WELCOME TO SPL ABOUT US

Happy Holidays This is the time of year when our friends and relatives living in far-flung Northern places hate us. Well, you know what we mean. Maybe they are a wee bit jealous of our fabulous winter weather, with sun shining most days, moderate temps, palm trees blowing in the soft ocean breeze and blooming tropical landscapes. The holidays bring a special energy and sparkle to our Sunshine City. Our cover reflects this in the fantasy of fashion that is a part of the season. Ah, life in the ‘Burg is beautiful! Thanks to the outstanding effort of our City as they decorate our waterfront parks, filling the downtown with such colorful cheer and festivities. We have offered a round-up in this issue of many holiday happenings from family-friendly Santa Fest to grown-up parties for New Year’s Eve. Be sure to take a look and make plans early. We would be remiss not to do a special shout-out for the annual First Night taking place all around town on December 31. This massive event spread out over nearly a dozen locations, is a celebration of the best things about St. Petersburg with non-stop live music, interactive artists, dance and theater and street buskers, children’s activities and all capped off with two rounds of fireworks! This alcohol-free event is perfect for the family. See more about First Night inside this issue. We hope you enjoy our other features, including Cindy Stovall’s inside look at the Dr. Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum. This gem located in the Deuces has a rich history and has become a respected center of more than just arts in the St. Pete community due in large part to museum director Terri Lipsey Scott. As the year draws to a close, we at St. Pete Life wish to express our gratitude to all those we have come to know this year. We have made many new friends and your support and praise mean so much. We feel that St. Petersburg’s day has come, and it is our pleasure to keep you informed on everything good that’s happening. Here’s to a happy, healthy and successful New Year to all!

Puppy Love New tour offers a sneak peek into Southeastern Guide Dogs’ facility

BY KAYLA GLEASON What began in 1984 as a small ranch house nestled amidst the trees and farmland of Palmetto grew into a sprawling 33-acre campus that houses and trains future guide dogs. Under the care of countless volunteers, veterinarians and instructors, Southeastern Guide Dogs (SGD) welcomes approximately 250 new puppies into the world every single year who, ultimately, get to choose their own life paths. “Every dog has a purpose, but only the crème de la crème become guide dogs,” says Ruth Lando, media relations manager for SGD. “We examine them to see what their aptitudes are, their strengths. Some might be more well-suited for police work or emotional support.”

Southeastern Guide Dogs’ Behind Closed Doors tour. “So many people were interested in the magic behind the scenes here that we designed this tour to show them,” Lando said. “It’s a great way to educate the public and get word out about what we do.” Starting at the Puppy Academy, experienced tour guides lead intimate groups through all the stages of a dog’s life on campus from newborn pups to running training exercises. After a litter is born, the puppies attend Puppy Preschool for “playing with a purpose” where they are introduced to new sights and sounds. Then, at six weeks, they move up to Kindergarten where their personality and field assessments continue at a more in-depth level. “Our goal is to create the best service dogs in the world,” said CEO Titus Herman in a video pre-recorded specifically for the tour.

DeeDee Haddad, left, is sight-impaired and found her perfect match, Wrigley, at Southeastern Guide Dogs. From the Puppy Academy, dogs will spend the first few years of their lives with puppy raisers off-campus, acclimatizing to the world around them. This can mean trips to stores and restaurants, interaction with small children, or becoming acquainted with the family cat – the familiarization will ultimately keep them less distracted on the job.

applicants. “Dogs can be expensive but we want to make them more accessible to those in need,” Young added.

“We couldn’t do what we do without our puppy raisers. It really does take a village,” Lando said.

“In the beginning, it was really intimidating, it took baby steps but I was in awe at every facet. Everything I expected has exceeded that,” said DeeDee Haddad, a St. Pete resident and mother of three who first began losing her sight at 16 due to Stargardt Disease. “To get us the perfect dog, they take into account our walking rate, our size – it’s like match.com but for dogs.”

“The raisers have them for about two years and then bring them back for Canine University. It really is like dropping your child off at college for the first time,” Lando said. At Canine University, dogs live on-campus and begin the final rounds of training. “[We visit] places like University Town Center and downtown Tampa and St. Petersburg. This way, they learn commands and safety in real-life situations involving traffic, escalators and loud noise,” said Alexandria Young, manager of guest experiences. After university, dogs are paired up with their perfect human matches to take one final course together, allowing both to get comfortable. “We teach eight guide dog classes and four service dog classes a year where the pairs will actually live on-campus together for weeks,” Young said. Everything, including the guide dog, is offered at no cost to qualified

A commencement ceremony is then held for each class, giving the new owners the opportunity to share their stories and meet the people who made their new partnerships possible.

Commencement is often emotional as owners recount how greatly their lives have improved in such a short time. Veteran Vernon Richmond stated: “I didn’t realize I would run into an animal more intelligent than I am but, with Rubicon by my side, I think my life will be so much easier.” Spanning three decades, Southeastern Guide Dogs has successfully paired over 3,000 humans and guide dogs across the 48 contiguous states and the nine graduates from October’s commencement will join the continuously growing ranks of alumni. “Our goal is to create and nurture extraordinary partnerships between people and guide dogs,” Herman said.

Scheer’s outdoor, nighttime concept is celebrating 10 years in 2018, and in keeping with his hard-earned reputation as the selfless host with the most, he’s not throwing himself a self-congratulatory bash. Instead, come November 17, he’ll transform St. Pete’s North Straub Park into the chilling-est, lounging-est after-dark party of the season. “Illumination” will be the 47th event in the history of Chillounge Night; Scheer estimates more than 120,000 people have attended his parties, all over Florida, and more than $125,000 has been raised for local charities. St. Pete’s Creative Clay is the beneficiary of this year’s event. “I love what I do – if not, I wouldn’t do this for 10 years,” the native of Wiesbaden, Germany explains. “I love when everything comes together in the evening and all these people come – nice people, they dress nice and they just want to have a nice evening.” Scheer, who’s based in Manatee County, says that Straub Park is his favorite location for staging a Chillounge Night (this will

22

StPeteLifeMag.com

be his 11th visit to the waterfront greenspace). “We come in the morning. It looks amazing at night, and the next morning at 4 o’clock, the park looks like it did before anything happened.” For seven years, he operated an art gallery, selling imported Italian frescos, in downtown Sarasota. “I wanted to come up with something special to bring people to the downtown area – a nice upscale event,” he says. “And the galleries and restaurants would be happy and proud.” There was another reason. “I wasn’t making money with the gallery. I told myself ‘Either you come up with something or you go back to Germany.’” Scheer says he brainstormed the Chillounge Night concept - “an outdoor event with food, music, all kind of upscale elements, different entertainment, maybe a fashion show” - over a single weekend. From Indonesia, he bought hundreds of pieces of hand-made wicker furniture; the inflatable, LED-illuminated furniture and cushions came later (and he’s still buying more). And that’s only a small percentage of his inventory. Everything, including his 826 pillows, is stored in a large Sarasota warehouse. “I could sit about 600 people at a time on all my lounge furniture,” Scheer says with a mischievous grin. “That’s a lot of furniture.”

