Greetings, Burgers … and non-Burgers alike! I make my debut as editor in this issue and look forward to bringing you a diverse array of coverage on topics of interest to anyone who lives, works or plays in our fair city.
I chose one of my favorite St. Pete events – the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg - as the cover story for this issue because as a Motor City native, cars are in my blood. When the Formula One races came to the streets of Detroit in the 1980s (home of the Detroit Grand Prix now), I got my first taste of the excitement of a live street race. Sleek, fast, sexy and definitely on the wild side, I was in love … and have been to this day. I can appreciate the strength of a perfectly tuned engine, the beauty of an exquisitely designed body, and the engineering wizardry of an aerodynamic race car that hugs the pavement at 200 mph. I encourage you to think positive and make the most of race weekend. Party with the locals and the visitors at local bars and restaurants, visit the paddocks and watch the race teams at work, attend an event, and you might just realize it’s one of the best weekends of the year. Another spotlight event in this issue is the opening of the spectacular Imagine Museum on Central Avenue just north of the Warehouse Arts Distsrict. This impressive museum brings insight into the American Studio Glass Movement and is definitely worth a visit. I was overwhelmed by the diversity and beauty of this collection – it certainly adds another jewel in the crown of the arts scene in St. Petersburg.

The 19-time Grammy award-winning singer, whose music spans over six decades, will grace the stage on February 9 at the Duke Energy Center for the Arts, Mahaffey Theater. He’s been performing in Florida since he first got started in the 1950’s. “So much has changed since then, but it remains a beautiful and welcoming place and I love coming back each year,” said the legendary singer. Last year, he thrilled all of us who sat in awe and listened to this superstar on stage. It may be surprising to learn he’s also a talented painter and has exhibited his work in galleries around the world. Three of his original paintings are part of the permanent collection in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC. “ I always try to paint while I am in Florida and have done many sketches and watercolors of the State and look forward to getting some drawings done of

Anne Drake McMullen St. Petersburg Area Chamber Chair BY CINDY COCKBURN The last time I had lunch with Anne Drake McMullen, it took weeks to get on her calendar. We were sitting at an outdoor café on Beach Drive, overlooking the Bay on a sunny day and my friend, the Chief Development Officer for Doyle Wealth Management, suddenly started laughing. “My calendar will be even more packed in 2018,” she reminded me. During the St. Petersburg Area Chamber’s Annual Meeting on February 7 at the Mahaffey Theater, the gavel will be passed to Anne Drake McMullen. She will become the Chamber’s 4th woman chair in its 119-year history. Welcome to the Year of the Woman! She points out that in 2018, St. Pete will seat women in leadership roles at the Downtown Partnership, the St. Pete City Council, and the Pinellas County School Board. She says with a grin: “This is not your grandfather’s Chamber.” Drake McMullen is well-suited for her Chamber role - she has over 27 years of business development experience. She is happily married to Neil McMullen who is among the founding families of Pinellas County. As the business community celebrates the successes of 2017, the Chamber is planning for a robust agenda in 2018. Drake McMullen looks forward to advancing the Chamber’s efforts on the Grow Smarter Strategy, a public/private partnership with the City, to enhance and support the city’s “smart” economic growth plan.
GETTING PERSONAL Where were you raised? I come from the Boston and Cape Cod vicinity; began my career in Washington, DC, and spent 20 years working and raising my family in Columbus, Ohio, before moving to the St. Petersburg area in 2007.

How will you juggle the full time job and new role? Given the many roles I have played with the Chamber since 2010 as Chair of Public Policy Committee, Treasurer of the PAC, Vice Chair of Membership for the Chamber Board, and member of the Board’s Finance Committee and Executive Committee, hopefully the demand on my time will not be much more than I have already committed. Tell us about the company where you work? Jillian and Bob Doyle have been tremendously supportive of the strategic plan I created and executed for the firm. We have witnessed remarkable growth since the founding of the business in 2005. What are you feeling, going forward and helping to lead this City that you love? Love is the right word to describe St. Pete. Whether you live, work or study here, you feel personally attached and responsible for the success of the city. It is
like no other place I have lived before. The city has a living, breathing, vibe that needs to be nurtured by every person who is part of this community. It is a passion every business person in the chamber exudes. Most importantly, the welcoming warmth of St. Pete is deeper and more profound than almost any other city in the world. Newcomers are welcomed like family and new business people are embraced in the community and immediately surrounded by leaders who have a stake in the success of each new business that moves or starts in St. Pete. What are some of your first initiatives? I am proud that the Chamber has selected a small business leader to take a visionary view of our future and support my efforts in advancing a collaborative regional relationship with with my counterpart in the Tampa Chamber. We are excited to work on regional transportation issues, infrastructure issues, increased diversity and minority owned businesses on both sides of the Bay.

Sebastien Bourdais
36 Time Racing Champion PHOTOS BY INDY CAR
In the world of race car driving, traveling is a way of life. Testing, racing, meeting with team engineers and sponsors – drivers are jetting across the country and sometimes around the world year-round. So when it comes to choosing a place to call home, a place where you wish to establish roots and raise a family, drivers can pretty much call the shots. St. Petersburg won the race for home base for Sebastien Bourdais, the winner of the 2017 Firestone St. Pete Grand Prix Verizon IndyCar race and four-time Champ Car Champion (2004-2007) with Newman-Haas Racing. The 39-year-old driver for Dale Coyne Racing (based in Illinois), lives in the Shore Acres neighborhood with his wife, Claire, and children, Emma, 11, and Alex, 7. he and Claire moved here in 2005 and now reside just minutes from the downtown waterfront.
Bourdais is a veteran behind the wheel and a big winner. Between Champ Car and IndyCar series he has won a total of 36 races, not to mention several years racing Formula One cars (2008-2009), won the 12 Hours of Sebring and Petit Le Mans in 2015, and won the Rolex 24 at Daytona in 2014 and 2017.
“We thought it would be a really great area to raise a family,” Bourdais said during a phone interview. “We live on the water, so it’s easy to go kayaking and boating.” Don’t be surprised if you see Bourdais pedaling around town on his bike. “As
part of my workout regimen I bike a lot,” he said. “I like the Pinellas Trail, but will ride around the neighborhood, too.” Where do he and Claire like to dine when he’s not out on the race circuit? “We like to try new places, like along Central Avenue,” he said. But the couple also enjoys a taste of their native France. “We like Cassis a lot, the owners are friends and a lot of French people go there. Everyone finds their niche.”
The native of Le Mans, France, is also a big survivor after a terrifying crash during qualifying last year at Indianapolis that destroyed his car but did not crush his spirit. It was May 20, just months after the St. Pete win kicked off his season, when Bourdais suffered multiple fractures to his pelvis and a hip fracture in the fiery crash. While most predicted he was out for the rest of the season, he was determined to make a comeback - and he did. Only missing the Indy 500, he was approved by his physician after months of rehab to drive the final three races of the season. He plans to be on the pole March 11 for the start of this year’s Firestone Grand Prix Verizon IndyCar race. Bourdais first visited St. Pete for a race in 2003 and liked the weather and the vibe;

