WELCOME TO SPL Valerie Bogle

This holiday season I am thankful for the people around me that enrich my life daily. I’m grateful to be doing what I love in this amazing Burg. My wish for you? It’s easy to get caught up in the seasonal stress, so remember to be grateful for what you we have. Really, for most of us, we don’t have to look further than our family, friends and pets. Be thankful daily for the little things (no traffic jams on the way to work). Most importantly, let’s practice daily - not random - acts of kindness for those who are less fortunate. Our Kindness News can help you do good...and doing good feels pretty great. Happy holidays from all of us and see you in 2018 with the next issue!

Our Holiday Wish For You

“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart. Wishing you happiness.” - Helen Keller

Some say New Year’s Day is everyone’s birthday and I certainly feel that way. After bubbly and lucky foods on New Year’s Eve (12 grapes peeled, like they do in Spain), I wake up refreshed and renewed. My 2018’s motto? “If you stumble, make it part of the dance.”

What will I be doing for Auld Lang Syne? My favorite New Year’s Day was sailing on the Sans Souci accompanied by an extremely friendly San Diego whale. This year, DTSP will host my whale of a tale for 2018 as I enjoy the friends and restaurants I’ve come to know and love while researching and writing this magazine. And what’s not to love about this issue, where we celebrate the joy of giving in new ways. In this month, you’ll find curated gifts of kindness, learning and experiences. We explore St. Pete’s entrepreneurial spirit and celebrate the culinary and spirited bounty of the season. We’re grateful for your stories and support. Wishing you peace on earth with a side of sugarplums, health and happiness.

Break-Through TREATMENT FOR THE FACE... ALL Patient photos courtesy of Dr. G. Joseph Fitzgerald

LIFT WITH NON-SURGICAL PDO

Threads

PureLife Medi-Spa has added PDO Threads to its menu of services. The new PDO absorbable Thread Lift procedure safely and instantly lifts up loose skin on the face and neck with minimal downtime. For ten years, the PDO absorbable thread lift has been performed in Asia and Europe. In addition to being safe, it is one of the most popular “lift” treatments. NovaThreads differs from other thread lifting alternatives because they are made from absorbable PDO sutures and can be reversed and removed − unlike other threads.

Restore the V-Shape

NovaThreads is one the most effective ways to lift loose skin without surgery, and to regain that natural, beautiful V-Shape of the face. As we age, gravity takes a toll on our bodies − most notably in the face. You may notice it around the eyebrows, areas AFTER BEFORE around the eyes, cheeks, jowls and neck. The result? A longer, more square-shaped and older-looking face as we lose our youthful V-Shaped face. PDO Threads actually restore the V-Shape. The lower third of the face can be challenging when treating with wrinkle relaxers or dermal fillers. The treatment does not give the look of too much added volume that sometimes occurs with fillers.

How Does it Work?

PDO Threads are hypodermic needles preloaded with a synthetic PDO absorbable suture that stimulates collagen production and the skin structure. FDA approved, PDO (polydioxanone) sutures are commonly used to perform cardiac surgery. It’s the safest material that can be used in the body. Your skin fully absorbs the Thread within four to six months, without leaving any scar tissue. Commonly called the “lunch time facelift” in Europe, the procedure takes a short time, with results lasting 12 to 15 months. No cuts or incisions, and the procedure is purely injection based much like other fillers.

Is THE PROCEDURE SAFE? The procedure is typically very safe, however no procedure is without risk. PDO thread therapy is a very safe procedure and complications are extremely rare. Minor complications may include temporary swelling and bruising. Patients may feel slight tightness or a pulling sensation following the treatment which subsides over a few weeks.

BEFORE

AFTER

BEFORE

AFTER

Two weeks post procedure. Patient has not received any other treatments. Fullness is a result of lifting the displaced tissue.

YOU MAY BE A CANDIDATE FOR PDO THREADS IF YOU: · Have signs of aging and sagging and need just a lift · Are starting to see some droopiness in the face and neck · Have experienced a relapse from a previous plastic surgery procedure such as a facelift or neck lift · Do not wish to undergo a surgical facelift or neck lift for various reasons such as cost and recovery time

Keep St. Pete Local BY NANETTE WISER

Think global, shop local is what entrepreneur Olga Bof wants you to think this season…actually all year round. She and I met when we were both writing for I Love The Burg a few years ago. Her Localista column discovered DTSP’s shops and cool spots, way before it was the hot destination it is now.

Inkwood Books were with Olga at a book convention in Washington D.C. and already had started the IBA in Tampa. Carla lived in St. Pete and convinced Olga to be a card-carrying member and launch one downtown. The Globe Coffee Lounge was a hub for indie shop-wanna be owners, and Olga met a woman opening Sweet Cheeks Candy Bar and Beauty Shop who came up with the t-shirt, while tattoo artist Michael Keller came up with the Keep St. Pete Local logo. Manny from Daddy Kool Records hopped on the project, and the rest is history. Olga grew up in a tight knit family and neighborhood that inspired her to create the same business ambiance here. “I’m Cuban from Miami, I came to St. Pete from London where I lived for a decade. When I got here, I saw the trend towards cookie cutter and strip center malls that were replacing local shops. Where I grew up in Little Havana, local shop owners were my family and from there to London, I have shopped small indie boutiques.”

She knows first hand the struggles of starting and maintaining an indie business. “Originally, I wanted to open a book and eco toy shop, I did the research and realized that battling Amazon and the book chains could be daunting without support” says Olga. “I found out about The Independent Business Alliance which supported local businesses in other cities, and wanted to bring the concept here to St. Pete.” The Independent Business Alliance (IBA), Keep Saint Petersburg Local, was launched on November 19, 2011 (known as America Unchained Day) by a group of local, independent business owners and concerned citizens who recognize and appreciate the unique character of the Saint Petersburg community. Olga credits the owner of Inkwood Books and the Globe Coffee Lounge for supporting the idea and local shop owners. Carla and Leslie, co-owners of

businesses and service providers; which helps grow other businesses, as well as strengthen Saint Petersburg’s economy. Investing in community is a side-benefit of the Keep St. Pete Local movement. “Locally-owned, independent businesses are the first to donate to causes that are close to our hearts and they do so at more than twice the rate of national chains” says Olga. Events are whimsical and inventive. They started with National Hugging day, moved on to Nova space local shop events, just hosted WestFest at freeFall on Central Avenue and now are focused on Feburary’s 5th Annual Localtopia in Williams Park. “20,000 people attended last year,” says Olga. As a mom to an eight year old running a grassroots non-profit, Olga is more Wonder Woman than most. Currently, keep St. Pete Local has 650 members (shops, restaurants, breweries, service providers) and going strong. Other events include: #MeetStPete, featuring panels & workshops led by some of our city’s favorite local business owners + socials. The series provides unique opportunities to meet, learn from and really connect with existing & aspiring local business owners; as well as other dreamers, doers, shakers and makers.

It’s smart business too. Significantly more money re-circulates locally when purchases are made with locally-owned, independent businesses. This “multiplier” is due in part to locally-owned businesses purchasing more often from other local

Olga is a St. Pete aficiando, enjoying Craftsman House, Banyan Café, Black Crow, The Mill, and her greater Woodlawn neighborhood. keepsaintpetersburglocal.org

Still Spreading The News BY CINDY COCKBURN

St. Pete is booming and this makes for one very happy Old Northeast resident named Joni James. She has been the CEO for the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership since 2015. This nonprofit, business-member group is dedicated to project-based economic development and facilitated the recent creations of the Warehouse Arts and Innovation Districts. Their goal is to work on projects that offer sustainable long-term job growth.

Is this a dream job too? “It’s very rewarding! I fell in love with this city over 20 years ago. We thought the waterfront was beautiful and really set St. Pete apart from other Florida cities.” A North Carolina native, Joni is a graduate of Wake Forest University and the University of Florida. She and her husband, Mark Howerton have called Florida home since 1997 and St. Petersburg, since 2007. They have a young daughter and a dog named Cleo that loves our parks. Joni spent 26 years as newspaper journalist before becoming the CEO and has found her years covering all forms of government and business across five states – including eight years in Tallahassee during Gov. Jeb Bush’s tenure – a good foundation for what she does now: leveraging public and private interests to make investments for St. Petersburg’s future. That’s included everything from exploring changing relationships with Cuba to investigating whether sewage treatment tanks could be converted to a fish farm. Before switching careers, Joni served seven years as the Tampa Bay Times’ deputy editor of editorials and was a finalist for both the Pulitzer Prize and the Scripps-Howard Walker Stone Award.