SPL EVENTS Each six-hour event takes approximately four months of logistics and planning, including securing sponsorships, locating the charities, subcontracting the food and beverage and the entertainment. Scheer is constantly coming up with new ideas. He’s most proud of Cirque du Chill, which added circus acts, daredevils and assorted illuminated thrills to the concept. The big – and, not coincidentally, costly - event premiered in 2014. It was staged in St. Pete, Tampa and Sarasota. “I cry when I see the videos now – because I don’t know how I did it,” he explains, “but I know everybody loved it. Everybody always asks me ‘When will you bring back Cirque du Chill?’” Chillounge can be adapted for any location, any occasion. There’s the “Sunset Lounge” experience on St. Pete Beach; that’s happened twice so far. “Chillounge Night can also be part of an existing event, like a golf tournament,” Scheer offers. “For

example, this March, the 10th annual Sarasota Chillounge Night was the official closing night of the 20th annual Sarasota Film Festival, in front of the Opera House. It was pretty cool.” Because the profits are derived almost exclusively from ticket sales, Scheer is always looking for a new financial angle. He’s hoping that major corporations – say, Amazon, Microsoft or Raymond James – will come to him when they’re thinking about holiday or anniversary parties. He also rents the furniture, for those not looking to invest in the full Chillounge experience. “I’m very realistic – I’m not a dreamer,” Scheer explains. “I’m German, so I’m very detailed and organized.” Still, “The last 10 years were a journey. A wonderful journey.” Content provided by the Catalyst, St. Pete’s daily business platform. Subscribe for free at StPeteCatalyst.com. ST. PETE

LGBTQ Welcome Center Reopens When it opened in 2014, St. Petersburg’s LGBTQ Welcome Center, a project of Metro Wellness & Community Centers, was only the third of its kind in the nation. Since then, it’s become a well-known safe haven to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered members of our community in the heart of a city known for a vibrant gay community. A newly launched Welcome Center now serves as a resource for LGBTQ tourists interested in learning where to stay, what to see and where to eat. A new gift shop offers original St. Pete merchandise from local LGBTQ artists and guests can enjoy free wi-fi, an ice cream bar and locally roasted Kahwa coffee. The Welcome Center will offer programs for LGBTQ seniors and youth throughout the week. “It was our goal to create a safe place for those looking to build a network of friends or find access to LGBTQ-friendly resources,” said Lorraine Langlois,

CEO of METRO. “Whether someone is just coming out or in a new city looking to make friends, we want St. Petersburg to have a resource for all.” Collaborating with tourism agencies such as Visit St. Pete/ Clearwater, the Welcome Center will continue to bolster Tampa Bay’s reputation as a gay-friendly vacation destination. “The new LGBTQ Welcome Center reaffirms St. Pete/Clearwater’s reputation as both welcoming and inclusive,” said David Downing, President & CEO of Visit St. Pete/ Clearwater. “As the No. 1 destination on the Gulf of Mexico and home to Florida’s largest Pride, the center provides the perfect opportunity for travelers to connect with the community.” The LGBTQ Welcome Center is located in St. Petersburg’s Grand Central District at 2227 Central Avenue; find it online at LGBTQWelcomeCenter.org.

Cross-Bay Ferry Returns Skip traffic hassles and enjoy a beautiful ride across Tampa Bay aboard the Cross-Bay Ferry. We loved cruising aboard this 98-foot dualhull catamaran when it was here in 2016-2017. Seating is available inside and on deck, and the skyline views are spectacular. The smoothsailing 50-minute ride makes for an enjoyable excursion with family or friends, allowing passengers to disembark at either downtown terminal to spend a few hours at a restaurant or museum. Consider this transportation option when attending concerts or sporting events, too! Boarding takes place in St. Petersburg in the Vinoy Yacht Basin on Bayshore Drive NE ( just north of the Museum of Fine Arts and just south of the Vinoy Hotel) and behind the Florida Aquarium in Tampa’s Channelside District. (All guests must be ticketed and ready for loading 20 minutes prior to departure.) Ferry customers can make use of one of two nearby parking garages in St. Pete -- the Sundial Garage is three blocks away

and the South Core Garage is five blocks away from the Ferry Terminal. All customers who purchase a ticket for the CrossBay Ferry and who park in the Sundial Garage can request a parking pass which can be used for free parking. The Tampa terminal is located behind The Florida Aquarium, next to the Victory Ship. There are two surface lots, one public parking garage and a valet option within a five minute walk. The six-month ferry is an alternative transportation initiative that comes through a funding collaboration of Pinellas and Hillsborough counties, and the cities of St. Petersburg and Tampa. Not considered a commuter ferry, the Cross-Bay Ferry is meant to offer residents and visitors an option to driving across the Bay. Fares are $8 one way; $5 for seniors, military and college students; $3 for ages 5-18; children under 4 are free. Tickets, departure times and more information can be found at thecrossbayferry.com or by calling (727)273-5932. Walkups can purchase tickets on-site. The ferry will end service on April 30.

Follow Your Fantasy The holiday season offers the opportunity to express who you are – and maybe more BY MEGAN SIMONS When it comes to fashion, keep in mind the holidays are nearly here, so let’s make the season bright! The holiday season, full of festivities and celebrations of all magnitudes, offers the opportunity to express who you are. You are going to see and be seen, and like the saying goes – fine feathers make fine birds. This is the time of year to unleash your inner spirit, the fearless, imaginative woman that you want to be, but not always have the daring to show. Forget about the fashion rules, forget about what your friends will say – just be you, unapologetic, irrefutable and most importantly, irreplaceable you. Follow your passions and your fantasies, have a love affair with your clothes. Be the fire and the ice of any event or social occasion! This season is overflowing with color, shimmer and glitz. Take a fashion risk with an edgy evening dress that brightens up the darkest night. Put on a sparkly fire-red ball gown, or a formfitted, glittery, icy blue evening dress, that would freeze everybody in their spots, practice a few dance steps in a front of a mirror and keep your head high. That’s a good start. We are quite fortunate to live in such a mild climate, but even here the nights can be chilly so make sure you have something to wrap yourself in. Fur (not necessarily a real one) and feathers are a timeless symbol of life’s luxuries, and they add a touch of aristocracy and drama to any outfit, even jeans. Have you ever wondered about boots with cocktail dress? That’s one sizzling number that will stay in your company’s mind for a while. Over-the-knee boots

FASHION with a short dress may be easily replaced with over the knee socks and stilettos in the same color. But that’s not the only option, shimmery ankle booties are unexpected and a very stylish addition to your party dress. New Year’s Eve is the perfect excuse for a new dress. I strongly suggest something daring to catch the eye of everyone in the room. Show some skin, highlight that décolleté or shoulders with confidence and add plenty of sparkle to help ring in a New Year that beams. A mistake we should avoid this holiday season: Don’t be caught off guard with nothing but last year’s attire to wear. Get prepared ahead of time for the lastminute invitations with new, festive and dazzling accessories. A little black dress in tuxedo style or trendy red top with a pair of dressy black slacks are great options for the parties with unknown dress code that will prevent you from being over or under dressed. With the addition of creative accessories, you’ll be ready to go!

Dazzling Beauty BY RO MARTINEZ RIMES Creating a fantasy look can be easy with a little planning - after all, ‘tis the season for love and sparkle! I wish the tiny lights adorning trees around the holidays were up all year long. It’s the sparkle or glow they cast on everything that I find so appealing. That same feeling can be achieved with hair and makeup as you prepare for this festive season full of parties and gatherings with family and friends. A few suggestions: Who doesn’t want to outshine those Christmas lights? Makeup is key to expressing your creative self and show personality. Starting with a clean canvas is key. To achieve a flawless look cleanse and exfoliate to remove dead skin cells. Moisturize

and add primer to prepare skin prior to applying makeup. A highlighter will give you a lasting dewy fresh look. For eyes and lips, deep colors such as browns and plums, and the addition of false lashes and plenty of eyeliner add drama for a night out on the town or holiday party. Hair is your crowning glory, take care of it and it will reward you. Compliment your holiday wardrobe by letting your hair down or braiding it to create the sparkle that is reflective of this time of year. The right cut and styling tools can make a difference. Pamper your hair and it can shine like a diamond. To really sparkle, add bling with accessories such as a headband or rhinestone hairpins.