Building A Race Track
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BUILD A RACE TRACK? Months of planning and thousands of workers and volunteers go into the laborious job of creating a city street course for a grand prix race. At the helm of the logistics for the City of St. Petersburg is Tony Leno, manager of Event Recruitment and Management. Leno has been behind the scenes making the race happen since the first one 14 years ago. As the city liaison, he works with city staff and race management on the massive logistics of planning and construction of the track, overpasses, bleachers, garages, vendor areas and countless other details. He also works with downtown businesses to ease the inconvenience of street-closings, construction issues and parking. While race weekend can be a pain for some, Leno feels the benefits of spotlighting St. Petersburg as a major international race destination are undeniable. “Most streets downtown with the exception of Bayshore will remain open until the four days of race weekend,” he said. “We really do our best to try to keep downtown businesses running uninterrupted.” Here are a few interesting facts about building a race track from Leno: • The St. Pete track enlists some 250 construction workers and takes nearly 32 days to build. Tear-down and removal can take up to three weeks. • Building the street course safety wall system takes 18,000 feet of steel-reinforced concrete block, 44,000 feet of chain-link fencing and over 12,000 tires. • The course includes six race car paddocks and eight grandstands for spectators.

No bike? No problem. Rent a bike and take a spin around St. Petersburg on a Coast Bike rental. Look for the bright blue bikes all over town - there are 300 bikes at 32 hubs. But first you need to create an account either online at coastbikeshare.com/stpete or through the Social Bicycles app. Pick from three plans: Pay As You Go ($8 an hour), Monthly ($15 per month includes 60 minutes of daily ride time), or Annual ($79 per year includes

60 minutes of daily ride time). Student discount rates are available. Find a map with available bikes on the website or app, where you can reserve and pay in advance. If you’re feeling impromptu, you can create an account at one of 10 kiosks that take credit cards (look for the solar panel). The 8-speed cruisers complete with baskets are ideal for short spins around downtown, says Coast Bike spokesperson
Eric Trull. St. Pete is a bicycle-friendly city, he says, with miles of shared bike/vehicle lanes (look for the white bike-arrows in traffic lanes) and dedicated bicycles trails. Trull recommends the Healthy St. Pete loop trail, a one-mile easy spin that goes around Al Lang Stadium and the Dali Museum. Our SPL fave takes us along the waterfront and lovely Coffee Pot Bayou and around Snell Isle. Happy Trails!

Dr Angela Turner, Do A passion to help people live longer, healthier lives is at the heart of each day for Dr. Angela Turner. Part of the threeperson cardiology team at Bayfront Health in St. Petersburg and an assistant professor at the University of South Florida Health Morsani College of Medicine, Turner realized the importance of heart health at a young age. When she had palpitations at the age of 13, she saw her first cardiologist.
Luckily, she was fine, and the experience “peaked my attention at a young age to get into the medical field,” she admitted during a recent interview. Turner went on to become board certified in cardiology and even visited Africa three times on faith-based medical missions. Now living in St. Petersburg with her husband William and 8-year-old daughter Amelia, Turner counsels patients on taking charge of their lifestyle choices to maintain a healthy heart. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, causing one in four deaths, according to the American Heart Association. Nearly 40% of adults and 19% of youth are obese, according to 2016 research by the National Center for Health Statistics. Heart disease risk factors include diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking and obesity. “Unfortunately, due to our processed American diets and sedentary lifestyles, we are seeing weights go up and up along with these other conditions,” said Turner. “They go hand in hand, which is why it’s very important to address at a young age. We are so busy these days, we are heavily reliant on fast foods. We need to get back

to basics and cook meals at home with fresh fruits and vegetables, and stay away from processed foods and sugar.”
Tips for a Heart Healthy Breakfast
Stress, a common component in many people’s lives, may also be a contributing factor leading to heart problems. Heart palpitations can be an indicator of too much stress, which is why regular checkups are so important, said Turner. “Often, routine testing can detect small problems before they become big problems,” she said. Taking steps to alleviate stress is important. “This can be anything from getting more sleep to meditation, yoga, and exercise,” said Turner. While it is important to know your family medical history (high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol can be hereditary), you don’t have to go down the same path if you can find out early enough. “We can find these things much earlier now with simple blood work and testing,” said Turner. “Go to your primary care physician and get a routine checkup. That’s a good place to start .”