What is her favorite place to visit as a family? “We really enjoy strolling our neighborhood and down Beach Drive to the Saturday Market.”

A Fish Tale

What’s her passion? “BASEBALL! We are huge RAYS fans and go to about 15 games a year.” One of her fondest memories is riding a tandem with her husband to the 2008 World Series at Tropicana Field. They also took her daughter to her first game at nine days old. “We were playing the Cleveland Indians and won 4 to 3.” Where can you be found when off duty? “We are raising a daughter who is a dancer, so the YMCA is an amazing resource for St. Pete, especially the dance program which uses the American Ballet Theatre curriculum. We really appreciate the values she’s learning there and all that the Y does for the community – including subsidizing some students who wouldn’t otherwise have a chance to explore dance.” Her daughter takes class five days a week. What is your holiday tradition? “We held a Thanksgiving picnic in Flora Wylie Park one year because we were renovating our house and had a relative coming but had no where to have the big meal. It was such a fantastic, lazy way to spend the day we’ve never gone back. We set up chairs and tables, smoke a turkey and invite friends to join us. Some years it’s 30 people, sometimes just about a dozen. It’s a wonderful afternoon that feels very Florida. We can’t resist texting images to our families further north.”

What is she most excited about for the future? The St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership’s Looper Trolley is set to double its service hours next year and streamline its route. “With the City’s and PSTA’s help, this is going to be a great improvement for tourism but also residents and employees downtown.”

With a secret passion for marine science, Tampa Bay Orthopaedic Specialists’ marketing director Robin Perlman had an epiphany when her work with a BP oil spill-related client paid off a tidy sum. “I wanted to do something good for ocean sustainability, so I went to USF’s College of Marine Sciences and brainstormed with Director of Development Howard Rutherford.” No stranger to challenges (she just hiked solo through the bear-infested mountains of North Carolina), she created a program to benefit the Florida Institute of Oceanography (FIO) and their lionfish research program by organizing a Lionfish Dinner at the Treasure Island Yacht Club in October. Philip A. Kramer, Ph.D and Director of FIO, who recently moved to St. Pete and is an expert on lionfish, discussed his work. “Dr. Kramer is involved with this and other marine research programs, looking for solutions do deal with sea level rise, coral reef demise, harmful algae blooms, water quality and more.” With help, Perlman established funds for marine science students to bring their research ideas to fruition. Perlman’s thrilled to be involved with the College of Marine Science and FIO while channeling her inner Cousteau. “One person can make a difference,” she advises. “Go find your passion and pay it forward.”

Dali & Schiaparelli Preview Weekend Chef Marty Blitz of Mise En Place in Tampa, Florida catered the event with a French twist menu and wine/champagne pairings will be provided by JCB Wines (Jean Charles Boisset). The events were fun and festive with a touch of shocking pink. Friday’s Luncheon and Sunday’s

Champagne Brunch were sophisticatedly light and airy casual affairs. Saturday night’s black-tie Fashion Show & Exhibition Opening Gala was elegant and exciting: guests sipped champagne as the fashion show took place in the Tom and Mary James Family Wing among the permanent collection of Dalí works where models posed against a backdrop of Salvador Dalí’s masterworks. Dalí Museum and Schiaparelli leaders performed a ceremonial ribbon cutting to officially open the special exhibition in the Hough Gallery allowing patrons to view the exhibit for the first time, followed by a French-inspired dinner then dessert and dancing in the Avant-garden. The Dali exhibition runs through Jan. 14 and is presented in collaboration with Schiaparelli Paris and features haute couture gowns and accessories, jewelry,

paintings, drawings, objects and photos, as well as new designs by Bertrand Guyon for Maison Schiaparelli. This is the first exhibition dedicated to the creative relationship and works of Elsa Schiaparelli and Salvador Dali – friends and collaborators that set Paris and the world ablaze with their groundbreaking visions.

WADA Wonderful!

St. Pete’s art scene continues to thrive as the community driven art initiative becomes a reality with the ribbon cutting event Oct. 28. A project of the Warehouse Arts District

We have some of the best mural artists and an artistic vibe that’s worth seeing, and more than that, buying! WHERE TO SHOP StPeteArtsAlliance.org and enjoy the second Saturday ArtWalk when you are looking for seasonal swag that will a-muse your giftees and expand your cultural horizons. 98° LET IT SNOW is HOT! BY NANETTE WISER We love a good boy band, and the Lachey brothers Nick and Drew make this season merry and bright when their band lights up The Mahaffey Dec. 8. They will perform songs from their new holiday album as well as fan favorites as part of their 31-city tour with band members Jeff Timmons and Justin Jeffre. SPL spoke with Drew from his Los Angeles home about the upcoming tour that winds up in Vegas, then home for the holidays with family. “We’re excited to be back on the road, celebrating our 20th anniversary,” says Drew. “We’re proud of the new CD, It has a little bit of something for everyone, even more classic hymns done acapella, strong on harmony and vocals.” Although Drew’s been known to wear an ugly sweater or two, this tour comes with a stylist (“thank heavens”) for the bro-show that’s easy on the eyes and inspiring for the hearts. SPL: What are your musical influences? DL: I grew up listening to Manhattan Transfer, and once we got into acapella singing, that band, Stevie Wonder and Boyz to Men affected us and changed and shaped our lives. SPL: What song did you most want to see on this album: DL: “Little Saint Nick,” the cheery 1963 Beach Boys bop. You don’t hear a ton of people covering that one. It’s an up-tempo song, it’s fun, and it allows us to show off our harmonies. SPL: What does Christmas mean to you? DL: Time with family. No matter what your religious background, the holiday season symbolizes being together and celebrating. That’s why we wrote Season of Love. There’s a lot of divisiveness between groups of people, so we wanted to put out a message of hope and make the feeling of the holiday spirit of being neighborly and cordial last year round. SPL: Who would you like most to perform with? DL: So far, we’ve been lucky to perform with Stevie Wonder, Mariah Carey but

34

StPeteLifeMag.com

November/December 2017

I’m a huge Sinatra fan so that would have been great and with all the young talent out there, Taylor Swift would be awesome. SPL: What were your and Nick’s holiday traditions growing up? DL: There was no shortage of love, presents and good food! Attending Christmas Eve midnight service with my grandparents, then waking up early. We were allowed to open a stocking only before everyone woke up, so we would head downstairs and after checking out the knick knacks we’d stuff our face with candy. After gifts, we’d head over to a big Christmas celebration with my mom’s side in the morning and in the afternoon with dad. My granny used to make brown bread with raison baked in a tin can, just delicious. SPL: What was your favorite gift? DL: My favorite gift was Return to The Jedi and my granny and gramps got me Ewok Village with the treehouse and the sword, just the greatest thing in the history of mankind. SPL: What will you do when you finish up in Vegas Dec. 23? DL: Hopefully get some sleep and head home so I can spend Christmas morning with my kids and my wife. That gives me energy and strength through the whole rest of the year. My wife is a fantastic baker and cook, and she spoils me with my favorites (breakfast casserole, mac ‘n’ cheese) and we like to get the presents ready for the kids with a nice bottle of red wine and a good IPA, which Nick and I like to feature in our Ohio bar. About LET IT SNOW They’ve continued to tour through the years, but after the 2016 My2K tour, they wanted more time to be with family. Timmons has five kids, Nick three

and Drew two. So they decided to do a second Christmas album, 20 years after their first release on Motown Records. The guys recruited Grammy-nominated music, TV and film producer Adam Anders to oversee the project. Perhaps best known for his work as executive music producer for Glee, Anders has written and recorded with some of the biggest names in contemporary pop music, from Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez to Backstreet Boys and the Jonas Brothers. Along with beloved standards like “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas,” “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!”, and “Please Come Home For Christmas,” the 12-song collection includes their take on “What Christmas Means To Me,” written by Allen Story, Anna Gordy Gaye, George Gordy and is the standard that was popularized by Wonder. Joni Mitchell’s classic The River, one of my favorites, gets a magical refresh on the new CD. Says Drew: “We hadn’t thought of this song, but it shows a another side to the holiday, and creates a wonderful mood with the piano, the lyrics and the melody, adding depth to the album.”