Miracle at Mezzo Santa might get a tad delayed if he makes a stop at Intermezzo, the EDGE District’s specialty coffee shop and craft cocktail bar. General manager Jarrett Sabatini is jumping on the pop-up trend as Tampa Bay’s only Miracle holiday pop-up bar. From November 23 to December 31, Miracle at Mezzo will transform the bar into a colorful, sparkling holiday wonderland, joining some 80 Miracle franchise locations around the globe. A special menu of 10 seasonallythemed cocktails will utilize traditional holiday flavors such as pumpkin, butterscotch and cranberry, and are served in kitschy Santa mugs and other fun glassware. A few of the delicious concoctions on the Miracle menu include a Snowball Old Fashioned (gingerbread bourbon, wormwood bitters, lemon zest) , Christmas Carol

Barrel (aged rum, aquavit, pumpkin pie, lime, vanilla, Angostura bitters) and A Partridge In A Pear Tree (Repos ado tequila, pear brandy, mescal, lime, Angostura bitters, cinnamon). Featured shots include the Nice Shot (rum, peppermint, chocolate) and the Naughty Shot (bourbon, cinnamon). All cocktails will be served in Cocktail Kingdom’s custom Miracle glassware, from mugs to coupes, highballs and rocks glasses, which are available for purchase. “We are really psyched to be part of the Miracle network,” says Sabatini, who is working with the headquarters in New York City. “This will be a great addition to the St. Pete bar scene during the holidays.” Intermezzo Coffee and Cocktails, 1111 Central Ave., St. Petersburg 727-342-0156

ARTS & CULTURE

Tombolo Books Pop-up bookstore is on the move around St. Pete

BY ALEXANDRIA JONES Alsace Walentine is turning the idea of a small, local bookstore around with her book pop-up shop Tombolo Books. Walentine has worked in the book-selling business for 20 years, starting in Asheville, North Carolina, so she knows a thing or two about what it takes to keep avid readers interested in new materials. When her wife Candice Anderson moved to St. Pete after a job offer in 2015, Walentine was a bit reluctant because it meant leaving her career in Asheville and starting over in a new city. Once she visited St. Pete a few times, she realized there wasn’t a bookstore anywhere in the area like the one she previously worked at in North Carolina. “I was an author events director, so I got to work with authors and match them

34

with groups of people. It really has a big impact on people’s lives when they meet these authors. I loved making that special thing happen all the time,” Walentine explains. The idea behind Tombolo Books is simple: give St. Pete readers the opportunity to find new and surprising literature. “In early 2017, we started a book club at a local yoga studio - Body Electric - so that was the initial step in our business,” said Walentine, who co-owns the business with Anderson. There isn’t a brick and mortar shop yet, but plans for a 2019 tentative opening are under way. “Tombolo” means “connecting readers to each other,” and that is what she plans to do by bringing in their favorite authors for events. “Author events, community

ARTS & CULTURE events, and book clubs are key to what we’re going to be doing with the new space. There are so many well-educated people here plus a strong shop local movement and art scene,” she says.

“We want to surprise customers with books they didn’t know about,” said Walentine. “We want to curate a selection of books that turn heads and have people go ‘oh my gosh, I didn’t know that existed’.” PHOTO /MARCIA BIGGS

Walentine wants books to be accessible and available to everyone. One way she does that is through her Downtown Delivery service. Readers can request books be hand-delivered to them at any location whether it’s a coffee shop, work office, or home. If the book

selection is out of stock, she will look for it and let you know when it’s ready.

Upcoming Tombolo pop-ups • Look for Tombolo Books at Tampa Bay Times Festival of Reading at USF St. Petersburg November 17 in the Book Market from 10 am-5 pm with a wide variety of books and book-related gifts. The event is free. • On November 18, Tombolo will co-present graphic artist/author Jason Lutes at the ArtsXchange, 515 22nd St. S. in the Warehouse Arts Districts, from 3 -5 pm for his masterwork titled BERLIN. • The book club continues to meet the second Wednesday of every month from 6 to 7 pm at Body Electric Yoga Company, 685 30th Ave. N in St. Petersburg. Readers can find Tombolo Books on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at @TomboloBooks and online at tombolobooks.com

At a documentary screening on the life of author Zora Neale Hurston at the Dr. Carter G. Woodson Museum, Alsace Walentine popped up with a wide variety of books by and about the noted writer.

Asian Fare With Flair

A boom in Asian restaurants brings new options to the ‘Burg PHOTOS FROM ST. PETERSBURG FOODIES

High Roller Back in April, 23 Restaurant Services, while in town for their buildout of Ford’s Garage and Yeoman’s Cask & Ale, stumbled upon Souzou Asian Kitchen and bought it. Now Saké 23, the restaurant continues to serve Pacific Rim inspired favorites with even greater attention to food quality and new emphasis on a variety of elevated dishes. Menu categories include: Sushi, Sashimi, Bento Boxes, Soups, Ramen, Major Rolls, Minor Rolls, Fried Rice (and cauliflower), and Dinner Plates. Some of the Souzou favorites, like the Category 5 (one of our favorites), and even the Souzou Roll were kept on the

menu. Past Souzou regulars will be happy about this. There are now six ramen options instead of just the one previously available. When Souzou was first bought, the former head chef left to open his own business, and the sous chef, “T” stepped up and was given the opportunity to take over and create two of his own rolls, The 23 Dragons and the High Roller. It’s nice to see that Jessi Rogers, who has been there since day one, is still there, and is now the general manager. The Edge District just keeps getting better and better, and one of the hippest and tastiest places to eat and hangout is Hawkers Asian Street Fare. Hawkers has delicious family recipes from several Asian locales including Japan, Korea, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. The name “Hawkers” refers back to Asian markets with food stalls where the vendors would “hawk” their goods.

Fans of Hawkers Asian Street Fare can find seven new menu items on the restaurant’s new fall/winter menu. “Our inspiration for the dishes comes from our desire to curate a menu that closely reflects what one might find on the streets of Asia,” said co-founder Kaleb Harrell. “Authenticity is what we’re focusing on.” One of the fun things you can do while making a night of it at Hawkers is to get a flight of Japanese whiskeys. “To my knowledge, no one else is doing flights of Japanese whiskeys. It’s kind of a new thing that’s been really well received,” says Harrell. FOOD BITES Smokin’ Hot Probably the biggest news on the Sunshine City Food Bites scene is the recent opening of the long-awaited Dr. BBQ in the getting-trendier-by-the-moment Edge District. The shouts of exultation are echoing across ‘Burgland, not only because the ‘cue is darn awesome, but also for the diverse menu and the cool digs. Dr. BBQ is overseen by world-famous ‘cue-master Ray Lampe, along with partners Roger and Suzanne Perry of Datz, Dough and Roux fame in Tampa. Along with a dependable menu of smoked meats, ribs and steaks, the New American Barbecue pushes the limits with everything from nachos and Frito pies, to tacos, salads and signature appetizers. 1101 1st Avenue S., drbbqs.com The Peabody Don’t forget to pick your jaw off the floor after stepping into The Peabody, the elegant yet modern new dining spot in the first floor of the new Research Institute at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. We loved the airy two-story space flooded with sunlight from floor to ceiling windows. A pleasant outdoor patio, beautiful indoor bar

and walk-up pastry counter are impressive. The book- and artlined walls, a salute to the George Peabody Library in Baltimore, are reminiscent of the historic clubs, libraries and shops of London. Select from a light menu of breakfast and brunch items, small plates, sandwiches, burgers and salads. Hours are 7 am to 8 pm Monday through Friday, 9 am to 8 pm Saturday and Sunday. 600 5th Street South, peabodyrestaurant.com Foodies Podcast St. Petersburg Foodies Kevin Godbee and Lori Brown, whose restaurant reviews are a regular feature in St. Pete Life, are now presenting their insight in a weekly podcast. FOOD BITES Oh la la Left Bank

