sparkling wine choice for summer. Crafted using traditional methods, Cava captures the essence of Spain with its vibrant effervescence and citrus-driven flavors. For a standout Cava, try Raventós i Blanc De Nit Rosé. With its light pink hue, flavors of wild berries, and a touch of minerality, it’s a great choice for summer gatherings. Raventós i Blanc has been family run since 1497, with Pepe Raventós, representing the twenty-first generation of the family to work these vineyards.

Alternatively, Segura Viudas Brut Reserva offers a fantastic balance of freshness and complexity, showcasing apple, pear, and toasty notes. Pair Cava with seafood paella, tapas, or light desserts to fully appreciate its versatility.

Rosé Champagne: Elegance in a Glass

If you’re seeking a touch of luxury and sophistication, rosé Champagne is the ultimate summer indulgence. With its delicate pink hue and seductive flavors, rosé Champagne offers a symphony of red fruits, floral notes, and a hint of toastiness.

Billecart-Salmon, Brut Rosé Champagne is an excellent choice with its refined structure, fine bubbles, and layers of raspberry, strawberry, and rose petals. Billecart-Salmon has been a benchmark for rosé since the 1970’s, when this wine solidified its spot as the house’s flagship cuvée.

For another option, Laurent-Perrier, Brut, Cuvée Rosé is a crowdpleaser, boasting elegance and a vibrant palate. These bottles are both non-vintage cuvées, which is most common amongst

34 StPeteLifeMag.com July/August 2023
DINING OUT

Champagne. This allows the house to create a consistent style and protect the overall quality from a less-desirable vintage. Non-vintage Champagne is typically less expensive than vintage Champagnes, which are produced in smaller quantities. Whether you opt for a vintage Champagne or a non-vintage blend, the effervescence and elegance of rosé Champagne make it a perfect companion for celebratory moments or a romantic sunset.

Sparkling Rosé: A Summer Essential

No summer gathering is complete without the refreshing allure of a sparkling rosé. This versatile category includes sparkling wines from around the world, offering a range of styles and flavors to suit every palate. Look for sparkling rosés from the Loire Valley (Domaine Lucien, Crochet, Sancerre, Rosé), California (Schramsberg, Brut, Rosé), or the United Kingdom (Chapel Down, English Rose).

These rosé options offer much more variety of style and typically cost a little less than their Champagne counterparts. With sparkling rosé, expect a delightful burst of summer berries, watermelon, and a crisp, dry finish. Pair it with grilled seafood, light pasta dishes, or fresh fruit salads to enhance the fruity and vibrant character of these wines.

Sparkling wine brings joy and celebration to the warm summer months. From the classic elegance of Prosecco to the refined charm of Champagne, the options are plentiful and offer something for every occasion. Whether you’re sipping by the pool, enjoying a picnic at the pier, or raising a toast at a summer wedding, bubbles will elevate your experience and create lasting memories. So, grab a bottle, chill it to perfection, and let the bubbles of summer unfold in each glass. Cheers to a sparkling summer!

The LEGACY Continues

St. Pete’s iconic Vinoy Resort has a new look as an Autograph Collection Hotel.

The venerable Vinoy Resort celebrates a new chapter in its nearly 100-year history with the completion of the first phase of renovations. The 354-room hotel recently dropped Renaissance from its name after rebranding as an Autograph Collection Hotel, part of Marriott Bonvoy’s portfolio of high-end luxury hotels around the world.

The hotel engaged with world renowned Rockwell Group to redesign the public spaces from the lobby and ballrooms to guest rooms. Every detail was carefully considered by a historic preservation expert, who advised throughout the design process.

The refreshed Vinoy Resort and Golf Club combines sophisticated yet modern elegance with Old-World Florida grandeur from the reimagined Veranda with its comfortable bar overlooking the marina to a refined new Grand Lobby complete with a chic French patisserie. Remodeled ballrooms, spa and guest rooms round out this phase of renovations.

The Grand Lobby

Step into the Grand Lobby for a complete surprise. The former check-in counter has moved to the far end, opening up the central space with its original ceramic tile flooring and cypress wood beam ceiling. Contemporary custom lantern-like chandeliers are a perfect fit. A new boutique, Sunni Spenser, has claimed a lobby space along with Lottie, a French bakery.

Guests are invited to grab a seat at one of Lottie’s bistro tables, or in an outdoor patio space. An in-house staff creates exquisite house-made pastries and sweets, including a signature pistachio cake, macarons, gelato, and over 20 flavors of truffles. The menu also features classic French lunch fare such as seared tuna niçoise salad, quiche Lorraine and a jambon fromage croissant.

The Veranda

The Vinoy’s newly renovated Veranda offers custom designed rocking chairs, a Vinoy tradition since opening in 1925, and a custom-designed bar. Guests may enjoy hand-crafted cocktails, wines and craft beer, as well as a light menu of Mediterranean inspired tapas and sharable plates, light entrees and desserts.