Holiday Fashion Trends BY DEVIN PAPPAS

Ho Ho Ho, where can I find my glow this season? Shop local, style global. Whether you’re looking for the perfect party outfit or fashionista gift, St. Pete’s boutiques have something for every taste. Classic chic or bling, remember that now is the time to shop for holiday fluff, because once it’s gone, it’s gone. Here’s what I’m seeing in holiday “wow” attire and fabrics. Trending Colors: Metallics, olive green and burgundy mixed with holiday classic black, red and winter white. Everyday Attire: Retro, baby, from the seventies and eighties is HUGE with “Leather and Lace” or “Naughty and Nice” contrast all the rage. I am loving the leather skirt or pants paired with a lace shirt with bell sleeves. Again, take a fashion risk and go for red, green or ivory leather, not just black. Party Perfect: Get creative with the sequined look! Instead of a full sequin dress, go with sequin pants in your favorite metallic color and pair it with a tuxedo jacket. Other ideas? Flash a blouse with sequin sleeves paired with your classic black palazzo pants or go with a sequin halter partnered with a black A-line slit skirt. I like a silver sequin maxi fitted skirt.

STYLISH BURGER

Sexy, sleek slip dresses are so IN!! The more the detailing, the dressier it gets so go for ruffles or lace in winter white, black, green and red paired with rose gold or pearl accessories. Even the LBD (little black dress) gets a fresh update with high slits, cold shoulder, sequin shoulder embellishment or bedazzled sleeves. From Office to Party “Santa Baby:” Red is the rage, so wear that red skirt, suit, pumps, nails and lipstick. That smoking hot velvet suit in red, green or sleek black is a super trend this year. I am also seeing silky olive or burgundy wrap dresses. These two winter colors work fabulously when worn together or separately. Or you can go with hot tuxedo dress for that “sexy professional” look. Vintage is huge, so work in jewelry or accessories as conversation starters.

Your Fashion Muses: Audrey Hepburn, Jackie O, Lilly Pulitzer What's on your wish list: A pale pink Chanel suit and a perfect pair of blue jeans. What is your party signature attire? I like bold colors- orange, red, pink -for any occasion. Bright colors make me happy and I really stand out in a sea of black dresses. Where do you like to shop in DTSP? I collect vintage accessories, and enjoy The Lion’s Paw and Janet’s Antiques. I like to mix vintage with modern mid-century style clothes. What brands do you most like for clothes? Milly, Lilly Pulitzer

Favorite Shoes: I like too many! My favorite currently is Gucci. I wear the sandals all the time, because it improves the famous Florida flip flop look. My favorite pair are pink suede heels with GG logo and square

November/December 2017

Cold Shoulder: I see lots of one shoulder/one sleeved glitter shirts worn with blue denim and colored jeans for everyday or that same glitter shirt is being worn with black palazzo pants for a night out. You can wear the shirts off the shoulder, over the shoulder or one shoulder on, one off. Finishing Accents: Leave the clutch at home this year unless it has a attachable chain for hands free evenings. I love the jewel-encrusted chain link cross body bags, the gold mini boxes and the pearl detailing clutch on a long chain. Party-Ready Footwear: My words are,”nothing is off limits when it comes to crazy and stylish footwear this season” I am seeing extreme detailing such as: feathers, faux fur, pom poms, ribbon ankle straps and pearl decorations. It looks like it is all about the chunk heel in clear glass-like plexi material and embellished heels decorated with gold or silver accents and beading. For those of you that do not like heels, there are plenty of evening-wear flats with funky materials for the fanciest of dance floors. heels. Favorite Accessories: Anything authentic vintage….my acrylic bracelet gets SO much attention. I like my artist’s jewelry from Morean Art Center, Mail Sail Art show, and Florida Craftsman Gallery. Favorite Sunglasses: Chanel. Favorite Watch: A vintage silver face men’s Rolex. It screams space exploration and martinis to me. Favorite Handbag: I prefer very structured purses, nice straight lines. I mostly carry Ferragamo, but I have vintage lizard, alligator and acrylic. Florida Business Attire: I go with sleeveless shift dress and matching coat. Coat for the meetings, no coat rest of day and sling back shoes are a Florida must. I always have an umbrella with me, either a small orange Tori Burch that fits in my purse or a pink flamingo, fun and bright plus sunglasses.

Whether you’re going to an office/work party, or to a friend’s home, the key easy rule to follow is to not wear what you usually wear to your job. If you don a suit to work, you can still dress up in a suit, just not the office suit. Suit: Make a statement with a two-piece Windowpane patterned suit, and spice it up with a lapel flower, pocket square, and tie bar. (All of these can be found at John Craig Clothier at the Sundial Shops.) Add some

swagger by folding your pocket square with four points, tilt your tie bar so it is slightly askew, and finish it off with well-shined brogued tan wingtips. Dressy-Casual: Start with custom-fitted jeans in a non-traditional color with the pant leg tapering down towards the ankle. (Not skinny jeans, but jeans cut like suit pants.) Pay a tailor to measure you. Try Monograms by Barbara on 1st Ave N. across the street from the open air post office. Combine that with a Robert Graham or Bogosse shirt, and distressed suede wingtips. Tux: A tux is perfect for a fancy New Year’s shindig. You can keep it simple by renting one at Sacino’s Formalwear (4th St. N. & 22nd Ave.) However, if you have a budget, and think you’ll have at least one event a year that calls for a dinner jacket, it’s worth investing in custom-fitted formalwear.

To be a little different than then next guy, add a white lapel flower, a black tie with white piping, and a tux shirt with pointed collar instead of wingtips. Black patent leather shoes are mandatory. Another change-up is to go with a red dinner jacket with black collar and lapels. Extra points for tying your own bow tie. Anyone can do a clip-on. Learn how by searching YouTube for “How to tie a bow tie Charles French”. (His was the only one I could actually follow.) Kevin is Certified in Image Consulting & Personal Branding by the Studio for Image Professionals in NYC. He is the co-founder of ImmaculateStyle.com. He has often been referred to as “the best dressed man in Downtown St. Pete”. He can tie his own bowtie, and successfully match six different patterns in one ensemble just for fun.

Clemente know a thing or two about transforming a room; they recently turned the Hyatt Place into a fairy tale paradise and have been sprucing up St. Pete homes and parties for 15 years. We asked them what’s trending now. Said Frank: “We’re seeing a lot of natural rustic elegant elements with metallic elements (bronze and silver, pewter, not shiny), and you’ll see it in the holiday decorating we are doing at The Mill.” “For centerpieces, we like gorgeous! We mix candlelights of all different heights and eclectic design all down the table with an element of fabric,” says Frank. This season, you’ll see monochromatic, not red or green together in exterior and interior décor. “We take all shades of one color; purple is huge right now, so we would mix the nuances and textures of plum and grape all in the same family.” His house will be lit up in different shades of red and metallic tinsel this year. HEALTH / WELLNESS

Healthy Holidays BY MICHAEL R. MANTELL, PH.D.

In less than 10 seconds I found millions of hits on Google on “how to survive the holidays.” The secret sauce of healthy holidays comes down to something I call “ThEaMo” or Think, Eat and Move in healthy ways. Think: Do we really need to be told this stuff year after year, in so many millions of different ways? Focus on friends not food, enjoy the journey not the destination, make time for fitness, get plenty of sleep, serve others, create a “to-do” list, don’t compare your experience to others, get plenty of vitamin D3, drop your expectations, don’t get so focused on perfection that you believe you SHOULD have no challenges, forget Norman Rockwell, don’t dread it, be honest with yourself, avoid the pressures of family get-togethers, set manageable daily goals, don’t drink too much, avoid the “shoulds,” don’t pressure yourself, yada, yada, yada. The message from the media is that the holidays are draining. Nonsense, stress is not something that lurks in dark corners waiting to pounce on us. We invite stress in by the way we look at and think about events. Here’s the secret. People survive their own thoughts, nonsensical, irrational and inaccurate thoughts and self-created negative beliefs about how “difficult” a time the holidays are, especially if it’s not as perfect as they demand. Remember, the link is what you think. You can really get past the negative nonsense about how tough it is during the holidays by helping others, filling up on gratitude for all that others do

46

StPeteLifeMag.com

for you, and finding the good in whatever happens. People who are grateful take better care of themselves, exercise more, are more optimistic, less stressed and eat better too. Keep a gratitude journal, especially over the holidays, share your grateful thoughts with others, reevaluate your thoughts of anger and bitterness to help lighten your holidays, and spend some time volunteering to help others. Eat: Never allow yourself to attend an event hungry. If you know you are going to a party, fill up on fiber by eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Fiber-rich foods are lower in calories and will keep you feeling full. Practice mindful eating habits by staying aware of your choices and thoughts about food and being alert to mindless munching. Choose the smallest plate and fit it first with vegetables and salad before the entrees and desserts. Watch those alcohol calories, and drink water before, during and after the meal. Move: Healthy holidays including staying active and fit daily. Movement, exercise and physical activity help you clear your mind from that negative, erroneous thinking you slip into with the encouragement of the media who wants you to believe the holidays are so “stressful.” With moderate to intense physical activity at a minimum of 150 minutes or more each week, you certainly improve your mood, correct your biochemistry, develop your healthy brain cells, advance your immunity and elevate your overall health.

