Design Inspiration

BY BETH ANN DRAKE

Living in paradise means that our living space extends to the outdoors most of the year.

This year’s design trends are focusing on interior looks and styles flowing outdoors with seamless transitions. Whether classic or contemporary, minimalist or maximalist, fusing indoor and outdoor décor to bring the spaces together is a common theme.

The use of natural materials is on the rise, such as plants, stone and wood for a sustainable and organic feel. Bold colors, patterns and textures are coming to the forefront as opposed to the subtle grays of last year and statement lighting like eye-catching chandeliers and pendants are being used to create a focal point in rooms.

The kitchen seems to have a gravitational pull in any home, so why not make it an oasis for yourself and guests? We talked with Kristin Bobowski, owner of Granite Girl, Queen of Quartz about what’s on the horizon in kitchen and bath design.

“We seem to be getting away from grays. Gold and black are becoming popular accent colors, but light and bright is still the trend,” she said. Her advice to homeowners beginning a project? “Pick what you love. Not what the neighbor loves or what’s on HGTV. They are good places to start for ideas but make sure you keep your own taste in mind.”

Many homeowners become overwhelmed with where to start a project. Kristin’s advice is “Start with the thing you care about most. If it’s counters then pick them first and build your design around your counter choice. If it’s floors then pick the floors and build from there.”

Design for durability

Sustainable design has become a priority for many who want to incorporate more eco-friendly materials in their living space. Stephanie Stegman of Elegant Outdoor Living is seeing a market that is mixing different materials to create a more organic look. Twisted rope with powder coated aluminum in outdoor furnishing frames or ceramic with teak table tops for dining or accent tables. Sustainably made furniture has not only long lasting durability, but warranty coverage as well.

“We are seeing a high demand for modular seating collections that can include up to 12 pieces to combine and create unlimited seating configurations for a customer’s needs and space,” Stegman says. Accent tables to accompany outdoor seating in styles beyond the traditional patio furniture “set” are also on the rise. “In the past, end tables and coffee tables were always part of the set and matched the sofa and chairs. Now people are purchasing tables with more style and design. It’s a simple and cost effective way to update your existing furniture and patio.”

Her advice for choosing outdoor furniture for the Florida sun and salt air is to invest in quality outdoor materials that won’t rust and always check your fabric. “Make sure the cushions are made using a solution dyed acrylic fabric,” she warns. “High performance outdoor and tested fabric brands include Sunbrella, Outdura, Bliss and Sunbelievable.”

Storage Solutions

Interior designing can pose challenges as well, depending upon the space you have to work with. Multi-functional spaces have gained popularity such as home offices that can also be used as guest rooms. Minimalism is also on the rise, which focuses on simple uncluttered spaces being appreciated for their calming atmosphere.

Tony Montanez of New Closets Today sees a lot of demand for storage solutions. “Older homes and condos tend to have small spaces that need to be maximized and newer homes may have more space, but often come with basic wire shelves.” Most of his clients choose a white shaker or modern style because it’s clean, bright and timeless. These styles are kept in stock so they can deliver and install quickly.

Because every project is different, Montanez encourages homeowners to keep an open mind. “Sometimes people think they have to have everything figured out. We design spaces all the time and can offer solutions and design options that they may not have considered.”