From The Sea Sea Salt Serves Up Heart-Healthy Dishes
BY CINDY COCKBURN Healthy St. Pete is a citywide community engagement and empowerment initiative that encourages the community to EAT, PLAY, SHOP and LIVE healthy. a perfect fit for the overall Healthy St. Pete initiative.” At a recent Saturday morning cooking class, Chef Ken explained to 15 guests in the Sea Salt kitchen that seafood is a great healthy option and Red Snapper is always popular. “It’s local, fresh, firm, doesn’t fall apart,” he told us. “It’s so fresh it’s practically just out of the water since seafood deliveries are made every day.”
Sea Salt is the vision of chef-owner Fabrizio Aielli, a nationally recognized chef who also owns Sea Salt’s sister restaurants: Barbatella and Dorona in Naples. Their dinner menu is extensive, and guests could start with caviar and then enjoy selections from the sea and ocean to land and farms.
Recently, Deputy Mayor joined Sea Salt restaurant Executive Chef Ken Tufo on ABC-TV to offer viewers an education in healthy cooking. They prepared Red Snapper with Tuscan Kale, Artichokes, Grapes & Truffle Vinaigrette in the TV kitchen on the set of Tampa Bay’s Morning Blend.
Diners begin their meal with a trio of imported salts and extra-virgin olive oil to give them an introduction to the restaurant’s central sea salt concept. You’ll find 130 different salts, a towering 22-foot high wine cellar (voted tops in 2017 by Wine Spectator) with thousands of bottles. Don’t worry, the knowledgeable sommelier, Jackie Eash, is usually there to assist in your decisionmaking.

Jose & Natalie Martinez and visitors. We want to reflect the chill personality of St. Pete.
How would you describe your sense of style?
Jose: Classic and confident, without being stylistically rigid. I will NOT wear dark brown and black together or a plushy sweats or sandals and socks. I like leather shoes without socks and will add personal flair as we all should (pocket square, great belt, etc.)
Why did you decide to live downtown?
Culture, community, diversity, the vibe. St. Pete is welcoming and will adopt you. It was a great opportunity to strive to be authentically local. As residents of downtown Old Northeast, we live within walking distance from the shop and Jose serves on the board of our condo association, we are a member of the St. Pete Area Chamber of Commerce, supporter of the Dali, American Stage, Infinity, CASA, and many other great local organizations.
What are your favorite dining and drinking establishments? In our quest to highlight St. Petersburg style-makers, we feature in this issue Jose and Natalie Martinez. The fashionable couple can often be found around town, or at Jose’s menswear boutique, Sartorial Inc.
Tell us a little about your backgrounds.
Jose is the owner of Sartorial Inc., a new men’s fashion boutique in downtown St. Pete. Natalie is a wedding coordinator and special events planner in St. Pete and all over the US. Her company is TheDayoftheEvents.com. Jose is originally from the Twin Island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, home of the best Carnival celebration in the world! Natalie was a US Army brat born in Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. We have two children - daughter Naadia is married and teaches at the University of Chicago Lab School and son Jelani is manager and chief

stylist at Sartorial Inc. As of early January we are new grandparents – Natalie gave birth to a beautiful baby girl!
How did Sartorial Inc happen?
Brainchild of Jelani and Jose who thought that St. Pete needed a male specialty boutique with a focus on affordable luxury wear that would cater to the St. Pete vibe. We carry the most comfortable shirts, limited edition jeans, Italian sport jackets, windproof sailing jackets, great athleisure performance and resort wear.
What was your inspiration behind opening your establishment?
To recapture the original nature of St. Pete and its style. St. Pete once was a paragon of fashion and style. Sartorial Inc is intended to reflect the personality of downtown and provide the option of “style for the classic male” to the residents
We love Annata for the wine, selection of charcuterie and braised pork shank. Also at 400 Beach the Lobster Mac & Cheese and the Oyster Trio and Tap selection are favorites.
What do you do when you are not working?
Take advantage of all the many wonderful events St. Pete has to offer such as festival and concerts in the park and local shopping, Saturday Morning Market, etc.
What is your favorite night out on the town?
A gala supporting a worthy event within the community, like only St. Pete can do. Go to a play/performance, have dinner with a great choice of wine and stimulating thought-provoking people and end the evening with live music. We also simply enjoy watching people from a great seat on Beach Drive or at the rooftop bar at the Birchwood Canopy.

BY LORI BROWN Ichicoro Ane opened downtown in the space formerly occupied by Café Alma and Station House. The original Ichicoro Ramen in Seminole Heights in Tampa opened two years ago in a smaller space than its newest big sister, Ichicoro Ane (pronounced ah-nay), meaning big sister in Japanese. The new space in St. Pete is almost 6,000 square feet designed as five separate spaces : the ramen room, the main dining room, private dining room, the main bar and the sipping lounge. Many traditional ramen eateries are small shops. The ramen kitchen here has its own space with an open kitchen (separate from the main dining room kitchen), menu, and it operates on a first-come, first-serve basis with no reservations. Just like in Tokyo, it is waitlist only. On this night, we shared a bowl of the Niku Udon. Diners can customize a bowl by adding “extras.” This not only adds more flavor fun, it also keeps the price lower if you choose not to add a lot of extras. For this bowl, we added the Ajitama - beni shoga seasoned egg -and Spicy Sauce 2 -

cauliflower (we couldn’t get enough of these).
The main dining room is “Izakayainspired” cuisine (small plates) and takes reservations. We sampled many items from the main kitchen. In no particular order, here are some of our favorites:
In the center of the restaurant, the main bar has a limited menu from the main kitchen (ramen cannot be ordered here). There are lots of great drinks, as well. A few of our favorites were The Fake Mustache (bourbon), Gin & Tonic (they make their own tonic in house), The Golden Saucer (gin), and The Black Mage made with activated charcoal.
Yukke (Lori’s favorite)- Japanese steak tartare of Wagyu beef, gochujang, sesame, fuji apple, egg yolk, konbu chicharrones Gyu Skewers - Wagyu beef, spring onion, teriyaki Sake No Misozuke - broiled salmon, miso butterscotch, lime, shoji, furikake Tonkatsu - breaded pork loin and bulldog sauce on top of cabbage and pickled mustard seeds Kani Gyoza - deviled crab-stuffed fried dumpling with Thai chili jelly on the side Okonomiyaki - vegetable pancake made with cabbage, Kewpie mayonnaise, Bulldog sauce, beni shoga, katsuobushi Buta Gyoza – ground pork stuffed dumpling, soy, sesame Gyu Steamed Bun - smoked beef shoulder, creamy gochujang mustard Hana Yasai - the most delicious fried
The large and elegant sipping lounge is nothing short of spectacular with Japanese murals painted by New York artists. Along with other concoctions, the bar features whiskeys grouped by characteristics rather than name or brand. For example, light and floral, fruity and spicy, rich and rounded, full bodied and smoky. Ichicoro Ane is a very welcome addition to the downtown restaurant scene. Lori Brown writes about the local food scene at stpetersburgfoodies.com