The Daily Five New Year 1. It’s a new day, a new year, a new start…be sure you take it! 2. Wake up, forgive yourself and begin again. 3. Need a new beginning? Today you have new possibilities once again. 4. Today is the first blank page of your 365 day book. Write it carefully. It’s called “Opportunity.” 5. Savor your new hopes, your new aspirations, and your new solutions (not RE-solutions). 6. Think of today as the start of a new journey, not just a new year. Family 1. Time spent with family is worth every second 2. The song of a family is always beautiful, regardless of the high or low notes 3. Doesn’t food taste better when you eat it with your family? 4. Family & health are intertwined in the best of times 5. The centerpiece of healthy living is family Holidays 1. Avoid holiday stress by planning now to assure thinking, eating, moving, and yes, spending well. 2. Avoid holiday stress by securing your “support” team now for companionship, volunteer opportunities, and holiday festivities. 3. Avoid holiday stress by putting your differences aside — especially at this time of the year. Besides, who cares, after all is said and done? 4. Avoid holiday stress by setting time aside for genuine time out, quiet time out, unplugging, journaling and mindful meditation. 5. Avoid holiday stress by thinking about solutions, not re-solutions, to executing and meeting your “why” reasons for a healthier, happier life in 2018.

HEALTHY LIVING

HEALTH INNOVATIONS In Tampa Bay, health care innovators at local hospitals, wellness centers, Eckerd College, USF, community partnerships, non-profits and biotech companies are working on the next best thing to keep you living well and longer. Here are some of SPL’s Faves. It’s All About The Green Going green is good for your health, and USF St. Petersburg (USFSP) earned a 95 out off 99 points from The Princeton Review’s prestigious Green Rating scores for 629 colleges. In addition to serving

local/organic foods, the USFSP community leads the way, investing in solar panels, a greenhouse and energy efficient buildings, leading innovative research in sustainability and incorporating environmental stewardship into many planning decisions on campus, thanks to the help of a full-time sustainability planner and a dedicated faculty and student body. • The USFSP’s Climate Action Plan sets out to reduce the university’s baseline greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2035 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. • Students play a lead role in sustainability efforts. The Student Green Energy Fund is financed through a $1 fee per credit hour voted on by students every three years. Students working

with the Green Energy Fund consider projects that reduce energy costs through conservation and the use of renewable energy to lower greenhouse gas emissions. Medical Innovations: The bionic man was science fiction till it wasn’t. Medical innovations are everywhere, from oxygen glasses that help with COPD to a body computer to manage insulin. USF researchers have discovered there’s plenty you can do to age with good health including staying active. • Paula Bickford has been working on how to harness the protective power of blueberries and other natural products to fight damaging inflammation and promote new cell growth. • Associate professor Jerri Edwards has been studying the positive effects of brain training.

“Brighter health and beauty for a more radiant Sunshine City.” This year, 29 nonprofit organizations received grants ranging from $10,000 to $15,000 to support one-time projects that will enhance their ability to improve organizational capacity and advance community health and health equity in South Pinellas County. The Foundation seeks to improve health care services and help organizations understand how to better serve our diverse communities, improving access to health services and identifying need. Examining how factors such as poverty, education, employment, lack of timely access to services impact health and well-being will lead to identifying the right partners, alliances and strategies and will promote good health.

Living a healthier lifestyle is easier when you have the support of like-minded people. St. Pete General Hospital is one of the HCA hospitals that offers H2U membership for only $20/year. Make It Fun: Be the first on the dance floor at a holiday mixer, do some yardwork with your playlist blasting holiday tunes or grab a DTSP bike and take a spin to see what’s new up and down Central Ave.

Vicki LeMay, Burg Fitness www.burgfitness.com Coach Vicki spent the first 15 years of her career in corporate America as a management consultant and her “downtime” was always spent going to the gym and helping friends create workouts and eating plans. Fast-forward to the present day... she ditched the corporate job, earned a nationally recognized certification (ACE) as a personal trainer and now her “downtime” is owning and operating Burg Fitness. She opened Burg Fitness because helping others is her passion. “I was renting space at other gyms for a while and having a difficult time with it because I couldn’t control the environment (crazy music, numbingly

loud dropping of weights, etc). I wanted to create a fun, comfortable place where members were like family and there was zero intimidation. So, that is what I did and we have the best fitness family and home for our members.” LeMay loves DTSP and is a true foodie. “Sea Salt has an amazing happy hour and I often go just for their avocado crab martini – YUM! Wine Madonna is a favorite and I love their wine tasting events with charcuterie boards and live music. For a good burger and fun atmosphere, The Avenue is always a good bet.” When she’s training, she loves exploring DTSP. “My happy “place” downtown would be the waterfront parks. It’s so peaceful to stroll along the water with my dog and husband Dan, or just sit and see the occasional dolphin.” Her workout regime is a daily affair. “I love to get 4-5 good, focused workouts in every week but also know the

importance of rest days. As a personal and group fitness trainer, I am active daily training others but make sure I set aside time for myself to get a good sweat on.” A good playlist helps, she says, and hers is eclectic. “From Cheap Thrills (Sia) to There’s Nothing Holding me Back (Shawn Mendes) - love a little Sinatra on bike rides.” Her favorite sport? “Cross-training is a combination of pure strength training, cardio conditioning and balance/core work. Building lean, tone muscles AND getting your heart rate up for heart health is so important. I create fun, dynamic workouts for myself (and my members) to keep it interesting, as I personally get bored easily.” LeMay hopes to expand her wellness work-outs in 2018. “I’d love to learn how to meditate! I have a hard time “shutting off ” and would like to learn techniques of meditation and maybe even meditative yoga.”

Upscale Casual Top 10 Whether you are planning a trip to St Pete or you live here and have missed out on a few of our local gems, we’ ve created a list of our favorite Upscale Casual restaurants that we feel delivers a spectacular culinary dining experience. We called this list upscale casual based on a quote from Justin Yu, GM at FarmTable Kitchen (now FarmTable Davis Jasmin

Cucina), “Dress codes are important in setting the tone for the style of dining in a restaurant. I always believe in dressing for dinner appropriately and according to the ambiance, style of service or price point of a restaurant. Upscale restaurants deserve a chic, well-dressed crowd.

With that said, a Formal Dress Code is difficult to enforce these days depending on the city and the formality of its restaurants. The Dress Code is falling more and more out of favor, as more Upscale Casual restaurants emerge who can provide a trendy ambiance with great food and service in a casual, comfortable environment.” Here’s our top ten. We live, work, and play in Downtown St. Pete – and we especially eat! St. Pete has so much to offer for delectable food and drink, and there are always new offerings simmering. Catch up with us at www.stpetersburgfoodies.com!

DINING/SPIRITS

Brick & Mortar This bustling Central Avenue restaurant now accepts reservations. Lucky for us, we got our favorite server, April. We have sung their praises before and we will sing them again right now! They have definitely earned their spot as the #2 restaurant in all of St Petersburg as voted on by local foodies! We ordered a bottle of a recommended Rosé that we thoroughly enjoyed! I don’t believe that we have had a bottle there that we did not like. To start I was intrigued by the Ahi Tuna Tartare with Kimchi cucumber and Brussel sprout leaves. I love ahi tuna tartare,

but I would venture to say, that with the addition of the kimchi cucumber and brussel sprout leaves, it is the best I have had in recent memory. Incredibly fresh and full of flavor! I couldn’t get enough of it. I was not raised on beets, so they always looked gross to me...just because I had not ever tried them prepared properly. Now whenever I see a beet salad on a menu, I am always intrigued, especially if that salad is the brain child of Chef Jason Ruhe. So, next up is the Beet Salad. Not a bite was left on the plate. Kevin and I share everything and this one was a crowd pleaser on both sides. The beets were super fresh and had a great, silky mouth feel. I also love watermelon radish, not to mention how pleasing it is on the eye. The salad was balanced with the goat cheese and nuts and topped with a very light salad dressing.

For our entreé. we ended up going with the special of the night, a house made fettuccini with pine butter, shaved crispy mushrooms, egg yolk and shaved Bottarga (from Wikipedia: Bottarga is the Italian name for a delicacy of salted, cured fish roe, typically of the grey mullet or the bluefin tuna). We also added shrimp to the dish, as we were given the option of adding a protein. I can’t say enough for how good this dish was. There is absolutely no question that the pasta is made in house! The difference is staggering!