Guest Rooms

Guest rooms in the original hotel (not the expansion tower) have been renovated with a simple sophistication influenced by Florida’s coastal habitat. Commissioned custom art by painter Alicia LaChance adorns the walls. Colors of the sea – beiges and blues –are complemented by marble walk-in showers and coffee stations.

Spa & Dining

The newly remodeled Vinoy Spa is a peaceful respite with four treatment rooms and focuses on coastalinspired and plant-based therapies. Services include massages, facials, full-body therapies and nail and hair services. With a nod to holistic treatments, look for natural, organic and marine-infused products from manuka honey to sea algae.

The open-air restaurant Paul’s Landing is open to the public and remains a Vinoy favorite with its poolside tiki bar and views of the marina and downtown skyline. Coming this summer, Parasol, a Latin Americaninspired restaurant will offer tapas and cool beverages poolside. The final phase of renovations will welcome a fine dining restaurant off the Grand Lobby in the space formerly occupied by Marchand’s.

Time for a Summer Staycati

It’s summer in Florida, the perfect time for a getaway. Living in Tampa Bay, we are fortunate, indeed, to claim some of the nation’s best beaches in our own backyard. So why not plan a staycation right here? There are plenty of lodging options from fun-filled family resorts to romantic beach stays.

Florida residents can save by researching offers on resort and hotel web sites; look for packages and Florida resident discounts. Many hotels offer a discount if you pay in advance, or stay 3 or 4 nights and get one free. And remember that mid-week will always be a better deal than weekends. Here’s a look at some top local destinations for a summer staycation.

Sun and Sand

You can’t go wrong with Clearwater Beach for a family getaway. This is where the action is, with loads of fun things to do. But if you just want to park your beach towel for a couple days, you can’t beat the casual sophistication of the Sandpearl Resort and Opal Sands resorts. Lodging includes luxury condos, suites and exquisitely-appointed rooms. Both resorts have first-rate spas and restaurants – Seaguini at Opal Sands and Caretta’s at Sandpearl are the best on the beach.

A slate of summer activities encourages adults to sit with your toes in the sand and paint the sunset with local artist John Comer; spots are $65. Families can take advantage of Camp Ridley, a kids’ club open for ages 5 to 10. Both resorts are offering residents Sunshine State Staycations with up to 20% off rooms and daily breakfast for two. Get a fourth night free plus at $50 resort credit with the Savor Another Sunset special.

With the Pallavi Spa, business center and fitness center, fine dining, and an outdoor pool and hot tub, the Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach is a sophisticated getaway for adults who need to work and play. The resort is offering a Summer Sale-A-Bration with up to 25% off the best available rate when you stay two or more nights. Florida residents package will save you 25%, with valet parking and 10% off dining.

In St. Pete Beach, the Pink Palace, the legendary Don CeSar, is celebrating its 95th anniversary with a package that includes breakfast and a $95 resort credit. Romance is in the air at the Don, known as THE beach hotel to spot celebs and rock stars. Couples will love the Don’s dining options which

58 StPeteLifeMag.com July/August 2023 SPL TRAVEL

include the award-winning restaurant The Maritana Grille, the new Society Table and the Beacon Pool Bar. Don’t miss a nightcap at the newly renovated Art Deco-style Lobby Bar where Bogie and Bacall would fit right in.

Plaza Beach Resorts is a family owned and operated collection of three resorts – the Plaza Beach Hotel on the beachfront, and Bayview Plaza and Bay Palms on the intracoastal. These smaller properties are a bit more affordable than the large, luxury resorts and include comfortable, renovated one-bedroom suites. Guests get full beach access no matter which one they stay at. The Bay Palms and Bayview Plaza offer pet friendly rooms, too.

Small-Town Charm

If you want to chill for a romantic weekend or girlfriends getaway, head to the quiet small-town charm of Safety Harbor, tucked away on the west shore of Upper Tampa Bay. Great for long walks and casual dining, you will find a variety of restaurants, pubs, a wine bar and the venerable Whistle Stop (on the railroad tracks, of course) where the locals hang with music on the weekend. Just stroll up Main Street and you’re sure to find a place that will suit your fancy.

Where to stay? The Safety Harbor Resort and Spa is the only game in town with a full spa and daily fitness activities, two pools, and a great tiki bar. They offer a two-night Summer Staycation package that includes one spa service and breakfast/dinner per person. Rent a bicycle for a leisurely ride along Bayshore Drive or walk to beautiful Phillippe Park to look for the famous great horned owls.

Family Friendly

Kid-friendly resorts are everywhere along the Pinellas beaches.

TradeWinds Island Resorts and its sister property RumFish Beach Resort (formerly Guy Harvey Resort) are considered tops with families. Here you’ll find 40 acres of beachfront playground including an offshore floating water park, three-story water slide, zipline, parasailing, a teen lounge and night-time family activities. We love the new floating loungers ($30/hour) and the “aquabanas” that are floating cabanas ($300 for 3 hours) at TradeWinds. Add in a variety of restaurants (don’t miss the RumFish Grill with its 33,500-gallon indoor aquarium in the dining room) and bars and you’ll never need to leave the property. Florida resident rates are 20% off best available room rate, subject to availability.

