Build New vs Remodel Deciding which to do can be an important decision PHOTOS/TRIPLE POINT DESIGN BUILD
Everyone wants their home environment to be a reection of their own personal style, and functional for their needs. For some, entertaining spaces are the focal point of the home, while others may value the comfort of a more intimate living space. As design trends evolve and lifestyles alter the need for space, contemplating change often involves weighing the options of building a new home or remodeling and renovating the existing home. In St. Pete, especially with waterfront homes, there are distinct challenges and opportunities in each scenario. New construction oers a blank slate to create your dream home, but must adhere

to strict guidelines and often must meet zoning and neighborhood requirements. Remodeling or renovating can preserve the character of an existing home while modernizing and expanding, but poses other challenges especially in our historic neighborhoods. The stress-free path to your new home will most likely begin with the right builder. Here we take a look at two projects that TriplePoint Design Build executed, one new construction and one renovating an existing home. Both are waterfront properties, which require FEMA compliance. With over 35 years in the industry, CEO Neal Fiske specializes in the intricacies of FEMA standards.
SPL LIVING The Jones Project: Whole House Remodel For 15 years, the Jones family loved their beachfront Florida Craftsman single story home. Built in the 1940’s it exuded Florida charm. Their growing family demanded more space, which led them to expand/remodel the small, outdated, one story home. A small lot size meant expanding upward with a second floor, and raising the low ceilings on the first floor. This required two separate construction cycles, the first of which began with the second floor. And all of the renovations, including a new pool, had to be done within the original footprint of the home. Owner Dr. Glen Jones says, “We were very fortunate to have a builder that immediately understood our desires and was able to deliver the quality that we demanded throughout the entire process.” The end result for the Jones family was a four bedroom, five bath home with a detached garage, resort style pool, spa and outdoor kitchen. All on a barrier island with views of McPherson Bayou and the historic Don Cesar Hotel. Dr. Glen Jones and Dr. Margaret Young speak about their remodel experience: What were your special requirements? Since this is our forever home, we wanted high quality materials and the latest innovations for energy efficiency, technology and audio/visual equipment, with state of the art security.
Of course the kitchen was designed to allow for a professional chef to prepare a gourmet meal, but also convenient enough to make a simple sandwich.
Which rooms are important to you? Every room has spectacular architectural detail and was thoughtfully planned out.
How do you feel about living in St. Pete? Financially, moving would have made more sense, however location is everything and our location is second to none. St. Petersburg rocks. The growth and influx of young vibrant people in the last
decade is truly remarkable. The cultural events, art galleries, sports teams and limitless outdoor activities makes St. Pete an ideal place to live and raise a family. TriplePoint has won the 2019 NARI Contractor of the Year Award, as well as the Local NARI Contractor of the Year Award for this Entire House Remodel.

The Walker Project: New Construction New to the St. Pete area, Steven Walker fell in love with a piece of property on Big Bayou that held potential challenges in building the new home he was looking for. Not sure of feasibility and building requirements, he consulted with TriplePoint Design Build. Neal Fiske’s expertise in FEMA compliance, zoning and process made him immediately comfortable with the partnership. Says Walker, “I got a great team that was always available to answer questions and problem solve the changes or issues that I had.” The 2,900-square-foot contemporary home was completed in just over a year, complete with dock and an integrated pool/ lanai. Inside, open airy spaces offer plenty of showplaces for an eclectic art collection. A key concept for Walker was “design with art in mind,” as he puts it. The wine cellar, as well, had to be a novel design with artistic detail. The resulting showcase is a climate controlled, WiFi accessible 12-square-foot space with custom Stact wine storage racks providing label out and cork out storage configurations.

Steven Walker speaks about his build-new experience: What were your special requirements? The site was paramount. I wanted a water view and the resulting home to take full advantage of the setting. Openness was important and the house literally opens to the back as a result. Which rooms are important to you? I wanted each space to be of interest in some way so that visitors and I would linger and feel welcome. I chose TriplePoint because of a reputation for quality and experience with the requirements and challenges of waterfront homes in the area. How do you feel about living St. Pete? It’s a truly unique city that seems full of possibility. I love the depth and strength of the visual and performance arts here. There’s a vibrancy and balance between cosmopolitan life and the natural that I appreciate. A diversity of people and thought combine to bring forth the new and interesting.

Blind Ambition PHOTO S/BUDGET BLINDS
Control your shades and blinds effortlessly through home automation systems. Smart, connected technology is now integrated into every part of our homes, from the living room to the kitchen and even the bathroom. What could be smarter, then, to include opening and closing of window blinds and shades – something performed twice a day or more in many homes and offices. Smart window treatments are at your command – literally. Automated shades are one of the hottest trends right now, particularly in the Tampa Bay region, says Samantha Roberts, co-owner of Budget Blinds of North St. Petersburg. They can be contained to a single window or room, or over an entire house. Budget Blinds offers state-of-the-art Lutron automated shading systems. “Motorized shades are very popular with people who have home voice-command centers like Alexa and Siri,” says Roberts, who partners with her husband Shaun Roberts. “It allows you to control or schedule your shades and lighting with a simple voice command.” Homeowners can control blinds and shades from a smart phone, tablet or laptop, no matter where you are or create personalized lighting schedules that change with the seasons. In addition, programmable features allow you to use heating or cooling only when you need it for maximum energy efficiency. Automated blinds and shades can reduce the wear and tear that comes from a manual operation and can be set on timers to open and close at your preferred time of day.

Lutron shades are energy-efficient and available in a wide variety of materials. In addition to convenience and energy savings, motorized shades provide a safer environment for families. “We are seeing more demand for motorization as a safety measure for families with small children,” says Roberts. “They eliminate dangling cords and reduce the risk of accidents for children and pets.” Business owner Geno O’Dor has installed the Lutron system at both his 10,000-square-foot office/warehouse and his 3,200-square-foot St. Petersburg home. The office lighting is automated to turn on and off at scheduled times. At home, he has selected automated blackout shades for his children’s bedrooms and his home movie theater. “The shades are scheduled to rise every morning at 7 am,” he says. “In the movie theater, when the movie starts, the shades close and when the lights go on, the shades go up.” He uses the Amazon Alexa voice command technology and claims the Lutron system “works effortlessly” throughout the home. Even O’Dor’s outdoor lighting and thermostat are controlled through Lutron. “I consider myself a tech junkie,” says O’Dor. “But I’m still learning.” To learn more about automated blinds and shades, contact Samantha Roberts of Budget Blinds at sroberts@budgetblinds.com or call (727) 522 6695.