Holiday Foodie Gifts In addition to these St. Pete faves, give a gift card to a favorite restaurant. We recommend Vom Fass (featured in the Sept./Oct. issue) for amazing oils, vinegars and a great selection of wines which are all organic, some from California, Italy, and other countries plus 14 scotches (10 of which are single-malt).

Kalamazoo Olive Company is Tampa Bay’s original Olive Oil Tasting Room. In operation since 2010, the unique aspect of the store centers on the tasting

experience. They are a truly “try before you buy” concept, stocked with the freshest, authentic olive oil and balsamic vinegar you can buy. Savory Spice Shop St Pete offers over 400 fresh spices & handcrafted seasonings. It is locally owned by Joan and Paul Bailey, lifelong St. Petersburg residents with a true passion for their city and its spice. Their mission is to provide high-quality herbs, spices, and seasonings at a fair price in customerfriendly quantities. Spice lovers can order a wide variety of products and spices online, from specialty salts to the best spice blends for any recipe. They also offer specialty food and cooking products and great spice gift sets for any occasion.

Locale Market offers an award-winning gift shop that is sure to inspire the chef, entertainer and wine-enthusiast! From cookbooks to tasty gourmet crackers and jams, they also have many seasonal items for your holiday events or gift giving.

Casa di Mazzaro is located next to the famed Mazzaro’s Market. Here you’ll find unique and hard-to-find kitchenware, gifts, and gadgets from all over the world, as well as a selection of quality loose-leaf teas (some available only online).

HOLIDAY DINING

‘Tis The Season To Eat By Nanette Wiser

Making holiday meals at home doesn’t have to be all about you. Ask guests to bring a potluck dish or BYOB, or order from local markets and restaurants in advance to ease your stress. The Full Monty: You can order Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixin’s from The Fresh Market, The Locale or Publix, or just stock up on pre-made sides and appetizers. From Trader Joe’s and Mazzaro Italian Market, stock up on gourmet cheeses, salami, olives and breads. My go-to apps areTrader Joe’s mini-quiches and frozen shrimp, and some gourmet pot-stickers and cilantro chicken won-tons in a crock pot, along

with our family favorite, Hebrew National cocktail franks in a bun! Apps In Advance: Order and pick up a day in advance appetizers from your favorite restaurant, and be sure to hit The Saturday Market for breads, pickles and other tasty comestibles. • Smoked fish spread from The Reef or your favorite local restaurant. • BBQ spareribs and other pu-pu platter staples. • Goat cheese drizzled in Tiger Sauce or Blueberry Jam. • Sushi from Pin, Wok & Bowl, The Lure or Souzou’s. • Greek salad, tiropitas or spanokopita from Acropolis Greek Taverna

Dean, your chocolates from Kilwin’s or Pinellas Chocolate Company, cupcakes from The Cupcake Spot, swah-rey or The Wandering Whisk, gluten-free vegan cookies from Sweet Divas Chocolate or Mickey’s Café & Organics macaroons. With dessert, serve local craft roasted coffee from Brew D’Licious, Black Crow Coffee or Kahwah, perked up by some bourbon from American Freedom Distillers. Like cold brew? Go for Made Coffee, now available in some Publix and created right here in DTSP near 3 Daughters Brewing. Add a few growlers or bottles from your favorite local brewery (Green Bench, 3DB) for the den for men football crowd..

Finishing Touches: Order your pies from The Village Inn, your truffles from William

Chefs Fall Faves: Don’t want to cook during the holidays? Got out of town guests? Make it easy by making reservations and calling ahead for appetizers, entrees and desserts for your Thanksgiving, Christmas or New Year’s Eve celebrations. We asked three of our favorite chefs to share with us what’s seasonal and delicious on their menus.

Chef Ted Dorsey, The Mill: It’s more than just fowl weather for turkey here. Try the Roast Duck, Cauliflower Fried Rice, Citrus Grilled Baby Bok Choy and Blackberry Soy Caramel

THE ART OF WINE Les Vins Georges Duboeuf chose local artist Ari Robinson to be their “cover girl” for the 2017 vintage Beaujolais Nouveau that debuted Nov. 16, marking the 35th year of the wine’s appearance in the U.S. “Candy Coated” was named the winner after voting took place on Facebook and Instagram in a competition of artists from around the world. “We are dedicating this vintage to the creators, dreamers, builders—anyone who is passionate about what they do,” winery founder Georges Duboeuf said. “This artist competition and Ms. Azzopardi’s work perfectly capture this sentiment.” Robinson is a St. Pete mixed-media artist with a BFA in painting and sculpture. Cocktail Party 101

Set the stage for holiday magic. Small bites, a make-it-yourself cocktail bar, the perfect punch, a curated playlist and voila! A stress free party. Ask guests to bring their favorite holiday cookie or candy so everyone can take home a sweet reminder of your holiday party. Décor: Use tealight flameless candles to give the room a soft glow and scented plug-ins for apple wreath or evergreen, and a laser holiday display outside that turns your entrance into a wonderland. Music: A little Ella or Billie Holiday is grand, but country and pop versions of holiday traditional tunes up the joy factor. Let Siri and Google Home DJ for the night.

PUNCH PERFECT DIY Cocktail Bar: Display recipe cards for some holiday cocktails and make sure you have the fixings for a classic martini (gin or vodka, stuffed olives, cocktail onions) and Bloody Marys. Cut up limes and lemons in advance, set out festive stirrers and glassware, offer spicy Ginger Beer, Ginger Ale, tonic, cranberry juice and club soda and a few small batch bourbons, Scotch and whiskeys. In another area, chill beers and white wines/bubbly and set up wine glasses and red wine for a second DIY bar. Use ornaments and décor to give both bars a holiday feel. Put everything in order, alcohol first, then mixers, then garnishes and make sure you have plenty of ice! Nibbles: In addition to little snacks (nuts, olives, pickles, chips, pretzels, red and green M&Ms in glass jars), offer small grab-and-go appetizers at a buffet area, from mini quiche to spanakopita, hummus or artichoke cheese dips, veggies, charcuterie (salami, cheese), crackers and chilled grapes, clementines, chestnuts and other seasonal fruits.

Beer Cheers

Craft beer makes a perfect man-cave gift and a craft beer walkabouts a great excursion with guests or friends. Here’s what’s cooking in St. Pete: 3 Daughters: During Thanksgiving week, holiday hours are 2-11 pm, with food trucks 4-9 and live music nightly 7-10 pm. In addition to some seasonal ales, the new local craft malt liquor 3 Daughters Brewing Ctrl + Malt + Del is worth sipping. Said one reviewer: “Ctrl + Malt + Del pours pale yellow and crystal

clear, with a thin white head. The nose is neutral, with just a hint of sweet corn, the preferred adjunct for this style. The flavor is lightly sweet, with a little grain and little to no hop character, other than the small amount needed to offset any excessive sweetness. The finish is dry, the result of a very full fermentation (the goal of malt liquor is generally to get as much alcohol into the beer as possible).” Flying Boat Brewery: No “to-go” beer yet, but you can take the autumn chill out with these brews and they have great spaces to rent for an office or holiday party. Woodlawn Pub Ale: Irish Red meets an English Mild. Malt forward with notes of caramel and slight roast. Light and easy drinking. Green’s Lantern American IPA: Tropical fruit and citrus dominate the flavor and

aroma, with only a supporting light malt leading to a dry finish. Red Sky at Night : Dark fruit and toffee notes with a piney hop character and a crisp clean finish. Green Bench: The Brewers’ Taste Off Battle culminates 11/21 at Urban Brew & BBQ, battling Hidden Springs for the Championship. You be the judge while enjoying a four-course meal and tasting eight beers to determine which pairing is best. Order your kegger now for the holidays: Half barrels are $185, and slims are $80. Pinellas Ale Works: Wednesday Trivia and Yappy Hour continues. May we suggest these robust beers to go for your holiday: Coffee + Vanilla- Bean Porter, 1888 Russian Imperial Stout and the always popular Jack Daniels Barrel Aged Imperial Stout.

