March 19, 2021, by way of a virtual ceremony held at the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron in Auckland, Ed Baird was inducted into the 2021 America’ s Cup Hall of Fame. After a brilliant video relating to Ed’s distinguished career, his old teammate, Brad Butterworth, introduced his video acceptance speech and drank Ed’s share of the champagne!

[“The Herreshoff Marine Museum/ACHoF has inducted over ninety individuals since its founding in 1992. Candidates eligible for consideration include members of the crew, designers, builders, syndicate leaders, supporters, chroniclers, and other individuals of merit; each nominee is judged on the basis of outstanding ability, international recognition, character, performance, and contributions to the sport.”]

Ed’s Comments: “I was completely taken by surprise to Ed’s America’s Cup timeline: two-time winlearn of my inclusion to this amazing group. I had no idea ner of the America’s Cup—as coach of Team I was being considered and couldn’t believe my ears when New Zealand in 1995 and as helmsman of Gary Jobson told me on a video call. He said he wanted to Team Alinghi in 2007; 2000 Young America see my face when he gave me the news! as Skipper; 2002-03 TV Commentator; 2010 As I've absorbed this distinction and learned more about Alinghi as coach & alternate helmsman. those who have been inducted, to date, I still can’t believe that I'm part of this historic club. It’ s such an honor being included with legendary names like Vanderbilt, Lipton, Herreshoff and Sopwith. I’m listed with Dennis Conner, Sir Peter Blake, Sir Russell Coutts and Ted Turner. I've been lucky enough to be on teams with over 20 of the recipients of this award, but I never dreamed that I would be included with them in the Hall. I’m an incredibly fortunate native of St. Petersburg, Florida, who happened to get involved in our sport at the right time, with terrific mentors and the tremendous support of the St. Petersburg Yacht Club and its members. I have great appreciation for all of my competitors and teammates over the years. I thank my parents and friends for encouraging me to keep racing. And I feel so fortunate to have had the incredible love and unwavering support of my wife, Lisa, from the day we met. Without her in my life, none of these wonderful accolades would have happened!

I have one message for the young sailors in our club who are just starting out. The sport of sailing can do amazing things for you—the people you meet, the places you see and the experiences you have are life-changing. Enjoy it as much as you can. You never know where it will take you!”