Shower Power Big, beautiful Bathrooms are gaining popularity PHOTOS/GRAND KITCHEN + BATH
Nine in 10 renovating homeowners change the style of their master bathroom during upgrades. The shower continues to replace the tub, says Julie Burch, co-owner of Grand Kitchen + Bath in St. Petersburg. According to a 2017 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study, showers are the most common splurge for homeowners considering master bathroom renovations. More than a quarter (27%) of those surveyed, removed their bathtubs during master bathroom renovations to make room for a larger shower, with many opting for rainfall showerheads and dual showers. Other bathroom trends: • Natural-looking pebble floor showers with built-in benches and niches, and handheld showerheads which make it easier for cleaning. • Vessel, or bowl-shape, abovecabinet sinks have gone the way of the VW Beetle. Built-in rectangular sinks are the style now, and clean simple white Shaker cabinets are the most common request in Tampa Bay, with grays trending now. • Floridians love wood floors, and waterproof vinyl wood flooring can’t be beat. It’s perfect for the bathroom or the entire house. • For those wanting tubs, standalone soaker tubs are the top request. They come in various sizes and shapes. For those considering selling their homes, updated kitchens and baths remain the best return on investment, says Burch. Some homeowners may lean towards updating to fit trends that may not be their style, thinking it will help sell the home. One tip she gives about
remodeling a kitchen or bathroom is to consider where you plan to be in five years. “I tell people if you plan to be living in the same house in five years, get what you want now when you remodel,” says Burch. “Don’t worry about what the trends will be in five or ten years because a lot of homes end up getting torn down or remodeled by the new owners. Get what you want so you can be happy living in the home.” How do you start with a remodel? Find one thing you like – a sink, tiles, a countertop or cabinets – and design or build around it. “It can be anything to get started,” says Burch. “For example, one of our customers loved one particular backsplash, so that’s what we built around.” Homeowners in the over-50 demographic are increasingly interested in the benefits of accessibility. In the bathroom this can mean curb-less shower entries, built-in benches, comfort-height toilets and even touch-activated faucets. Termed “aging in place,” the concept takes into consideration addressing needs as we age in the home, or the addition of an elderly parent to a household. Installing a grab bar in the shower, says Burch, may be something to consider before you actually need one. Finally, the magazine basket next to the toilet may well be a relic of the past. In the survey, homeowners admit to using mobile devices in their bathrooms at least once per week, making wi-fi connectivity in the loo something to consider. Top activities include emailing (40%), texting (32%), talking on the phone (27%) and utilizing social media (26%). Social media use in the bathroom more than doubles for millennials.

time of day, and all are controlled from a smart phone app. One the coolest things we saw at the Easy Living With Technology showrooms was a fireplace with a built-in TV screen in a frame above the mantel. With the click of a button, a silent motorized “art shade” lowers over the screen, transforming it into a virtual Monet. TV gone, poof. Even the kitchen is going high-tech. Samsung’s Family Hub refrigerator has a screen on the door that has voice activation features, with built-in cameras that allow users to see inside the fridge from a smart phone app (yes, you are almost out of milk), leave messages, stream TV, and even find quick recipes through an Allrecipes app. The fridge interconnects to Samsung’s SmartThings technology and phones.
SPL LIVING Get smart Technology is constantly changing and evolving. Your options will vary greatly depending on where you decide to live. Will your home have access to streaming movies and high definition television? If you work from home, will you have seamless WiFi capability from room to room? High-speed internet and strong WiFi connections throughout a home are more important than ever. The wireless industry has grown and changed much over the last decade with the iPhone, Android and app market exploding. As we move toward 5G, prospective home and condo buyers will need to consider connectivity as a major factor before purchasing. “Older homes, new homes, condos all have different challenges,” says Mike Stram, owner of Easy Living With Technology in St. Petersburg and a certified technology designer. “If you build new, you can have anything you want and you should hire a technology designer to work with your architect and builder. You’ll want fluid WiFi coverage in every nook and cranny of a home, including your yard and dock. New homes will want streaming video, and internet in all rooms, plus the apps on your mobile device need strong
WiFi to communicate to a home network which connects to your lighting, thermostat and shades.” Your home’s network is the foundation of a smart home, says Stram, and today’s homeowner will need a wire to every WiFi access point. Auto-handoff or fast roaming WiFi is what it’s called. “Years ago, you had little choice and used only one WiFi for the entire home,” explains Stram, who designs technology for homes across the country. “Later, multiple WiFi would be installed throughout a house, but in today’s world our WiFi has become smart enough to act as your own private cell network so no matter where you are in the home, your device will automatically attach to the strongest signal.” Stram has devised the Technology Closet®, which can be built into new homes or retrofitted into older ones. They are generally 9-square-feet (3’x3’ ), says Stram, and centrally located in the home. They contain all the cables and audio/video/music electronics in one serviceable spot instead of having exposed wiring and equipment all over the home in every room. SPL LIVING Condos Getting Smarter Technology keeps advancing but homeowners in condos may not be easily able to upgrade. Condo purchasers need to research their options before moving in and finding they have one internet provider and a limit on speed. In a single-family home you can change providers, or go from internet to satellite, but in a highrise the developer or builder has already made the decision for you. While newer buildings will undoubtedly offer higher speed connections, some older condo buildings leave you with no choice, wiring may even run through walls of neighboring condos.
Lusting after a home theater? Good news - they’re back, according to Mike Stram. King has one in his condo with only two seats and a 100-inch TV screen. (He replaced a projector and four seats.) The demand for home theaters is increasing, Stram says, as more and more people shun the idea of going out for staying home. Many, like King, are opting for large, high-def TV screens instead of a budgetbreaking projector and movie screen. “A lot of families are asking for home theater rooms,” says Stram. “With the price dropping, people are getting bigger and bigger TVs.”
Living in a smart home is important for Bryan King, who loves the ease of a high-tech lifestyle at the push of a button. He has lived in four homes across the country, all retrofitted or built as smart homes. Now living in the Ovation condo building with his wife in downtown St. Pete, King’s 3750- square-foot condo was tricked out when he bought it a year ago. Stram did a modified version of his Technology Closet®, his laundry room is outfitted with a white Technology Rack, which blends right in with the other laundry appliances. It can be custom built to fill any space. This is the “brain center” of his highly electronic lifestyle.
Looking for a technology designer? Mike Stram recommends making sure they are licensed and certified by CEDIA (Custom Electronics Design and Installation Association) and HTA.org (Home Technology Association).
From lighting to music to shades, King loves having a home automation system. “It’s nice to have options from anywhere. I can use my iPhone or iPad, push buttons on the wall, or go through voice-command, Alexa,” he says. “For example, when we are out with friends at a restaurant, I can program the lighting and music to be on when we arrive home.”