THE VINO VINO GUY

Wine Gift Giving BY ELLIOTT WISER It’s an annual holiday headache— who gets a good gift and who gets a great gift, especially when it comes to wine. First you need to decide how much to spend. The best answer to is to quote the late comedienne Joan Rivers who use to say, “Can we talk?”. Giving a gift of wine is tricky; it really does say something about you and the person you are giving it to. (Some of you are thinking right now, it’s the thought that counts, I refer you back to the Joan River’s quote.) To help you make your holiday list, I have constructed the “Sliding Scale of Wine Gift Giving” with three perfect wine gifts with three different price points for three different types of gift recipients. Case #1 “ I really don’t have much money to spend (starving student, artist, etc)”. “You’re a Facebook friend and you gave me a gift”. “You’re my boss and I just want you to know my name”. You are in the wheelhouse of The Vino Vino Guy. I specialize in great wines under $25. You can’t go wrong with Charles Smith wines. They taste great, are inexpensive, and have fun names. They make an impression for little money. I suggest Boom Boom Syrah ($17) or Kung Fu Girl Riesling ($11).

Case #2 “Good friend who likes wine.” “I have an annual review coming up and I really need to impress my boss.” “My relative thinks I’m cheap and I’m going to show them otherwise”. Pinot Noirs are great gifts because in my experience most people love them. They offer great texture and taste. One of my favorites is under $50 and you can find it everywhere. Belle Glos Clark and Telephone Vineyard’s Pinot Noir. This Central California wine has several strong years 2012-2015. Case #3 “Close friend or beloved relative/ parent/sibling who loves wines”. “Business associate who made a big difference in my career this year”. “I am so in the dog house and I need to get out quickly”. My friend, you need to make a statement. This one will hurt, but you will make a lasting impression. It is one of my favorite wines and it is a very well known name. Opus One was born from a partnership between two wine giants, Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe Rothschild. This California Cabernet Sauvignon is silky and provides a mouthful of flavor. The cost….wait for it…around $290. But it will get you out of the doghouse. Promise.

Elliott Wiser hosted the popular cable wine show Vino Vino for 8 years. Find more wines under $25 at thevinovinoguy website and Facebook.

Wine Tips Wondering what wine to serve with your Thanksgiving turkey? First, serve a white and a red, so you cover not only the turkey, but also all the side dishes. For the white wine I suggest a white Burgundy, a Chardonnay with little or no oak, a dry Riesling, or Gewurztraminer. For a red go for a Pinot Noir, Merlot, or a fruity Zinfandel. Avoid reds with a heavy oak taste.

The Power Of Star Wars Costumes ®

seven films in the Star Wars series, the exhibition uncovers the challenges, the intricate processes and the remarkable artistry of Lucas, the concept artists and costume designers. The costumes reflect an eclectic mix of cultural, historical and mythical sources that add rich texture to the story.

Iconic costumes from ―a galaxy far, far away are presented at MFA in the Smithsonian traveling exhibition, Star Wars™ and the Power of Costume. The Lucas Touch: George Lucas imagined and created a fantastical world filled with dynamic characters who told the timeless story of the hero’s journey. The costumes shaped the identities of these now famous characters, from the menacing black mask of Darth Vader and the gilded suit of C-3PO, to the lavish royal gowns of Queen Amidala and a bikini worn by Princess Leia.

Through nine presentational chapters, visitors will explore the creative process from Lucas’ vision through concept drawings by artists such as Ralph McQuarrie and Iain McCaig, to the final costume designs of John Mollo and Trisha Biggar. • Introduction: Dressing a Galaxy • Jedi versus Sith: Form, Function and Design • Concept and Design: for Royalty and Beyond • Symbolism and Military Power: Outlaws and Outsiders • All Corners of the Galaxy: The Galactic Senate • After the Throne: Padmé’s Journey • Darth Vader: Iconic Villain: and Droid™ Design

Films & Events Short films in Star Wars and The Power of Costume provide a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process and include interviews with artists, designers and actors. The visitor experience will be enhanced by interactive flip books featuring sketches, photographs and notes that capture the creative team’s inspiration and vision.

“Craftsmanship and artistry in costume design are valued creative components in the Star Wars saga,” said Lucas. “The detailed precision of a design can be as bold a measure of storytelling as words on a page, leading to truths at the core of a character, situation or shared history. From initial concept drawings to complex physical constructions, the costumes featured in this exhibition serve to further define crucial aspects of worlds created to move, educate and entertain us—to inspire the imagination.” The Exhibit: Get inside the creative process by showing how designers interpret and translate George Lucas’ vision for the iconic Star Wars characters into reality. Concept drawings and actual costumes will be on view, so visitors can explore the process of their creation and enjoy the sheer beauty of both. Presenting more than 60 of the finest hand-crafted costumes from the first

The Chihuly Collection

Thru Jan. 31,” Inscribing Surfaces” features Ethan Stern’s internationallyacclaimed hand-blown glassworks. But that’s only the beginning. Once cooled, Stern spends hours in his studio carefully carving patterns onto the surface of his glass pieces.

Inspired heavily by the heritage of cut crystal, this body of work explores an array of patterns beveled into the surface whose angles refract light into and through the form. Stern describes his work, “Unlike the cut glass vessels of the past, these sculptures are not vessels designed to hold things but containers to hold light.” Stern’s mark making is a deliberate manipulation of light affecting his artwork. Admission to the Chihuly Collection also includes access to live glassblowing demonstrations by local artists at the Morean Glass Studio & Hot Shop across the street at the Morean Arts Center.

The debut works add a true Florida flair to TFO’s 50th anniversary celebration while supporting new music and showcasing the extraordinary talent in the state. Nashville Now BY CINDY COCKBURN

Nashville. “Happy Fall Ya’ll!” The land of denim, cowboy boots and country music. Gotta love a city that offers a Gibson Café and live music in their airport. Upon arrival, we head to the roof top bar of the Westin in Nashville for a sunset view that is breathtaking. Music, food and a fabulous welcome to the heart of country music.

Musicians live, work and play here. It’s the home of Tayor Swift, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, Charles Kelly of Lady Antebellum and Martina McBride. Celebrities like Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban wander around just like any other locals. Check out their fav gourmet ice cream store called Jeni’s place. We did and said “HI YA’LL” to musician Chris Isaac enjoying his pre-concert treat wearing dark glasses. Hometown hero and resident Sheryl Crow is often a headliner during local outdoor free events. From the stage, she exudes joy for her fans and this city that adores her. Why not? It’s easy to sing her heart out to a loving crowd and then go home to her own bed, a few miles away, happily skipping the tour bus. For more information, go to VisitMusicCity.com Downtown, Draper James & More: Actress/producer/super star Reese Witherspoon loves her hometown of Nashville so much she created a store to honor her family. The locals call it “Reese’s Southern Spirit” and flock to her famous shop called Draper

James. Ya gotta love wandering around downtown trying on cowboy boots in stores located on every block. Nashville’s downtown area features a diverse assortment of entertainment, dining, cultural and architectural attractions. The Broadway and 2nd Avenue areas have night clubs and an assortment of restaurants. North of Broadway lie Nashville’s central business district, Legislative Plaza, Capitol Hill and the Tennessee Bicentennial Mall. The town salutes the arts and offers 160 venues showcasing singers and songwriters. Downtown Nashville reminds me of New York City. Wander around the honkey tonk “Times Square” west side/ downtown area or venture to the “upper east side” more Madison Avenue-like neighborhoods called the Gulch. A favorite hot spot for people-watching is the rooftop bar of Acme Feed & Seed overlooking downtown. Nothing says “Nashville” like a visit to the Grand Ole Opry. True confessions: I had to see where The Bluebird Cafe was. This tiny iconic club featuring up-&-coming & experienced songwriters is located at 4104 Hillsboro Pike. It’s a “must” for those of us who love the Nashville TV show.

Spirited Season: During the holidays, lavish lights and decorations envelop the city, with a full slate of cultural celebrations, topped off by Music City’s Bash on Broadway live concert, fireworks and a “Guitar Drop” as thousands count down to a Happy New Year.

Opryland Rocks: No matter what time of year you visit, don’t miss Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center with nine acres of indoor gardens complete with a 44-foot cascading waterfall. On the opposite end: Monday nights are hot at “3rd and Linsley,” a sort of insiders Music Hall. We met a diverse group of music lovers there from all walks of life, including the Mayor of Alaska. This place fills up hours in advance. The crowd turns out to cheer on “old timers” called the “Time Jumpers.” We even had a Vince Gill sighting. Culinary Mecca: One of Nashville’s best known culinary contributions, hot chicken, was an accidental creation by a woman seeking revenge. Prince’s Hot Chicken, the first and perhaps most well-known hot chicken restaurant, began when Thornton Prince’s girlfriend suspected him of cheating on her so she put extra pepper in his fried chicken. Thornton liked it so much that he opened the BBQ Chicken Shack in the mid-1930s which would later become Prince’s Hot Chicken. The trendy “Virago Robato Grill & Sushi bar,” is THE hangout for Asian fusion fare, sushi & cocktails, with chic, modern decor & a roof deck. This is located in the cool district of Nashville known as the Gulch. The famous Martin’s Bar- B –Que on Belmont Blvd. has rave reviews. Another ex-Florida friend and now Nashville resident Dave Gerber took me there for lunch, where they cook their meats fresh every day. Lines are out the door with customers waiting for what seems like hours in a casual setting. The oh-so-yummy pulled pork sandwiches are a big hit.