Check out Winter the Dolphin’s Beach Club on Clearwater Beach, inspired by the story of Winter, the dolphin whose rescue was depicted in the movie “Dolphin Tale.” The hotel supports the Clearwater Marine Aquarium so guests receive 20% off on regular price admission tickets. Twice a week, aquarium staff visits the hotel to educate guests on their mission of rescue, rehabilitation and release of marine animals.

Postcard Inn on St. Pete Beach is a hangout for the active families with a great pool and games throughout including cornhole, beach volleyball, billiards, ping pong and more. A Savor the Shoreline Staycation package offers $200 off food and beverage for a stay of three nights or more Sunday through Thursday. They have a Stay 3 Nights, Get the 4th Free package, and Florida resident rates Sunday through Thursday, subject to availability.

You’ll find a staycation for all tastes, budgets and ages at Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach. To find a comprehensive listing of beach accommodations, check out www.visitstpeteclearwater.com

City Fertilizer Ban in Effect

Every year, the City of St. Petersburg requests that residents help protect the local environment and participate in a citywide fertilizer ban from June 1 to September 30. Increased rainfall in the summer months can cause nutrients from fertilizer to reach bodies of water and lead to environmental issues like algae blooms, fish kills, and water quality problems.

Here’s what you can do to help maintain the health of our waterways and marine life:

• Refrain from using fertilizer June 1 - September 30.

• Treat your lawn with a slow-release fertilizer in the spring or fertilizer-free micronutrients in the summer to keep your lawn happy all summer.

• Pick up any debris or vegetation near storm drains yearround to keep it from entering local waterways.

• Follow a no-mow zone six feet from any water body, helping to establish a protective barrier.

• Make sure your lawn maintenance/landscaper is certified through Pinellas County.

• Replace some or all of your lawn with Florida-friendly natives.

Regular physical exams put men in the driver’s seat when it comes to living a long, healthy life

Many men enjoy taking charge of their careers, their financial goals, their relationships, their fitness — even their grilling skills — with an eye toward their own vision of success in each of these areas. But so many neglect one crucial thing that could deeply impact every part of their lives: Getting regular physical exams.

“It’s a thing we all know we should do anyway, but clearly a lot of men are afraid of the results they’re going to get,” says Dr. Steven J. Seltzer, DO, a primary care physician at Bayfront Health Medical Group since 2019.

Past childhood, men typically don’t go to the doctor unless they’re suffering specific symptoms. “You see a big drop-off after pediatrics,” Dr. Seltzer says. Studies confirm that men are less likely than women to visit doctors regularly for checkups. Part of this may be that men don’t want to be seen as vulnerable or weak, Dr. Seltzer says. Yet this could be why men live shorter lives than women, he adds.

“One in five men don’t tell doctors the truth about their medical health even if they do go to the doctor,” he notes.

Even men who feel perfectly fine should still get regular checkups and bloodwork, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Seltzer’s recommendation is a comprehensive physical exam every other year when a man is in his 30s, and then annually starting

at age 40.

While the visits may seem like an inconvenience, sometimes they are the only way to detect problems such as high blood pressure, high blood sugar, or high cholesterol levels. Often, issues like these cause no noticeable symptoms in the early stages.

Generally, as men age, they start visiting their doctors more regularly.

“But by then, they’ve got medical issues that need to be treated,” Dr. Seltzer says, adding that in many cases, the severity of these problems could have been reduced with earlier and more frequent checkups.

But, he noted, many men — especially younger men — aren’t as open about discussing health issues with their loved ones as women tend to be. Dr. Seltzer believes this is due to cultural programming that discourages men from taking care of and tending to their physical bodies in the same way that women are encouraged to.

Dr. Seltzer, whose areas of focus include wellness and preventive care, listed several reasons why any man reading this should schedule his next physical exam now:

• Prostate cancer screening: The prostate-specific antigen or PSA test generally begins in your early 50s.

• Colon cancer screening: If you’re 45 or older, schedule that colonoscopy.

• Heart health: Cardiovascular disease can be detected via advanced

62 StPeteLifeMag.com July/August 2023 HEALTH & WELLNESS

cholesterol testing, blood pressure checks and other means.

• Mental health: Men suffer from anxiety and depression, too, but are less likely than women to discuss it or seek help for it. Yet “mental health is a huge part of what primary care doctors treat,” Dr. Seltzer says — probably 30% to 40%. “We’re able to start them on treatment and sometimes that can be enough, if they have a chemical imbalance or are just going through a rough run in life,” he says.

• Skin cancer screening: Regular skin checks are especially vital for men who have fair skin, who work outside, or who have a family history of skin cancer.

• Weight management: Excess weight can increase the risk for a long list of health problems, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and gallbladder disease.