Delicious Gulfport

We are happy to report that Left Bank Bistro has expanded their hours and menu and are now offering lunch. The cozy new French-inspired restaurant at 1225 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. in the Historic Uptown/Crescent Heights area opened in September with a selection of delightful pastries, coffees, bar bites and small plates in the mornings and for happy hour (with a full wine and cocktail bar worth checking out). Dining is offered both inside and on a side patio. Coffee and pastries served 7 to 11 am; lunch is from 11:30 am to 4 pm daily except Tuesday; happy hours are 4 to 8 pm Wednesday through Saturday. theleftbankbistro.com

Just when it seemed the restaurant scene was fading away in Gulfport, restaurateurs Tom Golden and Michael Stewart have brought new life to town with the 6,600-square-foot The Artisan Art and Food Collective at 2832 Beach Boulevard. Look for a cool vibe, with a bakery, art gallery, and choice of three dining spots: Whiskey Grill, The Lure and The Port. In the mood for sushi and poke bowls? Head to The Lure. If steaks is more your thing, opt for Whiskey Grille. Great hangout for a casual craft cocktail, beer or wine.

We guide you step-by-step through the entire process, from product selection and ordering to permitting, and installation to inspections, all the way through to final completion.

Also deserving bragging rights in Gulfport is Wendy Ohlendorf’s quaint Vintage Small Bites & Wine Lounge, 2914 Beach Blvd. The small plate menu focuses on fresh, healthy small plates, salads, soups and, of course, a global wine list. Look for such offerings as roasted cauliflower with curried aioli, salmon croquettes, lobster muffuletta and avocado toast, to name just a few. vintaghewinelounge.com

The Canopy, the hotel’s sleek, elegant rooftop lounge, is the hippest gathering spot in town, with a lively nightlclub ambiance, writehome-about craft cocktails, and spectacular views of Straub Park, the downtown skyline and Tampa Bay. But The Canopy is not the only venue drawing rave reviews for the venerable boutique hotel. Just as downtown St. Petersburg is thriving, so is the kitchen at Birch & Vine with Executive Chef Lee Aquino at the helm. Coming on board in January, he spent countless hours creating a more modern and visually exciting menu with a focus on locally sourced, fresh, and organic elements. Chef Lee is known for pairing seasonal flavors with bold presentations. The menu debuted in August. The Amelia Island native picked up some chops as Executive Sous Chef at Tampa Yacht and Country Club before coming to Birch & Vine, where he heads the kitchen and event catering in the Grand Ballroom. His creativity, dynamic personality and hands-on work ethic have brought exciting changes to the dining experience. “We couldn’t be more excited to have Lee lead our Birch & Vine team,” said Birchwood owner Chuck Prather, “We’ve seen amazing things happening here!” Aquino’s goal is to make Birch & Vine the top downtown waterfront restaurant for locals. “In the past, we have been considered more

of a special occasion restaurant,” he said. “I want to offer friendlier, lighter fare, and more shareable and healthier items. We’ve added a number of vegetarian dishes and gluten-free dishes. ” Look for sharable items on the new menu such as a Charcuterie Board, Cheese Slate, Chicken Lollipops and Southern Cobb Salad. Pair your own cut of steak (Delmonico, Filet Mignon or Strip) with an accompaniment of your choice (most with amazing sauces). Or select from entrees such as Scottish Salmon (horseradish crusted with champagne sabayon, teamed with honey glazed carrots and parsnips and farro beet risotto), Georgia Peach Ribs with Southern slaw and grilled peaches, or the vegetarian Cruciferous, a mélange of seasonal vegetables roasted to perfection with a side of farro. The Birch & Vine brunch menu on Saturdays and Sundays includes the aforementioned charcuterie and cheese boards and salads for nibblers, or more indulgent fare such as Tres Leche French Toast, Creole Shrimp & Grits and Wild Mushroom and Truffle Omelette. At October’s Artful Wine Pairings Dinner, a sell-out fundraiser for the St. Pete Arts Alliance held in the Grand Ballroom, Chef Lee and his team demonstrated creative flair with dishes such as Duck Ballontine with foie gras, puffed corn and blackberry celeriac puree, and Filet Mignon with a coconut-pumpkin sauce. Aquino is quick to share accolades with his team. “I have to say the success of this new menu is a collaborative effort,” he said. “I must give credit to my entire team.”

Celebrate the holidays with the gift of wine. Whether hosting or attending for Thanksgiving, Chanukah or Christmas, pairing the right wine with your food will make for delicious memories.

BY EDITH SWIERZBINSKI Chardonnay and Pinot Noir tend to be the most popular varietals to accompany our holiday meal. Chardonnay goes well with turkey, goose or latkes but let’s not forget to include Riesling, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc or Sparkling. Pinot Noir is so versatile to pair with many food choices as its light-bodied, high acidity cuts through the rich flavors. Zinfandel or Syrah are great choices for your holiday meal offering flavors of baking spice, dark cherry, cinnamon, vanilla and cloves. A crisp, dry Riesling with your Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner offers bright acidity to cut through all the fatty offerings of gravy, stuffing and potatoes. Round out the creaminess of the turkey or goose with subtle tartness in the cranberry sauce and the riesling makes the meal. Grab a Brut Sparkling and those latkes go down a little too fast! Jason Mathis CEO, St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership ST. PETE “How do you preserve the best of St. Pete, while recognizing that St. Pete is going to change?” That’s a central question for Jason Mathis, the new Chief Executive Officer of the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership. Mathis was hired in July to lead the Downtown Partnership - a private organization that invests in projectbased initiatives in the city core to benefit St. Petersburg businesses and citizens. After an extensive, months-long search process, he is filling the role left vacant by former CEO Joni James, who stepped down in late 2017. Mathis brings 20+ years of experience in nonprofit work most recently with the Downtown Alliance of Salt Lake City. St. Petersburg has long felt like home to Mathis. In fact, he can chronicle his son’s growing years through photos taken on St. Pete Beach. Despite spending his entire adult life in Salt Lake City, Mathis and his family often vacationed in or around Orlando, they’d always be sure to make their way to St. Pete Beach. Now, they’re excited to call St. Pete home full-time. As Mathis and his family adjust to their new hometown, Mathis has hit the ground running, absorbing information and meeting with as many business and community leaders as possible. Meeting the city with fresh eyes has its benefits, Mathis said. “There is this unique window when I am still an outsider and I don’t have any baggage or relationships so I can see things with fresh eyes,” he explained. “But that should be moderated a little bit with some base knowledge of what has happened before and what people care about.” He’s learning more about the city every

day, and developing priorities for his tenure at the Partnership. That includes a tight relationship with the City of St. Petersburg. “Most downtown organizations have a big public financing component,” said Mathis. “They’re financed from tax increments from the property owners, but the city is the conduit to collect those taxes and have a contract with the downtown organization.” That’s how the Downtown Alliance of Salt Lake City functioned, but not how St.

a relationship with the city as we might have if we were dependent on the city for funding.” One of Mathis’ priorities will be to work closely with the City of St. Petersburg to push Partnership initiatives forward. Development is essential, according to Mathis, for a successful city core. “No matter where you are, what city you live in, it’s going to change,” he said. “Really the goal is to acknowledge that change is going to happen but to manage that change to try to preserve the elements that make the community unique, and then bring in new amenities, new buildings, new developments that build on the character that already exists.” Mathis also sees incredible potential for building up St. Pete’s brand with the Innovation District - another project pushed forward by the Partnership. It houses USFSP, USF College of Marine Sciences, NOAA, and other leading marine research and educational facilities, as well as Johns Hopkins All Childrens, the Poynter Institute, and Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.