their own spaces. His interest eventually led to his first position out of college at Scandinavian Design Gallery in New York City. Fast forward many years later, Davids dream to open his own contemporary design firm was realized. The inception of DoMA had a rough start, which never stopped David King. He was robbed of his life savings, allocated to start his dream of opening his own store, in a business transaction and was left with only $6,000. He was determined to not let this quash his dream. He reached out to everyone he knew for help, recruited friends to help paint, work with him on rebuilding, and he got lines of credit. You may ask, how did it all turn out? To date since opening his first store in 2006, DoMA has never had a negative year. David is an expert with interior design, trends and continues to expand his craft. He has a great passion for St. Pete with the city’s artistic focus, and a priority for him is giving back to the community. DoMA has raised over $150,000 in the past ten years to support local key charities; All Children’s Hospital Guild, Children’s
SPL LIVING Cancer Center of Tampa, Ronald McDonald House, Suncoast Center, St. Pete Free Clinic, Lost Angels Animal Rescue, Dogma Pet Rescue, Pawlicious Pooch Animal Rescue, and Claybaker Foundation for Veterans Assistance. DoMA is not a typical furniture store. They have a customized approach as most everything offered may have several options made to order. David hires the best in the business to assist his customers, and every sales person is a personally selected interior designer. If you are not sure where to start with commercial or residential decorating by adding a piece or two, one room, an entire house or business, there are three ways to shop. One, select your purchase(s) and the design sales staff will assist with variations offered on your specific selections. Two, the design sales staff will assist you by making selections and offer guidance fulfilling your desires. Three, you can hire a design sales staff member to come to your location and personally assist you in a specific design. If you have hired your own interior designer, no problem. They can

Leather and performance fabrics are favored by DoMA customers, and this can help you decide what is best for you: Leather Leather is a beautiful, natural and longlasting product. It is very easy to clean, warm in the winter and cool in the summer. DoMA carries the finest top-grain leathers - most are of European origin coming from the best parts of Italy. Some leathers are more protected and are recommended for families with kids, and some less protected. The less protected leather is the more prestigious and tends to be soft to the touch. How much fun can we have transforming one monotonous outfit into something spectacular or discreetly highlighting the features of your look, with the right accessories. With so many available choices, you can easily but strongly, distinguish a character of an outfit and send the message – this is my style, my unique look. There’s a wide variety of options how to accessorize an outfit from head to toe, but let’s talk about layers. Layers of necklaces are a great way to make an item worn in the past look fresh and updated. Take one of your favorite necklaces and try to add another one from your collection. Chances are, considering your personal taste and style, that you may wear some of them successfully together, complimenting a plain dress or top.
Don’t be afraid to break the rules in wearing your special jewels with every day bijouterie or play with contrasting metal colors. Just keep in mind that it is essential for the balance of your layered look, to combine various lengths. Very often I’m finding that three is the magic number, and I like to start with the shortest one, working my way down with two more lengths, for the depth and dimension. Mixing textures and elements, like stones with chains, metals with pearls, will immensely help to create interest and looks chic. Include a new exciting piece, that communicates who you are, to your existing collection, it will invigorate your look. No matter what occasion you are dressing for, your jewelry will help you look and feel your best. Wear what makes you happy.

Work of Art Offices with art pay dividends in productivity PHOTOS/NATALIE VELEZ
BY NATALIE VELEZ Many agree art changes the way they perceive their space and environment. People love decorating their homes with things they enjoy. As Rupert Dixon states in The Role of Art in Interior Design, “Art informs the mood. You can tell a lot about someone by the books he or she reads and the paintings on the walls.” But what about our workplace? What stories do our office walls tell our clients and partners about our business and those who work there? The impact of having art in the workspace is often underestimated. This is why I’m happy to share a story of an IT company whose offices break all the stereotypes of those in the tech industry being nerds, wasting away in front of a computer day after day. When Dee Perconti of Perconti Data Systems was shopping for office space in downtown St. Petersburg, she strategically chose

an office on the first floor with big windows and high ceilings. This office is the first one seen when you enter the building – and it had to make a statement. Then she surprised the building manager when she requested new flooring and a change to the layout. Being an artist, she didn’t stop there. Her intention was to decorate the office with original art and sculptures. The building owner agreed, but with one stipulation - the blinds must be closed at all times. He stated, “It’s a business environment and we want our first floor to look presentable and professional for visitors.” She agreed and began her magic. Now eight years later, the blinds are never closed, and she has been asked on numerous occasions by the building owner if he could show her office to prospective tenants as an example of a successful office arrangement.

Dee Perconti, right, filled her families’ office space with colorful art to create an uplifting atmosphere. It all started with an idea of creating a surrounding that is uplifting. “I set out to create a ‘happy place’ for us at the office,” says Perconti. “We became known as an art gallery at City Center, even though we have a software design company. As you walk through you will see major works by many local and international artists - Rose Marie Prins, Helmut Preiss, and Mirella Cimato. Also, there are many pieces of street art that we brought back from Africa.” “Since our company is a family business, my husband and son unleashed their creativity in setting up their offices. My husband, Sal Perconti, has underwater photos he took while scuba diving and my son, Brian, has his photography work in his office. We also have a collection of Cuca Romely, and sculptures and vases that appeal to me. “I have only one of my pieces hanging here. The pride and joy of this space is a 7-foot expressive painting of an African woman named Bona, created by Lawrence, an extraordinary Creative Clay artist with a disability.” Studies indicate that art in the workplace can result in these advantages: • Productivity and personal growth: Research by Exeter University’s
School of Psychology found that people working in a space decorated with art or plants were 17% more productive than those in a lean space. • It saves time. The research found that people who worked in an enriched office worked about 15% quicker than those in a lean office. • It affects health. People working in a creative space have fewer health complaints. • It creates stronger relationships and easier communication with office visitors. • In the St. Petersburg office, it made an impact on the owner of the building’s reputation and how clients look at the entire building. • It can support the local art community, particularly through hightraffic offices and spaces with broad windows and lobbies. And there’s a double bonus. When individual offices are decorated by each member of the team, it allows them to show their personalities and inspirations. And you know what research tells us? Productivity doubles when people are involved in creating their own space.