• Erectile dysfunction issues: The cause could be psychological, but sometimes it’s due to physical issues like diabetes or blood flow problems.

This list is far from comprehensive, but simply shows a snapshot of facets of health that should be important to men. A thorough physical exam will include bloodwork, which varies depending on the patient’s age, health profile and medical history. But in general, a doctor will want to see cholesterol, thyroid and blood sugar levels, kidney and liver function, blood count and so forth.

Undoubtedly, the primary benefit of regular health checkups is to help ensure men live the longest, healthiest, happiest lives they possibly can. But another huge perk is financial: Catching problems early can reduce the amount of money you’ll spend on health care over your lifetime. Yet many men don’t see the value of regular prevention, Dr. Seltzer says.

“Doing regular preventive care in the long run is not only going to keep someone healthier, but it will also cheapen your medical costs,” he says. “If you wait until things get too bad, you’re going to spend a lot more.”

Dr. Seltzer, a primary care physician at Bayfront Health Medical Group, focuses on general adult primary care, wellness and preventative care.

Luxury in the Heartland

The Equestrian Hotel at Ocala’s World Equestrian Center promises a first-class adventure.

Ocala has long been known for several things — as the home of the famous Silver Springs glass bottom boats and as an internationally renowned center for breeding and training thoroughbred horses. An estimated 1,200 horse farms are found throughout the gently rolling hills of Marion County in North Central Florida, which is why it’s often referred to as “The Horse Capital of the World.”

It’s no surprise, then, that the Equestrian Hotel at the World Equestrian Center (WEC) is a destination that speaks to the luxury traveler with a fondness for anything equine. Situated on 378 acres of former ranchland, WEC is a world-class horse and event center, with the Equestrian Hotel the showpiece at its center.

A two-hour drive from Tampa/St. Petersburg, the WEC opened in 2020 (the hotel in 2021) as the vision of an Ohio couple, Ralph and Mary Roberts, who founded a World Equestrian Center in Wilmington, Ohio, and are respected longtime tourism developers in the Ocala area. The Ocala resort is the perfect weekend getaway

for couples or families who crave high-end lodging and amenities, a variety of dining options, and plenty of fresh air and relaxation.

But you don’t need to be an equestrian to appreciate all the World Equestrian Center has to offer.

From the moment you drive onto the grounds and see the grand white hotel spread before you, you know you are in for something special. Stepping into the white marble Grand Lobby seals the deal. High windows allow the sunlight to bathe opulent furnishings, crystal chandeliers, a five-foot floral display and exquisite oil paintings of stately horses and hunting dogs. A baby grand piano sits next to a two-story fireplace. Sofas and chairs in black leather and velvet are piled with pillows trimmed in gold. Bronze horse sculptures and lamps beg to be admired.

Rooms and suites are not so lavish, but tasteful and spacious, with equestrian touches from the carpet design to the gold bit handles

on the dressers. Most of the rooms look down on the Grand Arena, giving guests a free view of any horse show or competition that happens to be booked.

Getting Around

Your best bet is to rent a golf cart so you can explore, but take a map. The resort is massive with five indoor arenas and 16 outdoor show arenas. Guests are free to wander and visit any horse shows or events going on; most of them are free. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch a bit of a training session with a young thoroughbred, a dressage show or a kennel club dog show.

If you’re looking for a trail ride, you’ll need to go elsewhere. This is a full-service training and event center, so there are no public rentals or trails. Concrete climatecontrolled stable barns can accommodate nearly 3,000 horses, complete with showers, matted floors and individual ceiling fans for each stall.

On our visit, we enjoyed the opportunity to wander the beautiful grounds in our cart – trails go everywhere making it easy to visit an arena for a horse show or stop in at one of the various eateries on premises. A picturesque chapel on the grounds is worth a stop and even holds services on Sundays. On your cart ride, you can also find an RV park, an emergency care facility, a veterinary hospital operated by the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine that specializes in horse and small animal care, and a new 400-room suite-like hotel being constructed intended to be moderately priced for extended stays. It’s slated for an opening in 2024.

There are some 30 fine boutiques to keep you busy, too, especially if you’re in the market for some fancy Western boots and leather goods, home furnishings for the upscale country lifestyle, a custom designed saddle, or some intricate gold and diamond horseshoe cuff links.

A large pool adjacent to the hotel will keep kids busy and a number of nearby attractions in the Ocala area are perfect for day trips. One day, we visited the beautiful Silver Springs State Park just 20 minutes away where the famous glass bottom boats still delight visitors as they glide over the crystal clear spring. This summer, the resort is promoting a WEC Great Florida Adventure Package with two tickets to The Canyons Zip Line and Adventure Park, about 15 minutes away, plus a $50 property credit.