Petersburg Downtown Partnership works. “Here, it is nearly 100 percent private money,” says Mathis. That private money comes from the founders of the St. Petersburg Downtown Partnership. During its formation 50 years ago, the founders accumulated 10 acres of the private land that surrounded Bayboro Harbor. That land made the Partnership’s first project, the location of a University of South Florida campus within St. Petersburg, possible. It is on that land where the USFSP campus now sits. The Partnership is supported by private shareholders, but it also garners much of its income from the management of USFSP buildings, among other sources. “In some ways it’s great because you can move quickly,” said Mathis. “But in some ways I don’t know if we have had as close

“There is this secret about St. Pete in terms of this concentration - this cluster - of marine research,” said Mathis. “With climate change and the impact of oceans on coastal communities and because we have a real incentive to understand this better, St. Petersburg is uniquely positioned to be a global leader in understanding these issues and what it’s going to take to prepare cities.” Mathis’ other priorities will include a focus on arts as economic drivers, the Tropicana Field redevelopment project, the consolidation of USFSP into the full USF system, and encouraging the development of Class A office space in downtown St. Petersburg. ARTS & CULTURE

Art. Soul. Community.

The Woodson Museum is a shining star in St. Pete’s African American community

BY CINDY STOVALL When you first walk into the Carter G. Woodson African American History Museum (also referred to as the Woodson), you will always be met with the smell of simmering potpourri. It never fails, and I personally feel a sort of reassurance knowing there are some things you can just count on. It’s a small yet memorable thing that not only appeals, it speaks to the homey intimacy and warmth of this space – hardly adjectives you would think of for a museum, but true nonetheless. It even looks like a home. It has windows and French doors that lead to the lovely Legacy Garden. The layout is simple and inviting – bright and airy. There are shelves full of books. You just feel good to be visiting for any of the multiple reasons you would have to do so. If you’ve visited the Woodson, you know exactly what I mean. If you haven’t…..well then, your experience of St. Petersburg is woefully incomplete. Located in South St. Petersburg, on the “Deuces” as the area along the 22nd St. South corridor is known, the Woodson, for good or bad, has become the keeper of the area’s rich African-

StPeteLifeMag.com

American cultural legacy. Good because they are more than up to the task. Bad, because so many iconic venues of the past have fallen away, leaving a great responsibility to the Woodson to tell the stories, share the art, and celebrate the residents. This is truly a team effort with an actively engaged board, like current president Dana Battle, and incredibly dedicated volunteers. But the force behind what makes the Woodson all that it is, is the unstoppable Terri Lipsey Scott. Scott joined the Woodson in 2008 as a board member, then became chair and ultimately took the mantle as Executive Director last year. She brings with her a unique love of art, education, and community – all the elements that bring diversity, engagement, and dialogue to each and every exhibit and event. The house is packed for every museum happening, and Scott knows how to throw a party. The food is always delectable, the decor always impressive and elegant, the activities memorable and thought provoking. To accomplish this predominantly through volunteerism? It’s just damned impressive.

ARTS & CULTURE Heritage Trail Walking Tour Preserve the ‘Burg will offer this special tour on November 17 from 10 am to noon leaving from the Woodson in partnership with the African American Heritage Association. The walk will be along the Deuces (22nd St. S.), the once-vibrant main street of St. Pete’s African American community during the segregation era. The tour will be led by Gwendolyn Reese, a member of the City’s Historic Preservation Commission, who will offer some of her reflections and experiences in growing up in the neighborhood. Cost $10; tour reservations are recommended by going to preservetheburg.org or calling 727) 824-7802.

St. Pete’s Forgotten History Surrounding the Woodson’s current location are the echoes and ghosts of a bygone era that harken to memories of a significant African-American cultural epicenter. The Manhattan Casino was once and for many decades, a mecca for jazz and musical greats like Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, and too many other icons to name here. With declining attendance, the music at the Manhattan was silenced forever only recently. The nearby Royal Theater, opened in 1948, was one of only two theaters African-Americans were permitted to attend. Along with films, it hosted community talent shows and with its luminous marquee, was the jewel of the neighborhood. Though it still stands, it is no longer the “Apollo” theater of the South that it once was. Jim Crow laws and the segregation of the times forced St. Petersburg’s African-American community to build their own (Mercy) hospital, pharmacy, schools, business associations, and infrastructure. However, they did it with pride and tenacity, and many memorable personalities emerged to forge the legacy that the Woodson protects today. For the most part, only residents of a certain age remember these characters – these heroes of a rich history and proud culture. Residents like 104-year-old Bonnie Johnson whose birthday was celebrated at the Woodson, is a perfect example. In addition to the elegant party, Miss Bonnie was treated to red carpet treatment including limo, make-over, and spa treatments. If you ask residents outside of the corridor, or in North County, many are surprisingly unaware of all the people and places that made this neighborhood

so remarkable. The Woodson as legacy keeper is making strides, through superior programming, in helping us all look back with more informed eyes and truly appreciate all that came before. Looking Forward Understanding the past cannot be overstated but creating a rich and meaningful future legacy is equally important to Terri Lipsey Scott and she makes it a priority for the mission of the Carter G. Woodson African-American History Museum. “We are creating new traditions that educate and celebrate children, and programming that enhances dialogue and understanding,” she said. Scott is so dedicated to her community, that her recent (and ongoing) advocacy of the threatened adjacent Jordan Park neighborhood, inspired an appointment to the housing commission by the mayor. Scott and the Woodson facilitate partnerships with many not for profit organizations to create mutually beneficial events and exhibits. Substantive new art by African-American artists, featuring African-American culture, is curated and hung every other month. It acts as both focal point and backdrop to all the other activities that are conducted. Book clubs for young and old foster literacy and encourage dialogue.

PHOTO/ROSSI NEWSON

The Namesake Carter Godwin Woodson, a scholar, journalist, and historian, is known to be one of the first to study African-American history and is credited with originating African-American History Week in the 1920s. Jimmy Carter later designated the month of February as national African-American History Month. Woodson also founded “The Journal of Negro History,” as well as what became the Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History. Currently based in Washington DC, the ASALH’s mission is “to promote, research, preserve, interpret, and disseminate information about Black life, history, and culture to the global community.” It seems only fitting that Woodson is the inspiration for the museum that bears his name, for that is exactly what they do every single day. Dr. Woodson would surely be proud of this living tribute to his consequential life.

Annual events like the recently held DiversiTea, celebrate our differences and our commonalities ... all with fancy hats and scones. The First Ladies of African American History annual event celebrates excellence and the achievements of women in our community. The annual Silver Spoon Tea Party celebrates girls by treating them to beauty treatments, limo rides, and a special party that plant the seeds of confidence and pride. This is just a small sampling of the multitude and variety of events that are not only entertaining, but highly impactful in the lives of all who attend.