The St. Pete arts scene is booming. We’re getting ready to welcome several new multi-million dollar museums next year and our arts districts are literally exploding with new talent. Once a year, we head south to Miami to mingle with art lovers from around the world at the annual Art Basel event Dec. 7-10 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The week encompassing the fair is known as Miami Art Week when dozens of satellite fairs, events and all night pop-up celeb parties take over the entire city. As the largest contemporary art fair in North America, nearly 100,000 art collectors and aficionados descend. Heads up: it’s not for everybody. The nonstop action is morning, noon and night. The sidewalks are teeming with visitors and reservations are booked a year in advance. There’s zero parking and hotel rooms double in price. Art collectors and fans fly in from all over the United States, Europe, and South America to pack Wynwood Art District’s mural-covered streets by day and South Beach clubs by night. Where To Go: Walk along South Beach’s famous Ocean Drive strip to beachfront restaurants and dozens of Art Deco hotels. Stay north of 15th Street to be within walking distance of everything you’ll need during Art Basel. Hotels: The best hotels in South Beach are within walking distance of the show and have a five night minimum, easily setting you back about $7,000.

Explore The Design District: Miami Design District was born in 2005 and now called Design Miami, it is a decorative-arts sideshow to the annual Art Basel Miami art fair. This area is a fashionable hangout with round-theclock street life plus a deluxe shopping zone with boutiques from Bulgari to Berluti, Céline to Cartier. Party Hearty: By about 11 p.m. or 12 a.m., the people who are actually here for the art go to sleep, and then the parties kick in. They’re held everywhere from clubs to pop-up locations, but a popular choice is to hold them directly on the beach in a tent. • The Delano is always buzzing during Art Basel whether it’s an exclusive soiree

If you can stay out late enough, the bar is famous for serving a round of complimentary homemade chicken noodle soup around 4 a.m.

Mini-Music Festival Scene: Over the years Art Basel Miami Beach week has become perhaps one of America’s best under the radar mini-music festivals. The music ranges from A-List pop stars to late-night sets at mainland clubs. If you wanted to you could spend the entire week ignoring the art in favor of the music and still come away fulfilled. Basement at The Miami Beach EDITION promises to be a hot spot for late night Art Basel after parties. The subterranean club-lounge boasts the intimate Discobox dance club hosting everyone from Questlove to Soul Clap, an ice skating rink and a four-lane bowling alley. Late Night Munchies: You’re out till the wee hours. Here’s my recommendations: Bodega: Open-air taco stand on South Beach that stays open until 5 a.m. nightly. Ricky’s: outpost of New York City’s Artichoke Pizza serving their craveworthy pizza by the slice or the whole pie until 5 a.m.

Talde: Top Chef alum Dale Talde’s restaurant and lounge inside The Confidante hotel is where to keep the party going with a craft cocktail and a live DJ Thurs.-Sat. nights.

AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL

Non-Stop Asheville

Desert Holiday Getaway

By ILoveTheBurg.com

A combination of cool weather (60 to 70 degree highs!), stunning views, numerous belly busting restaurants and, of course, tons of breweries, we can’t help but give a well-rounded grade of A for the city of Asheville, North Carolina. It probably helps that it’s just less than a 2 hour plane ride on the budget carrier, Allegiant, from the St. Pete-Clearwater airport which makes it convenient. We wonder why it took us this long to make the visit. We’ve been missing out on this cool, hip, progressive town all along. We enjoyed driving through the Blue Ridge Parkway, and made a pit stop at the Grove Park Inn. It may be a little pricey for a night’s stay but you can always have a nosh and a cocktail in their outdoor dining area with stunning views of the mountains. Even the hotel itself is just architecturally distinct. And if you’ve got time for some exhilarating fun, spend a few hours with your friends on one of Navitat’s zipline tours. The adventure goes with the views and you get to know more about the city and the surrounding natural beauty. They probably have the best (and funniest) guides to make the experience relaxing and entertaining at the same time. FYI: ExploreAsheville.com Brews: Be ready to get your beer game on! With just a population of about 89,000 people and 26 craft breweries, Asheville just ranked number 1 in the country for breweries per capita. We tried our best to drink as many pints as we could in the amount of time we

were there including an entertaining brewery tasting tour of the newish New Belgium Brewing Co. which we highly recommend. Below are some of our other favorite brewery stops during our visit. Green Man Brewery: One of NC’s oldest breweries. New Belgium Brewing Co.: Great beer selection. Learning about its history and how it is the biggest employee owned brewery in the country is quite impressive. Employees also get a cool bike after their first year in the company! Catawba Brewing Co.: The live music outdoors is a nice touch. Thirsty Monk: Good looking bartenders to go with their delicious beers on tap. The Funkatorium: Some of the best sours we’ve had! Bars: If beer is not your speed, Asheville also has plenty of cocktail bars sure to impress you with their own takes on classic libations. Sovereign Remedies: Beautifully designed interiors, perfect for just lounging with friends. Tupelo Honey Café: There’s usually a line…but it’s so worth the wait. They also have a couple of branches in Asheville. Nightbell: Ever had an Old Fashoined that tasted like peanut butter? Oh-EmGee. Foodie Faves: Of course, you’ll need some delicious eats to go with all that drinking. Asheville also delivers on that front. It’s amazing how this small town can boast of so many foodie places with some of the most talented and revered chefs in the country. Biscuit Head: They have a couple in Asheville. Best biscuits and fried chicken! Loved their sriracha slaw too. Be ready for food coma. Over Easy Café: Limited seating but at least they give you coffee while you wait. Delicious and perhaps a lighter breakfast fare. Buxton Hall Barbecue: You have to try ALL the sauces.

Nestled on six acres in the foothills of Paradise Valley, an exclusive suburb of Scottsdale, this newly renovated 43-room luxury hotel was originally built in the 1930’s by cowboy artist Alonzo “Lon” Megargee as his private residence and art studio. Multiple wreaths and elaborately decorated trees with handmade ornaments and dried flowers from Arizona grace the property, adding an authentic charm. Thirsty Pelican Tours

ENTREPRENEUR 101

How long have you had the business? Basically it was fun times that evolved into a business plan, with Thirsty Pelican Tours officially incorporating in 2015.

Entrepreneur Maris Jeffery is the owner of the Thirsty Pelican Tours, a sudsy endeavor that took her from working as an engineer to craft beer tourism. Maris was recently selected as an Inner City Connections 2017 Champion of Entrepreneurship Fellow and will be in NYC for a conference of CEO’s to learn more about how to sustain momentum as an inner city small business. “The best part about this is I’ll be stopping by Brooklyn Brewery to sample a few brews and remind them of how nice the weather is this time of year in St Pete!” What breweries do you tour downtown? Being that St Pete is so central, it is a great city to tour, and also, a great city to tour from, as we make our way around to over 65 Tampa Bay area breweries. As a St Pete resident & business owner, it is so easy to show off our town, and of course we tour ALL of the St Pete craft beer breweries (and craft distilleries)! Do you book for private parties for the holiday? Absolutely! We book custom private tours all year long, in all types of vehicles, but the holidays are especially fun! People can book an Ugly Sweater Tour, Santa’s Helpers Tour, Holiday Lights Tour, or really, just about any kind of tour they want! What did you do before this? The short story is I’ve had a very unique career as an engineer and project liaison. My home base has been St Pete, but I travelled so much that one year I was actually Jet Blue’s passenger with the most miles on the west coast of Florida!

What gave you the idea to do this business? This idea sparked out of my desire to stay home! I’d enjoyed the craft beer scene throughout my travels, and city tours were a big part of that. At the time we didn’t have any bus tours based in St Pete, and I think we’re still the only one. I realized that, with this company, I wouldn’t have to miss out on the cultural experiences & great mix of people that I enjoyed most about traveling. St Pete’s got that! What were the obstacles? How did you overcome them? A huge hurdle for us has been introducing people to the concept of professional bus tours. Believe me when I say I’ve been on some really good tours, and some scary bad ones! The goal was to create the highest quality tour where people can relax and enjoy the various craft brews and hear about the unique stories behind each brewery. The challenge was to get the word out and do it on a low budget.