Scott Smith
President, St. Anthony’s Hospital PHOTOS/BAYCARE
When Scott Smith became president of St. Anthony’s Hospital in 2016, there was one thing that he knew he really wanted to do – participate in the St. Anthony’s Triathlon. “I knew I would have to make the time to train for the race even as I began working at our busy hospital,” Smith, 54, said. “But I wanted to do it because it meant a lot to me.” Smith has been a part of BayCare Health System since 2013 when he became the first president of St. Joseph’s Hospital-South in southern Hillsborough County. He held administrative leadership positions at several hospitals in the South before joining BayCare. Smith now oversees the 393-bed St. Anthony’s Hospital which was founded in 1931 as a ministry of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany (N.Y.) As a child and teenager, Smith said he was fairly athletic. “But as an adult, I began my career as a pharmacist and sports and exercise took a back seat,” he said. “When I was named president of St. Anthony’s, the Triathlon gave me a good reason to get back into athlete mode.”

We took a few moments to chat with Smith about the St. Anthony’s Triathlon, how he finds time to train for the race and his advice for anyone who wants to participate. Why are you doing the St. Anthony’s Triathlon? I’m doing it primarily for health and fitness reasons. I fell in love with the event three years ago with my first exposure. I’ve wanted to do it ever since. How many times have you done the Triathlon? Have you done other triathlons? The first year I participated, I did it in a relay. The last two years, I have done the full Olympic distance. I’ll be doing that again this year. Tell us about your training regimen. I try to find the opportunities when they are available. I don’t have a specific regimen but I just make the time to do it. I mostly train on the weekends but try for one or two evenings a week depending on my schedule. I do mostly train alone but even if I train with a buddy,
CONVERSATIONS I tend to fall into my own pace and rhythm, which is SLOW! What is your favorite part of the race – the swim, the bike or the run? Actually, it is in that order. I like the swim the best, then the bike and then the run. I used to hate the run but now it is occasionally fun. What have been some of the biggest hurdles you’ve faced in training for the race? I would say that just getting into good enough condition to complete all three disciplines has been the biggest hurdle. As I’ve said finding the time to train is sometimes difficult but I make myself find the time. Do you have family/friends who encourage you?
The 36th annual St. Anthony’s Triathlon weekend will be April 26-28 at Vinoy Park in downtown St. Petersburg. Some 4,000 athletes from across the country are expected to compete in the Olympic- and Sprint-distance races
My family, friends and co-workers are all very supportive. Many of our team members and physicians from throughout St. Anthony’s and BayCare participate in the race. It’s great to see some friendly faces on the course, cheering you on. Have you set a goal for when you would like to cross the finish line? My goal is always just to finish and, hopefully, beat prior times. What is your best advice for anyone who wants to try the St. Anthony’s Triathlon? Just do it! Sign up for a relay, try the Sprint distance or go for the Olympic distance. But put in the time to train so that you will have a good day on the course.
throughout the downtown area on Sunday, April 28. The Meek & Mighty Triathlon, a race for children and novice adults, will be Saturday, April 27. A three-day Sports & Fitness Expo will be held throughout the weekend at Vinoy Park.

SPL HEALTH
A Healthy Approach to Plastic Surgery BY MICHELLE BOUDREAU It was very refreshing to meet Dr. Christian Drehsen, founder and director at Clinique of Plastic Surgery & Laser Institute, I found his candor delightful. During our conversation we talked openly about celebrity facelifts and what most people do and do not want from plastic surgery. We all do it, it is our point of reference for referring to a facelift gone right or oh so wrong with celebrities. After all, they are in the spotlight, and we watch them age before our eyes either gracefully with a little help from a doctor with expansive skills such as Dr. Drehsen’s, or not so gracefully with the help of the wrong doctor. In Dr. Drehsen’s vast experience for over 25 years he has received many accolades for his renowned expertise in the art of plastic surgery. The reason for his success is because he cares first and foremost about your health and takes a holistic approach. His first priority is your health, and second is for you to look natural only better. He believes “less is more” and it shows. I asked him about his inspiration and philosophy for creating the Refresher LiftSM. He is very passionate about patients looking refreshed and with turning back the hands of time in regards to aging. He referred to “things heading south as we age,” and how our facial expressions change. We do not look as appealing, perhaps angry or
tired, when it does not match how we feel. The Refresher LiftSM is a vertical lift, lifting up rather than pulling back. The standard facelift is front to back, which is where his technique differs. When you vertically lift, it brings your face back to where it was in your youth to give you a more natural look, rather than pulling your face back which in his words, “leaves you looking like you came out of a wind tunnel.” And no one wants that look. Dr. Drehsen is also very well known for his “brow” technique. He lifts the brow rather than changing or cutting the skin around the eye. He feels strongly about keeping the good expressions in your face naturally. I could hear his enthusiasm when sharing the results of his patients after having the Refresher LiftSM. “It is really astonishing how self-assured they become, they change their entire look, from hair to clothing, regaining the confidence they once had”. If you are like most of us, instant gratification is wonderful, and as they say, “seeing is believing”. Make an appointment for a consultation with Dr. Drehsen and you will see the proposed results with computer imaging during your visit. For more information visit cliniqueps.com

Best Burgers Dripping, drool-worthy goodness between two buns PHOTOS/KEVIN GODBEE
Everyone loves hamburgers! They almost always have cheese on them, so it’s safe to say that a hamburger/cheeseburger is the epitome of almost everyone’s favorite American food. I wanted to provide 10 burgers that are made of meat, but couldn’t leave out a quite worthy vegan burger.
Mushroom Swiss Burger - Ford’s Garage BY KEVIN GODBEE The Avenue Eat + Drink 330 1st Ave S (727) 851-9531 Firecracker Burger - Spicy house-made habanero sauce, peppered bacon, housemade jalapeño poppers, pepper jack cheese.
Locale at Sundial 179 2nd Ave N (727) 523-6297 St. Petersburger - Dry-aged beef, American cheese sauce, smoked gouda, applewood smoked bacon, caramelized onion, sautéed mushrooms, secret sauce.
I love this burger. It’s super spicy, so be careful. They make the habanero sauce fresh every day.
Get ready to get messy with this one. Get a lot of extra napkins. The secret sauce seems to be Thousand Island, and it goes great with the shredded lettuce.
Brick & Mortar 539 Central Ave (727) 822-6540 Brick & Mortar Burger – House-ground tenderloin filet and short rib, bacon onion jam, aged white cheddar, arugula, roasted garlic aioli. There is nothing like this burger anywhere. They grind their meat fresh in house every day. Everyone raves about this one.