ARTS & CULTURE Today, the Deuces and South St. Pete are making a comeback. Places like the Enoch Davis Center, and the James Weldon Johnson library are central to community life. The city manages an African-American Heritage Trail tour as part of its cultural outreach programming. Artist studios with proximity to the Warehouse Arts District, and great restaurants like Chief’s Creole Café and Callaloo/Pipo’s are making an impact as well as all the small businesses guided and promoted by associations like Deuces Live St. Pete. The Woodson helps fill a void left by the Manhattan by welcoming some pretty famous people: St. Pete native Angela Bassett, Rep. John Lewis, Dr. Cornell West, Andrew Gillum, playwright Kenny Leon, Ambassador Patty Aslop, John Hope Franklin, and the famous folk artist Miss Ruby C. Williams, just to name a few have graced this place and delighted the citizens. But one of my favorite stories is about Duke Ellington band member and world famous trombonist, Buster Cooper. Born in St. Pete, Cooper never missed a chance to entertain here long into his retirement. Now, after his passing, Cooper’s niece, Broadway alumni and rising jazz vocalist, Siobhan Monique entertains at the Woodson regularly. I just love the symmetry of that.

The exhibit adorning the walls for the holidays, and through January, features the vibrant and beautiful work of artist Kenneth Falana. This 30+ piece feast-for-the-eyes is a must-see and the perfect accompaniment to the highlight of the season – the Bring on the Dolls, Balls and Books event. Massive numbers of toys are collected, the halls beautifully and lovingly decked, and then it’s time to bring in the children. They get to visit and tell their dreams to a Santa that looks like they do, eat delectable treats, and unwrap a bounty they might never have known otherwise. “Doing this and seeing their faces means everything,” says Scott. “It makes my year.”

Holiday Joy The holidays are especially joyful at the Woodson starting with the presence of the many diverse members of One City Chorus. Starting in October, organizers Jon Atherton and James Mack, a married couple who met through their mutual love of and background in choral music, hold packed house rehearsals each Monday evening. Members sing with purpose about freedom and equality under the loving and humorous guidance of conductor, Jon. As a result of their 3-year partnership with the Woodson, the chorus participates in First Night on New Year’s Eve, and performs several other shows including a finale-like performance at the Palladium in February. Ringing in a New Life After dedicating the St. Anthony’s Hospital Cancer Center Cancer Survivor Bell earlier this year, Sister Mary McNally became the first person to ring it. That’s because Sr. Mary, vice president of Mission at St. Anthony’s Hospital and a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany (N.Y.), the founders of St. Anthony’s Hospital, is also a cancer survivor. “Ringing the bell is an important part of the healing process,” said Sr. Mary. “We want all of our patients to feel that they can celebrate the end of their treatment.” “It’s so wonderful to hear the sound of the bell,” said Sandra Bailey, Cancer Center manager. “We love our patients and they become family to us. But when they complete treatment, we tell them that we don’t want to see them again. Now we can see them as they return to ring the bell for each year since their treatment ended.” The practice of ringing the bell three times at the end of cancer treatment represents the restoration of harmony and balance in a patient’s life, Bailey said. Many hospitals throughout the United States and abroad have adopted ringing the bell as a symbol of renewal for their patients.

When the bell was dedicated in April, current and former patients rang the bell more than 150 times to signal the end of treatment or the number of years since they had been treated. In all 157 patients have rung the bell, Bailey said. Providing quality care for patients is the calling for the team at the St. Anthony’s Hospital Cancer Center. The center offers a full range of cancer care services, including prevention, education, diagnosis and treatment. The center is a state-of-the-art facility, with advanced technology, managed by board-certified cancer specialists that provide quality and compassionate care for patients. The center offers comprehensive diagnostic imaging and screening services; comprehensive surgical services; diagnosis, staging and treatment monitoring; and leading diagnostic and therapeutic treatments. A specialty at the cancer center is the St. Anthony’s Pancreatic Cancer Program. The Pancreatic Cancer Program offers patients a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach utilizing a team of experienced physicians and nurses which has been able to provide high-quality outcomes for patients.

Well, the holiday season befalls our beautiful ‘Burg once again and it seems each year it arrives even sooner than the year before, doesn’t it? No worry. The holidays in St. Petersburg shine bigger and brighter with each passing season leaving no shortage of wonderful, arty things to do and see. Here are a few ideas for your sun-soaked holidays in the Sunshine City. Who needs a white Christmas, anyway? Don’t forget to catch my podcast, Beauty & The ‘Burg, on the Helium Radio Network at www.heliumradio.com BY CINDY STOVALL

On Stage freeFall Theatre Company goes for the gusto with a unique Christmas tale. “Every Christmas Story Ever Told” is the tale of a troupe of actors who, in their rebellion of classic holiday fare, embark on creating a show that embodies stories, songs, and traditions from the familiar to those celebrated around the world. In expanding the horizons of the audience, the troupe discovers, or should I say, rediscovers, their love of seasonal theater and of holiday celebration. Running Dec. 1-30, this show is sure to delight young and old alike. freefalltheatre.com

American Stage has a wonderful holiday offering for Jane Austen fans and lovers of period pieces. “Miss Bennett: Christmas at Pemberly” acts as a sequel to “Pride and Prejudice” and is set at the Georgian era home of the Newlywed Darcys. Ready for the twist? The story focuses on the life and love of middle daughter, Mary, tired of being overshadowed by the exploits of her sisters. Being a middle child myself, I totally relate and can’t wait to see what 19th century shenanigans Mary finds herself in. American Stage’s LOVE. OUT. LOUD. season is certainly on a roll with a memorable holiday show, directed by executive artistic director Stephanie Gularte. It runs from Nov. 28 to Dec. 30. americanstage.org

Museum Happenings

As I shared last issue, you can still catch “Pinocchio” Nov. 9-18 at the St. Pete Opera Company. The wooden boy learns the value of telling the truth in this classic story, set to music of Mozart, Donizetti, Verdi, Offenbach, and more. The whole family is welcome to this one-hour performance suitable for all ages. Also, for the holidays, SPOC presents “Seasonal Sparkle,” a musical extravaganza on Dec. 18-19 only, at The Palladium. This season’s new program includes excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s

First, let me start this segment by reminding you what amazing holiday gifts can be found in museum stores! Unique and very memorable items are awaiting your shopping sprees – free of crushing crowds and Black Friday brawls. And, when you check out the stores at Dali and Museum of Fine Arts, for example, you can also get lunch at their cafes, no admission required. Our newer museums, the James and Imagine museums also have beautiful arty wares for your gift-giving pleasure.

“Nutcracker,” a tribute to classic Christmas pops songs, and a special operatic set inspired by the stars, the moon, and the heavens. stpeteopera.org As much as we adore our ‘Burg, lovers of great theater can’t be confined by a big ‘ole bay, so we give some love to Tampa’s Stageworks Theatre (and Karla Hartley), for their seasonal offerings. Stageworks brings us “Winter Wonderettes,” a holiday take on this musical favorite that finds our girls entertaining at the company Christmas party and saving the holidays (and the party) for everyone when Santa goes missing! Runs Dec. 7-23. stageworkstheatre.org Of course, no holiday would be complete without an opportunity to see Tchaikovsky’s classic “The Nutcracker.” The holiday favorite is brought to life by St. Petersburg Ballet Company and a cast of up-and-coming youth Nov. 30 – Dec. 2 at The Palladium. mypalladium.org

ARTS & CULTURE The James Museum of Western & Wildlife Art, in its short tenure, has established a truly Western persona – or so we thought. Get ready to expand your view of the James, as the museum’s second special exhibition, ”James Michaels: An American Pop Life,” comes in without a cowboy in sight. Michaels, a Tampa Bay artist, exhibits his work in Pop Expressionism and Painterly Realism.