Culinary Adventure

A highlight of our weekend stay was dining in the elegant Stirrups restaurant in the Equestrian Hotel. While dinners here are known to

be five-star affairs, we indulged in a Sunday Brunch experience that was beyond amazing. From the attentive service to the perfectly prepared cuisine, we felt like royalty. And it’s no wonder, as we were seated in a palatial dining room with plush white furnishings, high ceilings with crystal chandeliers, and surrounded by a collection of gold-framed oil paintings of stately hunting dogs. From our table we could view the Grand Arena where a photographer was snapping photos of a winning show horse, a rider astride sporting a floral garland around her neck. All at my table agreed that we had found the most divine Bloody Mary in the universe.

In addition to Stirrups, more casual fare and a lively crowd on weekend nights can be found at the Yellow Pony Pub on the hotel’s main floor. Here you can mosey up to a saddle at the bar, or sit at a regular table. More dining options can be found on the grounds of the resort, where families can grab a pizza at Viola & Dot’s Italian Kitchen & Pizzeria, munch burritos and tacos at Filo’s Mexican Cantina, or enjoy burgers and fries at Ralph’s Burger & Sandwich Shop.

Time to Indulge

A weekend stay at WEC demands a bit of pampering at the luxurious Calluna Spa in the hotel. I reveled in the peaceful bliss, where I drifted away to gentle music and the soft caressing hands of my esthetician. An extensive menu of massages, facials, manicures, pedicures and wellness packages are ready to bring you a slice of nirvana, too, like the Milk & Honey Nourishing Wrap with a whipped honey and fine sea salt scrub or the Steamed Lavender Milk Pedicure. Note to self: Book here for my next Girlfriends Getaway.

Don’t be surprised to hear accents from around the world during your stay — race horse owners and athletes from around the globe are discovering the WEC.

“During the winter we have a number of international horse owners who stay for six or eight weeks at a time,” said Justin Garner, Director of Hotel and Hospitality Operations, as he toured me around the grounds in a golf cart. “They fly in with their horses from Saudi Arabia and South America to train. It’s really an exciting time to be here and watch them.”

IF YOU GO

For more information on the World Equestrian Center, go to worldequestriancenter.com/ocala-fl/ or call (352) 414-7900. Room rates start at $330, plus taxes, for Florida residents.

November

3-5 join celebrated chefs at the 3rd annual Ocala Food & Wine festival at WEC as they serve up dishes paired with wines, beers and cocktails. Enjoy tastings, demonstrations, intimate dinners with celebrity chefs and more as you experience the magnificent resort. A bi-monthly Stirrups Wine Series is an exclusive wine and food tasting on the veranda with live music. The next one is September 22 with a Pacific Northwest theme.

With all the arenas, plus two state-of-the-art airconditioned expo centers, WEC is booking events from horse shows and dog shows to trade shows and festivals. Check the Event Calendar online if you’re looking to add some entertainment to your weekend visit. We were there in May for a lively Kentucky Derby weekend when WEC held an outdoor Derby Hat Party on the veranda, and the Festivals of Speed luxury and classic car show was added entertainment.

Summer Dresses With Summer Cocktails

Match your outfit to your chosen drink and watch heads turn.

Ah, the marvelous Florida summer, with its boundless warmth, skin friendly moisture, outstanding white beaches, and exciting boating. Some may have the desire to escape it, but some may just enjoy it and be excited about glorious afternoons on a cool patio with a delicious cocktail in hand.

It is not a secret that a lightweight, flowy, colorful summer dress is one of the best and easiest ways to beat the heat. Slip it on, add shiny jewels and a large brim hat, and who could possibly deny your charm and style? For a relaxing afternoon, have a cocktail resembling your dress, the blue summer sky is your limit in choices.

A long, maxi with full skirt, gently swiping the floor with a tranquil, sexy swoosh, richly draping over your legs and exposing your shoulders with long straps going deep down your back from a fitted bodice is always a dramatic alternative to your stylish summer dress. The print must be as invigorating as the dress, with eye-catching colors and an appropriate tropical pattern. Imagine holding in your hand a lovely crystal glass, with the cocktail resembling your dress. A refreshingly ice cold lime margarita, for example, made with silver tequila, Cointreau, freshly squeezed lime juice, and Himalayan pink salt crystals on the rim. Yum!

Who wouldn’t like comfort combined with style? In that case, a short, fitted dress with lush chiffon overlay will be a flawless solution. That approach will easily take you from the beach to the evening, and on any boat journey.

Nature inspired colors in strong, warm orange and soft shades of pink, beige and gray will stunningly stand out on the blue waters and a white boat interior. Long, gentle layers over your arms will be the ideal protection from the sun, offering at the same time a light, cooling breeze through your fabulous dress.

How about a satisfying chilled gin mimosa to go along with this remarkable look? Or intriguingly seductive Sex on the Beach?

Sea breeze is not only a circulation of warm land air and cooler air from over the sea, it is also a stunning color, exceptionally adequate for the season. A complex, tropical turquoise aqua with an aquamarine undertone, it is a musthave in a summer wardrobe. A loosely fitted on the top dress, softly sliding over one shoulder reminds me of that refreshing and mysterious sea breeze. The contrastingly fitted bottom should be longer, with a seductive slit over your thigh and short underskirt. A nearly intangible chorus of feminine sensuality with a sophisticated and chic style!