Ford’s Garage 200 1st Ave S. (727) 295-3675 Mushroom Swiss Burger - Black Angus with baby Swiss cheese, sautéed mushrooms, lettuce, tomato, and red onion on a European pretzel bun. It’s juicy, full of flavor and lots of umami.
The Library 600 5th Street South (727) 369-9969 Library Burger - Double patty, white American cheese, lettuce, tomato, Library sauce. It’s not the style that most places are putting out these days, but it is just good, old-school comfort food. It actually reminded me of a Burger King Double Cheeseburger—in a very good way. The Mill 200 Central Ave. (727) 317-3930 Mill Burger – 8 oz prime beef, pimento cheese, bacon, bibb lettuce, tomato, smoked caramelized onion aioli. It’s just magical how it tastes so good— and it has pimento cheese!

The Burg Bar & Grill 1752 Central Ave. (727) 894-2874 Double Grilled Cheese Bacon Burger - Award winning monster 8-oz cheeseburger in between two grilled cheese bacon sandwiches.
My original “Best Burger in St. Pete.” The chorizo gives it a wonderful richness.
I recommend sharing this one with a friend.. It’s a fun over-thetop option when that’s what you need.
Stillwaters Tavern 224 Beach Dr. NE (727) 350-1019 Tavern Burger - Short rib, chuck, and brisket with sharp cheddar, Thousand Island, lettuce, caramelized onions, tomato, brioche bun.
Cider Press Café 601 Central Ave. (727) 914-7222 Classic Burger - Burger (beyond meat), lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mayo, ketchup and mustard on a Kaiser bun. It really tastes and feels like a meat burger! You almost can’t tell the difference, and some people can’t!

PHOTOS/LEFT BANK BISTRO
A restored 1922 bungalow exudes Parisienne charm thanks to owner/ designer Susanne Byram. BY MARCIA BIGGS
When Left Bank Bistro opened last fall, word spread like wildfire of a new French restaurant in the ‘Burg. But it was not along trendy Beach Drive or Central Avenue. Owner Susanne Byram, a relative newcomer, had purchased and transformed a 1922 bungalow on bustling Dr. MLK Jr. Street in the Crescent Lake neighborhood, into a charming French bistro. Byram’s bright, airy design reflects the joie de vivre of Parisian café culture, from cheeky cheetah print chairs to the photos on the wall of early 20th century Left Bank artists and writers , such as Picasso and Hemingway. She took a chance (her neighbors are a Dairy Inn and CDB shop), but her gamble paid off as the place is filled most nights.

Several visits and we have been seduced by its charm. With a lunch menu of salads and light dishes and a seductive wine list, the “women who do lunch” are, of course, here en force. But on a recent Friday afternoon, we noticed that men took up a fair number of seats, as well. Obviously, that says something about the fare and the ambiance. The wait staff is also top notch – educated on the cuisine and wine, quick and congenial, but not overbearing. Diners may choose from outdoor seating (we loved the shaded back porch) or indoors in the main dining room or more intimate “monkey room” (check out the wallpaper to understand the name). A small bar up front beckons with an excellent menu of craft cocktails and wine by the glass. For a light repast, sit at the bar and

Menu items include such traditional French dishes as Salade Nicoise, left, and Coq au Vin. share a Butcher’s and Fromage Plate, with its pleasing selection of cheeses, meats, berries, olives and such, with a few glasses of wine. Chef Thomas Mussara has succeeded in creating a menu of French classics, from starters such as a rich chicken liver pate and escargots, to entrees like traditional Coq au Vin, Bouillabaisse, Snapper, Roasted Salmon, and Grilled Beef Tenderloin. Our steaming bowl of Moules and Frites (mussels) was sweet and succulent, sautéed in bacon lard and finished with a light white wine and cream sauce. The Salade Niçoise comes with perfectly seared rare Ahi tuna, atop crisp lettuce (locally sourced, like much of the
greens, herbs, and eggs) with perfectly steamed green beans. The Bistro Burger is a lunch favorite, topped with melted Brie and wild mushrooms. For a treat, invite your bestie to brunch served both Sunday and Monday from 11 am to 3 pm. It features a selection of starters and lunch items, along with a dreamy Herb and Mushroom Omelette, French favorite Croque Madame, or Duck Confit with Pecan Waffles, mais oui! For a morning quickie, the Bistro opens at 7:30 am with fresh baked pastries and craft coffees. A few new menu items are being introduced in March, including veal on the dinner menu.

What’s In A Name?
Hi, I am Will Howard, Sommelier and Wine Director at Rococo Steak. As a sommelier, I’ve always felt that my goal is to match people with the perfect wine for their experience. That can be a challenging task considering the wide scope of wine today. I make it my goal to stay on the cutting edge of the wine industry in order to know what I’m talking about when selecting that perfect wine. Let’s raise a glass, discover some amazing wines and learn about what is in our glass and what to look for when we’re in our local wine shops. In this issue, I want to talk about an exciting trend in wine - natural, organic, and biodynamic wines. Let me explain what I’m talking about. These three styles of wine are all conscious of the environmental impact that wine production can have on the planet. They are all produced from vineyards using minimal or no pesticides, fertilizers, or fungicides, nor additives during winemaking and bottling (i.e. yeast, sulfites and artificial coloring). Although these styles are similar, there are also some important distinctions. Let’s start with organic wine. Organic wine in the United States is regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture. In order to be deemed “organic” by the USDA there are a lot of requirements, most of which surround the cultivation process. This requires anything used in the process or added to the wine to also be organic (i.e. organic vines and root stock when possible, cover crops and crop rotation). USDA Certified Organic wines are only wines from the United States, although similar practices are used for organic wines around the world. One of my favorite organic wineries is King Estate in Oregon. Next is natural wine. Natural wine generally means that the grapes used to make the wine are grown using standards for organic or biodynamic wine, but with the additional requirement of allowing the winemaking process to minimally affect the natural expression of the grape. This means that there is typically no fining, no filtration, only indigenous yeast, typically minimal impact from oak and carbonic maceration (think metal crown
cap or slightly fizzy wine). With natural wine, I typically think France. Several outstanding natural wines from Beaujolais, Loire and Rhone are simply labelled “vin de France” rather than with a more specific appellation. Brendan Tracey produces some of the most interesting natural wines in France. Finally, what are biodynamic wines? Biodynamic wines use a strict set of farming and business practices that focus on sustainability. Some pillars of biodynamic wineries are their sustainability in the land and ecosystem, economic sustainability and social responsibility. With biodynamic wines we will often see organic farming in conjunction with harvesting at the optimal moon phase and planet position. This is definitely the most “connected to the earth” and “holistic” style of winemaking. From the Wine Cellar Brendan Tracey Wah-Wah 2016 Varietal: Grolleau/Cot; Appellation: Vin de France. Funky at first with notes of leather and forest floor but is quickly transcended by strawberry and ripe red fruits. The wine shows some bubbles, not enough to call this sparkling, but just enough to let you know you’re venturing into natural wine territory. Light body with lingering tannin and outrageous pinkish red color. Presqu’ile 2017 Varietal: Pinot Noir; Appellation: Santa Barbara County, CA. Subtle plum and quince with a twist of citrus and an herbaceous finish. There is a chalky texture, hint of salinity and juicy berries that reflect the cool climate, terroir and dedication of this winemaking team. Tikal Natural 2015 Varietal: Malbec/Syrah; Appellation: Vista Flores, Mendoza. Intense aromas of cherry and raspberry with acidity showing the cooler vintage and high elevation. Baking spice and mocha finish off the palate on the wine. This should be a serious contender for your backyard barbecue wine pairing. Will Howard is Sommelier at Rococo Steak in St. Petersburg. His Wine Cellar recommendations are available at the restaurant.