Give the Gift of Entertainment!

Inspired by popular culture, childhood memories, and life experiences, Michaels’ colorful canvases feature art history references alongside depictions of classic toys and cartoons. Runs November 17 through March 3. thejamesmuseum.org

Gallery & Alternative Another great place to have “arty” shopping fun, is surely ARTpool Gallery on Central Avenue. Owner Marina Williams will not only greet you with a huge smile, she and her staff will help you find THE most perfect eclectic gift from their treasure trove of vintage clothing, jewelry, art, records and much more. On 2, yes 2, weekends in December, the ever popular Crafty Fest will expand your choices with the wares of multiple talented vendors to ease your shopping soul. Dec. 1-2 and Dec. 15-16. artpoolgallery.com Florida CraftArt for the holiday is a must for any St. Petersburg shopper in the know. So many artists represented at a wide variety of price points and unlimited genres and styles ensure success and very happy giftees! On Nov. 17-18, this Central Avenue mainstay hosts its 21st annual CraftArt Festival. I’ll just say this. Don’t miss it. www.floridacraftart.org Of course, the perfect cap to holidays in the ‘Burg, is the family friendly event, First Night. Ring in 2019 all around downtown with multiple performances and activities in all your favorite venues culminating in a brilliant fireworks display. Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital New Research Building Opens Door to Discovery

BY MIKE STEPHENSON From certain angles, the windows of the new Johns Hopkins All Children’s Research and Education Building reflect both the hospital and the Outpatient Care Center, capturing the inclusive and collaborative nature the structure is designed to promote. The $95 million, 225,000-square-foot building was publicly unveiled during a ribbon cutting ceremony on September xx on the hospital’s campus near downtown St. Petersburg. The ceremony drew more than 700 people from the hospital staff and the community and featured St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman; Dean Paul Rothman, M.D., the CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine; Kevin Sowers, president of the Johns Hopkins Health System; Jonathan Ellen, M.D., president and vice dean of Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, and other dignitaries. Many community and staff members were able to tour the building before or after the ceremony. “It’s more than a building,” Ellen said. “This is a vision brought to life by a community that we believe can change the world.” The Research and Education Building houses the hospital’s institutes, its graduate medical education and simulation programs,

an expanded biorepository and a new team of fundamental scientists who will seek to understand the origins of diseases and how to prevent them. “The capabilities we are creating in this building—and, more important, the world-class physicians, surgeons, researchers and staff who will work there—will help us achieve the mission we set out to do,” Ellen said, “which is to lead the country in discovery and translational research that can lead to better health for children.” Rothman says it all started with an integration of the hospital into Johns Hopkins Medicine in 2011. “I think back to the vision of the board of trustees of All Children’s Hospital,” he says. “About 10 years ago, they decided they wanted to make All Children’s one of the top academic children’s hospitals in the country. That was a bold vision to think about what was possible.” The architecture includes “forum stairs” designed for sitting and chatting, The Peabody restaurant and other flexible and collaborative areas to facilitate interaction. “We designed the

center of the building to be collaborative space where people can meet, write on white boards on the walls and really work together,” Ellen says. “We were quite intentional about wanting to promote getting out of your office and interacting with colleagues.”

Jennifer Arnold joined as medical director of the simulation program in 2017 and designed the building’s expansive Center for Medical Simulation and Innovative Education, which has spaces to replicate operating rooms, patient rooms and even an elevator.

The Office of Medical Education will have additional space to accommodate its expanding programs. Johns Hopkins All Children’s has residency programs with both the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine along with a growing number of fellowships.

With the new building, Johns Hopkins All Children’s added a group of top-level basic scientists who are members of or affiliated with the new Institute for Fundamental Biomedical Research. The building includes 40,000 square feet of total lab space.

HSN/Casa Open Boutique As CASA, Pinellas County’s largest certified domestic violence support agency, prepared for October’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month, HSN Cares worked behind the scenes at CASA’s shelter to create First Impressions Boutique -- a clothing store

stocked with Home Shopping Network clothing, accessories, and undergarments, that will provide survivors of domestic violence the hand up that they need to rebuild their lives and go back into the workforce. The goal was to create a boutique with new clothing donated by HSN for the women who are staying at the shelter to wear on job interviews to ensure they have something new to wear that is appropriate for getting back into the workforce. After months of work by HSN employees, the ribbon cutting took place on September 14. “For many survivors of domestic violence, shopping in the HSN First Impressions Boutique will be the first clothing choice they are able to make separate from the control of an abuser,” said Lariana Forsythe, CASA CEO. “HSN Cares has been a tremendous partner to CASA and we hope HSN’s impact can serve as an example for other community members to find unique and creative ways to get involved.”

HSN Cares is dedicated to empowering women and helping families in times of need locally, nationally and globally. The HSN Outlet and Emplorium stores held a fundraiser that, coupled with a corporate donation, generated $50,000 in support of CASA.

Ginger Lettelleir

Owner, WoodHouse Day Spa

BY CINDY COCKBURN

When our Mayor and Chamber President presided over yet another ribbon cutting in our booming city, we attended the gathering, heard the speeches, joined in with applause. But after a sneak peek inside the gorgeous facility with owners and entrepreneurs Mark and Ginger Lettelleir, we assure you this is certainly NOT just “business as usual.” It’s a slice of heaven in St. Pete, a combo of magical peace and serenity flavored with the aroma of calm.

How did you decide on the Woodhouse franchise? The Woodhouse franchise aligns with the overall look that I wanted for my spa. It also includes unique treatments that are results oriented. The tipping point for me were the Core Values that The Woodhouse franchise embraces - Building Relationships With People and Serving People to Help Transform Lives. I think that is beautiful.

The new $1.5 million Woodhouse Day Spa is located in the James Museum complex at 75 1st Street South. The spa is 6,000 square feet with 70 unusual treatments, and a dream come true for former schoolteacher Ginger Lettelleir. We caught up with her recently, sitting near the fireplace in the spa relaxation room and asked: how did this dream come about?

What will we find inside this 6,000 square foot spa? You will find beautifully appointed massage and facial rooms as well as a tub room, duet room and Vichy shower room. Our Quiet Room is the heart of the spa. Here you will find ample seating to begin your experience while enjoying a beverage, reading a magazine, or simply relaxing in a quiet environment. Our target customers are adults who wish to destress, unplug, and be pampered for a while.

What is your background and how long have you had this dream to open a spa? I am a retired educator. I mostly taught primary grades, but I was also an Assistant Principal in an elementary school. Opening a spa has been a dream of mine most of my life. As a little girl, I enjoyed all things spa related and never grew out of that. Oftentimes, I played spa music in my classroom while my students worked. It’s definitely calming. What kind of research did you undertake to find the right spa concept unique to St. Pete? Since I lacked the business background, I looked into spa franchises. I was actually surprised and extremely happy to find The Woodhouse franchise because it so closely aligned with the vision of what I wanted my spa to be like. What was your inspiration? After visiting many different spas all over the country and even on vacations abroad I knew that I wanted my spa to feel warm, relaxing, inviting, and a place you could feel was an escape from reality. I also wanted it to have a Ritz Carlton type of service in which each guest is treated with the utmost respect and attention to details.