Coolest ever, and as electrifying as it appears, a Hpnotiq cocktail is a welcome pairing to that sensual look and color. Pour Hpnotiq in a martini glass, followed by an equal part of your favorite white wine and top it with a splash of ginger ale. Now it’s time to enjoy our fabulous paradise that others are longing for. Summer cheers!

Prepare Your Pets, Make a Plan for Storm Season Pet Tales

The Tampa Bay area loves baseball, football, hockey and soccer season — hurricane season not so much. Expert indicators predict the 2022 hurricane season to have “above average” activity — including nine hurricaneforce storms and four major hurricanes. The season continues through November 30. The time for you, your family and pets to be prepared is now.

At SPCA Tampa Bay we’ve had recent experience at our pet hospital in St. Petersburg and For-All shelter in Largo keeping our animals safe from Hurricane Ian and helping our partners in the panhandle when they were impacted by storms. What helped us was a plan to keep our animals and our team safe and healthy.

Keep your family and pets safe by knowing what to do in the event of an emergency and make a plan now. There are very few emergency shelters that accept pets and their owners, and they are never large or comfortable. You and your pets will handle the stress of an evacuation far better if you find petfriendly hotels and motels, or can stay with friends or family.

Here are some tips to help you prepare for a potential storm:

• Know your flood and evacuation zones. In Pinellas County, go to PinellasCounty.org to check the flood and evacuation zones near you.

• Plan where you’d go if an evacuation is necessary or ordered. Pre-registration is required to stay in a pet-friendly emergency shelter - call Pinellas County at (727) 582-2150 or download the registration form on the Pinellas County website and return it to Pinellas County Animal Services. The Pinellas County School Board and Pinellas County government provide the pet friendly shelter locations at Largo and Gibbs High Schools.

• Never leave your pets alone if you have to evacuate. You won’t be able to get back to them due to storm surge or flood damage. Your pets may end up being left alone for hours or days depending on severe weather, storm damage, downed power lines, road closures or other poor conditions. Wind or rain damage to your home and yard could also put your pets at risk for injury or escape in your absence.

• Pack at least 3-5 days’ worth of supplies. Remember to bring essential items with you like your pets’ food and medications, bottled water, and their medical and shot records, as well as familiar items like a favorite toy or blanket.

• Make sure your pet’s collar has the identification tag on it and that your contact information on your pet’s microchip and tag are up-to-date. If you don’t know how to update your pet’s microchip, ask your veterinarian or the shelter where you adopted your pet to help you.

Start planning now. Don’t wait for another storm to hit to figure out your plan for hurricane season.

Contact SPCA Tampa Bay at (727) 586-3591 or spcatampabay.org for help and links to organizations to assist you in figuring out the best plan for your family.

Check out SPCA Tampa Bay’s weekly podcast Animal Tales for updated community information and news concerning pet safety, local happenings, pet health care, traveling with pets, hurricane preparedness and more. You Won’t Find Best Burgers in St. Pete with AI, Trust Me

I asked ChatGPT to write a story about the best burgers in St. Petersburg and it egregiously omitted two of our classic eateries and listed a place that closed in 2016. It just goes to show you we have so many restaurants serving great burgers that even artificial intelligence can’t capture them all.

In an issue devoted to the Best of St. Petersburg, I thought I would offer my take on who serves the best burgers in town. After all, my taste buds are far from artificial. Here are my top picks:

Pasadena Bar & Grill, 796 Pasadena Ave. S: Don’t out yourself as a newcomer by entering through the front door of this friendly neighborhood bar. The regulars park in the back and stroll in through the back like they’ve dined here all their lives. Maybe some have called the bar home for decades. The amicable banter and big laughs signal a deep camaraderie.

Adding to the simple charm is a burger small on frills but big on taste and freshness. Served on a paper plate is a meaty patty sandwiched between two super soft hamburger buns. It was

cooked perfectly and accented with a slice of cheese and basic sides: lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and for the bold, a jalapeno pepper. Its $8 price tag (add cheese for 75 cents, bacon for $1) makes it one of the best bargains in St. Petersburg.

My friends Bob and Rachael, longtime St. Petersburg natives, introduced me to this fine establishment and I told them I would pick up the tab only if the burger was delicious. Not only did I pay, but I left a big tip.

The Chattaway, 358 22nd Ave. S: How ChatGPT missed this legendary restaurant remains a mystery because I and a thousand other people have filled the internet with raves for their cheeseburger. Established in 1951, the outdoor tropical garden setting takes you back to yesteryear Florida.

Although the menu includes a veggie burger and a Beyond burger, the Chattaway generally plays it straight, serving its Original Cheese Chattaburger with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, ketchup, mustard and mayo. Trust me when I tell you, fancy addons are not needed.

74 StPeteLifeMag.com July/August 2023
SPL LIVING

The biggest tribute I can pay to The Chattaway? It’s where I take visitors when I really want to impress them with good eats and St. Petersburg ambience.