November is National Entrepreneur Month. Tampa Bay ranks among the top 40 U.S. metros for growth entrepreneurship. From USF St. Pete’s Business School to The Innovation District, Dali’s Innovation Lab to SPC’s Collaborative Lab, there is no shortage of vision and support. HSN’s Dream Academy HSN knows a thing or two about rags-toriches biz folks with good ideas. Their most well-known entrepreneur, Joy Mangano is on a tour promoting her new book, “Inventing Joy,” with personal and professional tips for success. HSN has its own version of Shark Tank, a project called American Dream initiative, that invites entrepreneurs to pitch their product and trains and supports the innovators and inventors. In October, HSN announced a partnership with the University of Tampa’s Lowth Entrepreneurship Center to develop curriculum for the Ameircan Dream Academy,

We picked up a lot of momentum coming into 2017 when Expertise.com out of Seattle recognized us as a Top Tampa Bay Tour Company! We continue to work on getting the word out, and thankfully, it is getting easier each year as more and more of our neighbors in and around St Pete get to know us!

The first Dream Academy in Washington D.C. was Nov. 18-19, followed by quarterly academies across the U.S. The event features a renowned keynote entrepreneur, trainng (manufacturing, legal, quality assurance, branding, marketing, pitching, social media) and a product pitch panel.

What’s next? Well, the plan is to stay focused. There are 3 pillars to our business. One is public tours, two is private tours and three is Beercations. While we keep building up the first two, we will be putting more effort into attracting people to Tampa Bay specifically for Beercations in 2018. In St Pete, we’re currently teamed up with two local St Pete hotels on taking care of Beercationers.

MONEYWISE

5 Fiscal Tips

Ready For Retirement?

From end-of-year charity deductions to buck boosters, here are some ways to wrap up savings and wish auld lang syne to 2017. Give smart: Plot your charitable contributions for the year and make a plan for 2018. Be sure to keep receipts and research your choice of charity with the help of CharityNavigator.com Shop wisely: Download a shopping or coupon app and store your merchant loyalty numbers on your phone and add digital coupons to your supermarket loyalty card. Bring competitor flyers with you to retailers and always negotiate, if you can, a better price. At the pump, use gas advantage programs from grocery store chains and gas

station brands. Buying a dishwasher or dryer, ask for open box items, display models or unused, slightly dinged or returned products. Check credit: Review your credit card bills, and renegotiate lower interest and be on the lookout for recurring for charges you don’t use. Consolidate, pay off and cancel cards you don’t use and set a budget for what you’ll spend this season in advance. Save on health: Snag the lowest price for procedures (MRI, ultrasound) for different facilities within your network, compare costs on SaveOnMedical. com and cut your drug costs by talking with your doctor about cheaper drugs. Shop around for meds and buy glasses/ contacts online. Auto Savings: If your car is driven under 5,000 miles a year, ask your insurer for a low-mileage discount. Looking for tires? Buy them online and pay to have them installed. Buy gas on Monday, it’s usually cheaper.

It’s not just about savings and setting up a 401 K. Whether you’re ten or 30 years away, it’s smart to consult a financial advisor about how you can plan ahead to fund your bucket list. You need to factor in housing, health and inflation costs and educate yourself about financial options and trends. Here’s some tips: • Put 15% of your salary in savings and put it on autopilot with a direct deposit. • Take your employer’s 401K match. • Audit your retirement account fees every year and review your investments with a professional. • Don’t make early retirement withdrawals. • Put every tax refund into savings.

Financial Advisers

2017

One Progress Plaza Suite 165 St. Petersburg, FL 33701

www.HearnHoytRamsey.com Named to the 2017 Edition of the Financial Times 400 Top Financial Advisers.

The FT 400 was developed in collaboration with Ignites Research, a subsidiary of the FT that provides specialized content on asset management. To qualify for the list, advisers had to have 10 years of experience and at least $300 million in assets under management (AUM). The FT then invited a list of just under 1,000 advisors to complete a survey used to obtain more information on the advisors practices. 400 qualified advisers were then scored on six attributes: AUM, AUM growth rate, compliance record, experience, industry certifications and online accessibility. AUM is the top factor, accounting for roughly 60-70 percent of the applicant’s score. Additionally, to provide a diversity of advisors, the FT placed a cap on the number of advisors from any one state that’s roughly correlated to the distribution of millionaires across the U.S. The ranking may not be representative of any one client’s experience, is not an endorsement, and is not indicative of advisor’s future performance. Neither Raymond James nor any of its Financial Advisors pay a fee in exchange for this award/rating. The FT is not affiliated with Raymond James.

Skyway Marina District sushi restaurant is also in the works for the area. It’s first major project — a $70 million mixed-use development — will feature apartments, retail space and foodie spots on 9 acres of land at 30th Avenue South and 34th Street South.

The rejuvenation of the Skyway Marina District is abundantly clear as new businesses continue to open. The Skyway Marina District comprises the 2 mile stretch between 54th Avenue and 29th Avenue South along 34th Street. The area boasts a bounty of culinary and commerce staples. Toward the end of 2016, the Publix at Bay Point Plaza (5295 34th Street South) revealed a fresh new look, and Pet Supermarket (5001 34th Street South) officially opened its doors to the public. The city also got to know Elite Watersports — a family owned business in the heart of the Skyway Marina District. The forward momentum continues in 2017 with the addition of Wawa; a new

An estimated 35,000 sq. ft. will be devoted to retail. The apartments are said to be tailored to the millennial demographic. Construction on the site should begin this summer. Visit the district’s Facebook page for updates on new developments, openings and events. The Getaway also has plans to open a 13,000 sq. ft. location in the Skyway Marina District in late 2017/early 2018 at 4801 37th Street South. In October, the Chamber of Commerce and city officials cut the ribbon on the latest business to open in the reemerging Marina Mall, Brea’s Coffee. The once mobile gourmet coffee concept has set roots at 4301 34th Street South — owners Bruce and Andrea McWilliams have already endeared themselves to the local community. Visitors can enjoy servings

of Organo Brand Hot Coffee, Tea, Hot Chocolate, Mocha’s & Espressos, along with Iced Coffee, Tea & Frappe’s. Caffeine seekers with a demanding sweet tooth are invited to indulge their sweet tooth with creations like the Red Velvet, Caramel or Oreo Frappes. The McWilliams consistently dedicate themselves to helping worthy causes. The duo donates up to 30% of proceeds during fundraising cycles to charity. (they’re currently raising funds through the sales of their red velvet frappe during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.) Very soon, Kaye’s Vintage Jewelry will join Brea’s at the burgeoning shopping center. Their respective arrivals complement an already diverse mix of food, fun and retail concepts — Doc’s has long stood as a live music bastion in the recently rebranded Skyway Marina District. Burg residents got to know the vendors better during the Skyway Marina Mall’s first outdoor flea market November 4, with local shops showing their wares. An official coronation ceremony Nov. 15 celebrated the mall’s grand opening.

KINDNESS NEWS

The Kind Mouse Mouse Nibbles Weekend Feeding Program: Non-perishable food is provided each and every weekend to the “hungriest of the hungry” students in the Tampa Bay area. This is a confidential program, where they feed regularly 350 students on average, but up to 400 over the summer.

Gina Wilkins started off as an architectural draftsman but after seeing the 2011 CBS 60 Minutes Story “Hard Times Generation: Homeless Kids”, she just knew she had to help her neighbors. The mother in her couldn’t imagine not being able to feed her children or not knowing they had a safe place to call home. The Kind Mouse was born as a nonprofit in 2012 by Gina Wilkins to assist local families in transition and their chronically hungry children. In addition to doing good, The Kind Mouse involves children in their program, training them to make “kindness” part of their lives from an early age.

Kind Mouse Transitional Families: A 90-day program for hardworking individuals and families affected by the economy. Food, houseware and pet supplies provided. Mice In Training & Mice Intern Programs: Mice In Training is targeted at 5-12 year olds. The children learn about the mission of The Kind Mouse, volunteerism, and the importance of eradicating hunger. The children shadow organization leaders and adult volunteers so they can see The Kind Mouse in action. The children work as volunteers at The Kind Mouse events. They budget, purchase and pack food for the Mouse Nibbles program; run food drives; and participate in fundraising activities. The children also have an opportunity to develop their public speaking skills by speaking at meetings and events.
