Yachting Information Committee

by Donna Sue Marks, Yachting Information Chair

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), World Sailing (WS), and the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee are working on a review of the proposed Mixed Two Person Offshore Keelboat Event for Paris 2024 Olympic competition.

Why is this important? There are some challenges regarding Field of Play security, scope and complexity, broadcast cost and complexity, and World Sailing not having the opportunity to deliver an Offshore World Championship.

What does this mean...More assessment of the Mixed Offshore Event is taking place. The IOC has requested that WS propose alternative event(s) for sailings 10th medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. A deadline from the IOC is in place for which WS must agree upon proposed alternatives. As you read this, WS Mid-Year meeting will be held virtually May 10th-14th. Submissions for alternative events will be presented. Those events must adhere to criteria framework provided by the IOC. They will discuss the submissions ahead of making their recommendations to Council.

The World Sailing Council will meet on May 14, 2021 across two sessions and will discuss and vote on the submissions. This will ensure the process concludes ahead of the IOC deadline for new proposals, which is May 26, 2021.

Any bets on what the alternative sailing event(s) will be? I am curious to know what you think - email your feedback to: dsmarks64@gmail.com. I am leaning towards a highperformance event, at this point it is anyone’s guess.

SPYC Junior Sailing Update by Todd Fedyszyn

Over the weekend of April 10th -11th, the SPYC Junior Sailing Team competed in the annual Sailfest Regatta hosted by the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. With over 200 sailors in attendance, this was one of the biggest local regattas of the last year. With a late season cold front passing through, conditions for the weekend were full on with 20-30 knots of breeze and frequent storms. Sailors were fortunate to get in three races on Saturday before the conditions deteriorated and unfortunately racing on Sunday was cancelled due to heavy storms.

In the Opti RWB fleet our SPYC sailors once again showed that hard work pays off. John Hartney took home the overall win as well as 1st overall in the blue fleet. Rosie Simpson (pictured to the right) finished in 3rd overall and 2nd in red fleet, Sophia Fuller was 5th overall, Chris Shaffer was 6th overall and 2nd in blue, Ryder Ellis was 7th overall and 3rd in blue, and Jackson Lee was 9th overall. Leah Abrams finished 18th overall and 1st in white fleet, and Bennett Lamb finished 28th overall and 3rd in white. Also competing in the Opti RWB were Adam and Reid

Mendelblatt, Reece Ellis, Wesley Wood, Jan Mistak, Blake Vincent, Maija and Anna Andert, Gloria Privis, Finn Cox, Parker Connell, Cole Rogers, and Jad Aberdrabbo.

On the Laser course SPYC was once again well represented with 11 sailors competing in the Laser Radial and 4.7 fleets. Guthrie Braun was our top performer in the Radial class finishing in 2nd place overall. Guthrie was followed by Preston Weaver in 6th overall and Ethan Danielson in 7th. In the Laser 4.7 fleet Dorothy Mendelblatt finished 5th overall and was 2nd female. Also competing were Ava

Shakespeare, Logan Rimel, Peyton Weaver, Sidney Moyer, Kate Danielson, Bella Shakespeare, and Jack Carter.

On the Green Fleet course only one race was sailed as the conditions proved to be extremely challenging with big winds and waves. Our new racers displayed true grit fighting hard and showing everyone that they are the upcoming stars of the future. Representing SPYC were

Reece and Scarlett Bizouarn, Ethan Cox, Cooper Lee, Thomas Weidner, and Dalton Cellemare.

How many times have you entered the Club through the East entrance and walked by the flagpole—or, even better, had your picture taken standing there in front of the mysterious presence who resides there—and wondered about her history? The mystery is revealed. Please read on! The ‘Old Girl’ adorned the bow of an 1881 Glasgow built iron hulled British Barque, Duncraig. [Google this ship for an interesting story and picture of our “Old Girl’ on the bow!]. She was later sold to a Norwegian shipping firm. In 1921, she was towed to Bermuda dismasted and sold at auction in St. George for use as a coal lighter (barge). At that time the figurehead was removed and mounted in front of the new owner’s office. After many years as a lighter and the passing of coal burners, the vessel was eventually towed to sea and committed to Davy Jones’ locker at the bottom of the sea. During a visit to Bermuda in 1925, Mr. Walter Fuller persuaded the owner of the figurehead to sell it to him for 100 lbs. He then very graciously donated it to the Club and Mr. Wally Bishop worked on restoration and beautification of the ‘Old Girl’. The next time you pass by, take a look at her— An ’Old Girl’ of many years and experiences. Affectionately known as ...

Recipient of US Sailing’ s Virginia Long Sail Training Service & Support Award

* * *

The Sail Training Service & Support Award honors individuals who, through their efforts, unselfishly assist and enable a sailing program or sailing instruction in a supportive role. As a recipient of this award, Donna Sue embodies the nature of this award by continually offering her skills as a Professional Race Officer, working closely with both youth and adult events. Donna Sue has also championed the “kites” helping to increase racing venues and opportunities throughout the region. As Commodore of the Florida Sailing Assoc. (FSA), Donna Sue started her tenure by traveling to as many sailing centers, clubs and events as possible promoting sailing/racing and helping build knowledge for Professional Race Officers as well as to hear from the stakeholders throughout the state – how can FSA be more supportive and relevant to its members? While FSA Cmdr., Donna Sue worked tirelessly to support youth racing by offering youth regatta reimbursement grants to families of member organizations. She later agreed to include organizational training grant reimbursements to help close the gap in training needs throughout the state and has shared training information with not only SPYC, but also with the region and beyond. * * *

“Her energy appears limitless – Kiting has been a significant piece of the work she has focused on to bring this form of ‘sailing’ into a recognized and rightful place. Her character is marked by integrity, fairness, safety for all, and encouraging others to succeed!”

In the year 2020, March brought challenges to our entire world. The Lightning Regatta was the first regatta that had to be cancelled at SPYC due to Covid-19. We were able to host a successful event this year with a smaller registration than in “normal” years. We had 25 participants due to social distancing confines. Our largest event ever was 77 boats!

There was outstanding racing on Tampa Bay. PRO Todd Fedyszyn led a flawless team of Race Committee. He pulled off three races a day over the first three days and then cancelling racing on the last day due to no wind. No one can remember ever having that many races at this regatta in only three days! The main event was won by David Starck from Buffalo, NY with brother Tom Starck and Jenna Probst crewing (bow #12). The Masters was won by Bill Faude from Chicago with Amy Simonsen and Ched Proctor crewing (bow # 7). JoAnn and Greg Fisher of Charleston, SC won the Colin Park Memorial trophy for highest place husband and wife (bow # 18).

The Lightning is truly an International Class with Fleets worldwide. They hold a World Championship every two years rotating through three continents. We had teams from four countries and eleven states at this year’s event. If all goes well we expect the 2022 event to see pre-Covid numbers with over 65 boats. It will be a Worlds year with the World event being held in Wrightsville Beach, NC.