What is a Vichy shower and why should we care that it’s the only one in town? A Vichy shower allows for a unique treatment in which an invigorating waterfall streams down to gently massage you while relaxing on a padded table. This treatment invigorates the senses and increases blood flow within the body. The experience is enhanced with a wrap or scrub and allows the treatment to be completed without having to move to another room for removal of product. Of the 70 treatments you offer, what is your favorite? My favorite treatment is our Hydrafacial with the CTGF enhancement. This facial not only exfoliates, but it also deeply hydrates the skin. The CTGF enhancement helps to firm the skin and diminish fine lines and wrinkles. The facial itself is also very relaxing. What do you love about St. Pete? When the weather cools off, I enjoy having a drink outside on the Canopy rooftop at the Birchwood or have brunch outside at Cassis. I love the Sundial shops and movie theater. First Friday is always fun and there’s almost always live music downtown or at the beach.

BY BETH ANN DRAKE Innisbrook Golf Resort is well known as a destination for meetings, weddings, tennis, and, of course, golfing. It’s easy to forget what a great escape it can be for just a day. The worldclass Salamander Spa and Packard’s Steakhouse are a great combination for the perfect day of indulgence. Within a short drive of St. Petersburg, the resort is nestled on 900 acres of rolling hills and 70 acres of lakes in Palm Harbor. With 12 treatment rooms and an amazing menu of services, the Salamander Spa is an oasis of relaxation. We highly recommend the Signature Ritual, a massage experience that begins with a scalp massage including essential oils and ends with a foot scrub and heated towels. Next, unwind in the steam sauna or hot tub or enjoy the sunroom with a view of the golf course. The Signature Facial will leave you glowing, and includes lip

plumping and collagen eye treatment. Gentlemen, there are spa packages specifically designed for you, as well. Choose from a spa haircut, back treatment, massages, facials and even manscaping. After your spa experience, why not round out the day with exceptional dining at Packard’s Steakhouse? Overlooking the Copperhead Golf Course, you can choose from the freshest seafood or aged premium beef steaks …. or both! Reservations are recommended. Try the Copperhead Platter for an eclectic shared plate. It includes something delicious for all tastes, including Barbeque Bacon Shrimp, Sticky Meatballs, Conch Fritters, Calamari Fries and Goat Cheese Cakes. SPL HOLIDAYS Champagne Kisses Let’s face it, top shelf and craft alcohol, liqueurs and aperitifs can stretch the pocketbook. One delicious alternative that most people love is the champagne cocktail. Skip the expensive champagne and opt for a cheaper version of sparkling wine, cava or Prosecco as your bubbly base. Elevate your classic glass of bubbly simply by adding a bit of sugar and a few dashes of bitters. A long spiral of lemon zest garnish makes any drink look fancy. Champagne Cocktail 1 teaspoon granulated sugar or 1 sugar cube 3–5 dashes bitters (such as Angostura) 4 ounces champagne or sparkling dry wine Long spiral lemon zest (for serving) Combine sugar and bitters in a champagne flute. Add a splash of champagne and stir gently to combine. Pour in remaining champagne; garnish with lemon zest. A homemade cranberry simple syrup (see facing page) puts this sparkling cocktail recipe into fancy party-worthy status.

Hey Bartender Need a little help when it comes to crafting those cocktails? The Cocktail Companion A Guide to Cocktail History, Culture, Trivia and Favorite Drinks, is at your service. Bartender Cheryl Charming, considered the longtime Queen of the New Orleans cocktail scene, provides plenty of tips and guidance with recipes for both classic and contemporary cocktails. Not just a recipe book, this entertaining tome is an ode to the cocktail, with loads of historical facts, myths and trivia. Want to make your own bitters? What’s the appropriate garnish? Dr. Forbes Enjoying the Holidays Guilt Free ADVERTORIAL

BY MICHELLE BOUDREAU Typically, around this time of year with the holidays, good lifestyle habits tend to get derailed. Healthy eating, exercise, and taking supplements will be a thought of the past for most. Two solid months of, well, for lack of a better word “gluttony” can really wreak havoc on our health. Not only are we indulging in delectable treats with beverages and food, we also get stressed out with shopping, travel, family visits and accomplishing all we need to by celebration day! It is such a joyful time of year, I asked Dr. Forbes for some insight on how we can enjoy the season with so many temptations surrounding us. We are all going to do it… we will get off track. So how do you diet during the holidays? True it happens to everyone. First let me start with: I do not believe in the word “diet”. It has a negative connotation to it, when people go on a “diet” they feel deprived, when someone feels deprived they tend to eat more or worse. I believe in educating my patients that food can be the best medicine or it can be the worst medicine, you

72

StPeteLifeMag.com

November/December 2018

have to listen to your body with how you react to certain foods. I feel the general public has been misled with which foods are healthy or unhealthy. I prefer to educate them as to the best nutrient rich foods, foods that will help lower inflammation, prevent aging, balance hormones, make them feel sexier. Yes, eating and stress can and does affect your hormones, even suppressing the growth hormone, the largest anti-aging hormone, which can make you gain weight, age prematurely and harm the libido. Your food intake will affect your energy and productivity. My passion is to get my patients addicted to feeling good! The goal is to make people feel sharper, trimmer and sexier than they’ve ever felt, and giving them tools to do so with ease. Can you share some tips with us on what to do if we do overindulge? We’re all going to indulge. It’s about getting back on track and supplying your body with adequate nutrients and supplements. I’m not talking about cardboard and grass kind of food, I am talking

CONVERSATIONS about good delicious yet nutrient dense foods. If you overindulge you can try intermittent fasting, best overnight, do not eat for 12 to 16 hours, typically from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. with liquids only, water, black coffee or tea. Doing this can recharge your body and actually allow for the growth hormone to release at night for cell recovery, your anti-aging hormone. Intermittent fasting helps detox your body, reduce stress and encourages regeneration. Be sure you’re getting enough sleep, staying hydrated, and enough healthy fat. We have villainized fat for so long, cutting out the fat leads to bad choices with cravings, usually with sugar and carbs. Also, be sure that you get enough healthy salt in your diet like Himalayan salt, it’s rich in minerals. We’ve made salt the bad guy, and when we cut out salt we tend to replace it with sugar. Sugar equates to being tired, lack of energy, lack of libido, premature aging and many diseases. Also, one of my favorite supplements is magnesium. Magnesium is involved in over 400 reactions in your body. I have helped more people with magnesium than any medication that I have prescribed. It is extremely helpful for detoxification and it helps calm the nerves. It also helps with blood sugar control and reducing cravings. Your best advice overall for enjoying the holidays? My advice is to change the main focus of each holiday and make it about the gathering, seeing people you love, the joy of the event with being grateful for friends, family, good people around us rather than the focus on overindulging in unhealthy food and beverages. The joy of the event is a better feeling than filling our stomachs until we feel like they will pop and we are bloated, we can’t even move passed out on the sofa falling asleep, we can’t carry on a conversation. “It’s all about balance, choose the joy and to feel good.”

Habitat Pinellas Dedicates 500th Home On October 8, Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas celebrated its 500th home dedication with several hundred community members, supporters, elected officials and volunteers on hand. Since 1985, Habitat has constructed homes for struggling families in Pinellas County. Volunteers and the future homeowners construct the homes, which are sold at no profit and financed with a zero-interest loan. With every new construction, Habitat Pinellas creates homeownership opportunities for families with the help of the community volunteers, corporate donors, civic organizations and county officials. “This marks a significant moment in our history,” said CEO Mike Sutton. “The 500th house equates to 625,000

volunteers’ hours, 100,000 volunteers and nearly $100,000,000 funds raised since 1985.” Moving into the home is Laquinda Currie, a single mother raising two young sons while living with Sickle Cell Disease. Habitat Pinellas is the second largest Habitat affiliate in new home construction out of 1,300 in the United States, with 60 new home builds planned for the next fiscal year. More than 25 corporate sponsors locally contribute funding and/or volunteers to build homes in Pinellas.