Top 10 Romantic Restaurants PHOTO BY DAVIS JASMIN
Kevin and Lori enjoying the Mushroom Tagliatelle at IL Ritorno BY KEVIN GODBEE Whether you’re a guy or a gal, it never hurts to have a handy list of romantic restaurants at your fingertips. Valentine’s Day is one of the biggies, but there are also anniversaries, birthdays, Mother’s Day, and other holidays. What makes a restaurant romantic? In general, it’s obviously the overall ambience. One of the important things to note is that many of the best restaurants in the St. Pete area do get noisy when busy. Normally, we would disqualify a loud place from being romantic, except if we did this, we would have a top two list and be missing some great places. So, for most of our recommendations, you may have to bear with a certain degree of discord to the occasional full-on cacophony. That’s just the way it is around here, although on this list Rococo and Selene are the quietest. All of the restaurants on the list offer outdoor seating, which can still be nice in

BY LORI BROWN The Reading Room is one of the best and most unique restaurants in St. Petersburg, with its own garden which is the inspiration for the menu. Located just a short 3.5 miles from downtown, in the same parking lot as freeFall Theatre, the Reading Room is worth venturing out to dine in such a fabulous establishment. On our visit, it was tough deciding what to order because everything sounded fantastic. We started with Our Daily Bread. This day’s bread was homemade with oatmeal, beets and wheat then served with homemade cultured butter, a little sea salt and fresh radish. Soft, flaky and delicious! Next up was the scrumptious Winter’s Roasted Roots made with beets, parsnips, spicy nuts and pumpernickel vinaigrette. I ate my half of the plate faster than Kevin could get a bite into his mouth. It was a flavor explosion of epic proportions. The overall soft textures of the roasted root vegetables complemented the crunchiness of the

nuts. This was served on top of a sweet potato puree that added a touch of creaminess to this already amazing dish. Did someone say kimchi? I love kimchi! We could not resist trying the Jjigae, which is kimchi soup with mushrooms, tofu and pickled greens. When they serve it, they bring the broth separately and pour it in the bowl at your table. The soup broth is tangy because of the kimchi, earthy from the wild mushrooms and the pickled greens just added that extra dimension. The tofu takes on all of the flavors and provides a different mouth feel. Executive Chef and co-owner Lauren Macellaro does an exceptional job at making every dish balance, not just with flavor but also with texture and visual appeal. Our shared entrees arrived at a nice pace. First, we had the Fish en Pappillote (cooked in parchment paper) – that night it was a Pumpkin (named due to its coloring) Swordfish with curried vegetables, black rice and saffron.
Steaming the fish in parchment paper made it come out perfectly. It cut like butter with just a fork. The black rice and curried vegetables were very good, but the star of the show was definitely the Swordfish. Our Steak entrée was a house dry-aged hanger steak cooked mid-rare and served with wheat berries, mushrooms, shallots and blue cheese. Cooking a tender hanger steak is not easy. It was cooked a perfect mid-rare, glistening with tenderness and bursting with flavor. Having no idea what a wheat berry is, we were surprised by the nutty texture and flavor when paired with the mushrooms and shallots sautéed in white wine. This entree was simply phenomenal. This restaurant is outstanding and completely elevates the level of dining in St Petersburg. Lori Brown writes about the local food scene at stpetersburgfoodies.com

Green Bench Brewery hosts a seminar in specialty beer during Tampa Bay Beer Week PHOTOS BY ALEXANDRIA JONES
BY ALEXANDRIA JONES How much do you really know about beer? Yes, you have your favorite big brands like Budweiser, Miller, or Heineken but are you a beer connoisseur who knows the difference between farmhouse, sour, or wild beers? This year’s Tampa Bay Beer Week will be an opportunity for everyone to learn more about beer and the local beer culture. Over the course of seven days, March 4-10, breweries, bars, restaurants, vendors, and distributors from Zephyrhills to St. Pete will throw events ranging from tastings to beer dinners to festivals. Beer is literally in Khris Johnson’s DNA. The co-owner and head brewer of Green Bench Brewing in St. Petersburg grew up watching his dad create IPAs, ales, and stouts using a home brewing kit. Once he realized home brewing was what he wanted to do, he went around to

different places drinking and tasting an assortment of beer to see what was out there. His first beer ever made as a home brewer is the popular Green Bench IPA. “I was a home brewer in college,” said Johnson. “My dad was a home brewer when I was a kid so I thought ‘If my dad can do it, I can do it.’ When I was 21, I bought my first home brew kit and started brewing my own beer.” Green Bench Brewing has participated in Tampa Bay Beer Week for the past five years. Johnson got involved while working at other breweries prior to opening Green Bench in 2013. This year, Green Bench is hosting the 5th Annual Foeder for Thought on March 9 as part of Tampa Bay Beer Week. For those who don’t know what a foeder is, it’s a huge barrel used for fermenting and it allows oxygen to enter the beer slowly.
Green Bench Brewing is the only brewery in the Southeast to have one. Foeder for Thought is an educationfocused event that this year will highlight fermentation-forward beers, said Johnson - meaning sour, wild, or farmhouse ales (no IPAs). Throughout the evening, attendees can taste unlimited samples of the highlighted beers from participating breweries and ask questions during the panel discussions and one-on-one interviews. For this year’s Foeder for Thought, Green Bench is partnering with beer podcast Good Beer Hunting(GBH) to co-host the event’s panel discussions. Johnson has known GBH host Michael Kiser for a few years and it was a collective decision to partner together. Kiser’s huge following from the podcast on top of his respected reputation in the beer industry makes this a match made in heaven, said Johnson.