Engine No. 9, 56 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.: Before I boast about the burgers, a bit of news. Engine No. 9 is not closing. Repeat. It’s not closing. Rumors swirled when a developer bought the property, but the restaurant will remain intact as the developer builds around it.

This is cause for celebration because Engine No. 9 touts itself as the best burger place in all of St. Petersburg. It recently made Yelp’s Top 100 Burgers in America list and for what it’s worth, it drew raves from ChatGPT. I’m not one to argue the assessments.

On a recent visit, I worshiped the Demi-God, an exquisite combination of burger, cheddar, Swiss, sauteed mushrooms and caramelized onions. My wife got the Black N’ Blue, which made sure you got the full flavor with a slice of blue cheese and blue cheese crumbs. There are plenty of other burger options, including The 504, which comes replete with peanut butter and Apple smoked bacon.

The Avenue, 330 First Ave. S.: In my latter years at the Tampa Bay Times, this proved to be my go-to spot. I couldn’t stay away from

The Avenue’s uniquely flavored burgers and Cajun fries.

I’m no longer a regular, and maybe that’s why two of my favorite burgers no longer appear on the menu. A cheesy blueberry compote concoction and a Jamaican-inspire Rasta Burger are missing even though they proved irresistible back in the day. Still, The Avenue comes up in any conversation about the city’s best burgers, so I’ll set aside my personal regrets.

Other worthy stops: El Cap (3500 4th St.), which opened in the 1960s, is an iconic spot now under new ownership but still going strong. The Burg Bar, (1752 Central Ave.) is casual, laid back and offers burger specials on Monday. Ted Peters (1350 Pasadena Ave. S) is best known for smoked fish, but don’t sleep on its jumbo cheeseburger. Ditto for The Dewey (109 8th Ave., St. Pete Beach), which rightfully touts its beach-inspired cuisine but also has a wagyu burger with truffled Grafton cheddar, Neuske bacon and arugula.

Reach out if you want to be included on next year’s list. I’m always up for a good burger.

Is Your Home Ready for Hurricane Season? Here’s What to Do Now

Nothing is worse than trying to deal with all of life’s issues and then throwing in a visit from a hurricane. Get ahead of the game and start preparing NOW! If you wait until a storm is imminent, you will not be able to get everything done before you need to leave and/or before the storm hits.

Things you can do now on your property, before the peak of hurricane season.

Home Exterior

• Walk the perimeter of your lot, working your way in toward your house. Look for dead trees and limbs. Have these cut down or trimmed as soon as possible. They become deadly, devastating missiles during high winds.

• Check your gutters and downspouts to make sure none are loose. Tighten if they are.

• Check your roof to make sure you do not have any loose shingles or tiles or that you might have a problem area that might be the cause of a leak during heavy, prolonged rain. Loose items, especially tiles, cause a lot of damage to your and your neighbors’ houses. (Call a licensed roofing company if you don’t like climbing ladders.)

• Check fencing; make sure there are no loose panels and that the gates are properly secured to the post structure.

• Check around all windows and doors to see if there any gaps where wind-driven rain might penetrate. Caulk as needed. Replace any broken or damaged ones; consider getting Impact Resistant (IR) replacements or replacing all in your house with IR’s.

• Check awnings and shutters, make sure they are not loose or rusted where they could easily become dislodged during high winds. Repair as needed.

• If you have a garage door and it is not reinforced for high winds, call a reputable garage door company and have them reinforce your door or install a new one to meet the wind codes for your area. This is one of the weakest parts of your home’s envelope.

• If you have roll-down shutters that protect your windows and doors, test them to make sure they are in full operational mode. Fully close and open every one of them.

Home Interior

• Walk from room-to-room with a video camera or camera, recording all personal items in each room, including closets and garage. Make a copy, keeping it in your getaway bag. I suggest sending one to a relative that lives in an area not prone to hurricanes.

• Identify a water-proof container that you can easily locate in a hurry. Put all valuable documents such as insurance papers, wills, financials and of course, family and friend photos.

• Identify a large bag/suitcase that you can easily locate when in a hurry. This becomes your GETAWAY BAG. It would be wise to go ahead and stock it with batteries, flashlights and several waterproof zip-lock bags. You can pack your other items when a storm is predicted to hit your area within one week.

If a Storm is Approaching

Once you have determined that you need to leave your house and/ or that a storm is heading your way, there are several things you can do in your yard and around the house interior and exterior to help reduce damage to your own property and to your neighbors.

• Look for dead trees and limbs once again. You may need to remove those yourself at this point since most tree companies are either booked solid or making their own preparations to evacuate.

76 StPeteLifeMag.com July/August 2023 SPL LIVING

• Decorative landscaping items such as small rocks, pebbles, lighting, gnomes and bird feeders/baths can also become missiles. Gather all of these and put in garage, closet or storage. For rocks, pebbles or other landscaping materials you might not be able to easily remove, stake down a landscape cloth (readily available at big box hardware) over these areas. Be sure to make the material taunt and that all stake connections are secure. This will keep those materials from disappearing in high winds and keep them from becoming missiles.