Opening Soon Expected to open in early April, Kelly and Alex Rodriguez, owners of the popular Lolita’s Wine Market, are dipping their talents into a new Italian concept in the Grand Central District. Their new restaurant, Sophia’s Cucina & Enoteca, is located in the space formerly occupied by The Hive at 2349 Central Ave. Following in the footsteps of Lolita’s (named after their dog, Lola), Sophia’s is named after their dog Sophie. Using the
philosophy that has been so successful at Lolita’s, they have included a 16-foot communal table that will seat 18 in the main dining area to encourage diners to put their phones down and socialize with each other. They have also created intimate spaces in the main dining room and the main bar itself will seat 20. An indoor/outdoor bar area is also in the works along with outdoor patio seating. ARTS & CULTURE Spring is in the air. Though I admit, as a transplanted New Yorker, I still find it difficult to tell the difference between Spring and other seasons in Florida. That probably wouldn’t be considered unusual, except for the fact that I’ve lived here for almost 35 years! So, what’s the best distraction against the impending summer sauna? My answer (always) is by visiting one of the many spring arts events and venues right here in our beautiful ‘Burg. Below is just a smattering for your consideration. And please don’t forget to catch my arts and culture podcast, Beauty & The ‘Burg on the Helium Radio Network at www.heliumradio.com BY CINDY STOVALL
On Stage The Palladium has a reputation as being one of the most accessible venues for independent local artists to produce and stage their work. There is no better example of that than Beacon ’19, a compilation of staged pieces devoted to contemporary dance with multi genre collaborations across the arts. Now in its 4th year, Beacon has become one of the most anticipated dance/artistic events in St. Pete, and beyond. Co-founders Helen Hansen French and Lauren Sloan have overseen and curated the growth of this event with precision and great heart. It’s simply a breathtakingly beautiful and moving night of theater. One night only on April 5 at 8 pm. www.mypalladium.org It’s almost time for American Stage in the Park! Get your blankets, picnic baskets, and brie, and make plans to meet all your friends under the stars at Demen’s Landing from April 1- May 12. (Previews on April 10-11 are pay what you can.) Executive artistic director Stephanie Gularte is at the helm of this year’s production of “Mamma Mia” - the lighthearted musical and paternity mystery featuring the songs of ABBA. So, right off the bat, you can be sure you’ll know all the words. See you there, Super Troupers. www.americanstage.org St. Pete boasts some of the best professional theater around, but community theater is also alive and well here in the Sunshine City. With that in mind, may I say that I adore St. Petersburg City Theatre. It has been entertaining us since 1925 – almost a century. This theater used to be called “Little,” but if you’re measuring heart, there’s nothing little about it. This spring, SPCT brings us a timeless and much-loved tale of friendship and America’s racial history set in the Deep South. “Driving Miss Daisy” continues April 5-14. Museum Happenings The Museum of Fine Arts hosts one of my very favorite rites of spring – Art in Bloom. For four days each March, the galleries fill with colorfully fresh and fragrant floral interpretations of the museum’s collection and exhibits by invited local designers, florists, and garden club members. The accompanying events during these days are some of the most well attended of the year – an opulent opening night gala, a lovely and informative luncheon, and my favorite, “Conversations with the Designers,” where you get to ask anything you like about the creation and inspiration behind each masterpiece of flora and fauna. Happily, I have been a designer for this event for 17 years and I am especially thrilled to be creating a piece for the stunning Schlumberger jewelry exhibits. Trust me, you really don’t want to miss it April 28-May 1. www.mfastpete.org The Magritte & Dali exhibit continues at the Dali Museum through May 19 and there’s so much buzz about the interactive elements and spectacular cloud room, you really don’t want

Florida’s Glass Coast
ST. PETE
St. Pete shines as host of an international glass conference
The 10-foot-long piece North Star by glass artist Stephen Pon will be on view at Florida CraftArt through April 20. BY BILL DEYOUNG Imagine a future in which the art world refers to our slice of Florida as the Glass Coast, because it’s frontloaded with artists, galleries and museums dedicated to the American studio glass movement. The future, according to Imagine Museum executive director Jane Buckman, is now. Open for just a year, the 48,000 square foot facility is the latest – and the most visible – example of St. Petersburg’s expanding embrace of this relatively new form of delicate, three-dimensional, light-infused sculpture. “There are many collectors that are on this coast – major, major collectors from Naples up through Clearwater,” Buckman says. “Many of the glass collectors around the country are finding Florida the place to retire. What brought glass to this area are the collectors. They brought their collections down. And if they’re still acquiring in their collections, that’s creating a market for people to sell.”

Between the Morean Art Center’s extensive collection of pieces by Dale Chihuly, the working studios and galleries of Duncan McClellan, Zen Glass Studio and others, the whole Glass Coast designation was already being bandied about when Imagine’s (glass) doors first opened on Jan. 27, 2018. The international Glass Art Society (GAS) conference comes to St. Pete March 28-30, giving the area even more validation. Approximately 1,000 glass artists, educators and students will descend on St. Pete, and their itinerary includes visits to all the “glass houses” in town for demonstrations, discussions and more. Buckman, who says she pitched the idea to GAS two years ago, says the conference is a major coup for the city (the last one was held in Italy). “They go to major cities with glass hubs,” she explains. “And I think the artists, wherever they’re from, will be looking at St. Pete, looking at the art community here, and some will say ‘You know
ARTS & CULTURE what? Seattle or wherever is too expensive; I could be here and be in this growing scene.’ I mean, in order to make this cultural arena work, you have to have artists that are also working here. And have something being made here that’s being recognized.”
become self-sufficient. And I do believe we’ll make that happen – we’ll get the numbers to sustain it. And I think we’ll be able to get the investments, and the legacy kind of gifts, that will help sustain us through.”
The Imagine Museum was brainstormed, bought and built by billionaire businesswoman and philanthropist Trish Duggan, a relatively new arrival to the Clearwater area. Among her many artistic passions, Duggan is an aficionado of glass art – she is, in fact, a talented creator herself in the tricky and temperamental medium.
This story has been edited for space. To read the entire story go to Catalyst, St. Pete’s daily business platform, at StPeteCatalyst.com.
She bought the building at 1901 Central, the former home of the Imagine Charter School (Duggan liked the name, so it stayed) and formed a nonprofit. The collection, which numbers more than 500 pieces, was curated by Corey Hampson, of Michigan’s Habatat Galleries. Duggan tasked Hampson, a nationally-recognized scholar and expert on glass art, with creating a timeline – tracing the history of the American glass art movement, which began in the early 1960s – and to locate pieces that reflect the change and innovation in glass art over time. This he did. And Duggan bought every piece, and had it all shipped to Florida. Duggan, who is the chairman of the museum’s small board of directors, is paying for everything herself. That’s how strongly she believes in the art – and in the community. “Our goal,” says Buckman, “is for this gift to the City of St. Pete to