“It was an ongoing discussion over the last few years when it would be appropriate and make sense for us to partner,” said Johnson. “We’re bringing another level of education to the festival; he’s used to doing these panels and discussing these topics.” The three panels go into detail about different topics like where to find sour
and wild beers in Florida, the retail aspect of selling those beers, and the Sour and Wild Ales Guild (SWAG). Featured beer will be from Creature Comforts Brewing Company and Jester King Brewery, with Chase Healey of American Solera brewery and Trevor Rogers of de Garde Brewing a few of the guest speakers.
Foeder for Thought March 9 6-9 pm Green Bench Brewing 1133 Baum Ave. N, St. Petersburg Admission $100; tickets can be purchased at Green Bench Brewing or online through Good Beer Hunting’s website at goodbeerhunting.com For updates check out Green Bench Brewing’s Facebook page. Hundreds of beer-related events will take place on both sides of the Bay including the 9th Annual Craft Beer Fest and Brewers Ball, both in Tampa. Of course, wines that are affordable under $20 are super treasure finds. It’s equally as awesome when a splurge buy drinks as a luxury, exclusive. When paired with the right foods quite a memorable moment and experience is created. Spanish wines are so pleasant and easy drinking. They pair beautifully with charcuturie, grilled meats, soft cheeses, light sauced pasta dishes, and of course, paella, ceviche or chorizo inspired dishes. I will feature three Spanish wines at three price points in this article that are simply wonderful.

Juan Gil Honoro Vera Organic Monastrell 2016 is a steal at $8. This wine shows beautiful aromatics of black fruit such as black raspberries and spring flowers. Notes of dark chocolate, spice, and ripe fruit lead to a well-balanced, full bodied texture with bright acidity and savory finish. A tremendous value and a pleasure to drink. Bodegas Carchelo C 2014 is a solid buy at $15. This fantastic red wine is a blend of 40% Monastrell, 30% Tempranillo, 20% Syrah, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. To quote my colleague, Ryan Rugg, “Carchelo C is a fun and complex blend dense purple and wild berry fruits run deep on the palate with great acidity up front, making this wine a no-brainer for pairing with food and especially cheese.” In fact, locally in Murcia, Jumilla, Spain this winery’s juice is used to make the famed “Drunken Goat” cheese that can be found in St Pete’s boutique cheese selections. Of course, chorizo sausage and saffron yellow rice would be the ideal pairing for this delicious wine, Ryan tells me. It’s full and juicy with great balance of weight, texture,
and loads of complex fruits and spice. Grab a bottle for your next hangout and give it a whirl, it’s purple pleasure in a glass. Parada de Atauta 2014 is worth every penny of a splurge at $30. It’s made with 100 percent tinto fino, a high quality red wine grape from the Ribera del Duero growing region. Rich, powerful, fragrant and elegant, this wine displays red and blackberry aromas, hints of violets, black pepper and mocha. On the palate, it’s ripe and delicious bringing sweet spicy and toasty notes. Pair it with grilled meats, cured meats, cheeses and light stews. How exciting to know that these wines are readily available at many retailers in St. Petersburg. Enjoy discovering these Spanish brands, you won’t be disappointed. Remember the pour-your-own wine bars where you could purchase a debit card, then select and pour your own glass of wine from a couple dozen spouts? They’re baaaack. Even better for some, there’s a beer version at Pour Taproom, 225 Second Avenue N., where you use a wristband instead of a card to pay by the ounce for sampling from 85 taps — including 75 beers and a half-dozen wines. The setting is industrial-warehouse in 2,300 square feet of space, so don’t expect chic. But if you are in the mood for checking out some new beer, this is the place! At the Tap Room at the Hollander Hotel, 421 Fourth Ave. N., Tuesday is $3 Craft Beer Night until 11 pm. There’s something for everyone in the outstanding selection from 21 taps. We love not only hanging at the bar in the cozy restaurant, but the front outdoor porch is great for catching the evening breeze and feeling like a part of the Burg’s downtown scene. Happy hours from 3 to 6 pm Monday through Friday include $6 appetizers, $5 martinis and margaritas, $4 house wines and $3 select craft beers. Try over 12 different whiskeys, enjoy light bites like steak crustini and ceviche, and mingle over music at Winter Whiskeyfest from 6 to 9 pm February 9, at Red Mesa Cantina’s (128 3rd Street S) new La Florida event space. Sounds like a sure winner, tickets are $75. Go to ilovetheburg.com for tickets.

Athleisure can be considered as a fashion industry movement, enabled by improved textile materials, which allows sportswear to be more versatile, comfortable, and fashionable. They allow for an easy wardrobe transition from your everyday routine to the gym. That means no more excuses! Many of the leading manufacturers of athleisure clothing include benefits such as

Romantic Florals That one, precisely chosen dress is a perfect way to express yourself BY MEGAN SIMONS Valentine’s Day is the time to celebrate, we express our emotions and devotions to our true loves and we build memories. But what is the one thing that stays in our minds the longest, what is the one thing that creates the warm and fuzzy feeling way after the day has come and passed? Remember Frank Sinatra singing “The way you look tonight”? What stays for a long time in our memories is the way she looked that night! The great thing about our fashion rules today is that there are not too many. There are three cardinal guidelines, which I follow consistently. • You have to be comfortable in what you are wearing • You have to be true to yourself, which means being unique, irreplaceable • You have to be exquisite, emphasizing all the best features that Mother Nature gifted you with When the occasion calls for romance, and a dress to impress in a feminine way, we should, without doubt, reach for floral prints. Nothing reverberates romance like pastel colors and flowers. The options are many. Flowers of all sizes are immensely prevalent trends for 2018, from tiny peasant-style patterns looking like they just stepped out of a Jane Austen novel, to large realistic prints of the modern-girl romance.
Fun and femininity combine is this dress with flared skirt trimmed in flowers by Joseph Ribkoff

We all have our favorite reds for special events, but I can assure you that there is one universally attractive color. Navy is the new black, just better and definitely more versatile. Combine navy with just about any color and you won’t make a mistake. Navy is great with white for the morning, with pastels for the day, and with bolder, brighter colors for the evening. It is a color appropriate for any occasion, but not as dark and more flattering for most skin tones than black.
SPL FASHION Clothes speak volumes about you, “fashion is an instant language” as Prada said. Go for formfitting, sensual style if that’s your preference. Or go for the contrary and select a wide, feminine flared skirt. This style was a hit on the runways for Spring 2018. Flared skirts have many advantages, they complement women of any height, they will thin and emphasize the waist area, and make the legs look longer. To finish your look match your shoes with bright colors on your dress,
or go for spectacularly chic gold pumps, a pair of sparkly earrings and a splash of your favorite fragrance. Now, I can imagine you entering the room, and “The way you look tonight” is taking all breaths away with the brilliance of YOU. Megan Simons is owner and CEO of Capota Trends and owner of Pippa Pelure, a women’s fine clothing and accessories boutique on Beach Drive in downtown St. Petersburg.