• Remove any signs, such as real estate or contractor signs and all lawn furniture. If you do not have room for lawn furniture inside, tightly secure them with rope or chains to a sturdy tree in your yard. If you do not have a tree but do have a pool, sink your furniture in the pool, assuming the furniture is indeed waterproof!

• Check gutters one last time. It’s probably too late to worry about the roof unless you can make repairs quickly yourself; hence the reason to check things out now. Check fencing and gates one last time

If you plan to leave

Fill your vehicle(s) fuel tank; be mindful that charging stations for electric vehicles might be out of commission for an extended time. Pack two weeks of lightweight clothing per person.

Grab your getaway bag; check for batteries, flashlights and

waterproof baggies. Add a lot of bottled water, a battery operated portable radio, toiletries, feminine products and games for children (with plenty of batteries). Assume you may be somewhere without power for two weeks.

Grab your waterproof container with important docs., adding other documents that you deem not replaceable (stock certificates, vehicle titles, etc.) If you are in an area prone to flooding, put your furniture on blocks a couple of feet off the floor. Remove all items from the floor, stacking in closets as high as possible. This is in case the water rises enough to enter your home. (This will not do much good if a direct hit of a Cat 3 or higher occurs.)

If you plan to stay

Keep an eye on weather reports, if the storm forecast shows your area as a high probability, ask yourself, is it worth risking your life and lives of your family members? You should seriously consider leaving.

Have two weeks’ worth of non-perishable food and water on-hand. If not, evacuate.

Honda CR-V Hybrid Scores As a Spacious, Enjoyable Ride

CR-V AWD HYBRID (SPORT TOURING)

Tires: 235/55 R19

Wheelbase: 106.3 inches

Length: 184.8 inches

Width: 73.5 inches

Height: 66.5 inches

Weight: 3,616 pounds

Fuel capacity: 14 gallons

City: 40 mpg

Highway: 34 mpg

Base price: $39,100

Web site: www.honda.com

It’s an all-new CR-V (Comfortable Runabout Vehicle), well almost. Never known to rest on their laurels, engineers at the Japanese carmaker have overhauled the popular and best-selling compact SUV. Trust us, the changes are all for the better.

Offered as a front-wheel or all-wheel drive (which was our test drive), the sixth-generation 2023 Honda CR-V is equipped with a 2.0-liter direct-injection, 4-cylinder engine that develops 204 horsepower and 247 pounds-feet of torque. Alongside sit two electric motors in the hybrid version. Power is put to the road via a continuous variable transmission. The retuned independent MacPherson strut front and a multilink rear suspension isolates occupants from road noise and rough bumps. And the electric power rack-and-pinion steering has a solid and communicative feel, making the SUV easy to place at sharp curves. Also, additional sound-damping materials hold wind/road noise, vibration and harshness to a minimum. Believe it or not, now you can tow up to 1,500 pounds in this SUV.

With wheelbase up by 1.6, length by 2.7 and 0.4 inches wider, the CR-V styling appears even more aggressive and sleeker than its predecessor. Boasting a broader stance and sleek roofline, the long hood meets a large upright mesh grille with active shutters and a gloss-black insert. Vertical LED tail lamps and polished stainlesssteel exhaust tips take up the rear. The 60/40 seatback is easy to fold. Just pull the small levers located near the tailgate and you have a flat seat to haul cargo.

Bins and cubbies are scattered throughout. Cargo space with the second row down is a vast 76.5 cubic feet while passenger volume is also worthy at 103.5 cubic feet. We liked the new, pleasant look

of the metal honeycomb mesh that stretches across the dash, hiding silver-accented air vents.

Save fuel by switching to econ from normal mode (snow and sport also available). Other standard conveniences include dual auto a/c, 9-inch infotainment screen, leather on seats, shifter and the tilt/telescopic steering column, sunglass holder, 10-way heated driver and four-way front-passenger power seats, hands-free power tailgate and moon roof, rear console air vents, 12-speaker Bose audio, wire phone charger, push-button start and a driver information center.

Dual front, side and knee airbags, side curtain airbag with rollover system, vehicle stability assist, traction control, four-wheel antilock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, threepoint seatbelts, front/rear crumple zones, blind-spot and rear cross traffic monitor, front-seat active head restraints, tire pressure monitor system and daytime running lights come at no extra cost. Honda Sensing gets you front sensor camera/radar, traffic jam assist, collision mitigation brakes, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and forward collision and lane departure warnings.

The car-like CR-V boasts a roomy and practical cabin. And even the hybrid power train adds liveliness and fun to the ride. Besides, the fuel-efficient SUV (averaging almost 39 mpg in combined driving for us) comes with Honda’s solid reputation for reliability and durability. No wonder it’s called a Comfortable Runabout Vehicle!