Bay Dermatology Spring into a New You with Peace of Mind BY MICHELLE BOUDREAU Now that flowers are in bloom and spring in the air, we often think of rejuvenating our look and health. Bay Dermatology offers a plethora of services to address your needs with peace of mind, as the doctors and staff are exceedingly experienced with aesthetics, and skin screening for abnormalities. In one office you can receive treatment and aesthetic repair as the team of medical professionals work together. As a bonus, Bay Dermatology accepts many major medical insurance plans in order to perform skin
cancer removal and reconstruction, as well as removal of benign growths. Also, when excess eyelid skin is affecting your vision, an upper eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) can possibly be covered by medical insurance as well. With a phone call the staff can address your insurance questions. In the comfort and colorful luxury of the St. Pete location, I had the opportunity to interview Dr. Jason Swerdloff, MD and Dr. Kristin Witfill, DO to share their individual expertise with you.

Dr. Jason Swerdloff, MD
Double Board Certified, Dr. Swerdloff is Board Certified by the American Board of Facial Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery What differentiates you from other facial plastic surgeons? I have extensive experience in performing all manner of facial plastic surgery procedures in the office using only local anesthesia or local anesthesia supplemented by oral relaxation medications. Patients are relaxed and comfortable, however do not need to be ‘put to sleep,’ or even have an IV placed. I do the majority of my aging facial

procedures this way, including the Natural Lift, which addresses aging changes in the lower face and neck. This can be combined with eyelid procedures, skin resurfacing, and brow lifting in as little as an hour. I have performed over 5,000 procedures, making me one of the most experienced facial surgeons in the Tampa Bay area. What is the typical process to undergo the Natural Lift, and how do you accomplish the final natural looking results? Patients who dislike the appearance of their neck, jowls, or jawline benefit from this procedure. The goal is to get the maximum result possible while still ensuring a natural, refreshed look that is
SPL HEALTH permanent, in that you will always look younger than whatever age you are. No sutures need to be removed, and there are no drains or staples. Patients can leave the office a short time after the procedure is finished, and can look great with makeup in as little as 5 days, with return to all physical activities in one week. Are there any new groundbreaking procedures that we can look forward to? Laser Skin Resurfacing is not really new, however newer generation lasers allow us to address lines, wrinkles, dull skin, and age spots with much less downtime and almost no discomfort. We can turn back the clock on sun damaged skin. The results can be quite dramatic.
Dr. Kristin Witfill, DO
Board Certified by the American Board of Dermatology Dr. Witfill is a Clinical Instructor for the Dermatology Residency Program at Largo Medical Center/ Nova Southeastern University, and she was inducted as a Fellow of the ASMS (American Society for Mohs Surgery) What is your philosophy on aesthetics? In my practice I believe in taking the time to consult my patients thoroughly to address their concerns and desired outcomes. I listen carefully. It is more than one size fits all with aesthetics, and you have to treat everyone as an individual to achieve the best results. I take the time with
photos and explanations for best comprehension. Too many times I am repairing another procedure performed elsewhere that could have possibly been avoided had they just listened to the patient’s request for desired outcome. The most common concern for most people is being over treated and looking unnatural. I take pride in giving my patients natural results. I know you train other medical professionals, what is your aesthetic specialty? One of the most popular is the Y LIFT®, I am a trained and certified Y LIFT professional, and have been performing Aesthetic procedures for over 10 years and the Y Lift® procedure for over 2 years now. I closely study the facial structure of each patient so that the customized process naturally accents specific features. I think it is so popular because the results are natural with no incisions, no anesthesia, and no downtime. They get instant results! Why is it called the Y Lift? Y LIFT® is based on the notion that youthful facial contours are shaped like the letter “Y.” The face appears wide at the top in the eye and cheekbone region then narrows to a point at the chin. As we age, the arms of the “Y” begin to widen downward and the face begins to lose volume. A cannula is inserted beneath the skin to lift muscles, fascia and fat just below the skin to provide the greatest lift in the face. Then FDA approved Allergan fillers (Juvéderm®,Voluma®, etc) are injected to hold everything in its newly elevated position — leaving the patient instantly restored and enhanced.

Small Luxuries Tiny homes can be as simple or luxurious as you like PHOTOS/ ESTER VENOUZIOU
John and Fin Kernohan’s tiny firehouse-theme home has a light, airy living space complete with firepole. BY KAYLA GLEASON Chandeliers, spiral staircases, clawfoot bathtubs - think I’m describing a million-dollar mansion? Think again. All of these features and so many more are available in tiny homes, a movement that’s been sweeping the nation over the last few years.
Even without permanent buildings on display, attendees will still have plenty of state-of-the-art living spaces to check out, as tiny homes can be anything from a homemade travel trailer to a completely remodeled school bus.
And to celebrate this increasingly popular lifestyle and create connections for those interested, LocalShops1 is hosting its second annual St. Pete Tiny Home Festival.
“Whatever style you like, you can really make it happen,” Venouziou said.
“We’re going to recreate a tiny home village with about 30 to 35 houses on display. Obviously, they’re all going to be mobile styles since we can’t construct permanent structures for the event but we will have guest speakers who live in foundation-style homes,” said Ester Venouziou, founder of LocalShops1. “But it’s not like a home show. We’re going to have food trucks, Q&A panels, entertainment – really something for people of any age and any level of interest.”