Snell Island Waterfront views and historic charm are the essence of living in this upscale enclave
An oasis of tranquility and beauty Photos by Kathleen M. Finnerty courtesy of Floor Coverings International, Inc.
Snell Isle, just minutes from the hustle and bustle of downtown in northeast St. Petersburg, is an oasis of tranquility and beauty. Along the winding main thoroughfare, Snell Isle Boulevard, one finds lush, tropical foliage amid perfectly manicured lawns, tree-lined streets and stately residences both old and new. Patrick and Gloria Bauer decided Snell Isle was where they wanted to establish

a residence when they left Illinois in March 2015. Their spacious 4,265-squarefoot waterfront home offers everything the couple wanted in a St. Petersburg residence – a breezy Florida feel, plenty of space for outdoor entertaining and quick proximity to downtown. Built in 1986, the four-bed five-bath home features leaded glass French doors from the kitchen and dining area,
opening onto the waterfront terrace to maximize views and accessibility. Perfect for the outdoor lifestyle is the travertine patio with infinity-edge heated saltwater pool, dining area with plenty of seating and a built-in grill, and double-sided fireplace. The Bauers recently renovated the home with the help of Floor Coverings International, adding walnut flooring throughout and upgrading the bathrooms, including deep soaking tubs.

“To enhance the value of this beautiful home, Gloria and Patrick realized that certain upgrades would be required to bring them up to date with latest design trends and increase the quality of materials used throughout their home,” said Lee Rohner, president of Floor Coverings International of St. Petersburg. “Their remodeling project included upgrading from laminate to walnut floors throughout the main living areas of the home, new upgraded carpet in all bedrooms, fully remodeled bathrooms and decorative backsplashes in the kitchen, pantry and wet bar area.”
LOVING SNELL ISLE The island was the perfect choice for the active couple, who enjoy outdoor activities including bicycling and boating. Patrick, CEO of Heartland Dental, golfs at nearby Vinoy Renaissance Country Club while Gloria enjoys daily walks. “We chose Snell Isle because it’s on the Bay and close to everything downtown,” says Gloria. Their favorite places include The Mill for dining and “having drinks on the front porch of the Vinoy,” said Gloria. “It’s so relaxing and such a beautiful view.”
When guests come to visit, she whisks them downtown for Saturday Morning Market or a festival on the waterfront, she adds. When it comes to dining, “we like to go anywhere along Beach Drive or the Sundial restaurants.” One unexpected bonus of living on Snell Isle – the wildlife. “We didn’t realize when we chose to live here that dolphins were literally in our back yard,” Gloria said. “We love looking out and seeing them.”

ABOUT SNELL ISLE Now one of St. Petersburg’s most upscale and desirable neighborhoods, Snell Isle was once nothing more than a low-lying mangrove swamp. When C. Perry Snell, a Kentucky pharmacist, came to visit the area in 1899, he envisioned a residential waterfront enclave and invested in the property of what is now Coffee Pot Bayou and Snell Island. In 1911, he began developing Snell Island. In 1926, Snell opened what is now the 18-hole Vinoy Renaissance Resort Golf Club on Snell Isle. A few years later in 1928, he gifted land to the St. Petersburg Woman’s Club which still stands today on Coffee Pot Bayou and is on the U.S. Register of National Historic Places. Snell Isle is completely residential, with several apartment communities, two schools, and two churches. Many original homes from the 1920s still exist today, with charming European and Spanish architecture. More than 80 percent of homes on Snell Isle enjoy waterfront views, some of the Bay and others on interconnected waterways.

throughout the city’s arts districts and it’s clear that Imagine Museum will be a major player in Tampa Bay cultural arts tourism, joining a flourishing arts community along the Gulf Coast of Florida. “This will be an incredible addition to the city’s cultural assets and will be yet one more reason for tourists to visit,” said Wayne Atherholt, director of the Office of Cultural Affairs for the City of St. Petersburg. “Imagine Museum continues to expand the arts west along Central
Avenue following the relocation of the Chihuly Collection in the Central Arts District. The educational opportunities around glass will be phenomenal. The museum’s location just north of the Warehouse Arts District makes it well positioned to attract visitors.” STUDIO GLASS A bright blue three-story exterior (it was previously a bank and a charter school) hints at the colorful treasures that lie within. temple of awe and inspiration in groundbreaking glass technique, and most of all imagination. The collection spans the American Studio Glass Movement from its birth in the 1960’s to the present. The movement started in 1962 with pioneers Harvey Littleton and Dominick Labino at the Toledo Museum of Art when they created and built a small furnace for melting glass designed for an individual artist studio. Studio glass is extremely diverse ranging in size and subject matter from nature and the human form to geometric and abstract. Techniques include blowing, casting, intricate flame work, layering, grinding and polishing. “It is our goal to educate people about
this particular glass movement,” said Jane Buckman, the museum’s deputy director. “We give established and emerging glass artists an opportunity to show in a fine arts museum.” THE COLLECTION The museum was the vision of local glass collector and artist Trish Duggan who contracted with Habatat Galleries in Royal Oak, Michigan, to curate and compile the stunning collection. Visitors are greeted by an open, two-story light-filled lobby complete with a Kahwa coffee café and large museum shop overflowing with jewel-tone glass art to take home. Step inside the dimly lit white and black galleries with dramatic lighting, and the art often appears to float in mid-air. The visitor walks through time as each gallery
moves through the decades of the Studio Glass Movement.
The permanent collection contains more than 450 pieces by 55 glass artists from across the country, although all are not on exhibit at once. Yes, there is a nod to glass pioneer Dale Chihuly with several pieces of his early work. What makes this collection special is that many of the artists are still alive and working, said Buckman. For grand opening week in late January, she was expecting hundreds of glass artists and collectors from across the country to converge on Tampa Bay and Sarasota. The museum opening was being held in conjunction with Sarasota Glass Weekend.

The father of Surrealism, Salvador Dalí, meets the father of Conceptual Art, Marcel Duchamp, in the Dali Museum’s latest exhibit. Dedicated to the friendship between the controversial French-born Duchamp (1887-1968) and the eccentwric Spanish-born Dalí, the show explores the common ground shared by two equally inventive, intelligent and irreverent minds. Duchamp and Dali maintained a lasting bond of friendship and mutual admiration throughout their careers. I first discovered Anna Maria Island while meandering along the Gulf of Mexico preparing to write my first book. My Frommer’s Guide to Florida assignment featuring the West Coast was published over 20 years ago. Not much has changed. Back then, the seven-mile-long, eco-friendly Anna Maria was way, way off anybody’s radar. Today, it’s been rated the third best island in the U.S. by Trip Advisor.

Romantic St. Augustine PHOTOS/COURTESY FLORIDAHISTORICCOAST.COM
BY MARCIA BIGGS St. Augustine, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways on a romantic weekend getaway. An easy 3-hour jaunt from Tampa Bay, I have grown to love the unique charm and history of St. Augustine more with each visit. St. Augustine is all about the history – it recently celebrated 500 years. That’s why it’s worth the splurge to stay at one of more than two dozen historic bed and breakfast inns located in the Historic District. The esteemed St. Francis Inn Bed and Breakfast is considered the “Nation’s Oldest Inn” built in 1791 as a Spanish residence. With its tropical courtyard, guests are invited to sip a sangria and nosh on social hour appetizers and nightly desserts made fresh daily. Rooms and suites are charming and romantic.

Our corner room with a fireplace and whirlpool tub offered a private balcony where we could kick back and listen to the soothing clip-clop of the carriages on the street below.
Modern but equally romantic is the Casa de Suenos on Cordova Street, which is close to just about everything. The Mediterranean-style Casa presents breakfast buffets and social hours in
a bright, airy dining room, perfect for socializing with interesting guests from around the world. The best part about staying in the Historic District is it allows you to park your car and forget it. St. Augustine is a walker’s delight. For a good introduction, start your visit with an Old Town Trolley Tour. Then head out and enjoy! Stroll the brick-lined streets and pop into the many shops and boutiques and art galleries. In St. Augustine’s early days, St. George Street was the main street, and today the thoroughfare is still considered the heart of the city. However, no trip to the Nation’s Oldest City would be complete without time spent traversing some of the roads less traveled. St. George is just one of many enchanting streets that make up the city’s historic downtown district.
TRAVEL mix with jazz clubs, outdoor cafes and European bistros. St. Augustine harbors a strong cultural scene with a diversity of talented artists. The First Friday Art Walk has gained “must-do” status for both residents and visitors. What could be more romantic than strolling the city’s historic streets, perusing more than 20 galleries. You’ll find everything from fine art paintings to handmade jewelry, ceramics, glass, photography and sculpture. Galleries are spread out among five distinct districts. Parking is free at the San Sebastian Winery on King Street where you can hop aboard free Artwalk trolleys from 6 to 9 p.m.
One thing that makes St. Augustine so attractive to me is the amazing dining scene. A diverse array of excellent restaurants makes it difficult to select where to go. Highly recommended for a romantic evening is the award-winning Michael’s Tasting Room with its extensive wine selection and innovative dishes in a casually elegant atmosphere. Michael’s Tasting Room has received numerous honors and national recognitions. Wine Spectator awarded the wine list its Award of Excellence for the 10th year in a row. Chef Michael has also been recognized as Best Chef of St. Augustine by several the city’s publications.
CLASSICALLY ROMANTIC Above: Patio dining at Old City House. The St. Augustine Music Festival Below: Tapas at Michael’s Tasting Room features two weekends of live classical music performances during the last two weeks in June every year. Worldclass musicians from the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra join internationally known guest artists to perform in the acoustically splendid St. Augustine Cathedral Basilica. Concerts are free with donations accepted. This year, the festival is set for June 21-23 and June 28-30 with concerts beginning at 7:30 pm. For more information, go to staugustinemusicfestival.org For information on St. Augustine, contact St. Augustine Ponte Vedra and The Beaches Visitors and Convention Bureau, 29 Old Mission Ave., 800-653-2489 floridashistoriccoast.com Aviles Street
Other recommended restaurants perfect for couples (intimate, not loud) include Old City House, Collage, and Catch 27. All offer fine dining and wines, and a unique “St. Augustine experience.” One of my favorite lunch spots is the Café Alcazar (not open for dinner), located in the lower level of the beautiful Lightner Museum. Café Alcazar sits in what was once the indoor pool of the Alcazar Hotel built in 1889 by Henry Flagler. Combine a visit to the magnificent art galleries here with lunch at the Café. There are plenty of great drinking holes in this college town, but in recent years the level of sophistication has kicked up a notch. Martini and craft cocktail bars

Dream Wedding Part of Farm’s Community Giving Many careers can be hugely demanding. But the job of school teacher is one career choice that takes a special kind of person – someone who gives their heart and soul to educating the next generation of adults who will be leading this state and this country. Up before the sun, with long days on their feet, dedicated teachers are often selfless and giving, investing personal time and emotional support to young children and teens. Old McMicky’s Farm, a children’s educational farm in the rolling countryside of Odessa, wants to reward a local schoolteacher with a free all-inclusive wedding at its beautiful lakefront venue. In the past four years, Old McMicky’s has donated eight free weddings to active U.S. military and veterans as part of a community giving program called “Mission I Do.” In 2018, the Farm will award a free dream wedding worth $20,000 to a schoolteacher in the Tampa Bay area through its “Teachers ROCK” giving program.
“Teachers make such a huge difference in the lives of children and families in our Tampa Bay community, we thought a great way for Old McMicky’s Farm to show our appreciation was to help a teacher start a family of their own with this Dream Wedding gift,” says Ralph Zuckerman, owner of Old McMicky’s Farm.
Vote Now! Go to oldmcmickeys.com to read about each finalist couple and view a 2-minute video. Then cast your vote! Hurry, online voting will close on February 7. You can vote daily.
While nominations have closed, the public is now urged to VOTE for the candidate couple of their choice on the farm’s web site at oldmcmickys.com. Candidates were chosen from public and private schoolteachers in grades Pre-K through 12 in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco counties who entered the giveaway before the application deadline of January 5. Old McMicky’s Farm offers educational group and individual farm tours, kid’s birthday parties, beautiful barn weddings and corporate event rentals as part of their services to the general public.