March/April 2019
Pat Dunham, a tiny homes advisor and guest speaker, added: “It runs the gamut from very elaborate, big tiny houses to self-builds.” So, with all this variety, what really is a tiny home? Tiny homes are technically structures under 400 square feet, according to John Kernohan who, along with wife Fin, live in their own tiny home and often travel to speak on the topic. However, he says the rules can be bent a little.
SPL EVENTS “The reality is, for us, you can’t really say someone living in a 600 square foot space isn’t living tiny. It just depends on your specific needs and the requirements in your area,” Kernohan said. Zoning is the biggest thing to look out for, especially in older cities like St. Pete, says JoAnne Peck, owner of tiny home building company Historic Shed. “Sometimes the city will tell you that you need a certain number of windows on a wall to maintain the neighborhood’s look,” she said. “And while St. Pete is very open to accessory dwellings, like carriage houses and guest houses, if you’re in a designated historic district, you have to go to a design review.” Tiny homes on wheels, however, don’t typically face issues like this, giving owners even more style freedom. For a mobile structure, the biggest thing is they be road-safe – meaning they are not only capable of traveling at highway speeds but also fit within the average road requirements. According to Pat Dunham, a tiny homes advisor, this means 8.5 feet wide and 13.5 feet tall. “You can really do a lot more with this space than you think. It’s incredible some of the homes I’ve seen,” Venouziou said.
a full-size refrigerator and stove. If fashion is your thing, you can design around that and give yourself a larger closet. A lot of people think they need big but if they pay attention to the space they’re actually using, they’re only using this tiny bit of space and the rest goes to waste.” But for those looking for a bit more luxury, tiny homes don’t have to stop with these simple amenities. “One of our most popular houses from last year, The Hummingbird, will be coming back. It had a clawfoot tub, chandeliers – I was ready to live there,” said Venouziou. Others, she recounts, have had lofted bedrooms, working fireplaces, elaborate stained glass windows and pet-friendly additions. Many homes can also be designed with green living in mind, as well. Kernohan’s home, for instance, is equipped with solar panels, composting toilets and ecofriendly building materials.
And these aren’t your average mobile homes or run-of-the-mill recreational vehicles.
“Seeing all the homes and meeting everyone living in them, it’s not just one type of person. More and more people of all ages are adjusting to living tiny, whether it’s due to costs, because the want to travel or because they want to be closer to family,” Venouziou said.
“Most builders now do custom builds. They have their models, but they’ll work with the homeowner to recognize their needs and incorporate them into the build,” said Dunham.
The St. Pete Tiny Home Festival runs March 23-24 at the SPC Allstate Center. Venouziou suggests buying tickets early as space is limited and the event sold out last year.
“For people who like to cook, they can have a larger kitchen with

Margaritaville Comes To Town BY MICHELLE BOUDREAU

Business acumen is no stranger to local resident and serial entrepreneur Ken Atchison, as he is set to open his eleventh store in the state of Florida with the upcoming Margaritaville store at 6390 Gulf Blvd, St Pete Beach near the “Postcard Inn On The Beach” due to open in early April. He holds the license for the Jimmy Buffet branded store in St. Petersburg. Having a great affinity for the brand and the tropical lifestyle makes it the perfect fit for his fourth store in St. Pete. He also has four stores in the Naples area, and three stores in the Sarasota area. He chooses his locations by places he would like to live and he has chosen to make St. Pete his residence.
When asked to share advice on successfully opening a store he replied, “You have to be prepared to put some money into it. You have to be in the store, and I have always worked in my stores.” He believes in being very hands-on when it comes to opening stores and prides himself on hiring great professionals to work alongside him. In his words, “The hardest part of the business is finding good management and sales staff.”
While frequenting his Milano Bags & Shoes store on Beach Drive, which quickly became one of my favorites, I got to know more about Ken Atchison. As he typically launches stores in two weeks, I was interested in his secret to success. Ken started out in college headed for a law degree, and life took a different direction when he started working at a shoe store to create income while in school. He was hard working, driven, and it paid off as he was recruited by a department store in a nearby shopping mall. He was offered a buying job with that department store, and during his employment it was his dream to open his own shoe store. He saved enough money to do so and in ten years he had opened his fourth store while keeping his full-time buying position.

The James Museum
Where East meets West
The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art 150 Central Ave, St Pete 727-892-4200 thejamesmuseum.org
BY MICHELLE BOUDREAU To say Tom James is an “Art Connoisseur” is an understatement. In my meeting with the successful businessman of Raymond James Financial fame I found a passion for art that far transcends a collector with expertise. The meeting itself was an artistic experience, from the approach to his office buildings at Raymond James I was in admiration of the bronze art surrounding the grounds. Even at the front desk, art is on display on every wall. From the start of our meeting, I found Tom James unpretentious and congenial. As a philanthropist, one of his legacies is The James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art, a gift to the St. Petersburg community and visitors. When asked what he enjoys most about collecting art, he answered, “I enjoy finding

talented artists who are local without fame. I take pleasure in contributing to their fame and business. I also appreciate the negotiations with more seasoned artists and their business teams.” Behind Tom hangs a Native American art piece, appropriately named “The Negotiators, 2014”, an oil on canvas by Robert Griffing. I could see how this piece spoke to him as he shared details of the savoy Native American businessmen and the traditions of their meetings. The love for Western culture started at a very young age for Tom James, when Western movies with family were commonplace. He recalled a nostalgic memory of his first date at age twelve, as he took his young admiration to a Western movie. He feels it’s a lost art,
ARTS & CULTURE and today’s culture is missing the knowledge regarding the Native American heritage and Western culture. He is passionate about keeping this rich part of American history alive and thriving. His desire for art collecting grew over the years with his wife and co-founder of The James Museum, Mary. As they would travel they began collecting art from their trips. In the beginning, they gravitated mostly to local artists with scenery reminding them of their travels. As they traveled often, their collection grew rapidly, and to date it includes works in oil, ink, stone, and bronze. As their affinity for the West grew, so did their personal Western art collection that now is on display shared with The James Museum. As a Dali Museum board member, Tom James was instrumental in the arrival of the new Dali Museum. In the inception of the James
Museum, he interviewed several teams to build the museum and after due diligence he found himself circling back to hiring the same team that built the Dali for his James Museum. The architecture of the building itself is stunning, and offerings now include classes, artist presentations, and special events. In addition to the vast personal collection of Western art, you will also find varied artists and collections on display with special exhibitions. During my visit I enjoyed the whimsical display of Pop Art by a favored local artist: James Michaels’ “An American Pop Life,” a 40-year career with early works from the pop ‘70’s, to current contemporary realism. Treat yourself to a day at The James Museum to learn and explore the expansive art collection appealing to all ages. You will find yourself wanting more and returning often.