KIDS RADIOTHON In its 10th year, the US 103.5 FM Cares for Kids Radiothon raised a record-breaking $406,488 for Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, the regional Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. During the two-day on-air event in December, supporters presented checks and kept the phone lines ringing as grateful patients and families shared their personal stories of care and healing. Part of what made this year’s Radiothon such a success was a generous matching donation from former Tampa Bay Lightning player, Vinny Lecavalier. A long-time supporter of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, Lecavalier pledged to match every donor dollar up to $200,000.

WILLIAMS PARK REDUX The revitalization of Williams Park continues. In 2016 and 2017, the park in the heart of downtown served as a venue for festivals, film screenings and monthly food truck rallies. Local efforts to make the park a true hub of activity show no signs of stopping. On January 13, the City introduced Second Saturdays at Williams Park, which will be a monthly happening. The inaugural event from 6-9 pm featured live music by Mighty Good & Strong Band, as well as a beer and wine garden, a cigar lounge hosted by Central Cigars, a vendor fair, a food court, and a kids zone. Come April 21, Williams Park will be the site of the annual St. Pete Earth Day festival, filling the park with green, eco-friendly vendors and crafts, demonstrations, sustainability and clean energy info, kids activities, live music and more.
Morton has practiced law in the Tampa Bay Area for over 30 years. She began her career as an Assistant State Attorney and opened her own trial practice in St. Petersburg handling labor and employment cases. She served as General Counsel of the Tampa Police Benevolent Association and the Tampa Firefighters. She was named General Counsel to C1 Bank and guided the bank through the successful merger with Bank of the Ozarks. “Diane has a true love of the arts and is a consummate professional in all the tasks she undertakes. We are lucky to have her and are excited about her advancing the mission of the Warehouse Arts District,” said Rob Kapusta, WADA Vice President.

SHOOT, WE’RE GOOD The upscale and trendy Garden&Gun magazine sang the praises of the Burg’s emerging culinary, craft beer and cocktail scene in the October/November issue. In an article titled “The South’s Five Best Food Towns,” St. Petersburg joined Birmingham, AL; Greenville, SC; Knoxville, TN.; and Raleigh, NC, as the editors’ top 5 picks as rising stars.
Here’s an excerpt: “The craft beer craze jumped the bay from Tampa with a vengeance a couple of years back, which in turn begat micro-distilleries and other food businesses. The new Ichicoro Ane izakaya, for example, will feature ramen, and the city also now boasts the Mandarin Hide’s craft cocktails and the artisanal pickles of the Urban Canning Company. St. Pete has even attracted interest from afar: New York’s Empire Oyster launched a pop-up oyster bar in the Edge District’s Intermezzo Coffee & Cocktails. Chefs who worked together in Asheville opened the Reading Room, building a menu around produce from their own garden. And serial restaurateur Michael Mina, with Don Pintabona—former executive chef at Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Grill— parachuted in with Locale Market (FarmTable Cucina at Locale).” (Note: See reviews of Ichicoro Ane and the Reading Room in this issue of SPL)

Florida Orchestra/Sting Gala Raises $1.5 Million The Florida Orchestra’s 50th anniversary gala on December 9 featuring a sold-out performance by renowned artist Sting, was the orchestra’s most successful fundraiser ever, bringing in a record $1.5 million to support TFO’s growing community programs. Some 2,000 lucky patrons were treated to “An Intimate Evening with The Florida Orchestra and Sting” at the Mahaffey Theater, under the baton of Music Director Michael Francis. The 16-time Grammy winner performed symphonic arrangements of his biggest hits, including Fields of Gold, Roxanne and Every Breath You Take. In addition to the concert, more than 300 patrons attended a reception and catered dinner with Sting as part of the gala event. The $1.5 million raised through the gala includes fundraising donations and concert-only ticket sales. The funds will support TFO’s free community programs, which last season reached about 80,000 people in hospitals, schools, parks, museums and more, as well as artistic initiatives that bring top talent to Tampa Bay stages.

Gold & Diamond Source Holiday Party Julie Weintraub’s Hands Across the Bay partnered with Wheels of Success to present three hardworking families in need with cars full of presents at Gold & Diamond Source’s Annual VIP Holiday Party. The key to success is sometimes really a “key” and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house as the attendees cheered on the car recipients. Thank you to our Build-a-Car sponsors, PureLife Medi-Spa, Mel and Laura Klinghoffer of A1HR, and Brian & Elena Artze. It was a glamorous evening celebrating a record breaking year of success for Gold & Diamond Source, but the best part of all was the heartfelt emotion and love surrounding the event. Saturday Morning Market Saturday Morning Market is a MUST-DO for anyone! Since 2002, the seasonal (October through May) outdoor market has been attracting thousands each Saturday to downtown St. Pete’s waterfront for a morning filled with arts and crafts, live music - and especially food. Many Burgers come weekly just to hang out at the umbrella tables, listen to
music and nosh. Dozens of vendors offer a delectable array of fresh pastries and baked goods, exotic coffees and teas, and artisan foods from around the world including cheeses, salsas, jams, honey and more. The market is popular for its farm vendors who bring fresh produce to the masses.
One of our longtime favorites is Worden Farm, an organic farm in Punta Gorda that sets up a splendid tent every week. The market is located in the Al Lang Field parking lot (the corner of 1st Street and 1st Avenue S). Hours are 9 am to 2 pm; saturdaymorningmarket.com Marcia Biggs PHOTOS BY MARCIA BIGGS
